Ukraine visa support

The Australian Government remains committed to supporting Ukrainians and their family members who are temporarily in Australia as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The Department of Home Affairs is progressing visa applications from Ukrainian nationals as a priority, particularly for those with a connection to Australia.

Since 24 February 2022 the department has granted over 11,500 visas to Ukrainian nationals in Ukraine and thousands more to Ukrainian nationals elsewhere. Nearly 11,400 Ukraine national visa holders have since arrived in Australia.

The Australian Government made an offer of a temporary humanitarian stay for Ukrainians in Australia, which has since expired. For more information for those who accepted the offer, please see Information for Ukrainian nationals who accepted the offer of temporary humanitarian stay before 31 July 2022 .

The Australian Government acknowledges that there will be some Ukrainian nationals who were unable to accept the offer of a temporary humanitarian stay, which ended on 31 July 2022.

Ukrainians and their families who are in Australia and wish to extend their stay can also access standard visa pathways, including the skilled, family, student and visitor visa programs. If a ‘no further stay’ condition (8503, 8534, 8535 or 8540) applies to a Ukrainian’s current visa, they can apply to have that condition waived by completing a no Further Stay waiver request .

The department encourages Ukrainian nationals that want to come to Australia or extend their stay to explore their visa options .

Ukrainian nationals who have arrived on a temporary visa and are unable to access standard visa pathways or cannot return to Ukraine, may apply for a Bridging visa E (subclass 050) or a Protection visa (subclass 866).

For more information on Bridging visa E or a Protection visa see Other pathways for Ukrainian nationals in Australia .

If you are a Ukrainian national with a relative in Australia and you apply for a Visitor visa, you can make an application under the Tourist stream and provide details of your Australian relative. You do not need to make an application under the Sponsored Family Visitor stream.

786 Visa or Temporary Humanitarian Visa for Ukranians in Australia

March 25, 2022    Pace Migration    Migration , News

temporary humanitarian concern visa subclass 786 - Migration & Education Consultancy1

The Refugee Council of Australia welcomes the announcement by the Federal Government that Ukrainian citizens seeking refugee in Australia will be subject to humanitarian visas. All Ukrainian temporary visa holders in Australia and those arriving in the following months will be eligible for a temporary humanitarian (subclass 786) visa from the Australian government.

RCOA* chief executive officer Paul Bower stated, “Enabling Ukrainian people to arrive in Australia and be protected in the short term is an appropriate response by the Australian Government and sets a positive precedent for what could happen in other situations where people are seeking refuge in our country,”

“Ukrainians are being forced to flee their homes and country in circumstances where they continue to hold out the hope of safe return if peace can be restored,” Bower added.

Allowing Ukrainians to enter Australia and transfer to three-year Temporary Humanitarian Concern (subclass 786) visas provides hope and solutions in these circumstances. Temporary Ukrainians in Australia can currently work, study, and use Medicare while they await word on their future.

The government will work closely with the Ukrainian community in Australia to ensure that appropriate permanent visa alternatives are made available to this group at the right time.

The focus has been on making travel easier for people who need to flee Ukraine or neighbouring nations. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the Morrison government has prioritised visa applications from Ukrainian citizens. Especially those with ties to Australia, in temporary and permanent visa categories.

Over 5000 Ukrainians have been granted temporary visas since 23 February 2022, and about 750 have already arrived in the country.

The Commonwealth Coordinator-General for Migrant Services and officials from the Department of Home Affairs will continue to collaborate closely with the Ukrainian-Australian community. Also, the settlement service providers across the country assuring that those arriving from Ukraine are supported throughout their stay in Australia.

Australian human rights program providers will assist Ukrainian temporary humanitarian visa holders in finding long-term housing, gaining access to Medicare, enrolling children in school, and navigating other social services.

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and their state-based equivalents received a $450,000 grant earlier this year. This will help local communities continue to support people who have recently arrived in Australia.

Throughout the development of the situation in Ukraine and Australia’s response, the Morrison Government will engage with the Ukrainian community in Australia.

Information for people fleeing Ukraine

Changes for people from ukraine.

From 31 July 2022, people who have fled Ukraine and come to Australia are no longer able to apply for a Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa. Instead, those who missed out on the offer, or arrived in Australia after 31 July, will be able to apply for a one-year Bridging Visa E when their 90-day Visitor Visa runs out, or, if they fear persecution in Ukraine, an onshore Permanent Protection Visa (PPV). However, unlike the Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa, people on a bridging visa, including those awaiting an outcome on a PPV, will not have access to settlement services or income support.

This brief provides information for Ukrainians based on their current visa status. Ukraine visas brief Size : 98.5 kB Format : PDF

Those who accepted the offer of a Temporary Humanitarian Concern Visa prior to 31 July 2022

For individuals who have completed the form accepting the offer for temporary stay from the Australian Government (prior to 31 July 2022), the Department of Home Affairs will continue to process these visas. You do not need to do anything further until the Department contacts you.

The first step in receiving a Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa is to be granted a Subclass 449 visa. While the 449 visa will be granted for a six-month period, the Department intends to transition Ukrainian nationals to a subclass 786 visa as soon as possible, pending health checks, where required.

Ukrainian nationals on subclass 449 visas:

  • have full work rights and are eligible to receive Centrelink Special Benefit payments.
  • may be eligible for free English language tuition under the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
  • can receive full support under the Government funded Humanitarian Settlement Program.

Subclass 449 holders are not eligible to access Medicare.

Medical appointment

Once you have been granted a subclass 449 visa, the Department will advise you if you need to complete any health examinations as part of processing the subclass 786 visa, which are legally required under the Migration Regulations 1994.

People from Ukraine are required to pay for the costs of the health examinations themselves.

Following the grant of a subclass 786 visa

The subclass 786 visa will be granted for a three year period. During this time, holders of this visa have:

  • work rights
  • study rights (but not access to Commonwealth Support Places or the Higher Education Loan Program)
  • access to Medicare
  • access to Centrelink Special Benefits
  • access to the Humanitarian Settlement Program
  • childcare subsidies

Those who arrived after 31 July 2022 or missed the deadline

Ukrainian nationals who have arrived on a temporary visa and are unable to access any further visa options or cannot return to Ukraine, may apply for a Bridging Visa E (subclass 050) visa or a Protection (subclass 866) visa. Ukrainians and their families who wish to extend their stay in Australia can also continue to access other visa pathways, including the skilled, family, student and visitor visa programs.

People on a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) do not have access work, Medicare, Centrelink or settlement services.

Protection (subclass 866) visa

Ukrainians and their family members who fear harm if they were to return to Ukraine can apply for a Protection (subclass 866). The Protection visa is a permanent visa that, if granted, lets the holder stay in Australia indefinitely. The criteria for a Protection visa is narrow. Applications would need to demonstrate they fear persecution or other harm if returned to Ukraine. They would also need to show that there is no place in Ukraine which is safe for them to return to.

The current processing timelines for this visa is over two years at the Department, and over six years for an outcome of an appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

If a person is granted a Protection visa, they become a permanent resident and have access to government services on par with other Australian citizens.

Persons who apply for a Protection visa while they hold a substantive visa are eligible to be granted a Bridging (subclass 010) visa A (BVA) while their application is assessed. Protection visa applicants holding a BVA may apply for work rights in Australia, Medicare, publicly funded schooling for children, and access to free translating and interpreting services.

However, people waiting on a BVA do not have access to Centrelink or settlement services.

Bridging E (subclass 050) visa (BVE)

Ukrainians and their family members who are unable to access any visa options and become unlawful in Australia, and cannot return to Ukraine, can apply for a BVE. A BVE is a short term bridging visa that allows eligible individuals to stay in Australia lawfully while they seek to resolve their immigration status by obtaining a substantive visa or while they make arrangements to depart Australia. In order to apply for a BVE, a person must not hold any other visa (i.e. they must be an unlawful non-citizen) or already hold a BVE. There is no application fee. We understand that a BVE will be granted for 12 months.

People on a BVE have access to full work rights, Medicare, publicly funded schooling for children, and access to free translating and interpreting services.

However, they do not have access to Centrelink or settlement services.

This explains the process for Ukrainians seeking protection in Australia.

Temporary Humanitarian stay in Australia extended for Ukrainians

In late June, I was advised that the offer of a subclass 786 Temporary Humanitarian Concern (THC) visa was expiring on the 30 th of June.

Accordingly, I decided to extend the offer of a subclass 786 THC to the 14 th of July, to allow those still in the process of applying to access the program, as well as extending the offer to their immediate family members.

It also became apparent that the initial 30 th June expiry date, as set by the previous Government, had not been communicated to the Ukrainian Australian community.

Therefore, I am making this statement to advise the community that I am extending the deadline until the 31 st of July, for all Ukrainian nationals (and their immediate family members), to allow those who were not aware of a deadline, time to make arrangements to accept their offer.

Australia will also continue to provide support to Ukrainians, including via the $450,000 grant to the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations to assist their work to support those who have recently arrived.

For more information, visit the Department’s website: Australian Government offer for Temporary Humanitarian Stay in Australia .

Ukraine visa support - 14/7/2022

The Department is progressing visa applications from Ukrainian nationals as a priority, particularly for those with a connection to Australia.

The Government has extended the temporary humanitarian stay offer until 11:59pm on 31 July 2022, to Ukrainians who have arrived in Australia. This visa will be valid for three years and allow people to work, study and access Medicare. Support will also be provided by Australia’s experienced Humanitarian Settlement Program service providers. You can accept this offer by completing the  web form  online.

Persons who are unable to accept the offer by 11:59pm on 31 July 2022 can explore the range of alternative  visa options  that continue to be available to Ukrainians, including permanent visas.

Ukrainian nationals accessing WA hospitals     (10/05/2022)

I wanted to inform you that following Office of Multicultural Interests’ (OMI) engagement with the Department of Health regarding the accessibility for Ukrainian nationals to receive free treatment in WA public hospitals, OMI has been informed that the necessary action has been taken to enable this provision in all the hospitals. All the relevant public health services within WA Health have been notified that hospital treatment should be free for any Ukrainian nationals requiring medical attention and they are encouraged to attend a public hospital if required.

Additionally, if bills/charges are issued by any public hospital for treatment due to staff unawareness of this policy, WA Health has shared they will resolve this once notified and ensure no payments are required by the Ukrainian nationals.

We hope this helps bring some security and peace of mind for Ukrainian nationals seeking hospital treatment.  If the new arrivals need further support, please connect them with the Australian Red Cross as they are the Service Provider responsible to assist Ukrainians in Western Australia. The Red Cross contact details for queries and referrals is email - [email protected] , phone - 9225 8888.

If that is not possible in a particular location, an application can be submitted with available identity documentation and a Departmental officer will be in contact to discuss options.

The Government of Ukraine has advised that citizens of Ukraine without a valid international travel document can:

have an expired passport extended by up to 5 years or have minors (under 16) inscribed in a parent/guardian passport by an Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine or the Ukraine State Migration Service, or, where a passport is not available,

obtain a certified Certificate of Identity from an Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine in a neighbouring country.

As an urgent and temporary measure, Australia will recognise the validity of the above documentation for lodging visa applications and for travel to Australia, where the Department is satisfied that the criterion for the grant of the visa have been met and identity has been confirmed.

Australia recognises that the crisis in Ukraine means some children may be travelling across international borders with only one parent.

Australia is committed to ensuring the welfare of children and requires permission from both parents for a minor to travel to Australia.

If a visa applicant is unable to provide this consent, they should proceed to lodgement with available documentation and a Departmental officer will contact the visa applicant to discuss the application.

Enhanced support for Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s war on Ukraine (Sunday 20 March 2022)

The Australian Government will make available a temporary humanitarian (subclass 786) visa to all Ukrainian temporary visa holders currently in Australia and those who arrive in the coming months.

This visa will allow people to work and access Medicare and appropriate associated support services and will be valid for three years. School-aged children will also be able to continue their education.

The Government will work closely with the Ukrainian-Australian community to ensure appropriate permanent visa options are made available to this cohort at an appropriate time.

The focus to date has been on facilitating travel for those seeking to leave Ukraine or neighbouring countries urgently due to the crisis. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Morrison Government has been progressing visa applications from Ukrainian nationals as a priority, particularly those with Australian connections, across temporary and permanent visa categories. Around 5000 mostly temporary visas have been granted to Ukrainians since 23 February 2022 and around 750 Ukrainians in this cohort have now arrived.

The Commonwealth Coordinator-General for Migrant Services and Department of Home Affairs officials will continue working closely with the Ukrainian-Australian community and settlement service providers across the country to ensure those arriving from Ukraine are provided support throughout their stay in Australia.

This support, facilitated by Australia’s experienced Humanitarian Settlement program providers, will help Ukrainian temporary humanitarian visa holders to find long-term accommodation, gain access to Medicare, enrol children in school and other relevant social support services.

This builds on the grant of $450,000 provided to the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations and their state-based counterparts. This will support the community groups in their on-going work to support those most recently arrived in Australia.

The Morrison Government will continue to engage with the Ukrainian-Australian community as the situation in Ukraine, and Australia’s response, evolve.

How can I get the most out of my Travel Together Ticket?

Be flexible with your dates and destinations. Have a list of preferences and book as far in advance as possible.

Am I restricted to British Airways operated flights only?

No, you can now also use your voucher via ba.com on British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus flights, including certain of their respective subsidiaries and franchise partners, as detailed in Clause 3 ('Selected Airlines'), see full Terms and Conditions.

Can my trip start from outside the US?

Yes, your Reward booking can originate from anywhere, there is no restriction on routes. Please refer to Terms and Conditions regarding selected airlines, subject to availability.

When is the best time to redeem my Travel Together Ticket?

As soon as you can. Start to make a rough plan of your preferred destinations and dates of travel before your voucher is issued. Your ideal destination, dates and times may not always be available so being flexible reduces disappointment. Outbound travel must be taken before the expiry date of the voucher, which is 24 months from date of issue.

When is the best time to travel?

Although seats are available for redemption throughout the year, you may benefit from planning your trip during quieter times, such as midweek and during school terms.

When should I try to avoid?

Our busiest times are during the school holidays and at weekends, so avoiding these periods will give you more flexibility and choice.

Do I have to return during the lifetime of the Travel Together Ticket?

Although your outbound journey must be completed before the ticket expires, you are free to return any time afterwards. However, you must book your return flight at the same time as making your outbound reservation if choosing to redeem on a round trip.

Can I redeem a Travel Together Ticket when I pay with Avios & Money?

No, the Travel Together Ticket is only valid when you pay fully with Avios. However, you can purchase up to 35,000 Avios per annum, per account, if you don’t have enough Avios for your chosen reward flight.

Can I make a booking through my Travel Agent?

No, the booking must be made directly with British Airways.

Can I make my booking online?

Yes, you can redeem and manage your Travel Together Ticket online. Simply log in to to your Executive Club account using your membership number and pin.

I have a joint card with someone else, but the Travel Together Ticket has been issued in his or her name instead of mine, even though I do most of the spending on the card.

The voucher will be issued in the name of the main cardmember, regardless of who spends the most on the card.

Is it possible to allow someone else to use my voucher?

The person whose name is on the voucher must make the booking. The reward flight made using Avios must also be in the same name, although the additional ticket can be for your chosen companion.

Does my British Airways Executive Club account need to be registered in the US?

No, you can redeem your Chase Travel Together Ticket no matter where your Executive club account is registered.

Why Traveling Around Africa Is Difficult for Africans

I was scrolling on social media when a post caught my eye. Green Ranger Safaris , a travel company I'd never heard of, was organizing a road trip through seven African countries. This trip would start in Nairobi, Kenya, then head down into Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana. The pricing was reasonable, so I paid a deposit, brushing aside concerns about both spending weeks on end with a group of strangers and the slight chance that the trip might have been an excellently worded scam.

A few months later, in August, I was on a truck with those strangers. It was late in the evening, and we swept through the Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana, the sun in the sky a flaming orb, the only visible life on the sand of the desert being the shrubs, the wild horses, and the herds of elephants. Music swirled from the truck's speakers, a mishmash of popular Kenyan songs from the turn of the century and Nigerian megahits. The countries we were traveling to had been chosen mostly because they were all English-speaking and provided visa-free travel to Kenyans, so the border crossings were simple, with clearances for the trucks, stamps for our passports and, in Botswana, disinfectant for our shoes.

Talk among the passengers was already turning toward doing similar trips in other parts of Africa. One suggested starting in Namibia, sweeping down along the coast into South Africa, moving through the megacities there, then traveling to Lesotho and Eswatini before entering Mozambique. Another pitched a West Africa trip. It all sounded exciting. Everything was possible. But then another passenger brought up Niger, where a coup had just led to the country's closure of its borders. What would happen if a person took a West Africa road trip and then there was a coup? Would the passenger have to stay there and never go home? We laughed at the absurdity. But behind the laughter was real heartache. Because the reality is that any African traveler has thought about the difficulty of traveling as an African.

My mother was a traveler, and when she traveled for work, my brothers and I would travel in Kenya with her. Then, when I was older, the expanse of my travel grew larger: First I traveled around Kenya, then around East Africa. Now I have a desire to explore the continent, to explore versions of myself in other countries in Africa, home to some of the most humbling and impressive landscapes and vistas in the world: to the largest freestanding mountain on earth (Kilimanjaro); to the largest hot desert in the world (Sahara); to thundering waterfalls twice as wide and deep as Niagara (Victoria); to sparkling white-sand beaches; to UNESCO-listed nature reserves; to cities whose histories stretch back through millennia; and to award-winning wine regions. But I find myself marooned before the bank of difficulties other African travelers face.

A few months after my Green Ranger trip, I spoke to Anneli Douglas, an academic at the University of Pretoria in South Africa who has studied travel in Africa. She pointed out how much easier it is for Western visitors to get visas for Africa than it is for African travelers to visit their countries. "Sometimes, travelers have to travel long distances to apply for a visa, or there might not even be representation of the destination country in the home country, making it difficult to obtain a visa at all," she says. "Also, for Western countries, the cost to obtain a visa to Africa is much cheaper than what it is for Africans-considering the value of the local currency."

In places like Kenya, African destinations are rarely marketed to would-be travelers. Instead, there is a surfeit of packages offering holiday trips in destinations like Dubai, Bangkok, and Istanbul, because it is not only easier but also often cheaper to organize trips to these places than it is to organize trips within the continent. Even when visas are relatively easily attainable, travel from one African country to another is rife with difficulties. Sam Maundu, a Nairobi-based tour operator who runs Rosolo Safaris , which organizes trips around Africa, had no shortage of factors ready when I asked what these difficulties are: "Language barriers, visa restrictions, expensive flights, African destinations not targeting Africans to visit, long distances to be covered either by road or by flight since there are often no direct flights, security situations in some places, perception that there is nothing to see in other African countries, harassment by border officials."

One of the lingering effects of colonialism on the continent is that interaction between African countries tends to exist along mostly colonial lines: There are the former Portuguese colonies, the former British colonies, the former French colonies. Passport holders from Kenya, which was colonized by Britain, are mostly able to go to former British colonies visa-free or with visa-on-arrival status. This means that for a person planning a trip, it becomes easier to think of traveling to these countries. On our multiple-country road trip, the travelers were mostly holders of Kenyan and Ugandan passports (Uganda, another former British colony), and so the countries that the trucks went to were all-except for Namibia-former vestiges of the British Empire. This shared history meant also that because all these countries have English as an official language, it would be relatively easy for us travelers to communicate with people there.

Samuel Agblorti is a lecturer at the Centre for Mixed Migration and Diaspora Studies of the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. I ask him about about a hypothetical trip from Cameroon to Senegal, across a region where multiple coups have happened in recent years. Safety concerns rising from these events had further entrenched visa restrictions across Africa. "Because our borders aren't very well protected, there is a fear that allowing too many visitors will make it unsafe," Agblorti tells me. But even getting those visitors has been a problem.

In 2016, the African Union announced plans for an AU passport to be rolled out by 2020. This passport would open travel across the continent, as more African citizens wouldn't need visas to travel to other African countries. However, more than seven years later, the passport hasn't been launched, stymied by a mixture of security concerns and protectionist attitudes among African states. (The AU remains silent on when and if the passport will be launched.) Still, Agblorti says such a passport would not necessarily be the panacea that its supporters think it would be as it wouldn't automatically lead to visa-free travel without individual states implementing it. He gave the example of regional blocs such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), whose membership comprises 15 West African states whose citizens hold ECOWAS passports. "Even within ECOWAS, there are protocols that member countries are supposed to adhere to, but some of them don't," he says. "You may have a common passport, but if the countries don't make extra commitments, then it doesn't matter."

Thus far, only a handful of African countries have committed to allowing African visitors to visit without a visa: Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles; Rwanda has announced plans to implement this. On a small scale, then, African visitors to these countries will experience the promise of the AU passport-if it does indeed come to fruition.

Most recently, in December 2023, rather than introduce the visa-free status its president had promised , Kenya announced that it would require an electronic travel authorization (ETA) , to increase revenue from visitors seeking to enter Kenya. Visa-free entry was scrapped for all but five other East African countries, and new travel requirements and fees were introduced for countries whose citizens had previously enjoyed visa-free travel into Kenya. To some, the doors of entry-rather than being flung open-were being closed even tighter.

Another issue is how expensive it is to travel in Africa. According to a 2013 World Bank report , airfare within Africa is roughly 50 percent more expensive than airfare in comparable locations worldwide. Flights from one African country to the other tend to be much more expensive than flights from Africa to Europe and Asia, despite logic that the shorter the distance, the cheaper the flight ought to be. This means, in effect, that a traveler from Kampala, Uganda, would find it more affordable, and therefore more attractive, to fly to Dubai than to Maputo, Mozambique, despite the latter being much closer than the UAE.

Tour operator Maundu told me that this makes it difficult for him to suggest to his clients travel packages that involve other African destinations: Often, it means the cost of the round-trip air tickets more than doubles the cost of the entire travel package. And there aren't always reliable road or rail options that offer alternative transport to travelers. Most leisure travelers can't move directly by rail from Kenya to South Africa (there is a luxury train network between Tanzania and South Africa that costs $19,000), while in most other regions of the continent, not only are there no multicountry rail options, but also existing bus networks rely on terrible roads.

The irregularity or non-availability of intra-regional air connections and of internal air transport also constrains access to internal destinations and prevents progress with multicountry tourism packages, Maundu says. Also, tax rates per passenger in Africa are more expensive than they are on other continents: The total tax per passenger is about $64, compared to $30.23 in Europe and $29.65 in the Middle East. This is exacerbated by the lack of a single unified aviation market, whose absence means that fares and tax rates swing with volatility across different parts of the continent.

Rather than negotiate with one central body, airlines operating in Africa deal with individual countries, which each usually have different rates and requirements for entry. In Europe, for instance, the establishment of the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) in 2006 decreased airfares across Europe by making possible the rise of a fleet of low-cost airlines, and at the same time increased the volume of flights within European airports. In this vein, there have been attempts to establish a single aviation market in Africa. The most recent of these attempts is the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). Announced in 2018 , the SAATM so far has signed on 34 countries. However, like the AU passport before it, the SAATM has not been implemented, and so it remains nothing but an idea.

In the meantime, African travelers continue to dream. Travel plans continue to be made. Potential destinations continue to be talked about. At the end of our seven-country road trip, as we headed back to Kenya, we spoke again about organizing future trips together, our group of strangers now bonded as friends. Some people discussed taking a trip to Uganda over the next month. Others talked about heading across the Indian Ocean to Mauritius. In Lusaka, Zambia, where the first batch of travelers would leave us to fly back to Nairobi, weepy goodbyes were made. "We are family," one of them said.

Europe is one of the biggest sources of international arrivals in Africa.

How to maximize the British Airways Travel Together Ticket

Ben Smithson

Editor's Note

Airline credit cards typically offer standard benefits, like bonus miles on airfare purchases, free checked bags and priority boarding. But one of the most valuable perks any airline credit card can offer is a companion ticket that can cut your cost of travel in half.

Thanks to its high welcome bonuses, earning structure and airfare discounts , the British Airways Visa Signature® Card has long been considered one of the best credit cards from a foreign airline offered in the U.S., especially considering British Airways' expansive U.S. route network. But it also comes with one of the most interesting companion travel benefits: the Travel Together Ticket.

The rules around redeeming this perk have recently been improved, and it is now easier to use and more valuable than ever.

Here are the details on this companion deal and how to maximize it.

How to earn the British Airways Travel Together Ticket

U.S.-based British Airways Visa Signature® Card cardholders who spend $30,000 on their card in a calendar year can earn a Travel Together Ticket (posted within 4-6 weeks). The voucher is valid for outbound travel up to 24 months from the issue date (the return flight can be after that).

786 visa travel

The British Airways Visa Signature Card offers 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Exclusive offers when flying the carrier include a 10% discount on British Airways flights originating in the U.S., up to $600 in statement credits for award flight taxes and fees every year and 3 Avios per $1 spent with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Level. The annual fee is $95.

Only the main cardholder with a registered address in the U.S. is eligible to earn the Travel Together Ticket; additional cardholders are not. Only one voucher can be earned each calendar year, even if the cardholder spends more than $30,000 on the card.

Rules for redeeming The Travel Together Ticket

The Travel Together Ticket comes with several conditions worth considering when it comes time to redeem it , some of which are positive and some negative.

Previously, these vouchers could only be applied to award bookings using British Airways Avios and on British Airways-operated flights . However, this rule has recently been relaxed, so they can now be redeemed on flights operated by Aer Lingus and Iberia. Note that you must still book your flight(s) through British Airways Executive Club.

786 visa travel

The Travel Together Ticket differs from other companion tickets, which are more like a two-for-one paid deal. In this case, you'reyou'reng a two-for-one award redemption but are still responsible for the taxes and other carrier-imposed charges on your ticket (which can be substantial). This also means you have to find two awards open on the same itinerary in the same cabin. If you wish to travel in first class, two award seats on the same flight can be tough to come by.

For solo travel, you can redeem it for 50% of the Avios required for one passenger, which is a handy perk if you would rather travel alone and save Avios.

Previously, the voucher could only be used on round-trip itineraries originating in the United States. However, this rule has also recently been relaxed, so voucher holders can now commence their itinerary anywhere in the world that British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus operates from (provided there is Avios availability).

786 visa travel

Your companion must be booked in the same cabin on your itinerary (unless you redeem it for solo travel). So, if you book a business-class award for yourself, you must find a second one for your companion on the same itinerary. Stopovers are allowed.

Though the terms are not explicit, you should plan to have your card open and in good standing when you want to use your Travel Together Ticket.

When it makes sense to redeem the Travel Together Ticket

Now we come to the real question: Is it worth using the Travel Together Ticket? The answer depends on how you plan to redeem it.

British Airways awards are notorious for high taxes and surcharges on flights through London. While this generally makes economy awards a bad value, it can still be worth paying less than $2,000 per person to fly in business or first class as part of an award ticket compared to shelling out the cash fare, which will be many thousands of dollars, especially with premium fares across the Atlantic as high as they currently are.

786 visa travel

BA introduced an option called Reward Flight Saver to use more Avios to reduce the cost of the taxes and surcharges on Avios redemptions.

British Airways award availability between the U.S. and Europe tends to be much better than what the U.S. and other European carriers make available. So if you want to book an award, your chances of finding it are good.

The other key benefit is that British Airways has retained an award chart, so you can be confident of how many Avios you will need on any day — no 400,000 points per flight pricing with this program.

Related: Dynamic pricing vs. fuel surcharges — which is the lesser of two evils for your next redemption?

Now, let's look at four scenarios and compare the cost of using the Travel Together Ticket compared to purchasing airfare to determine whether this is a good deal.

To make things simpler, we'll search a single route from Atlanta (ATL) to London Heathrow (LHR) over a single set of dates in November since award availability was open across all four cabins offered by BA on these flights (these are off-peak dates). The taxes and fees are typical examples of what you would expect to pay, both for two people traveling together and solo travelers, given the ticket can also be redeemed for solo travel.

First up, economy. A round-trip award on this itinerary for two people using the lowest surcharge Reward Flight Saver option would cost 120,000 Avios plus 300 British pounds ($393) in taxes/fees.

786 visa travel

If you were using this as a Travel Together Ticket, you'd you'd be paying 60,000 Avios plus $393 for two tickets. This is because you would only be charged the Avios for one passenger but the fees, taxes and surcharges for both. Compare that to the regular economy fare on the same dates of around $1,000 per person for nonstop flights, and this would be a great way to use Avios to save hundreds of dollars.

If you are a solo traveler, you can redeem the Travel Together Ticket for 30,000 Avios plus $196 in fees, taxes and surcharges, saving over $800 on the cash fares for the same flight.

Related: A review of British Airways World Traveller economy on the Airbus A380 from London to Miami

Now for premium economy. Here' Here'smple award from the same week that would cost 190,000 Avios plus 660 British pounds ($864) for two passengers.

786 visa travel

A paid fare on the same dates would be $1,813 per person, so $3,626 for two passengers. With a Travel Together Ticket for two passengers, you would be charged 95,000 Avios plus $864, saving you thousands off the cash ticket.

Solo travelers could redeem 45,000 Avios plus pay $432 in taxes and surcharges, another excellent way to save big on the $1,813 cash fare.

Related: Is British Airways premium economy worth it on the Boeing 777-300ER?

In business class, British Airways will charge 360,000 Avios plus 900 British pounds ($1,179) in taxes and surcharges for two passengers at the Reward Flight Saver rate.

786 visa travel

With the 50% reduction in Avios with the Travel Together Ticker, you would still be charged a huge 180,000 Avios plus the full $1,179 co-payment. However, with cash fares on these dates close to $4,000 each round-trip in business class, you would still save thousands of dollars using the voucher.

For solo travelers, just 90,000 Avios plus under $600 in taxes and fees saves versus $4,000 for a cash ticket is a great deal.

Related: BritishAirways'' Cl" SuiteSuitesdon'ttppoint: On board a retrofitted 777 from London to New York

Reward Flight Savers are not offered in first class, so while you'll need marginally more Avios than the business class rates above, you must pay the full fees, taxes and surcharges. For two passengers using a Travel Together Ticket, this would be 170,000 Avios round-trip plus an eye-watering 3,263 British pounds ($4,279).

786 visa travel

While this would represent a decent saving on the cash fares of almost $6,000 per person, given the thousands of dollars of surcharges you must pay for a first-class redemption, using the voucher for business class instead would be a much better deal.

How to earn Avios

Suppose you want to use a Travel Together Ticket but don't have enough British Airways Avios in your Executive Club account. In that case, British Airways is a transfer partner of Capital One , Chase Ultimate Rewards , American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy , making Avios one of the easiest currencies to earn .

786 visa travel

Points transfer from Chase, Bilt and Amex at a 1:1 ratio (in addition to occasional transfer bonuses of up to 40%), while Marriott points transfer to Avios. Plus, you'll earn 5,000-Avios bonus for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred.

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to Avios:

  • American Express® Gold Card : Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. Plus, receive 20% back in statement credits on eligible restaurant purchases (up to $100) within the first six months of card membership. Terms apply.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Plus, check to see if you're targeted for an up to 125,000-point welcome offer through CardMatch (offer subject to change at any time). Terms apply.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening, plus a $250 Capital One Travel credit in the first cardholder year.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card : Earn 120,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Bottom line

The British Airways Signature Card Together Ticket can save you thousands of dollars on British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus flights from anywhere in the world by allowing two passengers to travel together in any cabin with award availability and only pay the Avios required for one passenger. The spending requirement to earn the perk is high, though. Reward Flight Saver allows passengers to reduce the notorious BA carrier-imposed surcharges by paying more Avios; this voucher is a valuable credit card perk for economy, premium economy and business class flights.
