I Want Strange New Worlds To Break Star Trek Canon & Save Captain Pike

Strange new worlds’ season 3 vulcan episode could be sybok’s perfect star trek comeback, star wars theory reveals jude law's mystery jedi is a classic legends villain who completes thrawn's canon story.

  • The Gorn Hegemony is a powerful and mysterious governing body of cold-blooded reptilians with advanced technology and superior physical capabilities. They communicate through light and are difficult to track.
  • In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, tensions between the Federation and the Gorn escalate when the Gorn attack a Federation colony. Captain Pike and his crew face off against Gorn forces, leaving them at a disadvantage.
  • While the Gorn were initially portrayed as aggressive and territorial in their first appearance in Star Trek: TOS, later appearances and Strange New Worlds indicate the possibility for peace between the Federation and the Gorn, suggesting a potential shift in their behavior.

The Gorn made their first appearance in the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Arena," but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has introduced a whole new version of the vicious reptilians. After Starfleet learns of the existence of the Gorn in Strange New Worlds , they begin developing weapons and technology to defend against them. As the tensions between the Federation and the Gorn increase, Starfleet begins to fear that war looms on the horizon. The Gorn have proven to be a formidable opponent for the Federation, but not much is known about their lifestyle and culture.

The Strange New Worlds season 2 finale, "Hegemony," adds fuel to the fire when the Gorn attack a Federation colony on the planet Parnassus Beta. The Gorn claim that Parnassus Beta is in their territory, and they send Starfleet a communication establishing a demarcation line. Despite Starfleet's orders to remain on their side of the line, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and a landing party slip past the Gorn to rescue the survivors trapped on the planet. "Hegemony" ends with the USS Enterprise facing off against a Gorn destroyer and three Gorn hunters, leaving Captain Pike outgunned and unsure about his next moves.

Everything Known About The Gorn Hegemony's History In Star Trek

Not much is known about the Gorn, but their governing body is referred to as the Gorn Hegemony, which was known to the Orion Syndicate as early as 2154. The technology of the Gorn seems to be similar to that of Starfleet and the Gorn themselves are stronger, faster, and more resilient than humans. Neither Gorn eggs nor hatchlings appear on sensors, making them nearly impossible to track. While the Gorn's method of communication is not yet fully understood, they seem to communicate with one another using light. Because the Gorn rarely leave survivors, their earliest encounters with the Federation have gone largely unrecorded.

The Gorn are cold-blooded lizard-like reptiles who originated in the Beta Quadrant. They reproduce by laying eggs within a humanoid host. To maintain a steady supply of hosts, the Gorn establish breeding planets where they deposit captured humanoids to hunt for sport and to be used as incubators. Even from a young age, Gorn can spray venom that infects a host with eggs. After a host becomes infected, Gorn hatchlings will soon burst from their body, killing them instantly. Vicious and territorial, Gorn hatchlings begin competing for dominance soon after they are born.

The Gorn's First Appearance In Star Trek: TOS

In the Prime timeline, the Federation does not officially encounter the Gorn until 2267 as depicted in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Arena." When Captain Kirk and his landing party arrive on the planet Cestus III, they discover that the Federation colony there has been completely destroyed and the Gorn lie in wait. As the Enterprise pursues the Gorn ship, they enter an uncharted area of space and encounter an advanced species called the Metrons. The Metrons deposit Captain Kirk and the Gorn Captain on a planet, saying that they will destroy the ship of whichever Captain loses the fight. Kirk eventually defeats the Gorn by creating gunpowder with materials found on the planet. Because Kirk stops short of killing the Gorn Captain, the Metrons return the Gorn to his ship and praise Kirk's mercy.

Interestingly, when Kirk confronts the Gorn Captain, the Gorn maintain that they only attacked Cestus III because it was in their territory. From the Gorn's perspective, it looked as though the Federation was invading. Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) both acknowledge that the Federation may have been the one in the wrong. Not only does this suggest these particular Gorn to be less vicious than the ones in Strange New Worlds , it also suggests that peace between the Federation and the Gorn may be possible.

The Gorn's Other Star Trek Appearances

After their first appearance in Star Trek: The Original Series , the Gorn show up on several different Star Trek series. A Gorn named Slar appears in one episode of Star Trek: Enterprise , "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II," but this entire episode occurs within the Mirror Universe. Slar kills several members of the ISS Enterprise crew, before eventually being killed by the Mirror Universe version of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) . A Gorn skeleton appears in the menagerie of Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) on Star Trek: Discovery, establishing, again, that some Starfleet officers knew of the Gorn before Captain Kirk's famous encounter.

The Gorn appear briefly in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1, episode 8, when Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) inadvertently ends up on a desert planet in the middle of a Gorn wedding ceremony. This scene is shown in a flashback as Rutherford recounts a particular day's events, so it's unclear how much of it is accurate. A couple of different Gorn can be seen on a Starbase in the background of the Lower Decks episode "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers," suggesting that relations between the Gorn and the Federation will not always be hostile.

The Gorn's Retcons In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Aside from a few brief appearances across other shows, the Gorn do not make a major return to the Star Trek franchise until Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Strange New Worlds has given more information about the Gorn's history and biology than any other Star Trek show. Despite the fact that the official first contact with the Gorn did not occur until the events of TOS' "Arena," Strange New Worlds establishes that the Federation knew of the Gorn long before that.

In Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 4, "Memento Mori," Enterprise Security Chief La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) reveals that she was the only survivor of a Gorn attack. When she was a child living on the colony ship the SS Puget Sound, Gorn invaded the ship, eventually killing everyone on board aside from La'an. After the Gorn had killed the other passengers, La'an was sent into space on a raft as part of a Gorn ritual. She was then rescued by the Federation starship USS Martin Luther King Jr.

In "Arena," it seemed as though none of the Enterprise crew members were familiar with the Gorn, but Spock (Ethan Peck) goes up against Gorn in both "All Those Who Wander" and "Hegemony." Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) also aid in the fight against Gorn. "Hegemony" introduces the young Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn), who not only builds a trap to catch Gorn, but also figures out how to sneak past their ships. All of these characters would be on the USS Enterprise in "Arena," but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can still offer an explanation for this apparent canon discrepancy.

The Gorn is 53 years old. Actually, he’s probably much older than that, but Star Trek fans first met the big, lumbering green guy in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Arena,” 53 years ago today.

The Gorn costume was created by Wah Chang while actor, stuntman and Star Trek convention favorite Bobby Clark actually got into the character to play the Gorn. “[Director] Joseph Pevney hired me as a stunt actor,” Clark told StarTrek.com in a 2011 interview. “Now, for ‘Arena,’ I was hired as an actor who could do my own stunts. That’s how I’d say it. Regardless of what the critics say about the fight with Bill Shatner, I think the Gorn was pretty interesting. I was supposed to be cumbersome, I was supposed to be awkward and I was supposed to be slow. That was the reptilian nature of the Gorn. But, definitely, I was hired as an actor who had the capability to do the stunts.” Clark, for the record, went on to appear in three other TOS episodes: “The Apple,” “Mirror Mirror” and “The Return of the Archons.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds recently released its fourth episode, "Memento Mori," and with it, used its prequel status to return to an iconic piece of Star Trek lore dating back to 1967. This episode doesn't shy away from saying the infamous species' name, either. However, revisiting the Gorn isn't all that surprising, considering Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh ( Christina Chong ) revealed the heartbreaking backstory that found her a victim of the ruthless species, even if that wasn't quite the lore the audience was expecting based on the character's name. But fifty-five years is a long time, so if you don't remember everything about the antagonistic species, nobody would blame you. So, who are the Gorn?

The Gorn are an intelligent, bipedal, and reptilian species that are incredibly hostile and unfortunately warp-capable with technology on par with The Federation's. Thanks to Lower Decks , the assumption can be made that they have at least two genders and that marriage is a part of their reptilian culture. The species are very durable, strong, and have incredible stamina, however, this also makes them slower and less agile creatures. While the eye appearance of the reptiles' eyes varied among the species, they had razor-sharp teeth, holes on the side of their heads for ears, and claws on their hands and feet. The Gorn are carnivores.

RELATED: How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Perfectly Balances Classic and New Trek

Until Strange New Worlds , it was assumed that the first contact with the Gorn was with Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), but we now know of at least two previous interactions. The first occurred in the 2200s when the reptilians captured a human colony ship and transferred the entire complement to a facility where they were used as live food or breeding sacks. According to the Gorn's culture, the last surviving person is jettisoned into space aboard a life raft, allowing for Lt. Noonien-Singh's survival and rescue by Una Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ). Later, the Gorn attempt to lure The USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) into a trap, but thanks to the previous experience of Lt. Noonien-Singh, the Enterprise is able to evade capture, destroy one of the ships, and escape.

The Federation made contact with the species when they attack a colony/outpost on Cestus III, a system in what the Gorn considered their territory, in Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Arena." When USS Enterprise pursues a Gorn vessel, another alien, a Metron, transports both Kirk and the Gorn Captain to a deserted planet where the iconic fight scene takes place. Kirk eventually wins, but instead spares the Gorn. The Metron is surprised but impressed, deciding to spare The Enterprise while still sending them thousands of light-years away from that sector of space.

A Gorn was next seen on The Animated Series episode, "The Time Trap." He was seen on a ruling council of a pocket reality, implying that some of the species became separated from the whole. It's important to note that generally The Animated Series isn't included in the recognized Star Trek canon. The Gorn are also in several Lower Decks episodes. In addition to the huge marriage revelation, the series also gives fans an amazing tidbit of information: A Gorn resides on Starbase 25 and is a chef at 'Mr. Krada Leg'.

Finally, a Gorn named Slar is also used in Enterprise 's "In A Mirror Darkly, Part 2" to help contextualize the mirror universe and show how brutal and violent the alternate reality is. Slar is a slavemaster for the Tholian Assembly, leading a salvage mission of the USS Defiant (NCC-1764), a ship from the prime universe, stuck in the mirroring one. When Terrans also board the ship, Slar attempts to keep control of the ship but is killed by Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula ) in the process. Star Trek: Discovery also shows that because of the size and might of the species, it isn't unusual for members of The Terran Empire to take their skeletal remains as trophies, as seen on Georgiou's ( Michelle Yeoh ) ISS Shenzou.

The Gorn may not have a history as complex as the Andorians or Bajorans, but the Gorn rightfully earned their place in Trek lore even just by being the first thing that comes to many people's minds when mentioning Star Trek or Captain Kirk. The inclusion of this species in La'an's backstory gives the opportunity to flesh out this species even more in Strange New Worlds , potentially providing more context for the goofy fight that aired over 5 decades ago.

Clint Eastwood’s 1982 Science Fiction Thriller Was Influenced by Star Wars

Figuring out what godzilla actually is: gender, origin, species explained, the umbrella academy introduced its best guest stars in its worst & last season.

Gene Roddenberry's space opera franchise Star Trek is filled with iconic aliens: Klingons, Andorians, Romulans, Betazoids, Orions, Changelings, Vulcans, and the Borg, to name a few. Many of them have been explored in great detail through various Star Trek series and films. Still, one particularly infamous and hostile species remains relatively unknown in live-action media: The Gorn . First introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series , these reptilian humanoid aliens are best remembered from the 1967 episode "The Arena." It is one of the most notable episodes in Star Trek history, mainly due to the slow and sluggish movement of the creatures' leader and its over-the-top combat with Captain Kirk, which rendered the scene unintentionally comedic.

Update August 13, 2023: This article has been updated by Mona Bassil with additional information following the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and with information from the series Star Trek: Lower Decks.

This cemented the Gorn as one of the most memorable aliens in the Trek universe. Despite that, the franchise has typically avoided bringing them back. While it makes sense for prequel series not to include them, it is odd how later Star Trek shows, like The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , and Prodigy, never featured the Gorn. One of the more recent series, however, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which premiered on Paramount+ on May 5, 2022, has not only given an update on the Gorn but has also explored them in more detail and plans on making them an overarching threat for the series. Here is everything to know about the Gorn species.

Gorn History in the Star Trek Series

The Gorn are first introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Arena". They are still a mysterious species to the Federation, and Captain Kirk is forced to do battle with the Gorn leader in a fight to the death. Kirk believes the Gorn to be a violent and savage race that eradicated an entire Starfleet colony. While he has the chance to kill their captain, he spares him after he realizes that the previous attack on a Starfleet Outpost was simply an act of self-defense and that the Gorn and humans have more in common than they realize. This marks the official first encounter the United Federation of Planets has with this species.

The Gorn would later appear in an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series , as well as on Star Trek: Enterprise , which marked the first time the creature was portrayed with GCI. In order not to mess with the continuity of the original series and the subsequent first contact with Kirk, the Gorn seen on the prequel show, Star Trek: Enterprise , is set in the Mirror Universe, an alternate universe in Star Trek where everyone is either evil or has an entirely different character.

How Strange New Worlds Redefines the Gorn

The Gorn were planned to appear in both Star Trek: Nemesis and 2009's Star Trek reboot but were scrapped for unknown reasons. In Star Trek Into Darkness , Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy makes reference to performing a C-section on a pregnant Gorn, indicating they may have encountered The Federation earlier on in this new timeline.

The next major appearance of the Gorn would be in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, where they are a recurring foe. Set ten years before the events of TOS , Strange New Worlds slightly retcons the original series. Here, the alien species are a large part of the backstory for La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), who is the sole survivor of a Gorn attack when she was a child. This marks an unofficial first encounter with the species in the series.

The USS Enterprise , under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, first encounters a Gorn ship in the episode Memento Mori . The creatures are not seen, which seems to indicate that the aliens would be a recurring unseen foe throughout the series. But they reappear later in the season, in the episode "All Those Who Wander " , where various members of the Enterprise crew, including Spock, come face to face with the aliens. Unlike in the original series, these Gorn are depicted as smaller, more agile, and more animalistic. Henry Myers, the show's executive producer, told Variety , "I think audiences would have an instinctive organ transplant rejection to the classic version of the Gorn. Audiences now are sophisticated; they expect a certain level of effects work, of verisimilitude.” He was, of course, referring to the fact that the Gorn on TOS looked like giant lizards in fake rubber suits.

Related: Star Trek: How the 3 Animated Series Stack Against Each Other

The Season 2's action-packed finale, "Hegemony", it features the species decimating a human colony at the edge of Federation space, which they believe is part of their territory. They also plant a device that prevents any starship or shuttlecraft from beaming up trapped survivors, thus demonstrating superior dampening technology. While the episode begins with Captain Pike very clearly seeing the Gorn as monsters, the episode also looks to try to build the foundation for the Gorn being seen as a more advanced species in The Original Series.

Not only do the Gorn have their own fleet of ships, the young Gorn also appear not to be killing each other for dominance like it was believed they do, but instead working together. Pike comments on how there is more for them to learn about the Gorn. Audiences will likely learn more in season 3 as the finale of season 2 ended on a cliffhanger. Pike must decide between following Starfleet orders and retreating or going to save the rest of his crew who were beamed aboard the Gorn ship, including La'an Noonien-Singh.

The Gorn on Star Trek: Lower Decks

More recently, the species also appeared on the adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks , a refreshingly comedic take on the Star Trek franchise that pays homage to its complicated history while cleverly poking fun at its most memorable chapters and characters. In season 1's eighth episode, "Veritas", Ensign Rutherford's cybernetic implant is in need of an update. To complete the process, the device occasionally has to shut down and reboot, causing Rutherford to suddenly collapse and wake up hours later. Consequently, he crashes on a barren planet and finds himself surrounded by the Gorn, who starts biting into him. It is a double crash because he has also interrupted a wedding celebration.

Design and Characteristics

The Gorn in the original series are a bipedal and large reptilian alien species. They are capable of space travel and seem to have their own civilization. They also appear to be an apprehensive species, as even later in the timeline of Star Trek, it is unclear if they ever joined Starfleet.

The Gorn on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are similar to the variant of the species introduced in the Kelvin timeline set Star Trek video game between the 2009 Star Trek film and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness . They are smaller, quadrupedal aliens that have a lot in common with the Xenomorphs from the Alien film franchise , including the practice of laying parasitic eggs inside a host that burst out of the victim's chest. They also no longer seem to have the sparkly eyes shown on TOS . Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds later found an explanation for this change in size. The smaller ones are the baby versions of the species, and audiences got to see Spock and Nurse Chapel fight a proper size Gorn which matched the size of the one Captain Kirk fought.

The Gorn have evolved and acquired the ability to evade Starfleet and other electromagnetic medical sensors, possibly indicating why the species has gone so long in the franchise without being seen. They grow quickly and will not hesitate to eliminate each other in order to establish dominance and strength. Strange New World also establishes that the Gorn are susceptible to the cold. It has done more to explain the Gorn than any other piece of Star Trek media since the creature first appeared, and hopefully, additional seasons will explore its culture and variants. The season 2 finale clearly hints that Trekkies will be seeing more of the Gorn as recurring villains in season 3.

Biology [ ]

Adult Gorn are tail-less reptilian bipeds, although they are born as tailed quadrupeds. Their ears are simple holes in the side of their skulls, which may lead to a tympanic membrane such as that seen in lizards and frogs on Earth. Their mouths boast an impressive array of sharp teeth as well, indicating a carnivorous lifestyle, while the hands and feet both possess vicious claws.

It has been quipped that the Gorn are comparable to the Earth's extinct Velociraptor species, based on the Gorn's size and bite radius, although this is likely a misunderstanding, as velociraptors were only the size of turkeys; the likely intended comparison was another dromaeosaurid such as Deinonychus .

The eyes of the Gorn are of interest to some, as they come in two very different styles; most appear silvery and faceted much like the compound eyes of insects, while others have typical humanoid eyes complete with pupils. This may indicate that one or the other may be caused by technology. Both male and female Gorn with insectoid eyes have been observed, proving that the difference isn't caused by sexual dimorphism. It is extremely unlikely that they are subspecies of one another due to the massive difference here.

It is imperative to note that Gorns with humanoid eyes have only been observed in the Mirror Universe, and since Humans from the Mirror Universe have a genetic difference that makes their eyes more sensitive to light, it's possible that Mirror Gorns might have different types of eyes as well. Another possibility is that the insectoid eyes might actually be a nictitating membrane protecting their inner eyes from the bright desert sun.

Life cycle [ ]

The Gorn have an endoparasitoidic life cycle, the duration of which depends on the species of the host they were incubated in, varying from a few hours to days (in the case of Human hosts) or weeks (in the case of Orion hosts). They emerge from the host as small, viciously aggressive creatures that are already intelligent and strong enough to kill adult Humans. These newborn Gorn will direct their energy towards hunting prey (presumably to gather food for their own maturation) and fighting one another until only the strongest and most cunning individual remains. Even at this immature stage, the young Gorn are capable of (presumably asexual) reproduction, spitting corrosive fluids that burn into the skin of a host and release microscopic eggs inside them. They also have an inherent biological ability to remain undetectable by both 23rd century scanning devices and the telepathic senses of species such as the Aenar .

Culture and society [ ]

The Gorn are regarded as an extraordinarily dangerous species. La'an Noonien-Singh, who survived more than one encounter with them, has expressed the belief that the Gorn can't be reasoned with or fought, and claimed that even several Starfleet officers would be no match against a single adult member of the race; although it should be noted that this statement was made years before James T. Kirk's famous victory against the Gorn captain. Their aggressive, competitive nature is also reflected in their cultural attitudes, as they have no tolerance for failure and no qualms about killing their own kind.

Star trek (2013 game) [ ].

The Gorn are a cruel and militaristic imperialistic race that rules another galaxy and attempts to invade and conquer the Milky Way Galaxy. In their home galaxy they enslaved or exterminated every race, and strip mined every world. Being masters of genetic engineering they possessed bio-mechanical weapons that combined technological and organic elements.

Star Trek Online [ ]

The Gorn Hegemony was conquered by the Klingons in the early 25th century. They formed a significant part of the military forces of the Klingon empire and some of their warship classes were adopted by the Klingon Defense Forces.

Star Trek: Typhon Pact [ ]

The Gorn Hegemony together with five other interstellar powers ( Tholians , Romulans , Breen , Tzenkethi and Kinshaya ) formed the Typhon Pact in the late 24th century after the Borg invasion of 2381. It was an alliance that stood in opposition against the Khitomer Accords, an interstellar alliance consisting of the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons, later joined by the Ferengi and the Cardassians .

  • In Star Trek Into Darkness , Bones mentions performing caesarian section on a Gorn pregnant with octuplets, implying that the species can also give birth like humans. This also proves that first contact with the Gorn Hegemony happened much earlier in the J. J. Abrams' universe than in the prime timeline.
  • In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the Gorn are portrayed as endoparasitoids who capture members of other species (including humans) to use them as food on planetary nurseries.

STFC: Gorn Location

STFC Commanders can only find the new Gorn enemies in specific systems, however, their exact spawn location is unknown.

There are numerous hostiles that you can encounter in Star Trek Fleet Command (STFC), and Scopely regularly introduces new enemies to the game.

Update 65 revealed that players level 40 and higher can now test their fleet’s strength against the Gorn hostiles.

Table of Contents

STFC: Gorn Location

Similar to other enemies, the Gorn only spawn in specific systems . Each of these systems have unique warp range requirements and if your warp range is too low, you will not be able to travel to them.

Some of the systems in which you can find the Gorn Hunters are as follows:

Additional locations

According to the patch notes, there are additional systems in which you can find Gorn hostiles. Unfortunately, the announcement did not specify whether these enemies are Hunters or another type of Gorn hostiles.

You can find Gorn hostiles in these systems:

STFC: Gorn Hunters Location

Crew combinations

Once you have picked a system that you want to travel to, you need to select a crew to destroy the Gorn. Bear in mind that these enemies are immune to regular weapons, however, they are vulnerable to Isolytic Damage.

Commanders therefore have to select a crew that is able to deal Isolytic Damage . We recommend that you use Kathryn Janeway, Enterprise-E Data and Enterprise-E Picard.

All of these officers’ officer abilities will increase the amount of Isolytic Damage you deal, which makes them the ideal crew for vanquishing Gorn enemies.

If you defeat the Gorn hostiles, you will earn a variety of rewards, however, the reward that most Commanders are after is Volatile Isomatter. Players can exchange their Volatile Isomatter in the Isolytic Refinery for impressive rewards.

You can acquire Officer Shards, Artifact Pieces and Grade Upgrade Materials. Keep in mind, however, that every item in the change store requires a specific amount of Volatile Isomatter.

Some STFC players will therefore save their Volatile Isomatter for a more expensive item, while others will exchange their materials for a more common item.

Homeworld [ edit ]

The Gorn are a reptilian species from the Alpha Quadrant .The Gorn govern their Stellar Empire from the planet Gornar , a temperate, warm Class M planet with a local gravity of 1.4 G.

Species [ edit ]

Physical description [ edit ].

Eye Colour: Yellow and Green, have a nictitating membrane protecting the eyes from full sunlight.

Hair Colour: No hair

Height: 7' average

Weight: 320 pounds average

Blood Colour: Unknown

Skin Colour: Green

Description: They have small tails that are in the process of de-evolving, and stand upright on two legs, though are slightly hunched over when they walk. Gorn are a cold-blooded, reptilian species with green, leathery skin and an average height of approximately two meters. They tend to be stronger than most humanoids.

Their ears are simple holes on the sides of their skulls. Their mouths boast an impressive array of sharp carnivorous teeth, and their hands and feet have vicious claws. They have a size and bite radius similar to the now-extinct velociraptors of ancient Earth. Humans may tend to underestimate Gorn because of an opinion that reptiles are somehow less evolved than mammals. This would be unwise; the Gorn are at least as intelligent as humans.

Like most cold-blooded lifeforms, the Gorn are known to prefer warm temperatures.

Temperment: [ edit ]

The Gorn are a reptilian race from planets with greater gravity than Terra and with a harsher climate, which perhaps accounts for their greater endurance. Though battle is not the overwhelming preoccupation that it is for Klingons and Romulans, the Gorn prize physical strength and endurance over intellect. Gorn individuals and Gorn society as a whole are not given to subtlety, and thus they do not attempt to be charismatic, preferring to persuade by physical domination. They consider psionics a fidgety and unworthy dicipline, and do not persue such studies. Even Gorn engineering is of the 'push hard till it moves' variety.

Biology [ edit ]

The Gorn are a cold-blooded reptilian race native to the Ghdar system. In reality, the Gorn are actually three separate sub-species with many genetic similarities and each hailing from one of the three habitable planets in the inner zone of the Ghdar system. It should be noted, though, that the three species each have distinctive traits due to evolutionary differences from the differing climates of their home worlds.

Ghdar I [ edit ]

Being a class N planet, Ghdar I is covered with 98% water in the form of low lying marshes, bogs, and swamps. The Gorn native to this world tend to be taller and leaner than their other cousins, with smooth dark green scales. Unlike their kin, these Gorn still possess a fully developed tail that is usable as both a natural weapon and a means to propel them through the shallow bogs much in the same way an alligator swims. Most of the Gorn of this species are less inclined to all out conflict and generally assume the roles of Scientists, Engineers, and Medical.

Ghdar II [ edit ]

Ghdar II is a class M temperate planet much like Earth, with definitive hot and cold seasons, but with a much higher gravity. They have bright green scales, no tails, and a strong powerful build. The Gorn from this world are the most often encountered, as their outgoing attitude and wander lust makes them the perfect choice to fill the ranks of naval personnel. Equally as intelligent as their Ghdar I brethren, these Gorn value tactics and strategy, which makes them best suited for command roles within the navy.

Ghdar III [ edit ]

The class M desert world of Ghdar III is home to the least intelligent of the Gorn species, typically filling the role of Marines and general laborers. They are the shortest of the Gorn species, being only slightly taller than the average human. Their scales are a deep ruddy brown or tan, covered in spines and armor that both protects them and regulates the intense heat of their environment. They are also the strongest of the Gorn physically, but commands given to them must be kept simple and direct as their low intelligence can lead to mishaps. Nevertheless, their loyalty to their commanders is absolute.

Females tend to be slightly smaller than males, with less bulk and a more streamlined physique. During the "Brood Fever" (see below) the females are also far more aggressive and dangerous than their male counterparts.

Since the differing Gorn species are all 95% genetically identical, cross-breeding is possible, but the traits of the mother tend to overrule the traits of the father in the hybrid offspring.

Being reptilian, Gorn are an egg-laying species. A female Gorn is able to lay between one and five eggs after each mating. While tending her eggs, the female suffers what is known as "Brood Fever" that lasts until the eggs hatch. During this time, the female's maternal and protective instincts overrule conscious thought and she is prone to attack anyone that approaches her nest with the exception of her mate or a blood relative. The male Gorn in a mated pair, or a family member, is the only one able to care for the female during these times. As such, it is not uncommon for both parents to be granted a leave of absence from their given occupations when the female is expecting to nest until such a time as the children hatch and the fever subsides.

All three species of Gorn are resilient to damage. They are not indestructible by any means, but a phaser on low stun would hardly be felt. To actually stun a Gorn with Federation issue phasers would require multiple shots on high Stun, as the first shot would only serve to make the Gorn mad. A phaser set to kill has no guarantee of actually being fatal. Only a phaser at its highest setting is guaranteed to kill a Gorn with one hit, as he would be vaporized. Non-critical damage to a Gorn regenerates quickly. A severed arm or leg would regrow within a months time. Broken bones heal naturally within a week. Internal injuries heal quickly depending upon the severity. Burns, on the other hand, are far more serious for a Gorn. Burnt flesh takes far longer to heal than it does for other races and infection is almost guaranteed to set in, which could cause even minor burns to be fatal if not promptly treated.

On average, adult Gorn shed their skin every six months. Both shortly before and after shedding, the Gorn's skin is very sensitive and itchy, leading to them being very irritable. As such, Gorn generally prefer to go through shedding alone.

Typical Gorn lifespan is 275 standard years.

Mentally, Gorn are a highly pragmatic species. Though sometimes viewed as being dull witted due to their reptilian physiology, they are anything but. Gorn are decisive, calculating, and curious. They are slow to make friends, due to their long lifespans, but gaining the loyalty of a Gorn means that the Gorn in question would follow and guard his or her friend until death unless given suitable reason to do otherwise.

Technology [ edit ]

star trek gorn wiki

Gorn technology is at a similar level to the Federation. Their ships are about as fast as Starfleet vessels thanks to shared technology. Gorn ships use disruptors. Gorn infantry units possess powerful disruptors, capable of completely disintegrating targets at ranges of around a kilometer. Sensor technology is slightly less effective than that of the Federation. They have recently begun developing their own cloaking devices. Until this point they had only the cloaking devices that they took off captured or destroyed Romulan ships.

They have had Warp Drive for as long as humans, but have been using particle weapons for only about half that time. They still use melee weapons and have a fondness for explosives and projectiles.

Gorn technology is on par with that of the Federation, though the Gorn are less worried about how Technology is achieved. Many Gorn advances are the result of capture of early Federation, Klingon, or Romulan vessels. In the case of the Federation, though, the vessels and crew are almost always returned unharmed. Most believe Gorn engineering to use a 'push hard till it moves' style. While this is more or less accurate, the Gorn have made this method into an artform. It's not unusual for a Gorn vessel to be equipped with multiple warp cores (2 is the most common), but the extra power created is always used in reasonable manners to prevent the ships from tearing themselves apart.

Gorn vessels are equipped with phasers similar to Federation vessels, but instead of Photon Torpedos, Gorn ships come equipped with Plasma Torpedos.

Plasma Torpedos [ edit ]

The Plasma torpedo begins life as a large slug of duranium alloy, though it can be dopped with intentional impurities to achieve a desired effect. The slug is fitted with a high power shield generator and homing warhead to direct the weapon at its desired target. When loaded, the slug is super-heated until the point that it explodes into pure energy. The plasma is contained with the warhead containment shield, holding it in a sort of ball shape. Activating a plasma torpedo is costly and energy intensive, making them a low-use weapon, but the results are well worth the trouble, as a Type-R Plasma torpedo can do devastating damage to an enemy vessel. Plasma Torpedos have a short range, and lose power as they travel. At close range, they seek out and home in on their targets.

Enveloping Plasma Torpedo [ edit ]

A Plasma Torpedo that has been properly doped and the energy level altered can be set to envelope the enemy vessel and cause damage to all shields simultaneously. Due to the nature of shield harmonics, though, the plasma energy travels along the enemy shields and gathers at the weakest one, causing the most damage there. Should a shield be down, the energy will leak through and cause internal damage to the vessel.

Experimental Type-20 Plasma Torpedo [ edit ]

Designed as one of the most destructive Plasma Torpedos in the Gorn navy, the Type-20 has all the abilities of other plasma torpedos, but highly amplified. In addition, they can cause sensor blindness and high levels of Delta radiation on their intended targets. Originally the project had been scrapped due to the Delta radiation causing illness in workers handling the weapons, the weakness has thus been fixed. Intended for use on Starbases and battlestations, the Type-20 has found use in Starships due to the miniaturization of Gorn technology and improvements in ship's systems. The Type-20 is currently in extremely limited testing.

Plasma Beam [ edit ]

In extreme circumstances, a Plasma Torpedo can be further charged and used as a direct fire weapon. The warhead is absorbed into the plasma stream, then the plasma is concentrated down into a tight beam. The beam is shot from the launcher at the opposing ship, concentrating immense amounts of damage at a very small point, allowing the beam to puncture shields and affect the target directly. This has a downside, though, as the launcher is destroyed in the process of supercharging the Torpedo and emitting the beam.

Cloaking Device [ edit ]

A limited amount of Gorn vessels are equipped with a cloaking device. The majority of these were salvaged from Klingon or Romulan vessels, but recently, the Gorn have begun to develop their own cloaking technology based upon the Romulan standards. While primitive at this stage, the Gorn cloak is showing great promise.

Society [ edit ]

Family [ edit ].

Gorn families are generally nuclear, with a mother, father, and children. But that family is a part of a larger extended family, the Clan. The Clan then belongs to an ever greater community, the Crest which is not only a collective of families but a political force behaving like a political party. There are ten active Crests on Gornniska, the most powerful being the Dragon Crest followed by the Phoenix Crest and then Red Crest.

Government [ edit ]

Gorn Hegemony The government of the worlds controlled by the reptiloid race known as the Gorn is called the Alliance. The Gorn Alliance is governed by two Autarchs, one who represents the Gorn homeworld and the other who represents the Gorn colony worlds.

No state of war exists between the Federation and the Hegemony, thanks to negotiations begun after initial contact. Peace negotiations progressed on Clanhaven, a UFP world close to the Federation/Gorn Border. The Frontier Accord limits the build up of military shipping in the disputed space.

Negotiations usually progress slowly because the Gorn are split between those who would negotiate peacefully with the UFP and the 'actionist' faction who believe in direct confrontation. Both factions agree on the premise that the Federation must not hinder Gorn expansion and fufillment of their Manifest Destiny, but they differ on the methods to be used.

Linguistics [ edit ]

The Gorn language, Gornouf, is a combination of guttural sounds and hissing, and some words have no vowels in them at all. A good example is the Gorn Republic's creed, "FOKHSS IP'KAKAROO OIIAASS'YU." This means "Fight the weak."

History [ edit ]

The Gorn (whose homeworld is in the Alpha Quadrant ) have a long history of war, art, culture, and pride. They have had many global governments on their planet of Gornar, from the original Empire of Gornniska, to the Gorn Confederacy, to the Gorn Empire (separate entity from the Empire of Gornniska), to the Gorn Republic.

The Gorn Hegemony is a powerful empire located coreward of the Romulan Star Empire, also bordering the United Federation of Planets and the Interstellar Concordium. It is comprised of three genetically related races, each from a neighbouring star system, knows as Ghdar I, Ghdar II and Ghdar III, are on the coreward border of the Romulan Star Empire and are a more civilized and cultured race than most people believe.

The alliance between the Gorn and the Federation - following a brief conflict over a misunderstanding regarding the Federation colony on Cestus III, a Gorn world - represents one of the few alliances that is based on mutual trust and desire for friendship as opposed to political convienence.

They are mutually antagonistic with the Romulans.

Medical [ edit ]

They can heal injury at a rate of two pounds (1 kg) of flesh per hour, and knit bones in less than 15 minutes.

Recent Events [ edit ]

The Gorn Hegemony has fallen on hard times recently due to an invasion by the Romulan Star Empire engaged at the Gorn Orbital Fleetyards above the Class-N planet Sobek. 120 Romulan vessels crossed the Neutral Zone into Gorn space under cloak and launched a surprise attack on the Fleetyards, utterly destroying them. The rest of the fleet responded to this attack and drove the Romulans from Gorn space, but not before one Warbird launched a Tricobalt warhead into Sobek's atmosphere. The reaction cracked the Oxygen and Hydrogen in the air, igniting both, and rendering the world a lifeless husk in a matter of minutes. 2 million Gorn died at Sobek, but this was not the worst of it. The Battle of Sobek was a ruse. While the Gorn fleet was occupied defending the fleet yards, the Romulans staged equally massive surprise assaults on key Gorn installations, destroying several worlds and crippling the Hegemony. 250 million Gorn died in the three days of the invasion before the Romulans were finally routed, but the damage was done. Most of the Gorn fleet was destroyed and the Hegemony's infrastructure was in ruin. Unable to move resources or rebuild, the Gathering was effectively rendered impotent. Many suspect that this wasn't truly an invasion by the Romulans. Rather it was an attempt to render a fatal blow to the Gorn and then wait for them to die. If the latter is indeed the case, it has been a resounding success as soon after famine and death spread throughout the Hegemony.

Due to the destroyed infrastructure of the Gorn, piracy has been able to be conducted unabated. There have been many more incursions by other powers, such as the Cardassians, attempting to gain a foothold in Gorn territory and exploit the resource rich planets. All invasions have been turned away, but with each one, there is a loss of life and vessels that the Gorn can simply no longer afford.

Current Status [ edit ]

Slowly, the Gorn are rebuilding their infrastructure and getting their shipyards back into place, but the progress is slow due to constant pirate activity and incursions from less than friendly powers intent on gaining a foothold. Famine is still rampant, as are diseases that are untreatable due to lack of medical transportation. The Gorn know that invasion is inevitable, but they do not know when and it has left the Hegemony on edge.

At the suggestion of the Klingon Chancellor during the transfer of vessels from the Empire to the Hegemony, Ambassador Zogozin has been attempting to open negotiations with Admiral LoDona of the 52nd fleet. The Klingons praise LaDona as an honorable warrior and competent leader, the sort that the Gorn could potentially ally with in the event that invasion plans move forward. To that end, Dr. Serixs Ssarumon, having left the Gorn Navy after the battle of Sobek, was reactivated from the reserves and enrolled into Starfleet Academy to a Science Major and ensured assignment with the 52nd. It is the Gorn's hope that having one of their own serving on board a Federation vessel would help convince the Admiral to hear them.

Threat from the Federation is not the only worry the Gorn have at this time. The loss of shipping routes and the inability for the government to properly maintain order has led to many factions within the Gorn Hegemony to splinter. The actionists, lead by the very same Gorn that planned the attack on Cestus III, has once again begun overtures for open warfare and combat with the Federation, Romulans, and Klingons. The monarchy, believing cooler heads will prevail, know that in the Hegemony's current state, it would not survive such an action. However, the negotiations between the factions are starting to crumble and civil war is becoming more and more likely. The Gathering and those Gorn loyal to the restoration of the Gorn Hegemony are unsure how long they can keep the actionists from open combat with the other major powers.

Aid from an Ally? [ edit ]

Due to the wrecked state of the Gorn, the Hegemony was forced to turn to the Federation for aid in repairing and rebuilding its decimated fleet and restoring the infrastructure that was needed to provide aid to its people. Zogozin, Gorn ambassador to the Federation sought the help of Admiral Doenitz, now the leader of the Federation. Doenitz agreed to take the matter under advisement and then asked the Ambassador to leave. All further efforts to seek aid from the Federation were stone-walled by various elements and Zogozin could do nothing more than return to the Hegemony and await the inevitable call to surrender. After some time, Admiral Doenitz agreed to provide the Hegemony with a Galaxy Class vessel for the purposes of study. When the Gorn arrived at the Rendezvous point, however, all they were supplied with was a Saucer module with the weapons stripped and the computer core mostly blanked. This level of deception hurt relations between the two powers even further and bolstered the Actionists' influence among the people. Ambassador Zogozin, having been made a fool by the Federation, quietly resigned as Ambassador.

It was during this time that a member of the Federation Admiralty, an old friend of Zogozin's, secretly relayed highly disturbing information to the Gorn. Federation Marines were conducting exercises to train against Gorn Shock troops. Likewise, many scenarios were created to train for planetary incursion and occupation. Effectively, the Federation was in the early planning stages to invade the Hegemony and take it by force, though apparently in a highly quiet manner.

Project Phoenix [ edit ]

In response to this the Gorn enacted Project Phoenix. The Klingons gave the Gorn a hundred old D7 Starships, which the Gorn frantically worked to refit to current technological specifications. In exchange, the Klingons would retrieve all data on Project Phoenix for feasibility studies in the Klingon Empire. the vessels showed promise, able to mount the more destructive Plasma Torpedo systems, Gorn engines, and shields. However the Gorn knew that in a full out invasion, these ships would not be enough.

it was during this time that Chief Petty Officer Serixs Ssarumon, the former foreman of the Sobek Fleet Yards, volunteered his private vessel to Project Phoenix as well. His was an old Constitution-II Class vessel that was salvaged and purchased under Interstellar Law, the USS Lexington (NCC-1709). The Lexington showed the most promise under Project Phoenix, the saucer section retrofitted with "Assignment Modules" that allow its role to be changed quickly. In addition, she was fitted with the latest in Plasma Torpedo technology and Binary Warp cores, allowing one core to function even if the other is destroyed. The entirety of Project Phoenix took 18 months converting four-hundred vessels, some Klingon D7s, others older Gorn vessels, into current combat readiness with Gorn crews working around the clock despite material shortages. Many retired Gorn, some well past 230 years, volunteered to be reactivated and get back to work.

With many vessels in the Civilian fleet pressed into combat service and the fleet augmented with older vessels refit to current standards, the Gorn faced only one more problem. Manpower. With so many lives lost, all vessels were severely undermanned. This led to the advent of a highly classified project known only as Avatar.

Project Avatar [ edit ]

For many years, the Gorn had been experimenting with and developing Positronic modules on par with that of the Soong-type androids. However there was one problem. The positronic brains were immense. Far larger than what could be used in a humanoid body. Before, the brains were powered by optitronic data circuits, but after capturing a Romulan Warbird experimenting with bio-neural circuitry, the project reached a new level.

Though size was not reduced by any noticeable margins, the processing power proved to be ten-fold greater than that of the previous optritronic circuitry. The artificial intelligence showed emotional response, creativity, and the ability to recognize and develop loyalties to individuals. In addition, they were able to devise unorthodox military tactics and continually learn and adapt to stimulus.

After the loss of all the Gorn lives, it was determined to bring Project Avatar into being. A single vessel was chosen, the refit USS Lexington. Her entire Duotronic interface system was gutted and replaced with bio-neural circuitry, then a highly advanced Gorn computer core was installed. Finally, the fetal Artificial Intelligence was implanted and brought to life. Many Gorn in the government protested to this project, noting the M-5 computer incident the Federation dealt with when trying this very same thing over a century before, an engagement that Lexington herself was involved in and was nearly destroyed. Nevertheless, the King saw merit in Project Avatar and ordered it to proceed. All ships systems were tied into the computer core, granting the AI command and control should her crew be incapacitated. Since it was determined that a rogue AI in control of a starship could be deadly, many ethical subroutines were created and integrated into the AI, giving her a sense of patriotism and loyalty to her crew and the Hegemony.

Upon activation, Lexington's artificial intelligence, which immediately assumed the identity of the vessel, began to question where it was and who it was. The Gorn, seeing no reason to lie to the new AI, granted her access to all information concerning the state of the Hegemony and Project Avatar. Many were stunned, even those that had been against the project, when Lexington began to mourn for those lost and show the same desperation as her organic counterparts to defend the Hegemony from the potential invasion. No one expected this level of self awareness from an AI system. Her ability to feel sorrow and guilt quieted the naysayers.

Dr. Serixs Ssarumon, now a civilian working in the Gorn Navy and prior to his enrollment at Starfleet Academy, remained close to this project. He and Lexington developed a true friendship and she helped him cope with the loss of his family at Sobek. He helped her develop the traits she would need to survive in the Hegemony, including emotional control and careful analysis of information before action.

Lexington's personality developed quickly under Ssarumon's guidance. She showed a skill at both diplomacy and combat. With practice, she was becoming skilled at use of her weapons and with showing creative thinking.

The King and government were pleased because with the AI in place, Lexington could be efficiently run with a crew of less than 100 instead of the original 430 needed to operate a Constitution Class vessel. The additional crew space could be devoted to extra labs, countermeasures, troop barracks, or weapon placements.

Overall it was determined that Project Avatar was a success with only minor quirks. Lexington, for reasons unknown, developed an almost over-protective nature to her crew and became highly aggressive when the crew was threatened. These are not traits the Gorn Hegemony would see as a problem and the project was given final green light.

Problems [ edit ]

The next vessel fitted for Project Avatar was an old Klingon D-7, the IKS Gr'oth. Like Lexington, Gr'oth showed all the positive personality traits and quirks common to the Project Avatar vessels, however a tragic event threw the vessel's AI into a severe downward spiral.

While on patrol near the Federation border, Gr'oth and her crew encountered overwhelming pirate activity. Using a weapon banned by interstellar law, a Thalaron Generator, the priates attacked the Gr'oth. The crew were all killed in one fell swoop as they were dosed with Thalaron radiation. Much to her merit, the Gr'oth drove off the pirates on her own, but her warp system was severely damaged, leaving her at sublight speed only. When she finally managed to limp back to the nearest Gorn base, she was suffering from severe emotional distress. Wracked with guilt because she could not defend her crew against the weapon, she fell into severe depression. During repair operations, she transported the maintenance crew to the starbase and left under her own power and without authorization. She jumped to warp before she could be pursued and made haste to a G-type star on an apparent suicide run. All attempts to talk her out of this course of action failed and she refused to respond to command codes. The only message she sent back to the Gorn ships pursuing her was a simple, but sorrowful "Forgive me". The Gorn could only watch in horror as she slammed herself into the corona of the star and was destroyed.

This event led to a recall of the Lexington and new command overrides put into place to prevent this action from occurring again. The new system allows the crew to override the AI and remove control ability from it in the event of instabilities.

The Gorn have begun to outfit a limited number of other vessels with Project Avatar AI systems, but at this time, they feel Lexington needs further testing to ensure all the problems are worked out. This is testing they can ill afford, as both the time and manpower are simply not available.

Gorn

a typical Gorn

In Game Description

A cold-blooded, reptilian species, Gorn are many times stronger than Humans , but are slower and less agile. Their stamina is greater than that of humans. They have sharp teeth and claws on their hands and feet. Their silvery, faceted eyes resemble insects. Gorn have equivalent intelligence and technology to most Federation races. They are territorial and stubborn, and have racial memories that go back hundreds of years. The Gorn have organized their culture in a caste structure led by a monarch. The Gorn once ruled great stretches of space in the Alpha Quadrant , and it is their ultimate goal to conquer every world that was once under their domain. In the late 24th century, the Gorn Hegemony became embroiled in a long war with the Klingons. In 2404 the Gorn homeworld fell to a Klingon fleet, and the Gorn were absorbed into the Klingon Empire .

History and specifics [ ]

Gorn10

Gorn captain.

The Gorn Hegemony was a monarchy headed by the Gorn Imperator . ( ST - Destiny novel : Mere Mortals )

History [ ]

In 2267 , the Gorn Hegemony made first contact with the United Federation of Planets , destroying the Federation colony at Cestus III , a world they considered to be their territory before being pursued by the USS Enterprise . After intervention from the non-corporeal lifeforms known as the Metrons , the Gorn Hegemony reached an agreement about the territorial dispute, and Cestus III was ceded to the Federation. ( TOS episode : " Arena ")

In the 2280s , the Gorn Hegemony was ruled by a king who was old and lacked authority. Actual running of the government was left to the King's advisors and children. Though the government suffered political problems, it was still quite a powerful military force that was more then enough to challenge other governments near their territory. ( TOS video game : Klingon Academy )

In 2374 , the Gorn Hegemony suffered a coup d'etat by the Black Crest faction as the USS Enterprise -E visited their world in an attempt to enlist the Hegemony's aid in the Dominion War . The new Gorn government attacked and occupied Cestus III, now a Federation Member State , before being thwarted. The Hegemony later joined the Allied cause. ( TNG comic : " The Gorn Crisis "; ST novel : Articles of the Federation )

By 2379 , the Gorn Hegemony had established normal diplomatic relations with the Federation, and even maintained a diplomatic mission on Earth . The Gorn Ambassador to the United Federation of Planets that year was Zogozin , whom Federation President Min Zife of Bolarus found very intimidating. ( TNG novel : A Time to Heal )

In 2381 , the Gorn Imperator noted that Ambassador Zogozin may attempt to eat Federation President Nanietta Bacco in retaliation for her "compulsory summit" to shore up support for the Federation 's war with the Borg Collective . He eventually conceded and joined the allied cause. ( ST - Destiny novel : Mere Mortals )

Government and politics [ ]

The leadership of the Gorn state consisted of the Imperator of the Gorn Hegemony . However, in the early 23rd century , (around the time of the TOS episode Arena) it was governed by two Autarchs, one from the capital world of S'sagron and the other from the former colonies of the Gorn Empire which had fragmented from civil war years prior. Below these duel executives was a council that was suppose to be the voice of the Gorn people but in practice, due to the philosophy of Gressigssgir the faction with the strongest voice and most diplomatic victories tended to hold total sway of the council. This system of government lead to a political fracturing between the 'actionist' faction seeking to continue militant action towards the Federation and a more moderate faction seeking continued peace. ( FASA RPG module : Demand of Honor ) This dispute and other democratic woes evidently lead to greater centralization as by the late 23rd century the state was ruled by a King , an old head of state who delegated his authority to several vassals who became at odds with one another for supremacy of the Hegemony. The king himself was sheltered from these political problems by those loyal to him. This led to degradation within the Gorn government. It was believed that, without a strong leader, the Hegemony might eventually collapse and fall into civil war. ( TOS video game : Klingon Academy )

In the 24th century , the Gorn Alliance consisted of many peace loving clans that maintained cordial relations with the Federation. However, equally, they were opposed by rival militant patriarchies that viewed a continued alliance with the Federation Grand Alliance as being both demeaning as well as restrictive. This led to rival factions battling one another for power over the Gorn government across years and even led to renegade Gorn attacking Federation targets in order to provoke a war between the two. However, many of the rogue Gorn were destroyed though continued Federation presence within Gorn space had provoked an irritated reaction from what few rebels remained. Culture [ ]

The Gorn species were noted to be aggressive and almost primitive by Klingon tacticians though they were quite intelligent which meant that it was a mistake to underestimate them at any point. The Gorn attack approach involved the use of brute force with overwhelming attacks against their enemies rather than making use of finesse involved in carefully planned strikes. As such, a Gorn was more likely to slug their way out of a situation then think of a solution through it. ( TOS video game : Klingon Academy ) Another racial trait was a devotion to the Gorn Imperative where they believed that only the strong survived and that their race should not tolerate any form of weakness. Extreme forms of this belief led to the Gorn ruthlessly butchering their own kind who demonstrated any kind of weakness to their foes. ( TNG comic : " The Gorn Crisis ")

Gorn in combat.

Despite the political problems of the Gorn Hegemony, it was known that in the 2280's that the Gorn state possessed a strong, disciplined military that prevented overt attempts against Gorn colonies.

Gorn Space Command was the primary defense organization that managed the Hegemony. Even though the Gorn possessed fewer ships compared to their neighbors, the Space Command maintained a fleet that was highly feared by its enemies. Gorn officers were highly trained with a great deal of combat experience. This combination made the Gorn a fearsome foe to face in battle. An elite military unit included the King's Fleet Guard that was a part of the Gorn armed forces. ( ST video game : Starfleet Command )

Territory [ ]

The Gorn Hegemony was located between the portion of Federation space extending from the center of the galaxy along the Alpha and Beta Quadrant border and the Klingon Empire. ( ST reference : Star Charts ) This positioned the Hegemony squarely between the galactic arms which contained a sparse region of space with only a few habitable worlds that the Gorn had colonized. Gorn (Star Trek)

The Gorn (real name not revealed) is the captain of a starship from the alien empire known as the Gorn Hegemony and appeared as Captain Kirk's opponent in the Star Trek episode "Arena", where he served as the main antagonist.

Overview [ ]

A reptilian alien of great physical strength, but also intelligent no less than a human; the Gorn cannot be considered much of a villain, actually; since he and Kirk were forced into the duel to the death by a godlike alien figure. Nevertheless, thanks to his iconic appearance and the fact that some of the fight sequences in this episode have been deemed some of the worst coordinated in all television history by some fans; the Gorn has become one of the most popular and fondly remembered Star Trek aliens.

Conflict initiated between the United Federation of Planets and the Gorn Hegemony after the Gorn's successfully taking control over a Federation outpost, which the Gorn declared to be within their territory. During space combat between the Gorn's ship and the USS Enterprise a sophisticated and powerful alien race named the Metrons appeared unexpectedly and took both ships into custody by disabling their power. The Metrons claimed such warlike behavior to be primitive and chaotic and forced the captains of the respective ships to resolve their differences personally, in a hand-to-hand combat on a nearby desert planet. The winner would be allowed o leave, while the loser would have his ship destroyed. Kirk and the Gorn were transported to the planet by the Metrons and engaged in battle, employing a variety of techniques. While the Gorn is stronger, he is also slower due to his reptile metabolism; but his intelligence is not below human. Eventually, Kirk manages to build a primitive cannon using the materials available and hits the Gorn, becoming in advantage; but refuses to kill him. The Metrons acknowledge this as a noble attitude and decide to return both captains to their respective ships unharmed.

After this, the Gorn species would have only cameo appearances in the animated series and in an Enterprise episode set in the mirror universe. They would play a major role in the non-canon graphic novel The Gorn Crisis set during the Next Generation era.
