Culture Club lead singer Boy George dishes on his fans, his songs, and how he rates his younger self

KICKING off the latest Culture Club tour, singer Boy George dishes on his fans, his songs, and how he rates his 19-year-old self.

Miss Me? Culture Club’s Boy George loved being on stage in front of an adoring Adelaide crowd on Tuesday. Picture: Simon Cross

‘It gets worse’: Blake under fire for viral video

Internet loses it over star’s new boyfriend

BOY George is pleased to welcome the husbands to the Culture Club family.

More than three decades after the gender-bending pop pioneers swept the world with their music and fashion, the front rows of their concerts are remarkably mixed.

The hysterical teen females, self-anointed misfits and androgynous individuals of the ’80s may have mortgages, jobs and families now but they are happily reliving their poptastic youth with these Culture Club reunion gigs.

“Who are you calling a fully functional adult?” Boy George joked in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.

“I don’t think I fall into that category and I definitely saw a few people who were waving the flag for individuality in Adelaide last night.”

“The thing is with Culture Club, we always attracted everyone; there were outsiders and mums and kids and now even a few husbands who were the boyfriends dragged along years ago.”

“Now they look happy to be there instead of the geezer who would never admit to being a Culture Club fan.”

Feeling good ... And sounding better, Boy George says his voice is bigger than during Culture Club’s heyday. Picture: Simon Cross

Looking rather resplendent in a noughts and crosses ensemble, the 54-year-old frontman was clearly delighted with the warm welcome the English band received for the opening show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday ahead of their national tour.

He wasn’t quite sure how many “I Love Yous” were shouted during the show and revealed most crowd interaction sounds less than affectionate because of the inner-ear monitors most performers wear now.

“It can sound like they are heckling,” he said. “When I can’t understand people I always say isn’t wonderful that my uncle is here.”

The reunion circuit may satisfy nostalgia cravings to hear the hits of the ’80s — and Culture Club had more than their fair share — yet the current tour shows Boy George is not only in fine voice but clearly loving being on stage.

“I did a show in New York a couple of weeks ago and a reviewer said my voice is weaker which is complete rubbish, I think I have a much bigger and richer voice now,” he said.

“I don’t feel intimidated about being on stage, it is a natural environment for me; playing live is where all the fun is.”

Who’s he? Boy George barely recognises his 19-year-old self and his “insane” interviews with Molly Meldrum and others. Picture: Supplied

While he may frequent nightclubs when wearing his DJ hat, the former party boy will be spending his non-performing hours in Australia sleeping.

“The main thing when you are touring that you can do to look after your voice is sleep. I never really go clubbing now unless I am DJing and then I am working. Hanging around in clubs is not my thing,” he said.

The setlist for the Australian tour features hit after hit, from opener Church of The Poison Mind , It’s A Miracle , I’ll Tumble 4 Ya , Time (Clock of The Heart) , Miss Me Blind and of course, Karma Chameleon .

Boy George nominates the Culture Club classics Victims and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? as two of the band’s biggest songs to stand the test of time.

Victims @RealCultureClub @BoyGeorge #adelaide pic.twitter.com/s4NEBZt6GU — cameron adams (@cameron_adams) June 6, 2016

“I think there are songs you grow into and songs you grow out of. Songs like Victims and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? still resonate and are in some ways, more emotional,” he said.

“When you are 19, you are writing about love and you have no idea. Fast forward to 54 and you have a very different perspective and that enables you to perform these songs with more depth and experience.”

As for that 19-year-old boy and his fashion statements that swept the globe, the man that is Boy George now barely recognises him. Or his outlandish outfits.

“You can only be who you are now,” he said.

“I wouldn’t know how to be that person, as great as he was and in some ways, I bear no resemblance to him. I watch interviews he did and think ‘What are you talking about?’ Oh my God, I was so insane.

“But I do look at some of the photos and think ‘You look quite good there’.”

Boy George said he didn’t get a chance to check out the set from their support band, the reconstituted Australian ’80s outfit Kids In The Kitchen — but was keen to meet them.

“Weirdly enough, they kept to themselves. I don’t know if they thought we were unfriendly; we’re very friendly. Come and say hello; we don’t bite,” he said.

Culture Club play HBF Stadium, Perth on Wednesday, Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne on Friday, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney on Saturday and Sunday and Riverstage, Brisbane next Tuesday.

Under-fire actress Blake Lively has been mocked online for a comment she made in yet another resurfaced interview that has gone viral.

Lana Del Rey’s fanbase are in a tizzy after the star was spotted holding hands with an unlikely new man, a US alligator tour guide with two children.

She’s one of the most famous performers on the planet – but you’d be forgiven for not even realising it was her in this new photo.

About Culture Club

Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early ’80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group’s charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain.

By the time Culture Club’s second album Colour by Numbers was released in the fall of 1983, the band was the most popular pop/rock group in America and England. “Karma Chameleon” became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the album reached number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S. Throughout 1984, the group racked up hits, with “It’s a Miracle” and “Miss Me Blind” reaching the Top Ten. In the fall, the group returned with its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire. While “The War Song” reached number two in the U.K., the album was a disappointment in America, stalling at platinum; its predecessor went quadruple platinum.

Following a brief tour in February, Culture Club went on hiatus for 1985, with Craig, Moss, and Hay pursuing extracurricular musical projects in the interim. Though their comeback single, “Move Away,” became a hit in April, its accompanying album From Luxury to Heartache stayed on the charts for only a few months.

George confirmed the group’s disbandment in the spring of 1987, and he began a solo career later that year. While his solo career produced several dance hits in Europe, he didn’t land an American hit until 1992, when his cover of Dave Berry’s “The Crying Game” was featured in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. In 1995, George published his autobiography, Take It Like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, issuing the two-disc set VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Hits.

A new album, Don’t Mind If I Do, appeared in 1999, reaching 64 on the U.K. charts; it did not receive an American release. Culture Club next celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a 2002 concert at Royal Albert Hall.

Culture Club reunited in 2014 for a tour and the band also began work on a new album with producer Youth. The group scheduled the release of an album called Tribes in 2015, but the record never materialized. Instead, the recordings provided the foundation for Life, the 2018 album that marked Culture Club’s first new album in nearly 20 years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Last summer’s headlining tour with his full band/electronic set-up, featuring special guest alternative music legend Midge received rave reviews.  LA Weekly declared Jones, “…poignant and perfect” and “absolutely superb”.

Electronic music pioneer Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in a number of different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up.  He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with “New Song”. His first two albums HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits.  HUMAN’S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?”  In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well.”

Howard Jones has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world.  Jones has performed on NBC’s top-rated morning and nighttime shows respectively, Today and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.  His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high-profile television series and films such as “Stranger Things,” “Breaking Bad,” “Watchmen,” “The Carrie Diaries”, “Superstore” and “Bumblebee”.

BERLIN will forever be recognized as the American progenitor of electro-pop artistry with sensually appealing lyrics.  Few bands emerging from the era of BERLIN have achieved as far-reaching and long-lasting an impact and, rarely, such a timeless array of musical grooves.  The Los Angeles-based band made its first national impression with the provocative single “Sex (I’m A…)” from the platinum-selling debut EP Pleasure Victim in 1982. “The Metro” and “No More Words” were also chart toppers, but it was the unforgettable, intimate, and strikingly beautiful love song, “Take My Breath Away” that took the band to another level.  The ballad’s defining role in the Tom Cruise film, Top Gun , helped solidify BERLIN’s everlasting place in American pop-culture.  The song was a #1 international hit and received both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for “Best Original Song” in 1986.

BERLIN’s discography has yielded twelve gold and platinum album awards. The band—founded by Nunn, bassist John Crawford, and keyboard player David Diamond—made its everlasting place in American pop-culture. Nunn’s ongoing influence earned her the #11 spot on VH1.com’s “100 Greatest Women in Rock,” while, as an actress, she played leading roles in films including Katie: Portrait of a Centerfold with Kim Basinger, and Thank God It’s Friday with Jeff Goldblum and Debra Winger. Along with comedienne, Wendy Liebman, Nunn also previously hosted the critically acclaimed radio show Unbound with Terri Nunn on 88.5 FM KCSN Los Angeles.

Boy George is a British singer and songwriter of international fame. Originally from Kent, England, Boy George earned global fame in the late 70s and 80s and has been known as a musical icon since.

Born on 14 June, 1961, Boy George was originally born George Alan O'Dowd. He comes from a relatively poor background, and lived in various squats around London whilst young, trying to make a name for himself. Boy George is famous for his androgynous appearance, amongst other things. His extremely unique and now iconic style earned him attention when he was young and was what launched his career. He was discovered by the music executive Malcolm McLaren, and originally asked to perform with the already established music group Bow Wow Wow.

Over his career, Boy George has worked with a number of bands: during the 80s he was the lead singer of the band Culture Club, who won Grammys and Brit Awards for their music. He also founded and performed with the group Jesus Loves You during the period 1989–1992. He is well known for his soulful voice and sings a range of different genres, from new wave and disco to soul, pop and soft rock. However, his music style is most commonly referred to as blue-eyed soul, a genre of music influenced by reggae and rhythm and blues.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Boy George went solo and his music contained more glam influences, such as the likes of David Bowie and Iggy Pop. He will always be remembered however, for being a key member of the 1970s and 80s New Romantic music movement, that occurred in England.

Live reviews

Boy George is an artist in the truest extent. He has no qualms about expressing himself and has gained severe attention both negative and positive for doing so. Some people may brush him off as a gimmick others may recognize his genius, but you have to hand it to him that he can put on a hell of a show.

Boy George has reached astronomical success with his classic “Karma Chameleon” but the entirety of his credibility is not tied to this hit. His creative strength and his pop sensibility is reflected throughout his career. Boy George is anything but a chameleon. The color of his sound may be constantly changing, but he refuses to blend into the background. His fashion senses are daring, flamboyant and more often than not pay off. His stage presence is almost reason alone to see his performance. His shows combine wondrous visuals and irresistible music into an experience that can not be ignored.

Boy George plays upbeat dance tracks such as “I’ll Tumble 4 You” and “Time (Clock of the Heart), but also shows that he can do serious material as well. Such songs as “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” is a perfect example of his openly sensitive and melancholic side. He has even displayed different sides of himself through collaborations. A few years back he recorded the heartbreaking song “You Are My Sister” with the brilliant classical pop singer songwriter “Antony”. Boy George’s career has proven to be a significant influence on the work of underground and complex musicians like the as mentioned Antony and Rufus Wainwright, but has spoke to thousands of pop stars as well.

Boy George tours with a knock out band that captures the essence of his sound and all the nuances of style form his spanning career. He tours with at least three back up singers, a horn section, a multi instrumentalist, the basic guitar, bass, drum setup, and even a lap steel player. He has it all covered. His new material is on par with the brilliance of his early career. At his show you will hear country ballads, reggae jams and his signature blue eyed soul. Boy George is truly an entertainer at heart and an artist by nature. Whether he is spinning records at a night club or pouring his soul out on stage the audience walks away nothing less than satisfied.

I saw Boy George with Culture Club it had to be 1981 or 1982 and I think it was at Bushnell Hall in Hartford, Connecticut. He was wearing a loosely fitting white outfit (i think) and had long braids or dreadlocks? Anyway his voice was so soulful and heartfelt that amazing is a little word to describe the show. He and his band gave it all and we ate it all up. One of the best voices and performers of our time. I was also fortunate years later to be introducd to him by a mutual friend and was allowed to photograph him. I am a photographer who has shot other bands but, that was a hige thrill for me that I have exhibited the picture a few times in various shows. He's First Class all the way.

I attended one of his concerts in Brisbane Qld Australia in 2017,where i meet him and had my photograph with him and culture club. There is no one else like Boy George as far as i'm concerned as a person, or entertainer, I have loved his voice from his first hit and many of his songs. His cloths are remarkable and he was the man who gave us big girls the layered look and style. I am 10yrs older than him but it doesn't stop me loving the man! i would love to meet him again.

Was a subservient show ... from the opening support stars to the Closing moments of Karma Chameleon.... touching moments and more talking that generally goes on in these shows giving an insight into how the songs came about and what they mean to the band ... would recommend wholeheartedly x
