Khuvsgul Lake, located in the northern part of Mongolia, is an incredible natural wonder and a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.

Not only is Khuvsgul Lake the largest lake in Mongolia, it’s the largest freshwater lake in Central Asia. The lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush forests and rolling hills that provide stunning views of its pristine beauty.

With temperatures ranging from warm summers to cold winters where the lake completely freezes over, Khuvsgul Lake offers visitors a unique experience no matter what time of year they visit.

From fishing on its tranquil waters to exploring nearby villages or trekking through its mountainous terrain, Khuvsgul Lake has something for everyone and is one of the best places to visit in Mongolia . Especially if you only have seven days to experience what Mongolia is all about.

How to get from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake

To get from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake, there are multiple ways to make the journey: by car, bus, or plane.

The trip to Khuvsgul Lake from Ulaanbaatar will take two days minimum, with one overnight in Moron.

Those who make this trip by car should be warned, the journey to Moron can take more than 10 hours due to road conditions, weather, and just plain old Mongolian time. That being said, the road passes through an array of stunning landscapes and captivating landmarks making the journey a memorable part of the trip.

From Moron, the drive to Khuvsgul Lake, no matter which mode of transport you choose – car, bus, or plane – will take several more hours depending on your final destination.

One advantage, and case for making this drive, is the opportunity you have to meet nomadic people living in nearby villages or explore the towns, cafes, restaurants, and local markets along the way.

Mongolia is a vibrant destination worth visiting not just for its natural wonders, but also for its rich cultural heritage which has been passed down through centuries of nomadic life in this part of Mongolia.

The one-hour flight from Ulaanbaatar to Moron Airport provides travelers with incredible views from above of the grasslands and meadows filled with wildflowers leading up to Moron’s mountainous terrain.

While flights are available, and are the fastest, but also most expensive option for getting from Ulaanbaatar to northern Mongolia, we don’t recommend traveling to Moron this way. In 2022, domestic flight options were limited and unreliable. This is something that changes yearly as Mongolia’s domestic airlines work through local issues but is something to be aware of.

Taking the bus from Ulaanbaatar to Moron is the cheapest option, but also the longest. The bus from Ulaanbaatar to Moron operates throughout the year. From Moron you will need to hire a private transport or hitch a ride.

Whichever mode of transport you decide on for getting from Ulaanbaatar to Khuvsgul Lake, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views as you travel through this spectacular part of Mongolia.

When to Visit Khuvsgul Lake

From five-star hotels to tourist ger camps or camping, there are plenty of options when it comes to booking a stay at Khuvgul Lake. However, it’s important to keep in mind that July will be the busiest month with the highest room rates due to the national holiday Naadam . We recommend visiting Khuvsgul Lake in June or August (the best month, in our opinion) instead. The lake is at its warmest the last week of August.

Khuvsgul lake 7-day itinerary​, day 1: drive ulaanbaatar to moron.

Also written as Murun, Moron is the capital of Khuvsgul Aimag (province) in northern Mongolia and is home to just under 50,000 Mongolians. From Moron, you can travel to Khuvsgul Lake and see the beauty of the national park and the best of northern Mongolia. You can also travel to the towns of Ulaan Uul and Tsagaan Nuur while you’re in this part of northern Mongolia, where you will meet the reindeer herders of Mongolia.

The best things to do in Moron include visiting the historical buildings located here, including the ancient Moron Monastery which dates back to 586 AD.

Other attractions in Moron include the Ikh Tenger Natural History Museum which features an impressive collection of artifacts from around the region as well as stunning displays of local flora and fauna. In addition, visitors can explore colorful markets featuring traditional products such as handmade carpets or textiles from nearby villages.

Filled with rustic charm and plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery, Moron is a must-visit spot when traveling through Khuvsgul province in northern Mongolia.

Depending on what your plans are for traveling in northern Mongolia, you may need to stop into the border patrol office in Moron to obtain a permit for your adventure.

Day 2: Drive Moron to Khuvsgul Lake

There’s no denying that Khuvsgul Lake is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of the world.

Located in the northern part of Mongolia, Khuvsgul Lake is part of a large area encompassing over 11,000 square kilometers and is surrounded by Khuvsgul Lake National Park.

From Moron, head towards the town of Hatgal, which is the southernmost point of the lake on the Moron-Hatgal Highway. As one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, Khuvsgul Lake provides visitors with stunning views and an unparalleled wilderness experience.

The lake boasts incredible wildlife – from bears, wolves, musk deer to moose and wolverines.

This renowned eco-tourism destination has a variety of activities available for visitors including boat tours, fishing expeditions, trekking and horseback riding. Diving is also available at Khuvsgul Lake and there’s even a dinosaur sculpture park located beneath the lake’s surface.

Apart from exploring Khuvsgul Lake National Park’s wildlife and forests, travelers can also marvel at its secluded beaches and rocky shorelines. Hiking up the surrounding mountains offers amazing views of the lake and will also give you a perspective of its sheer size and volume.

Day 3: Khuvsgul Lake – Visit the Reindeer Herders

While the majority of Mongolia’s Tsaatan Tribe, the tribe that herds and rides reindeer, live deep in the taiga, in the summer months some families will move their herds closer to Khuvsgul Lake. This gives tourists the chance to meet members of the tribe and their reindeer – something that’s great if you’re on a short itinerary. Normally, a journey to the tribe requires at least three days of arduous travel, which can be very challenging for people.

With the reindeer herders moving closer to the lake, this gives them the chance to meet more tourists where they can sell their crafts, teach them about their herding culture, and introduce people to their unique way of life. Today is a great day for meeting the reindeer riders, especially after several long days of travel.

Day 4: Khuvsgul Lake – Horse Trek

On day four of your Mongolia trip, you’ll want to hire a local nomadic herder as your guide and take a horse trek around the lake.

Horses are an essential part of Mongolian culture, and these are one of those travel opportunities that shouldn’t be missed. The views from the trek and the chance to bond with this magnificent creature will help you better understand Mongols and the way they live.

For centuries, horses have been an integral part of the nation’s nomadic lifestyle, providing transportation for travel, trade, and warfare. Today, the horse is still a symbol of Mongolian pride and heritage – from the traditional sports that are practiced to the unique breeds used in herding livestock across its vast grasslands. Day 5: Khuvsgul Lake – Lake Day

Make the most of your last day at Khuvsgul Lake by going fishing, hiring a boat to take you by the old ship Sukhbaatar, laying on the beach, and going for a dive.

Day 6: Goodbye Khuvsgul Lake

With a long trip back to Ulaanbaatar ahead of you, make your way from Khuvsgul Lake back to Moron. Or even beyond to Ikh-Uul or Bulgan, where you’ll be able to find tourist camps and some basic hotel options.

You may be tempted to fit in one more stop in Kharkhorin, the ancient capital city of Mongolia, but be warned – this means a lot of driving. Take our advice as you will.

Day 7: Drive Back to Ulaanbaatar

Try to get an early start on your drive back into Ulaanbaatar. Traffic around rush hour makes getting back into the city a slow-moving exercise in patience.

Lake Khuvsgul

Introduction.

Lake Khuvsgul is one of the most pristine large bodies of water of Asia, situated at 1645 meters above sea level. It is the twin lake of Baikal and its waters are equally blue. The setting is spectacular with Siberian taiga and the Horidal Saridag Mountain Range to the west. The lake is almost devoid of any ships, and is transparent to depth of 16-25 meters. There is lenok trout and an endemic gray-ling in the lake. It stretches some 125km from north to south and is 262 meters deep. It is not as deep as Baikal, but is part of the Baikal Rift system, which resulted from the pressures associated with the collision between India and Asia some 55 million years ago. Lake Baikal is 200km away and 1200 meters below inside Russia.

BRIEF OUTLINE ITINERARY

You will fly on a domestic flight to Murun, the aimag capital of Khuvsgul. You will stay in a ger camp at a secluded bay on the Ardavhar Peninsula. All meals will be served in the ger camp or as a picnic. A local guide will meet you when landing at ei-ther of the two locations. Murun airport is 110km and 3 hours from Hatgal village (102km), which is located at the southern-most tip of the lake. Weather permitting, you will be transferred to the Ardavhar Peninsula by boat which is a half hour north of Hatgal.

Trip Details

• Practicalities

Day 1: To Lake Khuvsgul

Arrival at Murun airport. If you start your journey in Ulaanbaa-tar pick up at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar is included. Transfer 3h from to Hatgal and on to Ardavhar Peninsula by boat.

Day 2: Lake Khuvsgul National Park

Ardavhar is a simple ger camp on the peninsula, located in a secluded bay all on its own. The shoreline is spectacular, with forested hills coming straight down into the blue lake. We will hike up the hills and over to Somo Had, a sacred point of rocks jutting into the lake. It is worshipped by the locals, who travel there and leave hadags and others offerings.

Day 3: Lake Khuvsgul National Park

We will hike through the forest for a few kilometers until we reach the steppe, where several nomadic families live and where we will have a visit with these hardy people.

Day 4 To Mörön 

A.m. Supported by a yak cart, which will carry our luggage to the departure point, we will travel by boat for about half an hour to Hatgal village. Transfer from there to Murun airport. If you fly to Ulaanbaatar transfer on arrival to your hotel in town.

You need to plan to stay in Mon-golia for at least 2 nights after the return from Khuvsgul Lake. Flights from the inte-rior may cancel due to poor visibility (rain/fog), which is why there needs to be some “rubber” time built in to the itinerary to ensure that you arrive back in time for your international flight departure. The approach to Ardavhar Peninsula is by boat directly onto the beach. While for most wind directions the shore is not that exposed, the lake can be choppy and windy to the extent we will use alternative arrangements to get there.

Practicalities:

This tour is supported by a jeep or minibus depending on the number of travelers. The approach to Ardavhar Peninsula is by boat directly onto the beach.

Accommodation:

We stay in Ger (yurt) Camps for the duration of this trip. These permanent camps are equipped with a restaurant and shared bathroom and shower blocks.

An English-speaking Mongolian guide will accompany you at all times. Other language guides such as Russian, French, German, Italian, Korean etc. available at additional cost, upon request.

The meals will be provided in the ger camps, or as picnic lunches.

We can organize hotel accommodation, city tours and transfers in Ulaanbaatar.

Living the mongolian way

Great place to stay and experience mongolian way of living, no tv, wifi, phone. Just nature and great company of the staff and livestocks of mongolia. The toilet is a hole in the ground covered by a shed. It is clean, but can be smelly to those used to city life. Not hot water supply, inform the staff that you like to hot water half an hour earlier so that they can boil it over camel dung 🙂

Khuvsgul Lake

Find out everything about visiting in Khuvsgul Lake Mongolia National Park – history, places to visit and travel, tourists Ger camps and tours.

The Khuvsgul Lake, ‘Blue Pearl’ as Mongolians call it venerating, is the biggest lake in Mongolia. It is located in the Northern Province, Khuvsgul on the southern region of the Eastern Sayan Mountain chain bordering with Russia. The Eastern Sayan Mountian range rises to over 3400m above sea level. Its highest peak of Munkh Saridag is 3491m above sea level. The Lake is 136km long and approximately 20-40 km wide, with its maximum depth 262,4m. About 70,000km2 lands, including Khuvsgul Lake became a National Park in 1992. Its biodiversity is huge, which will compile up numerous books and studies.

Khuvsgul Lake Geology

The region of Khuvsgul is said to have glaciation of the Middle and Late Pleastocene. It wide spread in the northern and western parts of the Horidol Saridag Mountains and its surrounding area. According to geologists, the Khuvsgul Lake was formed about 4-5 million years ago, becoming southern boundary of the Baikal Rift System which was formed following the collision between the Eurasian Continent and the Sub-continent of India. The south and southwestern regions of the lake’s watershed is covered with majorly carbonates (limestone, dolomite) with phosphorite deposits of Vendian-Early Cambrian.

There are some small alkaline rocks and sub-alkaline olivine basalts, a dark-colored, porphyritic volcanic rock, of Paleozoic in the same area. The northern and southern shores of the Lake contain ophiolites of Late Riphean, igneous turbidite deposits from Vendian-Early Paleozoic and granitoids of Paleozoic era, while the northeastern shore is composed of sediments related to Early Precambrian and Late Riphean-Early Paleozoic eras, such as granitoids and olivine basalts.

The water of the Khuvsgul Lake is characterized as fresh and as well as carbonate-rich alkaline lake water, which is the result of its extensive dolomite sedimentary rock layers. The water also contains the concentration of phosphorus. Anyhow, the Khuvsgul Lake is the biggest freshwater lake, which is 60% of the freshwater of Mongolia, generated by many small rivers and only river that outflows from the lake is called Eg River, which is a tributary of Selenge River, goes to the Lake Baikal.

Khuvsgul Lake Wildlife

There are numerous lagoons around the lake which become home for many migratory and epidemic birds and fishes, that is, the number is too much to mention here. Not only lagoons, but also forest, forest edge, meadows and shoreline. Wherever you go there are enough birds to watch for someone who loves birds. There are 4 islands namely Modon Khui, Khadan Khui, Dalain Khui and Baga Khui in the middle of the lake, which are worshiped by local people. The Lake and those islands are greatly venerated and worshiped by local people, as well as all Mongolians. You will find many Ovoos (establishment of piled rocks and woods with stripes of cottons or khadag), which usually built by Shamans.

Things to do in Khuvsgul lake Mongolia

For any tourist, hiking is a priority, of course. You can hike alongside the lakeshore, but also you can hike up to the mountains. There are several mountains you can climb, such as Horidol Saridag and its highest peak Munkh Saridag and any other mountains. From there you will enjoy a better look of the lake and surrounding. As you climb up in the forestry mountain you might encounter with wild animals. For instance squirrel, red deer, corsac fox, or any other wild mammals. You might just hear them howling, chewing or pecking. Just don’t wander around alone as you might lose your way and get lost in the wood.

There is a village called Khatgal is located on the southern shore of Khuvsgul Lake. It is the point where tourist camps started to be settled alongside lake shores throughout the lake. This might be the most packed tourist place among the other ones. The good thing is you can do every kind of activities with help of them. You can rent a bike from one of the camps and ride around the lake. Alternatively, you can find a horse to ride around too. Boat service is also easy to find when there are not too many domestic and foreign tourists. In the northern shores some reindeer herders Tsaatan come down to the lake from their high land of forest. They present their own culture with reindeers and teepees, which is a must-see display for any tourist.

Sukhbaatar Navy Ship

An interesting history about the Khuvsgul Lake is that, once we used to transport people and goods on a ship through the Selenge River and Orkhon River, as well as the Khuvsgul Lake in 20 th century, cooperating with the Soviet Union merchants. The one evidence of it is a Sukhbaatar ship, which is now being used for tourist matter. Moreover you can have a chance to travel on the ship board.

When to Visit Khovsgol Lake

You can visit the Khuvsgul Lake almost any time of year since there are places to stay nearby. But it would be enjoyable if you visit around warm July and August. Winter is not too cold and harsh. However still it gets cold enough to freeze the whole lake completely around December. Ice stays until April or May. Therefore local authority organizes Ice Festival yearly in February or March depending on the climate of the respective year.

About the Lake

Lake Khuvsgul is also known as the “younger sister” of Russia’s Lake Baikal, with its drainage basin ultimately sending freshwater to the latter body of water.

And like Lake Baikal, Lake Khuvsgul is millions of years old, making it one of the most ancient lakes in the world.

It’s framed by the magnificent Sayan mountain range, creating a picture perfect scenery between lake, mountain, and open countryside sky.

Below are some of the top things to do while visiting Lake Khuvsgul.

Whether you opt for a day trip or a complete journey circumnavigating Lake Khuvsgul, you won’t be disappointed by the view. From the shiny lake waters to the towering mountains, Lake Khuvsgul is one photogenic spot.

Your hike will take you up and down the mountainous terrain, which makes for a challenge. Come prepared physically for the excursion.

You can also climb the highest peak of the Sayan mountain range, Mönkh Saridag. At 3,491 meters high, it’s certainly no walk in the park.

Train appropriately, pack the right gear, and enlist a local guide to show you the way. On the border of Mongolia and Russia, Mönk Saridag’s views are some of the most enviable.

Horseback Riding

If you want to give your feet a break, horseback riding is another way to experience the great outdoors in Lake Khuvsgul. Similar to hiking, you can opt to take a day tour or a multi-day excursion.

Your accommodation should be able to help you set up a horseback riding tour for a day, but book in advance for overnight trips. You’ll have an unforgettable adventure riding along Lake Khuvsgul’s charming shores.

Lake Khuvsgul is also home to an incredible array of unique wildlife. Running around the lake are ibex, wolves, Siberian moose, mountain sheep, sables, and more cool creatures.

While you’re hiking or horseback riding, you might be lucky enough to come across some of these animals.

Fishing & Boating

You can also go fishing in Lake Khuvsgul. You could reel in a burbot, lenok, and other fish. A guided tour is a must, as Lake Khuvsgul also houses one endangered species.

In terms of boating, you can also go sailing or kayaking on the calm waters of the lake. Your guesthouse or ger camp should have recommendations for booking tours.

Reindeer Herders

Also in the province of Khuvsgul are some of the last reindeer herders in the world. Residing in the town of Tsagaan Nuur, you can arrange to visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders for a couple of days from Khatgal.

Arranging a tour would be useful for covering transportation, accommodation, and an insider’s expertise on reindeer herding culture, though it is possible to drive yourself and find a local ger camp to stay in.

Either way, it will require advance planning if you want to hop over and visit the Tsaatan reindeer herders.

Naadam Festival

For a few days in the middle of July, the people of Mongolia honor their past, celebrate their culture, and mark their independence from China with the Naadam Festival .

The Naadam Festival’s biggest event takes place in Ulaanbaatar, but a number of countryside villages, including Khatgal, will host their own mini Naadams. You’ll still get the complete Naadam experience, chowing down on local food, observing the cultural outfits, and watching the three main sports of archery, wrestling, and horseback riding.

But in Khatgal you’ll enjoy an intimate and up close experience. If you’re headed to Lake Khuvsgul in July, attending the local Naadam Festival is simply a must.

How To Get There

To get to Lake Khuvsgul, you can fly from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön. From there, you can take a van to the town of Khatgal on the lake’s southern shores.

Alternatively, you could also ride the bus all the way from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön, and then transfer to Khatgal via van from there.

In total, it will take you about 24 hours to complete the journey. The ride won’t be comfortable, but it will be a cool experience to travel with the locals.

Where to Stay

In Khatgal, you can stay at MS Guesthouse or at the Mongol Ujin Tour camp, which is a ger camp. A ger is a traditional Mongolian housing unit, and for that reason we strongly recommend the latter accommodation.

It’ll add an extra cultural element to your journey deep into the Mongolian countryside. Gers are circular tent-like structures, and the camp comes equipped with showers, toilets, and amazing food.

Further north of Khatgal, you can also try the lodgings at Art 88 Resort or Toilogt ger camp. They have gers and mini huts that you can retreat to at the end of each day. No matter where you stay, you’ll have great views near scenic Lake Khuvsgul.

Lake Khuvsgul, with its Russian cousin Lake Baikal, lies along a relatively recent north-south faultline in the Earth's crust. Like Baikal, Khuvsgul is of enormous depth — the deepest lake in North Asia, up to 900 feet deep with a surface area of some 2,700 square kilometers.

Its water is of an unrivaled purity, its summer banks dotted with wildflowers.

Winter around Khuvsgul lake

Winter finds the lake under more than a meter of ice, though it still teems with fish species. The surrounding countryside is a joy for the explorer — clean air, quiet glades in the taiga forest, sweeping mountainside, and the play of gentle sunlight on the waters of this lonely mere.

Khuvsgul Aimag

The Khuvsgul Aimag province, northernmost in Mongolia, is centered around its most distinguishing feature, the pristine Lake Khuvsgul. The province is also remarkable, however, in that it represents one of the most direct and contemporary convergences of the ancient shamanic and relatively modern (12th century) Buddhist cultures of Mongolia.

Here in Khuvsgul can still be found large populations of people from the old tribes — Buryat, Uriankhai, Darkhad, and Tsaatan — the reindeer people. They have lived here since prehistory, their traditional ranges extending northwards into Siberia.

Tsaatan tribe

The Tsaatan way of life shares much in common with that of the American Indians, who made the crossing to America from these parts across the Bering Strait, whilst it was frozen under the last Ice Age. The Tsaatan prefer to live in deerhide tepees rather than ger tents, and their totemic 'deerstones', carved with the deer that are said to guide the dead into the underworld, still dot the Khuvsgul landscape.

Khovsgol Lake NP

Lake Khovsgol National Park preserves a place of outstanding and pristine beauty where the Central Asian Steppe meets the Siberian Taiga. It  has long been regarded as “Blue Pearl of Mongolia”.  Lake Khovsgol is one of  the 17 ancient lakes worldwide and is variously estimated an between 2 and 5 million years old.  This exceptionally pritistine lake is 136 km long, 20-40 km wide, and up to 260 m deep; it contains nearly 70% of all fresh water in Mongolia. The only outlet river Eg flows to the Selenge River, that connects Lake Baikal with Lake Khovsgol. They are sister lakes. In 1992, this stunning landscape were set aside as Lake Khovsgol National Park. In 2011, the whole territory of park was expanded to 1.180.270 hectares when the uppe headwaters of the Uur River were made a part of the park. In recent years, this spectacular landscape of water and mountains that is sacred to so many has become the destination of more and more travelers, from all around Mongolia and beyond.

Shamanism – religion from ancient roots, is the oldest religion practice in Mongolia and centers on beliefs and rituals associated with shaman, a man or a woman regarded as having access to the “spirit world”. Full Itinerary

Day 1: arrival ulaanbaatar and stop at baga gazriin chuluu .

We travel to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a granite peak in Mongolia’s vast steppe, after breakfast. With wild animals, this mountain is 1760 meters high. Suitable walking terrain where you can see marmots and mountain goats. 

Day 2: Baga Gazriin Chuluu and Visit Yol Valley

On this beautiful day, we drive to the Gobi. We transfer to the local ger camp. After lunch, we go to the mountains and visit Yol Valley. This beautiful valley is named after the Lammergeyer vulture. We take a good walk inside the gorge for an hour and return to our vehicle. Then we head back to our ger camp. Overnight ger camp.

Day 3: Yoliin Am Gorge

We keep traveling toward the Gobi on this lovely day. We move on to a neighborhood ger camp. We travel up the mountain to see Yoliin Am Gorge after lunch. The Lammergeyer vulture gave its name to this lovely valley. We spend an hour exploring the canyon and then head back to our car. After that, we return to our ger camp. Nighttime ger camping.

Day 4: Explore Yol Valley and Khongor Sand Dunes

We begin our adventure with a mountainous drive. Our destination is the Gobi Gurvan Sakhan National Park’s most significant sand mass, the 200 m towering Khongor Sand Dunes.

Day 5: Khongor Sand Dunes

A leisurely day in the dunes. We go to the Sand Dunes, ride a camel, roam about, and discover the place.

Day 6: Get to Bayanzag and Ongi Ruined Monastery

We travel north on this lovely day to the Ongi Ruined Monastery, which originally housed of more than 5,000 people. We travel across a wide open area devoid of any barriers. To the ger camp, we move.

Day 7: Leave Ongi Monastery to Kharkhorin Town

We travel by car to the former Mongol capital from the 13th century on this lovely day. Today, a straightforward tiny town still remains. Since Kublai Khaan relocated the Mongol capital to Beijing, Kharkhorin town has lost its influence. You may visit the Erdene Zuu monastery and an excellent museum. Nighttime ger camping.

Day 8: Tsenher Hot Spring

We travel through Pine Tree Mountain and a lush green meadow this morning. With rivers and hot springs, the landscape is stunning. After arriving at our ger camp, we visit the hot spring’s source. Natural mineral water that is around 90C hot is flowing out. Locals have been using this hot spring as a medicinal remedy for a long time. There are lovely pools accessible. Nighttime ger camping.

Day 9: Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake

Drive further into Central Mongolia this morning. We travel to a dormant volcano that last erupted 5,000 years ago, leaving behind Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. To reach the volcano’s summit, there are clear trails to take. Then we keep driving to Terkhiin Tsagaan, a stunning lake.

We take a car to Jargalant Hot Springs. We remain in the former volcanic region. We’ll be seeing a local family after a good nap.

Day 10: Murun Town

We reach Murun, the vacation town that is the furthest north, as we continue to go north. We go to an old burial area with Deer stones that have writing in the shape of deer. Out of the 22 deer stones present, one is particularly intriguing since it features a human face.

Day 11: Khuvsgul Lake

After a filling breakfast, we go for Khuvsgul Lake, one of the most popular travel locations. This lake, which is 130 km long, 30 km broad, and 260 m deep, is often referred to as the Blue Pearl of Mongolia. We first move to our Ger camp. We next go a fair distance to a site of a Shamanistic rite. Additionally, we get to unwind and take in the scenery around the lake.

Day 12: Khuvsgul Lake and Activities

You can engage in exciting activities on the second day at Khuvsgul Lake. We’re going to Khyasaa Mountain on horses. This peak offers a wonderful perspective of the lake. On this day, we may also go hiking. After a long day on the mountain, we head back to our ger camp.

Day 13: Murun Town to Ulaanbaatar

Breakfast first thing in the morning, then travel to Murun town to catch a domestic aircraft to Ulaanbaatar. After our transfer, we have the afternoon free to browse for souvenirs. A final dinner. We’ll relax in the hotel this night.

Day 14: International Departure

Day-1 ULAANBAATAR CITY

Today, we meet you upon arrival and transfer you to the hotel. The city tour includes the museum of National History. We will enjoy our evening with a Mongolian traditional folk concert with talented throat singers enchanting dancers and a beautiful contortionist. Welcome dinner. Hotel /L,D/

Day-2 WHITE STUPA, TSAGAAN SUVARGA CLIFFS

After breakfast, we drive down to Tsagaan Suvarga cliffs, the ancient bottom of the Asiatic sea created this picturesque cliff more than 90 million years ago. The area is perfect for you to do some walking around, taking some photographs once you are down at the bottom of the cliffs. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-3 YOLIIN AM GORGE

On this beautiful day, we continue our drive to the Gobi. We transfer to a local ger camp. After lunch, we drive to the mountain and visit Yolyn Am Gorge. This beautiful valley is named after the Lammergeyer vulture. We take a good walk inside the canyon for an hour and return to our vehicle. Then we head back to our ger camp. Overnight ger camp. Day-4 KHONGOR SAND DUNES

Our journey starts with a drive through the mountains. We arrive at 200 m tall Khongor Sand Dunes, the most important sand mass of Gobi Gurvan Saïkhan National Park. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-5 KHONGOR SAND DUNES

Full relaxed day at sand dunes. We visit the Sand Dunes and ride a camel, walk and explore around the area. Ger camp /B,L,D/

Day-6 BAYANZAG FLAMING CLIFFS

This morning, we leave sand dunes behind and drive to the Flaming cliffs, where dinosaur skeletons and eggs are found. During the sunset, the cliffs change color between vibrant shades of orange and red that seems to be on fire. Enjoy this stunning view while relaxing on the cliffside. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-7 ONGI RUINED MONASTERY

Ongi Ruined monastery was home to more than 5 000 people once. While driving towards this monastery, we pass through big open spaces with no obstacles and a marvelous view. We transfer to the ger camp. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-8 KHARKHORIN

Starting our day early, we drive to the ancient capital of Mongols in the 13th century, Kharkhorin. In modern times, instead of the capital, there is a simple small town in its place. We will visit a good museum with remains found from the old capital and also visit the Erdene Zuu monastery, built with remains of the ancient capital. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-9 TERKHIIN TSAGAAN LAKE

This morning, drive deeper into Central Mongolia. We visit a sleeping volcano that erupted 5000 years ago and created a lake called Terkhiin Tsagaan. There are easy paths to follow to the top of the volcano. Then we contiDay-10 JARGALANT HOT SPRINGnue to drive to the beautiful lake- Terkhiin Tsagaan. Ger camp/B,L,D/

We drive to Jargalant hot spring place. We are still in the ancient volcanic area. After a good rest, we will be visiting a local family. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-11 MURUN TOWN

Continuing our drive towards the North, we visit the most north getaway town – Murun. We visit an ancient site of a burial ground and Deer stones with deer scripts. There is one interesting deer stone with a human face out of the 22 that are here. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-12 KHUVSGUL LAKE

Starting our morning with a hearty breakfast, we drive to one of the most sought destinations, Khuvsgul lake. Also known as the Blue Pearl of Mongolia, this lake is a 130km long 30 km wide 260m deep freshwater lake. First, we transfer to our Ger camp. After, we take a good walk to a Shamanic ritual place. We also get to relax near the lakeshore and enjoy the view. Ger camp /B,L,D/

Day-13 KHUVSGUL LAKE

The second day at Khuvsgul lake has adventurous activities you can participate in. We will go horse riding to Khyasaa Mountain. The view of the lake from this mountain is simply stunning. Hiking is also an option for us on this day. Full day at the mountain and we return to our ger camp. Ger camp/B,L,D/

Day-14 MURUN TOWN – ULAANBAATAR

Early start with breakfast and drive to Murun town to take an internal flight to Ulaanbaatar. We transfer to the hotel and free afternoon with some souvenir shopping. Farewell dinner. Hotel /B,L,D/

They worked very well as a team to make sure we are comfortable (including nature calls) . While communications is limited with the drivers .. we managed to express our joy and fun.

The booking and administrative details and follow up needs to be improved.. response is generally slow and communications not so clear. There was a hiccup in the beginning , dinner booking was not made in UB and we had to walk a good one hour before we settled on one available dining place. The next two weeks were rugged .. an unconventional travel that we embarked on in 2 jeeps traversing 3000 km. The country its very vast and have beautiful spots to show off and the culture has long history. It was truly a out of the norm experience to stay at gers ( keep getting our head knocked for the low doors)… using common toilets and showers … limited electricity and water supply hours… we were very happy when we had ensuite toilets or ensuite shower/toilet for some accommodation. The food is better than we had expected and the tour agency provided extra fruits for us at our request.. We love the flaming cliffs ; the terej park; hiking up volcano to name a few… but most of us the journey in the jeep is unforgettable.. the bumpy; rocky; winding rides and the beautiful landscapes as we ride along. Buyna, Derem & Baija became a part of the travel fun too!

The community is united and helpful. The Ger camps that we stayed are better than our expectation in terms of facilities and food. What is the electrical plug type in Mongolia?

At the ger camps with generators, electricity will be available for a certain amount of time and turn them off during the night. Some ger camps can be connected to the local town’s electricity, so they can also have electricity all night. In Mongolia, electrical plug types vary. Most are Type C and Type E with 2 round holes.

Do ger camps provide toiletries?

Ger camps do not provide toiletries. Please make sure to bring your travel toiletries. For your own comfort and usage, it is good to also bring towels. A travel towel that is compact, very absorbent, and fast-drying is the best.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag to this tour?

For your own comfort and usage, you can bring sleeping bags, but every accommodation of our trip offers fresh sterilized linen and cover.

What is the domestic flight baggage allowance?

The baggage allowance for a domestic flight in Mongolia is 15kgs in total: 10kg for check-in luggage and 5kg for hand luggage. For extra luggage, you pay 3000-5000 Tugriks (local currency) per extra kilogram.

Will the be internet during my visit to Mongolia?

Internet routers can be quite slow, so you can buy a data sim card. It is the best option to have internet during the trip. It can be purchased after your arrival at the Mongolian International Airport.

What food be provided during this tour?

Water will always be provided, but personal water bottles that keep their temperature are highly recommended and requested. Hot water can be requested from the Ger camps. Your tour guide can request them for you should you require hot water. For the duration of the trip outside Ulaanbaatar city, you will be dining at the ger camp and on a few occasions picnic lunch during stops from driving between destinations.

Khuvsgul Lake Tour Highlights:

• This private tour takes 3 days to cover the Northern Mongolia for Khuvsgul Lake which is the second largest freshwater lake in Central Asia, making up over 1% of the world’s freshwater storage. It is one of the most beautiful and scenic spots in Mongolia, where high mountain peaks, forests, lush meadows and steppes all form a rich ecosystem and diverse wildlife habitats. Also, possible to visit Tsaatan minority who live in huts and reindeer herding.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Flight to northern mongolia- khovsgol lake national park.

Today, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the city airport for the flight to Murun, which is the center of the Northern Province. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transferred to the Khovsgol Lake, which is known as the Switzerland of Mongolia and second the clearest lake in Central Asia. Take a 2 hours’ drive to the Khatgal village on the shore of the lake and explore the village’s life, the market and main port of the lake. On the way, we will see hundreds of grazing livestock and wildlife of northern region of Mongolia Khovsgol province is home to the southernmost indigenous reindeer herding people (Tsaatan) in the world. Some of Tsaatan families came from remote Taiga at the summer camp near to the lake from June until end of August. Reindeer herders practice shamanism and live in teepees and moving around 5 times a year. We will meet reindeer herders and explore their daily life, custom and sacraments. Check-in and dinner at Tourist camp, which is located near to the lake. Accommodation : Tourist camp. Meals :  L, D. Total distance : Flight ~1.5hrs,  Driving for 140km ~ 3.5hrs.

Full day at Khovsgol Lake National Park

This morning, we will explore the national park from horse back. Mongolia is the best destination for horse riding trip and especially Khovsgol Lake is the best recommended place for this experience. After given preliminary instructions, orientation about horse riding, we will discover around nature from horseback until lunch time. In the afternoon is free time for you to be on your own. You can explore the surrounding hills and walking along the shore of the lake. The Lake water is well known for crystal clear blue and surrounded by beautiful lash green deep forest and magnificent mountains. Also, there is a great opportunity to do hiking, kayaking, ride motor moat or just enjoy at wild nature to take photos. Accommodation : Tourist camp. Meals : B, L, D.

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar & transfer to the hotel

Early this morning, we will drive to the local airport in Murun town and take a return flight to Ulaanbaatar. On the way, we will visit Uushig ancient Deer Stone Monument as another wonder of the Khuvsgul region. This is most clearly depicted deer stones left behind by bronze-age men. A deer, an arch, a shield, a horse, a knife, the moon, the sun and a mirror figured belt were engraved on the stones. Upon arrival in the city airport, transferred to your hotel in the city. Blue Pearl of Mongolia: Khuvsgul Lake

About the Lake

The two lakes connect through the Eg and Selenge rivers. Eg is the only outflow of Khuvsgul Lake, and at the same time, it is a tributary of Selenge, which flows into the Baikal Lake.

Khuvsgul holds almost 70% of Mongolian fresh water reserves and its water is drinkable without any treatment.

Like Baikal Lake, Khuvsgul is a rift lake. It is 136 kilometers long, and its maximum depth is 262 meters. In the land of deserts and where the most lakes are salty, Khuvsgul is considered sacred.

The lake itself is an astounding sight, but the great Sayan mountain range which surrounds it creates perfect scenery and make Khuvsgul a must-see destination if you are traveling to this part of Asia.

Khuvsgul Lake is located in the northwest of Mongolia, near the border with Russia.

The area around the lake is a national park bigger than Yellowstone and home to many wildlife species, such as elk, wolf, musk deer, Siberian moose, brown bear, and others. The lake is home to endangered endemic fish species - Khuvsgul grayling.

Things To Do at Khuvsgul

For adventurers who seek pristine nature and wildlife, Khuvsgul Lake is a perfect destination. There are lots of activities you can engage in around the lake, or on the lake itself.

For those who like hiking, the area around Khuvsgul is excellent for both sightseeing and mountain climbing. The highest peak of the Sayan mountain range (3491 meters) is near the lake, and it will provide you with the best possible view of Khuvsgul.

If you think that's too much walking, you can opt for horseback riding instead. There are lots of accommodations at Khuvsgul that provide daily, and even overnight trips, which is the best way to experience the Mongolian wilderness.

If you like fishing or boating, you can do that too on Khuvsgul. However, since the lake houses an endangered species, a guided tour is a must. Of course, there are other species of fish in the lake you can catch. Boating or kayaking on the calm waters of Khuvsgul Lake is another activity you have to try while you are there.

Day 01: ub – murun – khuvsgul lake.

• We will gather at the new Chinggis Khaan Airport at 06:30 in the morning and fly to Murun at 08:00. As soon as we land in Murun, we begin our journey to the deep blue Lake Khuvsgul, a wonder of Mongolia.
• On the way, we will stop at the tourist complex for the intersection of 50: 100 latitude and longitude of the globe. There is only 4 intersection point in the world. 2 of the point is located in the sea and one is located in the highway of Canada. For that reason, this point is the only place where people can stay. DAY 03: FREE DAY AT KHUVSGUL LAKE

• Last day on the shore of Lake Khuvsgul – the blue pearl of Mongolia. On this day, free at leisure. You can spend a day with an interesting activity such as hiking, biking and others which offered by the resort. Guests are also welcome to swim in the resort’s swimming pool.

DAY 04: KHATGAL – MURUN - ULAANBAATAR

• After breakfast we will return to Murun city. Along the way, we will visit at deer stone complex of the Uushigiin uvur. This monument is one of the largest monuments of the Eurasian deer stone monument complex and occupies a special place in the study of ancient peoples who carried the culture of hirgisuur and deer statues.
• Our flight will depart from Murun at 12:30 and land at the new Chinggis Khaan Airport at 13:30, ending our three-day trip to the shores of Lake Hövsgöl in northern Mongolia.

DETAILED TOUR ITINERARY

Upon arrival at Genghis Khan International Airport, you are met by our guide and transferred to the hotel in the city center.

Rest of the day is for rest and to recover jet lag and travel fatigue.

Overnight in 4* HOTEL Meals: Dinner

Following breakfast, we set out to explore Ulaanbaatar-the capital city of Mongolia-the home to over a one third of the country's population where the traditional gers and Buddhist temples coexist with sky-kissing towers! Begin from the Gandan Monastery-Mongolia's most revered religious site-home to more than 100 Buddhist monks with beautiful chapels, courtyards and a giant 75-foot gold gilded Buddha statue.

Next, we stop in the Natural History Museum that showcases the spectacular fossils found in the Gobi desert. After lunch, we visit the National Museum of Mongolian History and culture that has rich collection of stone and Bronze Age artifacts, costumes, sacred relics and items related to the nomadic life such as hunting and fishing tools.

The balance of the day is open for you to stroll the streets of the city on your own.

Following breakfast, we are transferred to the airport for flight to Muron in the north. Muron is the headquarter of the Khovsgul Province. We meet our local guide at the airport and then we drive by 4WD vehicle through the vast Mongolian steppe into the forested mountains and finally we arrive at the Lake Khovsgul-Mongolia's largest lake. The lake, also known as the "Dark Blue Pearl" of Mongolia is situated amidst the pristine nature with beautiful forests, mountains and meadows and abundant with bird species and orchids.

During whole lovely day, you will have an opportunity to ride reindeer and observe them. We spend the next two days in walking, hiking, horseback riding in the environs of the lake and the nearby mountains and visiting the local nomadic families. Optional boating trip is available on request.

The area of Khuvsgul Lake, raised well above sea level, is 2760ms. Its length is 136 km and width is 36.5 km, and up to 262 m deep.

Lake Khuvsgul National Park was established in 1992 to protect the lake and its surrounding 70,000 sq km area. The park encompasses parts of four sum territories - Alag-Edene, Renchinlhumbe, Hankh, and Chandmani Undur - as well as Hatgal village in Khovsgol province .

The park is home to 63 species of mammals, including Argali wild sheep, ibex, brown bear, wolverine, sable, moose, snow leopard, lynx, musk deer, Siberian moose, and wild boar. The lake itself is home to nine species of fish, including Omul, Lenok, Umber, Siberian roach, Eurasian perch, sturgeon, and Taimen.

The Hovsgol Lake area is a large national park that is strictly protected and regarded as a transition zone between the Central Asian Steppe and the Siberian Taiga. In 1997, the Hovsgol Long-Term Ecological Research Site was established and an extensive research program on the lake began.

Heading through the endless pine trees and into the open valleys dotted with the white Gers and grazing herds, you'll be wondering if you haven't set foot back in 19th-century Montana.

In total, 244 species of birds have been recorded in the park, many of which are migratory waterfowl that spend the summer in the park's wet meadows and lagoons.

The highlight of the area is the ethnic reindeer herders called Tsaatan . These ethnic groups of Turkic origin related to the Tuvans are the most exotic and mystical people with small numbers, inhabit in the amazing beautiful taigas.

Tsaatan people worship "the Eternal Blue Sky and Mother Earth" and retained an ancient, unusual culture based on shamanistic rituals and forest-based reindeer-herding. Shamanism , rather than Buddhism, is the religion of choice in these parts.

Should You Visit Khuvsgul Lake in Mongolia?

Lake Khuvsgul, sometimes transliterated as Lake Hovsgol, is the largest fresh water lake in Mongolia and is the source of 70 percent of Mongolia’s fresh drinking water. The lake is very special to the Mongolian people and is often billed by local tourism agencies as a must-see sight.

But is it really? In this article, I’ll share with you my honest opinion about whether you should include the lake on your list of things to do in Mongolia .

Where is Khuvsgul Lake?

Along with the Gobi Desert and the Naadam Festival , Khuvsgul Lake is probably one of the most well-known attractions in Mongolia. That is, to the extent that anything is well-known in this very off-the-beaten-path country. 

It’s located far northern Mongolia, in Khuvsgul aimag (district) near the border with Russia. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not too far from the famous Lake Baikal in Russia. In fact, the two lakes are connected by the Ekh River and are known as sister lakes.

How Big Is Lake Khuvsgul?

Looking at a map, it’s easy to see who the little sister is in this family.

Lake Khuvsgul is the little one in the bottom left corner. Lake Baikal is the one that takes up the rest of the frame.

Still, when you’re standing on the shores of Lake Khuvsgul, it looks pretty big. I’ve stood on the shores of both lakes, and from that perspective, it’s not obvious that one is any bigger than the other. 

And Lake Khuvsgul is certainly a giant in the minds of most Mongolians.

The direct translation of Khuvsgul Lake in the Mongolian language is Khuvsgul Nuur. Sometimes, though, it’s called Khuvsgul Dalai instead, which means “Ocean Khuvsgul”, or Dalai Éj, which means “Ocean Mother”. And yes, that’s the same Dalai as in the Dalai Lama . 

That title was originally bestowed upon the spiritual leader by Mongolian Buddhists, who follow a form of Buddhism very similar to Tibetan Buddhism.

In addition to the literal meaning of “ocean”, Dalai can also refer to something big or great.

And when talking about Khuvsgul, it kind of has both meanings. At 136 kilometers (85 miles) long and 262 meters (860 feet) deep, it’s certainly big. It’s also the closest thing this landlocked country has to an ocean.

Is Lake Khuvsgul Protected?

Yes, the entire lake area is protected as Lake Hovsgol National Park, one of a dozen or so national parks in Mongolia. 

Other national parks of note include Hustai National Park, home to some of the last remaining wild horses in the world, and the Gun Galuut Nature Reserve, which protects a wide diversity of ecosystems, including high mountains, steppes and wetlands.

Ecologically, the Lake Khuvsgul National Park is extremely important because it’s a transition zone between the Siberian taiga and the Central Asian steppe. 

Khuvsgul is more than 2 million years old, making it one of the most ancient lakes in the world. It’s also one of the cleanest, and the water is perfectly safe to drink without any treatment.

What Wildlife Can You See at Khuvsgul Lake?

While reindeer tourism does exist at Lake Khuvsgul, it's not good for the reindeer or their environment.

The lake and surrounding area is home to a variety of fish, birds and mammals, including brown bear, Siberian moose and elk. Of course, your chances of seeing these animals on a quick visit are pretty low, especially if you stick to the tourist camps on the southern end of the lake.

When Nick and I visited Khuvsgul, we saw seagulls, marmots, cows, yaks and reindeer, all pretty close up. Only the seagulls and marmots were wild, though. The cows, yaks and reindeer were being raised for their flesh, milk and/or skin.

Also, the reindeer were tied up and being exploited for photographs with tourists. I didn’t realize this until it was too late, and I regret going to see them.

The reindeer’s natural habitat is the taiga, and traditionally this was where the Tsataan reindeer herders lived. More recently, some Tsataan families have moved down to the lakeshore in the hopes of profiting from the tourism industry. 

Their settlement is about a four-hour boat ride from Khatgal, where most of the tourist camps are. This is unsustainable, though, as the land there is not suitable for grazing reindeer. 

And then there’s the lone Tsataan man with three reindeer and a tepee, who I went to visit. He sets up camp just outside of Khatgal and makes a living solely from tourists who pay for selfies with the reindeer. If I had known, I would not have gone.

The only way to see the reindeer responsibly is to trek off-road for 45 kilometers into the taiga. This area is not accessible by vehicles and is normally reached on horseback, which poses a whole other set of animal rights issues.

If you want to do it on foot, you could ask tour companies if they can arrange this, but they may be puzzled by the request. Alternatively, try contacting the Tsaatan Community and Visitors Center (TCVC) in Tsagaan Nuur directly. You will need a Mongolian speaker to help you with this.

We didn’t attempt this, as it seemed quite complicated. And, as much as I wanted to see reindeer, I had mixed feelings about meeting the reindeer herders. 

Experiencing traditional ways of life in Mongolia inevitably means being confronted with animal exploitation. It’s a tricky thing to navigate as a vegan.

What Activities Are Available at Lake Khuvsgul?

There are lots of activities available at Lake Khuvsgul, including boat trips, hiking, kayaking, and even scuba diving! A ger camp resort called Great Sea Resort offers diving and PADI courses in the summer months.

I don’t recommend swimming without a wetsuit, though, unless you are very thick-skinned. The lake stays frozen from January to May, so you can imagine what the water temperatures are like the rest of the year.

On our visit to Khuvsgul Lake, we went on a boat trip and a hike, so I’ll describe those two activities in a bit more detail.

There is a large ferry boat called Sukhbaatar that does tourist excursions around the lake, but it takes a long time to fill up. Another option is the small, motorized speedboats, which leave much more frequently.

We were able to organize a speedboat trip at Tsenguun Khovoo ger camp, where we were staying. They also have kayaks for rent.

The standard speedboat trip seems to be a round trip from Khatgal to the Wishful Rocks and back. Wishful Rocks is a sacred place that’s popular with Mongolian tourists. They come to make wishes at a pile of stones on a promontory that juts out into the lake. 

There were a few dozen people there when we visited, but we were the only foreigners. We had seen similar piles of rocks at other shamanic sites, so that was nothing new. But there were good views from the promontory, and the boat ride itself was a lot of fun.

Nick and I tried to hike along the lake shore, but we weren’t very successful. We were hoping to hike through beautiful nature like we had done on the Great Baikal Trail a couple of weeks earlier, but it was nothing like that.

The shores of Khuvsgul Lake, at least around Khatgal where we were, felt way too developed. This is especially ironic in Mongolia, the most sparsely populated country in the world.

During most of our time in Mongolia, we felt completely immersed in nature and very removed from civilization. But at Khuvsgul Lake, the shore was littered with garbage, despite being touted as one of the most pristine lakes on Earth.

Just past our camp, we came across some huge abandoned oil tanks. These were left over from the Soviet era, when the Russians used to drill for oil here. 

Beyond that was a short, pleasant stretch of trail through the forest. This soon became a wide gravel road, though, and we kept running into fancy tourist ger camps.

Some of them weren’t even real gers, just log cabins in the shape of a ger. The fancy Leona Resort at least had a nice log swing, though.

You might have gathered by now that I wasn’t a huge fan of Khuvsgul Lake. There is one thing that might convince me to return there, though, and that’s the Khuvsgul Ice Festival.

This is a relatively new festival that has been held for the past five years or so in early March. The aim is to increase tourism during the winter months, when few tourists travel to Mongolia, and also to give the locals a chance to liven up the dull, cold winter with some fun games.

The lake is completely frozen over at this time of year and becomes the venue for a variety of competitions, ranging from ice skating races to ice wrestling! Locals perform traditional music, dance and shamanic rituals in colorful costumes. 

The Tsataan reindeer herders also make an appearance at the festival, so this is a good opportunity to see them if that interests you. 

This is also a good alternative to the much less animal-friendly Golden Eagle festival, which is held in Ulaanbaatar city around the same time of year. At that festival, hunters show off their ability to train eagles to hunt foxes, hares and other small animals on their behalf, while they follow on horseback.

In 2020, the Khuvsgul Ice Festival will be held on March 2nd and 3rd. A handful of companies organize group and private tours for people who want to attend. Temperatures typically don't reach higher than -10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit), so pack plenty of warm clothes! 

Is Lake Khuvsgul A Worthwhile Place to Visit in Mongolia?

Apart from the Ice Festival (which I haven’t been to yet), my honest answer to this question is no. 

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVED Mongolia! But out of all the places I visited in the country, I liked Khuvsgul Lake the least. And I definitely didn’t think it was worth the very long and bumpy drive required to get there.

Khuvsgul is 780 kilometers (484 miles) from Ulaanbaatar, and much of that is along dirt tracks that could hardly be called roads. 

Our driver Adya did an amazing job and made sure we were as comfortable as possible. But no matter how comfortable a vehicle you’re in, you’ll be sick of being jostled around by the time you reach Khuvsgul.

In hindsight, we probably should have looked into visiting Khuvsgul as our first stop in Mongolia, since we weren’t that far away when we visited Irkutsk and Lake Baikal in Russia. Instead we took the train down to Ulaanbaatar and then drove all the way back up to Khuvsgul. Not smart.

I do recognize that Khuvsgul is important to Mongolian people for cultural and spiritual reasons, and for reasons of national pride. Most lakes in Mongolia are salty, so this huge source of fresh water is rare and is considered sacred.

Unfortunately, it’s been ruined by tourism, at least in the southern areas around Khatgal, where most tourists stay.

Perhaps you could probably have a much different experience if you went further away from Khatgal. But that would involve even more uncomfortable transport, which you will have had enough of.

So, unless Khuvsgul has some special significance for you, as a first-time visitor to Mongolia I would choose a different lake instead. It’s not hard in Mongolia to find a pristine, off-the-beaten-track lake with no other tourists.

Here are a few suggestions (which I have not been to personally):

Other Alternative Lakes in Mongolia

In eastern Mongolia, there's Black Heart Blue Lake, where Genghis Khan was crowned as King of all the Mongols in 1189.

In western Mongolia, there's Mt. Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, which is home to the Altai Mountains and three large fresh water lakes --  Khoton, Khurgan and Dayan.

Within the Gun Galuut Nature Reserve, about 130 kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar, are Lake Ikh-Gun and Lake Ayaga. The latter is said to be particularly good for birdwatching.

The Ideal Visit to a Lake in Mongolia

After our disappointing visit to Khuvsgul, our guide Ulzii from Vegan Travel Mongolia took us to a little-known lake that her family has been visiting for years. We spent the next two nights there, and it was perfect.

I’m not going to reveal the name of the lake, because it’s a very special and fragile place. I would hate to think that I’d contributed to it being ruined like Khuvsgul has been.

If you contact Ulzii through the Vegan Travel Mongolia Facebook page , I’m sure she’ll be happy to arrange your trip there. Currently, no other tour companies bring tourists to this lake.

There are just a couple of small ger camps, and these are used only by Mongolian locals. Our camp had no electricity, showers or phone network, so don’t expect the kind of luxury that you can find at Khuvsgul.

But if you want to unplug and get away from it all, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place for it.

Apparently it can get busy with domestic campers in July, but it was very quiet when we were there in mid-August. Although there was still trash on the lake shore.

The hiking here was excellent, and the hill near our camp made the perfect sunset-viewing spot. Surprisingly, the weather was much warmer than at Khuvsgul, and so was the water temperature. 

We could even swim in the lake! Except that we kept getting nibbled at by little critters in the water that looked like tiny shrimp. The locals believe that these critters take away your illness when they bite you and are therefore good for your health.

While I wasn’t too fond of these critters, I adored all the ducks, geese and swans that we saw swimming in the lake. Oh, and this beautiful grasshopper.

Final Thoughts

I’m so glad that we visited this hidden lake on Ulzii’s recommendation. I had asked her to take us to Khuvsgul because I’d read great things about it on some tour company websites, but it was a disappointment.

In hindsight, I should have left it up to her plan our whole itinerary based on her local knowledge. Mongolia has plenty of pristine spots of natural beauty that are more rewarding than Khuvsgul.

Thank you for the honest review. I think it is great that you do not reveal the location of the secret lake. Too many amazing spots are being ruined due to geotagging. Whilst I would have loved to have visited Antelope Canyon in the US, the crowds make it an unsustainable drain on the natural environment so we skipped it for a much lesser known slot canyon. That is such as shame there are oil tanks near a trail by the lake too!

Thank you for sharing your opinion . It was indeed true the lake shores were destroyed. This year it was only Mongolians who were visited due to corona virus. It must be protected . Few years ago when i visited there things were much better. I loved Khuvsgul . Its just unfortunate that we Mongolians cant do anything about it which makes me sad .
