Onlookers and protesters: a split scene outside Biden fundraiser in Westchester County

synonym of home visit

IRVINGTON ‒ Nobody was getting anywhere near the movie-star mansion where President Joe Biden was set to hobnob with campaign donors.

So there at the police barricade, a good distance from where Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were throwing the fundraiser, a curious crowd had gathered on both sides of Broadway, people with kids and dogs and phones at the ready in hopes of a glimpse of the Biden motorcade approaching.

Then came the protesters.

They had marched up Main Street and onto Broadway in Irvington, holding a banner, signs and Palestinian flags, and chanting slogans to denounce the civilian toll of Israel's war in Gaza and accusing Biden of complicity. They stopped at the barricade and continued their protest, occupying one side of the street with the onlookers on the other side and a line of cops in the middle.

"Hey hey, ho ho," they chanted, led by someone with a bullhorn. "Genocide Joe has got to go."

The scene unfolded Thursday evening in the Westchester County village where Biden stopped to gather campaign cash. Earlier that day, he visited New York further upstate with Gov. Kathy Hochul and Sen. Chuck Schumer to celebrate Micron's plans for a complex of computer-chip plants near Syracuse, a project spurred by a 2022 law Biden signed.

Afterward, Biden flew to New York City and back north to Westchester to join the 5 p.m. fundraiser at the actor-couple's home, tucked on a side road off Broadway and near the Hudson River. The minimum price to get in was $3,300 per person or $5,000 for a couple. Top donors were asked to shell out $100,000.

Biden in Syracuse: Bright future for Micron, chip industry in New York. What he said

‘A practical problem-solver’? Or losing ground over Gaza?

Among those hoping to see the president pass was Constance Kehoe, a Democratic district leader and former Irvington village trustee. Gathered with her husband and friends near the police barricade at Heritage Hill Road, she held a handmade sign that welcomed "Scranton Joe" and "Irvington Joe" and urged people to vote.

She said she was thrilled about any president visiting her home village, particularly one with accomplishments on infrastructure and reproductive rights. She understood the antiwar protests to a degree, having seen similar ones against the Vietnam War on the Columbia campus in 1968. But she felt the current Middle East situation was more complex, and she enthusiastically supported Biden.

"I think he's the experienced, practical problem-solver, and what could be more needed at a time like this?" she said.

From the protesters' perspective, what's needed is strong pressure from Biden for Israel to end its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.

Nada Khader, one of the activists who helped organize Wednesday's protest, argued beforehand that the Biden campaign must see the political importance of heeding the young war protesters on college campuses now. Without their support, he could lose the key swing states he needs to beat Trump again, costing him the election.

"I cannot see them voting for Biden," said Khader, executive director of the WESPAC Foundation in Westchester. "He's not energizing them to come out and vote."

The protesters started their march at Irvington's Metro-North Station, where more than a dozen Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officers had gathered before their arrival, accompanied by a SWAT vehicle. The police presence was massive. All along Broadway and its side roads, from its intersection with Interstate 287 at the Cuomo Bridge to Main Street in Irvington, police from many agencies ‒Yonkers, Port Chester, New Rochelle, Dobbs Ferry, many others ‒ stood watch or waited in parked vehicles.

At the barricade, the protesters kept a steady stream of chants going, accompanied by a drum. "Israel, stop the slaughter!" they called. "Cease-fire now!"

Watching them with anger was Anne Sommerfeld, an Irvington resident who fumed at their use of the word "genocide" because she lost a set of grandparents and other relatives to the Holocaust. What is happening in Gaza today is not comparable to the Nazis' mass extermination of the Jews, in her view.

"I don't even like Netanyahu," she said of the Israeli prime minister. "But Israel has got to exist."

Like Kehoe, she said she had opposed the Vietnam War but saw the current situation in Gaza as different.

Nearby, Dr. Susan Rubin, a dentist from Chappaqua, stood with the protesters, holding a handmade side on cardboard that read, "I want to live." She vehemently opposed the war in Gaza and, like Khader, warned that Biden risks losing the youth vote by supporting Israel.

Rubin pointed out that she's Jewish and recently attended a Passover seder in Brooklyn with fellow Jews who oppose the war.

"'Never again' means 'never again,'" Rubin said, invoking a vow about the Holocaust. "That's why I'm here as a Jewish person."

Harris at the White House Correspondents Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington DC on 27 April 2024.

Kamala Harris visits Atlanta to tout investments in minority communities

The vice-president returned to the city, pressing the case to Black voters that the Biden administration has been there for them

Kamala Harris once again visited Atlanta to tout investments made by the Biden administration in minority and underserved communities, highlighting $158m in infrastructure spending on a project to build a cap over Atlanta’s most traveled highway, the Downtown Connector.

The vice-president’s appearance is the continuation of a full court press in Georgia to solidify support among Democrats – and specifically Black Democrats – for the administration.

Harris has visited Atlanta repeatedly since winning office, acting as one of the administration’s primary surrogates to the Black community, keenly aware that Georgia remains in play and that perceptions of flagging support among African American voters could be the difference between a win and a loss.

Harris kicked off a nationwide tour discussing economic opportunities for minority voters with this visit, she said.

The Atlanta project, which local planners call the Stitch, would build parkland and mixed-use buildings including affordable housing and is meant to address the intentional destruction of Black communities by highway construction in the 60s, Harris said.

“There was this whole policy push called urban renewal,” Harris said. “It was supposed to be about making life easier for people … but essentially it was about making it easier for folks who had wealth and means to move to the suburbs and still have access to downtown. It ended up decimating these communities for years.” Harris said the Stitch project would create an estimated 13,000 jobs and help reconnect a community bifurcated by the highway.

Harris spoke on Monday at the Georgia International convention center near Atlanta’s airport in a conversation moderated by Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, hosts of the financial podcast Earn Your Leisure. She emphasized the work the Biden administration has been doing to expand access to capital for communities of color.

Black entrepreneurs do not have access to the capital needed to launch capital-intensive companies, Bilal said. “Especially when we look at the next generation of unicorn companies – billion-dollar companies – they’re tech companies,” Bilal said.

That access is often about relationships that Black business owners often do not have. But federal spending can provide a base from which a business can grow and ultimately build those relationships, Harris said. Home ownership is also critical for building intergenerational wealth and entrepreneurial opportunities, as a source of equity for startups.

“To achieve true equality, we must have an economic agenda,” Harris said. “That agenda must mean speaking to people’s economic ambitions.”

Harris’s message sharply contrasts with increasing rhetoric from Republicans decrying diversity, equity and inclusion programs. “In spite of those who want to attack DEI, you can’t truly invest in the strength of our nation if you don’t pay attention to diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Among other programs and spending made by the federal government since 2021, Harris presented the Stitch as an example of what the Biden administration has accomplished.

After federal courts struck down zoning laws that segregated housing, federal legislators responded with the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. Massive highway projects like Atlanta’s Downtown Connector were deliberately driven through Black neighborhoods in the name of “urban renewal”. In Atlanta’s case, the connector – which brings I-75 and I-85 together – displaced residents and businesses around Auburn Avenue, which was the heart of Atlanta’s Black middle class.

after newsletter promotion

Martin Luther King Jr grew up a five-minute walk from where the connector splits the city today, a massive highway with more than 300,000 cars passing through every day. Similarly, the construction of I-20 decimated the Summerhill neighborhood, once home to many of Atlanta’s Black doctors. Summerhill has only recently recovered its economic vibrancy. But even as much of the rest of Atlanta experiences gentrification, the area around Auburn Avenue is poor.

The representative Nikema Williams and the senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff addressed attendees briefly before the main event, each extolling the virtues of infrastructure investments in Georgia from the infrastructure bill. The Stitch received outsized attention by all three in their remarks.

Williams is in her sophomore term as a congresswoman representing much of Atlanta, and sits on the House transportation committee. She and Warnock worked closely together to draw funding on the Stitch project, which eight years ago was little more than a twinkle in the eye of AJ Robinson, president of Central Atlanta Progress, a non-profit civic group for downtown businesses which is leading the design process on the Stitch.

“We are truly a model for the world,” Williams said, describing the investments by the Biden administration in the Black community as “unprecedented”.

Warnock has a particularly high political stake in the Stitch. The cap stands to transform the area around Auburn Avenue, famed home of Martin Luther King Jr and Ebenezer Baptist church, where Warnock is now senior pastor. The church is two blocks east of the Connector, which decimated the once-vibrant street after its construction about 60 years ago.

“Let’s be very clear, today is a day of celebration,” Warnock said. “Because at last, we start repairing and revitalizing and reconnecting neighborhoods in the heart of the Black neighborhoods that have been historically torn apart by highway construction … This happens in every community in America.”

  • Tips for tomorrow’s Wordle

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Let’s start by first reminding ourselves of yesterday’s Wordle answer for those new to the game or who don’t play it daily, which was “ CRAFT .” So we can say that the Wordle answer today definitely isn’t that. Now, with that in mind, perhaps take another stab at it using one of these Wordle starting words and circle back if you have no luck.

Hints for today’s Wordle

Still can’t figure it out? We have today’s Wordle answer right here, below. But first, one more thing: Let’s take a look at three hints that could help you find the solution, without giving it away, so there’s no need to feel guilty about keeping your streak alive — you put in some work, after all! Or just keep scrolling for the answer.

Today’s Wordle answer

Today’s Wordle definition

And here’s what it means, according to our good friend ChatGPT :

The term “prune” has several meanings depending on the context:

“Prowl” can be used as both a noun and a verb:

  • Verb (prowl) : To move around quietly and stealthily, especially with predatory intent. This often refers to animals hunting or humans moving stealthily with a purposeful, secretive manner.Example: The tiger prowled through the dense jungle, searching for its next meal.
  • Noun (prowl) : The act of moving about stealthily, especially for predatory purposes. This can also refer to a period or instance of stealthy movement.Example: The cat’s nightly prowl through the neighborhood often unnerved the residents.

In general, “prowl” conveys a sense of secretive, purposeful movement, often associated with hunting or exploring cautiously.

Tips for tomorrow’s Wordle

It might seem like Wordle is all luck, but there are a few good practices you can use to help get as many clues as possible in just a few guesses, making it that much more likely you can figure out the final word before you run out of tries. The most important guess is your first, and the trick is to load up on vowels (A, E, I, O, and U).

Some popular starting words people have had good luck with are “adieu,” “media,” “arise,” and “radio.” Just make sure not to pick a word with double letters, or you’re wasting precious guesses. The aim here is to try to figure out which vowels the mystery word contains, then layer in common consonants and close in from there.

Your second word, assuming that the first one gave you a good jumping-off point, should begin to lean more heavily on common consonants like R, S, and T. More good ones here we’ve seen are “stern,” “irate,” and “atone.” You never want to reuse any letters from a prior round that showed up as gray — you know they aren’t in the word.

Now that’s all solved and the definition is taken care of, and you’re armed with some tips to crush tomorrow’s Wordle, here are some games like Wordle you can try today.

Wordle’s WordleBot has come up with a new opening word that’s supposed to give you the best possible start to your games.

The new recommended word is the result of an upgrade to WordleBot’s algorithm announced by the game’s owner, The New York Times (NYT), on Wednesday, August 17.

Hasbro has announced it is collaborating with The New York Times to create a Wordle: The Party Game, the board game adaptation of the uber-popular mobile word game. The gameplay is the same, but it's being brought to players "in an all new way that's perfect for game night with family and friends," according to a press release.

In this version of Wordle, one player is designated as the Wordle Host in each round and writes down the secret five-letter word. The other players have to compete against each other to guess the word in six tries or less, with the winner being the player that scores the fewest points by the end of the game.

Spotify announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Heardle, the music trivia game version of Wordle.

According to a press release, the music streaming platform said that purchasing Heardle -- the cost of which Spotify declined to disclose -- will help improve the discoverability of songs old and new. In other words, it will help players rediscover their old favorite hits and introduce them to new artists, as well as link them to their music on Spotify whether they guessed the songs correctly or not.
