Illuminate Shines a Light on the Future of Corporate Travel

FCTG Illuminate 2019

From the implementation of AI and technology innovation, to new distribution channels, emerging category trends and socially responsible policies, Illuminate 2019 provided a deep dive into the trends and topics shaping the future of the corporate travel sector.

The event, now in its fourth year, was held on Thursday 12 September in Sydney and is Australia’s largest and most comprehensive corporate travel event. It proved yet again to be a valuable event for education, information and networking, with more than 550 people registered for the day and a total of 24 speakers on stage throughout the various sessions.

The incredible line up of speakers included Virgin Australia CEO Paul Scurrah, international media commentator and digital futurist Chris Riddell, Global Head of Uber for Business Ronnie Gurion and Australian Rugby Legend and business leader John Eales.

The audience consisted of customers of FCTG’s corporate brands Corporate Traveller, FCM Travel Solutions, Stage and Screen Travel Services, cievents, Executive Travel and 4 th  Dimension Business Travel Consulting, and ranged from large corporates, academic, government and entertainment organisations to representatives from SME businesses. They were all kept enthralled by the high calibre of presenters throughout the day, including the highly anticipated NDC panel that had some of the world’s industry experts weigh in on how NDC will shape the future of travel, and the return of FCTG’s Chief Experience Officer John Morhous, whose energetic and inspiring session on artificial intelligence and machine learning was a hit with the audience.

Illuminate lived up to its reputation of being the place to be to hear ground breaking technology and partnerships first, with the announcement of Flight Centre Travel Group’s Australian-Exclusive partnership with Uber for Business and the launch of on-the-spot booking functionality in CT Mobile - a pocket travel assistant available exclusively for customers of FCTG’s corporate brands.

Nick Queale, Corporate Brands General Manager, said the objective of FCTG’s technology and industry events like Illuminate, is to continually improve the end-to-end customer experience.

“FCTG continues to make a significant investment in technology and partnerships that will set our customers up for the future of travel, so it was exciting and interesting to hear about our technology alongside the latest developments from our key hotel, ground and airline suppliers,” said Nick.

“Illuminate 2019 has been a huge success and we’re delighted with the engagement from those who attended.”

Guests also had a unique opportunity to hear emerging travel procurement and category trends first-hand, with panel members from the ANZ Bank, BlueScope, The NRL and the University of Adelaide stepping the audience through the innovative changes they’ve initiated within their procurement programmes.

Accor’s Head of Integration Adrian Williams provided a fascinating view into the future of the hotel industry and how the industry will accommodate the influx of millennials and their unique way of conceiving business travel, and Australia’s leading health company Blackmores were honoured as inaugural ‘ Illuminators’  in recognition of their contribution to the travel procurement category.

At the conclusion of the speaker sessions, guests were treated to the legendary ‘Light up the Night’ after party, where they had the opportunity to network and win incredible travel prizes thanks to the event sponsors.

Flight Centre to bring back corporate travel event ‘Illuminate’ in October

Flight Centre to bring back corporate travel event ‘Illuminate’ in October

Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) has announced that its corporate travel management event, Illuminate, is set to return in just a couple of months’ time.

Based on a ‘Time to Fly’ theme, the event will be hosted by the Australian corporate arms of FCTG (FCM, Corporate Traveller, Stage and Screen and Flight Centre Business Travel), and will capture the importance of doing business in a post-pandemic world.

“After a 12-month hiatus, Australia’s premier corporate travel industry event will really show our path to freedom and light the way forward for the business travel industry at home and abroad,” said FCTG’s managing director for Australia, James Kavanagh.

“While the industry outlook is largely optimistic and road warriors are eager to ramp up their travel for more face-to-face meetings, we know the travel landscape has shifted. It’s time to embrace the new normal in business travel.”

With a deep dive into all the key issues impacting the corporate travel sector, Kavanagh said this year’s content at Illuminate will be crucial for anyone involved in the business of travel.

“Never has it been so important to understand how your travel program needs to evolve to accommodate the post-pandemic world – a world that includes new protocols and precautions at every stage of the traveller journey,” he said.

“We’re leading the way in the corporate travel industry, and we want to give our customers the confidence and arm them with all the information they need to return to travel. That will not just be through us, but some heavy-hitting speakers will also be making these points.

“Vaccinations and borders will be a hot topic for some time, but what we do know is there is a pent-up demand from our customers wanting to connect again – with a genuine need to visit customers and employees high on the priority list – and it’s also critical to winning new business.

“Regardless of what’s happening around us with lockdowns now, we know there is a path to freedom through vaccinations, and we can’t keep cancelling major events – we have the technology and team to forge ahead and lead the recovery in the event and travel space.”

The announcement comes not long after FCM Meetings & Events appointed industry expert Andrew Yell to the role of group travel business leader in Australia.

Meanwhile, sister brand Stage and Screen has been welcoming home more than 300 Aussie athletes from the Tokyo Olympics, having been responsible for the planning and execution of their travel between Australia and Japan.

Elite plundering planet to destruction; richest 1% account for more emissions than poorest 66%

  • 23 November, 2023

The richest 1% of the world's population produced as much carbon pollution in 2019 as the five billion people who made up the poorest two-thirds of humanity, according to a report published by Oxfam ahead of the UN Climate Summit, COP28.

The report, ' Climate Equality: A Planet for the 99%' , is based on research with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). It assesses the consumption emissions of different income groups, highlighting the stark gap between the carbon footprints of the super-rich -whose carbon-hungry lifestyles and investments in polluting industries like fossil fuels are driving global warming- and the rest of the world.

Asia Pacific aviation – ensuring the system is working on time

  • 21 November, 2023

The rapid recovery of passenger traffic during 2022 also saw a spike in operational disruptions globally - leading to queues in airports, delays and cancellations for airlines and disgruntled travellers.

With the Asia Pacific undergoing a slower traffic recovery, these problems have not been as pronounced for much of the region.

However, with supply chains disrupted and labour markets upended, airlines have still struggled to get things right on the operational front.

As traffic continues to build and some markets push beyond pre-pandemic levels, the performance of the regional air travel sector remains under pressure.

Airlines and airports will need to work with the public sector providers to ensure that the system is robust and able to handle both peak volumes and interrupted and irregular operations.

The future of China’s international market – traveller demands and expectations are not the same

  • 16 November, 2023

With China's borders now re-opened to international travel, waves of outbound travel are expected to build in the market.

After almost three years of restricted travel, Chinese travellers are back but their demands and expectations are not the same as before the pandemic.

Chinese travellers have initially opted for 'safe' markets, including Hong Kong, Macau and select regional destinations.

COVID-19 has also accelerated the swing away from large, organised tour groups and towards individual and small group travel with freer itineraries.

This was the topic of a panel discussion at the CAPA Asia Aviation Summit in Kuala Lumpur Brisbane at the start of Nov-2023.

A bright idea for winter travel: the world's best light festivals

May 2, 2019 • 4 min read

corporate traveller illuminate

Photo Taken In Benares, India

In Stockholm, young women wear crowns of glowing candles. In Moscow, futuristic light projections illuminate the Bolshoi Theatre. In Santa Fe, paper lanterns line pedestrian walkways and courtyards. As the days get shorter and darker, cultures across the northern hemisphere incorporate light into their rituals, holidays, and ceremonies.

While some festivals, like winter solstice and Hannukah, are celebrated across boundaries, other traditions, like the Amsterdam Light Festival and Fête des Lumières, are location-specific. Here are some of the best events lighting up the world later this year.

Someone lighting a clay lamp for Diwali in India

The biggest holiday in India , Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. Diwali takes its name from the Sanskrit word deepavali – meaning rows ( avali ) of clay lamps ( deepa ) – a reference to the lights that people set up outside their homes during the five-day festival. The holiday centres around the concept of light triumphing over dark (and, by extension, good over evil), and while it’s Hindu in origin, Diwali is widely celebrated by Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs, too.

Taking place between mid-October and mid-November, the exact dates change each year, with the festival’s third day coinciding with the darkest night of the month on the Hindu calendar. Fireworks and family feasts are always on the agenda, among many other religious and cultural traditions. No matter how dark the night, you won’t lose your way between parties and pyrotechnic displays: oil lanterns, clay lamps and candles light up sidewalks, public parks, and entrances to homes.

A light installation on a canal bridge in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Light Festival

Winter is long and cold in the Netherlands. Luckily, the Amsterdam Light Festival , showcasing light design, art and architecture, doesn’t just last for a few days: the celebrations start at the end of November and last through the last week of January. Each year, the organising committee announces a theme (the 2019 theme was ‘the medium is the message’) and invites artists from across the globe to create and submit relevant works. Ultimately, 30 installations are chosen to illuminate and decorate the city of Amsterdam during the wintry event.

One great way to see the festival’s innovative light design? From the vantage point of the water: the light festival partners with several cruise lines to offer guided boat rides with privileged views of the temporary installations.

One of the eye-catching images projected on to Lyon’s historic buildings for the annual Fête des Lumières

Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights)

Brightening up the city of Lyon for a weekend each December (this year, the dates are set for December 5-8), the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) is a beloved tradition in France. The event dates back to 1852, when bad weather interfered with the plans for a citywide celebration on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Although the official event was postponed, Lyon residents placed lit candles in coloured glasses in their windows, and the city was aglow with candlelight in all the hues of the rainbow. Today, during the festival, Lyonnais still put candles in their windows and balconies, while artists and designers bathe the city’s Renaissance-era facades in colourful light.

A procession taking place during the Feast of Santa Lucia in Stockholm, Sweden

Feast of Santa Lucia

December 13 is an important day in Sweden , Norway , Finland , and some parts of Italy . It’s the Feast Day of Santa Lucia, commemorating the life of one of the first Christian martyrs in history. St Lucia, who was killed by the Romans in 304 CE, is known as the patron saint of sight – the name Lucia derives from the Latin word lux , meaning ‘light’. Today, in Scandinavian countries, each town chooses a young woman as a St Lucia stand-in. Wearing a white dress and a wreath crown with glowing candles, she leads the traditional holiday procession that kicks off the Christmas season.

The facade of the Bolshoi Theatre during Moscow’s Circle of Light Festival

Circle of Light Festival (Moscow, Russia)

During this annual festival at the end of September, the exteriors of some of Moscow’s historic buildings and cultural sites – including Grand Tsaritsyno Palace, Bolshoi Theatre and Unesco-listed Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, become larger-than-life canvases for audiovisual artists and lighting designers. From high-tech firework displays over Grebnoy Channel to multimedia presentations projected onto the cascading fountains at Tsaritsyno Pond, these light-centric celebrations are free and open to the public.

Fun fact: in 2016, the Circle of Light festival earned the Guinness World Record for the largest projected image, with a total surface area measuring 50,458 square metres (543,125 square feet).

Little lanterns lining the streets of Santa Fe, New Mexico

Holiday Luminaria

On Christmas Eve in Santa Fe , the streets close to traffic. As the sun goes down, the city glows with luminaria (also known as farolitos , Spanish for ‘little lanterns’) – lighted votive candles inside paper bags weighed down with sand. The tradition dates back hundreds of years, predating electricity, when New Mexicans built small bonfires to light the way between home and church. During the annual Farolito Walk , on Santa Fe’s Canyon Road, you’ll see the charming homemade lanterns on full display as locals socialise and sip hot chocolate. There are similar events throughout the southwest during the holiday season, including Luminaria Tour in Albuquerque and Light Among the Ruins at the mission ruins outside the village of Jemez Springs.

Niagara Falls illuminated for the Winter Festival of Lights

Winter Festival of Lights

Three million lights illuminate Niagara Falls during the Winter Festival of Lights , an annual event occurring during Canada’s chilliest months. The light installations aren’t limited to the waterfalls: the festival takes place throughout Niagara Parks, featuring a sound and light show at the historic Toronto Power Generating Station, an illuminated flower display at the Floral Showhouse, and spectacular Christmas lights in Queen Victoria Park. Upcoming festival dates are November 16, 2019, through January 12, 2020.
