The costs of programs might differ significantly for local and international students. The only source of truth for current numbers is the university's official website.

Emerald Isle Noles: What Florida State football fans need to know, see in Dublin, Ireland

Portrait of Liam Rooney

Pack your bags and get your passports out, Florida State football is heading to Ireland.

With kickoff against Georgia Tech days away, Seminole fans are beginning to make the over 4,000-mile trip to the Emerald Isle for the week zero matchup with the Yellow Jackets.

Kickoff is noon in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic Saturday at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Many FSU fans are taking the opportunity to explore Dublin and the greater area leading up to the game. So for those who have never been to Ireland before, where should they go?

Here are some places to visit and things to know while in Ireland's capital city.

These tips are brought to you by FSU beat writer and United States and Ireland dual citizen Liam Rooney and the Consul General of Ireland in Miami Sarah Kavanagh , who the Democrat spoke with when she visited Tallahassee in August.

Visit one of the many local museums

There is a host of museums to visit in the Dublin area, with some detailing the history of the country and others taking a look at the greater world and arts.

From Dublina, a look at Viking exploration and medieval Dublin, to the National Museum of Ireland, there is a wide variety of historical museums in the area. On the art side of things, you can visit the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts and History or the National Gallery of Ireland.

Kavanagh said she enjoys the national museums and the close proximity to each other, but outside of that, she suggests some of her other favorite places for history buffs to check out.

"I love history so I would recommend Dublin Castle, the EPIC Museum and Christchurch Cathedral," Kavanagh said. "There’s a charge involved, but it’s worth it."

During Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell's visit to Ireland in March, he took a trip to the EPIC Museum and gave his recommendation on X, formerly Twitter.

Check out the different restaurants, pubs in the area

Food and drinks are a big part of Ireland, with restaurants and pubs lining the streets of Dublin, Seminoles fans will have their pick of where to go.

Walking around and exploring the city will allow the thousands of fans making the trip overseas a chance to experience something different, with Kavanagh suggesting Seminoles fans try her favorite order.

"We have a lot of great restaurants with food from all over the world," Kavanagh said. "Of course, it’s hard to beat a “toasted special” (a toasted sandwich with ham, cheese, onion, tomato) with a side of chips (French fries) in an atmospheric Irish pub."

What will the weather be like in Ireland, what should fans pack?

There will be plenty of changes in climate for fans traveling from Tallahassee to Dublin, with the Irish capital likely to be much cooler than the sweltering 90-degree heat in Florida's capital.

The forecast for the game currently calls for temperatures in the mid-60s with a 40-percent chance of showers.

With a cooler climate, jackets and layers are a must. Kavanagh thinks fans are going to be exploring Dublin regardless of the climate.

"Dublin is a great walking city so I would say always wear comfortable walking shoes and enjoy a wander," Kavanagh said. "I would also suggest layers, a cardigan or hoody that can be removed if the sun beats down, which it sometimes does. Wear sunscreen, that’s a rule for all countries."

Go on tours of different locations in the city

There is plenty to experience in Dublin, and some of the best things to see or visit often can't be listed. However, Kavanagh said there are some fan favorites for those traveling for the game to see.

"People love to visit the breweries and distilleries and the Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery are hugely popular," Kavanagh said.

Take a visit to see the iconic red exterior of the Temple Bar or the many restaurants and shops that line the streets of Dublin. A trip to St. Stephens Green provides travelers a chance to view Ireland's nature and history in the heart of the city.

While the masses will be heading to the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, taking a tour of the stadium earlier in the week could be an exciting introduction.

A tour of Croke Park, the stadium for Ireland's games of Gaelic football and hurling, will also give fans a look at the unique sports of the country.

Stonehenge Altar Stone came from Scotland, not Wales

14 August 2024

The largest “bluestone” at the heart of Stonehenge came from northern Scotland, not Wales, according to new research.

Stones from Stonehenge, some standing some fallen, with one sticking out of the ground

Published in the journal Nature , the study analysed the age and chemistry of minerals from fragments of the Altar Stone.

The findings show a remarkable similarity between the Old Red Sandstone of the Orcadian Basin in northeast Scotland and the Stonehenge Altar Stone.

Construction at Stonehenge began 5,000 years ago, with changes and additions over the next two millennia.

Although it is unclear when the Altar Stone arrived at Stonehenge, it may have been placed within the world-renowned central horseshoe of stones during the second construction phase at around 2620 – 2480 BC.

For the past hundred years, the iconic six-tonne Altar Stone at the heart of the ancient site was believed to have come from Wales.

The majority of Stonehenge’s world-renowned ‘bluestones’ came from the Preseli Hills area in west Wales and are believed to have been the first stones erected at the Wiltshire site.

The Altar Stone, a sandstone, has traditionally been grouped with these other, smaller, igneous bluestones.

However, the Altar Stone’s origins had remained an open question, until now.

According to the new research involving scientists at Aberystwyth University, UCL, Curtin University and the University of Adelaide, both the chemical composition and the ages of mineral grains in the sandstone indicate it is very likely to have come from northeast Scotland.

The scientists used their analysis of the ages of the mineral grains to create a ‘fingerprint’ of the source of those grains. They matched ages found in rocks of the Orcadian Basin found in the north-east of Scotland, and are completely different from Welsh-sourced stones.

Co-author Professor Richard Bevins from Aberystwyth University said: “These findings are truly remarkable - they overturn what had been thought for the past century. We have succeeded in working out, if you like, the age and chemical fingerprints of perhaps one of the most famous of stones in the world-renowned ancient monument.

“It’s thrilling to know that our chemical analysis and dating work has finally unlocked this great mystery. We can now say that this iconic rock is Scottish and not Welsh. Although we can say that much, and confidently – the hunt will still very much be on to pin down where exactly in the north-east of Scotland the Altar Stone came from.”

The new discovery implies that one of the most famous stones in the world was moved much further than had been believed - at least 700 km (435 miles).

Lead author Anthony Clarke at Curtin University said: “Considering the technological constraints of the Neolithic, our findings raise fascinating questions about how such massive stone was able to be transported over the vast distance implied. Given major overland barriers en route from north-east Scotland to Salisbury Plain, marine transport is one feasible option.”

Co-author Dr Robert Ixer (UCL Institute of Archaeology) said: “This is a genuinely shocking result, but if plate tectonics and atomic physics are correct, then the Altar Stone is Scottish. The work prompts two important questions: why and exactly how was the Altar Stone transported from the very north of Scotland, a distance of more than 700 kilometres, to Stonehenge?”

While the research does not provide direct evidence about how the Altar Stone got to its world-famous location in Wiltshire, the revelation that it travelled so far will raise questions about its journey given the limits of human technology during Neolithic times.

Co-author Professor Nick Pearce from Aberystwyth University said: “This stone has travelled an awful long way – at least 700 km - and this is the longest recorded journey for any stone used in a monument at that period. The distance travelled is astonishing for the time. While the purpose of our new, empirical research was not to answer the question of how it got there, there are obvious physical barriers to transporting by land, but a daunting journey if going by sea. There’s no doubt that this Scottish source shows a high level of societal organisation in the British Isles during the period. These findings will have huge ramifications for understanding communities in Neolithic times, their levels of connectivity and their transport systems.

"Hopefully, people will now start to look at the Altar Stone in a slightly different context in terms of how and when it got to Stonehenge, and where it came from. I am sure this will lead to some new thinking about the development of Stonehenge and its links to the rest of Neolithic Britain.”

The new research builds on findings published by Aberystwyth University and UCL researchers last year in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports that cast doubt on the Altar Stone’s Welsh origins, and suggested that it should not be classified as a bluestone.

This study was supported by a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship, Salisbury Museum and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales and funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project. It was a collaboration between Aberystwyth University, Curtin University, the University of Adelaide, and UCL.

Anonymous college football coaches spoke with ESPN about the Tennessee Volunteers' recent success on the recruiting trail.

Providence Day School offensive tackle David Sanders Jr. made history when he chose the Tennessee Volunteers over Georgia, Nebraska, and Ohio State on Saturday. He's the highest-ranked offensive lineman to commit to the University of Tennessee in the rankings era and vaulted their 2025 recruiting class to the No. 6 national rank .

While landing Sanders was the perfect end to a run of 15 commitments this summer, their efforts in other places didn't go unnoticed. "They seem to have a really good plan and process," an SEC rival told ESPN. It seems organized. It seems targeted." Tennessee has ensured that everyone, from the coaches to the collective, players, and administration, understands their long-term goals and what they need to accomplish them.

"They’ve got a good thing going," another staff member, this one from the Big Ten staff, said. “You feel them for sure. They’ve got the money to kind of back up the production they’ve had on offense the last few years. They’re having a great cycle."
