Adam Sandler during the 24th Annual Mark Twain Prize For American Humor

Chris Tucker

Brett goldstein, eric andré, eddie izzard, adam sandler, jerry seinfeld and jim gaffigan, tina fey and amy poehler, chelsea handler, john mulaney and pete davidson/jon stewart.

Coming soon to a theater near you: some of the funniest comedians working today. A number of major stars are heading on comedy tours this fall, including one who's doing so for the first time in years and another who's touring for the first time period. These are the comedy tours you won’t want to miss in the coming months.

Is 2023 the year of the Tuckeraissance? After appearing in his first movie in years (Ben Affleck's "Air"), Chris Tucker announced what Live Nation noted was the comic’s first major North American tour in over a decade. His "The Legend Tour" is heading to 30 cities this fall and recently kicked off in Charleston, South Carolina. "I started my career doing stand-up in comedy clubs and it's stand-up comedy that prepared me for all of my movie roles," Tucker said. "I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots." The tour will run through Jan. 12.

He's here, he's there, he's everywhere, including a theater near you this fall. Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso" star Brett Goldstein is embarking on his very first stand-up tour . The actor's "The Second Best Night of Your Life Tour" will be in Denver on Oct. 5 before moving to Boston, Minneapolis, and more cities into December. Place your bets on how many words he gets out before dropping his first F-bomb.

You're sure to have a good trip to see Eric André on tour this fall. The star of "The Eric Andre Show" is traveling the country on his "Eric André Explosion Tour," which recently kicked off in Los Angeles. He has a ton of upcoming dates scheduled, including in Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, and Detroit. "Bring your ranch, your nightmares, and all your friends," the comedian said .

You can catch the popular British comedian Eddie Izzard on her " Remix Tour ," which has shows scheduled throughout the fall in the U.S. and heads to the U.K. in November. "I will be remixing the stand-up that I like the most from the first 35 years of my career," Izzard explained .

Make it a very Hubie Halloween season with Adam Sandler. The comedian recently announced a fall tour he’s calling the "I Missed You Tour," which will stop by 25 cities. "Let's have some fun," he posted on Instagram . He's kicking off the tour on Oct. 12 in Vancouver before heading to Seattle, Portland, Nampa, Spokane, and more locations around the country into December. Get ready for more than 20 crazy nights.

Sometimes two comedians are better than one, so Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan are heading on tour together. "Jim and I met doing 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' and have been talking about doing this for years," Seinfeld said . "We finally made the schedules work out." Gaffigan, meanwhile, joked he's "so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of." After November shows in San Francisco and Inglewood, the pair will also head to Chicago and St. Louis.

Speaking of comedy duos, you can't get much better than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who announced their first-ever comedy tour together in February. Their "Restless Leg Tour" is continuing into the fall with shows scheduled for Cleveland, Denver, Austin, and more cities into December.

Have you seen Chelsea lately? If not, check out the schedule for her ongoing " Little Big Bitch Tour ," which has shows set throughout the fall in New York, California, and plenty of cities in between.

A certain tall child is also headed on tour this fall with some good friends. John Mulaney will be performing shows with his friend Pete Davidson, who has his own solo tour dates scheduled as well, in October and November. But for some shows, Mulaney’s “John & Pete” show will be “Jon & John,” as Mulaney has a few performances scheduled with former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart in New York and California. How’s that for a deal: two Jo(h)ns for the price of one?

Ain't Too Proud

It was a sound that would change music history. Ain't Too Proud is the electrifying new musical that tells the story of The Temptations from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their signature dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, everybody knows the Temptations' hits, but Ain't Too Proud brings the rest of the rocky history to life; how the founding members met, the unbelievable heights that they hit, and how personal and political conflicts threatened to tear the group apart as the country fell into civil unrest. With a book by Dominique Morisseau , choreography by Sergio Trujillo , and direction by Des McAnuff , this musical tells the thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal, featuring the toe-tapping hits hits like "My Girl," "Just My Imagination," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and many more.

From Miller to Lakefront, here are 5 brewery tours to check out in Milwaukee

Portrait of Jordyn Noennig

Milwaukee is known as Brew City for a reason. Once home to some of the country’s largest breweries — Pabst, Miller, Schlitz and Blatz — today the city builds on that legacy with a burgeoning craft beer scene.

Many breweries in the city offer a chance to get a closer look at their history and brewing process through brewery tours.

We set out to go on some of Milwaukee’s best known tours and see what makes them great.

For this list we considered breweries that hold weekly public tours. Many smaller breweries in Milwaukee host tours a few times a year, or allow groups to set up private tours.

From the best brewery tours for families (yes, families, because this is Wisconsin) to where you can learn the most about beer, here are five brewery tours to check out in Milwaukee.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Best for comedy: Lakefront Brewery

Our tour guide Sergio "Serg" Sepulveda provided brewery information and well-delivered jokes on our Lakefront Brewery tour, as is the norm for this spot. Every Lakefront Brewery tour I've been on has a guide who easily pulls laughs from the crowd and keeps everyone engaged.

The tour started in a private taproom where attendees grabbed a beer, one of four 6-ounce pours that were included on the tour, delivered via beer token. Serg gave a history lesson on brewing from its origins in Mesopotamia to when Lakefront's co-owner, Jim Klisch, made his first batch of Riverwest Stein. Serg followed that with the history of Lakefront, one of Milwaukee’s largest craft breweries.

Weekend tours go through the production facility and lead to the historic Bernie Brewer's chalet that was in the Brewers' old home, Milwaukee County Stadium. Since we were on a weekday tour, it skipped that portion and went straight to the brewery's new canning area.

While canning was a worthwhile shift from bottling for the brewery — cans are infinitely recyclable and are helping the brewery boost shipping efficiency by 50%, cutting down on carbon emissions — it did take away a cherished "Laverne and Shirley" bit from the tour. Previously, tour guides turned on the bottling line and would pick an attendee who would put a glove on a bottle as it moved down the line, like in the show's opening credits.

While the guide still played the show's theme song and got our group to sing and dance along, the bit no longer includes the glove part because the canning line does not turn on as fast. Sometimes the tour attendee who most enthusiastically sings and dances along gets an extra beer token.

The tour did still include the bung hole bit. Go on one yourself to find out what that is all about.

  • Cost: $12 on weekdays, $15 on weekends; advance online purchase required; age 21 and older only unless supervised by a parent or legal guardian
  • Hours: Starts on the hour noon to 3 p.m. Sunday and 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on the half hour noon to 7 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday
  • What you get: Four 6-ounce pours, Lakefront pint glass or key chain, and a coupon for a free Lakefront beer to be used at nearby bars within three days
  • Accessibility: The tour includes stairs, but there are ramps into the tour room and to the lower level for accessibility.
  • Location: 1872 N. Commerce St.

Best mix of past and present: Miller Brewery Tour

I got to the Miller Brewery tour a little before 10:30 a.m., with the next available tour at 11 a.m. They are offered first-come, first-served on every half hour from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.

While waiting, I checked out the connected gift shop and grabbed a complimentary bag of pretzels. I also learned about the history of the brewery from 1855 to today from a timeline that spans two full walls in the waiting area.

The tour started with the guides handing out a taster of Miller Lite while sharing information about the brewery in a theater room. It then moved outside for a three-block walk through the W. State St. campus to the brewing facility.

The only optional part of the tour was to climb 56 steps to view the tanks in the brewing facility where Molson Coors, Miller's parent company, makes beer for a 10-state region. The modern facility is across the street from the original brewhouse, visible from outside the brewing facility or after climbing the steps. The building was not part of the tour.

To cool off after walking in the brewing facility, which was hot in the upper level, the tour went underground to the historic caves that were created in the 1800s and sealed off in 1906. Frederick C. Miller, grandson of Miller founder Frederick J. Miller, reopened the caves in 1953, and they have been part of the tour ever since.

The caves were a unique view into how brewing was possible before electrical refrigeration, with tools that would have been used by brewers in the past.

The tour then went to a historical inn on campus that once sold Miller beer and had rooms for overnight guests; today it's used mostly for events. Fredrick C. Miller imported stained glass windows from Germany along with antique steins for the inn that are still there. It's also home to letters written by Fredrick J. Miller and a diorama of the current campus.

The tour wrapped up with stops at the bottling facility where 600,000 items are bottled daily and the warehouse where about 1 million cans and bottles of product are stored.

The tour ended at an outdoor beer garden where visitors could try various Molson Coors products for free.

  • Cost: $10; free for ages 20 and under (no beer samples)
  • Hours: Walk-ins only with limited space, running on the half hour from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday
  • What you get: Four 4-ounce pours and a Miller glass
  • Accessibility: The tour includes stairs, but accessible tours are available by calling (414) 931-3552 at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Location: 4251 W. State St.

5 breweries that made Milwaukee famous: Miller, Schlitz, Pabst, Gettelman and Blatz

Best for history: The Best Place at Pabst Brewing

This historic brewery doesn't actually brew in Milwaukee anymore, but the site where Pabst Brewery was founded is still worth checking out. Beer enthusiasts who take multiple tours on this list will also see Pabst’s influence in almost every one.

The tour stared in the historic brewing complex's Blue Ribbon Hall with a presentation on the history of the brewery and the option to enjoy a pint of Pabst or Schlitz, which is included in the ticket price.

The tour guide talked about how Pabst started as Jacob Best Brewery in 1844. Their original building on a historic plank road, today’s State Street, was sold to Fredrick J. Miller who started Miller Brewing.

The history lesson continued with a tour guide explaining how the brewery moved to the current campus, and how Captain Fredrick Pabst took over and grew the brewery to be the largest lager brewery in the world at one time.

From the main floor of the hall the tour moved to the balcony, while passing a section of the building that is being refurbished. Paystubs and letters on the wall on the way up showed the brewery's more recent history before it left Milwaukee in 1996.

The tour was peppered with interesting facts about the nearly 170-year-old brewery, like how Pabst did not want his name on the beer, and that the employee's union successfully bargained to get a free pint of beer per shift.

Next the tour moved to the Great Hall, which is not often open to the public but is popular as a wedding and event space.

It has stained glass, ornate wood finishes and Fredrick Pabst's original office. Below that is a speakeasy with a jail cell. According to our tour guide, it was for Pabst employees who may have had more than their single free beer during their shift and became drunk and unruly.

The tour then passed the courtyard which has a statue of King Gambrinus, the patron saint of beer, and ended in the guest center that has German saying along its walls.

  • Cost: $14 for adults, $12 for students, military and seniors (age 60 and older); free for kids 13 and under
  • Hours: On the hour at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Sunday; noon through 4 p.m. Friday; 12, 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday
  • What is included: A pint of Pabst or Schlitz beer or soda, with $4 refills
  • Accessibility : The tour includes stairs with elevators available for those who need assistance.
  • Location: 917 W. Juneau Ave.

Best for learning about brewing: Pilot Project

This new Milwaukee brewery tour might not be on many people's radars yet. My co-worker and I went on a Friday at 6 p.m. and were the only ones on the tour. Regardless, our guide gave an informative and entertaining tour.

Chicago-based Pilot Project is new to Milwaukee after they moved into the former Milwaukee Brewing Company space in late 2022 . They are a brewery incubator, meaning they help start-up breweries get to market, assisting them with supplies, marketing, canning and more.

I'm not sure if it was because there were only two of us, or because they don’t push a singular brand, but I learned the most about brewing on this tour.

The tour started at the back bar where we could sample one of the five breweries that are currently their partners. We then moved to the balcony of the back space for a slideshow of their current partners and more insight into their diverse lineup.

Next, the tour moved to the tanks where we got an up-close view of the hot water tanks used to make beer, including a peek into the mash tuns where ingredients are brewed.

From there we moved to the fermenting tanks where we got a better view of the warehouse and brewing equipment.

One interesting artifact hanging there is a large neon Pabst Brewery sign that was found in the building. Pilot Project's space was the last building Pabst Brewery constructed before they left in 1996. The large sign was once used at the Pabst-sponsored stage at Summerfest.

The tour then went through the canning facility and ended in cold storage where beer is stored along with a variety of supplies. There the tour guide spoke more about those supplies and the different varieties of yeast, hops and malts that go into making beers.

  • Cost: $18, for ages 21 and up only
  • Hours: 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday; 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday
  • What's included: Five 5-ounce pours and tasting glass
  • Accessibility : The tour includes stairs, with elevators available for those who need assistance.
  • Location: 1128 N. Ninth St.

Best for families: Sprecher Brewing

Sprecher Brewing is popular not only for its local brews, but also its non-alcoholic root beer and cream ale. While there are limits on the beers included in the tour, there is unlimited soda for all. Children on our tour excitedly cycled through the new sodas on tap at the bar. They even had flights of soda, like ones that are usually used for beer.

The beers and sodas were poured in the main hall where tour-goers waited.

The tour started with the guide giving a history of the brewery as it moved into a hallway with photos and trophies from the brewery's various awards. Randy Sprecher opened the brewery in 1985 after being a brewing operator at Pabst.

The guide explained how Sprecher was hesitant to get into soda production, which began with root beer in 1989. It was a good business move as root beer alone makes up 75% of their sales and beer only 10%.

The tour then went through the production facility. Our tour was on Thursday, which is the only day the tour goes through the facility while it is operating. Because of the loud machinery, it was sometimes hard to hear the tour guide. It was interesting, though, to see brewing in production and people moving ingredients from trucks to tanks.

The tour then returned to the main hall where people could resume drinking while learning about the bottling process. There was also the option to walk single-file into the canning facility to get a more up-close view, before returning the main hall to enjoy the rest of the free beer and soda.

New Zealand’s Lydia Ko is Gold Medalist, LPGA Hall of Famer at Long Last

Lydia Ko

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France – Lydia Ko couldn’t hold back the tears when her national anthem began to play. After all the close calls and near misses and bad breaks, she had finally become a gold medalist and earned her place in the LPGA Hall of Fame.

At long last.

“It would be a hell of a way to do it,” said Ko when asked what it would mean to secure a spot in one of sport’s most exclusive Halls of Fame by winning a gold medal on Saturday at the Olympic women’s golf competition. Little did she know that come the end of the final round, that premonition would have become reality, a sweet, sweet dream finally realized for the 27-year-old superstar.

“I repeat those words,” Ko said of becoming a Hall of Famer. “It's a hell of a way to do it. You say those kind of things, and until it happens, it's not really factual. For it to have happened here at the Olympics, unreal. I do feel like I'm a mythical character in a fairytale. It really couldn't have gotten any better than I could have imagined, and I've had so many grateful things that happened in my career so far, and this really tops it. I couldn't have asked for anything more, to be honest.”

Early in the week, it wasn’t immediately apparent that the New Zealander would wind up in this position. She kicked off her bid for the medal trifecta with a quiet, even-par 72, making up some ground on Thursday with a 5-under 67 to sit three back of the lead with 36 holes to play.

A Friday 68 saw Ko share the top of the leaderboard with Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux through three rounds, and when Saturday’s final round got underway, Ko hung tough and held steady as her competitors ran one after one into the buzzsaw that is Le Golf National, with not even a double bogey on the par-4 13th hole derailing her gold medal hopes.

She came to the last with a one-shot lead over eventual silver medalist Esther Henseleit of Germany at 9-under, and like the 20-time LPGA Tour winner has done so many other times before, she calmly found the fairway, laid up, knocked a sand wedge to 7 feet and drained the birdie putt. But this time, it meant so much more.

“Being tied for the lead going into today, I knew that the next 18 holes were going to be some of the most important 18 holes of my life,” Ko said. “One of the things that I had said earlier in the week was I don't know if there is another Olympics for me, and I will say, this is my last Olympics. I think that was at the back of my mind. I didn't want to publicly tell anyone because I knew that being in this kind of position, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“I kept telling myself, I get to write my own ending and that Simone Biles had said (that) and I had heard in her documentary. I kept telling myself that, and I wanted to be the one who was going to control my fate and the ending to this week. To have ended this way, it's honestly a dream come true.”

Ko took the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and claimed bronze after losing in a playoff to silver medalist Mone Inami of Japan at Tokyo 2020, always just a few shots here or a missed putt there from finding the top spot on the Olympic podium. Her quest for gold was something that had continued to propel Ko in her professional golf career, and now that she can finally call herself an Olympic champion, there’s another achievement to add to her laundry list of accomplishments.

The LPGA Hall of Fame didn’t feel within reach for Ko until she won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in January to earn the 26th of 27 total points she needed for automatic qualification. She nearly got the job done the very next week at the LPGA Drive On Championship, losing in a playoff to Nelly Korda at Bradenton Country Club, a win that Ko was “gutted” by as she knew it would take another monumental effort to win for a 21st time on the LPGA Tour.

Ko then lost her way a bit, finding herself oh-so-close to another victory on numerous occasions, but always coming up just a touch short. The doubts that had plagued her at different points throughout her career began to creep in once again.

Would she get that 27th point? Was the Hall of Fame in the cards? Would she qualify? Could she? Was time running out?

Paul Cormack, Ko’s caddie, knew his player’s goals when he picked up her bag at last year’s CPKC Women’s Open. After seeing the Hall of Fame pressure weigh on her throughout the latter half of the 2023 season and the first portion of this year, Ko seemed a little bit different this week, much calmer about it than she had previously appeared.

“(Lydia) very relaxed all week, very focused,” said Cormack. “The big thing was the Hall of Fame, but then I knew that with the Olympics coming up, there was gold to complete the set. She was just very relaxed and very focused (this week). That’s when she plays her best golf.”

With a whirlwind of Hall-of-Fame and medal-trifecta fanfare swirling around her, Ko kept her cool in the eye of the storm, and to the victor go the spoils, rewards that are twofold for the now the only three-time medalist in the history of Olympic golf.

And while she answered many of the questions she has been asked with her triumph on Saturday, there’s a new one that will be on everyone’s lips in every press conference and interview she does from now until the end of the season: When will she retire?

“I know I'm playing the Scottish Open next week and the (AIG Women’s) Open the week after. There's still so much golf to be played this season,” Ko said. “I have great days and I'm like, ‘I want to play as long as I can,’ and then I have days where I wake up with a sore low back, and I'm like, ‘I don't think I can make it anymore.’

“I don't think there is a specific date, and now that I've got in the Hall of Fame, I don't know if that affects anything. Golf has given me so much, and I know that my ending is sooner than when it first started. So, I wanted to really enjoy it, and while I am competitively playing, I want to play the best golf I can. I think this takes a little bit of weight off my shoulders.”

But that eventuality isn’t on Ko’s mind right now. That’s a tomorrow, next week, next month Lydia problem.

For now, it’s time to soak in this gold-medal moment and celebrate her Hall of Fame qualification with those who love her most.

She might even dry her tears with the ribbon of her gold medal.

Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees cancel 2024 U.S. tour

Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel performing on stage

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees have called off a U.S. tour that was set to begin Friday.

Concert dates listed on Ticketmaster were updated Tuesday to say they’d been canceled, while show listings on promoter Live Nation’s website informed ticket holders that they’d soon be refunded. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Hill suggested that low ticket sales were to blame.

Billed as The Celebration Continues: The Miseducation Anniversary Tour, the road show was supposed to feature Hill and her Fugees bandmates Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel performing music from the Fugees’ seven-times-platinum 1996 album, “The Score,” and from Hill’s Grammy-winning 1998 solo debut, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” It was scheduled to kick off Friday in Tampa, Fla., and run through mid-September, with a Sept. 17 stop at the Hollywood Bowl, where Hill brought a 20th-anniversary tour based on “Miseducation” in 2018. The cancellation was reported earlier by Variety. European dates on the books for October and November were still active on Ticketmaster’s site.

After not performing together for 15 years, the Fugees — known for expanding the role of melody and live instrumentation in hip-hop with hits like “Ready or Not” and their smash rendition of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly With His Song” — announced a reunion tour in 2021 but played only a single date before canceling the tour as a result of what the group said were pandemic-related difficulties. Hill and the Fugees hit the road again in late 2023 only to end up pulling out of concert dates a second time, with Hill citing “ serious vocal strain .”

Hill referred to that injury — and the subsequent media coverage of the tour’s cancellation — on Instagram on Wednesday, writing that “some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the [upcoming] tour. The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.”

Before she called off the 2023 tour, Hill made news with a performance at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena, where she gave a viral six-minute speech about her reputation for starting shows late (“Y’all lucky I make it on this … stage every night,” she told the audience) and what she characterized as her mistreatment by the record industry.

In Wednesday’s Instagram post, Hill wrote, “Performing for my fans, is a profound exchange of emotion and energy that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love for music. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.

“Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art, but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us.”

She added that she looked forward to her and the Fugees’ upcoming European dates and told fans in North America that “when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force.”

Joe Rogan’s Live Comedy Special Lets Netflix Have It Both Ways

Joe Rogan

T he announcement, last month, of Joe Rogan ’s live Netflix special felt strangely inevitable. Airing on Aug. 3 at 10pm ET, Joe Rogan: Burn Your Boats will be the first stand-up special in six years from the comedian who is now best known for his rambling interview podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience . Massively popular, chronically controversial , and adored by a huge audience that has remained loyal even as he drew criticism for spreading COVID-19 misinformation and using racial slurs , Rogan is just the kind of voice Netflix loves to elevate. And its decision to stream his set in real time illustrates why Netflix is going all-in on live comedy—a gimmick that offers an ideal mix of appointment-viewing intrigue and, for a platform that has faced scrutiny for the content of its stand-up specials, plausible deniability.

As subscribers have surely noticed, Netflix has been making a big push into live programming. “We believe that live, eventized cultural moments… will be a real value add for existing and future members,” the company told shareholders in this year’s first quarterly report . Its Q2 letter emphasized the success of The Roast of Tom Brady , which aired live from L.A.’s Netflix Is a Joke Fest in May and attracted a 22.6 million viewers according to Netflix, making it the platform's most-watched live broadcast ever. (In linear-TV terms, it wasn't exactly the Super Bowl, which attracted about 124 million viewers in 2024. The roast did, however, edge out this year's Oscars, watched live by an audience of just 19.5 million .) According to Netflix, the roast “showed the power of eventized programming—and Netflix’s ability to deliver these big, buzzy live moments for our members.” The letter noted the potential of Rogan’s special, along with upcoming live broadcasts, including a Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match in November and a pair of Christmas Day NFL games, to build on the momentum generated by the Brady roast. On his entertainment-industry podcast The Town , Puck’s Matt Belloni called Netflix’s live slate for the second half of 2024 “a carnival freakshow,” with the platform “really going lowbrow for some of these ad dollars” generated by subscribers to its newish, cheaper, ad-supported tier.

Netflix Is A Joke Festival: G.R.O.A.T The Greatest Roast Of All Time - Tom Brady

The live-programming pivot might seem counterintuitive, given that it was Netflix that pioneered the binge model of TV consumption. But, more than a decade after the service started making original content, it makes as much sense as any other strategy. Streaming is, after all, in the midst of a chaos era marked by companies’ dramatic departures from conventional wisdom about how to build a sustainable subscription business—including the assumption that people would rather pay a premium fee than watch ads. And one of few advantages many of its competitors have over Netflix is their live sports or news coverage. Sure, Netflix can capitalize on the Olympics with a Simone Biles docuseries . It can run Burn Your Boats as live counter-programming. But it probably can’t hold fans’ attention for the same amount of time they are likely to spend watching gymnastics (among other sports) on Peacock, NBC, and other NBCUniversal networks during the Paris Games.

As Netflix dabbles in expensive licensing deals with everyone from the NFL to the WWE , comedy has, as Fast Company recently noted , become a relatively affordable, low-stakes “warm-up for live sports”—proof of execution the platform surely needs after the high-profile failure of a live Love Is Blind reunion in 2023. This year’s Netflix Is a Joke Fest was an effective reset for the strategy, offering the platform’s most prolific, smoothly executed, slate of live programming to date, including the delightful six-episode talk show John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A. and Katt Williams’ stand-up special Woke Foke along with The Roast of Tom Brady . What each of these events shared was at least one big name (the roast featured Ben Affleck, Kim Kardashian, and host Kevin Hart, while Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, and Sarah Silverman appeared on Mulaney’s show) and an opportunity to catch exciting, unscripted or at least uncensored moments.

Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats. CR: Troy Conrad/Netflix

It’s a model Netflix pioneered with its first live stand-up special, 2023’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage —a big hit that catered to viewers eager to see the A-list comic address one of the most shocking moments in live-TV history: the Oscars telecast where Will Smith slapped Rock , onstage, for making fun of Jada Pinkett-Smith. Some of the Netflix Is a Joke broadcasts delivered on similar expectations of real-time messiness. Nikki Glaser’s deft, vicious set at the Brady roast (“It’s hard to walk away from something that’s not your pregnant girlfriend”) went viral, and for good reason, even though most of the event’s three-hour runtime was devoted to drunk dudes cracking variations on the same dumb joke (people like to call Brady gay).

But Williams’ special felt like a bait-and-switch. Like Selective Outrage , Joe Rogan’s 2016 Netflix special Triggered , and so many other titles in this age of edgelord comedy, Woke Foke was packaged as a send-up of liberal pieties. It wasn’t, unless you consider the opinions that America is great, racists are stupid, and Ron DeSantis is crazy to be politically incorrect. Nor did Williams deliver on the reasonable expectation that he’d have more truth bombs to drop, after a filter-free interview on the podcast Club Shay Shay , in January, whose brutal honesty about rivals like Hart, Steve Harvey, and Cedric the Entertainer broke the internet . “Everyone knows I’ll tell,” Williams boasted at the beginning of Woke Foke . But he didn’t, not really.

Katt Williams at Katt Williams: Woke Foke for Netflix is a Joke Festival at the Youtube Theater on Saturday, May 4, 2024 in Inglewood, CA. Cr. Clifton Prescod/Netflix © 2024

Of course, for a platform looking to attract as many drama-loving eyeballs as possible, the beauty of making people watch live is that you can dangle bombshells that will never detonate, without having to worry about reviews or word of mouth deflating anticipation. Will Rogan’s much-anticipated special turn out to be as tame as Williams’ was? It’s possible. But it seems more likely that Netflix is going live with Rogan for a savvier reason; I think the company wants to have its naughty, what-will-he-say-next star comic and deflect responsibility for any jokes that cross a line, too. What better way to do that than to simply air his performance as it’s happening, so that, for example, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos can credibly claim that he first heard an offensive Rogan joke at the same time as whoever is complaining about it on social media?

Comedy has proven to be a double-edged sword for Netflix. The platform benefits from the combination of low cost, popularity, and cultural relevance that stand-up provides. But it has also faced some very embarrassing—not to mention potentially costly —pushback to comedy that takes aim at vulnerable communities. The backlash against Dave Chappelle’s 2021 special The Closer , a traditional taped set that fixates on Chappelle’s antagonism of the trans community, included not just LGBTQ organizations, but also Netflix staff, who staged a walkout . Sarandos’ invocation of Hannah Gadsby—the queer, nonbinary comic whose breakthrough Netflix special Nanette questioned the morality of stand-up—as proof that the company also supports LGBTQ comedians backfired spectacularly. “You didn’t pay me nearly enough to deal with the real world consequences of hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted,” Gadsby shot back via Instagram . “F-ck you and your amoral algorithm cult.” (In a sign of Netflix’s monolithic influence in comedy, Gadsby continues to work with the platform.) And an employee was fired for leaking “commercially sensitive information” about The Closer to the media—information that presumably would not have been available to them had the special premiered live.

Dave Chappelle: The Closer. c. Mathieu Bitton

With that debacle behind it, you can imagine why Netflix might have wanted to release Chappelle’s next proper stand-up special, The Dreamer , this past New Year’s Eve—traditionally a big night for live TV, but one when both headline-seeking entertainment reporters and the young lefties who are among Chappelle’s most vocal detractors were likely to be away from their screens. It had dropped the similarly outrage-baiting comedian Ricky Gervais’ Armageddon —the follow-up to 2022’s SuperNature , another special called out for transphobic jokes —less than a week earlier, on a day when it was even less liable to draw criticism: Christmas. Fans knew it was coming, in part, because Netflix promoted it with a teaser that featured an ableist slur , which Gervais later framed as giving voice to “an idiot who would say that,” that caused predictable controversy. (Last year also brought pre-recorded Netflix specials from rising shock comics Matt Rife and Shane Gillis , though Rife's Natural Selection was a bit of a surprise hit and Gillis' Beautiful Dogs was relatively tame, in keeping with his practice of saving the racial slurs and caricatures for his paywalled podcasts. But it's worth noting that Netflix didn't announce its acquisition of Gillis' scripted comedy series Tires until just after he'd proved his mainstream palatability in an SNL hosting gig.)

A live Joe Rogan special takes this strategy of avoiding accountability further. Netflix isn’t just dodging advance criticism of Burn Your Boats ; it’s also ducking responsibility for anything Rogan says during the broadcast that might make subscribers (or its own employees) mad. And when it comes to critics of its often-reactionary taste within the comedy world, the knowledge that “woke” comedians like Gadsby stuck with the company through the Chappelle affair suggests that Netflix has so thoroughly consolidated its power in the medium, there’s little reason to believe dissenters would jump ship over an offensive live special. The same might well be true of subscribers, especially the ones who love stand-up, who may not love every voice Netflix is platforming, but who have come to see the service as a necessary evil—no different, or less ethically fraught, from an Amazon Prime membership or a DoorDash habit.

Taken together with the mandate to build the platform’s live-event business—as well as a crucial invulnerability to both the FCC fines and the in-house standards and practices censors that limit what can be said on a controversy-chasing live broadcast comedy series like SNL —the likely result of Burn Your Boats is a diabolically savvy, win-win publicity stunt that can be replicated again and again, critics be damned. By the time the backlash to Rogan’s special arrives, Netflix will already have gotten away with it.
