JOURNEY is continuing to promote its latest album, "Freedom" , which was released in July via BMG . The LP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Current Rock chart.

The members of JOURNEY celebrated the album's release by kicking off a residency featuring special symphony orchestra performances at the new, state-of-the-art Resorts World Casino in Las Vegas.

As JOURNEY 's legend continues to grow larger and their touring gets bigger, "Freedom" is the band’s first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011's "Eclipse" , and in addition to Schon , along with longtime keyboard player and primary lyricist Cain and Pineda , one more member was recruited for the LP — bassist extraordinaire Randy Jackson , who had played on JOURNEY 's 1986 album "Raised On Radio" .

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, JOURNEY has 25 gold and platinum albums, with total sales adding up to over 100 million albums worldwide, earning the band two Diamond Awards with a third on the way for the "Frontiers" album. JOURNEY has also surpassed one billion streams on Spotify .

About JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame . Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube .

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

The Linda Lindas grow up (but not too fast) while reaching stadium-level status

Four teenage girls posing in front of a big red semi-truck

fp-dropcap-lindas-o.png

On one of the first nights of the Linda Lindas’ current tour opening stadiums for Green Day, the very young L.A. punk band ransacked their elders’ backstage suite.

“We TP’ed their dressing room,” bassist Eloise Wong boasted. “We replaced the faces on all their signs backstage with the Linda Lindas’ cat faces. We put whoopee cushions on Tré [Cool’s] drum throne. They came up to us with their arms crossed, this stern look on their faces, and Tré was like, ‘Looks like someone had a case of the f— arounds this morning.’”

“We were told that we should start small,” said guitarist Lucia de la Garza, laughing about their incipient prank war. “Because they’d come back at us a hundred times worse.”

This was a bold move for a band whose members are still in their teens, whom Green Day had invited to play in front of 50,000-plus people a night alongside legends like Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid. But their boldness speaks to the Linda Lindas’ assurance of their status as rock’s favorite new stadium show opener.

After a July gig warming up for the Rolling Stones at SoFi Stadium (following festivals like Coachella and an arena tour with Paramore), the Linda Lindas are playing some of the biggest venues in the country in advance of their snappy, insouciant new album, “No Obligation,” set to drop in October.

Even with two members still in high school, they’re already very comfortable up there.

The Linda Lindas at Citi Field Stadium in New York

“It’s funny, the club shows are scarier because you can see every person,” guitarist Bela Salazar said. “But I honestly feel like, for me, the bigger the crowd, it’s less scary.”

The Linda Lindas — also with drummer Mila de la Garza — became sensations in May 2021, when they performed a pandemic-era live-streamed set at the Cypress Park library.

Then ranging in age from 10 to 16, the band (two siblings, a cousin and a family friend) had already honed their chops through the L.A. rock camp Girlschool, and had opened for heroes like Bikini Kill and Alice Bag. But their single “Racist, Sexist Boy” became an ultra-viral hit after that library set. The band released its charming, preternaturally accomplished debut, “Growing Up,” on the punk stalwart label Epitaph in 2022.

Now, after a few years of serious touring and writing while they completed their schoolwork, the band is gearing up for its second era — as an ambitious, relentless punk act who can hang with legends on their own merits.

“This amazing band from Japan called the Blue Hearts has a song called ‘Linda Linda,’ and I thought they must be great if that’s the reference they got their name from,” said Green Day singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, about his young tourmates. “Turns out they are a great band, and it was a no-brainer putting them on the bill. I think their success shows great taste and they have an independent spirit. If the Linda Lindas stay on that kind of path, they will make the best records of their generation.”

The Linda Lindas

The group didn’t even flinch when it met the Rolling Stones backstage at their SoFi gig in July.

“They were really nice!” Salazar said, of the rockers old enough to be their great-grandparents. “Mick Jagger was really jumpy, like exactly how he is onstage.”

“He sauntered over on his golf cart and gave us double fist bumps,” Wong recalled. “Ron Wood said hi to all of us at catering, and Keith Richards shook all of our hands like ‘Hello, I’m Keith,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know!’”

While it’s hard to imagine a band with more A-list supporters so early in its career, it would all mean nothing if its music didn’t back it up. On “No Obligation,” the Linda Lindas rip harder, think deeper and fully grow into their formidable talents and chemistry as a band.

“After the library video went viral, we were like ‘Oh, we should release something,’” Mila de la Garza said. “We’re so proud of our first record, but it wasn’t as intentional. We’ve gotten all this experience touring and playing, and we knew this record was going to be better than the first.”

It is. From the snarling title track opener to the tricky-timed, Spanish-language “Yo Me Estreso” and B-52’s worthy vamp “Resolution/Revolution,” their songs take big new swings and land pretty much all of them.

“All in My Head,” a Best Coast-style belter riffing on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel “My Year of Rest and Relaxation,” feels like a genuine radio single, with eminently quotable lyrics about modern therapy culture — “I like it better when it’s all in my head / The doctors know that I have money to spend.”

“It was this book with an unlikable protagonist where you’re like, ‘Oh, man, I kind of hate that I can relate to this character,’” Lucia de la Garza said.

The album lives up to the urgent precedent set by peers like Green Day on “American Idiot,” which lambasted the jingoistic culture of the Bush presidency in 2004. Yet even for a mixed-ethnic band of young women, who made their reputation with a brutal critique of toxic dudes, they’re still figuring out how to to wield their ferocity in a heated election cycle.

The Linda Lindas at Citi Field Stadium in New York

“It’s not like we’re going, ‘We’re gonna write this revolutionary song,’ ” Wong said. “It’s like, ‘Here’s something that sucks that I need to get out of my system.’ ”

“It’s really frustrating to be around young people that are perpetrating ideas that we wish weren’t so ingrained in our society,” Lucia de la Garza said. “But I don’t know if it’s the job of artists to speak about issues. I think it’s the job of human beings to do what they can and uplift everyone.”

They’ll have ample time to do it on Green Day’s stadium tour, which hits SoFi on Sept. 14. This will be the Linda Lindas’ last stand before the members who are still in school return from summer break. They say that they don’t brag to classmates about their exploits on the road and that they don’t feel like rock stardom has changed them much.

“We’re all still kids. I don’t think it’s hard for us to relate to our peers, or for our peers to relate to us,” Mila de la Garza said. “We’re just grateful that we get to spend our summer breaks recording music and playing with bands that we admire so much.”

But their more-seasoned headliner has words of warning, should the Linda Lindas start trashing their tour’s dressing rooms more often.

“Oh, those Linda Lindas have some pranks coming their way all right,“ Armstrong said. “Just remember that Green Day has pyro.”

Gregg Rolie Sings Five Songs With Journey During Surprise Encore Appearance in Texas

There has been a lot of fuss about which classic members may or may not join Journey on their current 50th anniversary tour and yesterday (Feb. 22), original singer and keyboardist Gregg Rolie made a surprise appearance, playing five songs with the group near the end of the night.

Prior to the tour's kickoff, there was speculation that Rolie (keyboard, originally lead vocals) could possibly return to the lineup after having departed more than 40 years ago in 1980. It was also rumored that singer Steve Perry, who took over as Journey's singer in 1977 (through 1987 and again from 1995 through 1998) after Rolie sang on the group's first three records, was in the mix for a return as well.

In mid-January, Michaele Schon, guitarist Neal Schon's wife, revealed that two members of the band were on "adamant no" on Rolie rejoining the band, also hinting at a future appearance, stating the two "will be somewhere together at least one time this year in honor of what they began in 1972."

As the tour swung by the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, it was the ideal time to welcome Rolie back to the stage, at least temporarily.

On Twitter , Rollie shared a video clip from the set and wrote, "When the band you helped start 50 years ago is playing down the street you've got one option... JOIN THEM on stage!"

Before bringing Rolie onstage, Schon addressed the crowd, informing fans (quote via UCR ), "We have an extra special set tonight. So when we go offstage at the end of the show, don't leave."

Singing on five songs, sharing the duties with drummer Deen Castronovo on two of them, Rolie also sat behind a Hammond organ during performances of "Just the Same Way," "Of a Lifetime" (played for the first time since 2005), "Feeling That Way," "Anytime" and a cover of Santana's "Black Magic Woman" (originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac) that also saw Toto guitarist Steve Lukather guest onstage.

See the complete setlist and fan-filmed video footage of Rolie's surprise appearance further down the page.

For Journey fans, Rolie's appearance is a nice moment to cherish amid a rocky year — one that has even seen current frontman Arnel Pineda express his frustration over all the drama. "[I'm] with the band to sing the legacy... if some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime," he shared earlier this month.

Journey's tour runs through April 25 — see the remaining dates here and head to this location to get tickets.

September marks Underground Railroad Month and to remember the role Louisville and southern Indiana played in the 19th century, Frazier History Museum has released a self-guided walking tour, "The Journey."

Mike Sullivan, the curator of guest experience at Frazier History Museum, said the goal of the tour is to help people discover the stories that they would otherwise not hear.

"We feel like there are so many stories. There are so many important, surprising, memorable and revolutionary stories that don't often get told," said Sullivan.

The tour highlights landmarks that played an important role in the Underground Railroad and the promise of a new life.

New Albany Church

People are able to follow along with the story of Thornton and Lucy Blackburn, a married couple who made a plan to get across the Ohio River to freedom. The couple eventually made their way to Toronto, where they made an impact for years to come.

The tour features six stops, four in Louisville and two in southern Indiana.

"Their story played this international role. There's international court cases, and their imprint is still felt dramatically in the city of Toronto. But, it all began here in Louisville," said Sullivan.

Some of the stops include the Belle of Louisville, On the Banks of Freedom Benches and Second Baptist Church, formerly known as Town Clock Church, where you can tour the Underground Railroad system that the Blackburns used.

You can find the link to the walking tour here . The tour is free for anyone to partake in.

Māori King Tūheitia’s death: How NZDF is helping feed mourners at Tūrangawaewae Marae

Maryana Garcia

Members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) will help to form the honour guard that guides the late Kīngi Tūheitia on his final journey at the banks of the Waikato River .

But NZDF staff have served in a less visible role at Tūrangawaewae Marae since the weekend.

From a small field by the river, 28 Army personnel have been supporting the marae’s catering services, cooking pāua, boil-up and fish to help feed the thousands of mourners welcomed onto the marae each day.

NZDF liaison officer Commander Tuijo Thompson has co-ordinated the Army’s services since Saturday.

“NZDF was requested through Te Puni Kōkiri by Tūrangawaewae Marae to be able to support. Specifically, we were asked to provide catering support.”

The NZDF responded by mobilising staff from Papakura, Linton, and Burnham military camps.

“We have a catering detachment of 28 personnel, nine vehicles, and various pieces of equipment,” Thompson said.

“Essentially we have three field kitchens and they have been providing support to the whare kai and the ringawera here for the multitudes that have arrived for Kīngi Tūheitia’s tangihana.”

Like clockwork and with military efficiency, the Army personnel fire up their equipment at precise times, the team working like a well-oiled machine to get food to the dining room on time.

Thompson said supporting a tangihana of national significance has been important for him as an officer.

“But also, individually I am from Tainui waka. My iwi are Ngāti Hauā and Ngāti Pāoa,” Thompson said.

“So the opportunity to support both the NZDF effort and the Kīngitanga in a dual role has been very special for me.”

Thompson said the catering detachment has received “exceptional feedback” from marae kitchen staff and “all the whānau”.

“There are some who have a lot of experience doing this type of mahi,” Thompson said of the 28 NZDF staff.

“We have at least one who was here during the tangihana of Dame Te Atairangikaahu.

“Then at the more junior end we have some for whom this is the first time at Tūrangawaewae. We have some for whom this is the first time they have supported a tangihana.

“So with that breadth of experience it has been interesting to see that across the board everyone is absolutely privileged and excited to be here to support the Kīngitanga and this tangihana for the motu.”

Ellensburg Win Helps Veteran Tie-Down Roper Stay on Right Side of NFR Cutline

Alex riley | 3 minutes ago.

If he's going to reach his 14th NFR, tie-down roper Hunter Herrin will need to continue adding on to his earnings and avoid missing the cutline. A win in Ellensburg over the weekend certainly helped.

Hunter Herrin needed something to go his way.

For much of the year, the veteran tie-down roper has put together solid runs. He’s earned a fair amount of money, close to $89,000 coming into the Labor Day weekend.

But, with the regular season just a few weeks from wrapping up, the Apache, Okla., cowboy finds himself flirting with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo cutline in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. He was sitting 14th as of Monday’s rankings.

As if on cue, Herrin came into the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo and did what he does best at the event – win.

For the third time in his career, Herrin left Ellensburg as the average champion, finishing his three runs in 26.4 seconds to secure the title. He previously won the rodeo in 2014 and 2022.

“Probably the biggest thing is I drew some user-friendly cattle,” Herrin said of his success. “Today (in the finals), I had a calf that Riley Webb won the second round on, so I knew she was really good. But we didn’t need to try to go faster than Riley. He went 7.5 on her, so we just needed to get a good start and make the best run I could and it worked out.”

After placing third in the first-go, Herrin missed round money on his second run, finishing a tenth-of-a-second away from tying for eighth.

While he didn't pick up additional earnings, his times of 8.5 and 9.1 seconds set him up for a chance to finish strong. He did just that by going for 8.8 seconds in the short-go to win the round. His 26.4-second aggregate total was slightly ahead of Seth Hall at 26.7.

Hunter Herrin's fifth straight and 14th overall NFR is back in his sights after a win in Ellensburg! pic.twitter.com/K2CysEpTWf — The Cowboy Channel (@Cowboy_Channel) September 2, 2024

The outcome marks just Herrin’s third rodeo championship of the 2024 season, and his first at an event that wasn’t a one head competition.

More important than the title was the prize money. In total, Ellensburg paid out $9,188, which will go a long way towards keeping him in the top 15. Herrin was less than $1,000 ahead of Marcos Costa at 15th coming into the weekend, but more than $10,000 back of Cole Clemons for 13th place.

Like any seasoned pro, he’s already got the next few weeks mapped out, starting with runs at places like Lewiston, Idaho, and Puyallup, Wash., this week. Then, it’s Pendleton, Ore., and Albuquerque, N.M., before a short period off. After that, it’s a sprint to the finish with stops across the country to try and keep adding on to his ledger.

Hunter Herrin had the quickest hands in Ellensburg to secure the Tie-Down Roping Champion title! Posted by Ellensburg Rodeo on  Monday, September 2, 2024

Ellensburg was a good launch point for the final few weeks of the regular season. But if there’s anything the 13-time NFR qualifier knows, it's that there’s still a long way to go, even as time winds down.

“Today helped for sure. It’s still so packed in there and so tight. If I had to guess there’s five or six guys battling for two, maybe three spots,” Herrin said. “So we’ll just keep pushing and fighting and then at the end of the month we’ll see what we can do with it.”

Other results from the Ellensburg Rodeo

Bareback rider Jess Pope won the average title with 173.5 points on two head. In total, he walked away with $9,233.

Dakota Eldridge earned the steer wrestling aggregate title, going for 13.3 seconds on three head. He secured $10,993 in total earnings.

The team roping duo of Brenten Hall and Kaden Profili finished their three runs in a combined 16.6 seconds to win the average and take home $9,113 each.

Wyatt Casper won the saddle bronc average title with 177 points on two head. He claimed $9,585 in total prize money.

Barrel racer Jodee Miller finished her three runs in a combined 51.54 seconds to finish atop the average. She earned $7,069 in all.

Breakaway roper Josie Conner won the average title in 7.8 seconds on three head. She secured $10,311 in overall prize money.

Maverick Smith was the only bull rider to cover both animals he faced, finishing at 174.5 points on two head to earn a total of $11,118.

The all-around championship went to Seth Hall as he claimed $8,432 in combined earnings between tie-down and team roping.
