Throttle Control or Electronic Cruise Control

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

  • Add to quote

Hello my fellow V-Strom Enthusiasts, I am on the fence whether or not to fork out the cash for an electronic cruise control (MC Cruise), or go with the cheaper option and purchase a Kaoko throttle control. We are talking about a $500 difference. I was hoping if any of you can provide insight on your experiences or recommendations. Thanks!

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

An electronic cruise control is so much better. It is easier to engage, disengages when the brake is applied, keeps the set speed regardless of down or up road angle changes and never vibrates down to a lower throttle opening. The cheaper option I would prefer is a Rostra or CCS100 Electronic CC. Both are far from plug and play though.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

I have the Rostra, about $250. The installation is straightforward if you follow the instructions in the CC thread, but long. It is more or less a full day to install. I have used both a throttle lock and the Rostra. If you ride mostly on flat interstate, the throttle lock is sufficient. If you simply want brief respite for your right hand, the throttle lock is sufficient. If however, you want constant speed and freedom to move your right hand around, then an electronic cruise control is the way to go. After using one for over 80,000 miles on an '09 650, it was the first farkle I bought for the new '15 DL1000. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

I am happy w/ the Kaoka, you have to be aware of inclines etc. to anticipate the+- of the speed, but that just keeps ya aware of the whole situation.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

My only reason for having a cruise control is to keep the police off my back. I can set my speed then ignore the speedo, I will be within +or - 1kph of the set speed. A throttle lock will give your right hand a break but it will not maintain a set speed.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

It also works well on long curvy and hilly roads like the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

Not so much once you hit NC. :wink2:

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

To disengage a throttle lock you have to pull the clutch and turn the throttle all the way forward at the same time, not so easy to do in a panic situation, like if a deer suddenly appears or a ladder is on the road or something. Does that ever happen? Likely not, but it could. A real cruise control will maintain a set speed and you can +/- it which would be awesome, disadvantage being cost and installation.

You've got a pretty good cross section of answers already. From my point of view if the money spent won't prevent you from getting something else you need, ... go all the way. Or if you care for simplicity get a thumb-lever mechanical throttle lock. I have one bike with a electronic cruise. OEM BMW. Works as good or better than any you'd find in a car. All the others, including my V2, have the old style thumb lock . I never feel cheated by the simple ones. In fact I think they are just as easy to use and reaching down to add / remove a touch of speed is just as normal as checking my mirrors. Which ever way you go it is worth it for long hauls not have the right side of your body handcuffed to one position.

People just love to spend money. My $30 C clamp type has worked great for years. I was even just looking at that Torowhatzit chain oiler. $150+ Canadian. Think I'll just stick to sittin on the ground and cleaning and oiling before big rides.:laugh2:

I think you have plenty of good responses, and I'd probably go with one of the elec cruise options if the install wasn't daunting to someone of my skill level. But to comment on the "cheaper" options I've had the Kaoko now on two bikes including my V2 and I've found that on long days it tries to back itself off my handlebars if I use it too long holding 75+ mph. Something the Throttlemeister has not done in almost 14 years on my Honda ST13. Not sure if they make one for the V2 with handguards? Its a pretty quick adjustment, but another allen key to carry in my tank bag and something I have to check at gas stops. Ride Safe, TRM

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

Maybe age has something to do with it? ...or maybe not. Always used throttle locks, and felt they were "adequate". Then, after somewhere near 400,000 miles I put a Rostra Electronic CC on my '07 DL650. Holeey crap, I am now officially spoiled and will never own another road bike without eeeee lec Tronic cruise.

My next ADV bike will have it "factory", I am just not going to go through the hassle of installing aftermarket on my Strom......kudos to those that have. :smile2:

I just installed a brakeaway device and love it, turns off with use of brakes and very easy to set. I would call it the in between option that is better than most, but not as great as electronic of course. But it works wonderful.

Name please od devi6

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

When I had my Vee I used a cramp buster and a throttle lock. It was effective but not as safe as I liked. But, it allowed right wrist and shoulder rest. As for cruise, it came standard on my second S10. I still use the same cramp buster. I will not be without CC again on any bike for any use. I used to not feel this way. I also avoid long, boring roads. But, I find myself setting the CC at low speeds, like 35 mph even, to give my wrist and especially shoulder muscles a break. I love it now. And for that interstate that we all need to ride every now and then CC makes it as nice as possible, still boring, but nice. But, like I opened with, a throttle lock is better than nothing and 90% effective as a cruise control.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

I've been farkling up my current Vee2 (almost done, I swear) and it is addicting. I've pretty much left all my previous bikes stock. Currently content with the Kaoko throttle lock for occasional use/relief. I loved the factory cruise on my K1200LT. I think if I ever decide I must have electric CC, it will come factory installed on my next new bike. A man's got to know his limitations!

I've used both, and in my opinion, there is no comparison between cruise control and a throttle lock! It's a perfect example of getting what you pay for. If you invest the time and $$ in cruise, you will never regret it; if you go throttle lock, you will be at least a little dissatisfied every time you use it. At least I was.

To those who have never had a real electronic cruise control on your bike, disrespectfully, your opinion has no basis in comparison. I decided upon having a bike with ABS brakes and a real electronic cruise control that I'd never have a bike without either again.

I have an Atlas throttle lock on my 650. Works fine and speed is easy to adjust, simply open or close the throttle. It also fits any bike so you can take it with you. Google Atlas throttle lock

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

Another big thumbs up for the Rostra CC. The installation wasn't that hard, but it was time consuming. Like others have said, it'll take the better part of a day to install. I really can't add anything else that hasn't already said.

When I put the CC on my '07 Wee, I just figured it was the next thing I'd like to have at the time. It, an aftermarket windscreen and a better seat were the three main changes that made the bike a great touring mount. I didn't realize how important I would consider it until I had it and headed for the Rockies. When I got the Glee in '12, I rode it a couple of weeks to make sure it didn't have any warranty issues then took it apart to add all the stuff I learned I wanted to have from riding the Wee. Windscreen, seat and cruise control along with support for heated gear were the must have items.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

I'm currently using an Omni Cruise throttle lock. I really want CC. My right hand and wrist are pretty beat up and I believe CC would be a lot nicer.

I see a lot of mention of Rostra. I didn't find any motorcycle specific on their site. Are people fitting the universal model to MC's?

Yes, use the universal one. Rostra does not support motorcycle installations, so you may be depending on this group for your main source of tech support. The good news is that there are some experienced competent installed here. Sent from my SM-G930U using Tapatalk

Mad, here is just one of many Rostra install threads...lots's good info: http://www.stromtrooper.com/mainten...onic-cruise-control-install-instructions.html Here is another one, but I warn you......RuggyBuggy's Avatar will permanently sear your retina : http://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650-dl650a-2004-2011/37860-rostra-cruise-control-fairing.html

I too am interested in an electronic cruise control. Thanks to Rolex and others, I think I will spend the $$$ on the McCruise unit. It is motorcycle specific and brand specific. The guys at McCruise have already answered several of my questions very quickly. I think the install might be over my head so I went to my local trusted mechanic and he said he could do it. When I sent that info to McCruise they told me -"No problem and if he needs anything tell him to shot them and email or call." And they provided a number. So far, great customer service and I think it will continue. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

The Yamaha V Star 650 is a cruiser-style motorcycle that entered the market in 1997 (model year 1998).

Remaining mostly unchanged through its long run, the V Star 650 has been a popular choice for riders looking for an affordable and reliable bike that doesn’t sacrifice style or comfort.

The V Star 650 has a 649cc engine and is available in several different colors, making it a versatile option for just about any rider.

The V Star 650 has a great balance between power and comfort.

It’s equipped with a 5-speed transmission that offers plenty of power for everyday cruising, but still maintains a relatively low yet strong engine rumble at lower speeds.

While Yamaha has discontinued the V Star 650, it still remains an ideal bike for beginner riders who specifically wanted to get into motorcycles after dreaming of riding around on a classic looking cruiser.

We’ll take a closer look at the Yamaha V Star 650 and help you find out if it’s the right bike for you.

Yamaha V Star 650 Specs and Features

Key specs for the V Star 650 include:

  • Engine : 649cc V-twin air cooled
  • Power : 39 horsepower
  • Torque : 37.5 pound-feet
  • Trims : V Star Classic, V Star Custom, V Star Silverado

The Yamaha V Star 650 features a low-slung seat, allowing riders to sit in a comfortable cruiser position.

The bike has plenty of room for two passengers, and the passenger footrests are adjustable as well.

The motorcycle also has a center stand, allowing riders to take care of routine maintenance without needing to lift it off the ground.

The V Star 650 was available with a variety of accessories designed to customize the look and performance of the motorcycle.

It was also offered with optional touring trunks and windshields for long-distance rides.

Some of these options were included with different trims of the V Star 650.

Yamaha discontinued the V Star 650 after 2021.

New models of the bike are no longer available, but plenty are available on the used market.

For an idea of what the V Star 650 might be worth, the original MSRP usually started around $6,000.

Nowadays, you can find used models listed as low as $2,500 and as high as nearly $9,000 on used motorcycle trading sites.

How Does It Ride?

The V Star 650 is a zippy motorcycle that’s easy to handle for all levels of riders.

It has plenty of power for highway cruising, though it may feel a little sluggish at higher speeds over 75 MPH.

The torque is solid, getting you up to speed quickly and providing good acceleration in the mid-range.

The bike has a comfortable riding position, with plenty of room for two passengers.

The seat is low enough that you’ll be able to touch the ground with both feet while seated, making it a great choice for shorter riders .

The bike handles well at lower speeds and is easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

Overall, the Yamaha V Star 650 is a great all-around motorcycle that’s ideal for beginner and intermediate riders alike.

It has plenty of features and options available, making it easy to customize your ride to suit your needs.

With reliable performance and an affordable price tag, it’s no wonder the V Star 650 is still a popular choice for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Who Is This Bike Made For?

The Yamaha V Star 650 is an excellent choice for riders who want a reliable and stylish bike that offers plenty of power.

Its affordability, comfort, and versatility make it a great choice for any rider.

Many consider the V Star 650 a great entry-level bike for those beginners who have always dreamed about riding around on a cruiser .

It’s not an overwhelming ride, but it’s still more than capable of handling long-distance trips and daily commutes.

Will Yamaha Bring Back the V Star 650

Unfortunately, Yamaha discontinued the V Star 650 after 2021 .

You can still find used models on the market, but there’s no indication that Yamaha will be bringing back this bike any time soon.

Time will tell if Yamaha revisits the V Star 650.

Transmission, wheels & tires, technical specifications, instrumentation, paint & finish, convenience, user reviews, my experience.

Unfortunately, I am a victim of odometer fraud. This limits my ability to really give the V Star credit for the great bike it is. Odometer reads 16,xxx and did a VIN check AFTER I purchased it to find out it has 46,xxx miles on it. I put on 800 miles personally. Paid $2,400 and have about $1,200 ... in parts. Here's a list of what I have done.

1.) Brake pads with full synthetic brake fluid.

2.) New spark plugs

3.) Fuel filter

4.) New clutch

5.) New shifter pedal

6.) K&N filter

7.) Vance and Hines pipes

8.) Full synthetic oil

9.) New grips

10.) Brand new drum shoes and springs

11.) Brand new final gear assembly ($550)

Basically, I'm the final owner of this bike as it can not be sold knowing this information. I love the bike and the power it has for a 650 hence the labor of love and will hope for another 46,000 miles out of it.

Rating breakdown

My yamaha 1100 v star classic.

This bike is most awesome. I am a lady rider. I am always getting comments about how big the bike is. It is big but it is so easy to handle. It is bold and a beautiful black. Even as big as it is, I rarely have to even put my feet down when it is almost at a complete stop. It is smooth. I have ... ridden with plenty of Harleys and you know what, when they are having to work on their bike or have problems when we are out on the road..... I am ridin' high!! My bike is almost maintenance free... really!! I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Thanks Yamaha!!

12 Reasons Why You Should Consider Buying A Yamaha V Star 650

I f you're in the market for a cruiser today , there's no shortage of options. Getting a new Harley-Davidson, for instance, would be right up there on most people's list, given their legacy. But they're also quite expensive, so options from Honda, Suzuki, Indian, and a lot more are also in the offing.

UPDATE: 2024/01/19 15:58 EST BY RAUNAK AJINKYA

Cruisers, regardless of whether you buy them used or new, almost have an unwavering demand. Given that, we have updated this piece with a few more reasons why the discontinued Yamaha V-Star 650 is still worth a second look.

So why, then, would you entertain the idea of not just picking a motorcycle that's been discontinued but is also thoroughly outstripped by almost every other cruiser in most regards? The Yamaha V-Star 650 is the cruiser in question, and as it turns out, what counted against it while it was still in production is actually what's giving it a new lease in the latter half of its life.

This list was compiled using factual data from Yamaha's official website about the V-Star 650 cruiser. Other relevant information was sourced from reliable websites that accurately depict the overall ownership experience.

We Can't Stop Staring At These Awesome Yamaha Cruiser Bikes

Yamaha v star 650 styling.

If you like chrome, you will love the Yamaha V-Star 650. It has soft, traditional cruiser lines and will appeal to anyone who likes bikes from the '60s and '70s. Even though it is a mid-size cruiser in terms of power, size-wise, it is very much a full-size bike. A sheep in wolf’s clothing, if you will.

The effect is that you get a cruiser that is much more compact than it actually looks, giving it great maneuverability and overall riding ease. Subtle-yet-effective styling traits dominate the V-Star 650's design language. That's one of the biggest reasons it has aged so gracefully despite being out of production since 2017.

Yamaha V-Star 650 Design Highlights

  • Traditional cruiser styling
  • Plenty of chrome
  • Wide handlebars
  • Forward controls
  • Upright seating

Low Seat Height

Like almost any cruiser, the V-Star 650 has a very approachable seat height, opening the bike up to new riders and those who are a little vertically challenged . Not only does the seat height ensure that more people can get comfortable on the V-Star 650 quickly, but it also ensures that it's beginner-friendly.

Specs sourced from Motorcycle Specs

Ample Performance For Cruising

Max torque output: 37.5 lb-ft.

To be clear, the V-Star 650 is neither a powerful bike nor a sport cruiser . The best way to describe its power and torque output would be to call it adequate. It is, however, enough to go cruising. Its 40 horsepower is enough to get it up to highway speed just fine, and its mile-munching abilities aren't in question.

Here's What Makes The Yamaha V-Star 650 A Good Beginner Bike

Comfortable cruiser.

Not only will the bike crunch miles, but it will do it while giving you a very comfortable place to sit. It doesn’t have much in the way of suspension travel, but as long as you stay on paved roads, it will absorb pretty much everything you throw at it.

The forward controls are not so extreme that they make you feel uncomfortable, they just rather effectively put you in a laid back position that will remain pretty comfortable right up until your next stop for gas.

2014 Yamaha V-Star 650 Suspension And Tire Specs

Unique v-twin, max power: 40 hp.

With a range of 200 miles and a top cruising speed of 96 mph, you will spend at most three hours in the saddle at a time. It is a very efficient V-twin that sounds great. It was around for several years and has only been out of production for around five, so even the dealers will still have parts on hand.

2014 Yamaha V-Star Engine Specs

Yamaha's bulletproof reliability, owners' reliability rating: 4.5/5.

As long as you take care of basic maintenance on the V-Star 650, this flexible Yamaha cruiser will go on forever . The Japanese marque has built an incredible reputation for reliability, and this bike is no exception.

It is mechanically simplistic, so if you like working on your bikes or just want to learn, this is a great bike to start with. And clearly, the reliability rating of 4.5/5 proves that people who've lived with the V-Star 650 have had little to no issues with it.

Here's What Makes The Yamaha V Star 250 A Top Notch Cruiser

Running costs.

If you are willing to take on some basic maintenance tasks yourself, it will cost next to nothing to run. On average, owners have reported an annual service cost of a shade above $500 , which is very reasonable once you consider the kind of bike you're getting.

Even if you are not willing to do the work yourself, there is likely a Yamaha dealership in your town that won’t charge all that much to do the work for you. It is also a low-compression, under-stressed engine designed for longevity.

Yamaha V Star 650 Efficiency

Average fuel efficiency: 47 mpg.

The Yamaha V-Star 650, so far, plays the part of a relaxed, simplistic cruiser quite well. But one of the key aspects of cruising is how long you can go between fill-ups at gas bunkers, and here, too, the V-Star comes through commendably.

It features a fuel tank capacity of 4.2 gallons that, once you apply the average stated fuel consumption of 47 MPG, translates to a 202-mile range. Admittedly, there are a fair few motorcycles out there that can better this figure, but for the kind of cruiser that the V-Star 650 is, the figure is quite respectable.

Yamaha V-Star 650 Efficiency

  • Fuel tank capacity - 4.2 gallons
  • Average fuel efficiency - 47 MPG
  • Average range per tankful - 200+ miles

Old-School Cool

The V-Star 650 has a certain charm, something that newer, more complex bikes simply don’t have. Admittedly, using something intangible like charm as a deciding factor might not seem like a scientific way to do things. Still, the truth of the matter is that these decisions aren't always logical, either.

The only new equivalent to the V-Star might be a Royal Enfield 350, but the Yamaha has it licked for comfort and reliability.

Here's What We Love About The Yamaha V-Star 1300

This is not the kind of bike you should buy if you have an ego to satisfy. This is a humble motorcycle that gets the job done for those riders who know what they want.

At a stretch, it can even be said that the V-star 650 is a fun bike to cruise on and even commute on, and will likely never let you down. Unfortunately, it will not necessarily get the pulse going with electric acceleration or incredible face-melting torque. It just isn’t that kind of bike.

Great Value

With the way the V-Star 650 is and for all it represents, it isn’t a desirable motorcycle per se. So, the V-Star offers tremendous value for those who just want to ride and don’t care about image or brand loyalty.

It is also a bike that enjoyed a pretty long production run, so it isn’t as if they are in short supply either.

Yamaha V Star 650 Used Examples Are Abundant

Used price range: $1,800-$4,000.

The Yamaha V-Star 650, then, comes across as a laid-back, relaxed, efficient, and reliable cruiser. It won't set the heart racing by any means, but it makes up for what it misses out on excitement by being utterly rock solid and reliable.

The V-Star 650 has been out of production for quite a while now, but it enjoyed a remarkably long production run. Consequently, if this kind of cruiser is exactly what you're looking for, you'd be happy to know there's no shortage of them in the used market. In fact, you can get one for a throwaway price. The cheapest we could identify one for was around $1,800, with the price range going up to a still-affordable $4,000.

V star 650 mid controls

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

Hey guys, has anyone ever fabed up mid controls to replace the forward ones on there star? It would be too cramped for me, but my honey is definitely more comfortable in that position.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

I'm not a big fan of the forward controls myself. The PO of my bike had the extended fwd controls (tall dude). I took the extension bracket and flipped it to the rear. Looks like it will work but it will need some modifications. Clutch rod will have to be shortened and rear brake components will have to be relocated. Ill snap some pics for you later today if you like.

That would be cool man. Do the brackets look out of place flipped around backwards? I was a little concerned with shortening the linkages so much, I didn’t know if it would change the geometry of things to the point where it was miserable to try to shift or not.

yamaha v star 650 cruise control

Before I scrapped the plan of turning my 650 Classic into a scrambler, my plan was to use the side stand mounts on the frame to fit a bracket onto that would move the peg even further back, and weld on a new mount for a new side stand. Then replicate a similar setup for the RHS, welding in lugs like those for the side stand to hold a peg on the side.

The pics definitely help. My main concern looking at the 650 is the kickstand. Plenty to think about though, off to the garage to fire up the torch and welder 😁
