guide Lion safari Gir forest national park

Lion Safari in Gir Forest National park, A complete guide

We all have learned that Lion is the king of forest, but usually we get to see the lion king in the prison, I mean Zoo. Seeing Lion captivated in few square meter doesn’t suit at all because lion itself is a symbol of power and pride. Wouldn’t it be great, if we could able to see lion walking freely in his own territory and that too in India. I am talking about lion safari in Gir forest of Gujarat. Here is a quick guide for you, so that you can plan your visit of Gir National Park for a memorable lion safari without any hitch .

India is the only home of lion outside Africa. Gir forest in the southern Gujarat is the real home of Asiatic lion , spread mainly in Junagarh, Amreli and Gir-Somnath districts. Around 250 Sq. In this lion safari you go to Devalia safari park (Gir Interpretation Zone) , which is a fenced park of 400 hectare. This park is located near Devalia village, about 10 Km from Sasan village .

Main aim to develop this park was to reduce the load of tourists from Gir National Park, at the same time providing opportunity to see entire wildlife of Gir forest at a single place. Some tourist see it as an open zoo in which visitors be in cage instead of animals.

  • In Devalia safari park, you get opportunities of seeing lion for sure, along with other animals of Gir forest, like; Leopards, Sambhar, Chital, Black buck, Wild Boar, etc.

In ‘Jungle trail’ 12 routes are defined within the Gir National Park, but you have to move through the path allotted to you only. Distributing the traffic to different route is for balancing the traffic equally in forest, so that disturbance to the wild life could be minimize.

Birds at Gir forest

Obviously, looking for the lions always the first priorities of visitor, but should not ignore other features of Gir forest. And our guide had drawn our attention towards these beautiful pair of Owls.

You are not supposed to speak louder in the forest, keep that in mind. Gir forest accommodate several kind of animals like leopards, wild boars, monitor lizard, Chital, Blue bull etc.

Chitals in Gir national park

Forest department created several artificial water hole near the routes of Safari. When natural resources gets dry, animal can come to these water holes that also provide opportunity for visitor to see the wild life of Gir National Park .

It is also very common to see a herd of Chitals grazing around. There are many different bird species too and you can see many peafowl around.

Gir forest have several species of plants and trees, almost 80% of forest is covered with Sagwan trees. Wood of Sagwan tree is quite costly in market, so protecting these forest from illegal cutting of tree is also a challenge.

I was lucky enough that I could saw the two lions, they were not in hurry may be resting after morning patrolling. I was in the time slot of 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM of Jungle trail, though chance of seeing lion is higher in the first slot ( 6 AM to 9 AM).

Stay at Sasan Gir

Sasan is a very small village, you can book your stay within the village so you can reach Sinh Sadan comfortably. Staying at Sasan village is quite economical as compare to any forest lodge, there are many budget option at Sasan, starting from Rs. 500/- per night, like Hotel Umang ( Where I stayed).

There are many restaurant on the main Junagarh-Talala road that offer Kathiyawadi Thali , ranging from Rs. 100/- to Rs. 150/-.

Best time to visit Gir National Park

As the region of Gir National park is very close to the Arabian Sea, it face moderate temperature in winter, but considerably hot in summer. So, its batter to plan your lion safari from October to February and book the first slot ( 6 AM to 9 AM), if possible.

Apart from Lion safari in Gir forest, you can also plan desert safari in white desert of Kutch on Gujarat trip.

Once extinct, numbers have been recovered owing to the conservation efforts. The Sanctuary is open for tourism from 16th October to 15th June every year.

Junagadh is perhaps the best approach to the park. The railway station in Junagadh receives trains from different cities like Ahmedabad and Rajkot and other major cities. Then, from here it takes approximately one and half hour to reach Sasan Gir National Park.

From Rajkot-On reaching Rajkot Railway Station or Airport you can take a cab or bus and to reach a Limda chowk. There are a number of privately operated that go to Junagadh at frequent intervals. Junagadh is nearly 105 Kms from the city Rajkot and it takes nearly 2 and a half to 3 hours to cover the distance. From this point you have two options. First one is either you take a bus from gate number 11or 12 to Sasan Gir or travel by taxi that is accessible bang opposite the taxi stand. The taxi will take nearly one and half an hour and will charge reasonably and will drop you to Sasan Gir.

From Somnath to Gir National Park : Road Distance or the driving distance from the Gir National Park to Somnath is approximately 50 Kms and it takes nearly 1 hour to cover this distance. GSRTC buses and quite a few private buses ply between both the cities and take you directly to Sasan Gir Forest.

Nearby places or cities

It is interesting to know that very few places in Gujarat have the diversity that Junagadh offers. Situated at the foothills of the Girnar range, Junagadh got its name because of Uparkot, a fort built by ChandraGupta Maurya during the 320 BC. “Old Fort” as the word Junagadh means, the fort is the main centre of the city.

Tourist Places In and Around Junagadh

Navghan Kuvo and Adi-kadi Vav are a pair of ancient step wells that were not built, but cut out of solid rock, delved 170 feet into the heart of solid rock to find water at the bottom. The Gir National Park famous for the last Asiatic Lions is the most popular reserve forest of the entire Gujarat.

History of Junagarh

Junagadh is quite ancient, as it existed during the reigns of Chandra Gupta Maurya and King Ashoka. Inscriptions dating back to the era of the Saka ruler - Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I - can also be found. During Mohammad Bahadur Khanji I, the present city of Junagadh was founded.

Girnar is one of the most important and holy pilgrimage centres of both Hindus and Jains. Girnar is a range of mountains usually known as the Girnar Hills. Girnar has been mentioned in the Vedas and also in the scriptures from the Indus Valley Civilization proving that it has always been respected as a sacred place.

The Hindu and Jain Temples

There are five peaks in the Girnar range that have a collection of many Hindu and Jain Temples. Pilgrims need to climb thousands and thousands of steps in order to reach these temples. Amongst the Jain Temples are the Tirthankara Neminath temple, Mallinath Temple, Rishabhdev Temple and the Parshwanath Temple. The Hindu temples are the Bhavnath Mahadev Temple, the Dattatreya Temple, the Amba Mata Temple, the Kalika Temple, the Ramchandra Temple, the Jatashankar Mahadev Temple, and the Gaumukhi Ganga Temple and there is also a stream called the Hanuman Dhara on the Western side of the Girnar hills.

In 1540 A.D. Jam Raval founded the city of Jamnagar as the capital of the Princely State of Nawanagar. The city was established around the Ranmal Lake and at the confluence of the rivers Rangmati and Nagmati. The city was later refurbished by Maharaja Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji in the 1920s and later came to be known as Jamnagar or “the city of Jams”. The word 'Jam' means 'king' and this area was ruled by the Jadeja Rajput rulers, who were thought to be the descendants of Krishna’s Yadava clan. Lord Krishna had relocated the Yadavas from Mathura to establish his kingdom in Dwarka which falls under the Jamnagar district.

The Foundation stone of Jamnagar

Jam Lakaji, father of Jam Rawal was awarded twelve villages by Bahadur Shah. Later, Jam Rawal moved to Kathiawar and founded the city of Nawanagar (the new town). Under the rule of Jam Vibhaji in 1852, the city progressed due to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and the railway line to Rajkot.

Sasan Gir Safari – Gir National Park Lion Safari, Gujarat, India

Sasan Gir Safari

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park is thrilling.

Sasan Gir Lions

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park, Gujarat India is thrilling.

“ Don’t make any body movements “! was the staccato command issued by our guide Siddi Bapu. The six of us in the open jeep froze in our skins. Coming straight towards us was a full-grown lion. Not a muscle in our bodies twitched, as we watched transfixed. The lion came nearer and nearer. As he drew nearer, the embodiment of leonine beauty and grace mesmerized us.

As he walked, each leg rising and falling on the ground with perfect precision in a fluid movement, the jungle itself serenaded him. It was like the hero making his entry in a Bollywood film. He walked to the background music of crows and other birds striking up a racket. Our Sasan Gir Safari in Gujarat , India was surely turning to be the stuff of dreams, we thought in elation.

Read on to know more about our encounter with the King of the Jungle on our Sasan Gir Lion Safari. This Sasan Gir Safari travel blog will also provide all the information needed to plan an exciting visit to the wildlife sanctuary including details about Gir National Park entry fees, Gir Safari booking, Gir Safari rates, Gir National Park timings , and much more.

Sasan Gir Safari – Cavorting With Lions

Sunrise at Sasan Gir

The winter season ensured that there was a nip in the air as we drove past some wheat fields bathed in golden morning light towards the Reception Centre of the Gir National Park to begin our Gir Jungle Safari. We were really optimistic about sighting the big cat in what is the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

There is nothing that can beat the pleasure of watching wildlife in their natural environment, the thrill is unique, be it meeting mountain gorillas face-to-face in Africa, or catching the glimpse of the Royal Bengal tiger at the Pench National Park, or visiting any of the Wildlife sanctuaries in India . As we drove into the Reception Centre we had only one thing on our minds, Lions!

Sasan Gir Safari

The Reception Centre is where we picked up our guide Siddhi Bapu.

Siddi Guide in Sasan Gir National Park

He belonged to the Siddi community that trace their ancestry to East Africa. In India, this community is found in regions of Gujarat, Karnataka , and Andhra Pradesh. Siddi Bapu informed us that his ancestors were from Nigeria. However, they have no connections with Nigeria now. They are fully integrated into the local culture and follow local customs.

Entry Gate to Gir National Park

Chatting with our guide we left the Sinh Sadan where the Reception Centre of Gir National Park is located and drove a few kilometres to reach the gate that led into the Gir National Park. We had been allotted Route No. 4 and the gate through which we entered the Park was common for routes 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, and 12. There is a different entry gate for the other routes. There is a total of 13 routes from which each Safari jeep gets allocated one.

Gir National Park

The sunlight pierced through the overhanging branches of the trees. We drove behind the brown cloud of dust blown by the jeep in front. Our guide regaled us with stories of Lions, he told us about the 2020 Lion census that was coming up. He also told us about celebrity visitors with whom he had guided during the Lion Safari.

“ Amitabh Bachhan had to do 3 Safaris before he could get a lion sighting,” said Siddi Bapu with a sardonic smile playing on his lips. He then went on to narrate an incident where a foreigner failed to get a Lion sighting even after camping there for a couple of weeks and going on numerous Lion Safaris!

Sasan Gir Safari

Was he subtly preparing us for disappointment? Were we destined to return empty-handed? Or would we get lucky on our first safari itself? These were the questions that hummed through our minds as we drove deeper into the teak wood laden Gir forest in search of Lions.

A movement in the bushes to our right caught our attention. They turned out to be a small herd of docile deer glancing shyly at us. Their serene composure was testimony to the absence of any Lion in the vicinity.

Sasan Gir National Park

We crossed a rivulet and the Guide informed us that the water was the home of crocodiles, though we did not spot any. Probably, they were spread languorously on the rocks behind basking in the sun.

Landscape of Gir National Park

A cute little bird drank water from a small stream as a couple of trees threw their shadows in the water. It was a picture of serenity. Everything seemed calm in the jungle. Things seemed to be in perfect harmony, the only jarring effect perhaps was our presence.

A sounder of wild boars made their way noiselessly in the shadows. We came upon a small clearing in the path. It was then that we saw the Lion.

Lions of Sasan Gir

In the distance, straight in front of us a Lion crossed the track and sat down beside it. There were two jeeps in front of us and we were still quite a distance from it.

Asiatic Lion of Gir National Park

The jeeps had stopped in their tracks. It was clear that now it was going to be a game of waiting.

Asiatic Lion

The lion sat gazing towards the path and was soon joined by another Lion who too crossed the path and sat next to the first lion.

We were delighted! We had been able to sight not one but two lions. But alas! they were quite far off. The two lions are male and are siblings informed our guide, they are 3.5 years old and control a wide territory, he added.

“Reverse”! on hearing this, our jeep started retreating in reverse, so did the other two jeeps. It became clear why this was done very soon. One of the lions stood up and started walking along the path, straight towards us.

This was when Siddi Bapu issued his stern command, “Don’t make any body movements”!

Lion sighting at Sasan Gir

The Lion sauntered towards the front jeeps, crossed them and slowly, with a typical, “devil may care”, attitude walked past us. It passed from the right side of our jeep and disappeared into the woods. Even as we looked in amazement at the leonine grace of the big cat retreating into the jungle, it dawned on us that there was another big cat behind us!

Lion sigting Gir National Park

As we turned back towards the point where the two Lions had been sitting, we saw the second Lion too following the footprints of his brother Lion, but with a difference.

The second Lon moved towards our left flank. He walked towards the trees and then took a slight turn and came straight towards our jeep. We could literally hear his breathing and are sure he would have heard the loud thumping of our hearts.

Lion Safari at Gir National Park

Our eyes met for a fraction of a second, and he was gone in a flash of golden glory. The mand on his lithe body glistening in the sunlight, his limbs moving in rhythmic perfection, a gait that would be the envy of any supermodel. He too walked away along the path, took a left turn and disappeared behind his brother into the woods.

There was absolute silence for a few moments, as we all soaked in and absorbed the intensity of what had just happened. And then all hell broke loose, excited chatter erupted in the jeep and the guide had to warn everyone to be silent as moved ahead into the Gir National Park.

But for most of us, our purpose for visiting the Gir National Park had been served. We were thrilled out of our wits.

Beautiful Landscapes of Gir National Park

Sasan Gir Safari

Yes, the sighting of wild animals is why most of us visit the forests and National Parks. But apart from this the sheer natural beauty that the landscapes offer is a treasure in itself. The Gir National Park too has a pristine and wild beauty that is so endearing.

In the summer months, the forest is dry, but after the rainy season, the streams and watering holes are full, the trees topped with a green cover, and the animals at their happiest. We visited during the winter months and loved the spectacle that unveiled before us as we embarked upon our Gir National Park Safari.

The teak forests presented a beautiful sight as we weaved through the narrow path that cut across the jungle. The terrain is made up of rocky hills of volcanic origin, and water natural water bodies. Water from seven rivers flows into the Gir forest area. These are the Hiran, Saraswati, Datardi, Shinghoda, Raval, Ghodavadi, and Macchundri. To conserve the waters of these rivers four dams have been constructed.

Panoramic view of Gir National Park

We drove across a beautiful stretch of road that ran parallel to the waters of the Hiran river, close to the Kamleshwar Dam. There is a tall observation tower here that offers spectacular and panoramic views of the Gir National Park.

Wow! What an incredible experience! Life is so funny, you sign up for something that could be dreamy, start to get concerned it won’t happen for you, then get the best experience possible. I’m very jealous and this is going on my list!

It was good that your guide set your expectations about the possibility of not seeing lions. We have had luck on our safaris. But have talked to others that were not so lucky. I do know that feeling you got when you saw a lion on the road you were travelling. So thrilling to watch them walk past. And hoping they ignore you! What a great experience you had.

Oh my goodness! Your description in the beginning was so vivid – I felt like I was right there with you. And you’re right – seeing wild animals in their natural habitat really is beautiful and mesmerizing. What a lovely memory – and such gorgeous creatures.

I can only imagine what this experience must have been like for you! How lucky to have had such a close encounter with the lions–and I’m so glad they kept walking past. They sure made their point, didn’t they? I hung on each word of this story, waiting to learn what would happen in the next moment. Thrilled to see the video of the whole experience, too. Thanks for sharing this exciting moment, as well as all of the other helpful tips about Gir National Park. I’m a huge wildlife fan, so I hope one day to see it for myself.

I’ve never been on a safari before, so for me this is very interesting information. Having such an up-close encounter with the lions must be exciting, but quite intimidating. I had no idea that you can go on a safari two-three times in a row and not see what you came to see. That guy must have been really unlucky. Gir National Park will definitely go up on my list of places to see in India.

A safari is one thing I really would love to do one day but I am just waiting for my two younger children to be a little bit older, but when we do, its going to be amazing. I would love to be as close to the lions like you were. Just to see them staring at you (peacefully I may add) is an experience which you will never forget and this is something I would like to add to my life experiences.

Your experience reminded me of the time many years back when I have faced a number of lions during our open jeep safari in South Africa. It’s quite an experience. Haven’t been to Gir but got a feel through your experience.

that was such an amazing experience. the only time I got to experience a ‘safari’ was when we visited the cebu safari adventure park. It’s not really in the wild. we got to see white lions but it would be amazing if we could see them in the wild too.

Great post!! I have never paid much attention to the wildlife in Gujarat and it seems pretty amazing. The lions in Gujarat seems a bit different than the African lions. I would love to give wildlife in Gujarat a try too.

Wow what an incredible experience and I am glad, unlike your tour guides previous client, you actually got to see lions! I’m yet to go on a safari or even to India so this was very interesting reading. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

Thanks for sharing such an informative post about Sasan Gir safari. After reading your entire page thing I liked most is adding an FAQ in the end. Thanks once again.

EXPERIENCE THE TRANQUILITY

Asiatic lions are one of the rarest of all the big cat species in the world. These beasts ranged across the lands of the bible and devoured Christians in Roman arenas. Once found across South Asia from Mesopotamia all the way down to Central India, now they are confined to the dry forests of Gir National Park and Sanctuary making it the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

Gir National Park is located in the erstwhile estate of Junagadh in the Southern part of the North-west Indian state of Gujarat. During the British Raj and East India Company Rule, the kings of princely states across India invited and held hunting expeditions for British Colonists and royal guests. Around the early 1900s, this caused the population to plummet and barely a dozen lions were left in the wild, all of them in Gir. The Asiatic Lion became locally extinct all over India except in Junagadh. The concerns to protect the species rose and the forests of Gir were brought under protection by the Nawab of Junagadh in the second half of the 20th century.

Presently, an estimated population of 523 lions calls an area of 1412 sq. km., their home which comprises the National Park and Sanctuary. But the actual habitat spreads across 4 districts – Junagadh, Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar – covering an area of over 22,000 sq. km.

The Experience

Wildlife safaris in Gir National Park are scheduled to take place twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Each session is for around 3 hours. During our previous tours in Gir, we have had 100% success in finding Asiatic Lions. In Sasan Gir, we work with an experienced team of drivers and naturalists whose experiences are key in helping our guests live their dream of photographing Asiatic Lions. From tracking to positioning the vehicles, they are the best in getting you to the right place at the right moment.

Photographing Asiatic Lions in Gir is not so challenging given the fact that the Big Cats are not very shy. During the dry season in Gir, the forests shed their leaves and the visibility improves, further contributing to better wildlife photography and viewing. The Asiatic Lions are comparatively smaller than their African cousins. While tigers and lions don’t co-exist, the park has a healthy population of Leopards. With an extra streak of luck, the rare striped Hyena could be ticked off your list.

Though there are numerous lodges and hotels in Gir, we at The Wildside have partnered with a few lodges in Gir offering top-notch services to our guests. From being located close to the park to having good facilities, our selection of lodges in Gir stands out from the rest. It is the ideal retreat to retire after a long day of safaris in the park. The lodge’s kitchens bring to the table some of the most delicious dishes from the North Indian and Continental cuisine as well. All rooms are air-conditioned with ensuite facilities and some even offer spectacular views of the surrounding forests.

Additional Info

Reaching gir.

Gir is well connected with a number of airports in the Southern Part of Gujarat. Rajkot, located about 3 hours away from the park has the maximum frequency of domestic flights connecting India’s metro cities. The other airports include Diu, Porbandar and Jamnagar. Ahmedabad (AMD) is the nearest International Airport to Gir National Park.

Gir National Park remains open from October to June and remains closed from July to September due to the monsoon. The park is dense and green when the doors open in Oct0ber. As February draws to an end, the park is dry with increased visibility thus providing a higher possibility of Wildlife Sightings. The summer months of April, May and June are excellent for wildlife viewing as the heat draws all the animals to the remaining pools of water.

The prides here have grown to perceive little threat from humans, which makes them far more comfortable around within your vicinity. Not only is Gir a teeming habitat for these regal beings, it is also a conducive for Leopards, Sambar and Chital Deer, and the Four Horned Antelope. Take an extension to Sasan Gir, teeming with a glorious Tiger safari tour in western India, like a Tiger Safari In Ranthmabore National Park or even a Birding tour in Bharatpur, Kutch and more.

Fern Gir Forest Resort 3

Day 2 : In Sasan Gir

Morning and afternoon jeep safari to the National Park. Breakfast and lunch at the lodge are included.

Gir is the only home in India for the Asiatic Lion, with a populationof over 600. The Gir National Park lies in the Gujarat peninsula in South-Western India. The terrain is rugged with low hills and the vegetation is mixed deciduous, with stands of Teak, Acacia, Jamun, Tendu and Dhak trees, interspersed with large patches of grasslands. The trees on the hills are sparse and stunted. Within the sanctuary there are numerous human settlements of cattle herders called Maldharis with an estimated 20,000 head of livestock (which, incidentally, forms a significant part of the Lion’s diet). There are also places of Hindu worship and pilgrimage and sulphur springs at Tulsi Shyam and Kankai Mata. The edges of the park have a good population of Indian Gazelle, which are protected by the religious sentiments of the local people. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 3 : In Sasan Gir

Morning and afternoon safaris to the National Park. Meals at the lodge are included.

The largest compact tract of dry deciduous forest in the country, protected as Gir National Park and Sanctuary, covers an area of 1412 sq km in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. Gir has evolved to host a very stable ecosystem with tremendous regenerating, self-supporting and self- sustaining capacity due to its richness of biodiversity: 606 different plant species, 39 species of mammals, 37 species of reptiles and over 300 species of birds and more than 2,000 species of insects.

A breeding ground for migratory birds, the avifauna of Gir includes a variety of raptors and many other significant species, including Lesser Florican, Osprey, Indian Pitta, Red-headed Vulture, etc. It also supports a variety of reptiles, including the Indian python and the Indian star tortoise, and possibly one of the highest populations of Marsh crocodile in the country. Gir also has one of the densest concentrations of leopards in India. The park is therefore a great place to see Leopards as well, with a population of over 400 individuals that inhabit the area.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

With the monsoon more or less behind us (discounting the recent unseasonal showers), national parks across India have opened shop for the safari season. The lush jungles beckon, teeming with flora and fauna, and the promise of a tranquil stay—not to forget a big cat sighting if you’re lucky. From Corbett and Kaziranga to Kanha and Kabini, here is Vogue's edit of the most luxurious jungle lodges that make the perfect base for enthralling wildlife safaris.

Banjaar Tola, Kanha

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Located along the banks of the Banjar River overlooking the heart of Kanha National Park, Banjaar Tola offers an unparalleled Taj Safaris experience. Two intimate camps, each with nine tented suites and a private pool, are spread over 90 acres of sal forest. Ensuite tents feature bamboo floors, handcrafted driftwood furniture, Gondi artwork and Bastar bell metalwork, and wide glass doors opening onto private decks with river views. Get a taste of local tribal cuisine in scenic outdoor dining settings.

Diphlu River Lodge

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

If it’s good enough for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, it’s good enough for us. Perched on the fringe of Kaziranga National Park, Diphlu River Lodge offers 12 semi-detached cottages . Inspired by the architecture of local Mishing tribal homes, the cottages are raised on stilts and made of bamboo and wood, topped with thatched roofs. Head out on a jeep safari to spot the one-horned rhinoceros or hop on board a specially designed country boat that cruises down the Brahmaputra where you might catch a glimpse of the endangered Gangetic dolphins.

Evolve Back Kuruba Safari Lodge, Kabini

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Inspired in design by the Hadis (hamlets) or tribal villages, the picturesque Evolve Back Kuruba Safari Lodge is bordered on two sides by the Kabini River. Splurge on the Pool Reserve Hut, which comes with lavish living areas, an indulgent bathroom, a temperature-controlled pool and a unique Star Bed (an open-air berth that’s perfect for stargazing). The resort offers jeep safaris in Nagarhole National Park, boat safaris on the Kabini River and even a ride down the river on a traditional round boat called a coracle.

Jim’s Jungle Retreat, Corbett

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Soak in the forest experience at Jim’s Jungle Retreat located on the periphery of Jim Corbett National Park. 18 independent cottages channel the architectural style of the local pastoral Van Gujjar tribe with a generous sprinkling of British Raj flair. We recommend the Jungle Lodge, which offers spectacular views at a 15-foot elevation. Experiences include jeep safaris, cycling expeditions, heritage walks and even an overnight stay in the forest. After a long safari, lounge by the pool, relax in the library or rejuvenate yourself in the jungle spa.

Pench Tree Lodge, Pench

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Pench in Madhya Pradesh is quintessential Jungle Book territory where, like Mowgli, you can run into Shere Khan (the tiger) and Baloo (the sloth bear). And Pugdundee Safaris’ Pench Tree Lodge with six treehouses and luxury cottages is the ideal base for your adventures. Perched at 18 feet above the ground, the spacious treehouses are made of local sal wood and come with a private sit-out deck and bay window lounger. Pench National Park is only 20 minutes away; apart from jungle safaris, there’s a host of activities to choose from like cycling, night trails , village walks and more.

Reni Pani Jungle Lodge, Satpura

Image may contain Interior Design Indoors Building Furniture Bed Housing Hotel Home Decor Room Bedroom and Wood

Live amidst true wilderness at Reni Pani Jungle Lodge, located in the Satpura National Park & Tiger Reserve. This exquisitely designed conservation and wildlife-focused lodge allows you to choose from 12 cottages and four luxury tents, all of which come with the creature comforts you’d expect. To really immerse yourself in nature, book one of the tents where you can observe animals as they drink from a nearby waterhole. Apart from jeep and motorboat excursions, you can also opt for walking, canoeing, cycling and camping safaris.

Sujan Jawai, Jawai Bandh

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Dramatic granite rock formations make a spectacular backdrop for Sujan Jawai, a luxury wilderness camp that blends sophistication with ecology. The 10 tented suites have been recently upgraded and the new ensuite bathrooms now include a bathtub and a marble shower. For ultimate privacy, book the new Eden at Jawai, a two double-bedroom suite with a private entrance, jeep and butler, as well as a heated pool and a large deck. Track leopards on wilderness drives, explore the landscape on horseback and immerse yourself in the local culture on a guided walk with the Rabari tribespeople.

The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort, Ranthambore

8 jungle lodges for the best safari experiences in India

Ranthambore National Park is one of the best places in India to spot a tiger and The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort offers a luxurious setting for this experience. Spacious tents come with teak wood floors, king beds, plush armchairs, claw-footed bathtubs and private gardens. Head out on an exciting jungle drive to track tigers or on a Chambal river safari to spot crocodiles. Experience a rejuvenating spa session and then wind down with a sundowner at the observation tower.

Gir National Park

About gir national park.

Sasan Gir or Gir National Park is considered as the ‘Pride’ of Gujrat. It is the last bastion of the Asiatic Lions on Planet Earth. Unlike your typical African savannah,Gir National Parkinhabits a landscape enclosed within rugged hills, forested valleys and dotted with grasslands and open scrubland. Though, the vegetation here isn’t particularly dense; it maintains an ecological haven that serves as a sanctum for the last remaining population of one of the world’s largest cats.

The prides of Lions here have grown accustomed to live in the proximity of humans, which makes them far more comfortable in the vicinity of safari vehicles as well. Not only is Gir National Park a thriving habitat for these regal beings, it is also extremely conducive for Leopards, Golden Jackals, Sambar and Chital Deer, the Four Horned Antelope, Nilgai and Chinkara.

Gir National Park also exhibits immense bird diversity too, with species such as the White Bellied Minivet, Painted Francolin, Painted and Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Marshall’s Iora, Indian Paradise Flycatcher, Rufous Fronted Prinia, Great Tit, Rufous-bellied and Yellow-eyed Babblers, Blackheaded Cuckooshrike, Black Hooded Oriole, Brown Capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Lesser Goldenback, along with Plum Headed Parakeets to name a few.

Gir National Park is also well known for the owls and birds of prey such as Mottled Wood Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Indian Eagle Owl, Spotted and Jungle Owlet, Bonelli’s Eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Tawny Eagle and Eastern Imperial Eagle.

When we think of the Asiatic Lion in particular, the species that was once on the brink of extinction has gradually gained numbers over the last 30 years. The lion has always been known for its title, ‘The King of the Jungle’. However, in the last century, they have faced threats in the form of habitat loss, poaching, interbreeding, and disease.

Despite this glaring peril, there has been a gradual rise in numbers by nearly 30% in the last 5 years. Not only have their numbers gone up, but their home range has extended from 22,000 sq km to 30,000 sq km in the 9 districts of the Saurashtra region. To witness this surge in these regal beings, there is no better place than Gir National Park to undertake a quest to see the highly sociable Big Cats of India.

If you ask about the best time to visit this National Park, the Gir National park stands closed from June to October every year, however, the best time to head out for a safari in this national park stands between the months of December – March. And if the months of April and May are taken into consideration, the climate during these months stands very hot but, these are considered as the best months for wildlife viewing and photography.

A hilly area of arid scrubland is where Gir National Park is situated, around 37 miles (60 km) south-southwest of Junagadh in Gujarat state, west-central India. It covers around 500 square miles of land (1,295 square km). Teak dominates the vegetation, with thorn forests, sal (Shorea robusta), dhak (Butea frondosa), and other deciduous trees mixed in.

A sanctuary designation was given to the Gir Forests Reserve in 1965. The reserve was established in 1913 to safeguard the largest of the remaining populations of Asiatic lions. Since it was founded, the sanctuary has produced hundreds of Asiatic lions. Visitors can frequently attend “lion shows,” which are essentially protected car trips. Leopards, wild pigs, spotted deer, nilgai (a species of antelope), four-horned antelopes, and chinkaras are among the other animals (a type of gazelle). A few crocodiles are present in a sizable centre water hole. Near the Tulsi-Shyam Springs is a modest Krishna shrine in the park.
