Taylor Swift

The eras tour, olympic stadium.

Taylor Swift

She is an absolute world star, winner of numerous awards, whether Grammys, Billboard or MTV Awards. Her albums and single hits have sold millions worldwide, and in 2022 she set a unique record in the American charts. In 2024, Taylor Swift will also come to Munich as part of her "The Eras Tour" - for two open-air concerts on 27 and 28 July at the Olympic Stadium.

It was a sensational record that Taylor Swift achieved at the end of October 2022 in the 64-year history of the Billboard Hot 100, when she took all the places from 1 to 10. Ten songs in the Top 10? No one had ever done that before her. It came as little surprise that her newly released album "Midnight" also reached the top position in the album charts at the same time. And the fact that she surpassed Madonna (38) as the most successful top ten artist with a total of 40 hits was another record.

She also achieved a personal premiere in Germany in 2022, when her tenth studio album reached No. 1 in the German longplayer ranking for the first time. Another debut will come in the summer of 2024: for the first time in her career, Taylor Swift, who would be named "Woman of the Decade" by Billboard Women in Music in 2019, will play in Munich. After having to cancel her concert in the Olympic Hall, once scheduled for March 2011, due to scheduling conflicts, she will now come under the tent roof for a double open air - at two performances on 27 and 28 July. Taylor Swift live in the stadium - guaranteed to be a highlight of the Munich summer of 2024.

How To Get Taylor Swift Eras Tour International Tickets Abroad

Ticketmaster, “why you gotta be so mean?”

International Swifties, now is your turn to experience the dramatic saga that is trying to acquire Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets. It’s not an easy feat by any means, especially when Ticketmaster is involved. Swift first announced international dates for her Eras Tour in June, which includes cities in Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to the announcement, Swift also shared that registration for those dates had opened up. Unfortunately, the deadline to sign up to be a “verified fan” and receive a code to purchase tickets on Ticketmaster has long since passed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get international tickets to Swift’s Eras Tour another way.

Just like there are many avenues (albeit some expensive ones) to buy last-minute Eras Tour tickets , there are ways to get tickets to potentially see Swift sing “Paris” in Paris or “London Boy” in London. The only problem is Ticketmaster has put into place a new set of rules for international Eras Tour tickets that involve a “lead booker” policy . This stipulation added onto Swift tickets has definitely made getting them a lot harder. You might be wondering, what is the Ticketmaster lead booker policy? Well, it’s the company’s solution to the issue of resellers. U.S. Swifties have had to deal with scalpers and non-fans buying up tickets to the Eras Tour, and reselling them for an exorbitant amount. For example, tickets in the same row that I paid $250 for at face value are now going for almost $1,600 on StubHub — and that’s just the lowest price. The most expensive are listed for $9,500.

To try and avoid this type of highway robbery, Ticketmaster’s lead booker policy makes it so the tickets purchased are non-transferable — meaning you can’t resell them on a site like StubHub. Instead, the person who bought these tickets must be present at the show to use them. This makes tickets bought as presents unusable unless the person who bought them is there to present “a valid photo ID matching the customer name on the booking confirmation and the credit card.” Groups must also “enter the venue at the same time.” These strict rules may make it easier for Eras Tour tickets to fall into the hands of only Swifties, but it also makes it almost impossible for you to get international Eras Tour tickets without a presale code. However, there is a bit of hope.

Can You Get Resale Taylor Swift Eras Tour International Tickets?

International Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets are non-transferable and have a lead booker policy, whi...

Lead booker rules are put into place not just for the UK shows, but all international dates, including France , Sweden , and Japan . Most countries, though, state that these rules can change, and “resale may become available at some point.” According to Ticketmaster, the decision to not have resale activated is a choice of the “organizer” — aka Swift’s team. It’s possible if enough Swifties complain about the lead booker rules, Eras Tour tickets will become available for resale. After the Eras Tour Ticketmaster fiasco of 2022 , Swift shared a lengthy (and angry) statement about the mishandling of the sale . Swift, who is “extremely protective” of her fans, was rightfully pissed about the situation, so it’s possible she’ll make things right with international Swifties as well.

If they allow for the resale of Eras Tour tickets, you’ll be able to find those listed on Ticketmaster and potentially other sites like StubHub. The best solution IMHO is allowing for resale tickets, but capping the price at face value so that fans can only get back the money they spent and other Swifties don’t have to decide if they’d rather pay rent for a month or see Swift sing “Cruel Summer” IRL. Until Ticketmaster makes a change to their policy, BDG’s Senior Newsletter Editor Hayley Schueneman — who got tickets to see Swift in France — says, “I would be leery of people saying they can sell you international tickets!”

Will There Be A General Sale For Taylor Swift Eras Tour International Tickets?

Similar to how Eras Tour tickets have been selling in the U.S., you need a fan code in order to actually get in the queue to buy tickets. While presales have begun, some cities are opening up general sales to more verified fans who were put on the waitlist. However, these fans still need a code that’s linked to their Ticketmaster account in order to buy them. This means if you missed the deadline to register for Eras Tour tickets, you won’t be able to purchase general sale tickets.

The public sale for Eras Tour in the U.S. was canceled due to the high demand, and that seems to be the case internationally as well. A lot of fans have also been saying on TikTok that they’ve been taken off the waitlist , but the only tickets still remaining are the VIP packages to Eras Tour since those are the most expensive. It’s possible that if Ticketmaster decides to open up their sales to the general public, all that will be left are VIP packages.

Pretty much, the sales for Eras Tour 2024 tickets are looking to be just as dramatic and confusing as the U.S. Right now, all you can hope for is that Ticketmaster drops their lead booker policy, they open up sales to the general public, or you find a friend in Europe, Asia, or Australia with an extra ticket who would be willing to go to the show with you. Of course, you could also mastermind a friendship with Swift so she invites you into the Eras Tour VIP tent — but that’s going to take a little more manifesting to happen .

Thousands of Taylor Swift fans are following her across the pond after missing out on her U.S. concert tour last year or being put off by marked-up ticket prices.

LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her U.S. concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

The pop star is scheduled to kick off the 18-city Europe leg of her record-setting Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, and planeloads of Swifties plan to follow Miss Americana across the pond in the coming weeks. The arena where Swift is appearing said Americans bought 20% of the tickets for her four sold-out shows. Stockholm, the tour’s next stop, expects about 10,000 concertgoers from the U.S.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+. Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé's Renaissance world tour .

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home .

“They said, ’Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,” Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert, said.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz beams while holding up the so-called Taylor Swift bill he signed into law as lawmakers, First Avenue employees and online ticket buyers clap Tuesday, May 7, 2024, inside the First Avenue concert venue in Minneapolis. The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift's 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket for live events held in Minnesota, among other measures. That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the U.S. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

AP AUDIO: Fans are following Taylor Swift to Europe after finding Eras Tour tickets less costly there

AP correspondent Jennifer King reports Taylor Swift is heading to Europe, and her U.S. fans are following.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

The three VIP tickets she secured close to the stage — “I would call it brute-force dumb luck” — cost 600 euros ($646) each. Swift subsequently announced six November tour dates in Toronto, within driving distance of Warren’s home. “Absolute nose-bleed seats” already are going for 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194) on secondary resale sites like Viagogo, Warren said.

TOUR TOURISM: IS IT REALLY A THING?

Hard-core fans trailing their favorite singer or band on tour is not a new phenomenon. “Groupie” emerged in the late 1960s as a somewhat derogatory word for the ardent followers of rock bands. Deadheads took to the road in the 1970s to pursue the Grateful Dead from city to city.

More recently, music festivals like California’s Coachella and England’s Glastonbury, and concert residencies in Las Vegas by the likes of Elton John, Lady Gaga and Adele, have attracted travelers to places they wouldn’t otherwise visit, Fish noted.

Travel and entertainment analysts have also spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) radius of concert venues in the U.S. cities she visited in 2023. The U.S. dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in L.A. last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland, too. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” said Hale, who is pregnant with her first child.

FOR STOCKHOLM, 120,000 SWIFTIES CAN’T BE WRONG

The local economic impact of what the zeitgeist has termed “Swiftonomics” and the “Swift lift” can be considerable . It’s no wonder the exclusive arrangement Singapore’s government made with Swift to make the city-state her only tour stop in Southeast Asia earlier this year aroused regional jealousy .

No European governments have complained of their countries not being among the dozen selected for the Europe leg of the Eras Tour, although some fans have expressed surprise that Gelsenkirchen, a city with a population of about 264,000 is one of the three cities in Germany that made the cut.

Airbnb reported Tuesday that searches on its platform for the U.K. cities where Swift is performing in June and August — Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London — increased an average of 337% when tickets went on sale last summer.

Not to be outdone when it comes to trend-spotting, the property rentals company cited the demand as an example of “passion tourism,” or travel “driven by concerts, sports and other cultural events.”

In Stockholm , 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries -- among them 10,000 from the U.S. — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

“So this is going to be huge for the tourism sector in Sweden and Stockholm in particular,” Bergqvist said.

Nightclubs, restaurants and bars are seizing the opportunity to cater to fans with Taylor Swift-themed events, such as karaoke, quizzes and after-concert dance parties.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, saw Swift more than a year ago when the Eras Tour came to the Texas city. Now she’s making more friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3 1/2-hour show in Stockholm. The idea of seeing Swift in Europe was her friend’s, and Matlock needed some persuading at first.

“I was like, ‘I only want to go if it’s a country I haven’t been to. I’ve seen Taylor Swift,’” she said.

Visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg is on their itinerary. The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

WILL TOUR TOURISM ENDURE AFTER ERAS?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and Beyoncé's, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

“It may just shift it a little bit. A person was going to go to the Caribbean for a week vacation. Instead that person (says), ‘Let’s travel to the Taylor Swift thing,’” Fogel said. “It doesn’t increase it. It just moves it from here to there.”

AP journalists Colleen Barry in Milan, Chisato Tanaka in Stockholm, Anne D’Innocenzio in New York, David Koenig in Dallas, Thomas Adamson in Paris and Brian Melley in London contributed reporting.

How to get tickets to international shows on Taylor Swift’s 'Eras Tour'

The “Shake It Off” singer’s fan base infamously crashed Ticketmaster when they overcrowded the system while trying to buy tickets when they went live on Nov. 15, 2022. Since then, the platform has employed a new ticket purchasing process that has kept crashes at bay — so far.

The new purchasing multi-step process first requires pre-registration in order to be eligible for pre-sales and regular sales. However, pre-sales and registration are closed for all current international tour dates.

Fans who are interested in attending an international show can try purchasing tickets on reseller sites such as StubHub and SeatGeek.

Taylor Swift's reign continues as she ramps up for the next leg of The Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her recent Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift will release her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, so the Swiftie hype will continue this spring.

Getting tickets has become its own battle and many fans have waited hours in the Ticketmaster queue to hopefully snag some seats, if they could get a presale ticket code in the first place. While Swift continues to extend the tour, including new US dates, tickets remain hard to come by.

Below, we've put together a guide on everything to know about The Eras Tour, including the tour schedule, ticket purchasing details, resale ticket prices, and the concert film streaming options . You can also peruse resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Taylor Swift international tour dates

The Eras Tour international dates resume on May 9 in Paris. The European tour will run until August 20 in London. UK prices are listed in pounds, and start times vary from city to city. Multiple shows have age restrictions for younger kids and specifics on seating and adult accompaniment. US dates start in October and can be found under the following table.

Taylor Swift North American tour dates

The Eras tour will return to the US on October 18 in Miami. In addition to the Miami shows, Swift will perform multiple dates in New Orleans and Indianapolis. On November 14, Swift will head to Canada for several shows in Toronto and Vancouver. All North American shows start at 7 p.m. local time.

How to buy tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 tour

Original standard tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 sold out long ago for both international and domestic dates. All US tickets and many international tickets were sold through Ticketmaster , although select international locations used different services.

Tickets for most dates are available on resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . These are generally higher-priced than the originals, which are no longer available. Keep in mind that some countries have rules regarding reselling tickets.

On StubHub, UK tour dates come with a note that ticket terms don't permit resale through unauthorized channels and might not be valid for entry. If this ends up being the case, StubHub notes that its FanProtect Guarantee will cover purchasers.

How much are Taylor Swift tickets?

Ticket prices vary by date and location. International resale tickets tend to be a bit cheaper than US resale tickets. It's worth noting that some of the cheapest tickets have restricted views.

StubHub's cheapest European tickets range from $311 (Madrid, Spain, on May 29) to £916 (London, England on August 19). The latter is around $1,139 in USD. The lowest prices for most shows are around $450 to $1,000. On Vivid Seats , the cheapest tickets for these dates go for $455 and $819, respectively.

When it comes to North American shows, the cheapest StubHub tickets range from $1,228 (Vancouver, Canada, on December 8) to $2,125 (Indianapolis, Indiana on November 1). Most of the cheapest tickets are priced between $1,200 and $2,000. On Vivid Seats, the cheapest Taylor Swift tickets on these dates start at $1,249 and $1,995, respectively. The two resale vendors generally have similarly priced offerings, but this varies from show to show.

Taylor Swift has a variety of opening acts, from up-and-coming singers to established groups. Opening acts vary by date. For the European leg of the tour, Paramore will open for Swift. In the US and Canada, Gracie Abrams will be the opening act.

Will Taylor Swift add more dates to the Eras Tour?

Taylor Swift has already added additional stops to her tour due to popular demand, including her US tour dates this fall. She also added additional dates to some of her European city stops, including bonus performances in France and the United Kingdom, among other locations. It's unknown whether Swift will end up adding even more tour dates, but by the end of the upcoming US leg she will have been touring for almost two years, so fans shouldn't be surprised if she takes a break.

Will The Tortured Poets Department be a part of the Eras Tour?

There's no word yet on whether "The Tortured Poets Department" will become its own era on the Eras Tour, or if any songs from the album will be performed during Swift's upcoming concerts. The concert is already about 3 hours and 15 minutes long, so it might be hard to add a full era to the setlist, but the surprise song portion of the show allows for some wiggle room. We'll keep this updated once the album comes out and the tour commences in May and let you know whether any TTPD tunes have made their way into Swift's concerts.

Why Are Taylor Swift Eras Tour Tickets So Much Cheaper in Europe?

Tickets for Swift's 51 shows overseas are 87 percent cheaper than her remaining U.S. shows, providing a model for how to keep prices low in the States.

Taylor Swift Wears Kansas City Chiefs Colors at Paris Eras Show With Travis Kelce in the Audience

Trending on billboard.

That means a fan in Miami could fly to Paris for about $900 a person (according to prices generated on kayak.com), spend two nights at a four-star hotel at $250 a night and purchase a $340 concert ticket for a grand total of $1,740 — which is still $760 less than the cheapest tickets currently available for her Miami shows.

Tickets to see Swift in Stockholm (May 17-19) are even cheaper, at $312 for the cheapest tickets, while tickets for her show in Portugal (May 24-25) start at $336 and in Spain (May 29-30) start at $324. Prices do start to climb in the United Kingdom, with the get-in-the-door price hovering around £540 (about $674 USD) for Swift’s Liverpool shows (June 13-15). Prices to see Swift at Wembley Stadium (June 21-23) hover around £720 ($900).

The reason for the huge difference in price, experts say, is due in part to longstanding consumer skepticism about resale tickets in most of Europe. That’s coupled with a much more aggressive regulatory environment where artists and consumers are empowered to report and remove illegal ticket listings, and where prices are kept low thanks to laws limiting how high tickets can be marked up over face value.

Sam Shemtob , managing director for ticket resale advocacy group Face-value European Alliance for Ticketing (FEAT), points to Europe as a model for how governments can be more vigilant about regulating resale markets. In countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands, ticket resellers face limits on how much tickets can be marked up on secondary sites — typically 20% over face value. Other countries like the United Kingdom allow resale but restrict who is allowed to post tickets for resale and give artists and event promoters the right to take some resale ticket listings down.

Adopting European-style regulations in the United States by restricting ticket markups to 20% above face value would transform the concert business overnight and likely drive prices down dramatically on the secondary market. Markup caps would also likely make programs like Ticketmaster’s platinum ticket pricing (which charges high markups for a small percentage of tickets to offset the resale market) obsolete and significantly reduce the number of ticket brokers and bad actors using bots to disrupt ticket sales and illegally buy up tickets.

Shemtob notes that Europe’s ticketing rules aren’t just about protecting price, but are also designed to empower citizens to take action.

On Jan. 1, 2025, Europe’s Digital Services Act (DSA) will go into effect, creating a uniform set of guidelines for online ticket resale requiring resellers to disclose their names and contact details to potential ticket buyers. The DSA also mandates that resale platforms track takedowns of public ticket listings (to help provide a record of the deceptive activity taking place) and ban deceptive marketing practices.

While many of the DSA’s reforms mirror U.S. efforts to clean up ticketing, Shemtob says a provision in the DSA bill that makes it simple to flag, report and take down ticket listings that violate the rules is a game-changer for consumer advocates. The law creates “a clear process for removing illegal ticket listings as and when they appear,” he said in a statement provided to Billboard , putting in place “the groundwork for a fairer, more transparent ticket-buying experience for consumers.”

Besides keeping prices in Europe low, the legislation has also led to a surprising boom in tourism from U.S. fans traveling to the continent to pursue cheaper Eras Tour tickets: A spokesperson for StubHub told Billboard that 68% of ticket purchases for Swift’s 51-show run in Europe have come from U.S. buyers.

No, wait, they were really in Paris.

Taylor Swift is back on the road again on the Eras Tour, and she performed in Paris, France over the weekend. European Taylor Swift Fans Overwhelm Ticketmaster in Rush For Eras Tour Tickets

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 24: Taylor Swift performs onstage during the 2019 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on November 24, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Emma McIntyre/AMA2019/Getty Images for dcp)

Everyone knew getting tickets for Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour was going to be a challenge. But no one — especially not Ticketmaster, the platform responsible for distributing said tickets — seemed remotely aware of just how messy the process would turn out to be. Now, it seems the mess is getting even bigger for Ticketmaster, as the Senate is set to hold a hearing that could potentially lead to Ticketmaster and Live Nation being broken up as a company.

Swift first announced The Eras Tour on Nov. 1, 2022 , and added eight more dates on Nov. 4, 2022. Later, on July 5, 2023, she announced additional dates in Europe, including stops in France, Germany, and Portugal. The fact that some brides considered changing their wedding dates to attend the tour foreshadowed the chaos that would come when tickets finally went on sale.

Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program allows people to register in advance and gain access to presale tickets. According to The Verge , more than 3.5 million people registered for the program in preparation for Swift's tour — the largest registration in the site's history — and about 1.5 million were given access to the presale. However, according to Ticketmaster , bots and fans without invite codes flooded the site when the presale opened on Nov. 15, 2022, causing the site to crash repeatedly — and evoking extreme ire among Swifties. Fans complained of hours-long wait times that resulted in technical glitches, as well as presale phases that were rescheduled or canceled.

On Nov. 17, 2022, Ticketmaster announced that the general sale wouldn't open at all. "Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled," the company tweeted .

Soon after tickets first became available on Ticketmaster, they went on sale all over resale sites — selling for $400 to over $22,000, per The Guardian . Even some of the few who did initially get to purchase tickets may have paid more than they expected because of a dynamic pricing model.

On Nov. 18, 2022, Swift took to Instagram Stories to address the controversy, writing a long statement that read, in part, "There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I'm trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward." (Reps for Swift and Ticketmaster did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR's request for comment.) As of Dec. 3, 2022, fans have taken matters into their own hands and are preparing to sue Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, according to court documents obtained by Deadline .

On Dec. 12, 2022, an unknown number of fans who had been unable to purchase tickets through the Verified Fan program received an email that let them know they'd been given another chance, thanks to a request from Swift's team. "Congratulations, you have been selected to participate in a limited-time opportunity to request to purchase 2 tickets to Taylor Swift The Eras Tour," read the message, which some fans shared on social media . "You were selected for this opportunity because you have been identified as a fan who received a boost during the Verified Fan presale but did not purchase tickets," it continued. "We apologized for the difficulties you may have experienced, and have been asked by Taylor's team to create this additional opportunity for you to purchase tickets."

Months later, issues plagued Swift's additional round of European tour dates. On July 11, 2023, when fans logged into Ticketmaster to fight for tickets to Swift's six planned shows in France, they were met with an announcement that ticket sales had been postponed. "The 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Eras Tour for Paris La Défense Arena has been put on hold. We will keep you posted with a new on-sale time as soon as possible," Ticketmaster announced via Twitter . It added that "all codes not already used will remain valid."

Ahead, here's everything you need to know about how this all happened.

What Is Dynamic Pricing?

In the wake of the presale issues, fans took aim at dynamic pricing, which Swift has reportedly embraced . (Swift also used dynamic pricing for her 2018 tour — as did Bruce Springsteen for his 2023 tour, which led to tickets that cost over $5,000 .) Essentially, dynamic pricing means ticket prices can shift based on demand. "In some instances, events on our platform may have tickets that are 'market-priced,' so ticket and fee prices may adjust over time based on demand," Ticketmaster's FAQs read . "This is similar to how airline tickets and hotel rooms are sold and is commonly referred to as 'Dynamic Pricing.'" In the case of The Eras Tour, because of dynamic pricing, some fans were reportedly faced with tickets that cost thousands of dollars after waiting in line for hours, according to Paper .

Why Federal Lawmakers Are Taking Notice

Naturally, Swift fans were irate — but the debacle also caught the attention of federal lawmakers, with some calling for Ticketmaster to be investigated for violating antitrust laws.

"Daily reminder that Ticketmaster is a monopoly, it's merger with LiveNation should never have been approved, and they need to be reigned in," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Nov. 15.

"Taylor Swift's tour sale is a perfect example of how the Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger harms consumers by creating a near-monopoly," tweeted Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. He then went on to quote Swift, writing, "Consumers deserve better than this anti-hero behavior."

On Jan. 17, 2023, Reuters reported that the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the lack of competition in the ticketing industry on Jan. 24, 2023, called "That's The Ticket: Promoting Competition and Protecting Consumers in Live Entertainment" as a result of Swift's Eras tour ticketing fiasco.

"The issues within America's ticketing industry were made painfully obvious when Ticketmaster's website failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to purchase tickets for Taylor Swift's new tour, but these problems are not new," said Senator Amy Klobuchar about the issue. "We will examine how consolidation in the live entertainment and ticketing industries harms customers and artists alike." Klobuchar believes Ticketmaster and Live Nation Entertainment should be broken up by the Justice Department if any misconduct is uncovered through their investigation.

Ticketmaster's Controversial History Within the Live Music Market

Ticketmaster merged with Live Nation in 2010. Even before that, Ticketmaster was the largest ticket sales platform in the United States, per a report from Northeastern University , and its merger with the world's largest concert promoter meant that the site has maintained a veritable stronghold on concert tickets. Today, according to the report, ticket prices are higher than ever before, and the platform's service fees can nearly equal the prices of some tickets.

Before Ticketmaster and Live Nation took over, the live music business was more locally managed. "There was this history of regional promoters, regional markets, which really paid attention to the regional genres and music scenes," said David Herlihy, coordinator of Northeastern's music industry program. But Ticketmaster started becoming more powerful during the Clinton era, when the government loosened some of its policies on media acquisitions .

Artists have been fighting back against Ticketmaster since as early as 1994, when the band Pearl Jam filed a civil complaint with the Justice Department in response to the platform's excess fees, leading to an investigation that went nowhere, per the Independent . Subsequently, the band went on tour and played only non-Ticketmaster affiliated venues, but finding these venues was a challenge, and major cities like New York were near impossible to book. As a result, the tour was extremely expensive for the band, and they eventually returned to Ticketmaster.

Ticketmaster has also been in trouble more recently. In January 2023, the site was hit with a class-action lawsuit for "predatory and exclusionary conduct," with lawyers for the plaintiffs arguing that Ticketmaster was withholding artists from venues not using Ticketmaster as their primary sales platform, per Rolling Stone , despite previously agreeing not to .

Now, Swift fans are calling for Ticketmaster's demise. "ticketmaster owns livenation, seatgeek, iheartradio, sirius xm, pandora radio, and several stadiums like a tweet from taylor alone isn't gonna fix this," one Twitter user wrote . Others celebrated young fans' sudden interest in monopolies. "Swifties being radicalized against monopolies and getting ready to do some anti-trust lobbying good luck ticketmaster," writer Elamin Abdelmahmoud tweeted .

What Actions Are Being Taken Against Ticketmaster?

On Dec. 3, 2022, Deadline obtained documents that revealed that over two dozen fans of Swift are preparing to sue Live Nation Entertainment, arguing that Ticketmaster had violated the Cartwright Act and Unfair Competition Law, and accusing them of fraud, misrepresentation and fraudulent inducement. "Based on information and belief, Ticketmaster has effectuated this anticompetitive scheme by forcing fans of musicians to exclusively use Ticketmaster for presale and sales prices, which are above what a competitive market price would be," the lawsuit alleges, arguing that the website "intentionally and purposefully mislead ticket purchasers" by allowing "scalpers and bots" into the presale.

Additionally, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is the chair of the Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights, has announced her intention to take action against Ticketmaster. "Ticketmaster's power in the primary ticket market insulates it from the competitive pressures that typically push companies to innovate and improve their services," she wrote on her website , adding she had sent a letter to Ticketmaster President and CEO Michael Rapino expressing her worries.

Meanwhile, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti has also declared that he is looking into Ticketmaster, per ABC . "We have received complaints about the sale process, and we have previously looked into antitrust allegations involving Ticketmaster and Live Nation. We want to make sure that there are no issues here that merit legal response," he said at a Nov. 16, 2022, press conference.

According to The New York Times , Ticketmaster is also currently being investigated by the Justice Department, though the outlet said the investigation predates the Eras Tour ticketing issues.

The youth activism organization Voters of Tomorrow has also launched its own antitrust initiative, called Swifties Working to Increase Fairness from Ticketmaster — also known as S.W.I.F.T. "We know all too well what happens when big corporations control high-profit industries like ticket sales: consumers suffer," the organization tweeted . "Now that they've brought Taylor into this, they're going to see just how angry we are."

Has Taylor Swift Addressed the Ticketmaster Controversy?

In a statement shared on her Instagram Story on Nov. 18 , 2022, Swift addressed the week's events.

"Well. It goes without saying that I'm extremely protective of my fans. We've been doing this for decades together and over the years, I've brought so many elements of my career in house," she wrote. "I've done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans' experience by doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do. It's really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse."

She continued: "There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I'm trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward. I'm not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could. It's truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them. And to those who didn't get tickets, all I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for us all to get together and sing these songs. Thank you for wanting to be there. You have no idea how much that means."

Swift is also taking action to make sure angry fans get their due. As of Dec. 12, 2022, a select number of fans who had initially attempted to buy tickets received a note from Ticketmaster letting them know that they'd have another shot — all thanks to Swift, of course. "We apologize for the difficulties you may have experienced, and have been asked by Taylor's team to create this additional opportunity for you to purchase tickets," the message read. The note added that fans would be able to purchase tickets sometime before Dec. 23, 2022, with opportunities issued based on tour dates, and promised that more information was on the way.

Taylor Swift's European Eras Tour leg kicked off in Paris with a new setlist. See which songs are in and out.

May 9, 2024 / 8:24 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Taylor Swift fever struck Paris on Thursday as the highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe, with fans treated to the first-ever performance of songs from her latest album.

The Eras Tour began its European leg with four dates at the La Defense Arena in Paris.

"I wish I could have toured Europe more. This is a dream crowd," the 34-year-old megastar told the ecstatic audience.

There were deafening shrieks as images of typewriter sheets indicated that songs off the new album "The Tortured Poets Department" were starting late in the show.

Emerging in a lyrics-covered dress, she ran through several of the darker new tracks starting with "But Daddy I Love Him" and "Fortnight", a particularly furious rendition of "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" and an elaborate "I Can Do it with a Broken Heart," with a golden-era Hollywood dance routine.

Other "The Tortured Poets Department" songs performed included "So High School," "Down Bad" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," according to ETonline .

"You were the first crowd to see songs from 'The Tortured Poets Department'," she said, before adding: "Or, as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: the Musical.'"

That was a dream come true for many in the audience.

"I've been so excited for so long, I can't believe it's actually happening," said 11-year-old Emma, who had flown in with her mother from New York.

Adding songs from "The Tortured Poets Department" wasn't the only change to the show and its 45-song setlist.

Perhaps the biggest change, according to ETonline, is the "Folklore" and "Evermore" setlists were combined, cutting four songs across the two albums: "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1" and "The Last Great American Dynasty."

"On the Eras Tour, we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," Swift said, according to video posted to social media. "You can call it "Folklore, Evermore" or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."

"The Archer" was removed from the "Lovers" portion of the show and "Long Live" was cut from the "Speak Now" era setlist, according to ETonline.

One of the secret songs was, fittingly, the "Midnights" bonus track "Paris."

Parts of the show were also rearranged to make room for the newest era. The "Red" era was moved from the fifth to the third slot, according to ETonline, and the newest album was introduced following the "1989" set.

The venue said a fifth of the crowd were from the United States — many attracted by Europe's rules against charging huge mark-ups on resale tickets that can save Americans thousands of dollars compared with shows at home.

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the Paris show. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift," she told AFP.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday in Paris to ensure they got a prime spot.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts — he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

After wrapping up her run in Paris, Swift will head for dates in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Poland and Austria.

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swift's popularity shows no sign of dimming — the new album sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record , reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been poring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment. "I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences."

They Couldn’t Afford Taylor Swift Tickets in America. So They Flew to France

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Last summer, Wenfei Xie, a doctor from Kansas City, Missouri, went to see Taylor Swift in her hometown. She met a fellow Swiftie at the show who had reached out to Paris La Défense Arena in France to purchase tickets to Swift’s four-night stand. The fan had been shocked to learn that tickets cost significantly lower than in the U.S. Xie booked a VIP suite for herself and a few college friends, but her overseas travel plans quickly spiraled. Ultimately, Xie arranged for 12 VIP suites over three nights for a total of 291 people, many of whom are members of a Facebook group for physicians.

Xie, who began planning the trip last summer with numerous spreadsheets to keep track of all the attendees, didn’t profit off the endeavor. Each person paid €1,700 (around $1,834) face value for suite access that includes food, champagne, and private bathrooms. By comparison, suite tickets for Swift’s concerts in Miami or New Orleans are currently selling for $5,000 to $8,000 each without any food or beverage provided.

“People ask, ‘Why did you do it?’” Xie says. “But how many times in your life do you have an opportunity like this? To bring so many cool people together and see what kind of joy that it brings them has been really cool.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Many missed out on last summer’s U.S. dates or struggled to buy tickets for the upcoming North American leg, which costs thousands on StubHub. Resale laws in France have kept congruent ticket inflation at bay, encouraging fans to spend their money on airline tickets and hotels to experience the Eras Tour overseas instead. For many, the flights were less than domestic U.S. flights, and the sheer volume of hotels ensures that affordable options exist. It was an opportunity a lot of North American Swifties couldn’t resist.

In France, the law specifies that tickets for sporting and cultural events can’t be sold above face value. Ticketmaster France provides a seller-to-seller reseller platform, which is governed by these regulations. “You may not list resale tickets for a price above the face value of the primary tickets, except with the agreement of the event organizer which you will be informed of when you offer resale tickets for sale on the resale platform,” the vendor notes in its rules.

Watch Taylor Swift Play ‘Hey Stephen,’ ‘Maroon’ at Eras Tour in Paris

Taylor swift debuts 'my boy only breaks his favorite toys' live at paris eras tour, watch paramore perform 'burning down the house’ live in paris.

As StubHub’s chief business officer Cris Miller told Rolling Stone in 2022, “We believe artists have a right to be able to sell their tickets at whatever price they see fit. And similarly, once that ticket is rightfully purchased by a consumer, we respect that ticket holder’s right and freedom to resell their ticket, freely as a truly free market should allow.”

That free market has led to some serious FOMO for Swifties who want to see their favorite artist perform live. Parents feel an added pressure to score tickets for their kids, which becomes amplified when their friends get to go and they don’t, a result of both availability and cost. The solution? Head to Europe.

“They feel like, ‘The cool kids are going, why am I not going?’” says Washington state resident Jennifer Johnson, who brought her teenage daughter to Paris after failing to get U.S. tickets. “There’s going to be a portion of sales that are completely random, because it is just who gets chosen from the ticket lottery. But then there are the people who will dish out $10,000 for a ticket. It becomes the haves and the have-nots for the people who are willing to buy those tickets.”

Last summer, Cheri McCormick’s 13-year-old daughter, Ellie, was so desperate to see Swift perform she stood in the parking lot of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, for four hours to “Taygate” an Eras Tour concert from outside the venue. McCormick tried to buy tickets but couldn’t get a code via Ticketmaster. At the time, resell tickets went for $2,500-3,000 for obstructed-view seats.

Ellie’s dream is coming true this week in Paris. McCormick purchased two tickets for $1,500, which she says is “easily at least half or even a quarter of the cost of lesser seats with obstructed views in much larger stadiums for the upcoming U.S. shows.” She booked flights and a hotel using points, making a vacation in Paris a “far less expensive venture” than a concert in Santa Clara.

When Swift announced the initial leg of the Eras Tour in 2022, Swiftie outrage from the tour’s infamous Ticketmaster on-sale reignited conversation around the broken ticket marketplace, both against the live music giant Live Nation Entertainment (Ticketmaster’s parent company) and the resale market. While Ticketmaster was the official selling partner for tickets, thousands of fans were out of luck before Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan presale even ended. Fans had to sign up for the presale and be “invited” for a chance to buy tickets, but few people actually got the chance to place an order.

But due to France’s stricter laws, Shelly Ferry was able to turn the Eras Tour Paris shows into a full-on family holiday. She traveled to France from Great Falls, Virginia, with her 15-year-old daughter, two of her daughter’s friends, and her three sons, ages five, seven, and 14. She initially purchased VIP tickets through the venue for night two totaling €780 (around $840), and then an additional four floor seats through the ticket lottery for night one for €300 (around $323) total.

Ferry decided to fly overseas after pricing out a similar trip to Florida. “I would have loved to see Taylor in Miami and had reached out to rent a suite, but the tickets came out to $17,712 for four people without flight, hotel, rental car, parking, etc.,” she says. “We’re going to Paris [and] seeing Taylor Swift for two nights for significantly less. At the last minute, I decided to take my three boys and even with the plane tickets, the extra hotel room, and concert tickets, we were still spending almost the same or less than Miami or L.A.”

Carolyn Emerson, who is part of Xie’s group of physician fans, brought her husband along for the show to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. “There’s a mania around this tour that has gotten out of control, and the ticket sellers and scalpers love having a scarce product to sell,” Emerson says. “What concerns me is the process, stress, uncertainty, queueing, refreshing, and dynamic pricing that it takes to even buy tickets nowadays. There need to be laws passed prohibiting reselling above face value. You should be able to resell your ticket if you can’t go, but prevent people buying tickets just so they can make a profit on reselling them.”

Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s Global Travel Trends Expert, confirms that it can be better value for North American fans to seek out Eras Tour concerts in Europe. “You’re unlikely to make huge savings, but combining cheap overseas flights and accommodation with cheaper concert tickets can sometimes mean a similar overall cost,” Lindsay says. “If you’re able to travel for the concerts in Europe, your memories of seeing the tour might also include some incredible French pastries, Norwegian fashionista-spotting, or Italian pasta. Prices are driven by demand and supply, and a strong dollar means European hotels might be cheaper than their equivalent in the United States. So, for example, instead of traveling on busy domestic flights over July Fourth weekend, it might be cheaper to fly to Amsterdam for the Eras Tour dates.”

Tickets for the European dates are still available on resale websites. The European leg of the Eras Tour will run through the summer, wrapping with a five-night stand in London in August. After that, Swift will play a final round of shows in North America, with concerts scheduled in Miami, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Toronto, and Vancouver. In December, the Eras Tour became the highest-grossing concert tour of all time, according to live music trade publication Pollstar , with the tour becoming the first to gross more than $1 billion.

Taylor Swift kicks off European leg of Eras Tour with four nights in Paris

The highest-grossing tour in history finally arrived in Europe on Thursday as Taylor Swift kicked off her European dates with four nights in Paris.

Issued on: 09/05/2024 - 07:13

Thousands of fans were already visiting the La Defense Arena 24 hours before the show just to get their hands on the merchandise as soon as possible.

A handful of superfans camped out from Tuesday to ensure they got a prime spot in the standing section.

"I didn't plan to, but I came to check it out and I saw the first tents and I panicked a little," said Chris, 30.

Noah, 20, is seeing all four Paris concerts -- he used 22 email addresses to get through the lottery system and secure the tickets.

Many accents in the crowd were American -- the venue says a fifth of the audience has come from the United States .

Georg'Ann Daly decided to celebrate her 23rd birthday with the show in Paris. It meant flying from Nashville to Chicago to London and catching the Eurostar to Paris.

"I've always been obsessed with Taylor Swift ," she told AFP.

"I went to her show in Nashville and thought I'm never doing that again because it was crazy. It's a lot of over-stimulation and I have social anxiety.

"But it's my birthday and it's Paris and it's the first night of the tour, and I thought why not? It's so worth it!"

Record-breaker

Some 42,000 people will see Swift in Paris before she heads on for dates in Sweden , Portugal , Spain , Britain , Ireland , Netherlands , Switzerland , Italy , Germany , Poland and Austria .

The Eras Tour has worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023.

By the end of the year, it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December.

Swifties in Paris are especially excited to hear songs off her new album, "The Tortured Poets Society", being performed for the first time.

Many critics have derided the 31-track album as bloated and lacking in sure-fire hits.

But you won't hear that from the devoted crowd in Paris.

"I love the new album -- it's chill, it's fun to listen to even though it's got a sadder vibe," said Kelly Shrout, 40, who flew with 11 friends from Kentucky in the United States for the show.

"I hope she plays 'Fortnight'," she added.

Her popularity shows no sign of dimming -- the new album shifted 1.4 million copies on its first day and broke every streaming record going, reaching a billion streams on Spotify within five days.

Swift's tell-all dissections of her love stories have been the fuel powering her global domination, and fans have been pouring over "The Tortured Poets Department" for cryptic clues about Joe Alwyn, her short-but-dramatic fling with Matty Healy (lead singer of The 1975), and her current partner, American football star Travis Kelce.

"Taylor talks about toxic relationships, impossible love, politics, mental health, and so much more -- I think we can all find a song that resonates with our experiences," said Chris as she waited by her tent for the big moment.
