If a visa is required, a personal application (personal interview, fingerprints, etc.) must be submitted to an Application Center in Berlin, Dusseldorf or Munich.  Expect a lead time of 1 to 2 weeks to get an appointment for an interview. We strongly recommend to submit the following documents (possibly all in English) at the date of the appointment:

• company letter from employer in Germany, with details of the traveller and the purpose of the trip (name, position in the company, planned travel dates, planned activity on site; sample )
• letter of invitation   from the company/organisation in Great Britain
• booking documents  of hotel and flight, Reservation are okay
• current account statement sufficient funds must be available to match the information in the application
• copy of rental agreement/land register entry  this should proof that the main residence is in Germany non-German applicants
• current residence registration (Meldebescheinigung) (if EU citizen) or
• valid residence permit for Germany (if not EU citizen)

How can apply this type of visa?

You can apply for this visa if you intend to travel to the United Kingdom as a tourist or if you propose to visit family or friends. The visit visa category also allows artists, sportsperson and those requiring medical treatment to enter the UK under this category. The tourist/visit visa does not allow applicants to work or carry out any business activities.

The duration of the visit visa can vary, it is possible to obtain a visit visa with the duration of 6 months, 24 months, 60 months and 120 months. Long term visas are offered to frequent visitors and those who have a genuine reason to travel to the UK. The visa officer will decide whether you qualify for a long term visa, should a visa be granted for a shorter period you will not be refunded the difference.

Processing times

Interview slots are allocated by the Consulate in some cases you may have to wait longer than 5 days depending on availability. Please apply no latest than four weeks before you intend to travel.

In general, the total price is calculated as follows, the Visas United service fee + consular fees + fee of the visacenter Teleperformance.

Visas United processing fee is € 299 for the first person. If there is any other person in the same order, the fee is € 249. The consulate fee is currently about € 144,13 for each person (The fees may vary depending on the rate of exchange). The fee of the visa application center Teleperformance is € 95,00 + € 50,00 scanning fee. Self-pick-up is free of charge. If you wish to have you passport returned by courier there is a charge of € 35,00.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Germany set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the German Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules 

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Germany.

Passport validity requirements 

Germany follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

If you have a residence permit, you must have a valid passport for the duration of your stay. Renew it before the expiry date.

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Germany, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Germany are different.     

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

At German border control, you may need to:

• show a return or onward ticket
• prove that you have enough money for your stay

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the German government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or permit you need with the  German Embassy in the UK . 

If you’re in Germany with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

If you are planning to visit Germany or other countries within the Schengen zone, you may need to apply for a visa beforehand. Your particular visa type is determined by the reason and length of your trip.

If you’re simply visiting Germany, you will need to get a short-stay visa (C visa) more notably known as the Schengen visa .

These particular visas cover your trip to Germany and those other countries that are classified as part of the Schengen area.

The Schengen area covers 27 countries, these countries do not have border control between them.

On a Schengen visa, you’ll be allowed to visit for 90 days maximum on this visa within a 180-day period.

It is crucial to point out that throughout this time you must ensure you do not pursue any economic activity unless you are authorised to do so within your visa.

Additionally, the Schengen visa comes with its own requirements that fall under the Schengen Visa Code which is what the mission adopts for their visa process.

It is important to note though, that if you’re a British citizen you do not need to require a visa when you visit.

Not everyone from the UK will need to apply for a Schengen visa, for instance, if you’re a British citizen you do not require one.

Although several groups of people reside in the UK are still obligated to gain one. These come with varying entry requirements depending on which category you fall under.

Notably, this mainly comes down to your nationality, such as non-EU nationals that live within the UK or other individual circumstances.

To check whether you are a citizen of a certain country that applies to this is listed here. The short-term Schengen visas are intended for those who are visiting from the UK to Germany for the following reasons:

• Business purposes (standard business travel)
• Short-term study purposes
• Visiting friends and family
• Tourism/holidays
• Airport transit/transit for seafarers
• Official visits
• Cultural or sports events
• Medical reasons

Depending on your particular reason for visiting, the Embassy or Consulate-General within the UK will determine whether they will issue you a single, double or multiple-entry visa.

There are a certain number of requirements to look out for while preparing your visa application.

As you will not be automatically accepted for a Schengen visa, the mission will ensure you follow such requirements before you are accepted. These are:

• You must demonstrate that you have every intention to leave Germany before your visa expires
• You must have a plausible reason and purpose for your Germany trip
• You must also be able to afford and fund the entirety of your trip such as your travel expenses and your stay with your own funds

Your funding should also include your travel health insurance with a policy that covers 30,000 euros minimum. Ensure that this insurance covers the entirety of the Schengen area for it to be accepted.

Although within your Schengen visa, you are prohibited from any economic activity, it’s important to know that some particular professional activities can still be done and carried out. This may be sports activities, cultural events or standard business travel.

Additionally, those under the age of 18 have their requirements to follow. As they are underage children they will need to be accompanied by adult guardians such as their parents while attending the application centre in the UK and to be accompanied while travelling in Germany if their visa is accepted. You must also have a UK residence permit that is valid for at least one month post the date you plan to leave Germany.

When applying for your Germany visit visa, more known as a Schengen visa in the UK, several documents are required from you that must be completed before proceeding further. These include:

• Make sure it is also valid for 3 months after you leave Germany and other Schengen countries
• There are two spare pages for your visa to be stamped
• Your passport has been issued in the past 10 years but has not been extended
• A valid UK residence permit
• German visa application form
• This should look professional with a light background and a full face is shown
• This photo shouldn’t be older than 3 months and must be glued and not stapled into your German Schengen visa application form
• A cover letter stating the purpose of your visit
• Make sure it has a coverage of 30,000 euros minimum and it covers medical emergencies and reparations for the entirety of the Schengen area
• If you have the latter, they must also provide a copy of their passport or ID. Alternatively, proof of sponsorship, if dependent
• Such as a recent bank statement from a UK account that is no older than 3 months
• The minimum funds should be £50 per day, per person while travelling in Germany

You are also required to provide your biometrics (fingerprints) as an additional document.

Those who are exempted from providing their biometrics include people who are physically incapable of providing so and children under the age of 12.

All these documents listed are required for everyone. But depending on your employment status, there are additional documents that are required for your visa application in the UK.

If you are employed within the UK:

• Employment contract
• Current bank statement, within 6 months
• Leave permission from your employer
• Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax that has been deducted at the source of salary

If you are self-employed:

• A copy of your business licence
• Company bank statement, within 6 months
• Income Tax Return

If you’re a foreign student within the UK:

• Proof of enrolment
• No-objection certificate from a school or university in the UK

If you’re unemployed but married to an EU citizen:

• A less than 3 months old and recent Confirmation of Employment letter from your spouse’s employer, which states the position held as well as their starting date
• Your spouse’s valid passport
• Officially translated marriage certificate. This should be in either German or English and must be certified by the Embassy of the country where the marriage took place or the Legalisation Bureau of the Foreign Office in the UK to prove its authenticity

Required documents for underage children:

• Original birth certificate among others
• Signed travel consent from both parents

If one of them is not located within the UK they should be signed with consent from the German Embassy in the country they reside in themselves.

Lastly, if you’re a retiree, it will be a pension statement of the latest of 6 months.

Remember to ensure all documents you provide are in English or German or have been officially translated by a certified translator.

Knowing where you should apply for your Schengen visa application a a visa application centre or German Embassy in the UK is determined by the following:

• Your main destination is Germany, as in, this is the particular country you will be staying in the longest
• Germany is the only Schengen country you’re planning to visit
• The first place you will visit in the Schengen area is going to be Germany and you will be spending an equal amount of days in every Schengen country you are planning to visit

If you apply to the above, you must go to your respective embassy in London or the German Consulate General in Edinburgh.

You can do this by booking an appointment with them directly. Afterwards, despite which you go to, your application will be assessed in London.

It’s essential to be aware of what the processing time is to apply and to go through each step of the Schengen visa process so you can align it with your planned trip.

On average, the processing time can take 15 calendar days at the minimum. Make sure you prepare for any delays as in some situations the processing time can take up to 4 weeks or longer, with the additional time to mail such documents.

Because of this, it is recommended to book your appointment as earliest as you can.

This being said, the earliest you can do this is 6 months prior to the date you’re planning to visit.

The fees you will have to pay during the visa application are determined by your age as well as the current up-to-date conversion rates.

There are also certain exemptions to these fees to keep an eye out on.

For UK residents, the Germany visitor visa fees are below:

• Adult: £73/€80
• Children (6-12 years): £36.50/€40

Those who are exempt from paying a fee include children younger than 6 years and family members of an EU/EEA national.

For those exempted persons, you will be required to provide documents that are either:

• Original marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate
• Original full birth certificate
• EU/EAA national’s passport

What is the minimum bank balance for a Germany visa?

Visa for Germany when traveling from the Uk

Germany and the UK enjoy a cordial relationship, but this doesn't mean that they don't have rules that govern their citizens' interactions. A major distinction is that Germany does not require visas for British nationals, but the UK does. The visa restrictions were set to prevent fraud and system abuse.

Therefore, you will need a visa to visit Germany from the UK. If it's your first time visiting the country, you must apply for a tourist visa. Thankfully, there are various forms of tourist visas readily available for you.

For first-time visitors, you should apply for the EU Blue Card or an EU Long-term Residence Permit (LTRP). The two documents are similar in the sense that they allow non-German individuals from abroad to live and work in Germany . The only difference comes in depending on the period you can stay.

The EU Blue Card is the same as a Temporary Residence Permit , but it's meant for certain people who are highly skilled in their profession and would like to work in Germany . On the other hand, the LTRP is meant for people intending to stay much longer in Germany: at least a minimum of 5 years.

Germany Visa Application Requirements for UK Residents

Anyone from the UK who visits Germany must apply for a Visa as per the requirements. Germany is a member of the Schengen region , so no extra documentation is necessary if you have a current passport and can demonstrate that you will have enough money to support yourself while there. There are a few exceptions to this rule, though:

• Australian, Canadian, and Japanese nationals are required to have an onward ticket that includes enough money to cover their stay in Germany. Depending on how long you intend to stay, this cost varies, typically between 300 and 1000 euros per person. Note that some airlines may want extra documentation, such as credit card receipts or bank statements detailing recent activity from these accounts.

• Any South African citizen can't enter without a visa. However, there is an exception: if you're employed by an international company or currently enrolled as a university student abroad. In such cases, you'll need an official letter as proof.

How About Brexit and Travelling to Germany

Even that the United Kingdom left the EU, you can still travel and work in Europe as a citizen of that country. An agreement known as "The SPMR" (Status of People Moving to or Residing in a Member State) between the UK Government and the EU Member States outlines the rights of British residents residing in the EU. In addition to describing how people can travel inside Europe, this article also describes how you can obtain medical care and educational resources in Germany .

Making travel plans to Germany

You must complete a few tasks before travelling to Germany . For starters, ensure you possess an EU health insurance card , also known as a European Health Insurance Card or EHIC. Thanks to this card, you can receive medical care in Germany at a discounted fee or even for free.

The next plan should be purchasing travel insurance, protecting you from trip cancellations and other potential problems. Be careful as you make your purchase and only buy from a dependable vendor to avoid inconveniences.

After completing the above steps successfully, you should get a German address. Without a German mailing address moving around can be challenging since you might encounter certain there may be barriers if people think they can't get in touch with you at your home via mail or phone call. If you can't get your own house, you can explore alternatives such as renting an apartment through Airbnb or a friend's address. Note that if you use any of these options, the person you work with must be willing to do it and be a German citizen staying around.

German Visa Requirements for UK Citizens

You're free to apply for a German visa from anywhere in the United Kingdom. For a short-stay visa application, you will have to visit the embassy and bring along these documents: • A Valid Passport - you should present a passport that's valid for about three months after the trip and should have two blank pages (one for the visa stamp and an additional spare page). It should also be valid when you travel to Germany. • Fee payment receipt - this verifies that you paid the visa fee when you submitted your online application or that it was mailed to you. Embassies do not accept cash payments; before applying, please make sure your bank account has enough money. • A record of your travel plans - will show that you have reserved a reservation for a flight, train, lodging, and return transport. In short, it's an itinerary. • Proof of residence in the UK - shown by documents such as tax returns, utility bills or bank statements.

Note that your passport should contain a photo of yourself and relevant information. Such information for entry visa application includes if you had previously visited Germany and other countries. Include the exact dates. For an exit visa, include a list of all the places you plan to visit.

Requirements for Short Trips in EU Countries

The requirements for this are quite simple. All you need is: 1. A valid passport or identity card. 2. A visa if you travel from one country to another by train or ferry. 3. Prove that you have adequate funds for your journey and return ticket

What Should you Know About the Germany Visa Requirements if you're from the UK

If you are travelling from the UK, you must be aware of the visa requirements for Germany. Since Brexit, there are certain groups of people who won't be allowed to travel without a visa. This doesn't mean they can't travel to Germany. They still can, only that they meet certain requirements. These requirements are: • It would help if you first determined whether your nation is a member of the Schengen Area (26 European nations make up this zone). The zone allows its inhabitants to travel freely without having to present their passports or visas each time they cross an international boundary.

Unfortunately, the UK isn't in this zone because it doesn't share borders with other Schengen member states. As a result, the UK is not part of this agreement. However, after the Brexit negotiations between UK and EU leaders, it was concluded that it should automatically become a member of the Schengen Zone once Britain leaves Europe on March 29 (until at least 2021). In the event this happens, all British citizens who currently possess valid European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) issued by NHS Digital before March 29, 2020, will keep using these cards even after the Brexit takes effect.

What About British Citizens who Resided in Germany before Brexit

At the time the Withdrawal Agreement entered into force, UK persons with British citizenship who were residing in Germany may keep doing so under their current legal status. Additionally, they will be entitled to keep living in the country with their non-EU family members. Other benefits are that they can work as long as their spouse gives them permission. Additionally, social security and health care will be available to them. It wasn't necessary to have a residence title until at least December 31, 2020. However, these rights will only be recognised if the people in question possess legitimate identification documents proving their British citizenship and their presence in Germany is authorised.

Sunday might be a day of rest for many of us, but for prime ministers and political journalists there's no such thing.

Sir Keir Starmer has had a busy day, kicking off a tour of the UK, and there's been plenty else keeping us busy.

Here are the main things you need to know from today:

• Sir Keir Starmer has headed to Edinburgh for the start of a UK tour, where he'll meet with First Minister John Swinney;
• Speaking to Scottish Labour supporters beforehand, he promised to "serve every single person in Scotland" no matter who they voted for;
• The PM hopes his visits to Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will signal a "reset in relations" between Westminster and the devolved administrations;
• It comes after Labour enjoyed a revival in Scotland to become the largest party north of the border, and kept that status in Wales too.
• New government ministers are settling into their roles and were quick to rule out introducing ID cards to tackle illegal immigration this morning;
• Labour's top team distanced themselves from the suggestion made by former party leader and prime minister Sir Tony Blair ;
• The new Northern Ireland secretary, Hilary Benn, also denied there was a case for a border poll on the island of Ireland after Sinn Fein became the largest Northern Irish party at Westminster.
• Meanwhile, the Tory leadership race may well be under way after several former ministers refused to rule themselves out;
• Robert Jenrick and Suella Braverman were among those on the media round this morning who indicated they could be up for replacing Rishi Sunak;
• But our political correspondent Darren McCaffrey says there are some in the party who want them to take their time before deciding, rather than rushing towards a right-wing candidate looking to stave off the threat from Reform UK.

Sir Keir Starmer has met with Scotland's first minister, John Swinney.

Speaking to broadcasters afterwards, both men were asked if Scottish independence had come up in the talks.

After losing the vast majority of their seats last week, the SNP are arguing the Holyrood results in 2021 still give them a mandate to work towards leaving the UK.

Sir Keir - whose party grew sizeably in Scotland - has said he is targeting the next Holyrood election in 2026 to win even more of a mandate.

On the talks today, Sir Keir said he would not go into details of what was discussed - but said that the two "can work constructively together".

He added that he has made a commitment to deliver for Scotland, and that he plans to make good on it.

Sir Keir added that he took the opportunity to "reset relations" with the first and deputy first ministers.

He conceded there were "clearly differences of opinion" between them on constitutional matters, but the meeting was still constructive.

Mr Swinney said he "very much welcomed" the engagement and was committed to improving the relationship between the Scottish and UK administrations.

He said the SNP made clear they have "different views" on the constitution - but also that the SNP is taking time "to reflect and consider" the issues posed by the election.

They lost 39 of their 48 seats on Thursday.

Mr Swinney said the party intends to focus on issues like economic growth, child poverty, public services and net zero ahead of securing independence.

The government is to divert tens of millions of pounds from the Rwanda scheme to set up a new Border Security Command (BSC), as it announces its plans to tackle illegal migration.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has also announced an audit of the monies sent to Kigali as the Labour administration looks to find ways to save or recoup cash committed under the Conservatives.

Ms Cooper plans to raise the issue of illegal migration with her European colleagues at the European Political Community Summit on 18 July.

Before the general election, Sir Keir Starmer said his party wanted to send around £75m a year to their new border scheme, from the scrapped Rwanda deportation programme.

The prime minister described the Conservative-era plans to send asylum seekers to Africa as "dead and buried" earlier this weekend.

However, it is understood Labour has not reached out to Kigali to discuss the way forward, as the previous UK government promised hundreds of millions of pounds for migrants to be sent to Rwanda.

Defence Secretary John Healey has already met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the Labour government making a new pledge on sending arms to Ukraine.

Mr Healey also promised that the equipment Rishi Sunak announced in April will be delivered within the first 100 days of the new government.

He said: "Our commitment to stand with the Ukrainian people is absolute, as is our resolve to confront Russian aggression and pursue Putin for his war crimes.

"This government is steadfast in our commitment to continue supplying military assistance and will stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian friends for as long as it takes."

The newly promised package of aid includes: 

• A quarter of a million of 50 calibre ammunition;
• 90 anti-armour Brimstone missiles;
• 50 small military boats to support river and coastal operations;
• 40 de-mining vehicles;
• 10 AS-90 artillery guns;
•  61 bulldozers to help build defensive positions;
• Support for previously gifted AS-90s.

The new home secretary has wasted little time in getting started in her role - launching the promised Border Security Command (BSC) just days after her appointment. 

The BSC was one of the cornerstones of Sir Keir Starmer's manifesto - Labour's solution to the small boats crisis.

The set-up is being at least partly funded by diverting £75m from the now cancelled Rwanda scheme. 

Yvette Cooper has set out the first steps for establishing the BSC, which promises to "strengthen Britain's borders security and smash the criminal smuggling gangs making millions out of small boat crossings".

The plan includes the rapid recruitment of an "exceptional leader", which begins tomorrow. 

'We can't carry on like this'

The new recruit, who is expected to take up their post in the coming weeks, will report directly to the office of the home secretary. 

They will be tasked with providing a "strategic direction" across agencies, including the National Crime Agency, police, immigration enforcement, and the Border Force.

Ms Cooper is also preparing early legislation which will introduce new counter-terror style powers for the BSC, and has commissioned an investigation into the routes and tactics used by smuggling gangs.

She said it would be a "major step change" in the UK's efforts to tackle organised immigration crime, working "across Europe" and co-ordinating with prosecutors on the continent.

"We can't carry on like this," she said, adding the BSC will act as a "major upgrade" on the immigration system Labour have inherited. 

Sir Keir Starmer has just spoken alongside the Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who introduced the new PM to a rapturous applause of party supporters in Edinburgh.

After a long intro from his Scottish colleague, Sir Keir says it's "hugely important" for him to visit the devolved nations as soon as possible. 

"That was an incredible election result, a historic result and a real mandate for change - we start here," he says. 

He says there's nothing "inevitable" about an election win, adding "we won because we campaigned as changed Labour". 

"We [will] govern in the same spirit… we will serve the entirety of Scotland, we will serve every single person in Scotland because that change matters to everyone."

Our political correspondent  Amanda Akass   says the speech was a reminder of the unique opportunity Sir Keir has to unite the UK's devolved administrations.

Scottish Labour "really rose out of the ashes of their previous defeats" in this week's general election, she says, going from one MP to 37.

The PM wants those new MPs "to be a big part of the government in Westminster to deliver for the people of Scotland as part of that mandate for change".

He'll also be meeting First Minister John Swinney, as part of what he hopes will be a "reset" in relations between Westminster and Holyrood.

Sir Keir Starmer is giving a speech following a meeting with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar in Edinburgh this afternoon.

It comes at the start of the PM's first UK tour - once he's finished north of the border he'll be going to Wales and Northern Ireland.

"I always get a little bit frustrated when people mention life experience because no one has yet been able to explain to me why being older makes you better at that job," he told BBC Breakfast.

"I have had experiences that lots of older MPs won't have had, and I have done quite a lot for my age as well," he said, pointing to his position in the council cabinet overseeing £17m of public money.

Mr Carling will be nicknamed "baby of the House" when he enters the Commons, taking over the tradition from fellow Labour MP Keir Mather.

The Father of the House will be Sir Edward Leigh, 73, who has served continuously since 1983.

Some had thought Jeremy Corbyn would gain the title - but he was sworn in 20 places behind Sir Edward in the queue that year.

Sir Edward held his Gainsborough seat on Thursday, albeit with a much reduced majority of 3,532 - 30 percentage points fewer than in 2019.

Mother of the House goes to Diane Abbott, 70, who was elected in 1987 as the first black woman to win a seat in the House of Commons.

She was re-elected with a huge mandate on Thursday - 59.5% of the vote and a majority of more than 15,000.
