Best Onboard Activities On A Singles Cruise

People enjoying time on a cruise ship deck on singles cruise

When you are on a cruise, the activities are something that you are able to leave out or attend at your own leisure. On singles only cruises, however, the activities that are available onboard will help you to socialize with fellow singles and help you to have a great time on the ship.

There are activities that will be specifically geared towards singles and there will be other activities that everyone can attend where you potentially meet other singles or can attend with the friends you have already found.

Whatever you’re looking to get out of your cruise, there is plenty to do on the ship that will be able to give you some memorable experiences. Each ship will different activities, therefore it’s good to see which types of companies are going to match your interests. With especially beautiful ports and destinations for singles you can make your cruise even more varied.

Exclusive singles events on singles-only cruises

On any given cruise there could be a number of different activities that can be geared for singles but if you are attending a cruise that is specifically catering for singles, there will be a lot that can be offered to make your experience a great one and allow you to have a great chance of meeting someone.

One great way for singles to meet together is if there is a space that is dedicated just for singles to socialize together. Some companies will offer a singles lounge where you will be able to enjoy the space and give you a great chance to meet fellow solo cruisers.

If a company doesn’t offer a singles lounge specifically, then there is a good chance that singles nights will be held at any of their bars or lounges. While you may be a little nervous at first, you’ll soon find it to be a very comfortable situation and will be able to enjoy yourself.

As single women tend to be in the majority on single cruises, companies can also offer gentlemen hosts that will be able to play host to the single events to help get people together and can even dance with guests to help them have a great evening together.

They are not the only cruise activities that can be used to bring single people together. A lot of ships will host welcome cocktail parties that will be able to allow people to socialize at the start of the cruise vacation. Not only can this be a great way to get to know people straight away, but it can also allow you to find friends and like-minded people who you will be able to enjoy activities and excursions with others for the rest of your cruise.

Another great way to enjoy a singles cruise is to go on excursions with your fellow singles guests. Due to the nature of cruising, this could be a whole range of different scenarios and adventures and it’s great to do something different. This can be a great way of letting go and making the most out of your vacation.

All these singles activities will depend on the cruise line that you are using and also if you are booking through a tour operator that is going to book out rooms exclusively for a singles experience. As you can imagine, the more singles-orientated your booking, the more singles events that you are going to have onboard the ship.

It’s a great idea to look ahead and see exactly what the cruise vacation has to offer as there can be a large difference between one ship and the next. If you are unsure, then you will be able to contact your cruise director or your tour operator in order to get more details.

Plenty of classes on singles cruises

One of the great ways to meet new people when you are onboard the ship is to go to one of the vast range of classes that can be available on different ships. Some of these can be organized specifically for solo travelers and others will simply be a great chance to meet like-minded people.

This really is one area that can vary from one ship to the next as they will mix up the classes they offer from one journey to the next. There can be themed cruises for singles, however, that will be able to offer you more of a tailored trip where you will know that you are going to find people who have the same interests as you.

One of the most traditional classes that you are able to attend that happen on a lot of ships is cooking classes. Even if you are a complete novice you will be able to enjoy yourself and try to make something new. General classes and demonstrations are often available, as are more personal classes, but the general classes are a great chance to meet and socialize with other single travelers.

Other similar cruise classes are available in aspects such as photography and computer skills where you will be able to have fun learning something new. These types of activities are able to give you a new experience while onboard the ship and have a laugh doing so.

One of the best ways to meet fellow singles, whether on a ship or on land, is through dancing. It’s hard to not let yourself go with swing dances or a line dance class and many people love the feeling of doing the cha cha and dancing the night away. Whether it is a ballroom dancing class, any other type of dancing or simply going solo and enjoying the party, dancing is a wonderful way to meet singles.

One way to let your mind unwind is with a little alcohol and one of the great ways to do that on a cruise ship is with an alcohol tasting session. This could be all manner of different types of alcohol from wine to beer to whiskey and you will be able to choose your favorite one and have a great time.

There are often plenty of other onboard activities for those looking for something a little faster paced. These can be the likes of fencing, games, golf, surfing and a whole host of other sports. These are a great way to have social interaction while having fun enjoying your favorite activity, or something completely new.

This is only a snippet to the type of classes that can be found on cruise ships, and some of these will be available on some and not others. It’s always great to check ahead and see what they have to offer but classes can be a great way of meeting singles. Not only can you gain friends and possibly meet someone special, but you will also be able to have fun and learn something new in the process.

Cruises for singles are all about the entertainment

One of the greatest parts about going on a cruise ship is the sheer amount of entertainment onboard which will help you to have fun, meet new people and make your break a memorable one. You will never be short of things to whilst on the ship.

If you are on a dedicated singles cruise then there will often be small group visits the best shows and performances where you will be able to have a laugh and unwind while watching many of the ships talented crew.

One of the staples of cruise entertainment is singing and there are likely to be many great singers on the ship who will all be able to put on a great show. This might be a solo act, a more musical number or it could be themed for one particular type of music. Enjoying a great singer is always going to make for a very enjoyable night.

Another piece of great entertainment that cruise ships can have is having a cinema on board which will either show new films or a selection of other masterpieces. Despite its reputation for romance, going to the cinema isn’t the greatest place to find romance but it is a great way to spend a couple of hours with someone you’ve found.

Also onboard will be a wide variety of other different entertainment that will be played on the stage such as shows, plays and comedy performances. This is all about settling into a relaxed environment and enjoying a performance without any expectation or pressure. This is a great way to meet new people while having fun.

Fun activities for all singles cruisers

If you’re single, you will also want to go out and have fun in one of the ships activities that aren’t specifically designed for singles, such as rock climbing that can be found on Royal Caribbean for the more adventurous travelers. These will still allow you to have a great time, whether that is on your own or with a friend that you have met in your double occupancy if you are not in one of the solo cabins, as you will want to experience everything that the ship has to offer.

While it might not be everyone’s idea of having a relaxing vacation break, going to the gym for some can not only be a good way to stay in shape but again it will give you an environment to meet new people. Exercising while looking out onto the beautiful ocean is also going to be a big change from doing it in an artificially lit gym at home.

If that sounds like hell, or you want to unwind after a big session, then going to a spa is a great way to relax. This can be less about meeting people and more about simply letting yourself have a break from life and the noise of the crowd. Once you have finished, then you can once again rejoin the rest of the ship and continue your cruising adventure.

If you are looking for something that is going to get your heart racing, then many ships have an onboard casino where you will be able to enjoy the thrill of gambling. There are many other fast-paced ways of enjoying yourself and the beauty of a cruise is that you have so much choice that you can simply pick and choose.

If you feel as though you've had enough activities for the day then you can always just enjoy heading out to one of the many bars that these ships have. Whether you are heading to a singles-specific night or not, the humble bars has been the scene for numerous first encounters to wonderful relationships. It is just one of many different ways that you can make your time onboard a memorable one and leave with new friends and possibly a new partner.

Tailor your singles cruise to suit your needs

As we have seen here, there are numerous different types of activities and singles events that are going to make your experience an incredible one. You will have many opportunities to meet with another single person who love cruising but also enjoy the same activities as you.

One of the incredible aspects of cruising is that you are able to fit your holiday around you. It could be that one day you are going to look into a class, a show and a party, and it could be the next day you simply want to relax in the sun and a have a massage in a spa.

As a single, you will never be alone if you don’t want to be as there is always plenty to do. Events and activities can vary quite a lot from one company to another and therefore you want to make sure that your cruise is going to have everything that you want out of it.

Everyone is very different and what might be a great activity for one might be another person’s idea of hell. On a cruise you only ever have to do what you want to do but it makes sense to look for a cruise that is going to more geared towards what you love to do. Even if you are not sure yet of taking a singles cruise , if you heed a few tips , you'll have a great experience.

A singles cruise is a great way to have a wonderful vacation while giving yourself the opportunity to meet someone special or meet new friends who you will be able to share future adventures with. If you are heading off to a cruise on your own then you could well find that it is the last time you do so if you attend the singles activities onboard the ship.

Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes a maximum of 2,762 passengers and 1,150 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, Scarlet Lady boasts unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to over 2,160 square feet for RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

Scarlet Lady is homeported in Miami; it sails throughout the Caribbean and Europe.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Tips for Traveling Alone and Why You Should Go on a Solo Cruise

By  Chantae Reden | Published on December 1, 2021

At the age of 19, I purchased a plane ticket to Nicaragua and ventured on my first-ever solo trip to Central America. Ten years and 30 countries later, I still believe that traveling alone is one of the best ways to see the world. When you travel solo, you're likely to make new friends, develop newfound confidence and experience the freedom of waking up in a destination and doing the activities you're passionate about, all on your own timeline.

Tips For Traveling Solo

When friends and family hear that I'm planning a solo trip to a far-flung destination, I'm usually met with one question:

"Is it safe to travel alone?"

Understandably, safety is one of the biggest factors on people's minds when it comes to venturing on a solo vacation. On my first international trip traveling alone, I scheduled a driver to pick me up at the airport and drive me six hours away to my accommodations. However, my plane landed late in the evening and my driver was nowhere to be seen. I'd failed to write down the address of my destination, trusting the driver to have it. Then, because I'd failed to put a travel notice on my credit card, my debit card was declined at the airport's ATM. I only had the exact amount of cash on hand to pay my rogue driver.

With no plan B, I cried and walked from the airport to a nearby hotel in the dark. The hotel receptionist took pity on me and helped me call my bank and my family back home. We also arranged for a new driver to take me to my destination in Popoyo, Nicaragua the next morning.

Nicaragua Popoyo Shore Line Beach

Once I've arrived somewhere as a solo traveler, I take the same precautions that I take in any major city. I typically stick to main roads, avoid showing off any expensive objects and aim to be back in my hotel just after dinner. If a stranger seems too inquisitive, I'll mention that I'm planning to meet a friend. I also ask locals and hotel staff for safety advice and guidance on what scams I should be looking out for.

Though most destinations are worth visiting as a solo traveler, there are some that are easier to navigate than others. One thing you can count on, however, is that you likely won't be the only one doing it. Solo travelers are one of the fastest-growing travel demographics, with more people traveling alone to new countries each year. In regions like Europe , the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, solo travelers can be found in just about every hostel.

Taiwan Taipei City Skyline at Night

Joining meetup groups, walking tours and day trips and taking cultural dance or cooking classes are all interesting ways to learn about the place you're visiting in a social environment. As a solo traveler in Hawaii , I went on an adventure tour of the North Shore where we could snorkel, hike to waterfalls and kayak. While I was nervous about feeling left out of the group at first, I met a fellow solo traveler on the tour bus who happened to feel the same. We kayaked through a sea turtle sanctuary together, nearly spilling into the water in excitement whenever a sea turtle bobbed its head above the surface. Later, we met up for a sugar-sweet scoop of shave ice and swapped contact information.

It's a common misconception that traveling alone is bound to be a lonely experience. I've found I actually make more friends on the road as a solo traveler. I'm more likely to strike up a conversation with a stranger and join group experiences and I'm often seen as more approachable by other travelers than when I travel with a friend. Because I'm not beholden to anyone else's schedule, I can easily join and leave travel groups as I please. I've made some of my best friends while traveling solo and we now often plan trips together. My spouse and I met because he was traveling alone through California, my home state, and I gave him an impromptu tour of Southern California .

California Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel

If you're trying to decide where to stay, hostels foster a social environment that's ideal for making travel buddies. If you want to be able to take a break, some hostels have private rooms available, offering solo travelers a nice compromise of privacy and a social life. Standard hotels are ideal for those looking for solitude and a private escape, but it may be a challenge to make friends, especially if the hotel caters to romantic getaways or families with young children. And while relaxing at an overwater bungalow in the Maldives sounds idyllic, I'd probably save that seaside getaway for when I'm traveling with a partner.

Some guided multi-day tours cater to solo travelers, which is a bit of an oxymoron when you consider that you'll have travel partners from sunrise until sunset for the duration of your trip. This is a great option for those who are nervous about traveling on their own but don't want to let their fear get in the way of going on a journey to somewhere new.

Why A Cruise Is An Ideal Solo Vacation

A cruise offers a great balance of relaxation and adventure for solo travelers. It's a trip where you're bound to make interesting friends from all around the world while enjoying the freedom of movement that only solo travel brings. You can enjoy a multi-city trip with the freedom of not having to worry about the logistics of finding accommodation, transportation and delicious meals. Then you can recapture your solitude whenever it suits you and enjoy the destinations , activities and amenities that the cruise offers on your own schedule. Here are some of the best perks of a solo cruise.

Company (Only) When You Want It

Onboard a cruise, there are dozens of activities to keep you busy. Plus, you're bound to meet people as you try your hand at adventure activities like fencing, archery, ziplining, catching a wave on the FlowRider*, racing around on bumper cars, rock climbing and sliding down the best water attractions at sea.

When it's time to slow your heart rate, escape for a spa treatment or perch yourself at one of the many bars onboard and swap travel tales with the bartender. There are also cooking classes, theater performances, dance classes and karaoke nights, where you can get to know your fellow travelers by bonding over mutual affinities for and distastes of the songs being belted on stage.

Options For Outings

Once the ship pulls into port, you can venture on a shore excursion with other guests or strike out on your own. Fellow solo travelers tend to join shore excursion trips, so that's an easy way to make friends with whom you can plan future activities onboard. Blow bubbles and explore dive sites in the aquarium-clear waters of Bonaire with a scuba dive buddy, embrace your curiosity on a cultural tour of Kyoto, learn to surf in Oahu or explore the Greek ruins in Athens. Back on the ship, you'll have plenty of shared memories with your shipmates.

Your Own Team Of Experts

As a solo traveler onboard, it's often easy to get to know the staff. Crew members usually hail from all around the world and often share your love of travel. They're experts at recommending the best things to do no matter your interest and are also savvy when it comes to helping guests choose excursions and making the most of the ship's features. On one cruise, a staff member showed me which lounge chair area was bound to get the most shade throughout the day.

Dining is one of the most common conundrums for solo travelers, especially if you're not keen on ordering room service each evening. Fortunately, the maître d' often has a good eye for matching solo travelers at a dining table together as long as you simply let staff know in advance. If you'd like your solo vacation to double as a complete retreat, bring a book along and enjoy dining in your own company. Don't be afraid to enter the specialty dining restaurants, either.

It's A Good Value

Going solo on a cruise can offer a great deal for travelers. Solo cruise vacations are becoming increasingly popular and select Royal Caribbean ships have studio staterooms . These rooms are designed specifically with solo travelers in mind, and you can say goodbye to single supplement fees. If you'd rather go with another option, there's nothing wrong with paying a bit more and having a larger stateroom to yourself.

Ready To Travel Alone?

If you want to enjoy the freedom of a solo trip without the heavy planning logistics, a cruise is a great way to get your feet wet. You'll have the benefit of planned meals, activities and excursions whenever you want, along with plenty of ways to satisfy your wanderlust. A solo vacation is a great way to come to center; you'll return home feeling rejuvenated and filled with the confidence that all you need is yourself to have a wonderful time.

Solo Cruises: Ultimate Guide to Sailing Alone

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • September 12, 2020

The appeal of  solo cruises  lies in two camps: cruise heaven or downright terrifying.

I assume you want to know everything about  solo cruises  and cruising single? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

solo cruises travel

Statistics  released over the past few  years by the Cruise Lines International Association show that people traveling alone are an ever-increasing demographic.

Over the past decade, cruise lines have recognized the  solo traveler  market and now feature a variety of staterooms designed for single travelers without the need for a travel companion.

Cruise ships  now offer more  solo cabins  than ever, with NCL retrofitting its vessels to make all classes of  solo cabins  available, including veranda staterooms.

Why Take a Solo Cruise?

Choosing a  solo cruise  offers unmatched opportunities for those seeking freedom and adventure without compromise. It caters to the desires of  solo travelers  to explore at their own pace and meet like-minded individuals along the way.

Freedom and Flexibility

Freedom is the cornerstone of a  solo cruise  experience. The  solo traveler  enjoys complete autonomy in planning his or her day without synchronizing with others’ schedules. From choosing excursions to deciding on meal times, the flexibility available to  solo cruisers  means that one can follow their whims as they arise.

Meeting New People

Embarking on a solo cruise can be an ideal way to socialize and connect with fellow travelers. Solo cruisers are often able to meet new people, and many cruise lines offer activities and events specifically designed for singles. This creates a friendly environment where new friendships can be formed.

Personal Growth and Independence

Cruising solo fosters  personal growth and independence . It encourages solo travelers to leave their comfort zones and engage in new experiences, increasing self-reliance. The voyage becomes not just a journey across the sea, but also an exploration of one’s capabilities and strengths.

Planning a Solo Cruise

When planning a solo cruise, one must consider the variety of cruise lines available, choose the most suitable stateroom, and understand the financial aspects, such as the single supplement fee. Selecting the perfect cruise can be straightforward with the proper research and knowledge.

Length of the Cruise Matters

Retirees with passive income have the resources and time to indulge in extended sailings of 10 days or longer to exotic locales on high-end cruise ships. Do you know who (usually) does not? Single people in their 20s-50s.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but it’s a numbers game out here.  If you want to ensure that your sailing will be loaded with lovely lurkers, select a trip of 8 days or less on a non-pretentious cruise line that can be booked for a reasonable price.

READ MORE:  9 Best Cruise Lines For Singles

If you want to avoid being overrun with families as kids take over the lido deck, choose a cruise that sails while kids are still in school. You won’t completely avoid married couples and pint-sized pirates altogether, but the numbers will be way more in your favor.

Another pro tip is to remember that two to four-day sailings will likely be your weekend warriors, often comprised of a heavier drinking and party crowd. Grab a cocktail and claim your place on the dance floor if that’s your thing.

On five to eight-day sailings, your fellow sailors are likely to be of a (slightly) more mature and reserved variety.

Researching Cruise Lines

Research is the first step in planning a  solo cruise . Cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America offer different experiences, amenities, and  solo traveler  programs. You are not limited to just mass-market sailings, even luxury cruise lines offer  solo rates  (which typically offer fewer people onboard).

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for their studio staterooms catering to solo cruisers, which removes the single supplement fee. Royal Caribbean also provides studio staterooms designed for solo travelers, ensuring value and comfort without the additional cost of single supplements.

Selecting the Right Stateroom

Choosing the right stateroom is crucial for a  solo cruiser’s  comfort and enjoyment. The options vary from interior rooms to balconies and suites.

Solo travelers might consider the following factors:

  • Location : Proximity to the ship’s amenities.
  • View : Whether one prefers an ocean view or not.
  • Size : Space and layout that meets personal comfort levels.

Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, offer staterooms specifically designed for solo passengers, providing an appropriately sized living space but also helping solo cruisers avoid the single supplement.

Understanding the Single Supplement

First, you should know that cruise line rates are based on double occupancy and cruise ship staterooms are designed for two people. The single supplement is a fee that cruise lines charge when a solo traveler occupies that cabin.

For instance, if you book a balcony stateroom for one person as a solo cruiser, you will be charged the rate for two people (while only paying the port taxes for one person).

Solo cruisers should look for promotions or specific sailings where the single supplement is reduced or waived.

A website that has been around for years, helping the solo cruiser, is  CruisePlum.com .

Holland America occasionally offers a reduced single supplement, making it advantageous for solo cruisers to monitor such deals. Always review the pricing structure of your chosen cruise line to ensure you receive the most cost-effective option for your solo adventure.

Onboard Experience for Solo Travelers

For individuals traveling alone, cruising provides a unique chance to indulge without judgment, connect with like-minded people, and participate in activities not limited by others.

Dining Options and Social Meals

Solo travelers  have various dining options, from high-end specialty restaurants to casual buffets.

Many cruise lines cater to singles by offering  social dining tables  where guests can meet and enjoy meals, facilitating connections and shared experiences. For instance, Silversea Cruises provides an elegant dining experience where solo guests can mingle and partake in gourmet meals in a group setting.

Solo Cabins and Lounges

Solo staterooms , explicitly designed for single travelers, are becoming a staple on many ships. These cabins are often smaller, more affordable, and purposefully located to grant easy access to the ship’s amenities.

For example, the  studio lounges  are exclusive social spaces where solo cruisers can relax, enjoy a drink, and meet other guests without a single supplement fee. Norwegian Bliss has a great solo studio lounge.

Onboard Activities and Entertainment

The variety of  onboard activities  ensures that there’s something for every solo traveler. They can indulge in spa treatments, attend fitness classes, or partake in enrichment lectures. In the evening, the ship comes alive with many  entertainment options , including Broadway-style shows, live music, and themed parties, which are excellent for solo travelers to enjoy and socialize.

Cruises for Solo Travelers

Several cruise lines offer solo cruise rates if you plan to go on a cruise alone. These lines include Virgin Voyages (Scarlet Lady) and Celebrity Cruises (Edge class ships like Celebrity Beyond).

Additionally, some river cruises in the US and Europe offer reduced cruise fares for solo travelers.

(Note: Check each cabin category with the cruise ship you want to sail or turn the hard work over to a travel agent.)

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Studios

Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered in accommodating solo travelers with their innovative  Studios . Specifically designed for those cruising alone, Studios eliminates the need for a single supplement and offers a private space for guests to chill and meet other solo travelers.

Royal Caribbean’s Single Staterooms

Royal Caribbean  caters to individuals exploring the seas independently with a range of  single staterooms  onboard select ships. These accommodations include interior and balcony options, providing a comfortable retreat without worrying about additional fees for traveling alone.

Ships like  Harmony of the Seas  offer cozy hideaways starting at about 96 square feet, while options like studio balcony rooms treat guests to private outdoor spaces.

Cunard and Holland America

The tradition-rich  Cunard  offers solo travelers an elegant experience with several single cabins on its famed ocean liners.  Holland America Line  similarly accommodates solo guests with a mix of stateroom options, providing a peaceful stay amidst a wealth of onboard activities.

Both cruise lines have developed a reputation for a refined cruise experience and feature programs and amenities that make solo travel inviting and enjoyable.

Making the Most of Shore Excursions

Solo travelers can enhance their cruise experience by strategically selecting shore excursions and networking with other solo cruisers. This way, they discover new destinations and connect with like-minded individuals.

Choosing Excursions for Solo Travelers

Solo cruisers should select shore excursions that cater to their interests and allow flexibility. They can benefit from joining small group tours, which typically provide a more personalized experience, making interacting with fellow participants and guides easier.

For instance, a guided historical tour can offer a deep dive into the destination’s culture and history. Solo travelers might also consider activity-based excursions – like snorkeling or a cooking class – as they often encourage camaraderie among participants.

Networking with Fellow Solo Cruisers

Shore excursions are an excellent opportunity for solo cruisers to meet and engage with others. Onboard mixers and group activities are designed to help solo travelers connect before disembarking. Solo cruisers can take advantage of these pre-shore excursion gatherings to find other solo travelers with similar interests.

Engaging with fellow solo cruisers in this way can form groups for shared shore excursions, which enhances the personal experience and offers savings compared to going alone.

Overcoming the Solo Travel Challenges

Embarking on a solo cruise adventure can be as exhilarating as it is daunting, with single supplement fees and the quest for camaraderie being among the primary concerns. This section offers concrete strategies for solo cruisers to tackle these challenges.

Dealing with Single Supplement Fees

Solo travelers often face the challenge of the  single supplement fee , an additional charge levied on individuals occupying a cabin designed for two. To mitigate this cost, travelers can:

  • Seek Out Special Offers:  Some cruise lines provide promotions that reduce or waive the single supplement fee, making cruising more affordable for solo passengers.
  • Choose Cruise Lines That Cater to Solos:  Opt for cruise lines offering  solo cabins  specifically designed for one person and priced accordingly, such as those available on Royal Caribbean ships.

Finding Your Community Onboard

Building a community onboard is crucial for solo cruisers and can greatly enhance the cruise experience.

Here are ways to connect with other solo passengers:

  • Join Organized Activities:  Participate in activities designed to bring passengers together. Meet-and-greets, group excursions, and themed events are ideal for connecting with fellow cruisers.
  • Utilize Social Dining Options:  Request to be seated at communal tables in the main dining room, which is an effective way to meet other single cruisers.

Special Programs for Singles

Cruise lines increasingly cater to single travelers through special programs focusing on social interaction and enjoyment. These offerings provide a welcoming environment for those cruising solo to meet like-minded passengers and participate in curated activities.

Hosted Social Events

Many cruise lines organize  hosted social events  specifically for single travelers. For example, some cruises feature cocktail receptions that allow singles to mingle in a relaxed setting.

They can attend singles mixers or theme nights to break the ice and foster community. Royal Caribbean offers events where solo cruisers can meet with the cruise director and crew members, enhancing their onboard experience.

Singles Cruises and Theme Cruises

Singles cruises  are specially tailored voyages that cater to individuals traveling alone. These cruises often have dedicated  social spaces  where singles can come together and socialize.  Theme cruises  take this concept further by revolving around a specific interest or activity, making it easier for solo travelers to find others with similar interests.

For instance, a cruise line might offer a dance-themed cruise where singles can learn new skills while connecting with fellow dance enthusiasts.

Themed Sailings or Full Ship Charters

Theme cruises are another great option for single cruisers.  I admit that I was already a well-seasoned cruiser before I found out how many theme cruise options were available.

Unlike a partial charter or the “cruise within a cruise” format, a theme cruise is typically a third-party organization chartering the entire ship for a set amount of days and destinations.

The host organization charters the ship, books the entertainment, schedules the activities, and markets the sailing to the appropriate demographic.

Could you imagine being a superfan of country music, classical rock, or electronic dance music and boarding a ship of 3,000 like-minded enthusiasts for a dream vacation?

There are wall-to-wall performances by some of your favorite acts, with the price of each show already built into your cruise fare.

Combine that with some of the most exotic destinations on the planet, and you have a single cruiser’s paradise.   Themes for these getaways can range from music and comedy to cryptocurrency and comic books.

There are countless organizers of these vacations, but check out sixthman.net for a one-stop shop on more than a dozen “ festivals at sea .”

Tips for Solo Cruising

Cruising solo offers an enriching experience for those who seek an independent adventure. Here are some tips to ensure they enjoy their vacation to the fullest:

  • Choosing the Right Cruise Line : Some cruise lines cater specifically to solo travelers, offering single cabins and reduced single supplements. Ensure they pick a cruise that aligns with their preferences.
  • Connecting with Others : Solo cruisers should take advantage of the activities and social events designed for single passengers. This can be a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded travelers.
  • Planning the Budget : Solo cruisers should check if their cruise package includes solo-friendly amenities and services to avoid unexpected expenses. Understanding all costs involved is critical to planning a stress-free trip.
  • Safety First : They should familiarize themselves with the ship’s layout and safety protocols. It’s also advisable to keep a copy of their passport and important documents separate from the originals.
  • Packing Smart : A solo traveler must pack items that cater to their comfort and entertainment. This may include books, a journal, or any tech gadgets that they prefer.
  • Staying Connected : While some prefer to unplug, others may purchase WiFi to keep in touch with loved ones or manage work commitments during their sea days.
  • Be a heavy presence in social media groups:  Nowadays, almost every sailing has a dedicated roll call on the Cruise Critic message boards and Shipmate cruise app, or a Facebook group. These are invaluable ways to connect with fellow cruise guests before you sail.
  • Step out of your comfort zone on day one:  Singles and solo cruisers will typically look to make connections on the first day to set the tone for the rest of the journey. Grab a drink and jump right into the mix so you aren’t trying to wiggle your way into already-established social circles later in the cruise.
  • A little liquid courage is okay , but don’t overdo it or other single cruisers will be bonding over the kick they are all getting out of the overtly inebriated sailor.

By preparing in advance and embracing the freedom of solo travel, cruisers will surely have an unforgettable vacation while cruising single.

As you can see, there is no shortage of options for you as a single or solo cruiser. Young, old, recently divorced, or never married – there are many pathways for you to have an absolute blast on your next cruise.

Sitting around and waiting for the perfect opportunity is rarely productive, and cruising is no different.

They say the best things are on the other side of fear, so step out of your comfort zone, find your way onto one of these magnificent cruise ships, and make some lifelong memories.

Solo Cruises: The Ultimate Guide to Cruising Solo

Last updated: May 15th, 2024

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

Celebrity Cruises has beautiful single staterooms, many with a private veranda, and offers hosted social events for solo travelers.

You’ll find a vast range of excursions on offer, many of which are the perfect bonding opportunity for anybody looking to make new friends, and a safe, inclusive environment on board.

Bartender putting on a show at the Martini Bar

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

Single Staterooms on Celebrity Silhouette and all Edge-series Ships

Celebrity Apex cruise ship

Celebrity Apex

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. Not only are single staterooms spacious, but they’re also outfitted with the same modern, sleek design and luxurious amenities as all staterooms on Celebrity’s ships.

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

What Are The Best Cruises For Solo Travelers?

View of the Sky Lounge

The best cruises for solo travelers depend on the experiences you most want out of a vacation.

Are you a thrill-seeker looking to cross items off your bucket list? Want to see the capital cities of Europe without hotel-hopping and planning all your own accommodations and train travel? Are you more interested in hiking or history?

Celebrity has crafted different itineraries for travelers of all kinds, from introverts who prefer fewer social activities to extroverts who thrive on meeting new people.

Man snorkeling in St Croix

Craving time in the sun against the backdrop of white sand beaches and crystalline waters? Consider a 7- or 10-night Caribbean cruise , where snorkeling and diving shore excursions are bound to introduce you to people with similar interests and a sense of adventure.

If you’re a history buff, tour thousand-year-old churches in Italy or see the ancient ruins of Greece up close.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

Celebrity’s cruises have onboard activities to suit everyone, from thrilling entertainment and live music to guest speaker series and guided meditations.

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

People playing casino

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

Making the Most of Your Single Cruise Experience

Going on a single cruise can be an excellent way to meet new people, explore new places, and have a fun and exciting vacation. However, to make the most of your single cruise experience, you must be prepared and know what to expect. Here are some tips and advice on maximizing your single cruise experience.

Tips and Advice on Maximizing the Single Cruise Experience

  • Navigating the Right Voyage : Scout cruises are explicitly designed with the solo traveler in mind or those known for their vibrant, diverse passenger mix. Contemplate joining a singles-centric group cruise or securing a private haven on a singles-only deck for an optimized experience.
  • Immersion in Onboard Revelries : Seize the abundance of onboard activities and social events — from the rhythm of dance classes to the intellectual challenge of trivia games to the warm camaraderie of group dinners. These are your bridges to connect with fellow voyagers and immerse yourself in the shared joy of discovery.
  • Embrace the Uncharted : Step boldly beyond the familiar borders of your comfort zone. This voyage is your golden ticket to discover unexplored terrains, savor exotic flavors, and form bonds with newfound companions.
  • Maintaining Anchors Back Home : Amidst the thrill of new encounters and experiences, remember the importance of staying tethered to your loved ones back on the shore. Regular check-ins reassure them of your safety and allow you to share the highlights of your sea-faring adventure, making them part of your journey, even from afar.

Dealing with Potential Challenges: Loneliness, Safety, etc.

  • Loneliness : It’s natural to feel lonely or homesick; especially when traveling alone. To combat this, try to stay busy and participate in onboard activities. You can also reach out to other single passengers and make plans to explore the ports together.
  • Safety : While cruises are generally safe, taking precautions and recognizing your surroundings is essential. Leave your belongings unattended, avoid walking alone at night, and follow the ship’s safety guidelines.
  • Seasickness : If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure to bring medication with you. With less motion, you can also book a cabin in the middle of the ship.

Personal Stories from Successful Single Cruisers

Single Cruises Post-Pandemic

If you’re a single traveler searching for a unique vacation experience, a single cruise might be just what you need. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the cruise industry, but now that the world is returning to regular, single cruises are making a comeback.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Cruise Industry and Single Cruises

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the cruise industry hard. Many cruises were canceled, and cruise lines had to implement new safety measures and protocols to secure the safety of their passengers and crew. Single cruises were no exception, and many were canceled or postponed.

However, as the world starts to recover from the pandemic, the cruise industry is slowly beginning to bounce back. Single cruises are becoming more popular as people look for unique and safe ways to travel.

Safety Measures and Protocols for Single Cruisers in the Post-Pandemic World

The safety of passengers and crew is the top priority for cruise lines. As a single cruiser, you can expect to see a range of safety measures and protocols to ensure your safety while on board.

Some safety measures you can expect include mandatory COVID-19 testing before boarding, enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols, and social distancing measures. You may also be required to wear a mask in some regions of the ship, such as in enclosed spaces or when near others.

The Resurgence of Single Cruises and Future Predictions

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, single cruises are making a comeback. As more people get vaccinated, and the world returns to normal, the demand for single cruises is expected to increase.

We can expect to witness more single cruises and unique and exciting itineraries offered by cruise lines. Whether you’re searching for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure-packed trip, there’s a single cruise.

Single cruises are a great way to meet new people, explore new destinations, and have a unique vacation experience. With the safety measures and protocols, you can enjoy your single cruise with peace of mind; your safety is the top priority.

BONUS: Finding Your Perfect Retreat on the High Seas

When it comes to cruising, selecting the right stateroom can profoundly influence your overall experience. But for those sailing solo, the array of choices can seem both enticing and overwhelming. Let’s navigate through the most popular options and how they align with the solo cruiser’s needs.

1. Unraveling the Stateroom Spectrum

nside cabins are the most budget-friendly, giving you a cozy space to rest after a long day of adventures. However, if you crave a little sunshine and ocean breeze, Oceanview cabins provide a window or porthole for that daily dose of the endless blue horizon.

For those seeking to merge indoor comfort with outdoor luxury, Balcony cabins are a perfect match. Wake up with the sound of the waves and enjoy your morning coffee with a sea view.

However, if you’re willing to splurge and indulge in opulence, Suite accommodations are your go-to. These spacious rooms come with added amenities, often including exclusive access to certain areas of the ship or premium in-room services.

2. A Peek into Exclusive Programs: Club Orange and More

Holland America’s Club Orange is a great example of how some cruise lines enhance the stateroom experience. With this exclusive program, members enjoy myriad benefits including a dedicated concierge line, complimentary stateroom upgrades, and a premium in-room breakfast menu.

3. Solo Staterooms

Perhaps one of the most enticing options for the solo traveler is the advent of single staterooms. With the increasing popularity of single cruises, more cruise lines are catering to solo travelers. Celebrity Cruises has been particularly attentive with ships like Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond, and Celebrity Ascent.

These ships offer personal spaces tailor-made for solo passengers, ensuring they’re distanced from the high-energy party decks and allowing a tranquil retreat.

“Traveling solo on a cruise allows you to steer your own course and set your own pace.” — Anonymous

4. Membership Benefits

Having exclusive access to benefits can substantially elevate your cruise experience. Apart from the complimentary stateroom upgrades and dedicated concierge services mentioned earlier, there’s also skip-the-line priority access. Solo cabins, which are in high demand, often provide access to the Studio Lounge – a wonderful hub for socializing with fellow solo cruisers.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line: Pioneering Single Cruising

Norwegian Cruise Line deserves a special mention for its innovative approach. Recognizing the unique needs of solo travelers early on, it became the first cruise line to construct staterooms and communal areas expressly for single cruisers.

6. More than Just Meals

A cruise isn’t complete without indulging in the diverse dining options available. Beyond the usual buffet, there’s a world of upscale dining waiting to be explored. Consider dining alfresco in the ship’s steakhouse or experiencing the rich flavors at the Japanese hibachi r estaurant. And for those morning caffeine fixes or evening wind-downs, finding a Starbucks on board can be the cherry on top.

Single or just need some alone time welcome aboard….

Single? Can’t find that special someone, or can’t seem to wrangle a friend to travel with you? Good! To us, cruising solo isn’t something you do because you’ve run out of other options — it’s actually Plan A.

Our voyages cater to singles, with a host of onboard entertainment options designed to help you meet other Sailors. And since we’re an adults-only cruise line, it’s perfect for single solo travelers who want to disconnect from their daily routine and connect with other like-minded Sailors over DJ tunes at our nightclub, drinking games in our Korean BBQ restaurant, group fitness classes, and events like our shipwide bar crawl. Here’s why Virgin Voyages is one of the best singles cruises for solo Sailors looking for the ultimate adult getaway.

Finding the best cruises for singles & solo travelers

It might sound easier to plan a solo cruise than one with a bunch of friends , because you don’t need input from six other people. It’s just you. That doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t plan ahead. From browsing the ideal solo traveler destinations to joining a singles cruise community online, and making sure you take advantage of our solo cabins, these are a few singles cruise tips to keep in mind before you book .

Browse Our Beach Getaways

Deciding what ports to visit is the first step of booking a solo cruise, and it probably comes as no surprise that it’s tough to beat a beach destination. Our Caribbean cruises are perfect for single and solo travelers, with plenty of opportunities to catch some rays, show off that tan, and connect with fellow Sailors at a margarita bar. You’ll especially want to make sure to visit Bimini, our exclusive beach club in the Bahamas, where you can vibe to DJ beats, indulge in snacks, and chill on our private beach.

Sign up for our Sail & Save email alert

To get the best deals on our singles cruises, join our Sailor community and sign up for our Sail & Save email alert. You’ll be able to score last-minute vacations deals starting as low as $99 per Sailor per night.

Join Singles Travel Communities Online

These communities, usually found on Facebook, are great resources for getting curated lists of the best singles cruises for women , and men, and tips on how to make the most of them.

Activities & Events to Meet People on a Cruise

Singles cruises aren’t just about romance and hook up culture. They’re about making meaningful connections and memories with other Sailors, whether it’s dancing at The Manor, winning big at the Casino , sharing world-class cuisine at one of our onboard eateries , or enjoying one of our signature shows with a new friend. Our dedicated singles events also create an organic, stress-free way to meet other solo Sailors.

Virgin Voyage Mobile App

It all starts here. Our mobile app is designed to allow Sailors to easily book onboard events , as well as connect remotely with other Sailors .

Singles Meetup & Events

In addition to our regular calendar of shipwide social events, we also offer meetups designed specifically for single Sailors, like cocktail hours and pub crawls .

Communal Dining

On Virgin Voyages, sailing solo doesn’t mean dining solo. Our innovative Korean BBQ restaurant, Gunbae, is famous for its communal dining concept. Indulge not only in delicious Korean cuisine, but also fun drinking games with new friends.

Entertainment & Casino

Some of our onboard special events are perfect for single and solo travelers looking to cut loose and have a blast with their fellow Sailors, as well as for taking selfies while on your cruise . Our PJ Party, pub crawl, and Scarlet Night are great opportunities to relax your inhibitions and meet new people . Our Casino is also an ideal option for bonding with the Sailor next to you over shared success or failure.

Group Fitness Classes

Mixing and mingling with other Sailors doesn’t only happen at bars and restaurants. It can also happen during our group fitness classes, perfect for connecting Sailors who share a love of health and wellness .

Take a Tour

The social environment doesn’t evaporate once you leave the ship, either. Arguably, our Shore Things are the best way to connect with other Sailors. Taking a group tour gives you the opportunity to explore a new destination with other travelers – whether or not they’re solo – and have a shared experience you can bring back to the ship.

Singles & solo travelers love Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages might not be an exclusively singles cruise, but as an adult-only cruise line, we pride ourselves on catering to the needs of our solo Sailors looking to forge connections in a mature environment. That’s evident in several aspects of the ship, from our bar and restaurant atmosphere to our entertainment options to our cabin mood lighting. We’re pleased to say – Sailors seem to agree.

Many have left rave solo cruising reviews online lauding the singles cruise experience, speaking fondly of memorable moments created onboard and the people they still keep in touch with. Indeed, many singles love traveling with us so much, they even return for second, third, and fourth voyages.

Plan & book your singles cruise for solo travelers

On Virgin Voyages, “solo” doesn’t mean “alone,” and “single,” doesn’t mean “lonely”. We pride ourselves on being one of the top cruises for solo and single Sailors . Rather than fly to a destination by yourself and truly go at it alone, why not book a cruise filled with other like minded travelers, give yourself the chance to meet new people, and make the journey as fun as the destination itself?

Even if you’re sailing solo, you’re not sailing alone. We’re here to make voyaging as seamless as possible, so don’t hesitate to contact our Sailor Services team if you need any assistance booking your cruise cabin, flights, or hotel .

Table of Contents

Is Carnival Cruise Line Good For Singles?

Yes, Carnival Cruise Line can be a good option for singles, especially for younger adults in their 20s and 30s.

While Carnival doesn’t specifically cater to solo travelers, their ships attract a young and lively crowd, ensuring that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded individuals.

When choosing a Carnival singles cruise, you may want to consider shorter cruises. These tend to be more popular among groups of single friends, particularly during the spring break season.

These shorter trips allow for a higher energy atmosphere and make it easier for you to find fellow solo travelers to mingle with.

Carnival cruise ships are known as “fun ships,” so expect plenty of entertainment options to keep you busy. Besides the wide array of dining choices, you’ll have access to activities such as:

  • Live music and dance performances
  • Comedy shows
  • Poolside parties
  • Themed nights

When it comes to accommodations, Carnival offers a variety of cabin options to suit your needs and budget. While they don’t have specific solo cabins, there are a range of affordable stateroom choices that can work for single travelers.

In summary, if you’re a single person looking for a fun and lively atmosphere while cruising, Carnival Cruise Line can be a great choice.

Consider opting for a shorter cruise during popular travel seasons to maximize your chances of meeting fellow singles and making new friends.

  • Themed parties and events
  • Singles meet-and-greets

Best Cruises for Singles over 50

  • Lounge events for mingling
  • Special-interest clubs and groups
  • Cooking, art, or photography classes
  • Lectures and workshops
  • Health and wellness activities

This way, you can be confident that your cruise experience will provide you with the right atmosphere and activities for making lasting memories and connections.

Bars on a cruise

Carnival Cruise Singles Mixers

Carnival Cruise offers an excellent opportunity for solo travelers looking to socialize and meet new people on their cruise vacations. Make sure to take advantage of their singles mixers held on the first night of your cruise.

Generally, these mixers take place in one of the bars on board the ship and cater to specific demographics, such as LGBTQ singles or singles over 40.

You may also find mixers that are more broadly targeted to solo travelers or independent travelers.

To ensure you don’t miss out, check the FunTimes program, which will provide information on the time and venue for these mixers. In addition, consider joining relevant Facebook groups for your sailing to connect with other singles before your cruise even begins.

During the mixers, be open to socializing and making new connections. Meeting fellow solo travelers may lead to friendships, activity partners, or even romantic interests during your cruise.

Remember to attend other events and activities as well, such as dance lessons or trivia nights, where you can further broaden your social circle on board.

By participating in Carnival Cruise Singles Mixers, you will not only enhance your cruise experience but also create lifelong memories and connections with fellow travelers.

Do Carnival Cruises Have Single Occupancy Rooms?

Unfortunately, Carnival Cruise Lines do not offer single occupancy rooms on their ships. All rooms are designed for double occupancy, which means as a solo traveler, you would have to book a double occupancy room and pay the full rate for that room.

This price is the same as if two people were booked in the room.

Carnival Cruise Line is the only mainstream cruise line that sails regularly in the Caribbean and does not have single occupancy cabins on any of their 23 ships. However, there’s still plenty to do and experience as a solo traveler on a Carnival cruise.

When selecting a stateroom for your cruise, there are different types and locations to choose from, such as Interior, Ocean View, Balcony, or Suite. Here’s a brief overview of the different types of staterooms:

  • Interior staterooms : The most affordable option, ideal for sensitive sleepers who prefer quieter rooms away from activities. These rooms are perfect for unwinding after a long day of fun.
  • Ocean View staterooms : Similar to Interior staterooms but with the added benefit of a window for a view of the ocean or the ship’s surroundings.
  • Balcony staterooms : These rooms offer private outdoor space, allowing you to enjoy the fresh sea air and stunning views from the comfort of your own room.
  • Suite staterooms : The most luxurious choice, suites are larger and often come with additional amenities and services, such as priority check-in and a personal concierge.

It’s important to keep in mind that as a solo traveler on a Carnival cruise, you will need to pay a supplement to have a double stateroom to yourself.

This supplement is often 100%, meaning you have no option but to pay for two people.

Despite this, you can still enjoy a variety of activities, entertainment, and dining options onboard, making your cruise experience memorable and enjoyable.

Will You Get Laid on a Carnival Cruise?

It’s possible to hook up on a Carnival cruise, but there’s no guarantee it will happen. Keep in mind that people can, and do, hook up with people they meet on cruises.

Carnival’s drink packages are popular, and the nightclubs often stay active long into the night.

However, it’s essential to stay safe and not engage in any behavior you wouldn’t normally do on land.

Going on a singles cruise geared towards singles in their 20s and 30s may increase your chances of meeting like-minded individuals since these cruises generally attract younger adults.

Plus, with 2000 to 5000+ passengers on board, you’ll likely come across several solo travelers to mingle with.

To improve your chances of meeting someone, consider the following tips:

  • Attend events specifically designed for singles.
  • Strike up conversations with new people in bars or restaurants.
  • Dress appropriately for themed parties.
  • Be open-minded and approachable.

While on the cruise, remember that crew members are generally off-limits. They’re typically young, international, and attractive, but hooking up with the crew is typically not allowed .

Lastly, focus on having fun and making new connections. Whether or not you end up hooking up during your Carnival cruise, the experience will still be memorable and enjoyable.

Does Tinder Work on a Carnival Cruise Ship?

Yes, Tinder can work on a Carnival Cruise Ship. However, it’s important to note that the app is location-based and requires an internet connection to function.

To use Tinder on the ship, you’ll need to purchase a Carnival Wi-Fi package. Keep in mind that the quality and availability of the internet connection may vary depending on your location and the ship’s itinerary.

As a Tinder user, you should be aware that certain cruise lines may have restrictions on which apps can be used on their Wi-Fi network.

While Tinder is an app for mature audiences, it might fall under such restrictions on some cruise lines. Royal Caribbean, for example, offers more flexibility with two packages: Surf and Surf + Stream.

On a singles cruise, you might want to consider participating in the organized activities and excursions designed specifically for singles who want to meet new people.

Carnival, as well as other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line, organize singles cruises that include hosted meet-ups and activities for single travelers .

In summary, using Tinder on a Carnival Cruise Ship is possible as long as you have an internet connection.

Be prepared for potential app restrictions or network limitations and consider taking part in the available singles activities on board to maximize your chances of meeting new people.

All the Single Ladies: Cruising Is Perfect for Bachelor Travelers

Cruises are notoriously romantic, featuring candlelit dinners, colorful sunsets and the chance to visit some of the most honeymoon-friendly destinations all over the world. What about single travelers? Whether passengers are traveling alone or happen to be the third wheel, cruising makes it easy to meet new people - and who knows, a future spouse may be just on the other side of the boat.

Singles-only nights

While speed dating may seem like a quick and easy way to get to know a stranger, cruises dress up the rat race with evening cocktail parties and singles-only events for those who want to connect with someone during their cruise vacation. Rather than finding a soulmate at the top of the Eiffel Tower during a European cruise , why not stay onboard for the chance to meet another cruising enthusiast?

Additionally, passengers can grab a dancing partner during any number of these singles-only parties to see whether there's any real chemistry.

Onboard activities catered to singles

Tennis courts and yoga classes cater to groups of people, and passengers traveling alone can get fit while working up a sweat with new friends. After exercising, singles can enjoy a casual, healthy lunch at the Sanctuary , which is available only for adults and lends a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for getting to know new people.

If passengers want to enjoy more intimate social interactions, they should reserve a spot in a cooking class or wine tasting session, which is a sure-fire way to find someone who shares the same passion for food.

Of course, singles who go to the casino are nearly guaranteed to make new friends and may want to try their luck asking someone special out for a romantic dinner later during the cruise vacation.

Leave the ship with new friends

Caribbean shore excursions are also a great way to meet people during a cruise, whether passengers are going scuba diving, hiking or simply walking around seaside villages. Based on the activities they choose, passengers can share an afternoon with like-minded travelers who love the outdoors.

Have a flair for European art? Take a shore excursion to Venice , Italy, where cruisers will have an excuse to talk about Renoir with other passengers and potentially find a new traveling buddy for cruises in the future.

I've sailed on 50 cruises. Here are 4 I'd book again as someone without kids.

  • I've been on over 50 cruises with eight different lines and almost always travel without kids .
  • I love Virgin Voyages since the line is dedicated to its adults-only ships.
  • Celebrity Cruises is also a great adult-centric cruise with elevated dining and entertainment.

Insider Today

I've been cruising for over a decade and in that time, I've sailed on more than 50 ocean ships across eight different cruise lines .

Since I don't have kids and rarely travel with children, I've learned that some cruise lines cater to adults better than others.

Here are my top four cruises to book for an adults-only vacation .

I love Virgin Voyages for its clear adults-only policy.

singles activities on cruise ships

Virgin Voyages is one of the few major ocean cruise lines that does not allow children under 18, which I enjoy.

The Richard Branson-owned brand is known for its beautiful Lady Ships, which have ample outdoor space and nightclubs and party spots inside.

Unlike other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages' dining concept is truly unique.

You won't find massive rooms or long buffet lines. Instead, the ships have specialty restaurants, including an Italian eatery and a stunning steak house, which are all included in the cruise fare.

I love the line's fast-casual pizza spot, but my favorite place to eat on a Virgin Voyages cruise is Gunbae. The Korean barbecue-inspired restaurant has shared tables with grills in the center and delicious food.

Disney Cruise Line is perfect for adults looking for some childhood nostalgia.

singles activities on cruise ships

I love going to Disney theme parks , so it's no surprise that I also love Disney Cruise Line.

The brand definitely leans more into family travel, but there are plenty of dedicated adults-only areas on each of the line's ships.

One of my favorite places to hang out on the Dream or Fantasy ships is Meridian, an adults-only bar nestled between Palo and Remy, the two adults-only dining options.

This space has great views of the ocean and incredible bartenders who can shake or stir up just about anything.

After the sun goes down, the party really gets started at the nightclubs on the Disney ships . On a recent sailing on the Magic, I watched game shows, sang karaoke, and played trivia.

Celebrity Cruises is a great option for luxury sailing.

singles activities on cruise ships

I recently tried out Celebrity Cruises for the first time, and it was a luxurious step up from its family-friendly sister company, Royal Caribbean . The cruise line is known for its beautifully decorated ships, intimate spaces, and over-the-top entertainment.

While sailing on the Ascent ship, I spent a lot of time at the Sunset Bar, which features Mediterranean-style drinks , incredible views, and live music in the evenings.

I also loved watching live shows in the theater every night. They combined acrobatics, magic tricks, dancing, and singing into spectacular events that left my jaw on the floor.

Norwegian Cruise Line is perfect for younger adults looking for a fun time.

singles activities on cruise ships

I've sailed with Norwegian Cruise Line a few times, and I think it's the perfect brand for young adults. The ships are easy to navigate and feature some of the best staterooms at sea, with plenty of storage.

The top decks of the line's newer ships, like Prima and Viva, feature epic water slides, a go-kart track , and infinity pools overlooking the ocean.

It's certainly geared toward the young at heart, but I think the spaces are ideal for anyone looking for a good mix of fun and relaxation.

Which cruise lines have single cabins?

singles activities on cruise ships

If you are a solo or single traveller looking to cruise but you don’t want to have to fork our double for a double stateroom, take a look at our luxury cruise line partners. They offer luxury solo cabins on select ships!

However, when looking for solo cabins, be aware of the exclusivity and rarity as not all cruise lines offer them. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of cruise lines with single occupancy staterooms.

Cunard solo cruise suites

Cunard’s Single Ocean View Staterooms radiate comfort and prioritise, making their luxury cabins feel like a home away from home. Single suites come alongside a complimentary bottle of champagne, Penhaligon luxury toiletries and 24-hour room service. If you’re staying aboard the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth, you'll enjoy access to your own spacious single staterooms with a sense of opulence and luxury flourishing.

Cunard solo cabin

Cunard also offers you the opportunity to book a Britannia Double Stateroom for a variable single supplement. That is, if you prefer a more spacious cabin and desire larger storage room.

Holland America solo cruise suites

If you are a solo traveller and want to avoid paying a solo supplement, take a look at ships that offer solo suites on Holland America. Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam are the specific ships that prioritise ensuring every guest has a comfortable stay ,no matter whether they’re cruising alone or together. As such, these ships offer a private space for each individual traveller.

Actually, Holland America stands out for solo travellers, as they have created a scheme to help solo cruisers meet: the Single Partners Programme. Activities such as fitness classes, themed competitions and cooking demonstrations create a social environment and a lively atmosphere on board, allowing solo travellers to form bonds and memories that can last a lifetime.

But be warned! Holland America solo cabins require booking far in advance due to their restricted availability and popularity!

Oceania Cruises solo cruise suites

Oceania Cruises offer a solo traveller experience and solo travellers have a wide range of solo cabins to choose from in their signature small-ship luxury. Aboard Vista, there are Level Solo Veranda Staterooms available, offering a spacious and luxury space for single cruisers, whilst still having access to the Concierge Lounge to mix and mingle with fellow sailors.

Oceania Cruises solo cabin

Every Solo Stateroom has all the same amenities a single cruise guest would have access to. Oceania Cruises guests can enjoy the same sumptuous service whether they’re in a pair or on their own.

Silversea solo cruise suites

Silversea wants to encourage solo travellers and welcome them on board their range of intimate ships; single supplements start at only 25% on select voyages.

Silversea stateroom

All inclusive fares are standard, meaning solo and single guests will have access to a personal butler service and breathtaking ocean views. There are multiple fine dining options on board, with the option to dine with fellow cruisers should you wish to. Of course, there is a wide selection of sophisticated entertainment and enrichment in the daytime and evening for all to enjoy and create lasting memories.

River cruising solo cabins

River cruising allows you to visit top destinations without the hustle and bustle, as the ships are often smaller, allowing solo travellers to network with others whilst still having the opportunity to have a relaxed trip.

On board most of the Emerald river Cruises Star-Ships, there are single occupancy staterooms available. Select star-ships that go through the river Danube, Rhine and Rhone, come with comfortable and tastefully appointed cabins that look out on beautiful views worldwide, creating the perfect space for solo travellers. Again, they sell out quickly.

Solo supplement rates are available for those not lucky enough to secure a single cabin.

Riverside Luxury Cruises solo cruise cabins

Certain cruise lines that Panache Cruises partners with do not offer solo cabins, but instead offer a double cabin with no solo supplements. This means solo cruisers only have to pay for solo occupancy, yet can enjoy the luxury of a double cabin.

Riverside Mozart suite

For example, on board the Riverside luxury cruises , Harmony and Melody suites are double suites measuring at 220 square feet, creating the perfect spacious suites for solo travellers. The Riverside Harmony suite is on board the Mozart ship, and the Riverside Melody suite is onboard the Ravel and Debussy ships.

Celebrity solo suites

Celebrity Edge Single Staterooms offer all the same amenities and services as a double stateroom, including the exclusive  eXhale® bedding and cashmere mattress. Solo cruisers are not missing out! Alongside that, solo cruisers also have access to premium, custom-blended bath products and 100% cotton plush bath towels and robes, allowing you to immerse yourself in luxury and replenish the body and the mind in the space of your very own private space.

Celebrity Cruises solo cabin

Similarly, Celebrity Silhouette ships offer four inside single staterooms which have been perfectly designed and proportioned to provide you with luxury and maximum comfort. This all comes in company with the luxury amenities and services offered with double staterooms. For those who love to travel and explore the world via the water, Celebrity offers the ideal modern cabin for you: The Edge Single Infinite Veranda. You’ll find yourself right to the water’s edge, offering open access to the sea at the touch of a button.

Solo cruisers, join our Solo Cruisers Facebook community to meet likeminded solo cruisers!

Royal Caribbean cruise ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most activity-packed, megaresort-like Royal Caribbean cruise ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships are, by nature, the Royal Caribbean ships with the most pools, waterslides and other deck-top activities, as well as the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms. They have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet as well as the most cabins and suites — and the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 6,000 passengers or more, the biggest Royal Caribbean ships are truly massive resorts like you find at such landlocked destinations as Orlando and Las Vegas. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Royal Caribbean ships for you.

Still, Royal Caribbean doesn't just operate massive vessels. The Miami-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half or a third of the size of Royal Caribbean's biggest ships. These ships, notably, have far fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ships.

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Royal Caribbean ship?

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas . Measuring 248,663 gross tons, it's not only the biggest Royal Caribbean ship but also the biggest cruise ship ever built by any line. It's loaded with more bars, restaurants, theaters and deck-top attractions than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that are bigger than anything seen before. The series is called the Icon Class. A second ship in the Icon Class, Star of the Seas , is due to debut in 2025.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

At 248,663 gross tons, Icon of the Seas is more than 6% larger than Royal Caribbean's 1-year-old Wonder of the Seas , which previously was the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (and the biggest ship operated by any line). Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers — a new record for a passenger ship. That's about 7% higher than the maximum capacity of Wonder of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,084 passengers.

The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas was built with a lot more cabins that have plenty of extra bunks to accommodate families with many children. It also has more amenities geared toward families. This includes a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is Grandeur of the Seas. Measuring just 73,817 tons, it's just a third the size of Icon of the Seas.

Grandeur of the Seas dates to 1996, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 28 years old, it's the oldest vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet and probably will be phased out sometime in the next few years.

Except for a rock climbing wall, Grandeur of the Seas has none of the gee-whiz Royal Caribbean top-deck attractions found on newer Royal Caribbean vessels, such as skydiving simulators and giant water parks. For the most part, its top deck is lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s.

That said, Grandeur of the Seas has a loyal following among Royal Caribbean fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Royal Caribbean has hinted of late that it might build a new series of smaller ships that could replace Grandeur of the Seas and other older small vessels in the line's fleet.

Are bigger Royal Caribbean ships coming?

Royal Caribbean currently has three new cruise ships on order, all of which will be among its biggest cruise ships ever — if not the biggest.

The ships on order include two more vessels in the line's Icon Class series that will be similar to Icon of the Seas. They're on order from a shipyard for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Both ships are expected to be as big or bigger than Icon of the Seas.

Related: The ultimate guide to Icon of the Seas itineraries, attractions and more

Royal Caribbean also has one more ship in its popular Oasis Class series on order for delivery in 2028.

Launched in 2009 with the debut of Oasis of the Seas, the Oasis-class ships have dominated the world of mega-size cruise ships since that year. At the time the class began rolling out, the vessels were around 40% bigger than the next-biggest cruise ships, and they have continued to be among the biggest and most amenity-laden ships in the world ever since.

The new Oasis Class vessel, which is as-yet unnamed, is expected to be roughly the same size as Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's second-biggest cruise ship. But it'll be smaller than the line's biggest ship, Icon of the Seas.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Royal Caribbean ships?

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than Royal Caribbean's older ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Royal Caribbean's biggest Oasis-class vessels, for instance, you'll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks. Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks.

The line's new Icon of the Seas has a similar array of amenities.

Related: The ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest Royal Caribbean ships can operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

You Can Get Married on a Cruise Ship — Here's How to Plan Your Nautical Wedding

Here's what you need to know about tying the knot at sea.

Planning the ceremony and reception, guest accommodations and activities, tips for planning a cruise wedding.

If you and your future spouse love to set sail and explore new locales, getting married at sea may be the perfect option for your wedding — and it comes with plenty of built-in benefits and amenities. What’s more, explains T+L A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel president Rob Clabbers, “The advantage of a wedding on a ship is that a lot of amenities and facilities are available — albeit it an extra charge in some cases: beautiful spaces, photographers, musicians, DJs, flowers, wedding assistants, bars and restaurants, the option to arrange a separate meal/buffet for your guests, a salon and spa to get ready for a ceremony, and, of course, a ‘built-in’ honeymoon.” Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate elopement or a larger celebration, we tapped several experts to provide insight on everything you need to know about cruise weddings, including the costs, the logistics, accommodations and amenities, and more.

What to Know

Once you’ve officially decided to say “I do” at sea, there are several factors to keep in mind. “At a minimum,” says Farah Barhorst, a director at Holland America Line , “couples should know where, when, and how they want to get married, in addition to the number of guests they would like in attendance.” She notes that many cruise lines put limits on how many visitors can board the ship who aren't sailing its full itinerary, so knowing how many guests plan to join you for your wedding only is crucial. Of course, couples should also consider their desired wedding location as, per the pro, “guest capacity is also limited based on the destination or port.”

As Clabbers explains, you also need to consider the laws of both the country where you'll be located when you get married and the country that runs your ship. “Many cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas, Bermuda, or Malta,” Clabbers notes, meaning “the laws of [that] specific country would apply to any ceremonies performed on board once the ship is in international waters.” There may then be limits on where same-sex ceremonies can take place. “Since the Bahamas and Bermuda, for example, don’t recognize same-sex marriage, same-sex couples can’t get legally married at sea on ships registered in those countries. They could potentially get married while in port in the U.S.A. or certain places in Europe,” he says.

For these and other reasons, Keith Willard , a wedding planner specializing in destination weddings, stresses the importance of planning ahead. "The first thing that many overlook is the marriage certificate itself," he says. "The easiest thing to do is to get a marriage license within 60 days of your wedding and bring it with you.” Stacey Johnston , a travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, echoes these sentiments, explaining that “you will need to arrange for the marriage license ahead of your cruise from the port or the departure location depending on where you are getting married.”

To avoid mishaps with locations and licenses, some couples choose to have a wedding celebration on a cruise but get legally married elsewhere. On a Holland America Line ship, for instance, “The captain can perform a ‘symbolic’ ceremony that is not legally binding,” says Barhorst. If you want the wedding-at-sea experience with fewer logistical headaches, a compromise like this may be for you.

Nadtochiy/Getty Images

According to Clabbers, “Many cruise lines that offer weddings will provide a range of packages to choose from, with ceremonies from two to over 100 attendees that may include the services from the officiant, a celebration venue, recorded or live music, a cake, Champagne or other beverages for guests, a dinner for the wedding couple, and other extras.” To provide to-be-weds with a better idea of what to expect, we’ve compiled a few packages from several cruise lines.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line currently offers a handful of wedding packages , including the Symbolic at Sea Package, which, per Barhorst, includes a non-legal ceremony performed by the captain or an officer; coordination by both onboard and pre-cruise wedding coordinators; recorded ceremony music; a keepsake wedding certificate; basic photography service, including one 8” x 10” photo of choice and a commemorative wedding album; sparkling wine; a nine-inch wedding cake; and a bridal bouquet with a dozen roses and a matching groom’s boutonniere. The Anchors Away Package includes all of the above but with a legal ceremony (led by a non-denominational officiant), as well as priority check-in for the couple during embarkation. Lastly, couples craving a true destination wedding can book the Ashore Package, which “lets couples officially tie the knot on a beach, garden, or glacier location,” says Barhorst. “A seasonal bridal bouquet and boutonniere will be provided in addition to a pre-cruise and ashore wedding coordinator to ensure all runs smoothly.”

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises offers three distinct packages to choose from via its Princess Perfect Weddings department. The Perfect Pair Package includes the couple and up to two guests, while the ceremony-only package, aptly named Timeless Ceremony at Sea, includes the couple and up to eight guests. Lastly, the Timeless Wedding at Sea package is the line's most elaborate. It comes with a ceremony and a reception for the couple and up to 18 guests, plus extras like salon services and specialty dining reservations for the bride and groom. All three Princess packages include fresh florals, photography, and an indoor or outdoor ceremony officiated by the ship’s captain.

Margaritaville at Sea

Margaritaville at Sea launched in April 2022 and offers warm-weather sailings from Palm Beach and Tampa. It has three aptly named wedding packages : Paradise, Elation, and Bliss. Paradise is the most extravagant, offering live music, full photography services, and an upgraded venue complete with panoramic views. Elation is the mid-range option, with a reception dinner, DJ services, and ceremony photography, and Bliss serves as the line’s basic package for intimate soirees. At all three levels, couples enjoy perks like a personal wedding coordinator, an officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere, priority check-in, dinner at the onboard steakhouse, and a wedding cake.

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship ocean line has four wedding packages , including the Vows at Sea Package, which allows couples to choose from an array of onboard venues and includes dinner for two at a specialty restaurant, a bottle of bubbly, special stateroom decor, and more. With the Embark on Romance Package, you can invite sailing and non-sailing guests to watch you tie the knot with a ceremony on embarkation day, which includes many of the aforementioned amenities plus priority check-in for the couple. The smallest at-sea package, Intimately Yours, includes a ceremony for the couple and up to 10 guests, while the Destinations I Do package is ideal for those who want a great on-land backdrop for their wedding. With Destinations I Do, couples get married either on board or on land while the ship is in port; transportation to and from the venue is included if you choose the on-land option.

Carnival Cruise Line

Another mega-ship ocean line, Carnival offers three wedding packages . The Signature Ceremony is the line's smallest but still offers plenty of perks: a ceremony for up to 10 guests (including the couple), pre-recorded ceremony music, a pre-cruise wedding planner, priority embarkation assistance, a local officiant, a keepsake wedding certificate, a cake, a sparkling wine toast, photography (plus a canvas print), shipboard decor, and a honeymoon dinner for the newlyweds. Service charges, which include gratuities, are also covered. Those looking to host an onboard reception following the ceremony can book the It’s a Celebration! package for a minimum of 20 guests, including the couple. Alternatively, say “I do” off the ship by booking the Love Ashore package, where couples can tie the knot in a dreamy beach or garden ceremony. For extra amenities, add on the Diamond Enhancement Package, which comes with perks like a mimosa-fueled breakfast, chocolate-covered strawberries delivered to the couple’s stateroom, a bottle of bubbly, a 30-minute couples massage, and more.

Disney Cruise Line

For a fairy-tale-worthy wedding at sea, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. Their standard cruise ceremony package includes up to 16 guests (excluding the couple), while food and drink services, florals, and entertainment can all be added on for an extra cost. Couples can also choose to get married off the ship at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. For more information, including specific venue options, visit the Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons website .

As noted above, many cruise lines offer wedding coordinators to ensure everything runs smoothly so that you and your soon-to-be spouse can sit back, relax, and soak up the blissful, celebratory vibes. In terms of what to expect from the ceremony and what kind of venues are available, “There can be quite a variety,” says Clabbers. For example, “Some ships have a chapel or space dedicated to weddings and ceremonies; others use a lounge, restaurant, or private room.” Again, since this will all vary by the cruise line and/or the specific package you pick, your best bet is to do your research by combing through the wedding package offerings online or calling the company directly.

The same thing goes for receptions, explains Allison DePesa , a travel advisor with Marvelous Mouse Travels. For example, “You could opt for a dinner in a specialty restaurant or something more opulent in a main dining room, which would offer more space for guests and a DJ.” Willard also urges to-be-weds to remember that the time of their onboard reception will likely be “based on what the cruise line has available, which means the times may be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., or even 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.” He explains, “A traditional five-hour event with an hour ceremony on the cruise between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight is almost never done for groups larger than 20 people.”

ParfonovaIuliia/Getty Images

Good news: Couples getting married on a cruise are privy to discounts and other perks. According to DePesa, “With as few as eight cabins, you qualify as a group with most cruise lines. You'll receive discounted rates, onboard credits, cocktail parties, etc., depending on the number of staterooms booked.” Barhorst notes that similar perks apply on Holland America, explaining that, if a couple books a group of eight staterooms for their wedding crew, they're “eligible to receive a stateroom category upgrade up to Suite level, completely complimentary.”

According to Johnston, when setting up your room block, it’s a good idea to offer several category options — she recommends reserving balcony, oceanview, and interior staterooms — “since your wedding guests may have a variety of budgetary ranges.” Also, says Willard, “Unlike a hotel room block, your cruise rate can fluctuate for your guests, so it is important to book early” since “the earlier you book, typically the better the price point.” Be sure to keep an eye on cut-off dates, though. Some cruise lines will deactivate contracted room-block rates and links a set time before the sailing (90 days, for instance), meaning guests booking after that point would be on their own to find a stateroom.

When it comes to onboard activities and programming, Willard says that “there are opportunities at every turn for shared group experiences.” For example, “Dining in the main dining hall can be for groups [of] up to 20 people per table," while groups of 30 or more may even be able to book whole private sections of the dining room. On the flip side, cruising is also great because everyone in the group — or, in this case, the wedding party — can do their own thing without being tied to a specific schedule. So, while some guests might prefer to lounge by the pool or relax in the spa, others may take advantage of other onboard amenities, like an escape room, laser tag, waterslides, and more, depending on the specific line and ship.

While standard wedding packages will vary depending on the cruise line and number of guests, Clabbers says they can “range from anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 and up,” and most of the advisors we spoke to concurred.

That said, budget-conscious couples can find a few under-$2,000 options, including the aforementioned Signature Ceremony package on Carnival and the Symbolic at Sea package on Holland America Line, both of which clock in at $1,800. Also — at least on Holland America Line — “seasonal price surcharges of $100 to $200 should also be taken into account during peak nuptial times and holidays, including Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, and the beginning of summer,” says Barhorst. Similarly, while some purposely intimate packages include only a small number of guests, extra guests can sometimes be added at a per-person price. Be sure to inquire about fees, too, particularly for on-shore events.

When budgeting for your cruise wedding, remember that “the cost of legal documentations and permits is extra and needs to be planned far in advance — at least 90 days but ideally more,” explains Clabbers. Sue Allen, a travel consultant at Destination Weddings Travel Group & Celebration Travel , expressed similar sentiments and noted that “legal weddings have an additional fee” compared to symbolic (or non-legal) ones.

Per the pro, “Marriage license fees for in-destination weddings can range from $200 to $700,” while a shipboard maritime license fee is around $900. Allen also cautions couples to be wary of non-refundable deposits. While the initial cruise price may be lower, “if something comes up and you are not able to travel, you lose your deposit or pay a fee to change your travel dates.” With that being said, it’s always a good idea to purchase cruise insurance .

Lastly, DePesa urges couples to keep in mind that “the wedding does not include the fare for the actual cruise.” In fact, the cruise fare(s) can vary drastically depending on the time of year, length of itinerary, and line. If you’re not sailing on a truly all-inclusive line, you and your guests can expect to pay extra for features such as Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and alcoholic beverages. You’ll also, of course, need to factor in airfare if you’re flying to the embarkation/disembarkation port(s).

Book early and plan ahead.

To secure the best prices for your stateroom block, Johnston recommends planning as early as possible. Willard agrees, telling T+L that cost-conscious couples should create their block at least a year out at minimum. Plus, he says, "Most of the cruise lines will provide incentives, as well.”

Also, as part of the planning process, DePesa advises couples to “get an idea of your guest list, get a sense of who can travel with you, what budgets are like, and what time of year that works best” to ensure you’re selecting a sailing that suits both your and your loved ones’ needs, preferences, and desires.

Keep an open mind and trust your coordinator.

“When planning a wedding at sea, a good practice would be to keep an open mind,” explains Barhorst. This, of course, goes hand-in-hand with putting your trust in the cruise wedding planner. That way, she says, “the less stressful (and easier) it will be for [the couple] to enjoy their time together during the sailing.”

Familiarize yourself with the legalities.

As previously mentioned, the legalities and specifics of a cruise wedding vary greatly depending on where the ship is registered, the port(s) of call, and more. With that in mind, DePesa recommends couples take the time to do some digging and understand the legal requirements to determine “if a symbolic ceremony might just make things easier.”

Decide if a cruise wedding is really for you.

Before going full speed ahead and booking a cruise wedding, it’s crucial to weigh the pros and cons to determine if these types of nuptials are truly what you want. What’s more, says Willard, “A cruise wedding isn't about you specifically outside of the ceremony itself.” Rather, “It's about the shared experience, and your guests may decide that there is something more interesting [to do] on one of the other days.” He also cautions that cruise weddings can mean fewer guests RSVPing yes due to factors like time commitment, budget restraints, and so on.

If you do decide to move forward with a cruise wedding, Barhorst says that “managing the wedding parties’ expectations is also advised, as the structure of cruise weddings differs from the traditional ceremony,”
