Castle of the Sept Tours

Monument in courcelles-de-touraine.

The Château du Vivier des Landes, now called "Château golf des Sept Tours" is located in the town of Courcelles-de-Touraine , in Indre-et-Loire , 34 km north-west of Tours.

The building was first a manor with three towers built in the 16th century, to the east of the village. It was then a stronghold under Château-la-Vallière .

In 1815, acquired by an English nobleman, the manor was given two additional towers on the south side, and a large living room was added. Stables and a building dedicated to brewing beer were also built during this period.

Two additional towers were erected in 1834 by the Comte de Brissac, who also had the chapel restored.

In general, as fashion wanted in the 19th century, the building has been remodeled in a neo-Gothic style that blends with the medieval bases (moats now dry, interior stone staircase, remains of a drawbridge, monumental fireplaces, vaulted rooms in the basement).

From the 19th century, false battlements and machicolations are visible on the large southern tower, the music room in the old brewery, pepper shakers at the level of the towers, sculpted columns at the ceiling of the stable, the doors and the altarpiece (now transferred to the restaurant) of the chapel…

The castle has become the center of a 76-hectare estate where an 18-hole golf course has been designed. The house has been converted into a hotel with a restaurant.

Paintings and wallpaper from the 19th century have been preserved, as well as the Louis XV or Directoire furniture. The chapel has turned into a clubhouse.

A Discovery of Witches: A location guide

After a highly acclaimed first Season on Sky One, A Discovery of Witches returned to our screens for Season Two and Three. Filming took place in Wales. Here are some of the locations.

If you're not familiar with the series, it's based upon the best-selling novels by Deborah Harkness which portray a mysterious world that humans share with the declining species of witches, vampires and daemons. Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont are caught up in a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript. Their journey takes them through time and to locations across the world - but many were actually right here in Wales.

A Discovery of Witches TV trailer

Gareth Skelding, Location Manager for A Discovery of Witches , talks us through some of the places they filmed, as this supernatural thriller of a romance unfolded.

Wolf Studios Wales, Cardiff Bay

'The vast 250,000 sq ft Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff Bay played host to a number of large sets that the production required, including a huge replica of Oxford University’s acclaimed Bodleian Library in which the action really kicks off. I was told that over 5km of books were needed to line the shelves! No small undertaking but the results are breathtaking. We also created the interior of Bishop House, Emily and Sarah’s home here, along with the interior of Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours.'

Aberglasney Gardens, Carmarthenshire

'The medieval Aberglasney House and Gardens in Carmarthenshire boasts one of the finest gardens in Wales, part of which served as the gardens for Sept-Tours, the fictional family home of the de Clermont family. It’s a really versatile location for a set which I have also used to shoot scenes for Da Vinci’s Demons. Sept-Tours features in Seasons 2 and 3 as well as Season 1 and it was great to come back. Gardens, little temples and cloisters from Aberglasney all make an appearance. It’s a sweet little place, the people are amazing.'

Cast and crew filming in Aberglasney woodland, Carmarthenshire, West Wales

Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire

' Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire doubled as the ruins of La Pierre, the home of vampire Gerbert of Aurillac, where Diana is kidnapped and tortured by the powerful witch Satu in Season 1 . The castle is situated so beautifully on an incredible estuary, and is also home to a large colony of bats which we had to be very careful to work around and not disturb. An ancient castle full of bats seemed very appropriate for a show about witches and vampires!'

Diana from A Discovery of Witches at Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

Llyn y Fan Fach , Carmarthenshire

'When we were looking for a location to shoot the scenes where Matthew Clairmont and daemon Hamish Osborne go hunting in Season 1, we needed to find a stunning natural environment that would double as the Scottish Highlands (the location written in the book). We found just the place in the mythical lake Llyn y Fan Fach in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park .'

Cardiff Market, Cardiff

'We needed to find a location to double as the Oxford food market where Diana shops for fresh food in Season 1. We found the ideal location in Cardiff Market , where we created a butchers counter from an empty stall. We shot in the early hours of the morning to avoid the public but as the shoot went on there were definitely a few people that wandered into shot that weren’t one of our extras. Working in busy locations where you can’t fully shut down the set is always interesting and definitely keeps us on our toes!'

Insole Court, Llandaff , Cardiff

'I love Insole Court and have been shooting productions there for over twenty years. It’s a very grand mansion that we used to shoot scenes for Matthew Clairmont’s lodgings at All Souls College within Oxford University for both Seasons 1 and 2. It was the ideal backdrop for a vampire’s lair – dark and brooding. Fans of the books or the show can visit Insole Court, which has recently been saved by years of community campaigning and the ground floor is now open for visitors.'

Tretower Court, Crickhowell, Powys

' Tretower is a fortified manor house that's just steeped in history. It made the perfect setting for the house of the Council of Witches in Elizabethan London where the powerful witch Goody Alsop trains Diana in the in the ways of magic in Season 2. All the scenes where Diana learns to weave spells are filmed in the Upper North Range, and the scenes with Diana and Goody sat in front of a fire were filmed in the kitchen at Tretower. The best thing is you can see it all for yourself. The rooms have been restored to look as they did in the building's 1460s heyday - complete with tapestries, tables, pots and pans.'

The restored splendour of Tretower Court in Crickhowell, South Wales, provided a backdrop for scenes set in Elizabethan London

Oxwich and Rhossili Bays, the Gower Peninsula

'In Season 2, Gallowglass, Matthew and Diana make a long journey to Sept-Tours in France to visit Philippe de Clermont, Matthew's father. They pitch up on this windswept and gorgeously wild beach from their little boat, wet and bedraggled. We shot these scenes over several days down on the Gower Peninsula . Wales has heaps of spectacular coastline, but this stretch is probably my favourite at any time of year.'

Caerphilly Castle, Caerphilly

'There are over 400 castles in Wales and that's one reason so many films get made here - there's a spooky ruin round almost every corner! But Caerphilly Castle with its huge wonky tower and mighty moat is one of the biggest and best. Not only did we use the interior of one of the gatehouses for Matthew's cell scenes, but the moat doubled for the Thames for the Tower of London dungeon shots in Season 2. We spent a lot of time messing about on boats here!'

16th Century Manor House, Newport

'I'm not going to give you the exact name, because it's a private house, but much of Season 2 is set in Elizabethan London. We built narrow cobbled streets and wooden-beamed houses round the courtyard of this farm and manor house out in the countryside. Some of the houses had complete interiors and multiple floors. Teresa Palmer who plays Diana was literally reduced to tears when she first saw it! It really looked amazing.'

A Discovery of Witches: Where Was the TV Show Filmed?

of A Discovery of Witches: Where Was the TV Show Filmed?

‘A Discovery of Witches’ is one of those unique fantasy dramas that compel the viewers into a deep state of contemplation. The plot revolves around a book that unravels shocking secrets about magic. Quite unexpectedly, it falls into the hands of a historian Dr. Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), who wants to solve these mysteries and also protect this mystical manuscript. Based on a series of books by Deborah Harkness, it is about a book wedged between unseen crevices of Oxford’s Bodleian Library.

The show is dark and mysterious, especially the library’s haunting interiors, where the book is chanced upon. The remaining scenes take us to a dimension where vampires and witches coexist with the rest of humanity. Because of that, there is also a clash between murder and magic. This intriguing arrangement made us curious about the series, especially its filming location. So, where is ‘A Discovery of Witches’ filmed? Let’s find out.

A Discovery of Witches Filming Locations

The production of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ invested magnanimously in filming locations. Shooting for Season 1 took place in the UK and ended on February 16, 2018, after around six months. Season 2 was filmed in mid-2019 as the team found their way to Italy apart from the UK. The production clearly worked hard to conjure a setup that reflects a sweltering darkness characteristic to the plot. Let’s discover more about the locations!

Oxford, England

The dark allure of the Bodleian Library is mostly a product of studio work, but fortunately, a couple of scenes were actually filmed in The City of Dreaming Spires. The production included New College, Brown’s Cafe, parts of the Bodleian Library (the real one), and The White Horse pub in the series’ making. The limited time and resources allotted to the production deemed it impossible to film all the scenes within the University premises. Hence, they spent eight weeks creating a mock-up of the library, which nevertheless looked fascinating.

Bristol, England

In the first episode, several scenes were shot in Bristol, including The Rummer bar-restaurant at All Saints Lane. Season 1 also features the Bristol Harbour Hotel at Corn Street and the Highbury Vaults pub on St Michael’s Hill. A few scenes were filmed in Deanery Road, not far from Bristol Cathedral. The production returned to Bristol in July 2019 at Berkeley Square to film season 2.

Venice, Italy

The de Clermont family lives in the Sept-Tours, which in reality is the Castello Cini Monselice in Venice (both the interiors and exteriors). The Congregation island is actually San Giorgio Maggiore island, one of Venice’s islands. The production team conducted most of the exterior shots in its backstreets and alleys. Gerbert’s (Trevor Eve) Palace is located in Palazzo Contarini Polignac, except for the staircase, which is actually situated in Palazzo Pisani Moretta.

Located in the Veneto region in northeastern Italy, the village of Arqua Petrarca stands in for the fictional village of St Lucien based in France. The second season presents a (scary yet refreshing) hoard of witches, demons, and other beings that dominate Venice’s aesthetic.

Cardiff, Wales

The interiors of various locations in the series were materialized in the Wolf Studios located in Cardiff, most significantly, the Bodleian Library with a row of books stacked over every nook and corner. The Oxford food market was additionally recreated in Cardiff Market, which was predominantly used during odd hours when the buzz of people was significantly less. The Insole Court in Llandaff was also used as Matthew Clairmont’s (Matthew Goode) abode, not very different from the stereotypical example of a vampire’s lair.

As for the period interiors–the Hart and Crown, Rudolf II's palace, and Sept-Tours–they were built in the studio. I will be showing you interior details in next week's #Book2ScreenMagicMonday . Check out the full story on my @Facebook author page. pic.twitter.com/h8SBuSOkY0 — Dr Deborah Harkness (PhD, LHD) (@DebHarkness) December 14, 2020

Carmarthenshire, Wales

Another place that was taken because of its wilderness and space versatility is the Brecon Beacons National Park near Llyn y Fan Fach, situated in Carmarthenshire. It comprises a hunting scene with Matthew Clairmont and Hamish Osborne (Greg McHugh), a very appealing environment that could easily substitute the Scottish Highlands. Another location is Aberglasney Gardens, which posed as the garden outside Sept-Tours: the fictional castle of the de Clermont family. St Donat’s Castle is also additionally featured.

Pembrokeshire, Wales

The Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire assisted in creating Gerbert’s home, the ruins of La Pierre. The castle is overwhelmingly on an estuary, and an army of bats apparently joined the production!

Rabbie's Tours

"Our tour was more than I expected. Our guide, Amir, was excellent - knowledgeable, capable and personable. I like Rabbie's style: drop you off at a place and let you explore on your own. My only suggestion is to provide more of an itinerary. For example I knew we would be in the south of England, but I did not know we would be visiting Winchester and Runnymede on the return to London. I was thrilled - I have been wanting to visit both for years. I very much recommend the trip.

"good, some meals were poor, excursions too expensive for what they were, rooms not aired out and were hot and stuffy when arrived, some of the hotels kept turning off the air conditioning even when the rooms were too hot to sleep, ie were 24 degrees at night, all hotels should know the ideal temperatures to sallow sleep, When we complained they tried to fob you off by saying the air con was not working, when the truth wa they controlled it by a timer and were turning it off

The month of September is perfect for Japan travel as summer temperatures begin to cool and the autumn season begins for the northern regions of Japan. In late September, the average weather is ideal for a nice walking journey to visit Japan’s more out-of-the-way treasures. And as cities become calmer after the summer festival season, many travelers also find it the right time to tour the country’s top destinations in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and more. September has some of the best weather on average for hiking Japan’s breathtaking trekking and pilgrimage trails. Travel during Japan’s feudal Edo period involved walking great distances, and perhaps the most traveled was the Nakasendo Road, which connected Kyoto with Tokyo via a number of charming “post towns” that maintain an old-fashioned ambience, complete with overnight stays at hot spring ryokan inns and family-owned minshuku guest houses. Fall comes earlier to the northern regions of Japan, and September is when the leaves of Hokkaido and Tohoku start to put on autumn colors. Travelers are presented with an opportunity for viewing the unmissable attractions of the northern regions at the start of one of Japan’s prettiest seasons. Explore the Kushiro Marshlands, a nationally treasured habitat for the famed red-crowned crane and other wildlife, hike the nature trails of the Shiretoko Peninsula around beauteous lakes and waterfalls, stay overnight in a Buddhist Temple while climbing the Dewa Sanzan sacred mountains, admire the fine detail in the Rice Paddy Art at Inakadate, and view opulent Toshogu Shrine at Nikko. September offers some excellent opportunity for exploring Japan’s most popular destinations throughout the country. Explore Tokyo’s incredible cultural wonders, the time-honored treasures of Kyoto, Osaka’s mouthwatering street food scene, or embark to somewhere more off-the-beaten-track. This month is a good time for nature-loving travelers to trek the mountainous regions near Kojima, Tsuwano, and Hagi, or take a walk down the old Nakasendo Road to experience Japanese life in the feudal Edo period. Whether you are looking for Japan’s scenic beauties or must-see cultural sights, September is an excellent time to plan a tour of Japan.

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 536 REVIEWS

Trip of a lifetime. Our tour guide was amazing and really ensured everyone learned , was engaged and accommodated a variety of requests. This tour created a lifetime of memories for me and my son as well as a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, cuisine and heritage. Highly recommend to anyone looking to travel to Japan. Everything was taken care of, all we had to do was come enjoy , walk and learn! the hotel choices were great, food provided was plentiful and the group was the right size for strangers to now be friends. The bus and accommodations were comfy and the driver a true professional. Thank you Billy for all you did for our group. We had a blast.

There were a few too many shrines and temples. The best part was learning about the culture and local customs. Our tour guide, Kim, was excellent and gave us insights into how the locals live as well as how society runs--things that tour brochures do not cover. If we were to return to Japan we would want to have Kim as a guide again as she was so pleasant, engaging and competent. The tour overall gets a rating of 4 but she gets a 5+.

Well worth the price. If i hadn't booked this tour, i wouldn't have been able to see half the attractions and probably would have had to pay more. Kim-san made sure we were able to see everything on the itinerary, even with crazy weather making us switch things around. Nakano-san was a very capable driver and helped everyone get on the right bus. I really couldn't even imagine trying to book everything on my own and all of the hotels were top notch (right at the center of everything). Very pleasant experience.

This tour is exactly what we wanted for our first time in Japan. It's really just a taste of Japanese culture leaving you wanting to come back for more. We loved the tea ceremony, sushi making, Shinkansen (even if it was only for 1 stop), and the onsen hotel.

Kim, our tour guide, was wonderful. The weather wasn't cooperative on some days but Kim made the best of it. I had hoped to see Mt Fuji but, like the Northern Lights, it requires some luck. I was also surprised how good the food was at the service areas. I would definitely recommend this trip to my friends. I will also consider other AJT trips.

Travel tips for England trips

  • To enter England, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • There’s no visa requirement for U.S. or Canadian citizens.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to  goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements
  • England operates on 230–240 volts and uses a Type G plug with three large, flat pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal plug adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or any device without one built in.

England’s currency is the pound sterling. If you choose to continue your travels to the Republic of Ireland, you will be using the euro.

As a relatively small country, you can see a lot of England in just a few days. We recommend you spend at least 5 to 7 days on your trip to England so you can have time to explore its many historical sites, charming villages, and natural beauty.

Some of the unique experiences you can have on your tours to England include:

  • Spend a night at the elegant Ashridge House.  If you’re seeking the royal treatment, you won’t find yourself at a loss for places to visit in England, but this historic home of King Henry VIII and Princess Elizabeth I ranks among our favorites. When you join us on our new  Highlights of Southern England: London, Bath & Oxford tour , you’ll spend a day exploring the regal Ashridge House and its sprawling, immaculate gardens.
  • Visit a free museum.  London is known for having some of the  best free museums  in the world. Use a free afternoon to explore the antiquities in the British Museum or peruse the artwork at the Tate Modern. London has more than 190 museums to choose from, and while many of them are free, some may feature special exhibitions that charge admission.
  • Take a scenic drive through the Cotswolds.  The English countryside features painterly scenes that are loved by artists and frequently immortalized on canvas and film.
  • Glide through London’s skyline. The London Eye rises 450 feet above the River Thames—the world’s fourth-tallest observation wheel. Settle into an enclosed gondola for a 30-minute ride and view the city below. (In clear weather, the panorama stretches for 25 miles.)

Despite being farther north than much of North America, England has a temperate climate—which means tours of England are enjoyable most any time of year. But when is the best time to visit England? Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds at the most popular sites, making the off-season a perfect time to visit England. Winter, too, offers plenty of charm—despite the cold temps—with Christmas markets happening in London and around the country.

No matter what time of year you plan your trip to England, expect some rain—but don’t let it keep you from enjoying this beautiful destination! Just have your Wellies with you (that’s British for “rainboots”).

There are plenty of places to see in England, and because the country is relatively small it’s easy to do in one trip. On our escorted tours of England, you can choose to live like a local for a week on a London City Stay or see it all on a Grand Tour of Great Britain —or something in-between.

Here are just a few of the destinations you can explore on our tours of England:

  • Westminster Abbey in London
  • Liverpool, the home of the Beatles
  • The historic city of York
  • Bath, a UNESCO-listed city

But this is just the start! Our tours go to many of the best places to visit in England. One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you choose the escorted tour of England that’s perfect for you.

Traditional British cuisine has ancient roots—meat and game pies, vegetable stews, and hearty breads were on tables all the way back to the Middle Ages! Influences from former British colonies can also be found in local dishes; authentic Indian, African, and Asian food is especially popular in cities like London. But, no matter where you visit in England, you’ll find a local pub where you can stop for a pint and enjoy an iconic English dish like fish and chips.

On all of our England tour packages, you’ll enjoy meals that are authentic to the region and have free time to try new dishes on your own, too! Ask your Tour Director for recommendations—they’re experts who can guide you to the best of England’s culinary scene.

When packing for any of our tours of England, remember to be prepared for many different types of weather! At any time of year, expect occasional rain showers. Boots, an umbrella, and a rain jacket are good to have handy in every season. Layers are also always a good idea, as evenings in England tend to be cooler—even in summer—and the Brits tend to open a window rather than turn on the A/C, too.

Once you’ve reserved one of our England vacation packages, you’ll receive a detailed packing list for your specific trip. Plus, you can download the Go Ahead Tour Companion app so you’ll have everything you need to prepare right in your pocket.

Suki Waterhouse on Her New Album, Touring With a Baby, and Ditching Maternity Style

The English singer’s second studio album, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin , will be released this September

Every product on this page was chosen by a Harper's BAZAAR editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

“I’m actually really looking forward to it,” she tells me when we talk on the phone. “I think it’ll be so fun just to … have an amazing kind of bonding experience. Just to go around America with her on the bus, I can’t wait.” Of course, with a four-month-old in her life, our conversation often turns to her life as a new mom. “I’m having such an amazing time,” Waterhouse says. “I’m really, really enjoying it.”

While she’s likely missing out on more sleep than usual these days, Waterhouse is used to a busy schedule. “So much has happened in these last two years. It’s kind of like I can’t even really comprehend it,” she says. Before welcoming her daughter, whose name has not been made public yet, the singer spent the latter half of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 doing various live gigs, all the while recording Sparklemuffin .

Ahead of the LP’s release, Waterhouse has given fans a taste with tracks like “My Fun” —which revels in the merriment of her relationship with Pattinson—and lead single “Supersad,” a deceptively titled, smooth rock song that celebrates Waterhouse’s resilience, even in the face of depression. “My last album was very much exploring this kind of sadistic relationship that I was spending a lot of time getting over,” she notes. “And I think this one is like my head is above water … I’m kind of in this new season of life, which feels really exhilarating.”

When I ask which Sparklemuffin tracks she’s most excited for fans to hear, she names “Blackout Drunk,” a song she describes as a “buzzy maritime” tune about waking up and telling a man all the messy things he did the night before. “It kind of became this thing, I guess, about, like, gender and drinking,” she tells me. She humorously adds, “[Men] don’t go to therapy and they don’t know how to control their drinking. It’s a very annoying combination.”

Other personal highlights for Waterhouse are “To Get You,” which she co-wrote with Greg Gonzalez of Cigarettes After Sex, and “Lawsuit,” which she says stemmed from the story of an unnamed figure who got what was coming to them. “It wasn’t my lawsuit, but it was someone that I dislike very much,” she reveals. “[Someone] getting held accountable for something.”

I can’t help but wonder if any of the Sparklemuffin tracks were written for her daughter, but when I reference “Lullaby,” Waterhouse laughs. “‘Lullaby’ is absolutely not like a sweet song about potential moms,” she says. “I don’t think I was pregnant when I wrote that song.”

She does reveal that she did write a bunch of songs for her child—but that at least for now, they will remain private.“I had this sense that she was gonna have blue eyes, and I wrote this song called ‘Blue Eyes,’ ” she recalls. “And then I actually didn’t end up [including it on the album]. I ended up keeping them for myself, and I didn’t end up putting any of them on the record. So, yeah, there’s no hint of baby on this record.”

As a project, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin is more about Waterhouse’s personal journey, and you can see that reflected in the eye-catching title. Waterhouse explains that she learned about the sparklemuffin spider and was immediately intrigued. For context, sparklemuffins are a colorful species of peacock spiders whose male members perform a dance to try to impress their mates. If a female spider is not successfully wooed, she ends up eating her suitor.

“[The title]—it’s kind of one of those things where I’m like, if you get it, you get it,” she says. “I wanted something that leaned towards a kind of ridiculousness and felt a little bit comical and a bit fabulous. … The world is kind of violent and you can get eviscerated and you can get eaten at any moment, and we’re in this, like, kind of beautiful and also, like, devastating dance together.”

Although it goes unsaid, I get the sense that being a musician can also often feel like you’re being eaten or performing a dance to impress the world, and Waterhouse seems to hint at this as well. “Fear never goes away,” she admits.

She even refers to herself as “untrustworthy” and says she experienced a roller coaster of emotions with many of the songs that did end up on the album.“Some of the songs that I really disliked, I suddenly would rediscover when I was putting together the album by the end,” she says. “And [then] I’d be like, ‘Why was I in such a terrible mindset about this song? I love this song now!’ ”

At this point, the Daisy Jones & The Six star has no regrets about the final product. “I’m really looking forward to it,” she tells me. Of course, a new album era means an opportunity to explore new fashion styles, which Waterhouse is really embracing now that she’s no longer pregnant. “I feel like my wardrobe is having such a renaissance,” she excitedly says. “I’ve been shopping all the time.”

She names Paloma Wool , Leset , and Patrizia Pepe as brands that have become favorites, and she says she’s also been really into thrifting, recently obtaining a spiky pink bag from a ’92 Dolce & Gabbana collection. “Now that the album’s coming out, I want loud accessories,” Waterhouse proclaims. “Things with sparkles, things with bright colors. That was part of naming the album. I want to be able to point to a cute thing and be like, ‘I must have it, it’s sparklemuffin.’ ”
