Is Royal Caribbean’s “priority access” package worth the price? TPG experts weigh in.

Sierra Redmond

In 2018, Royal Caribbean rolled out "The Key." It was a new "guest priority" package available to all cruisers who were willing to pay for it. The intent was to give travelers VIP or suite-style benefits while on board. It's available for a small additional cost without the need of booking the type of suite that offers similar perks.

The only other way to get some of these amenities is to earn a high status tier in Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program . With The Key, you don't need to splurge on a suite or have Royal Caribbean status in order to get these perks. It's strictly a pay-to-play situation.

During our cruise with Royal Caribbean this past December, we decided to purchase The Key package to determine if it's really worth the price. Here's our take on this extra-fee package.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter.

What is The Key program?

The Key program is Royal Caribbean's initiative to give guests access to premier and exclusive cruise services and activities while on board for a small additional fee. Basically, it's your chance to get to the fun faster and receive VIP access to certain activities.

If you're anything like us, we have a small family and always intend to spend 95% of our time out of our room. Booking a suite on any cruise doesn't make sense for us. However, the suite amenities -- such as priority embarkation/debarkation, departure breakfast and reserved theater seating -- are pretty sweet (pun intended). Buying The Key package instead of booking a suite is an awesome way to receive some VIP benefits at a more affordable price.

What does it include?

royal caribbean cruise premier pass price

The Key benefits are:

  • Priority check-in and boarding on embarkation day*
  • Carry-on bag drop off in the Main Dining Room with stateroom delivery**
  • Exclusive welcome lunch in the Main Dining Room with a menu featuring Chops Grille on embarkation day
  • Private hours for guests to partake in certain on board activities, such as the FlowRider and rock climbing, without a wait
  • Priority departure at ports of call from ship-to-shore
  • Seats in the exclusive VIP seating section at shows in the main theater, Aqua Theater, Studio B and Two70
  • VOOM Surf & Stream for one device with high-speed internet (one package per paying guest)
  • Exclusive a la carte breakfast on disembarkation day
  • Pick your departure time on disembarkation day

*with the exception of Vancouver, Canada and any Australian ports **limited to two pieces of luggage per guest; each bag must weigh less than 25 pounds

How much does it cost?

So, now that you've got all the facts, you're probably wondering how much these benefits cost. The per-person cost varies based on your ship and the time that you choose to purchase the package. At the time of our purchase, The Key package cost $19.99 per guest per day (that included a discount; it typically starts around $24.99) and children under age 6 do not need to purchase a Key package to partake in the benefits. Note that The Key is not offered on all Royal Caribbean ships.

For our four-day itinerary out of Miami on Navigator of the Seas and a family of three, the total cost for our package (two adults) was around $159.

Tip: When you receive your SeaPass card on board, there will be a small sticker on the card to verify your status. Just present your SeaPass card as usual to have access to these amenities.

How can I buy the package?

You must purchase The Key package online in advance of your sailing. Once you've booked a cruise, go to Royal Caribbean's site, log in to your account and click on "Cruise Planner." The Key is not sold on board the ship.

Is it worth it?

In my opinion, this is not a one-size-fits-all package. Whether The Key package is worth it depends on the type of traveler you are.

The Key program is worth it if...

  • You plan to purchase the onboard VOOM Wi-Fi. Onboard Wi-Fi can be quite expensive. Royal Caribbean's Voom Wi-Fi starts at $13.99 per day, per device. If you were already planning to get Wi-Fi to stay connected back home, stream or use social media and you snagged The Key package for $19.99, then you receive all the additional Key program benefits for just $6 extra per day.
  • You enjoy a structured and planned cruise vacation. The Key program does allow you to skip the line by accessing attractions at a certain time per day for Key members only. However, those days and times are not flexible. If you want to take advantage of the activities, you have to be available at the specified date and time.
  • You are returning to a port that you have already explored. Unfortunately, some of The Key activities on the ship take place while the ship is in various ports of call. For example: If you have traveled to Nassau, Bahamas, before and are willing to stay on board during that port of call, this could be the perfect time to take advantage of some onboard opportunities -- like testing out the FlowRider or going rock climbing with basically no wait.

The Key program package is not worth it if...

royal caribbean cruise premier pass price

  • You are staying in a suite. Royal Caribbean's suite accommodations include a variety of VIP perks, some of which overlap with The Key. If you're in a suite, you don't need to pay extra for this package too.
  • You don't plan to take advantage of its offerings. During our trip, we did not take advantage of some of the benefits we paid for. Due to time constraints, we missed our special boarding day lunch. For us, that was one of the most important perks because boarding day is always busy for the buffet, which is where most other passengers end up for the midday meal. If you don't take advantage of at least three Key benefits, this package may not be economical.
  • You are traveling during off-peak dates. One of the best benefits of The Key program is designated seating for shows and activities. However, in general, there is more than enough seating for everyone -- especially if you choose to view a show during dinnertime or early in the day. We found that designated seating was not necessary and we got some pretty great seats for shows even without using our Key status.
  • You don't enjoy cruise ship Wi-Fi. Believe it or not, some people see cruising as the perfect time to unplug and unwind. They'd rather post pictures after returning from their cruise than waste precious vacation time glued to their smartphone. On our first cruise, this was us. We discovered that we loved cruising without Wi-Fi. If you feel the same way and know that you won't use the Wi-Fi one way or another, then I believe The Key package would be unnecessary because Wi-Fi is one of the key benefits.

Bottom line

In short, purchasing The Key package comes down to your budget and desire for some exclusive benefits. The Key package is a great way to feel like a VIP on your next Royal Caribbean cruise without busting the budget. Sure, it's not a must-purchase program but it is a fantastic option to have.

Royal Caribbean Makes Website Error, Refunds Guests

  • March 13, 2023

Booked Royal Caribbean guests were taken by surprise recently when they saw a new package called “Premier Pass” available for purchase for their sailing on the cruise line’s website.

independence of the seas exterior aerial

The package, which was listed for $88.99 for the entire length of the cruise, appeared on Royal Caribbean’s website this past weekend. The description said, “Introducing Premier Pass, our newest and most innovative vacation package for 2 guests.”

It listed the following as inclusions :

  • Welcome bottle of Veuve Clicquot
  • Priority embarkation and debarkation
  • Inside Access tour (two guests)
  • Officer’s lunch (two guests)
  • Unlimited internet access (two devices)
  • Captain’s toast and photo
  • Wine pairing with the sommelier (two guests) – wine is complimentary
  • Laundry service (one bag per cabin)

The webpage said that the offer applied to bookings made between March 10, 2023, and March 15, 2023, and applied to select sailings departing between March 14, 2023, and December 31, 2023.

Many guests thought the offer sounded way too good to be true, and speculated that it was an error and would soon be pulled from the Royal Caribbean website. They were right, as the cruise line quickly retracted the offer on March 12th.

In a response to inquiries about the Premier Pass, Royal Caribbean said “We apologize for any confusion. The Premier Pass was listed in error and is not a Royal Caribbean product. It’s inclusive to our sister brand Celebrity. If you purchased the package a refund will be processed back to the payment type used at the time of purchase.”

Although it was a mistake on Royal Caribbean’s site, Celebrity Cruises offered Premier Pass on select sailings up until the cruise industry shutdown.

  • Officer's lunch (two guests)
  • Unlimited internet access (two devices)

I don't see it for either of my sailings between those dates, and yes, that price seems way too good to be true. Unless that's $88.99 per day.

Haha

I know, but I was only charged $88.99!

sandebeach

Not showing for any of my cruises. What cruise did you get it for?

  • Welcome bottle of Veuve Clicquot - $50
  • Inside Access tour (two guests) - $200+
  • Officer's lunch (two guests) - $100+
  • Unlimited internet access (two devices) $100+
  • Laundry service (one bag per stateroom) - $35

That's $500 right there not counting things that don't necessarily have a firm price.

December 8, 2023 sailing of Adventure of the Seas.

Random question. Did you book with a travel agent? Maybe it's some limited offering for certain agencies.

Cool Cruiser

I just got it too! I hope they don't try to cancel because that is an amazing deal.

I have this offer too for Dec 29 on Oasis.  I had to read it a couple times to be sure I understood -- it's less than purchasing internet access by itself!  I originally booked this cruise via the RCCL website and then transferred it to a TA.  I booked the package and can confirm it is $88.99 total not per day.  I did NOT yet cancel the internet package I had previously purchased just in case this is some kind of mistake listing so I wouldn't lose the price I got for it (which is less than what it is listed for now).

Fine print says this " Offer applies to bookings made March 10, 2023 – March 15, 2023 and applies to select sailings departing March 14, 2023 – December 31, 2023."  however I made this booking months ago so this is why I am thinking there is a non-zero chance this is a mistake listing that gets cancelled.

Editing this posting because after I posted this I re-read it again and it says " Introducing Premier Pass, our newest and most innovative vacation package for 2 guests.".    I bought this for myself and my wife (so I was charged $177.98) but I wonder if I only needed to buy one of them?  This seems to indicate ONE package is good for TWO guests.  I might call RCCL during the week to figure this out.

I see this available on just one of our sailings that we have booked, the 3 Night Bahamas cruise on Independence on 5/12.

Seems like they may be testing it out and possibly roll it out to other sailings. As anybody tried it yet?

Maybe it's only available for two-person reservations. All mine are three.

54 minutes ago, smokeybandit said: Random question. Did you book with a travel agent? Maybe it's some limited offering for certain agencies.

No, we booked while on board Oasis in December.

So google tells me this is something Celebrity offers.

Watch this turn out to be a glitch.

I have it listed on a February 2024 cruise with 3 people in the room. Not sure how that works out if one of the occupants is a child, with the priority embarkation and debarkation. I also have it listed on my April 7 '23 cruise but not on my September 29, '23 cruise.

13 minutes ago, smokeybandit said: Maybe it's only available for two-person reservations. All mine are three.

We have 4 people in our reservation and still see it.

Same here I have two rooms booked with my children in the other room.  They are not little (ages 19 and 17) but I am hoping that if I buy two packages they can at least take advantage of the internet, ship tour, and priority boarding.  It's such a good price I wouldn't even care if we didn't do the lunch or the wine.

Are you all seeing it under VIP Passes?

Just now, smokeybandit said: Are you all seeing it under VIP Passes?

No, a new category called packages.

I don't see a Packages category, but I was able to find it.

It's $88.99 per person, not per couple, but still, a heck of a deal. At least on paper.

Yes it allows me to put both of us in the cart and only lists one guest if I only put one of us in the reserve. However, why does it say for two guests and for two devices? Seems very confusing and needs clarification.

Please let us know.  We booked it for both legs of our odyssey b2b 4/8 & 4/16 plus Mariner and Adventure later this year.

Not for me. I have two upcoming cruises on Anthem, one next month and the other in July, and it's not showing on either. 😕

It absolutely has. 😂

And perhaps the “Inside Access Tour” will be inferior to the “All Access Tour.”  I look forward to hearing people’s experiences.

Regardless, it is a good price for internet for two devices plus some goodies

i'm already in a suite but booked this as soon as i saw the thread. then read through it and canceled as i bought 2 packages when only one was needed for us 2 people

i already paid 158pp for the tour and i dont want to lose my good day/time so i'm going to keep that for now . anyone know how you book a time for the tour. i wonder if the concierge can 'merge' this pass and that purchase i made and give me a refund. i just dont wanna cancel my paid one and then find out this isnt the full tour as the other one is.

i also believe 100% this is a mistake. they cannot give this stuff away. it would be a loss.

It shows up for my Anthem cruise in Feb 2024... Which is beyond the "select sailings" date. I guess we'll see what happens.

I wonder if "Officer's lunch", "Captain's toast and photo" and "Wine pairing with sommelier" will all be at the same time?    This will be our first cruise.

If you purchase this the only thing you will get is a refund.

i dont see it on my liberty oct cruise

I have 9 cruises booked on Royal Caribbean for the rest of 2023.  Only the first 3 - all on Oasis - have this option.

I am able to put it in my cart for each of them.  No add-ons.  (like gratuity).  Just a flat $88.99.  A million per cent sure that this whole thing is a glitch.  Veuve Cliquot alone is $38 per HALF bottle at Total Wine.  Internet is a minimum of $17 a day now.

And the "Premier Pass Package" is PER CRUISE - same price on my 5 night and my 7 nights.
