I was lucky to go on the inaugural tour for TourRoc, and had an amazing time! The luxury tour bus (complete with A/C, leather seats, wifi, restroom, and power outlets), along with the knowledgeable tour director brought us to three different local craft breweries. We started out at VB Brewery, where we enjoyed our flight of awesome beer, and then had a tour of the brewing facility itself (where we got a secret extra tasting!). From there, we headed to Lost Borough, where the beer was equally amazing (and a few of us may have ordered from Sticky Lips right around the corner, which is totally encouraged!). The final stop of the day was over in Webster at Knucklehead Craft Brewing. This brewery had my favorite beer of the day, the Knockout Stout. This brewery also has a kitchen where they serve some awesome food as well! I would definitely recommend TourRoc to anybody who is interested in craft beer, or to anybody who is interested in learning more about it and the Rochester beer scene in general. Probably the best thing about TourRoc is you literally just have to show up and you're set. Your ticket price includes EVERYTHING - luxury transportation, a flight of beer at each brewery (or for those of you who are gluten free, wine, cider, or cocktails as available), snacks and water on the tour bus, and all tips for the driver and tour director. You are also welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages (alcoholic or not) on the tour bus as well! It's obvious that the detail that went into creating the TourRoc experience that the owners truly love Rochester and have a passion for local craft beer. Can't wait to go on my next tour!

April 8, 2024 - Total Solar Eclipse in Rochester

The Greater Rochester region is in the path of totality for the Total Solar Eclipse. Learn more and plan your eclipse visit today!

George Eastman Museum

Trip Ideas & Itinerary

Cheers to this news—Rochester has been named one of the top cities for beer in the country! In fact, Matador Networks called Rochester the “ best city for beer in the northeast ” and Smarter Asset ranked us on the list for best cities for beer drinkers in the U.S. With more than two dozen breweries in Monroe County alone, it is no surprise that visitors looking for cities with an amazing beer scene visit Rochester.

Enjoy lunch and one of the best views in Rochester at  Genesee Brew House . Genesee is the oldest brewery in New York State and is a leader in the brewing community. Opt for a classic Genesee Cream Ale or one of the craft options from the Genesee Pilot Brewery embedded within the Brew House. Take your brews to the Genesee patio and enjoy one of the best views in the city of High Falls, a 96-foot waterfall in the middle of downtown Rochester.

After Genesee, enjoy a drink at Three Heads Brewing . Order one of their rotating seasonal craft brews and enjoy it on their patio. (Pro tip: Visit on one of their live music nights!)

Continue your city-centric brewery tour at  Strangebird , the 2022 New York State Craft Brewery of the Year! The brewery boasts 24 rotating taps with a variety of styles and flavors, and a locally sourced, seasonal food menu. Grab dinner, or just have one of their beverages including a selection of wines, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options.

Your final stop today is Rochester’s original craft brewery,  Rohrbach Brewing Company . Founded in 1991, Rohrbach’s has been an institution in the local craft beer scene for more than 25 years. Visit the brewery’s Railroad Street Beer Hall (located in the public market district) and enjoy a classic Highland Lager or Scotch Ale, or a seasonal recipe like the Great Pumpkin or the Red Wing Red Ale.

After a hearty breakfast, start the second day of your brew tour with lunch and some flights at  Sager Beer Works . This cozy tap room is tucked away on a side street in the Neighborhood of the Arts. BONUS: After you finish up at Sager stop by Living Roots Winery , which is the first urban winery in the Finger Lakes and just steps away from Sager Beer Works.

Next up is Copper Leaf Brewing , located right by the Erie Canal in Pittsford. Offering a variety of hand crafted ales and lagers along with barrel aged and wild ales, they have brews on tap and cans to go.

There are several other breweries in the City of Rochester that are nearby, including Fifth Frame Brewing, Swiftwater Brewing, Nine Maidens Brewing Company, Heroes Brewing and Iron Tug Brewing, which is located in the popular Park Avenue neighborhood.

Fairport Brewing features two locations: one in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts and the other in the village of Fairport. Be sure to try a Fluffy IPA or a Timbucha (Kombucha brewed in house) during your visit. Also in the village of Fairport is the dining and drink destination of Parce Avenue, where you will find two additional breweries, a restaurant and Iron Smoke Distillery .

Your tasting adventure will next take you into the Finger Lakes as you follow the  ROC/FLX Craft Beverage Trail . With nearly 30 wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries on the map, and more popping up every day, the Rochester/Finger Lakes craft beverage culture is in full force.

Wrap up a weekend of exploring Rochester’s beer scene with a visit to  Young Lion Brewing , a women owned and operated brewery, tap room & event space overlooking the north end of Canandaigua Lake.

“Brewery Tour” Review of Genesee Brew House

rochester brewery tour

NOTE: We did not eat at the restaurant on the second floor but rather stopped just for the brewery tour on the first floor at the back of the gift shop. Unlike other tours have been on (Budweiser in St. Louis and Sam Adam's in Boston) they do not take you through the "operating" brewery that makes the product you see in stores. They instead set up a small scale what they term 20 barrel size brewery specifically for showing the process. The tour takes about 25-30 minutes then you get to the fun part the tasting. Its $2 donation to charity for 4 samples each about a half a pint from any of their on tap beers. Most are their primary commercial brands including Genny, Genny Cream Ale, Honey Brown Lager ect. in addition there are 2 additional brews are made in the 20 barrel system just for the tour tasting. When we were there the two were Brew House Robust Porter and Brew House Scotch Ale both were very good. All in all its a nice building with a view of the river. Maybe some day we will get back to try the food.

A friend of ours suggested the three of us have an early dinner here on a recent Saturday. I did not have lofty expectations and was blown away by the whole experience! There is a Genesee Brewery museum on the first floor of this beautifully restored brew house along with a gift shop and a 'tasting' bar. The second floor provides the restaurant and large bar area. There is a very nice outdoor patio on the second floor and a roof top patio as well (I'm told. We didn't venture outside as it is February in Rochester!) The views from the second floor and (I'm presuming) the roof are lovely. The primary interests being the upper falls of the Genesee River and downtown Rochester as well as the upper falls entertainment district across the Pont du Rennes bridge located at the West side of the Brew House property. The parking is free and plentiful. And, by the way, the food was GREAT, service was excellent. The prices are toward the high end of the scale, but the portions are VERY generous. They served the best broccoli and bacon soup I've ever had, thick and creamy. The burgers must be 1/2 pound and cooked to perfection. We can't wait to return, perhaps for dinner prior to a Rochester Americans or Rochester Knighthawks hockey or lacrosse game. www.geneseebeer.com/brew-house

I would not recommend this place if you like something other than plan tasting food, which tasted like a catered food even though they have a small cooking area. We went here on a family outing to enjoy some craft brews and the food. It is recommended that you ask for reservations or when you get there plan on a 30+ minute wait, which is fine because they have a store and beer tasting room down stairs. It has a great view on the balcony and upstairs of the river and falls. It took a while for the waitress to come around. The food – my wife had a pulled pork sandwich with potato chips, which was cold when she received it. I had the 3 sausages which were good flavor but tasted like they fried them not cooked on a grill, which would have been better, the sauerkraut was pan fried and slightly burned, the mashed potato were real potatoes and it was good, my son had Chipotle Burger with chips said it was good. Told the waitress about the pulled pork they did offer to replace it but my son and I had already finished out meal by the time the waitress came around again. We did not ask for anymore. They did not take it off the bill so I will not be back.

Went there for a late lunch ... we had a chicken wrap and a Rubin sandwich. Came with kettle chips and a very(!) small portion of dill pickle (I think they get 4 - 5 servings from a single dill pickle). Food was fine but unremarkable. Beer (of course) was great. Beer tasting portions are available on the restaurant menu or available as part of the micro brewery tour on the first floor. Service was fast although not overly friendly. The restaurant is on the second floor and a mini museum and micro brewery are on the first floor. As others have mentioned it is a great venue ... nicely remodeled, large screen/sports TVs and great views of the city. Bottom line ... a great addition to the city and a fun place to go. But don't expect the food to be the centerpiece of your visit.

I had heard that this was a fun spot for lunch or dinner. that is no exaggeration.had been meaning to get here for a while, and went to lunch with a friend, did some beer sampling and had an awesome burger. we decided to sit at the bar, although there were tables available. there is a little museum of Rochester beer history. and a shop with all sorts of cool Genesee and High Falls memorabilia and t-shirts etc. I bought Genny golf balls. every single staff member we encountered smiled at and greeted us. the bartender, Cary, was incredibly knowledgeable regarding all things beer and brewery. she was amazing, friendly, and made the whole experience fun. she even knew her golf, quite well too, I might add. there is a tasting room too. generous servings of great beers, ales and seasonals. our host for tasting was also in the know regarding all the products and talked to us about the processes of the microbrewery, which operates, visibly, just a few steps away from the tasting counter. way cool. and for the 2 bucks it costs for the tasting, it is quite generous and all the proceeds go to local charities, some of which are on the wall. the place was clean, including the rest room. then to top it off, we went out to the rooftop, at the suggestion of Cary, one of our new favorite bartenders, ( we eat and review often, so we know good staff when we meet them) and lo and behold - WHAT A VIEW!!! the high falls and the Genesee River at its best with a nice view of downtown. outstanding. I haven't had this much fun for lunch in ages. we will be back. the management needs to give kudos to this young lady, Cary, manning the bar and serving our food as well. hard working, pleasant and smart. i'd hire her in a second, along with a lot of the crew. good folks, good time. lots of free parking. enjoy. this one goes right to the top of the list as Theislanddog's favorite fun lunch spot in good old RoChaCha!!! rrochacha!
