Cabo San Lucas Mexico Port Guide

This sleepy fishing village turned celebrity vacation haven is known for its snorkeling, coral reefs galore, and a nightlife that rivals the biggest party destinations in the world. Located at the southern end of California’s Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is growing in popularity, attracting everyone from Hollywood stars to nature lovers with its tropical ease and natural beauty. Fishing enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their catch of the day to local restaurants, who will grill your fish onsite for you. On a Mexican Riviera cruise , a stop in Cabo San Lucas isn’t complete without a margarita or a wildly-popular local tequila tasting.

While on your Cabo cruise, don’t miss iconic sites like El Arco de Cabo San Lucas, where tourists flock to catch the sunset glittering off the massive arch-shaped rock formation. Snorkel and see the coral reefs along the Sea of Cortez, or do nothing but sunbathe at Lover’s Beach. When you need a slower day away from the incredible beaches and nightlife of Cabo San Lucas, head north for a day trip to the Todos Santos for art galleries, sleepy cafes, and a relaxed vibe.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Cabo San Lucas, you can still discover the beauty of the Mexican Riviera on one of our cruises to Puerto Vallarta . Browse our Puerto Vallarta cruises below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to cabo san lucas, el arco de cabo san lucas.

On your cruise to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, put $10 up for a water taxi from the marina to El Arco—it’s worth it. As one of the town’s most recognizable sights, this rock formation at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula provides unforgettable views of the Pacific Ocean unfolding for miles before you. Look out for sea lions and other wildlife at El Arco.

Lover’s Beach

While you’re sightseeing El Arco, tell your boatman to drop you at nearby Lover’s Beach. It’s not as secluded and romantic as the name implies, but it offers beautiful swimming and snorkeling opportunities. Come earlier in the day to beat the crowds, and bring sunscreen, as the beach is mostly unshaded.

Divorce Beach

Take a five minute walk from Lover’s Beach to Divorce Beach, but don’t worry—there’s no symbolism here. Divorce Beach is known for much more turbulent waters and a strong rip tide, so it’s not recommended for swimming. However, it’s a little less crowded as a result. Come to Divorce Beach for more space to sprawl out on your beach towel and get some sun.

See incredible coral reefs at this Mexican National Marine Park, perfect for travelers staying for a little extra time in Cabo San Lucas. It’s about a two and a half hour trip from the town’s main stretch, or just sixty miles north. Cabo Pulmo was vulnerable to intense overfishing, and was only declared a protected site in 1995. Today, it’s a beautiful place to windsurf, swim, or dive alongside manta rays, eels and other natural sea-life.

Learn More About Cabo San Lucas Shore Excursions

Top things to do in cabo san lucas, ride a camel on the beach.

Kids and adults alike will find that a tour of Cabo San Lucas atop a camel is a pretty magical way to experience the tropical California Baja region. Most tours include round-trip transportation and even tequila tastings or tortilla making classes for a full day of can’t-miss experiences.

Go Sport Fishing for Marlin

Cabo San Lucas isn’t called “the marlin capital of the world” for nothing. The area is famous for sportfishing. Whether you’re solo or in a group, sportfishing operations are widely available to take you on an excursion to the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Cortez for a great catch. Research which restaurants will cook whatever you’ve caught, and you’ve got lunch or dinner already set.

Whale Watch in Cabo San Lucas

Whale-watching in Cabo is a big deal—from December to April, gray whales and humpback whales migrate along the Baja Coast. This is the perfect excursion for wildlife lovers and kids. You’ll also learn a lot about how the environment of Cabo San Lucas is perfectly tailored to welcome these creatures to its shores.

Take a Day Trip to Todos Santos

If you happen to have extra time while on your Cabo cruise, take a road trip to Todos Santos, only about an hour from downtown Cabo San Lucas. Todos Santos is slowly waking up to tourism. Once a quiet fishing village, it’s now home to boutiques, art galleries, and colonial cobble-stoned streets. Good for a day trip, but head back to Cabo San Lucas for nightlife.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

Solomon’s Landing

Address: past the El Tesoro Hotel Lobby, Cabo San Lucas 23456, Mexico

This spot was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. While you’re exploring the Cabo San Lucas marina, stop in at Solomon’s Landing for fish tacos, tuna, or the catch of the day. You can’t go wrong with a margarita, either.

Address: Calle Libertad 806, Col. Lienzo Charro, Cabo San Lucas 23410, Mexico

For local seafood at a moderate price range, try Neptuno’s, whose menu boasts fresh ceviche, stuffed clams, sea bass, coconut shrimp, red snapper, and more. This small, shack-style atmosphere is unpretentious and casual.

Pancho’s Restaurant and Tequila Bar

Address: Hidalgo & Emiliano Zapata S/N | Colonia Centro, Cabo San Lucas 23450, Mexico

Pancho’s red building and glowing neon sign is instantly recognizable as you arrive. Book a tequila tasting at Pancho’s to learn the history and tricks of the tequila trade. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the menu at Pancho’s has everything from chips and fresh guacamole to grilled lobster tail or filet mignon.

Sunset Point

Address: Carretera Transpeninsular KM 6, Cabo San Lucas 23410, Mexico

If you’re looking for a romantic, upscale dinner for date night in Cabo San Lucas, head to Sunset Point. Highly rated for its gourmet pizzas and its sunset views of the water, Sunset Point also offers a spin on classic Italian, from Italian “tapas” to dessert-inspired cocktails.

Culture & History of the Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

There is evidence of humans living in Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding areas for at least 10,000 years, beginning with a group called the Pericu, who were hunter gatherers relying on the marine life. The Baja California peninsula Cabo San Lucas grew as a fishing village, and the early 20th century saw unprecedented tourism growth as the destination was discovered for its beautiful geography, marine life, and scuba diving, among other activities.

Cabo San Lucas Port Facilities & Location

There isn’t a terminal on your cruise to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, so cruise ships bring their passengers into the port in smaller boats. Make sure to allot extra time when you’re headed back to your cruise ship so you can be safely brought back to your ship. It’s about a ten minute boat ride from your cruise ship to the marina, and from there you can walk to downtown Cabo San Lucas along the waterfront. You’ll find ATMS nearby, a flea market along the waterfront to quickly pop in for whatever you need, and vendors lining the streets eager to talk with passing tourists.

Transportation in Cabo San Lucas

A walk from the pier to the center of Cabo is only about 15 minutes, but plenty of transportation options exist for you if your legs are tired. Try a water taxi from the cruise pier to Medano Beach or to Pelican Bay. Glass bottom boats are often available too. This is a good way for a small group to get to El Arco or the beach with little trouble. You can also hail a taxi from the marina to get to the center of town, or any destination in town you need. If you have a while in port and want to explore beyond the town proper of Cabo San Lucas, you can rent a car with Budget, Alamo, or National car rental services.

Shopping Near the Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

After taking a boat from your cruise ship into the pier, haggle with vendors at the flea market near the boardwalk for souvenirs and memorable trinkets. You’ll find jewelry ships and leather wares, Mexican pottery, and boutiques along Boulevard Paseo de la Marina, just one street over from many of the docks. You’ll find more shopping available in downtown Cabo San Lucas as well.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Carry a little bit of cash to cover tips, small purchases, or taxis while you’re in Cabo San Lucas. You’ll find ATMs all over, and credit cards are recommended for purchases at boutiques or more expensive places. Pesos are the official currency of Cabos San Lucas, but U.S. dollars (USD) is accepted in many establishments throughout the town too.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Los Cabos—or the Capes—sits at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula, a narrow strip of land whose varied geography makes for plenty of interesting and unusual activities. You can ride a camel, or enjoy more predictable pursuits including fishing, golfing and whale-watching. On your Cabo cruise you can visit picture-perfect El Arco, an arch that may look familiar thanks to its cameo on postcards and advertisements. North of the capes, you can drop by the famed Hotel California. And if you've worked up an appetite on your Cabo cruise, you won't be disappointed: Los Cabos offers plenty to enjoy at the table as well, with farm-fresh fruits and vegetables and, of course, seafood being the mainstays here. Regardless, Holland America Line makes sure that Cabo cruises have plenty of new and traditional things for guests to experience.

Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port Guide: 10 Best Things To Do

Pinterest Hidden Image

The Cabo San Lucas cruise port is a popular destination on Mexican Riviera itineraries. It is known for its iconic rock formations, including the majestic El Arco at Land’s End.

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, this vibrant port offers a perfect mix of activities for an unforgettable day. Want to see El Arco up close, go whale watching, explore the lively downtown, savor delicious Mexican cuisine, or relax on the beach? Cabo has it all. Recently, we cruised there aboard the Celebrity Solstice from Los Angeles , leaving behind the rainy spring for warm sunshine and stunning natural views.

Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

Do cruise ships dock in cabo san lucas.

Cruises anchor just offshore, near the famous Arch of Cabo and Marina Cabo San Lucas. A tender boat transports you from the ship to the port in a 10-minute ride.

Is Cabo San Lucas a tender port for cruise ships?

Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port is a tender port. This means the cruise ship will anchor offshore in Cabo San Lucas Bay and transport passengers ashore.

tender boats getting ready at cabo san lucas

We’re usually cautious about tender ports due to the potential delays in disembarking. Tendering speeds can vary greatly—sometimes it’s quick, while other times it may take hours, depending on the cruise ship’s and port’s efficiency.

For instance, on Celebrity Solstice cruises, tender tickets are distributed in the morning at the Martini Bar on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving later than the given time means receiving a higher ticket number, which could delay your departure to port.

If you do not have access to priority tender, booking a tour sponsored by the cruise line can expedite your tender process, as these tours typically receive priority.

What to do in Cabo San Lucas from a cruise ship?

There is no shortage of things to do for cruise ship passengers in Cabo San Lucas. You can book an excursion through your cruise line or explore independently. Upon reaching the port, numerous activities and tours are readily available for booking.

What is Cabo San Lucas famous for?

El Arco in Cabo San Lucas

aerial view of lovers beach and divorce beach in cabo san lucas

Cabo San Lucas is home to the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, also known as El Arco. This iconic rock formation at the peninsula’s southern tip is a must-see. You can take a boat tour to get a closer view of El Arco and the surrounding marine environment, teeming with sea lions, dolphins, and whales (depending on the season).

What to do in Cabo San Lucas for a day?

The most popular thing to do in Cabo San Lucas cruise port for a day is a boat tour of Land’s End to see the Arch, with some time included at Lover’s Beach, where you can swim and explore the rock formations.

Tips For the Day in Cabo

A busy walkway at Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port, shaded by a large blue canopy. People are strolling along, some stopping at the various shops on the right, which include a pharmacy. The scene captures a sunny day, with clear skies visible beyond the canopy.

The secure area where you get on and off your tender at Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port.

The marina area of Cabo San Lucas Port offers limited things to do, primarily numerous pharmacies and shops typical of a cruise port. For more engaging experiences, consider booking a shore excursion, negotiating with a tour operator outside the tender area, or exploring independently further.

Tours and Shore Excursions

marina at the cabo san lucas cruise port

We intended to book a shore excursion through our cruise line at Cabo San Lucas, a tender port but found that everything was already booked. Similarly, all worthwhile independent tours were sold out.

Typically, we either explore independently or pre-book tours. Fortunately, it was easy to negotiate a fair price for a tour of Land’s End and whale watching with a tour operator just outside the tender area.

If you haven’t booked anything in advance, plenty of tour operators will wait outside the tender area to arrange a fun day. After disembarking, we approached a reputable vendor outside the tender area. Along the marina’s boardwalk, numerous shops offer tours.

Transportation Options

water taxi with passengers in cabo san lucas

Water Taxis: These are the most popular choice for cruisers disembarking at the port. You can book and negotiate tours or transportation to nearby attractions directly from the dock.

Taxi Cabs: Taxicabs are available outside the marina, and taxis can reach nearby locations or head into town. Prices can be high, so agreeing on the fare before you board the cab is important.

US dollars are widely accepted at the port and are the preferred currency. Credit cards are also accepted at establishments that have credit card facilities.

Sun Protection

The sun in Cabo can be intense, making sunscreen and a hat essential, especially if you’re planning a boat tour. Even shaded areas won’t fully protect you as the sun reflects off the water. If you forget a hat, you’ll find vendors selling them around the port area, where you can negotiate prices. I even added a new hat to my collection during my last visit!

Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port

1. take a boat tour of land’s end, see el arco.

land's end cabo san lucas view from cruise ship

A boat tour of Land’s End is a must-do when visiting Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port for the first time. At the southern tip of Cabo, this remarkable rock formation is where you’ll find El Arco, the iconic granitic arch that dips into the sea at high tide.

From the deck of our cruise ship, the view was already impressive, but we decided to hop on a water taxi for a closer look. You get to see El Arco up close, along with Pelican Rock, the Sea Lion Colony, Lover’s Beach, and Divorce Beach. The area is busy, and the tours move quickly, allowing you to take in many sights briefly.

If the tides are low, you might want to ask the water taxi to drop you off at Lover’s Beach or Divorce Beach. You can explore these spots, swim, or go snorkeling for an hour or two—it’s a great way to soak in the natural beauty and relax.

2. Relax at a Nearby Beach

Can you walk to a beach from the cruise port in cabo san lucas.

Canary Beach (Playa Pública): The closest beach to Cabo San Lucas Cruise Port, only a 5-minute walk away.

Medano Beach: If you’re looking for a beach with facilities, restaurants, and bars, this popular beach is about a 30-40 minute walk from the port.

Visiting Mexico often brings to mind two things: beaches and tacos. If you’re in Cabo for a short period and prefer a more laid-back experience, consider spending some time at one of the nearby beaches instead of booking a busy tour.

Playa del Amor (Lover’s Beach)

lovers beach in cabo san lucas

Famed for its secluded, romantic setting, Lover’s Beach features golden sand, clear turquoise waters, and stunning rock formations. Accessible only by boat, timing your visit with a favorable tide is crucial; high tide can submerge the beach entirely, making it unsafe.

Despite having no facilities or lifeguards, Lover’s Beach can become quite crowded, especially on days with multiple cruise ships in port. Vendors often stroll the beach, selling various items.

El Medano Beach

busy day at el medano beach cabo san lucas

Playa Medano is the most popular beach in Cabo San Lucas. It is a 10-15-minute taxi or water taxi ride from the port or about a 30-40-minute walk. Known for its lively atmosphere, the beach is lined with restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s a hub for tourists looking to eat, drink, and engage in water sports like parasailing and jet skiing. However, it’s not the place for quiet relaxation.

Cannery Beach | Playa Pública

Playa Pública is the closest beach to the cruise port. It lacks the commercial activity found at other beaches, so it’s quieter and ideal for a peaceful swim and sunbathing session. Remember to bring your beach towels from the ship.

Other Beaches by Taxi:

  • Chileno Bay Beach: A 20-minute ride away, great for snorkeling.
  • Santa Maria Beach: Arriving at this horseshoe-shaped cove is approximately a 20-minute ride.
  • Palmilla Beach: A 30-minute ride from the port, this beach offers a relaxing setting.

Tour Ideas: Beach Day at Chileno Bay [ book here ]

3. Experience a Whale Watching a Tour

Whale watching is a highlight in Cabo San Lucas, perfectly positioned on the migration paths of several whale species, including humpback, gray, and blue whales. The peak season from December to March offers the best chance to see these majestic creatures frolicking and breaching in the waters around Cabo.

As your cruise ship approaches Cabo San Lucas, keep an eye on the ocean—especially if you’re visiting during whale season. Viewing from your balcony or the ship’s deck might reward you with sightings before you disembark.

In Cabo, you can book whale-watching tours that often offer the option to combine a visit to Land’s End. These tours depart from local marinas and offer a fantastic opportunity to get up close with the whales.

Along with a memorable food tour in Mazatlán , the whale-watching tour stood out as a top experience. We were amazed by the number of whales close to our boat and the sheer joy of these encounters. Despite previous trips, a couple with us mentioned this was the most whales they’d seen in Cabo San Lucas. Remember, while sightings are common during the season, they are not guaranteed.
