The Top 5 National Parks For Seeing Wild Orangutans

Where can you see orangutans in the wild, orangutans in the wild are a wonder to behold..

While you may have been to your local zoo to see orangutans playing on a rope course, seeing them in the wild in Indonesia is something really special. There are two species of orangutans in the world, and you can find both in Southeast Asia. Bornean orangutans live on the island of Borneo and their slightly longer-haired, paler cousins, the Sumatran Orangutan, on the island of Sumatra.

There are a variety of tours, national parks and rehabilitation and conservation centres that will get you closer to this remarkable species in Borneo.  Here are our favourite places to spot orangutans in the wild, without interrupting their way of life.

But wait something to consider before you choose your, orangutan destination….

As orangutan numbers decrease more and more, it’s important to choose an experience that doesn’t cause harm.

Making sure you’re a part of a legitimate  ecotourism experience means that not only will you get to experience nature and culture with little environmental impact, but your local guide will teach and engage you in discussions about the local environmental issues. In Borneo, orangutans have been declared critically endangered – and their numbers are shrinking faster than we can save them.

We’ve recommended these five national parks because they all provide fantastic options to explore the natural home of the Bornean orangutan, without upsetting their remaining habitat.

How to steer clear of harmful tourist traps

There are places in South East Asia where you can get up close and personal to orangutans without stepping foot in the jungle. While some are legitimate rehabilitation centres, others are posing as sanctuaries where the orangutans have been illegally traded or hunted. Some ways to spot them are:

  • The use of leashes or cages
  • Visitors feeding or touching the animals
  • Trainers being rough with the animals
  • The animals being prompted to do tricks
  • Animals who look unhappy, mistreated or frantic

Tanjung puting national park, central kalimantan, indonesian borneo.

Tanjung Puting National Park has been called one of the natural wonders of the world. A vast and dense rainforest that spans over four thousand square kilometres, Tanjung Puting is full of wild orangutans who love the tree tops and swampy mangroves. The best way to get a great view of wild orangutans is to travel down the Sekonyer River on a Klotok. A Klotok is a type of river houseboat, used by locals to transport goods up and down the river, and also by tourists as a great way to get around.

The easiest way to get to Tanjung Putting National Park is via Klotok. It’s a good idea to make sure your tour booking includes or can arrange an airport or hotel transfer, as well as transport to and from the park. Between travelling on a Klotok, bonding with a local tour guide and spotting the elusive Bornean orangutan throughout your trip, Tanjung Puting National Park has it all.

The best part? Tanjung Puting is also home to the well-known research facility Camp Leaky , where you can meet wildlife researchers, get up close with orangutans in rehabilitation and other creatures of the jungle.

Make your way through Tanjung Puting with us, at  Orangutan Trekking Tours . Our ecotours help the Green Team buy back areas of the forest to protect them from illegal palm oil farmers and poachers, and they’re a fantastic way to explore the rainforest and all its inhabitants.

Kutai national park, east kalimantan,  indonesian borneo.

Kutai National Park is located in East Kalimantan on Indonesian Borneo and is home to around two thousand orangutans. Unfortunately, a large part of this forest has been devastated by deforestation and fires in the past , which has left only 30% of the original forest behind. This means that the forest is no longer the green wonderland it was, but it is on its way to recovery and still worth a visit.

There are two main access points for tourists to the park. Along the road between Sangatta and Bontang you’ll find Sangkima, with a number of old national park buildings still standing. It provides fantastic photo opportunities of the orangutans, otters and monitors lizards from the easily accessible loop platform. Sangkima has a walking trail and boardwalk that will take you to one of the largest trees of the forest. This area, due to its easy accessibility, is under growing pressure from tourism.

Prevab is a more remote section of the park that was preserved, and the forest here is in fairly good condition. It is accessed via a 25 minute boat ride on the Sangatta river . It’s here that you will be able to see orangutans as well as an array of exotic flora and fauna, such as sun bears, flat-headed cat and long-tailed macaque. Trekking through the Kutai National Park requires both a permit and a local guide .

Gunung palung national park , west kalimantan, indonesian borneo.

Gunung Palung National Park is estimated to be home to around two thousand orangutans The forest in Gunung Palung National Park is quite dense and less visited by tourists, which has helped the growth and protection of its diverse habitats, including mangroves, swamps and lowland forests. The park was given official National Park status in 1990, but it has a history of mismanagement. Until recently, tourism to this area was taken away from the control of the locals and exploited by a company who made travelling to this area far more expensive  than  it should be. Luckily, this struggle is beginning to end and tours operated by local villagers are now taking place again.

One of the unique things about tours through Gunung Palung National Park is the absence of the tourism industry. There are no real pathways or roads, and the primary place of accommodation is camp Lubuk Baji, a wooden building that sits on stilts and has been likened to a tree house . The orangutans that call Gunung Palung home aren’t used to seeing people, which makes the furry apes of this park wilder and harder to find. But this means it’s twice as rewarding when you do see them swinging through the trees!

Betung kerihun national park, west  kalimantan, indonesian borneo.

Betung Kerihun National Park runs along the Malaysian Borneo border, Sarawak. It has four main waterways that run through from the other side of the border. Throughout the park are small villages of locals, some only accessible by long boat. The locals live in houses suspended on the river banks above potential flood levels, called ‘Long Houses’. The tours through Betung Kerihun National Park are primarily run by the Nanga Potan people who supply long boats, insight into their culture and opportunities to see wild orangutans in this region. It is a key area for conservation in Indonesia.

A great way to experience this part of Borneo is by bike. Between some of the villages, there are narrow pathways which can take either motorcycles or bicycles. While this experience is seasonal, it provides a great ground-floor view of the forest, and a bit of a workout for the willing tourist. Bornean Orangutans are not afraid to come down from the trees, and you might just have a face-to-face encounter with one of these amazing creatures as you cycle through the forest.

GIF: Orangutan Rowing Longboat at Camp Leaky, Borneo

Danum valley conservation area, sabah, malaysian borneo.

This park is technically not in Indonesian Borneo, but we’re giving it a special mention due to its eco-friendly, conservationist ethics.

Located on the Malaysian side of Borneo Danum Valley Conservation Area , this is the most accessible of the National Parks that we’ve mentioned. There are many walking trails through the park, including a suspended walkway. A popular choice for accommodation is the Borneo Rainforest Lodge which sits alongside the Danum River. There is no roughing it here, with premium accommodation, including optional spa packages, so you can see the rainforest in style.

There are a couple of wild orangutans who call the surrounding trees home , although it is not guaranteed; you may not have to leave the lodge to see wild orangutans here. The lodge has strict guidelines for guests when leaving . These are put in place to minimise tourism’s effect on the surrounding forest and wildlife and are common among eco-tourism accommodation providers.

So, how can you help?

Do your research and choose travel and tour companies that promote true eco-tourism. Avoid places that fit the description of a harmful tourist trap and avoid contributing to the ongoing struggle of this ecologically diverse island. Follow the rules set out by lodges and tour guides.

Your eco-conscious travel will help support the local people who are working to make a difference, and not just financially. By talking and sharing images with the locals who run these tours, we generate the right kind of conversation about the endangered Bornean orangutan.

Itinerary Borneo Orangutan Tour

Day 1: pangkalan bun - kumai port - tanjung harapan      ▼.

Your Orangutan Tour begins upon arrival at   Pangkalan Bun Airport on the island of Borneo , better known by the Indonesians as Kalimantan. Upon arrival at the airport, your guide will be waiting for you. You will transfer to the port of Kumai in about 15-20 minutes by car, where you will embark on a great adventure! You arrive at our traditional wooden boat, called a ‘klotok’. Our guide will reconfirm to our crew that everything is ready to go, and the cruise upstream starts on the famous Sekonyer river abroad a klotok.

Tanjung Harapan

If your flight arrives early (before 12.00AM), you can arrive on time at the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center where at 3 in the afternoon, the orangutans are fed by the Rangers of the National Park and you can have the first close encounters with them. The meaning of ‘Tanjung Harapan’ is ‘Cape of Hope’. This first camp has more wetlands and therefore has more mosquitos in the afternoon, so make sure you put on enough mosquito repellent.

Here you also can do the reforestation, where you can be volunteers to plant a tree, and so take pride that you have contributed a grain of sand to conservation with your step over there.

Afternoon river cruise

After visiting this rangers camp, you will continue your journey upriver, resting on the boat while we look for animals in the nearness of the Sekonyer River.

In the afternoon it is very common to see groups of proboscis monkeys and macaques in the treetops, jumping from one tree branch to another, or to even see crocodiles or lizards in the shallow waters on the sides of the river.

Prepare for the sunset and enjoy the exquisite food prepared by our jungle crew . The boat is moored on the side of the river to spend the night. Tonight, you can take a walk through the jungle to look for nocturnal animals such as snakes, tarantulas or even if you are lucky, you can find luminescent mushrooms or tarsier monkeys.

Meals : Lunch – Dinner

Accommodation : Klotok boat

DAY 2: PONDOK TANGGUY - CAMP LEAKY      ▼

Today you will wake up with the sounds and the colours of the jungle. Without a doubt, you will never forget how you woke up on the river, surrounded by the overflowing nature.

Pondok Tanggui

After an extraordinary breakfast on board, you will arrive on time to visit the Pondok Tanggui Camp at the feeding time for animals (9AM). Little by little, you will see how the treetops begin to move and then you will see the silhouettes of the orangutans gradually reaching the feeding platform . Pondok Tanggui was a release camp for young orangutans that we rehabilitated- preventing the orangutans from moving away due to a lack of food and ending up outside the National Park , with the following risks of falling into traps of settlers or palm oil plantation fields.

After the orangutans begin to leave, you will return to the klotok to continue further upstream. You will witness how the colour of the river changes and you will have the opportunity to see crocodiles and large monitor lizards, along with Gibones and Narigudos monkeys. Off course, you will enjoy your lunch in this lovely setting.

You will arrive at Camp Leakey, the old orangutan rehabilitation centre. It was founded in 1971, when a student at UCLA University in Los Angeles, called Birutte Galdikas, began studying the orangutans there. The name Camp Leakey comes from Birutte’s own professor, paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey.

At least 200 orangutans have already been cured and returned to the jungle thanks to this centre. However, since 1995 the Indonesian government has banned the introduction of more orangutans into this camp, so the orangutans are increasingly adapting to freedom .

Today, this camp is used for behavioural and feeding research for orangutans. You can also visit the small museum founded by the scientist Dr. Birutte Galdikas.

Trekking back to klotok

After finishing the observing of orangutans in this camp, you will do a gentle trekking through the jungle back to the boat to search for free orangutans and other animals, if the weather conditions permit. You will have the opportunity to learn a lot about the jungle from our local guides , some of whom them were born in the jungle.

They’ll explain how to look for animals or plants, and you can listen to their experience of life in the jungle. The jungles of Borneo , that have given life and have been home to the shelters for million of years, are jungles that under the watch of their ancestors, are still capable of fulfilling every single individual’s needs.

Food, water, medicines, etc… But never throw anything in your mouth without your guide’s recommendation. In the afternoon, if it does not rain, the boat will be docked near a congregation of fireflies and you can enjoy the show of its luminescence.

Note: The Birate Galdikas Museum at Camp Leaky is currently closed for maintenance purposes. Regrettably, visits to this site will not be possible until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will keep you updated on the reopening of the museum.

Meals : Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

DAY 3: KUMAI PORT - PANGKALAN BUN      ▼

Today we end our stay in the jungles of Borneo. In the early morning you will have breakfast on the boat, go back to the port and return to the airport by transfer. The departure of the ship will be at last at 10am , but we adapt to your fight schedule in case that your flight leaves earlier in the morning.

If you decide to take a flight in the afternoon, we can take you at 10 directly to the airport. If you want a city tour in the town Arut to be transferred to the airport later, this can be organized at additional costs. Thank you for join us in this Borneo Orangutan Tour by Come2indonesia!

BORNEO Travel Guide: The Land of Orangutans and Dayak Tribes

When is the best time of the year to do this tour.

Our favourite time for travel in Indonesia is between April to October, although Indonesia is a great year-round destination, offering memorable experiences for all kinds of adventures. July to August are the peak summer months. In West to Central part of the weather is delightfully warm and it’s a popular time for travellers to visit for holidays, whilst if you wish to travel from October to April, the Eastern part Indonesia, like Banda and Raja Ampat, would be the best option.

If you wish to have a relaxing journey in Indonesia with less crowds, the shoulder months of April to June and September to October are ideal and slightly more economic. If you must travel in ‘high season’ but want to avoid the crowd, worry not, there are numbered of unbeaten track in Indonesia ready to be explored.

What should I bring?

The tropics is a warm and often sweaty place, especially if you have Borneo or Sulawesi included in your travel.  Check out our suggestion on What to Wear:

  • Comfortable and light shirt and at least a pair of long sleeves
  • Comfortable walking shoes or trekking shoes if your trip include some trekking
  • Shorts and long pants
  • Couple of pairs of socks
  • Waterproof Jacket/Raincoat

Depends on the type of travel, you may also need these in your What to Bring list:

Underwater Trip:

  • Dive Insurance
  • Dive certificate
  • Certificate of Nitrox (for those who are using Nitrox)
  • Dive equipment except Tanks and Weights. Please consult your travel expert to find out if the equipment is inclusive or not in your booking
  • Swimsuit/Dive suit
  • Adaptor DIN or INT
  • Sunscreen SPF +40
  • Waterproof bags

Landtour and Trekking:

  • Small backpack for daily important item
  • Travel Insurance, which covers trekking and sport risk

How Do I Get to Pangkalan Bun?

To go to Pangkalan Bun there are 3 main options:

From Semarang airport (about 3.5 hours from Yogjakarta by car, we arrange this transfer by private car with AC from Jogjakarta to Semarang as well as vice versa) From Jakarta in direct flight. If you come from Jakarta, we offer you for the previous night, the transit hotel FM7 Resort, which includes transfers airport – hotel – airport and breakfast. From Surabaya in direct flight. If you come from Surabaya, here we offer Ibis Budget Surabaya Airport for the previous night, located within airport area and Standard Room (double/twin)

How Hard is Our Tour?

We have classified our tours in 3 different classes. Always check which one suitable for your condition. If you have any doubt, you may consult to our travel expert.

Easy: Suitable for most people in good health. These trips can include short walk for days with around 2–3 hours in good paths and at low altitudes.

Medium: A reasonable level of fitness or technique is required, as these trips can require sustained endurance levels as the trip may include longer days of approximately 5-6 hours of activity or/and in higher altitudes, or snorkelling in strong current.

Hard: These trips are physically demanding and best suited for people with a high endurance level, good level of fitness and exercise regularly. Days can be long around 7-8 hours of activity, often at high altitudes, in remote regions and sometimes without a support vehicle nearby. Travellers may be required to carry their backpack, trip with trekking overnights without access to normal toilets or accommodations.

Is there a shower on the boat?

Yes, the boat is equipped with a wooden bathroom that has a western toilet and a shower. The water drains directly into the river, so we will give you an organic soap to avoid contaminating it. We would appreciate it if you use it.

What time does the tour end?

The tour ends after breakfast usually around 10 am. If your flight leaves earlier, the crew will adapt to the schedule to drive you to the airport on time.

What about if my flight back is in the afternoon?

In this case, we can drop you off in the city so you can explore it on your own. But if you prefer, we can accompany you with a private car to take a walk around the Arut River (especially if you like photography) and then drop you off at the airport afterwards. This service has an extra cost.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You are embarking on an adventure to places and amongst people whose lives are very different from your own. Many aspects of life in Indonesia will seem unusual. Remember that these are often the same aspects that make an area an exotic and attractive destination. While boat expeditions are considered easy, no trek is easy, even those rated easy or moderate. In addition to the personal physical challenges you may face, travel conditions can present unexpected obstacles, such as rough and bumpy roads and changeable weather. To prepare for this pack a flexible and relaxed attitude. Bring a spirit of adventure and inquiry, a healthy sense of humour and a willingness to encounter the unexpected and you will find your trip to Indonesia the adventure of a lifetime!

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

Our Orangutans and Dragons tour will take you to see two of the most amazing animals on the planet, both only found on the islands in Indonesia. This unique adventure is unlike anything being offered and provides you with two once-in-a-time destinations in one.

Firstly, we will take you to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan. Tanjung Puting National Park is a unique place. It is not only home to the orangutan, but also the rare proboscis monkey and the false gavial crocodile. During your time in the park you will be living aboard our river boat also known as a klotok. The klotok is well equipped with basic amenities, at night you will sleep on deck or in the downstairs cabin on a comfortable mattresses with a mosquito net. Our crew will cook delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The klotoks come fully equipped with safety features including life vests and a first aid kit. When not walking through the jungle, you can relax on deck watching the wildlife, read a book or just laze the day away.

And then it's onto the Komodo Islands. Your 4 day Komodo Islands tour is a great way to see this unique part of Indonesia. The Komodo National Park will be your home for 3 days and 3 nights as you stay on your "live aboard" boat. You will see the amazing ecosystems, reach remote villages and visit Rinca Island. The 1,817-square-kilometer Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the treasures of Indonesia. On this journey, you will see the amazing komodo dragon firsthand, whilst experiencing the wild natural beauty of their habitat. You will see some of Indonesia's most unspoiled and remote islands, visit beautiful pristine beaches and visit charming local villages. The area also boasts some of the best snorkeling on the planet. Here you will swim among reefs, sharing the azure waters with an abundance of local marine life, including manta rays and sea turtles.

There is the option to select from 2 itineraries. Once starting in Jakarta and visiting the orangutans first and the second starting in Bali and visiting the Komodo islands first *Subject to change due to local conditions.

Don't use AC boats for more luxury. AC is not needed in Tanjung Puting because of the fresh breeze and the comfortable night temperatures. Moreover, AC boats have a big environmental footprint, make more noise, create bigger waves (disturbing the wildlife in the river), and lock you behind windows, spoiling the jungle vibe. Also, they're expensive.

Instead, just stay overnight at the Rimba ecolodge , located at the edge of the park. The rooms have AC, WiFi, and hot water. This is cheaper and more comfortable. We can book the ecolodge against local tariffs, and transfer you to/from the lodge during the tour. But for the magical jungle experience you should sleep on the boat deep in the jungle.

We had a 2N/3D houseboattour and this was the absolute highlight of our holiday in Indonesia! Where to stay in Pangkalan Bun?

It is common for visitors to start the tour upon arrival at the airport, and to fly out on the same day the tour ends. In order to start the tour rested and to accommodate the risk of a delay of your flight, you could consider to start the tour on the day after your arrival and spend the night at a good hotel in Pangkalan Bun.

Because the tour ends early on the last day, there is no need to stay overnight at the end of the tour, except if you would like to rest and enjoy a hot shower before flying to your next destination.

Recommended hotels in Pangkalan Bun in the top, middle and budget segment are the Grand Kecubung Hotel , Arsela Hotel and Hotel Bahagia , respectively.

How to get to Tanjung Puting National Park?

Fly to Pangkalan Bun. There are direct flights between Pangkalan Bun and Jakarta, Semarang and Surabaya. You can check and book domestic flights via Traveloka .

If you start the tour on the same day of your arrival, we will simply pick you up at the airport and start the tour right away. However, we advice you to arrive the day before your tour starts and stay overnight in Pangkalan Bun. The next morning we would pick you up at the lobby of your hotel and start the tour.

PS: While rare, flights to Pangkalan Bun are cancelled sometimes, and when that happens it is usually on a very short notice. This is a stressful event, further exacerbated by a poor reachability of the customer service of airlines. If your orangutan tour starts on the same morning that your flight should arrive in Pangkalan Bun, then a flight cancellation usually means that you have to take a flight on the next morning; your tour starts a day later and you have to shorten your tour by one day. Since we prepare everything for the dates that you have booked, you would have to pay the full price also if we have to shorten the tour by a day. To prevent that a flight cancellation ruins your holiday, we advice you to take at least one of the following measures to accommodate flight cancellations:

  • Take a travel insurance
  • Arrive in Pangkalan Bun the day before your tour starts
  • Start on the day you arrive, but book at least 4 days for the orangutan tour. If everything goes fine you just have a nice 4 day tour without any travel insurance fees. If your flight gets cancelled, you could still do the 3 day tour which is sufficient to see everything, and the extra price you have paid for the 4 day tour can be considered as an insurance fee.

What time does the tour start/end?

Start. We will align the exact pick-up time with you ahead of the tour. If you stay overnight in Pangkalan Bun, we pick you up at the lobby of your hotel between 9 am and 10 am. In case you arrive in Pangkalan Bun on the same day that your tour starts, we pick you up at the airport and start the tour immediately. If you land before 11:30 am we will follow the default tour itinerary. We can also accommodate (but not advice) an arrival in the afternoon, but then you obviously will have less time in the park.

Note: In order to see the feeding at Tanjung Harapan - which starts at 3pm - we need to leave Pangkalan Bun latest at 11:30 am . It is recommended to fly to Pangkalan Bun the day before the tour starts to avoid that a flight cancellation (small but real chance) would ruin the trip.

End. The last day is only a cruise back to Kumai, and the tour ends after breakfast. We will leave Tanjung Puting National Park early in the morning, and you will be dropped off at your hotel or at the airport in the early morning. Ideally you fly out on your last day between 8:30 am and 2 pm, but also in case you have an early flight to catch, no worries: As long as you mention your flight schedule and you are ok with getting up early, you can also catch a flight as early as 7:30 am.

Should I arrive the day before the tour starts in Pangkalan Bun?

Yes! In fact, this is such an important point, that we emphasize this also in other parts of this FAQ.

While rare, flights to Pangkalan Bun are cancelled sometimes, and when that happens it is usually on a very short notice. This is a stressful event, further exacerbated by a poor reachability of the customer service of airlines. To prevent that a flight cancellation ruins your holiday, we advice you to take at least one of the following measures to accommodate flight cancellations:

  • If you want to start the tour right away regardless, then book at least a 4 day orangutan tour. If everything goes fine you just have a nice orangutan tour without any travel insurance fees. If your flight gets cancelled, you could still do that is shortened by one day, and the extra price you have paid is the replacement of a travel insurance fee.

To prevent that a flight cancellation ruins your holiday, we advice you to take at least one of the following measures to accommodate the possibility of a flight cancellations:

  • Take a travel insurance.
  • Arrive in Pangkalan Bun the day before your tour starts.
  • If you want to start the tour right away regardless, then book at least a 4 day orangutan tour. If everything goes fine you just have a nice orangutan tour without any travel insurance fees. If your flight gets cancelled, you could still do that is shortened by one day, and the extra price you have paid you should see as basically the replacement of a travel insurance fee.

What is the best period to visit Tanjung Puting National Park?

You can visit Tanjung Puting throughout the year. The temperature is rather constant and while it is often raining in Kalimantan, historically the most dry period has been July-September and the most wet period has been January and February. However, in recent years the rainfall has been more unpredictable, so the above should not be delt with too strictly.

Partly for the above reason, the most popular period to visit Tanjung Puting among travelers is between June and September . However, besides the weather advantages of this period, there are several downside of doing your tour in the period June - September:

  • It is very crowded , which spoils the experience for some people.
  • It is relatively expensive since there is a lot of demand and limited boat availability.

Considering the crowds and the value for money, in our opinion the best time to visit Tanjung Puting is in the shoulder months March & May and October & November . Even the wet months (December, January, February) are very nice months for visitation since the wet season is usually relatively mild in Tanjung Puting National Park.

In case you don't have the flexibility and are restricted to the high season period, as long as you manage your expectations that it will be crowded and you book your tour well on time (at least 5 months notice), you will still have a wonderful experience!

Should I take the 3D, 4D or 5D tour?

3D2N. We advice to take the 3D2N tour if you want to see as much as possible in as little time as possible. It is fantastic value for money as you get to see all feeding stations in Tanjung Puting. Unfortunately, you will not have any time for a short trek, or a night trek.

Note: It is recommended to arrive in Pangkalan Bun the day before the tour starts, which is important in particular for the 3D2N Orangutan Tour. If your orangutan tour starts on the same morning that your flight should arrive in Pangkalan Bun, then a flight cancellation usually means that you have to take a flight on the next morning; your tour starts a day later and you have to shorten your tour by one day. Since a 3D2N orangutan tour is the bare minimum that is recommended, shortening the 3D2N tour by one day is impractical. Moreover, since we prepare everything for the dates that you have booked, you would still have to pay the full price for the tour you have booked and not for the tour you got following your flight cancellation.

4D3N. The 4D3N tour we advice to anyone who would like to take the time in Tanjung Puting and is especially interested to combine visiting the feeding stations with short jungle treks and a night walk . You would also visit a  reforestation site and the  Sekonyer jungle village .

5D4N. The 5D4N tour we advice to anyone that is more adventurous, is into a long jungle trek , together with rangers in a more remote part of the rainforest. At the end of the jungle trek, we return to our boat by a canoe through a small jungle river. There are no other activities in Tanjung Puting that will take you further away from the crowd than this trek, but be prepared to get a little bit dirty.

What meals are served during the tour?

This is one of the things we try to stand out with!

Our goal is to spoil our guests with mouthwatering, delicious meals , because we realize that it adds to the experience to have a well prepared meal in the heart of the jungle on a romantic wooden boat.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are served in the top deck on the dining area, while the fingerfood, snacks and drinks are served throughout the day. You’ll have access all day to tea and coffee. If you have a preference for a specific drink, please let us know in advance via the booking form.

Do you have any dietary wishes?  Vegetarian, Vegan, nut or gluten allergies? No worries, we have that all the time. Just let know about it and we'll take care of it.

What are the facilities on the boat?

The boat is a traditional Klotok wooden river boat.

We use comfortable Klotoks, with simple but Western toilets and a shower, as opposed to an Indonesian squat toilet or a basket of water to shower in ("Mandi").

There is a top deck exclusively for you, with a dining table in the back, a lounge area in the front and mattrasses under a mosquito net that will be prepared for you in the evening. The crew is in the bottom deck.

Do I share the boat with other travelers?

No, all our orangutan tours are private. This means that the boat is exclusively for your group and that you have your own personal boat crew.

All presented prices in our booking form  correspond to a private orangutan tour.

Can I get seasick on the boat?

No, that is highly unlikely. The river is quite still, and small waves are only occasionally created by passing boats.

Will I get wet on the boat when it rains?

No. Although the boats are on default open on the sides to allow visibility towards the forest, in case of rain they can be closed completely with removable tarps.

Which animals live in Tanjung Puting National Park?

The main reason people visit Tanjung Puting is because of the Orangutans, the park is also home to the bizarre looking proboscis monkey with its “Jimmy Durante” nose as well as seven other primate species. Clouded leopards, civets, and Malaysian sun bears cavort in the park, as do mouse deer, barking deer, sambar deer, and the wild cattle known as banteng.

There are over 230 species of birds, including hornbills, deep forest birds, and many wetland species. Tanjung Puting is well known for its “bird lakes,” seasonal rookeries for a half a dozen species of endangered waterbirds, including the only known Bornean nesting grounds for white egrets.

There are two species of crocodiles (you may spot one while cruising!), dozens of snakes and frogs, numerous threatened species, including the fortune-bringing and highly endangered “dragon” fish also known as the Arwana (bony-tongue).

Among the most flamboyant of these animals are the many species of colorful birds, butterflies, and moths found in the Park.

How does the rainforest look like in Tanjung Puting National Park?

In Tanjung Puting National Park, you'll see the lasting marks of environmental harm from the 1990s, alongside the park's remarkable comeback, largely thanks to tourism.

As we float down the Sekonyer River on our Klotok, lush plants line both sides. But take a closer look: the National Park thrives on the right bank, while the left is dominated by palm oil plantations. Luckily, the National Park itself remains mostly untouched by the palm oil industry. However, rampant illegal logging before the 1990s, along with forest fires, has led to much of the rainforest regrowing, resulting in mostly secondary forest today.

The rise of orangutan tours has changed things. Local communities now benefit more from preserving the rainforest than destroying it. This has led to a remarkable recovery in recent years, making Tanjung Puting National Park a shining example of successful eco-tourism.

How much should I tip the staff?

Tipping is common in Indonesia, and the staff will be extremely happy and flattered if you decide to do so, but it is of course voluntary and not expected.

There is no rule for how much to tip, as it really depends on how satisfied you are with the service and on your budget. Some clients really insist to get an indication, so we will give the rule of thumb that for every day couples could consider tipping the guide 100.000 IDR per day and 50.000 IDR per day to the cook, captain and boat helper each.

Please consider this very indicative, and deviate from it as you wish, depending on your budget and your group size. In the end, any amount is really appreciated .

Are there other places where i can see orangutans?

Among the best places in the world to see orangutans, are Tanjung Puting National Park (Kalimantan) and Gunung Leuser National Park (Sumatra). We offer tours in both places with certified, local guides.

Both are quite well accessible by air from Jakarta. Which of the two is better, depends on your personal interests and on your budget.

Generally speaking, orangutan tours in Bukit Lawang are suitable for adventurous travelers that like relatively long treks, are in shape, and love to camp in the jungle. The tour is by foot and the accommodation is typically in basic jungle camps. We return with an exciting tube raft via the jungle river. Additional advantages are that you can combine such orangutan trek with other activities (volcano treks in Berastagi, relaxing at Lake Toba, visiting villages, cycling tours etc.) and that it is relatively cheaper than the orangutan tours in Borneo. Because the tour is private, we can easily adjust the trek length and difficulty to the ability and wishes of the group and therefore this tour is also suitable for families with children.

In contrast, the orangutan tours in Tanjung Puting are by boat as you cruise through the river, and the occassional treks are very easy and short, and the accommodation is typically on the boat. It is ideal for travelers that want the excitement of a jungle adventure, but without the practicality issues of not having a (good) toilet or shower or sleeping on a thin mattress. Another practical advantage is that the location where the tour starts and ends - Pangkalan Bun - has an airport. Although this cruise is still relatively cheap for Western standards, it is ca 2 times more expensive than the jungle treks in Bukit Lawang. Also, there are fewer activities around Tanjung Puting National Park, than around Gunung Leuser National Park.

For more information about the jungle treks in Bukit Lawang as well as the tour packages we offer there, click here .

Are there any general tips?

Here are a few additional tips that you may enhance your tour experience:

1. Although Indonesia is famous for its coffee, in our experience, tourists do not like the standard coffee served at homes or in the boat, which is basically hot water with filter coffee, but then unfiltered. So if you drink coffee, we recommend to bring your own instant coffee (or French Press).

2. You may want to consider to bring your own alcoholic drink to optimally enjoy the beautiful and romantic setting from the Klotok. If you are lucky, you can store these in the fridge of the staff, but chances are that you can only drink it warm. Alcoholic beverage is not sold in Pangkalan Bun and therefore needs to be bought before arriving here.

3. In case you have time, you will appreciate staying overnight in Pangkalan Bun before (and/or after your) tour. You'll start your tour all rested, finish your tour with a hot shower, stay longer in Tanjung Puting National Park, and don't need to stress about flight delays. The best hotel in town is the Grand Kecubung Hotel .

4. Although there are plug sockets aboard, we do not recommend to use these to charge expensive gadgets (smartphones, tablets, etc.) because the power engine of the boat does not supply a constant voltage (this holds for ALL boats). Please consider to bring an external battery charger , which can be bought at any outdoor store.

5. If you have a hammock, bring it! The ultimate chill experience is to lay down in your hammock in the klotok as you cruise through the lush jungle!

6. Bring a refillable bottle , not only for your trip to Tanjung Puting but generally for your stay in Indonesia. You would dramatically reduce your plastic consumption by not using a plastic mineral water bottles. You can refill the bottle with the large mineral water barrel we have onboard.

7. Purchase online an e-simcard before you arrive in Indonesia. You don't need a physical card (hence "e"-simcard), and there are many providers, such as MobiMatter . Download the app and just purchase it if you have a smartphone.

For cancellations with a shorter notice period, there is no refund of the deposit.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Our advice is to arrive in Pangkalan Bun the day before your tour starts. In case of a flight delay, there will be no implications for the tour.

In case the tour starts on the same day the flight was supposed to arrive, then a flight delay means the tour starts at the delayed arrival time. Depending on how much the flight is delayed, the itinerary may be customised. No (partial) refund applies for the shortened tour.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Our advice is to arrive in Pangkalan Bun the day before your tour starts. In case of a last-minute flight cancellation, a new flight could usually be booked for the next day, and there will be no implications for the tour.

In case the tour starts on the same day the flight was supposed to arrive, then a flight cancellation usually means the tour starts a day later than what was booked:

  • In case your flight is cancelled 2 weeks prior to tour start, you can change your booking details with us without penalties, but this is subject to availability.
  • In case your flight is cancelled within 2 weeks prior to tour start (usually flights are cancelled on a very short notice), we are not able to change your booking. The tour will start upon your arrival a day later, but since we have hired the boat and the boat staff for the cancelled day as well, there is no refund for the lost day.

To prevent that a flight cancellation ruins your holiday, we advice you to take a travel insurance and book flights that arrive the day before your tour starts.

PS: While rare, flights to Pangkalan Bun are cancelled sometimes. This is a stressful event, and since airlines are not easily reachable, sometimes clients take it out on us and demand a refund for the cancelled day. While a flight cancellation is an event beyond the client's responsibility, it is also beyond our responsibility. Our responsibility is to organize the tour for the dates that the client has booked, for which costs need to be made in advance. In return it is the client's responsibility to be here at the start of the tour. And for unforeseen events that could complicate that, clients can take a travel insurance.

Tanjung Puting National Park – Where the Amazing Journey Starts

There is no better place to have your orangutan Borneo tour than Tanjung Puting National Park . Being located in the Central Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia, the national park is one of the best ecotourism destinations on earth. This is a wonderful conservation site where endangered species of orangutans are protected. Not only that but this national park is also the home of many exotic birds (220 species) and other tropical animals. 8 rarest monkey species are protected in this national park, including the proboscis monkey with its distinctive long nose.

Trekking the dense rainforests that cover the conservation area, you will be amazed by monkeys, gibbons, wild boars, macaques, wild deers, bush pigs, and other animals that live there. Not to mention the pristine vegetation that you can only find in a few tropical forests on earth. Don’t forget to keep your eyes out when crocodiles live in the rivers along the national park as you trek through its tropical forests. You also need to know that it has three main camps established by the Orangutan Foundation. They are Camp Leakey, Pondok Tangui, and Tanjung Harapan. Those three camps are rehabilitation centers where ex-captive orangutans are placed. There, you can also see the staff feed the orangutans from a close but safe distance. The primates are monitored and trained before they are taken back to the wildlife. By visiting the rehabilitation centers, you will get an opportunity to see these beautiful primates closely and learn more about them.

How to Get to Borneo?

One of the easiest ways to get to Borneo is by taking a flight into Pangkalan Bun Borneo airport. It provides several options for direct flights every day from Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, as well as other Indonesian airports. The flight from Jakarta to Borneo usually takes only an hour. Most of the time, the flights to Borneo are quickly booked in peak season. However, you need to be careful since some of the flights might be operated by small agents and don’t have official websites. In this way, make sure to book a flight through a trustful and well-reputed online tour agent for a convenient trip. From the Pangkalan Bun airport, you will be driven to Kumia Port to get access to Tanjung Puting National Park and the journey only takes 25 minutes. You will take a boat down the Sekonyer River from Pangkalan Bun to explore the national park. There, you can start your journey to witness the amazing life of orangutans in their original habitat in the dense Borneo rainforests.

The Best Time to Visit Borneo

Speaking about the best time for orangutan Indonesia Borneo tours, you have some options to choose from.

Read this post : How Do You See Orangutan Indonesia Borneo

June/ September

June or September is the best time to avoid crowds when visiting Borneo to see orangutans. Is it the shoulder season when fewer people come to the tourist destination? In June or September, each feeding station only provides 15 boats for tourists at maximum. This number of boats is half lower than in the peak season that each feeding station usually provides 30 boats, even more for tourists. The weather is still fairly dry to conveniently explore the river along the national park in the months.

July/ August

July or August is the best time for Orangutan Tanjung Puting tours. This is when Indonesia is in its best weather and Borneo is in its driest months. You will find that the weather is nice and the temperature is perfect for the tour in July or August. However, you need to keep in mind that it is also the busiest season. Most of the feeding stations in the national park were crowded with people who wanted to see orangutans at that time. So make sure to book your orangutan tour in Borneo in advance.

Where to Stay?

Most of the time, tourists choose to stay in hotels around Pangkalan Bun before the Borneo Orangutan Tours . It is a small town with the shortest distance to the national park. Tourists often choose this option especially if they arrive a day before the tour. There are a few comfortable hotels and guesthouses you can find there. Most of the time, they only stay there for only one day or two. This is because not many things that tourists can do in Pangkalan Bun, except for taking a rest before the big adventure in Borneo rainforests.

What to Expect?

During wild orangutan tours , you will trek the dense forests of the conservation area. Here, you will see orangutans swing from one tree to another in a close distance. Make sure to prepare your stamina since the trekking paths are quite tough and the rainforests are dense. Aside from visiting the three camps established in the conservation site on foot, you can also cruise the rivers along the national park on a klotok. This is a traditional houseboat that has been the favorite of tourists. Aside from your tour guide, there will be a boat captain, a captain assistant, and a cook that accompany you during the cruising. Sitting on the deck of the houseboat while sipping a cup of coffee and seeing wild orangutans will make you feel lucky to have such experience. One of the best things about this orangutan Kalimantan tour is that you can stay in the klotok for 2 or 3 days. Many tourists choose this option since the dense rainforests make it hard for them to see the orangutans sometimes. Thus, staying in the houseboat will give them more opportunities to meet these amazing primates. Though the boat is not a fancy option it is quite comfortable. There is a dining table, some chairs, sun loungers, and mattresses completed with mosquito nets. Not only that but the houseboat is also equipped with a small bathroom, a sink, a toilet, a small freshwater shower head.

How Much Does It Cost?

A wild Borneo Orangutan tour usually costs about $d00 on average. This is the typical amount of cost that you need to pay if you join an orangutan klotok tour. However, the prices might vary based on the number of people you are sharing the houseboat with as well as the size, and the quality of the boat. With such a large amount of money, you can stay for a 2 or 3-day adventure in the dense rainforests of Borneo to see orangutans. Most of the time, the services included in the package are national park permits, all foods & refreshments while on the board, visits to three feeding stations, and transfers to or from the airport. Not only that but the services also include orangutan trekking tours with a professional and knowledgeable local guide. You might need to pay less if you go on a solo tour in Borneo. However, it is not suggested especially if you are new to this kind of wildlife tour. Additionally, by hiring a professional local guide to accompany you along the tour, you can make the most out of your money. However, you need to keep in mind that the Indonesian currency is quite flexible. So, you need to be well-prepared in case the currency exchange value changes.

What to Wear

To have an enjoyable orangutan Borneo tour, you need to prepare some things and pack necessary items. As for the clothes, make sure you wear something comfortable for jungle trekking. The climate is usually warm in the rainforests but the temperature can get hotter or turn humid fast. So, t-shirts and hiking pants can be a good option. Make sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and pack sunscreen as well to avoid a sunburn. As the temperature turns chilly at night, you also need to bring jackets and long sleeve shirts. As for the footwear, light shoes are a perfect option to help you walk comfortably in the jungle. Mosquito repellent and a strong bug spray are also essential items to bring during the tour. It will also be better if you keep quinines in your travel bag to avoid malaria. Keep in mind to avoid drinking from the sink since it is only meant to wash your face and clean up your mouth after toothbrushing. Only drinking from bottled water is a good alternative to take. Since you don’t want to miss any moment with exotic creatures during the tour, just don’t forget to bring your camera. Make sure to pack additional memory cards and batteries for the camera as well.

OVERNIGHT:

For overnight, we will stay on traditional wooden boat for the whole night to make the price is COMPETITIVE and you have MORE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE WILDLIFE.  The accommodation on the boat provides better opportunity of sighting the crocodile, birds, monkeys and other animals at dusk or down at their night time resting place in the trees at the riverside. In the morning you will be waked up by the morning dew and "the concert of tropical rain forest creatures". A healthy meal for dinner and Breakfast is prepared by our expert cooks on Indonesian cuisine. You will explore the quiet and placid river on a traditional boat (many past tourists of us call it "African Queen" river boat style) to visit the Camp where you can trekking around in searching for orangutans as well as other endemic species of Kalimantan and other exotic fauna and flora. There are showers and western style toilet available on board.

Meanwhile, there is a riverside lodge across the river near Tanjung Harapan. This place allows you to have a nice sleep and good wash for the whole days. The river side has a very nice surrounding with the forest background, a lot of faunas to see and observe too. You will get additional charge based on the type of the accommodation you choose in the lodge if you decide to stay here. So if you prefer to stay overnight at the ecolodge, no problem… We can include it in the quotation. Just take into account, the price is expensive for such standard lodge, because this is the only lodge available there. OR You can also combine for sleeping on boat for 1 night in between, so you can have more experiences to enjoy the home of the Borneo orangutans. Indonesia Wildlife Holiday

orangutan tours bali

This exciting Borneo and Komodo islands wildlife adventure combines a gentle river cruise through the forests of Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo with a sea cruise aboard a traditionally built, ironwood phinisi schooner through Indonesia’s lesser Sunda Islands and the majestic Komodo National Park. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore Java’s cultural city of Jogjakarta, where you can discover the ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur, followed by a local train journey to the active Mount Bromo volcano and the dramatic landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You can also enjoy a few days on the beautiful island of Bali, combined with some mouth-watering Balinese cuisine.

Kalimantan’s meandering rivers remain the best way to travel through the lush rainforest jungles of Borneo, where a startling array of flora and fauna and a wealth of cultural and ecological treasures include indigenous tribes. Keep your eyes peeled for long-nosed proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, red langurs, brahmini kites, hornbills flying gracefully overhead, and Asia’s only great ape, the Orangutan. Drop into a renowned orangutan research and rehabilitation center, located in the heart of Tanjung Putting National Park and meet some of these magnificent creatures.

Visit the city of Jogjakarta, the historic and cultural soul of Java, which is known for its wonderful arts and is still headed by a sultan. Wander through the Sultan’s ‘kraton’ (walled city palace), which remains the hub of traditional life, as well as the Taman Sari water palace and the city market. Marvel at the sunrise over the 7th century Buddhist temple of Borobudur, one of Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites, and watch the sunrise again two days later over the spectacular Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and its smoke-spewing volcanoes. Cross the desert-like sea of sand of the ancient caldera and up a steep staircase to the crater rim of Mt Bromo, and peer into the smoking darkness below – the veritable gates of hell, redolent with sulphur vapors.

Your luxury Bali tour

Transfer to the gorgeous island of Bali for a tour of some of the island’s most iconic Hindu temples, from the jungle to the rice terraces to the sea. The magic continues with a cleansing purification ritual, a guided meditation session conducted by a Hindu priest, and a very special lunch in a blissful setting in the rice fields. You will also get to enjoy a day to yourself. Go exploring, see the art galleries, the museums, and a traditional market where you can shop for handicrafts and souvenirs before a tour of East Bali and the chance to unwind beachside.

The final leg of your Indonesia wildlife holiday is a fabulous sea cruise, which takes you through glorious scenery and a panorama of islands, exploring quiet coastal villages, waterfall-fed river pools, volcanic islands, a boatbuilding community, and a mysterious crater lake. Encounter an amazing variety of wildlife including the legendary Komodo dragons. Snorkel the kaleidoscopic beauty of the underwater world and embrace the chance to swim with gentle whale sharks and giant manta rays. Relax on pink beaches; trek to savannah-clad viewpoints at sunset; and witness the astonishing sight of hundreds of thousands of flying foxes emerging in a steady throng from the forest at dusk.

This luxury adventure tour is perfect for active fun-loving families or groups of friends. This is just a sample itinerary; the featured excursions, cruise vessels, and accommodations can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes. All excursions and transfers are on a private basis (private transport with private guide), with the exception of the cruise portion, which is typically done on a shared basis with other passengers unless you require a private charter.

Itinerary & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Welcome to the Borneo Rainforest

Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport in Central Kalimantan, you will be met by our local guide and transferred to the nearby port of Kumai. Here you will board your traditional riverboat called a  Klotok  and journey for approximately 2 hours along the Sekonyer River into Tanjung Puting National Park. Established as a national park in 1982 and composed of more than 400,000 hectares of mangrove swamp, rainforest, and dense jungle, the park is home to primates, leopards, lizards, and more than 600 species of birds. Tanjung Puting is notable for both its ecological and biological diversity as well as its orangutan conservation.

This afternoon’s excursion with a local guide will have you searching for orangutans and proboscis monkeys as well as other species of animals and birds that all call the surrounding rainforest their home.

Your accommodation during the trip to Tanjung Puting National Park will be on a  klotok , a traditional wooden river boat designed to navigate the waters of Indonesia and named after the engine noise – ‘klok tok klok tok’.

Orangutans and crocodiles

After breakfast, boating down to the orangutan feeding station at Pondok Tanggui. A journey of little over an hour, the jungle becomes denser as you slowly make your way north and there are good opportunities for wildlife spotting from the deck of the boat along the way.

The arrival time at Pondok Tanggui is scheduled to coincide with the morning feeding of the orangutans at 9 am. Accompanied by your guide and a local park ranger you will disembark the boat and hike along small tracks deep into the jungle where the feeding area is located. There will be ample time to witness these wonderful apes from close quarters before returning to the dock at approximately 10 am to continue your expedition.

Afterward, stream to the Sekonyer River and travel along a tributary known locally as ‘Crocodile River’ which, as the name suggests, is home to a number of these aquatic reptiles. Enjoying yet more superb scenery and a fresh lunch prepared by the crew en route, you will arrive at Camp Leakey in approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Established in 1971, Camp Leakey is a renowned the orangutan research and rehabilitation center located in the heart of Tanjung Putting National Park. Founded originally as just a research center, over the years the camp has expanded and now also focuses on conservation and rehabilitation as well as continuing to carry out important research about these fascinating primates.

There will be time to look around the center and meet some of the local rangers as well as witness the daily afternoon feeding. Should you desire, there is the option to take a short trek into the jungle surrounding the camp before heading back to your boat for the night.

Transfer to the heart of Java

After breakfast, return directly to Kumai from where you will be transferred to Pangkalan Bun airport to catch your flight to Semarang in the north of Java. There your local guide will meet you at the arrivals hall and you will embark on a 3 hours ride through the heart of Java to Yogyakarta.

Take a good night rest before tomorrow’s exploration!

Sultan's Palace and Market of Yogya

In the morning, take a short tour around the Indonesia-beloved city. Start with the Sultan’s Palace, designed to represent central aspects of Javanese cosmology and a fine example of Javanese sultanate architecture.

Next, visit the first sultan’s harem – ‘Taman Sari’, a water palace and garden built over 200 years ago.

Continue to Beringharjo Traditional Market, Yogyakarta’s biggest and noisiest market that dates back to the 18th century. Peruse its excellent selection of batiks, sarongs, keris, and antiques as you explore its bustling pathways.

Borobodur and Village Life

Depart in the morning to visit Borobudur, 42km west of Jogjakarta. With your guide on hand, explore this massive Buddhist Temple (the largest in the world) and discover the incredible history behind its construction.

Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled entirely by human labor and took more than 75 years to complete. The UNESCO Heritage site is still visible in its full glory, with magnificent carvings and its unusual bulky structure.

Take a short trip from Borobudur to visit the nearby Mendut temple. Older than Borobudur, this pyramid-shaped temple houses three impressively carved stone statues. You’ll also visit Pawon temple, a simple yet beautiful monument known for its precise symmetry.

Stop for lunch at a restaurant set amidst verdant rice fields before boarding a horse cart for a rustic ride through Candirejo village. Trundling along narrow lanes lined with traditional houses, catch glimpses of authentic village life such as villagers making cassava crackers, playing the gamelan, and harvesting chili. After the ride, return to Yogya.

Train Ride to Bromo

Begin today with a transfer to Yogyakarta railway station. Here you will board a local train and travel east through the volcano-dotted terrain to Mojokerto station. Disembarking at Mojokerto, you will be met by our local representative and driven to Bromo area. The journey will take in the region of 3,5 – 4 hours if done directly but with yet more classic Javanese scenery to behold, there is the possibility to stop for photographic opportunities along the way. Upon arrival in Bromo, you will be transferred to your hotel.

Sunrise & Bromo Trekking

With its huge crater and almost mystical-like scenery in all directions, Mount Bromo and its surroundings are stunning beyond question. Sunrise is the most magical time to view the entire Bromo landscape but this does involve a very early morning start. Firstly travel by normal vehicle to Wonotoro, a small village 2,000 meters above sea level and the gateway to the region. Then continue by private jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan in time for dawn. From this vantage point, you will have the best views not only of Mount Bromo but also of Mount Batok and Mount Semeru.

After witnessing a spectacular sunrise, you will return to your jeep and make the steep descent back down to the bottom of the volcano and then cross the Lautan Pasir (Sand Sea) to the base of Mount Bromo itself. The climb of approximately 250 steps to the rim of the crater is definitely worth the effort and you will be rewarded with yet more incredible vistas. After your visit, return to your hotel.

Transfer to Bali

Your driver will pick you up from your hotel for your drive to the airport – from here you fly to Bali, the Island of Gods.

UNESCO Rice Terraces and Temples

After a leisurely morning journey to Bali’s most photographed temple, Tanah Lot, a 16th-century temple precariously perched upon a craggy, wave-lashed rock. Continue onward to Tabanan to visit Taman Ayun, a Royal Family temple located in Mengwi. Built in 1634, it is part of the Subak (complex rice-field irrigation system), recognized by Unesco in 2012. The huge complex is surrounded by a wide moat to symbolize its status as the mythological home of the gods.

Finish the tour with a visit to Alas Kedaton, a megalithic sacred temple in a forest inhabited by mischievous monkeys and hundreds of big bats.

Spiritual Journey Through Time

Today we journey to Pakerisan Valley, an 8th Century World Heritage site and the birthplace of the Hindu Darma religion, to uncover the historical religious roots of modern-day Bali.

The day starts with a short visit to the very first Hindu temple in Bali, encircled by a small village that grew around this sacred structure. Here we will meet our guide for the day, an experienced researcher of Balinese spiritualism and curator of the Sukarno museum who will lead us to a temple nestled in the jungle; an ancient meeting point for Balinese priests to convene and write the following year’s calendar. Our guide will describe how people connect with God through the temple and demonstrate how to open your mind to the spiritual world.

Leaving the Jungle temple, we will head to Tirtha Mengening, a very small temple located next to Holy Spring-fed pools. Built in 1023, Tirtha Mengening roughly translates into “child waters” and offers a cleansing purification ritual conducted by a Balinese priest. After the ceremony, take a plunge into the cool spring waters of a gentle river, shaded by a large tree. Soak in the serene atmosphere, for this temple is seldom visited by tourists despite being one of the most sacred in the region.

Lunch at a special place, surrounded by lush rice fields still grown from the original species of rice brought by the first Hindu priests in the 8th Century. After lunch, there is an opportunity to visit the priest’s house where he will guide us in quiet meditation. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy your evening at leisure!

Snorkel on a colorful and vibrant coral reef above small geothermal fissures where air bubbles are released from the volcanic chambers below the seabed.

After a few hours under sail, spend the afternoon time on a deserted white sand beach on another volcanic island, this time an extinct one.

Wildlife spotlight: this lush indonesian island is a paradise for orangutan trekking.

There are three extant species of orangutan on earth today.

While Bali draws massive crowds of tourists each year thanks to its world-class resorts and stunning landscapes, it’s far from the only island worth visiting in Indonesia. In the western reaches of the country, Sumatra serves as the second-largest island in the nation and sixth-largest on the planet, with no shortage of fascinating cities and natural attractions to visit across its shores—yet when it comes to planning a truly bucket-list-worthy foray into the wilderness, it’s tough to find a better destination than Gunung Leuser National Park.

Officially established in 1980, this sprawling preserve is a crucial component to preserving Sumatra’s rich biodiversity, with just under 8,000 square kilometers of land that are brimming with vast swathes of pristine tropical rainforest. While the park plays host to a massive array of native reptiles and insects, it’s best known for harboring all sorts of charismatic megafauna, with Sumatran tigers, Sumatran rhinos and Sumatran elephants all calling the region home. Yet when it comes to ecotourism, one animal in particular draws tourists from all across the globe.

Indonesia is renowned for its high degree of avian biodiversity.

The planet is home to three extant orangutan species, and the northern reaches of Sumatra are perfect for spotting the aptly-named Sumatran orangutan. For best results, visitors can fly into the sprawling city of Medan and then embark on a three-hour drive to the village of Bukit Lawang, a charming community that serves as the gateway into Gunung Leuser National Park. The surrounding area was once home to a facility that was tasked with rearing orangutans that had been rescued from the illegal pet trade, and today, the descendants of these orangutans roam free, existing in the wild as they have for eons.

Of course, it’s best not to wander haphazardly into the wilderness in search of orangutans, so you’ll need an experienced guide to aid you on your journey—and fortunately, Sumatra Orangutan Explore is in place to ensure your trip goes smoothly. This local tour operator holds ethical ecotourism as a core tenant, ensuring that all participants keep a safe distance from the apes and prevent the animals from feeling unsafe or stressed. The company offers multiple options for guests including a two-day trek that involves an overnight stay in a jungle tent, while ambitious adventurers can book a five-day excursion that ventures into the verdant depths of the rainforest—and as an added bonus, it’s not just orangutans that might make an appearance for visitors.

Gibbons are often referred to as the "lesser apes" due to their physical differences from the great ... [+] apes.

Great apes abound across Gunung Leuser National Park, but smaller primates can also be found dotting the treetops, with residents like the southern pig-tailed macaque, North Sumatran leaf monkey and lar gibbon all calling the region home. Meanwhile, the park also acts as a paradise for visiting birdwatchers, with colorful species like the black-and-yellow broadbill and orange-bellied flowerpecker found flitting along the forest canopy—but perhaps the most impressive avian species to discover during your trek is the rhinoceros hornbill. Outfitted with a massive casque perched on the edge of its beak, these majestic beasts can reach a wingspan of roughly 1.5 meters.

While Sumatra may not be as popular a tourist destination as islands like Bali, Java and Komodo, the rich biodiversity and unique cities make this sprawling region well-worth visiting—and to sweeten the deal, Medan is just a ninety-minute flight away from Singapore’s Changi Airport. Whether you jet in just for orangutans or you tack on a few days to explore the gorgeous architecture and thriving food scene across Medan, the northern reaches of Sumatra are perfect for crafting a truly unforgettable ecotourism adventure.
