Stage 7: Tadej Pogacar completes domination with stage 7 win / As it happened

It was a dominant week for Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and he won his fourth stage on Sunday and secured the GC title at Volta a Catalunya. The Slovenian won the stage 7 sprint ahead of Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis). In the overall, Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep) finished 3:41 back for second and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) rounded out the podium at 5:03 down.

Stage 6: Tadej Pogacar's 30km solo seals stage 6 win on momentous mountain day / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar  (UAE Team Emirates) extended his general classification lead on Saturday with a solo victory on stage 6. The duo of Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep) battled on the final of five major climbs to finish 57 seconds back, Bernal using his second place to move into third overall and Landa losing time in second overall.

Stage 5: Axel Laurance wins stage 5 sprint with bike throw / As it happened

Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck) chalked up his first WorldTour win in a bunch sprint after an agressive day of racing on stage 5. The Frenchman out-paced Marijn van den Berg and Bryan Coquard.

Stage 4: Marijn van den Berg charges to stage 4 sprint victory / As it happened

The first sprinter's stage went to the script, with a three-man breakaway off the front for most of the stage before the fast men's teams chased them down, controlled the late attacks, and fought for position ahead of the finish. Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) took the win.

Stage 3: Tadej Pogačar does it again / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar made his second consecutive mountaintop victory at the Volta a Catalunya look easy as the UAE Team Emirates rider crossed the line solo with the stage 3 win at the summit finish at Port Ainé. He finished 48 seconds ahead of Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep) and 1:03 ahead of Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious). Pogačar now has a commanding 2:27 lead in the overall classification with four stages to go.

Stage 2: Tadej Pogacar dominates atop Vallter 2000 seizing overall lead / As it happened

As many anticipated, Tadej Pogacar  (UAE Team Emirates) dominated on the mountaintop finish at Vallter 2000, winning stage 2 and taking the overall lead at the  Volta Ciclista a Catalunya . Pogačar now leads the overall classification by 1:35 over Mikel Landa  (Soudal-QuickStep) and an additional three seconds over Aleksandr Vlasov  (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Stage 1: Nick Schultz narrowly beats Pogacar / As it happened

Nick Schultz (Israel-Premier Tech) won the opening stage of the  Volta a Catalunya  after a late attack inside the final kilometre in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The Australian struck out with a surprise attack 500 metres from the line at the end of the 174km opener to hold off a late-charging  Tadej Pogačar  (UAE Team Emirates) on the uphill finish.

Volta a Catalunya information

The 2024 Volta a Catalunya will be the 103rd edition of the stage race, which stands today as the fourth-oldest stage race in the world after the Tour de France, Tour of Belgium, and the Giro d'Italia.

The week-long race is a staple of the early season, bringing top Grand Tour contenders in the north-east Spain region of Catalunya to do battle in the hills around Barcelona and the mountains of the Pyrenees.

Mariano Cañardo is the record winner, having triumphed at the race seven times in the 1920s and 30s. Spanish cycling heroes Miguel Indurain and Alejandro Valverde are next on the honour roll with three wins apiece. The trio have taken 13 of 60 Spanish wins at the race.

In recent years, Adam Yates, Sergio Higuita, and Primož Roglič have taken overall victory on routes which include the well-used summit finishes at Vallter 2000, La Molina, and Port Ainé. The race traditionally concludes with a fast and furious hilly circuit race in Montjuïc Park in Barcelona.

The 2023 edition saw Roglič come out on top with two stage wins en route to a six-second overall victory ahead of Remco Evenepoel . The Belgian also came away with two stage wins, including a last-day battle with Roglič in Barcelona. Australian sprinter Kaden Groves made a breakthrough at WorldTour level with two stage wins, too.

2024 Volta a Catalunya route

The 2024 Volta a Catalunya route has yet to be fully unveiled, though the start and finish locations of all seven stages were announced in early January.

The traditional race finish in Barcelona's Montjuïc Park is unsurprisingly back, while Sant Feliu de Guíxols will host the opening stage for the third year in a row.

The second stage from Mataró to the summit finish at Vallter (!5.1km at 6.7%) looks likely to be a carbon copy of the one won by Giulio Ciccone in 2023. Stage 3 finishes up at Port Ainé (18.4km at 6.7%), where Esteban Chaves triumphed three years ago.

Stage 4 and 5 look set to end with sprint finishes in Lleida and Viladecans, while the penultimate day of the race heads back to altitude for a new summit finish at Queralt between Barcelona and the Pyrenees.

2024 Volta a Catalunya start list

Data powered by FirstCycling

2024 Volta a Catalunya contenders

Tadej Pogacar is the biggest name on the startlist this March

Tadej Pogačar heads up the startlist as he makes his way towards an attempt at the Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double. He'll be making his debut at the race and looks set to head up a strong UAE Team Emirates squad including João Almeida and Jay Vine.

The full startlist beyond the Slovenian star has yet to be confirmed, though a wealth of major GC should be lining up in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Movistar pairing Enric Mas and Nairo Quintana should be among them, as should Ineos Grenadiers duo Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal, and Visma-Lease a Bike's Sepp Kuss and Cian Uijtdebroeks.

Elsewhere, look out for Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ), Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep), and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek) to take starring roles in the high mountains.

Pronti, via e una maxi caduta coinvolge quasi l'intero gruppo: a terra finiscono tra gli altri Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Geraint Thomas , Daniel Felipe Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), Nairo Quintana (Team Arkéa-Samsic), Peter Sagan (Team TotalEnergies), Romain Bardet (Team DSM), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), Aleksandr Vlasov , Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Enric Mas (Movistar Team), Michael Matthews (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost) e Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroen Team).

Isaac del Toro Romero wins second stage of Tour Down Under, leads overall

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Isaac del Toro Romero of Mexico claimed his first professional win Wednesday when he took out the second stage of the Tour Down Under and with it first place on general classification.

The 20-year-old del Toro last year won the Tour del’Avenir, the amateur version of the Tour de France. He is competing in his first World Tour event for UAE Team Emirates.

Del Toro made an audacious lone break with just over a kilometer to go, coming from well back in the bunch, sweeping past the leaders and showing power to build a lead a more than 100 meters.

He held on comfortably to win the 141.6 kilometer (88 mile) stage from Norwood to Lobethal from New Zealand’s Corbin Strong and Briton Stephen Williams, both from Israel Premier Tech.

“It’s crazy,” del Toro said. “Last year was pretty crazy but this one has started very well.”

After two of six stages, Del Toro leads the overall classification by two seconds from Strong with Biniam Girmay of Eritrea and Williams a further five seconds back.

Jardi Christiaan Van Der Lee of the Netherlands and Luke Burns made an early breakaway Wednesday and led for most of the stage. They finally were brought back to the peloton with about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to go.

Luke Plapp went away with Jhonatan Navaez less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the finish, just as they crested the final climb. That created some panic and broke up the peloton.

The American road champion Quinn Simmons and Bastien Tronchon then gained a small break on the bunch and held out until about a kilometer from the finish. Just as they came back, del Toro made his winning attack, catching the leaders by surprise.

Visma-Lease a Bike put down early marker for Tour de France with impressive victories

The Dutch squad claimed a crushing win at Tirreno-Adriatico with their main man Jonas Vingegaard, while a less-formidable looking team still managed to take Paris-Nice against other Tour hopefuls

Words: Stephen Puddicombe

Another week, another clean-sweep of Visma-Lease a Bike victories. Much as they did a fortnight ago during opening weekend when Jan Tratnik slipped away late to win Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Wout van Aert triumphed at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne from the break, the team achieved another double of two of the most important early season races, with Jonas Vingegaard crushing the opposition at Tirreno-Adriatico, and Matteo Jorgenson claiming a surprise title at Paris-Nice . Following a 2023 season of unprecedented success, it seems that nothing can halt Visma-Lease a Bike’s momentum — and that none of their prospective Tour de France rivals can get near them.

Vingegaard’s win was expected, yet the manner in which he did so was still striking. Despite a modest time trial, he was untouchable in the mountains, attacking early on the hors category San Giacomo 28km from the finish to take the overall lead, then dropping everyone again on the Monte Petrano mountain top finish the following day to win another stage and seal overall victory. It was a performance of utter domination that indicates he’s well on track for achieving his major season goal of claiming a third successive Tour de France title.

Much less expected was Jorgenson’s success at Paris-Nice. Starting the race as at best an outside contender who’d only once before made the top six on GC at a WorldTour stage race, the 24-year old made the selection on the first uphill finish at Mont Brouilly, slipped clear with Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) on a climb 29km from the finish during a hilly stage six, then took the yellow jersey from the latter by being the only rider able to stay with the attacks of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) on the final stage.

volata tour de france

Jorgenson matched Evenepoel on the final stage of Paris-Nice to claim overall victory (ASO/Billy Ceusters)

It was a result that suggested Visma-Lease a Bike have pulled off another major coup by signing the American. His time at Movistar demonstrated he had clear talent, but he’s already come on leaps and bounds since signing for the team this season, preceding this breakthrough victory at Paris-Nice with some eye-catching rides on the cobbles during Opening Weekend, where he came 10km away from winning Het Nieuwsblad with a long-range solo attack. This all-around ability looks set to make him a very important rider for Visma-Lease a Bike — especially at the Tour de France, where Jorgenson is down to ride in place of the irreplaceable Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Tour this year in favour of the Giro. It seems fair to say that Van Aert’s shoes are impossible to fill, but the signs are that Jorgenson might be able to significantly mitigate the damage of his absence.

Visma-Lease a Bike will take particular encouragement from getting the better of rivals UAE Team Emirates to win both their stage race titles last week. Jorgenson took the yellow jersey from UAE’s Brandon McNulty on the final day, while Vingegaard reclaimed control of Tirreno-Adriatico after Juan Ayuso had established himself as the early front-runner with time trial victory. Yet despite again failing to win a stage race, having also lost the leader’s jersey on the final day of their home UAE Tour last month, the team have plenty to feel positive about. Ayuso was the best of the rest of what was a strong field at Tirreno-Adriatico, while 20-year-old Isaac del Toro continued his revelatory start to the season by finishing fourth overall. Paris-Nice may not have gone quite so well, with McNulty slipping to third overall while João Almeida and Jay Vine failed to stay in GC contention, but it needs to be remembered that these riders aren’t essential to UAE Team Emirates’ Tour de France plans. Rather, those that are selected will form part of the support team of leader Tadej Pogačar, who was not present at either stage race last week, but has started the form on fire with his huge Strade Bianche victory. With Adam Yates also soon to return from a concussion injury, it’s apparent that they boast a strength in depth of climbers that even Visma-Lease a Bike can’t match.

One of the reasons Matteo Jorgenson was able to win Paris-Nice against the odds was the inability of any team to control the race, which was in part an indictment of Bora-Hansgrohe. They were deploying their marquee new signing Primož Roglič for the first time, but the Slovenian looked well short of his best form and ultimately finished down in 10th overall. They signed Roglič in the hope of competing with Visma-Lease a Bike and UAE Team Emirates at the Tour de France this summer, but the fact they brought their A-team to Paris-Nice, yet still finished well behind the B-teams of both those rival squads, does not bode well. Though it’s far too early in the season and far away from their primary goal of the Tour de France to leap to any definitive conclusions, this is nevertheless a worrying sign given how dependably consistent the Slovenian was in stage races like this while riding for previous team Jumbo-Visma. He’d won 10 of his previous 13 appearances, and of those he didn’t win, it was usually explained away by injury problems. To see him exposed for a lack of legs like this was a novelty, and can’t help but raise alarm bells.

The team will be happier with how Tirreno-Adriatico went. Jai Hindley looked in great shape to finish third overall behind only Vingegaard and Ayuso, and the team also impressively took the race to Visma-Lease a Bike with domestiques Dani Martínez and Lennard Kämna ripping the peloton to shreds on the Monte Petrano summit finish. Yet even these apparently promising signs might bring with them more problems for the team. Both Hindley and Vlasov had expected to be GC leaders prior to the arrival of Roglič, and neither has been especially vocal about their willingness to play second fiddle to the Slovenian come the Tour . By outperforming him this week, they’ll feel emboldened in their case for GC leadership, and the established hierarchy at the team is already being disrupted.

As for the other rider expected to form part of the four-way tussle for yellow this July, Remco Evenepoel was happy with his second place finish and stage win at Paris-Nice. But his failure to win the race does raise more questions about whether his Soudal–Quick-Step team really is at the required level to adequately support a rider of his calibre chase stage race victories. It seemed as though Evenepoel probably was the strongest rider at the race, and, in his own words, felt he missed out on victory as a result of “tactical mistakes”. Had he a stronger team, those tactical mistakes might not have mattered. Had Evenepoel the kind of domestiques his rivals have at their disposal to support him, you can imagine them seizing control of the race on the small Côte de la Colle-sur-Loup climb that Jorgenson slipped away on, and therefore save the 54 seconds lost that day that ultimately proved to be the difference between the two at the top of the GC. Evenepoel will have Mikel Landa to support him in the mountains come the Tour, but Soudal–Quick-Step still seem short — especially given the quality of their opposing team rivals.
