Ultimate guide to the Citi travel portal

Ryan Smith

Editor's Note

The new Citi travel portal launched earlier this year , offering an enhanced user experience, more hotel options and a new feature for booking activities and attractions. Citi Travel with Booking.com is powered by Rocket Travel by Agoda, utilizing the features and booking availability of Booking.com's brands.

In this article, we will explore the functionality of the new Citi travel portal, discuss any potential drawbacks and clarify who can access this booking engine. Additionally, we will provide a step-by-step guide on using the portal to book your desired travel experiences and explain how to pay using your ThankYou points.

What is the Citi travel portal?

There are four main selling points for using Citi Travel with Booking.com.

First, it provides a one-stop shop for travel that you can pay for with your Citi ThankYou points while booking multiple elements of a trip simultaneously. This can be simpler than transferring points to separate airline or hotel partners and booking your trip piece by piece — and you can even use as many or as few points as you want. The downside is that you might achieve less value from your points to gain simplicity.

travel portal website

Second, the portal allows you to use points to pay for travel beyond flights and hotels, such as guided tours and theme park tickets. You can't do this with Citi's list of transfer partners, and you may achieve better value paying for travel with points in Citi's portal than you would by cashing out your points .

Third, certain card benefits require using the Citi travel portal. This is true of hotel benefits built into the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants) and Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ). We'll explore those below.

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Lastly, if you're paying for travel (and not using points), you may be interested in the bonus points available when using Citi Travel with Booking.com. Competitors like the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal , American Express Travel and Capital One Travel offer higher earn rates (depending on which credit cards you have) when booking your travel in the bank's portal rather than directly.

Through June 30, 2024, Citi cardholders can earn bonus points as follows:

  • 10 points per dollar on reservations for hotels, rental cars and eligible attractions with the Citi Prestige® Card (no longer open to new applicants) and the Citi Premier® Card

Through December 31, 2025, Citi cardholders can earn bonus points as follows:

  • 5 points per dollar on these same bookings with the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card (no longer open to new applicants) and the Citi Rewards+® Card (see rates and fees )

The information for the Citi ThankYou Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The fact that Citi's portal provides a one-stop shop for your vacation is its main strength. The ability to book hotels, rental cars and even entrance tickets to tourist attractions in one place (and even pay for these with your points) provides great simplicity.

How to use the Citi travel portal

Citi's portal sets itself apart from competitors by being available to anyone with a credit card earning Citi ThankYou points . For comparison, some travel portals reserve their best features for cardholders with expensive premium credit cards . Thus, you can access the portal with the $495-a-year Citi Prestige Card and the no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+ Card .

You can access Citi Travel with Booking.com by clicking this link and logging into your Citi account. If you have multiple Citi credit cards, you must select which card you want to use for booking travel.

travel portal website

Once you select a card, you're ready to start booking travel.

How to book flights using the Citi travel portal

Booking flights in Citi's portal functions similarly to other portals. You'll choose whether this is a one-way or round-trip flight and provide the route, number of passengers, dates and class of travel. Unfortunately, you can't book multi-city itineraries.

travel portal website

Here's an example search from Chicago to Los Angeles. Note that you can use cities for your search if you don't have a specific airport preference.

travel portal website

The Citi Travel portal offers many filters and sorting options to help you find the most suitable travel options. These filters allow you to refine your search based on price, duration, departure and arrival times, number of connections and even your preferred airline. Furthermore, you can sort the results using these options without losing any filtering choices.

To change the sorting order of the results, click on the "Best overall" drop-down menu on the right side above the price of the first result.

Once you have selected a flight, you will be prompted to provide passenger information, including names, dates of birth, frequent flyer numbers and known traveler numbers for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry (if applicable).

Additionally, before making your payment, you can upgrade to a higher class of travel if it is available. This is the first time you'll see the cost to book a main cabin fare instead of a basic economy fare.

travel portal website

And if your fare class lets you select a seat, you can do so before heading to the payment page.

travel portal website

On the final page, you'll choose how you want to pay (with your points, credit card or a mix of the two) and complete your purchase. The redemption rate is an underwhelming 1 cent per point. For context, our valuations peg ThankYou points at 1.8 cents apiece, which you should be able to get by maximizing Citi's transfer partners .

How to book hotels using the Citi travel portal

Booking hotels will feel familiar to those who have used other portals.

You should choose your Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card before beginning your hotel search if you intend to use those cards' benefits. Premier cardholders can use a $100 hotel credit each calendar year on a booking of $500 or more. In contrast, Prestige cardholders get a fourth night free on hotel bookings in the portal, available up to twice per calendar year.

travel portal website

From here, you can add filters to help you reduce your results, such as by price, neighborhood, star rating and nearby attractions.

Once you pick a property, you'll see details on its amenities and features.

travel portal website

Then, you can select your desired room.

travel portal website

After choosing a room type, you can pay with points at checkout. Again, each point is worth a lackluster 1 cent.

travel portal website

You'll also have the option to view the cancellation policy before paying. Since policies can vary, ensure you know whether it's possible to change or cancel your booking before you make the final payment.

However, if you book a hotel that's part of a major loyalty program — like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy — through Citi, you likely won't earn points, nor will you enjoy any elite status perks on your reservation.

Hotel Collection and Luxury Collection properties

Alongside its revamped portal, Citi has introduced two new hotel programs, namely the Hotel Collection and the Luxury Collection. These programs offer similar advantages to other luxury hotel programs offered by credit cards .

Reservations through the Hotel and Luxury Collection have no minimum stay requirements. However, access to the Luxury Collection is exclusive to Citi Premier and Citi Prestige cardholders.

You will receive guaranteed benefits such as daily breakfast for two people and complimentary Wi-Fi for Hotel Collection bookings. In addition to these perks, the Luxury Collection offers a $100 on-property credit, which can be used based on the policies of each hotel. Both programs also provide other benefits, such as early check-in, late checkout and room upgrades (specifically for Luxury Collection bookings, subject to availability at check-in).

Unfortunately, you can't filter search results specifically for Hotel and Luxury collections properties. To identify these properties, you must look for a tag or description indicating their inclusion in your search results.

travel portal website

How to book rental cars using the Citi travel portal

Searching for rental cars feels familiar and works quickly.

travel portal website

After providing your location, dates, times and age, click "Search." From the available results, you can use the following filters:

  • Vehicle type
  • Rental company
  • Free cancellation option availability

After choosing a car, you can see the full details and cancellation policy on the next page.

travel portal website

As with other items in Citi Travel with Booking.com , you can add your rental car to the shopping cart (if booking multiple travel elements) or go straight to check out to pay and reserve. Again, you can pay with points at a rate of 1 cent apiece.

How to book attractions using the Citi travel portal

One standout feature of Citi's travel portal is the ability to book attractions along with your hotels, flights and rental cars. This convenient option allows you to make a single transaction for all your travel needs, and you can even use your points to pay for them.

To access this feature, look for the "Attractions" option in the main search bar. However, depending on your location within the portal, you may need to click "More" in the drop-down menu and select "Attractions" from there.

travel portal website

Once you search for a destination, you'll see all available options— from entrance tickets for tourist sights to guided tours. For example, you can book a guided walking tour of the Hollywood Sign.

travel portal website

When you see an activity or tickets you want to purchase, click on the tile. This will take you to a page with details about this offering and cancellation policies.

One noteworthy option is Chicago CityPASS tickets, including access to five popular attractions. Click on "Check availability" in the top right corner to choose your preferred date to find pricing and availability.

travel portal website

As with other elements of Citi's portal, you can pay for attraction bookings using ThankYou points with a value of 1 cent apiece.

More things to consider about the Citi travel portal

Now that you know how to use the Citi travel portal, here's some general guidance to maximize your experience.

As always, we recommend comparing prices. There is no guarantee that Citi Travel with Booking.com will offer the best price for your trip. It's recommended to compare the prices you see on the portal with prices available when booking directly with hotels, airlines, rental car companies or tour providers.

If you plan to pay with points, check if you can get better value by using fewer points with Citi's transfer partners . Transferring points to programs like Wyndham Rewards may let you get more value from your points. Check out our guide to redeeming Citi ThankYou points for high-value redemption ideas.

Also, if you book hotels or car rentals through Citi's travel portal, you may forfeit any elite status earnings and benefits. Many loyalty programs require direct bookings to recognize elite status and provide associated perks. Evaluate whether the benefits you would be giving up are worth it.

Finally, Citi Premier and Citi Prestige cardholders have exclusive benefits within the travel portal. Premier cardholders can enjoy $100 off a hotel stay of $500 or more once a calendar year, while Prestige cardholders can get a fourth night free on hotel stays of four nights or more twice a calendar year. If you're making an eligible hotel reservation, you'll see the option to use your available benefit on the payment screen.

travel portal website

You'll also see the benefit(s) highlighted on the hotel search page if you have one of these cards. This includes information on how many more times your benefit can be used.

travel portal website

If you don't see these benefits, check the top right corner of the portal and ensure your Premier or Prestige card is the active card for your searches.

Bottom line

Citi's revamped travel portal allows you to search and make travel reservations for flights, hotels, rental cars, and even tours and attractions. You can book travel up to a year in advance and pay using your Citi ThankYou points or any travel credit card .

Additionally, if you hold the Citi Premier or Citi Prestige, you can utilize your hotel benefits through the portal.

However, it's important to consider potential tradeoffs. Assess your elite status with hotel or rental car companies and determine if you might get better value by booking your travel through another platform. If convenience is your deciding factor, this user-friendly portal offers many results when planning your upcoming vacation.

The American Express Travel portal offers valuable benefits to American Express cardholders, including special prices. Depending on which card you hold, you may also be able to pay for travel with Membership Rewards® points and get access to perks such as discounted airfare and specialty benefits at luxury hotels. Let’s take a look at how the Amex Travel portal works, whether the benefits are worthwhile and who can access Amex Travel’s website.

  • American Express Travel offers hotels, vacation rentals, flights, rental cars and cruises.
  • Luxury hotel benefits and discounted airfare are two benefits of booking through Amex’s travel portal.
  • American Express cardholders can access Amex Travel.

How to book travel through the Amex Travel portal

Booking travel through the Amex Travel portal requires you to have an online account associated with an Amex card. While you can complete a search on the Amex Travel website without logging in, you will need to do so in order to make a booking.

travel portal website

After you choose whether to book a flight, hotel, vacation rental, vacation package, rental car or cruise, you’ll need to enter your travel details.

For example, if you want to book a flight through Amex Travel, you’ll need to put in your departure airport and destination as well as your dates of travel. The site will then bring up a list of matching results.

travel portal website

You can filter based on when the flights take off as well as how many stops you’re willing to tolerate, among other options.

The Amex Travel site offers a wide variety of hotel stays and flights, but you’ll always want to double check elsewhere before booking since it doesn’t always feature every option.

Once you’ve selected a booking, you’ll be taken through the checkout process. This includes providing your personal information and can also include seat requests and adding in loyalty program numbers.

To pay for your booking, you can use your American Express Membership Rewards, if you have a card that earns them, or your American Express card or a combination of both.

After you’ve booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email containing your reservation information. You can also find your bookings under the My Trips section of Amex Travel.

travel portal website

Who can use the portal?

Any American Express cardholder can use the Amex Travel portal to book travel. But those whose cards don’t earn Amex Membership Rewards points will need to pay with their Amex card.

However, many American Express cards  earn Membership Rewards points that can be redeemed for travel through the Amex Travel portal. These cards include (terms apply):

Is the portal worth using?

The Amex Travel portal can be worth using in certain cases, though it won’t always make sense. For example, some flights aren’t bookable via Amex Travel, so if what you need isn’t available you’ll want to look elsewhere.

That being said, those with certain cards are entitled to exclusive benefits that can lower prices or allow them to redeem points for travel. There are also perks for booking luxury hotels within the portal. In these cases, Amex Travel is definitely worth investigating.

How to maximize your Amex Travel benefits through the portal

International airline program.

The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , the International Airline Program (IAP) can save you money on certain international flights booked via the Amex Travel portal.

All information about American Express Centurion Black Card has been collected independently by Blueprint.

This benefit is only available on tickets booked in premium economy, business or first class, but the savings can be significant.

For example, we looked at a round-trip flight in premium economy from San Francisco (SFO) to Tokyo (NRT). Booking with Japan Airlines (JAL) directly resulted in a cost of $4,431.40, while the Amex Travel portal and the IAP charged just $3,797.40 for a savings of over $600.

travel portal website

Fine Hotels + Resorts ® and The Hotel Collection

American Express also offers the Fine Hotels and Resorts and The Hotel Collection to eligible cardholders.

Fine Hotels and Resorts allows guests to book luxury hotels with special benefits. These include room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, an experience credit, late check-out, early check-in and more.

The Hotel Collection offers similar but less exorbitant benefits. It’s directed toward more midscale properties and includes an experience credit as well as a room upgrade.

35% rebate on redeemed points

Those who hold The Business Platinum Card from American Express are able to get a 35% rebate on points redeemed for eligible flights booked through the Amex Travel portal (up to 1,000,000 points per calendar year).

Eligible flights include all fare classes on an airline that you select each year. It also includes first and business class tickets on any airline.

Quick guide to Amex Membership Rewards

American Express Membership Rewards are the points you earn with eligible Amex cards. These highly flexible and valuable points can be redeemed in a number of ways, though they tend to be most valuable when transferred to Amex airline partners.

Other ways of redeeming Amex points include:

  • Gift cards.
  • Travel booked via Amex Travel.
  • Online shopping.
  • Statement credits.

While these are nice options to have, you’ll generally get much less value from your Membership Rewards points by redeeming them in these ways. Finally, although you can redeem your points in the Amex Travel portal, this isn’t necessarily a good idea if you aim to reap maximum value. Even if you’re taking advantage of the 35% rebate on redeemed points for flights, you’ll only ever receive a value of 1.54 cents per point. This is lower than you’d expect when transferring your Amex points to many airline and hotel partners.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

No, travel insurance is not automatically included when booking through the Amex portal. But many of the best credit cards feature complimentary travel insurance when using your card to pay, including those from American Express. Otherwise, you may be able to opt in to travel insurance during the booking process or via a third party provider.

Those with the The Platinum Card from American Express can earn 5 Membership Rewards® points per $1 for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 per calendar year, 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1 point per $1 on other purchases. The card has an annual fee of $695 ( rates & fees ).

Those with the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express * The information for the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , meanwhile, earn 5 Membership Rewards® points per $1 on flights and prepaid hotels through American Express Travel, 1.5 points per $1 at U.S. construction material & hardware suppliers, electronic goods retailers and software and cloud system providers, shipping providers, and purchases of $5,000 or more on up to $2 million per calendar year and 1 point per $1 on other eligible purchases. The card has a $695 annual fee.

All information about The Business Platinum Card® from American Express has been collected independently by Blueprint.

The phone number for American Express Travel is: 1-800-297-2977.

The number of Amex points that you’ll need to redeem for a flight will depend on the cash cost of your flight and whether you’re booking through Amex Travel or transferring your Membership Rewards points to an Amex airline partner. Amex Points are worth about one cent when booking flights through the portal, so a flight that costs $500 in cash would require about 50,000 Amex points. Credit Card Travel Portals: A Quick Guide

T he number of travel booking websites you can choose from is astonishing: Priceline, Expedia, Kayak.com plus a hundred others. With so many choices, adding a credit card travel portal to the mix might feel unnecessary. But don't be so quick to dismiss them. Credit card booking engines can be convenient and easy to use. Plus, they offer a distinct advantage: Your bookings automatically integrate into your existing rewards program.

What Are Credit Card Travel Portals?

Credit card travel portals are online booking platforms managed by your credit card issuer. To access the booking engine, you'll need to hold an eligible credit card through that issuer and may need to login before beginning (or finalizing) your reservation.

For the most part, credit card travel portals work exactly the same way as other booking platforms you may have used in the past. The search interfaces are intuitive, with comprehensive results and clear pricing. The main difference between your card's booking engine and a generic online travel agency is that you typically have the option to pay with your card, rewards or a combination of both.

Why You Should Book Through Credit Card Travel Portals

Earning points.

Several cards offer additional points per dollar on bookings made through their travel portal and charged to your credit card. In some cases, this can add up to huge earnings. For example, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earns . That means hotel and car rental reservations made through their platform outearn reservations made elsewhere by a huge margin.

This is far from the only card offering considerable rewards for qualifying bookings. Check your specific card details to see if booking through their card portals has an incentive for doing so.

Redeeming Points

The ability to pay with points is a major convenience for cardholders. You can skip the step to transfer points to frequent flier or hotel reward programs "and the black-out dates or inventory constraints that often come with award bookings. You can skip the step to convert points to cash back, too. Simply select the option to pay with points in full or in part at check-out.

Best of all, some cards offer an increased value per point when using points to book travel through their portal rather than redeeming them toward cash. This is true of many Chase Ultimate Rewards® cards. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card both provide 25% more value (1.25 cents per point) when redeeming rewards to book travel through their portal. Other cards may also offer premiums toward travel redemptions.

Travel Credits

On select cards, you might have an even richer reason to use a credit card booking portal: Statement credits that essentially reimburse you for your purchase. For instance, with The Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply) you can earn up to $200 in statement credits when you prepay for a qualifying hotel reservation through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection via AmexTravel.com.

Some cards offer discounts instead of statement credits when booking through a travel portal. The Citi Premier® Card includes a one-time $100 savings on hotel bookings of $500 or more made through the Citi ThankYou travel portal.

Pitfalls of Using Credit Card Booking Engines

While travel portals have their benefits, they come with downsides, too. For one thing, any reservations you make via your card's travel portal will be treated as a third-party reservation, just like bookings made through other online travel agencies.

When it comes to hotel stays, third-party bookings are almost always ineligible to participate in branded loyalty programs such as Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors . You won't earn hotel points on your stay"instead you may earn credit card points"and you won't earn stay credits toward elite status. You also won't receive elite benefits. For independent properties (or hotel programs you aren't a member of), this might not be a consideration.

Another limitation of third-party bookings is that you often can't work directly with the airline or hotel to make changes or cancellations to your reservation. Instead, you'll contact the credit card travel agency to make these changes. When you have unexpected issues with your travel, such as a canceled flight due to weather, this can put you at a disadvantage. There may be delays in processing your change or they may not have as many options available to you.

Lastly, keep an eye on prices before booking through your credit card travel portal. Sometimes, the cost of a hotel stay, flight or car rental may be identical to booking directly with your provider. Other times, booking through a portal may have an upcharge or disqualify you from member discounts

Popular Credit Card Booking Engines

American express.

Book: Flights, hotels, air + hotel packages, car rentals, cruises

The value of Amex Travel varies based on precisely which American Express credit cards you hold. While many of them give you the option to earn and redeem Membership Rewards when using the travel portal, some cards also provide access to additional benefits.

There are two main things that stand out in the Amex Travel booking engine. First, if you're logged into your Gold or Platinum card account, you'll notice you have access to properties designated as part of The Hotel Collection or Fine Hotels + Resorts . These bookings offer on-property credits or elite-like benefits during your stay, with perks like early check-in, room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

Second, you might be eligible for discounts on some flights. When searching for airfare on Amex Travel, some results may be labeled as Insider Fares"you'll get a discount when paying entirely with points. Additionally, different versions of the Amex Platinum card include additional flight discounts. The International Airlines Program offers discounts on premium fares for select flights and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply) rebates up to 35% of a flight's price in points on qualifying airfare booked and paid for with Membership Rewards.

Capital One

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars

Capital One's travel booking platform keeps things simple, with rewards worth a flat 1 cent per point when used toward travel. While that's nothing special, the portal is anything but boring.

Capital One Travel integrates tools to help you find the lowest flight price right into its engine. When searching, you'll see color-coded calendars designating cheaper days in case you're flexible. Furthermore, when you click through to a specific flight result, the portal suggests whether or not it's a good time to book, thanks to prediction algorithms provided by their partner Hopper.

Hotel reservations don't have the same integrations, but Capital One Travel does offer a Premier Collection of specially-designated luxury properties that include complimentary breakfast, complimentary WiFi and a $100 experience credit for on-site charges such as spa treatments or dining. These bonus perks can add tremendous value to your stay. However, the selection of participating hotels is limited and many destinations don't have properties with these perks.

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and activities

The Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal is the most comprehensive credit card booking platform, with the ability to book tours and other activities worldwide in addition to making more standard travel reservations. Not only does this give you more opportunities to earn or redeem rewards, but it also makes it a one-stop shop where you can book (and track) all your plans.

Beyond that, though, Chase keeps things simple without all the bells and whistles. They don't have splashy features or impressive discounts. Instead, the Chase travel portal focuses on displaying broad results with clear pricing. The differences between multiple airfare options are clearly displayed, as are different hotel room types and booking options.

In short, the Chase booking engine delivers an easy user experience but most of its users are probably there to earn or redeem points or use a travel credit included with their card.

One exception is for travelers booking Chase Luxury Hotels & Resorts , which is a feature only available to Chase cardholders of specific cards. These properties, like Amex's Fine Hotels + Resorts or Capital One's Premier Collection, include extra benefits with your stay. Property benefits and credits vary by hotel so check the listing carefully before booking.

Book: Flights, hotels, rental cars and activities

After years of an underwhelming and restricted user interface, the Citi travel portal has finally been upgraded to a usable booking experience. Its minimalist booking experience keeps things focused and easy to learn, offering search functions and filters that can help travelers find what they need quickly.

Though the website is much easier to use now, there are still a handful of limitations travelers will want to be aware of. When booking hotels, the portal defaults to nonrefundable bookings, which might be a dealbreaker for some travelers. In fact, a sample search in Munich only offered 94 properties with optionally refundable rates out of 136 hotels"making the incentives included on select Citi cards a whole lot less valuable.

One other constraint to the Citi portal is that you aren't able to book multi-city flights. In some cases, you might be able to work around this by booking two one-way tickets. However, as experienced travelers know, it can often be cheaper to book an open-jaw or multi-city itinerary than booking separate segments, especially when traveling internationally.

Despite these hurdles, there's still value in booking through the Citi portal, especially if your card includes discounts or bonus rewards for doing so. When completing your reservation, cardmembers can choose between paying with points, cash or a mixture of both.

Bottom Line

Credit card travel portals fill an important need for reward travelers: you can often book flights or hotels that would be unavailable through branded loyalty programs. Cardholders can also earn points at elevated rates, potentially outperforming what you could find through other booking avenues. However, not all card booking engines are created equal and there can be downsides to using them. As with all travel, compare your options to find what works best for you.

Find the best credit card for you

How to use the chase travel portal, you can use chase points to book flights, hotels, car rentals and more through its travel portal..

thumbnail

With the right amount of planning, it's possible to book your entire vacation, including flights , hotels , cruises , car rentals , tours and other activities, entirely on points through the Chase travel portal.

But are you getting the best deal by doing this instead of transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to travel partners and booking directly? It turns out there's a lot more to consider — everything from travel date flexibility and brand variety to the credit card you're using — if you want to get more value for your points by booking through Chase Travel SM .

Below, CNBC Select breaks down the best ways to book flights, hotels, cruises, tours and vacation activities through the Chase travel portal with Ultimate Rewards® points.

How to use the Chase travel portal

  • How to earn and redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points

How to get started with the Chase travel portal

How to book flights through the chase travel portal, how to book rental cars, cruises, and other travel activities, bottom line, how to earn and redeem chase ultimate rewards® points.

To access Chase Travel SM , you'll need to have a credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Chase Sapphire Reserve® , Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card , Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card , Ink Business Cash® Credit Card , Chase Freedom Unlimited® or Chase Freedom Flex℠ .

The easiest way to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points quickly is by taking advantage of the lucrative welcome bonuses offered by certain rewards cards:

  • You'll earn 60,000 points by signing up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and spending $4,000 within the first three months of opening your account.
  • With the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card 's welcome bonus, you'll earn 100k bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $1,000 cash back or $1,250 toward travel when redeemed through Chase Travel SM.
  • The Chase Sapphire Reserve 's welcome bonus gives you 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

The card you're using to redeem UR points will also affect your point redemption value . For instance, if you're using the Chase Sapphire Preferred to book through the Chase Travel SM portal, points are worth 25% more (1.25 cents per point). But if you're booking through Chase Travel℠ with the Chase Sapphire Reserve , points are worth 50% more (1.5 cents per point) — the other $0 annual fee Chase cards each carry a redemption rate of 1 cent per point.

That means the bonus points you'd earn from either the Chase Sapphire Preferred's welcome bonus is worth $750 towards travel and the Chase Sapphire Reserve's is worth $900 towards travel.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

To reach the Chase travel portal, log into your Chase account, then click the area near the right side of the screen where it says the amount of your Chase UR points. Depending on how many Chase credit cards you have, you may be asked to choose which one you want to proceed with.

The next screen is your credit card's main dashboard, showing how many UR points you currently have, as well as any deals or bonus opportunities. On the top of the page, you'll see several menus with redemption options.

While not the best redemption in terms of overall value, you could choose to use your Chase points for Apple and Amazon purchases, cash them in for gift cards and experiences, or reimburse yourself for certain recent charges through Chase's Pay Yourself Back tool . This is also where you can transfer points directly to one of Chase's 14 travel partners if you have a specific flight or hotel in mind. Otherwise, click "book travel" to enter the Chase travel portal.

From here, you'll be able to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, activities and cruises. Simply choose your category, plug in your desired dates and details, and book with points, cash or some combination of the two.

There are a few pros and cons to consider when booking flights through the Chase travel portal. You won't have to worry about blackout dates or limited award availability, which makes it great if you're not flexible with dates and flight times. Just make sure you compare the number of points needed through the Chase travel portal with how many points the airline would require if you were using its own miles, especially if you're hunting for a good deal on economy seats.

The catch with using the Chase travel portal is you won't be able to shop for tickets on low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, or Allegiant Air — you can search for flights on Alaska, Southwest, Delta, JetBlue, American, and United. You'll also be able to book flights on most international carriers.

Remember that you can still earn miles and elite credits on flights, as tickets booked through the Chase travel portal are categorized as "paid" rather than as an award flight since you're "paying" for them with points instead of cash. Consider the taxes and fees you might have to pay if you were to transfer the points straight to one of Chase's travel partners versus booking directly through the portal, and to calculate and compare how many points and miles you'd earn by booking with either method.

You'll be able to search, filter, and sort by price, airline, booking class, departure time, arrival time, and departure airport. For this example, below, consider a round-trip flight from Seattle to Austin with sample dates of Feb. 1–7, 2024, booked through the travel portal with a Chase Sapphire Preferred card (redemptions are worth 1.25 cents per point):

Results included 107 results with an economy mix-and-match United and Delta fare for $370 or about 29,600 points being the most affordable option. For comparison's sake, the points price is about the same as what United and Delta are currently charging if you were to book the awards directly through the airlines, but Delta isn't a transfer partner of Chase. You also won't earn miles if you were to book these awards through the airlines, whereas you will earn miles when booking through Chase.

To finish booking your flight through the travel portal, select your route(s), review the details, choose how many points you'd like to use and complete your purchase.

How to book hotels through the Chase travel portal

While the best redemption rates are usually realized when you transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to hotel partner World of Hyatt, if you're not a huge fan of chain hotels or prefer boutiques or brands like Hilton, Choice Hotels, or Wyndham, it can be a good idea to book them through the travel portal.

As with flights, you won't have to worry about blackout dates or limited award night availability. However, keep in mind that hotels treat the Chase travel portal as a third-party booking agency, so you won't be able to earn hotel points on stays as you might by booking your stay directly with the hotel.

Hyatt hotels usually offer better deals when you book directly, and since it's one of Chase's hotel partners, you can transfer UR points instantly at a 1:1 ratio. Marriott and IHG are usually more varied, so you may score a better deal by booking via the Chase travel portal instead of transferring points over. For this reason, it's a good idea to ring up how much your hotel stay would cost in points through the portal as well as the hotel's website.

Start by searching by destination so you can see a list of all the available hotels. For this example, let's try looking for hotels in Downtown Austin from Feb. 1–7, 2024. Once the results appear, you'll be able to narrow down your search with filters based on price, star ratings, guest ratings, amenities and neighborhood.

Let's go over a couple of options within the Chase travel portal, each booked with a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card. One option is the Four Seasons Hotel Austin, which is listed for $556 or about 44,500 points per night through Chase. If you book through Four Seasons, directly, you'll pay $561 per night. The hotel chain also doesn't have a rewards program but going through Chase provides a way to pay with points.

Another example is the Hyatt Place Austin Downtown for $288 or about 23,000 points per night through Chase. If you were to book this directly through Hyatt, you'd pay $279 per night as a member of its loyalty program or just 15,000 World of Hyatt points per night if you booked with points. Since you can transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio, in this case, transferring would make more sense.

As you can see, it's worth comparing points required by the travel portal and each hotel's website, as the time of year, location, and other factors may play a part in pricing. To book your stay through the travel portal, select your room type, review the details, choose how many points you'd like to use and complete your purchase.

It's a pretty similar process if you want to book rental cars, tours and other travel activities through the Chase travel portal. Cruises can also be booked as well, but you'll need to call.

As far as car rentals, make sure you're booking through the travel portal with points that are connected to Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve to take advantage of extra perks like primary rental car insurance — you'll also need to decline the rental car company's auto collision damage waiver when you book to activate this. You'll want to charge at least a few dollars to the card and not use points to cover the entire booking which ensures that you're still "paying" for the car rental with your Sapphire card, which means you'll be entitled to the card's rental car insurance.

Beyond that, simply plug in your itinerary and search. Here's an example for a rental in Austin from February 1–7, 2024, booked with a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card:

You'll be able to filter your search by capacity, car type, price per day, company, and car options (like air conditioning and automatic transmission). For a seven-day rental, it would cost around 24,800 points or $310 for the cheapest option. As with other travel portal purchases, you'll be able to enter how many Chase Ultimate Rewards points you wish to put toward the final price. It works the same way for booking tours and other travel activities, so you could potentially enjoy a free — or nearly free — vacation solely on Chase points if you were to plan it all out properly.

Booking through the Chase travel portal can be a great use of your Ultimate Rewards® points, but make sure to compare the rates against booking directly with an airline or hotel itself. Finally, consider transferring your points to one of Chase's travel partners, especially if you're looking to book a luxury hotel or flight in business class.

Complicated rewards

For travelers, the $95 -annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card stands out as a versatile and valuable choice.

With this card, you can earn rewards — known as Ultimate Rewards® points — in a variety of ways and redeem them strategically for travel, like transferring those points to a variety of loyalty programs, including heavy hitters such as United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Marriott and Hyatt. And it dovetails nicely with some other Chase cards that also earn Ultimate Rewards® points.

Overall, it might not be the easiest card to use — a Swiss Army knife compared with the butter knife that simpler cards are. But it’s a go-to card for travelers who delight in finding ways to reap big value from their rewards.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Basics

Card type: Travel .

Through March 2025: 5 points per $1 spent on eligible Peloton purchases (with a maximum earning of 25,000 points) and on Lyft.

» MORE: Benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

How much is a point worth?

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points earned on this card are worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed for travel booked through Chase. Using points this way, or transferring them to travel partners, is key to getting the most value from the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . Otherwise, it’s not quite as lucrative to use points for less-valuable redemption options, including cash back, gift cards and merchandise.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers versatility for travelers that's hard to find at a similar price point.

Solid sign-up bonus

The card features a generous sign-up bonus: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

Bonus rewards i n multiple categories

You earn extra points in a bunch of spending categories, which is good, but also makes it complicated:

Through March 2025: 5 points per $1 spent on Lyft.

Triple points on dining and streaming services is useful, while online grocery purchases may or may not be, depending on your lifestyle. Travel-related purchases are far more lucrative if you’re willing to book through Chase's travel portal. Even if you’re not, Chase’s definition of "travel" is fortunately broad; in addition to airfare and hotel stays, you can also earn bonus rewards on expenses like parking garage fees, bus fares and campgrounds. And these bonus rewards aren’t just available for travel and dining in the U.S., they can be earned worldwide.

Those earnings rates are, in effect, slightly higher because of the 10% anniversary bonus boost. For example, streaming services rewards effectively have a rewards rate of 3.1%. (The anniversary bonus applies to dollars spent, not points earned.)

And if you’re willing to use points to book travel through the Chase portal, your points will get a 25% boost (points are worth 1.25 cents). All told, a dollar spent at a restaurant or for a streaming service, for example, would earn a total value of 3.75 cents when used for travel through Chase.

This card’s valuable 1:1 transfer partners make it a keeper, especially if you're willing to look for good redemption opportunities. Say you spot a nice deal with one of Chase’s airline transfer partners — maybe a flight that normally costs thousands of dollars going for a mere 50,000 miles plus taxes and fees. With this card, you have the ability to transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points into that airline’s loyalty program and pounce on that deal.

Here are the transfer partners:

Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).

Air Canada (1:1 ratio).

Air France-KLM (1:1 ratio).

British Airways (1:1 ratio).

Emirates (1:1 ratio).

Iberia (1:1 ratio).

JetBlue (1:1 ratio).

Singapore (1:1 ratio).

Southwest (1:1 ratio).

United (1:1 ratio).

Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Hyatt (1:1 ratio).

InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).

Marriott (1:1 ratio).

Complementary cards

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is an excellent companion to other cards in the Chase Ultimate Rewards® family. That’s because you can move points to this card from your other cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards®, potentially opening up more redemption options.

Consider the Chase Freedom Flex℠ . It earns 5% cash back on rotating quarterly categories (on up to the first $1,500 in purchases, upon activation) in addition to rewards for other spending. You could potentially move the rewards you earn on that card to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . From there, you could get more value out of your points by transferring points at a 1:1 ratio to other loyalty programs or redeeming them for 1.25 cents apiece when booking travel through Chase. (See our comparison article on Flex versus Sapphire Preferred .)

» MORE: What is the ‘Chase Trifecta’?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and its more upscale sibling, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , have had their rewards, perks and bonuses tweaked over the years as the issuer has worked to keep them at the top of travelers' wallets. See our Chase Sapphire cards news page for a rundown.

Sapphire Preferred vs. Sapphire Reserve

If you have your eye on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , you might also be checking out the pricier Chase Sapphire Reserve® . A premium travel card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® comes with an annual fee of $550 and several rich perks and benefits, including airline lounge access and an annual $300 travel credit. If you travel enough, going for the more expensive option could be well worth the cost.

Read NerdWallet’s full comparison of these two cards to learn more about the differences.

Here’s a look at how the cards stack up on major features:

It's complicated

All those reward categories with different rates, an anniversary bonus and a 1.25 cents per point redemption for travel through Chase? Dizzying.

Additionally, the best rewards and redemptions are tightly tied to using the Chase portal to book travel or to transferring points to a different loyalty program, which is more to figure out. And to really boost your points, many people will use the card in conjunction with other Chase cards.

In the end, making the most of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card requires a learning curve and an ongoing juggling act that some consumers simply don’t want to deal with. If you're interested in earning travel rewards, but want something a little easier to use, the $95 -annual-fee Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a much simpler rewards structure.

You'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel. Other purchases earn 2 miles per dollar. But like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , there's multiple ways to redeem rewards with this card, including transferring them to travel partners. If you want something even more straightforward, consider a cash-back credit card .

Few premium perks

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is an excellent card for travelers in general. It even has a few travel perks, such as primary rental car insurance , trip cancellation/interruption insurance and lost luggage insurance.

But for those who love to travel in style, the more expensive Chase Sapphire Reserve® could be a better fit.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® with an annual fee of $550 comes with an annual $300 travel credit and Priority Pass Select access, which gets you into several airport lounges for free and includes meal credits for certain airport eateries. And it comes with a credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry (or NEXUS), worth up to $100 once every four years.

To see how these cards compare to the competition, check out NerdWallet's list of best credit cards to get .

Using the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for simple rewards — say, earning cash back — would be akin to buying a top-of-the-line multipurpose tool just to use the nail file. The card offers outstanding value, but to fully appreciate it, a traveler needs to take advantage of its versatility. If that appeals to you, this card is an excellent choice.

alt

With no annual fee, this card gives you 1.5 miles for every $1 you spend. It comes with a new-cardmember bonus offer, and points are redeemable for statement credit against many kinds of travel expenses.

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Frequently asked questions

Rewards are: 5 points per $1 spent on all travel booked through Chase, 3 points per $1 spent on dining (including eligible delivery services and takeout), 3 points per $1 spent on select streaming services, 3 points per $1 spent on online grocery purchases (not including Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 spent on travel not booked through Chase and 1 point per $1 spent on other purchases. Occasionally, the issuer may offer bonus rewards in specific categories for a limited time.

That depends on how you redeem them. If you use them to book travel through Chase — such as for airfare, hotels, rental cars or cruises — points are worth 1.25 cents each. If you redeem them for cash, they’ll be worth 1 cent apiece. You can also transfer points to about a dozen airline and hotel loyalty programs; the value you get depends on how you redeem them in those programs.

As long as your account is open, your points won’t expire. There’s no limit to the number of points you can earn.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a much higher annual fee — $550 , compared with $95 for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card — but it offers richer rewards and more perks. Points are worth 1.5 cents apiece when redeemed for travel through Chase (versus 1.25 cents for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). Perks include an annual $300 travel credit that offsets a big slice of the annual fee. See our comparison article for more details.

If you have good to excellent credit and you’re in line with Chase’s 5/24 rule , you could be approved for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . Good credit is generally defined as a FICO of 690 or higher, although issuers also take into account your income, existing debts and other information.
