Interview: Mary Wiseman On Doing Some “Classic Star Trek” In ‘Discovery,’ And Tilly’s Future

Gonna miss Tilly and Jett.

I bet that it ends with the former foes joining forces to battle a stronger enemy — the Breen.

I’m loving Reno’s little lab setup there and I’m liking that vest on Doctor Culber.

Nhan and Reno! Excellent. I’m glad the writers finally remembered there are characters besides Burnham and Book.

Oh yeah the Breen is involved and Nhan is back!!! I can’t wait now!

Enjoyed the last episode, but I feel Discovery was catching its breath and now we’re gonna GO! Really looking forward to this one.

Although the last few episodes haven’t really excited me I did listen to TM last podcast and Anthony sounded very excited about this one and said big things happens in it so really looking forward to it now!

Can’t wait to see the Breen in action as well!

Definitely need more Jett Reno before the season’s done.

YES!! Tig is so cool and her character is a winner every time she’s on screen.

Cool. Another Bottle-Show.

Reno heavy episode? Can’t wait

It’s interesting what Kurtzman said about Michelle Paradis being the showrunner. He mentioned how meticulous she is. It shows, and it hurts this season. She delegated all sorts of individual tasks to the writers. One writes one scene, and somebody else writes another one. It’s why some of the eps feel so disjointed. If I had to guess, her skill at being meticulous was to produce the episodes within or below the budget. Some of the things Kurtzman talked about regarding Trek’s need to be authentic. Firstly, I’m a fan of DSC. Authenticity has been S5s biggest problem. There is too much focus on Moll and Laak and not enough on the DSC crew.

Do you have specific quotes from people to back this up? If not, that is a lot of supposition about how she works and the writer’s room operates.

I have to agree there and I think Paradise generally sicks as a showrunner.

I don’t disagree with some of his overall points about the season itself but we have no idea how the season was written out.

Craig, the store manager, is an absolutely awesome human. There was a bit of a mix up with my bike order, so he personally drove to another store location to get the bike I ordered. He also spent a solid 10 minutes after the store closed to help my husband settle my bike into the back of our truck. If you need a bike, make sure to chat with Craig when you're in the store because I'm certain you will leave excited for your next ride.

I needed some tuneup work on two bikes. The sales guy was knowledgeable and quite helpful. I also had a new pet basket and rack installed. Both bikes were ready early the next day. The sales guy also helped me with questions about ebikes; again knowledgeable and took time to help. No pressure sales tactics. Definitely my go-to shop for bikes and bike repairs.

Just about everyone I've been in contact with has been fairly helpful and professional. Not a huge selection of bikes at this location but they will certainly help find the right ride from their inventory. If looking to purchase, do your homework and research their brands before you go in as they are not necessarily competitively priced on all models and accessories. The guys in the shop are heavily involved in promoting cycling in the community. This store hosts a weekly road ride on saturday mornings wheels down at 7:30 am which great for experienced and noobies.

A special thanks to Kevin, Craig, Scott, Gio & Jason!!! If I was competing in the Tour de France this would be my team. I purchased a Specialized there 7/2020. It needed a bit of servicing since then. Admittedly I weigh more than I'd like to and I ride hard but that's where the beauty of these gentlemen come in. They are all passionate cyclists with an obvious love for the sport and great respect for anyone else who cycles (no matter how much they weigh, lol) They take it as a personal challenge and mission to solve whatever problem comes between you your bike and the ability to truly enjoy your ride. The only thing they don't like and actually seem upset about is the time you will be off the road. Anyway long story long, these guys went above and beyond to make sure I was properly taking care of and that my bike is performing as it should or even better. And even if you're a big shot Tour de Francer don't frown upon the bike barn and get ripped off at some specialty shop. These guys know what they're doing and want to see you happy!!!! Much love!

Photo of Andrea B.

First using a bike shop, but had a flat while out riding my bike at the park. Google to find a shop on my way home. Found Bike Barn, everyone was nice and helpful. Left my bike, they called couple days later it was ready. Spoke with a couple sales people regarding new bike, they explain the advanages and disadvanages. Please with the professionalism of the staff will be back soon to purchase. Picked my bike up ready to go!! A new customer satified.

Photo of Roger R.

Every time I take my bicycle for service it is done quickly and every step is explained. I have not bought a bicycle here, but I am more inclined to doing so! There serve is up-pare compared to others. I travel from Houston to Atascocita just for their outstanding service.

I had two LBS options in mind for a fitting. One said, call the day of and see if we're busy and BB was able to set an appointment. I'm a planner so their Tuesday & Thursday options worked best for me. My road bike and I met with Scott on a Thursday. Friendly and knowledgeable- his first question was "What's your goal" ... I appreciated the concern for my needs. I want to go faster and rack up for miles. He took measurements and made adjustments to saddle and handle bars all while giving explanations and providing feedback while watching me on the trainer. A man helping a woman with saddle adjustments must be awkward - but he asked the right questions and I was comfortable sharing my pain points. All and all a good visit and I can't wait to ride this evening. He gave me things to consider to increase efficiency (pedals & shoes) which I will keep in mind if these adjustments yields the results he was certain of. Every rider is different so take the time and invest in yourself & your ride. Money well spent.

Photo of Makayla P.

Great staff and very knowledgeable. Try to come during the off season (not summer) to buy a bike for a wider selection. Fall is when they get in new season orders. If you want to try out a bike to ride there is a giant parking lot in the back with plenty of space. Wear something comfortable to ride. Don't be afraid to test different bikes out. I originally thought I wanted a hybrid but actually worked out better getting a road bike. Any accessories can be found other places but I'm not sure if it'll be cheaper. Their helmet selection is extremely limited. Other than that great store.

Photo of Jeremy J.

Was here just now to purchase 4 bikes probably worth 4K in value. Five sales reps stood in the back eating. No one came out to greet my son and I after about 10 minutes waiting. Sorry want be back

Photo of Pokemon Y.

I was needing some bike accessories for an adult bike and some training wheels plus a kiddie bell for a kiddie bike. There were 3 employees when I walked in on a Thursday afternoon, none of whom even acknowledged I was there. Nobody asked if I needed assistance. Nobody said hello or smiled. I walked around the small shop, searching for the accessories I needed, but I didn't find what I needed. I might have bought something if an employee had tried to assist me. DO NOT GO HERE FOR CHILD BIKE ACCESSORIES. They had zero. I stopped by Target next, which had everything. I love to support small businesses, but I will not be back to this place. To the store owner: A little "Hi there, welcome to our store!" goes a long way and only takes 2 seconds of your time.

The Latz Report

Melbourne, Victoria

One of Victoria’s largest bike store chains, Cycles Galleria, has been purchased by Trek Bicycle Australia this month.

The purchase, including all seven Cycles Galleria stores, is the latest of two purchases by Trek in recent weeks to bolster the company’s presence in Melbourne.

In late February, Trek bought Essendon store Rapido Cycles.

In a statement, Trek says “The Rapido purchase was driven by a combination of factors, including helping a long-time customer with an exit strategy and allowing us to cement our share in Melbourne’s northern suburbs”.

Rapido had been a Trek dealer for two decades and will be rebranded as Trek Essendon.

“The purchase of Rapido aligns to our retail strategy of having committed and competent retailers in every market and helping our long-time customers with exit strategies if they want to retire or leave the industry,” the statement says.

“We are lucky to have a well-established network of independent customers that we see will continue to help us with our retail strategy growth as well.”

Trek says all Rapido staff were given the opportunity to remain with the business.

“Their skills and experience are key to delivering the Trek brand experience,” according to the statement.

Trek now owns 39 stores in Australia and has bolstered its head office team to support Trek stores and the company’s independent retailers.

Cycles Galleria includes two stores in the Melbourne CBD, additional inner-city locations in Brunswick and Docklands and suburban stores in Ringwood, Camberwell and Williamstown.

Wilcox Bikes Closing

News also emerged this week of the closure of Wilcox Bikes, in the Queensland city of Maryborough.

Wilcox Bikes has been servicing the Fraser Coast community for more than 40 years and was purchased by Fraser Coast Family Networks, a not-for-profit disability organisation supporting people with disability.

The store has announced it will hold a closing down sale from 4 th – 10 th April to clear stock.

“17,000 cars go by this place a day, that is one every five seconds,” he said, while sitting at a high-top table in the business he recently purchased.

Van Allen opened for customers late last month, but he is still in the midst of remodeling the space and creating a menu.

He is on a mission to make the spot “much more inviting” than it had been over the last few years.

He and his crew of local help have been busy painting, laying new floors, redoing the bathrooms and hanging flat screens. They also removed booths that blocked windows to let the sun shine in.

Van Allen said he wants to make it “a place where my nieces and nephews can come to eat,” and people can watch football on Sundays.

He said many longtime Ringwood residents told him they remember going to the Old Forge years ago for drinks and food after softball games, basketball games and local meetings.

“I want to bring that back,” he said.

He also wants to bring in “grab-and-go” food – like lasagna, meatballs and sausage and peppers – that people can pick up on their commutes home.

Van Allen, who grew up in Franklin Lakes and for years has called Erskine Lakes home, spent his high school and college years working at the Market Basket in Franklin Lakes – where he learned about catering and food service on the job.

“I am in my element here,” he said. “You will see me behind the register. Behind the bar. Sweeping up.”

He plans to have the pub fully revamped in time for what should prove to be one of his busiest days of the year: St. Patrick’s Day.

The business is located at 139 Skyline Drive in Ringwood. To visit its Facebook page, click HERE .
