8th Grade DC Trip

A capstone middle school experience since the 1980s.

The 8th Grade trip to Washington DC has been a time honored Greenwich Public Schools tradition for over 4 decades .  When COVID threatened its continuation in 2022, a group of parents teamed up with the Greenwich Alliance for Education as well as the PTAs, principals and teachers of Central, Eastern, and Western Middle Schools to form the 8th Grade DC Trip Fundraising Committee.

The mission of the DC Trip Fundraising Committee is to ensure that all 8th graders can go on the trip regardless of financial need and that students at every middle school have the same experience.   The 8th Grade DC Trip Committee is now part of the Greenwich Alliance for Education and is actively fundraising throughout the year.

Washington, D.C. Trip

Bringing education to life.

For over 12 years La Causa Charter School has been part of a nationwide educational experience and we’re excited to keep the tradition going. The 8th-grade trip to Washington, D.C. offers a remarkable opportunity for students to bridge classroom learning with real-world events. For some students, it represents a chance at a life-changing experience, for many of our students this is their first travel experience outside of Wisconsin. This trip provides a tangible connection to American history, government, and culture by visiting iconic landmarks, memorials, and institutions. Beyond that, it’s a shared experience that unites 8th graders from across the country, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our nation’s heritage while creating lasting memories and connections with peers.

You can create the experience of a lifetime!

Come along on an amazing trip with La Causa Charter School’s 8th-grade students as they explore Washington D.C. This special journey is made possible thanks to support from parents and our community. Students will have fun while learning about science and technology at cool places like the NASA Goddard Visitor Center and the National Cryptologic Museum. The trip isn’t just about visiting places – it’s about discovering history and culture at famous spots like the United States Capitol and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Teachers will guide students and help them see the world in a bigger way, giving them skills they’ll need for the future. At La Causa Charter School, we believe in making learning fun and exciting for all our students.

Educational Experiences Have Included:

  • Arlington National Cemetery

  • Smithsonian National Zoological Park
  • Supreme Court
  • United States Capitol Building
  • United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

  • World War II Memorial
Overall, I really enjoyed the trip. The college we visited was amazing. The campus was so big it had everything you could imagine. The Holocaust Museum made me sad, but I learned a lot. We also saw the memorial of WWl and WW2, The NASA Cryptologic Museum was cool, and the Library of Congress with the tomb of the lost soldiers was also cool. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun. This was the first time traveling without my family, but it was amazing. I was grateful that I was able to go.
I learned a lot when I went to Washington, D.C. I never knew how much it really meant to people until I went to Washington… The trip was a valuable experience. I am glad I got to go. It was a good place to go to learn about the American history. I encourage 8th graders who can go to take the chance.
On our Washington, D.C. trip, I enjoyed going to the Cryptologic Museum. We learned how to decode sentences. We had some activities that were fun. The people there were so nice, I hope that next year’s students get to meet them! We got to do a scavenger hunt where we learned at the same time! It was so fun to be able to walk around the museum to find the information. I wish we could’ve gone again.
I also learned how to write different coded messages. One of my favorite places we went to was the Capitol building. We got a tour of the building, and I enjoyed looking at all the different art and learning about how it was made and why.
The NASA Goddard Visitor Center is my favorite place to be in the trip because the space and the solar system is my favorite topic. I enjoy the fact that there was an area where you can create your own planet and locate it how long the distance it would be from earth and what type of planet it is.
On our Washington DC trip, I enjoyed everything. The whole trip was filled with amazing information. The memorials, tours, and museums were so educational, ana I learned a lot. One of my favorite museums was the Holocaust Museum. One thing I remember seeing (we saw so much that I can only remember so much) was all the shoes of the victims. They were dirty and ripped and seeing that in real life is so different than hearing about it. For this I am very thankful I was able to go on this trip.
My favorite place we went to was the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It had a lot of interesting facts about what happened during the Holocaust and how sad it was. Seeing the different exhibits and floors that showed the chronological events that happened helped my understanding of the Holocaust. I also liked the fact that we got a passport with facts about a person who lived during it.

Himes Visit to Western Brings Civics Lesson to Life, Inspires 8th Grade DC Trip

By: greenwichfreepress | january 4, 2024.

On Wednesday US Congressman Jim Himes, who represents Greenwich as part of Connecticut’s 4th district, visited Olivia Traina’s social studies class at Western Middle School where students are enjoying a unit on civics and looking forward too their 8th grade trip to Washington, DC in May.

Himes heard about the 8th Grade DC Trip Fundraising Committee and wanted to help by making a donation as well as visiting and inspiring students. The trip returned after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, but the need for scholarships has increased.

The committee is a group of parents from all three middle schools who want to make sure 8th graders can go on the trip regardless of financial need.

Dancing for DC

Toward that end, they are organizing a live music fundraiser called “Dancing for DC” on January 19 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Old Greenwich Social Club.

You can purchase tickets by visiting https://greenwichalliance.org/ogsc .

On Wednesday, Himes was joined by WMS principal Dr. PJ Wax and Greenwich Schools superintendent Dr. Toni Jones, as well as Donna Rosato and Janet McMahon from the fundraising committee, and PTA president at WMS, Beth Acerbo.

Ms McMahon explained that donations for the 8th grade trip run through the auspices of the Greenwich Alliance for Education, and that the three middle school principals had all agreed it was important for all students to have access to the same educational experience. The annual fundraising need is about $60,000.

The fee for the three-day/two night trip is $809. This year the trip starts on May 21.

Himes said his own two daughters had attended Central Middle School, and both enjoyed the DC trip themselves.

Himes Visit to Ms Traina’s Social Studies Class Congressman Himes shared his own path to Washington, DC and answered some tough, timely questions from students about Israel’s war on Gaza.

One student asked about potential impacts on Americans if the country gets involved in the war.

“I plan to work really hard to make sure that it gets smaller and hopefully gets resolved,” he said. “And, wars are enormously expensive. There are a lot of reasons we have to work really hard to bring peace to this conflict and avoid them in the future.”

Asked about how much funding was going to Israel, Himes said there was a proposal to send about $10 billion to Israel and about $60 billion to Ukraine.

“It is a lot of money, but by the standards of the annual expenditure of the government, it is a tiny amount of money,” he said. “On our national security – Pentagon, CIA, NSA – we spend about $800 billion a year, so add those two numbers – $60 for Ukraine for $70 for Israel – it is not even 10% of what we spend every year on our own security.”

As for his path to Congress where he is serving his eighth term and unlike most of his colleagues who are attorneys, he spent 10 years in banking, which led to his spot on the Financial Services Committee. He is also the lead Democrat on the Intelligence Committee.

He noted that to be a member of the House of Representatives, a candidate must be at least 25 though a college degree was not required.

(A candidate must also be a United States citizen for at least seven years and an inhabitant of the state he or she represents.)

He explained while there are two Senators from each state, in Congress the district lines reflect a goal that each member represents about 750,000 people. Connecticut’s 4th district includes 17 towns and cities, including the state’s largest city, Bridgeport, with about 130,000 residents.

dc trip fundraiser

Himes talked about the three branches of government and how America’s democracy had evolved over time to include more people.

He said while Supreme Court justices and federal justices were not elected, but rather appointed, and the electoral college elects the President rather than voters, he enjoyed serving in Congress particularly because members are directly elected by voters.

dc trip fundraiser

Polarization Asked about challenges to getting members of Congress to agree, Himes said Congress was polarized.

“Things work when the two parties, who believe very different things, find grounds for compromise…if you’re going to get anything done, you’ve got to find ways to compromise. That can be hard,” he said. “But don’t be turned off by the arguments we have. Sometimes they get uncivil and sometimes they get personal, and that’s not okay.”

“Every once in a while you see it on TV that people will be getting personal about something. We call it a debate, but you can call it a fight. That’s a source of huge strength for this country. A lot of countries don’t allow for that disagreement.”

“You think you’re going to do well in China if you disagree with the government? No you are not.  Iran, North Kora – those countries that don’t allow for fight we have here – the debate – those are authoritarian countries.”

10 Places to Visit in Washington D.C.!

Washington D.C. is not only the capital of the United States, but a breathtaking, unforgettable place to visit. Tens of millions of people from all over the world come to Washington each year to enjoy the stunning sights and absorb some of the richest history America has to offer. To visit Washington at any age is to experience America in its essence, with its proudest traditions, stellar achievements, and important individuals all showcased and celebrated.

The choices facing any Washington visitor are so numerous as to become staggering. When time is limited and there is so much to do, how does one decide what parts of Washington to make part of their experience?

Here are 10 of Washington’s best sites, each of which is recognizable worldwide and packed with enthralling historical significance.

Arlington National Cemetery

The Arlington National Cemetery hosts the remains of 400,000 heroes and counting. Truly moving and inspirational, this site reminds us all of the sacrifices made by Americans since this nation’s inception to preserve our precious liberties. Schedule your visit for the changing of the guard – a must see for all visitors. The visitor center is also a point of debarkation for a bus tour to visit Washington’s Mount Vernon.

The Jefferson Memorial

The Jefferson Memorial is one of Washington D.C.'s most inspiring sites.

The Jefferson Memorial honors one of America’s most respected leaders. Thomas Jefferson was not only America’s third president, but a key Founding Father and the primary writer of the Declaration of Independence. The Jefferson Memorial is a little off the beaten path so is not visited as frequently as many of the others.  Enjoy the one mile walk from the Lincoln Memorial and visit the FDR Memorial along the way.

The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is a beautiful, popular attraction in Washington D.C.

The Lincoln Memorial is one of Washington D.C.’s most famous attractions. Abraham Lincoln was the United States’ 16th president, and, according to many, its best. Guiding the nation during its most tumultuous period, he is revered for preserving the Union and ending the institution of slavery. From the steps on the memorial one can see the Vietnam Memorial to the left, the Korean Memorial to the right and straight ahead across the reflecting pool is World War II Memorial, the Washington Monument, and over a mile away is Congress.

The National Air and Space Museum

The National Air and Space Museum is a wonderful place to see amazing technology!

The National Air and Space Museum is a testament to American bravery and ingenuity. This museum, a part of the Smithsonian Institution, is packed with amazing examples of America’s innovative relationship with machines that fly. The history of the space program comes to life as spectators progress through the various displays – helping to understand the incremental steps that lead to putting man on the moon and creating the space shuttle.

The National Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian is a marvelous place to visit!

The National Museum of the American Indian is Washington D.C.’s definitive place to visit to learn and celebrate Native Americans. A part of the Smithsonian Institution, visitors can observe a mind-boggling array of fascinating Native American artifacts and familiarize themselves with the complex, compelling history of various tribes. The design of the building makes it unique from the other Smithsonian Museums and is architecturally appropriate.

The National World War II Memorial

The amazing World War II memorial

This national memorial is a moving tribute to the tens of millions of Americans who served during World War II. A breathtaking sight, it was completed in 2004 and has been the popular destination of honor flights for WW 2 veterans.  It is located about halfway between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

The Supreme Court of the United States

The United States Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is where the judicial branch of government reviews and rules upon the laws of the land. Nine justices routinely hear cases that have a profound impact on American society, so this is not a stop to be missed! Free, regularly scheduled tours into the Supreme Courtroom are available when not in session.  Also, don’t miss the exhibits in the basement – lots of interesting history!

The United States Capitol

The U.S. Capitol Building is the seat of the United States Congress.

The Capitol is the seat of the United States Congress, the legislative branch of government. Laws are written and passed here, making it one of the nation’s most important spaces. Access to the Capitol must be pre-arranged with your congressmen or congresswomen. Did you know that the rotunda is tall enough that the Statue of Liberty would fit inside?

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Vietnam War Memorial.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors those courageous Americans who fought and died in the Vietnam War.  This beautiful memorial drives home the price paid by American servicemen like few do.

The White House

The White House is the home of the executive branch.

Perhaps the most famous residence in the world, the White House is the home of the President of the United States.  Since the early 19th century, visitors have been flocking to this incredible building. Arrange tickets ahead of time by corresponding with your Senator or Representative’s office.

Washington D.C. Youth Group Travel

Many schools will charter a bus to Washington D.C. that will also provide them transportation to the various memorials, monuments and museums. If your group is smaller and doesn’t have this luxury, consider using the Metro – Washington D.C.’s subway. It is reasonably priced and will get you near every major attraction. Two other strategies are to cluster your itinerary to see attractions that are close to each other and to always keep a D.C. map in your pocket or on your smart phone.

We hope the links and tips above make planning your class trip easier.  If you are in need of a great Washington DC Field Trip fundraiser, follow this link to the Rada Cutlery web site and request your free fundraising information packet !

Application of Funds to Student Accounts

Funds raised by individual students will be tracked on a spreadsheet by Scranton's secretary, Ms. Kilpatrick.  She will periodically e-mail the most current spreadsheet to Brightspark.  The funds listed will be credited to each individual student's account. Student Adventures will then send an invoice for the sum owed, at which time, funds held by Scranton Middle School for those individuals will be sent to Student Adventures.   If the amount raised by the student exceeds the total amount of the trip, a refund will be made to SMS for the excess funds.  These funds will then be placed in an account to provide scholarships to students with financial needs.  If the family had already made a cash payment to Student Adventures, SMS will refund the family any "out of pocket" expenses before transferring the remaining funds into the scholarship account.  If a child cancels their trip, any dollars earned through fundraising are returned to SMS and deposited in the scholarship account.

Money earned for the scholarship fund will be held until such a time that the method of awarding those funds is determined.

Fundraisers that Prepare You for Your Trip AND Raise Money

Fundraisers are a necessary part of running any student trip. Why not raise money and educate your students about your destination at the same time?

Trivia Night:

Trivia nights are fun for everyone! Prepare well in advance with questions covering a range of topics, but have a category that relates specifically to your travel destination. Students attending the trip can be responsible for writing the questions for this category. Working individually or in groups, students will research their destination and design 5-10 questions to ask at trivia night. By researching ahead of time, students are taking both an active part in the event and in learning for their trip. Here are a few articles to help you get organized, step-by-step.

Water-A-Thon

If your field trip is in the spring, you know that in many destinations it can be hot, hot, HOT! It is very important for all students to stay hydrated, both for their health and enjoyment on the trip. However, many students are unaware of what it means to be hydrated. Students need to drink water before they become thirsty. To practice hydrating and fundraise at the same time, host a Water-A-Thon fundraiser. This is an individual fundraiser and can be run on a flexible timeline. Have students request pledge money for each glass of water consumed a day. Create a pledge sheet and tracking calender, and set a pledge collection timeline. Run the event for several weeks or months to give students the time to make hydrating a habit.

Walk-A-Thon

fundraisers: walk-a-thon

photo: thegardenisland.com

As you know, the best way to see a city is by walking! Although all of our tours utilize motor coach buses, walking is still a big part of our trips. Sometimes, students are unaccustomed to frequent walking throughout the day. Help get everyone in shape and mentally prepared for the trip by hosting a Walk-A-Thon at your school. It is a fun event for your whole community. Map out distances between memorials, buildings, or other destinations on your itinerary. Have students collect pledges for each of these distances. During the event, hold up corresponding signs (re: You just walked to the White House!). This event can be run successfully both on a small or a large scale, and themed as little or as heavily as you like. Here are several resources to help you plan:

Central Texas nonprofit aimed at impacting children with terminal illnesses, disabilities holds first fundraiser

ELM MOTT, Texas (KWTX) - A Central Texas man who has funded a nonprofit to the tune of $20,000 a year or more out of his own pocket in order to bring smiles to the faces of kids and their families facing hardships is finally holding the nonprofits first fundraiser.

Jimmy Bennett, founder of JMB Fishing Foundation, will host his first fundraiser since the nonprofit formed in 2019 at Geneva Hall in Elm Mott Saturday.

“We work with kids with special abilities, with different abilities, kids with cancers, kids that are just going through difficult times in their lives,” Jimmy said.

For years, Jimmy, an outdoor enthusiast who works as the director of Maintenance for Midway ISD, has taken kids with sickness or disabilities out on his boat to fish.

He’s long believed the great outdoors is a great escape for those facing challenges.

“After having two kids with terminal cancer in my boat, I decided it was time to do something bigger,” Jimmy said.

That’s when the JMB Fishing Foundation, a registered 501c3, was formed.

The foundation has a mission “to take what we have been given and give it back, to make a difference in the lives of others.”

The foundation has helped numerous people in its first five years.

They’ve put on a livestock show for those with disabilities to compete and taken a young man with autism on his dream vacation to New York City.

And that’s just the beginning.

“We’ve taken kids on fishing trips from Waco to Wisconsin,” Jimmy said. “We’ve sent families on dream vacations to New York City, the Georgia Aquarium. We’ve sent families snow skiing in the Rocky Mountains, and we’ve sent families gator hunting in the swamps of south Louisiana.”

Jimmy said his group has focused on not only helping the individual but their families.

“There’s one thing we do differently.  We include the siblings.  We include the family.  We help create lifelong memories for these families.”

The first Jimmy Bennett Fishing Foundation fundraiser will be held Saturday at Geneva Hall in Elm Mott.

Barbeque plates will be served to-go from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for $20 a plate.

Doors will open for the main event at 5 p.m.

The fundraiser will include a silent and live auction as well as dinner and games.

Geneva Hall is located at 740 S Connally Drive.
