Schedule announced for England's first tour of Pakistan in 17 years

For the first time in 17 years, England are set to visit Pakistan to play a bumper seven-match T20I series in September-October 2022. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the fixture list for the series today (2 August).

The series begins on 20 September in Karachi, where the two sides will play the first four games before the action heads to Lahore for the last three T20Is.

Babar Azam closes in on rankings trilogy

The limited-overs series will be vital to both sides for their preparation ahead of this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in October-November. England and Pakistan are the second and third-ranked teams in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings currently and are also among the favourites for the marquee event later this year in Australia.

The T20I series will be the first leg of England's tour as they will return after the T20 World Cup for a Test series in December. The three-match could have massive World Test Championship implications, especially for Pakistan who are vying for a top two spot in the standings.

World Test Championship: How your team can reach the final

Zakir Khan, PCB Director International Cricket, said: "We are absolutely delighted to confirm hosting England for seven T20Is in Karachi and Lahore as a curtain-raiser to a busy, entertaining and exciting season of home internationals.

"England is one of the top-ranked T20I teams and them playing the shortest format in the lead up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Pakistan will not only help the team management to finalise their preparations, but will also set the tone for December’s three-Test series."

Ponting makes some big calls on T20 World Cup | ICC Review

1st T20I: 20 September, Karachi 2nd T20I: 22 September, Karachi 3rd T20I: 23 September, Karachi 4th T20I: 25 September, Karachi 5th T20I: 28 September, Lahore 6th T20I: 30 September, Lahore 7th T20I: 2 October, Lahore

Pakistan have a bumper home season lined up, which will start with England touring them for the T20I and Test series. New Zealand are then set to visit Pakistan twice – first for two-match WTC Test series and three ODIs in December 2022-January 2023 and then again in April 2023 for five ODIs and five T20Is. The three-match T20I series against West Indies will round off bilateral series engagements in the home season.

Pakistan are also set to host the ACC Asia Cup next year. The 50-over tournament will be the first multi-nation event in Pakistan since the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 1996.

Dates announced for England's first tour of Pakistan in 17 years

England pulled out of their Pakistan tour last year soon after New Zealand had abandoned their tour of the South Asian country over security concerns; watch all of England's tours of Pakistan live on Sky Sports

Mohammad Rizwan and Jos Buttler

England will tour Pakistan in September for the first time in 17 years to play seven T20Is, with three Test matches to follow in December, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Tuesday.

England pulled out of their Pakistan tour last year soon after New Zealand had abandoned their tour of the South Asian country over security concerns.

Beginning on September 20, England will play seven Twenty20 matches in Karachi and Lahore in the first leg of their tour, all of which will be shown live on Sky Sports.

  • Buttler: This is a reality check - we can't live in the past

After the T20 World Cup in Australia, England will return to play three Tests in December, the PCB said in a statement.

"We demonstrated our event planning and operational skills in the highly successful series against Australia in March/April and I am confident we will be able to replicate these when England visit us for the first time since 2005," Zakir Khan, PCB director of international cricket, said.

The tour represents England going back to the cricket-mad country for the first time since 2005, with security concerns preventing the ECB sending any squads to Pakistan in the ensuing years following the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore back in 2009.

After Pakistan helped England get cricket back on in this country two summers ago following the coronavirus pandemic bringing the world to a halt months earlier, plans for a return to the South Asian country were put in place.

However, Pakistan have since played the Australia series on home soil, after a gap of 24 years, and also landed hosting rights for next year's Asia Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Rob Key, managing director of England men's cricket at the ECB, added: "We are looking forward to returning to Pakistan and playing these seven T20Is as the team builds up to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

"We have been liaising closely with the PCB over arrangements for this visit and the Tests later in the year, and will continue to work closely with the PCB, British High Commission and other relevant authorities as we continue to prepare for these tours."

England vs SA 3rd T20

After completing their T20 series in Pakistan, England will travel to Perth to begin a three-match series against World Cup hosts Australia, before they begin group stage campaign against Afghanistan on October 22.

The PCB said the dates for England's three Test matches in Pakistan would be announced in due course, along with later visits of New Zealand and the West Indies.

England's T20 matches in Pakistan will be their first since Jos Buttler's tenure as captain began with successive series defeats to India and South Africa.

Injured stokes to miss england's summer tests.

England cricket Test captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the rest of the summer after tearing his left hamstring while playing in The Hundred.

The all-rounder will miss England's three-Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts on 21 August, with vice-captain Ollie Pope to lead the side in Stokes' absence.

Stokes, 33, was left on crutches following the injury while batting for Northern Superchargers against Manchester Originals at Old Trafford on Sunday.

He is aiming to be fit in time for England's three-Test tour of Pakistan, which begins on 7 October.

Stokes, who was playing in The Hundred for the first time in three years this season, pulled up after running a single and had to be carried off the field.

He had appeared to have returned to full fitness this summer after recovering from surgery on a left knee injury that had limited his ability to bowl.

Stokes opted out of the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup to assist with his recovery, then led England to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, taking five wickets at an average of 34.20 in three Tests.

He played three times for Northern Superchargers during The Hundred, scoring just four runs and taking no wickets.

England host Sri Lanka in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford from 21-25 August, followed by matches at Lord's and the Kia Oval.

After Pakistan, Brendon McCullum's side face New Zealand in three Tests across November and December, before a landmark 2025 that includes five Tests at home against India and an Ashes series in Australia.

"It's a big blow for Ben and England as he's captained the Test team remarkably well," former England captain Michael Vaughan told BBC Two.

"Let's hope he can get fit for Pakistan, then New Zealand, then everyone will be thinking about next year - fingers crossed Ben can get this injury right and have a fully fit 2025."

Vaughan added it is "certainly not The Hundred's fault" that Stokes got injured playing in the competition.

He said: "He could've torn his hamstring any time, it could've happened on the first day against Sri Lanka and affected the outcome of that match."

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said Stokes' injury is especially disappointing because the captain has been "transformed" by being able to bowl again this summer.

"He's been a completely different character, really enjoying himself," Agnew told BBC Radio 5 Live Drive.

"This is really bad news, not just for him but the whole momentum England were gaining."

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said it will not be adding anyone to the squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Opener Zak Crawley has already been ruled out of the series because of a broken finger, with Dan Lawrence set to partner Ben Duckett at the top of the order.

Uncapped fast bowler Dillon Pennington, who was an unused part of the squad for the West Indies series, will miss the Sri Lanka Tests after also sustaining a hamstring injury playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

Essex batter Jordan Cox was called up to the Test squad for the first time, while Nottinghamshire fast bowler Olly Stone has been recalled.

England now face a decision over how to replace Stokes, who usually bats at number six, in the team.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith could move up a position, with Chris Woakes playing as an all-rounder and batting at seven, followed by three other pace bowlers and off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.

Alternatively, Cox could make his debut batting at six, with part-time spinners Lawrence and Root supporting four frontline bowlers.

Ian Bell appointed as Sri Lanka's batting coach for upcoming England tour

F ormer England batter Ian Bell has been appointed Sri Lanka's batting coach for the upcoming tour of England. The Lankans will play three Tests at Manchester, Lord's, and Oval, starting August 21.

Bell will begin his tenure with Sri Lanka on August 16 and remain until the end of the three-Test series.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO, Ashley De Silva said in a statement:

"We appointed Ian to bring in a person with local knowledge to help the players with key insights on the conditions there. Ian has a lot of experience playing in England, and we believe his inputs will help our team in this crucial tour."

Ian Bell played across all formats for England from 2004 to 2015, finishing with over 13,000 international runs and 26 centuries.

He boasted incredible Test numbers on difficult batting conditions at home, scoring 4,450 runs at an average of 47.84 with 15 centuries and 25 half-centuries in 65 outings.

Sri Lanka have won three out of their last four Test series but all played on familiar Asian conditions. They defeated Ireland and Afghanistan at home and beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh.

However, the lone series defeat in that stretch came against Pakistan at home last year.

As for England, they will enter the Sri Lankan series with confidence after dispatching the West Indies at home last month.

While they are sixth on the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) table, Sri Lanka are sitting pretty on fourth with 24 points in four games.

Sri Lanka last played a Test series in England way back in 2016

Sri Lanka previously played a Test series in England in 2016, with the home side pulling off a 2-0 win in the three-match affair.

England won the first two Tests convincingly by an innings margin and nine wickets. However, the Lankans avoided a series whitewash by salvaging a draw in the finale.

England also won the subsequent Test series in Sri Lanka in 2018 and 2021 by 3-0 and 2-0 margins, respectively. However, the Asian side can take solace from the fact that they stunned England in England by a 1-0 margin in the Test series in 2014.

Overall, the teams have met 36 times in Tests, with England holding a 17-8 advantage and 11 draws.

Basit Ali warns Pakistan of security breach ahead of Bangladesh series

Former pakistan cricketer basit ali warned pakistan cricket board (pcb) against security breaches ahead of the bangladesh series. bangladesh is in pakistan to play two tests..

Listen to Story

Mohsin Naqvi Pakistan Cricket Board

  • Basit Ali warns PCB of security breach in Bangladesh series
  • Pakistan and Bangladesh will play two Tests from August 21
  • Pakistan will host Champions Trophy 2025

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has warned Pakistan against any security lapses as the nation prepares itself for a packed cricketing calendar. Notably, Pakistan are all set to host Bangladesh for a two-match Test series beginning from 21 st August.

They will further host England for three Tests in Otober. Ahead of the series, Ali has expressed his concern regarding the security saying that any mishap in the upcoming series could lead to their hosting rights for the Champions Trophy 2025 being snatched away.

"Since the Champions Trophy is in Pakistan, and teams like England and West Indies are scheduled to tour after Bangladesh, we must pay attention to security. God forbid, the Champions Trophy won't be played here if there is any incident in these tours. Our soldiers are getting martyred in Balochistan and Peshawar. Only the government can answer why it has been happening, but it's wrong,” said Ali on his Youtube Channel.

The former batter also said that the security forces must be on their toes and the teams should get the same security as their Prime Minister and President.

"We must ensure that there is not even a small security breach. The foreign teams should get the same security as our Prime Minister and President. I am sure, Mohsin Naqvi will be aware of these things,” he added.

India and Pakistan's turbulent cricketing relations

Notably, India and Pakistan don’t hold bilateral cricket relations since 2013 while India last toured Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. Ever since the Mumbai Terror attacks, India haven’t travelled to Pakistan for international cricket.

England will be without captain Ben Stokes for the rest of the English summer after he picked up a hamstring injury, with batter Ollie Pope taking over the captaincy in his absence, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old all-rounder, who tore his left hamstring while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred on Sunday, will miss their three-match test series against Sri Lanka.

"(Stokes) is aiming to return for England's winter test tour of Pakistan, scheduled to start in early October. The tour includes three test matches in Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi," the ECB said in a statement.

England will host Sri Lanka at Old Trafford for the first test starting on Aug. 21.
