Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

Grand teton scenic float trips: the essentials.

A Grand Teton scenic float trip glides down 10 of the most beautiful river miles in the world and represents a unique vantage point to view the Tetons and all sorts of wildlife at close range. Although permitted boaters can float the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park,  we recommend that you book a trip with one of Jackson Hole's seasoned outfitters, as their knowledge of this advanced section of the river and surrounding terrain will ensure a safe and relaxing trip. If you love photo ops where no one else is around, amazing up-close wildlife encounters and activities that work for the whole family, a scenic float is the way to go!

Quick Facts

  • River trips take place from mid-May through September.
  • Duration:  Allocate 2.5 to 3 hours total, with between 1 to 1.5 hours on the river. Trip times adjust according to the river’s water flow and length of daylight.
  • Cost: Around $100 for adults; reduced rates for children.
  • Where: From Deadman's Bar to Moose Landing in Grand Teton National Park.
  • Ages: Ages  6 and up. Check with your outfitter.
  • Intensity: Low. Unlike a whitewater trip, passengers are not expected to paddle.
  • Highlights: Scenery, wildlife spotting and getting to learn more about Grand Teton National Park and the Snake River.

Best for ...

Those who don’t necessarily want to experience the rough and tumble—and wetness!—of a whitewater trip but still desire to get out on the Snake River to see Jackson Hole and its environs by water. If you're in the mood for something more contemplative and would like to be able to get some great shots of the Tetons and (hopefully) some stellar wildlife shots as well, a Grand Teton scenic float trip is likely more your ticket. Children of varying ages are welcome.

What are my options?

Your trip will generally last around 2-1/2 to 3 hours and cover the 10-mile stretch of river in Grand Teton National Park from Deadman’s Bar to Moose Village, near Dornan’s.

There's no need to worry about over-exerting yourself during a scenic float.  Unlike a whitewater trip, passengers need not paddle.  The guide acts as rudder and oarsman the entire time.

Due to the popularity of scenic float trips in the summer, we recommend that you make reservations ahead of time. Bad weather conditions can occasionally cause trip cancellations.

What's included?

Your outfitter will provide transportation from Moose Village to the launch site at Deadman’s Bar as well as life jackets, plus interpretive guide services on the fauna, feather-friends and flora that live in and along the Snake River.

Rain ponchos will be provided in case of sudden showers.

When's a good time to go?

Trips are offered from mid-May through September at several time slots per day in peak floating season. If you've got a busy day planned, be sure to set aside 3 hours from door to door for your river expedition—that way you won't be late to your next activity!

Grand Teton National Park is home to the greatest variety of wildlife in the 48 contiguous states and the best time to see a lot of wildlife is on an early morning or late afternoon/sunset float.

What should I bring?

You will stay dry during your scenic float.  The water moves lazily and most outfitters equip their boats with splash guards. For the cooler temperatures of the early morning or an evening float, a jacket, fleece or thick sweater is suggested.

Bring a camera to catch dramatic snapshots of wildlife, as well as the varying views of the Teton skyline.  Binoculars can also come in handy for identifying high-flying birds and far-off critters.

The Last Word

Floating 10 miles down the Snake River past the Teton Range in Grand Teton National Park should be on every Jackson Hole visitor’s to-do list.

If you decide on this laid-back approach to river trips, we’d like to congratulate you.  Floating down the Snake with the Tetons looming over your shoulder is a meditative experience that is “awesome” in the truest sense of the word.    This is a great activity for groups and can be fitted around your other plans. It is also very safe —most of the risk lies in getting a sunburn!

Scenic floats also provide a chance to learn more about Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and the iconic Snake River from an experienced guide while enjoying the unmatched scenic beauty.

Grand Teton National Park, located in Wyoming, is a remarkable destination that encompasses both the breathtaking Teton Mountain Range and the scenic Jackson Hole valley. Its vast expanse of over 300,000 acres serves as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and their vital habitats, while also reminding us of the importance of preserving our natural world amidst the ever-expanding human development.

The Teton Mountain Range stands proudly on the western side of Jackson Hole, resembling a majestic rocky crown. Visitors often find themselves captivated by the mountains, sometimes overlooking the incredible beauty of the surrounding geographic “hole.” In every direction, whether it’s the North, East, West, or South, one is greeted by awe-inspiring mountain vistas. These peaks rise to elevations exceeding 12,000-13,000 feet, with the Grand Teton being the tallest at an impressive 13,775 feet. The range’s steep, rocky terrain lacks foothills and seamlessly transitions into the high alpine regions from the valley floor. These young mountains, shaped by geological forces over time, boast dramatic jagged peaks that have yet to be weathered by wind, snow, and rain. Their presence has significantly influenced the biodiversity and anthropological history of Jackson Hole. The mountains, combined with the region’s extreme winters, have created natural barriers and selective pressures that favor larger mammals like elk, moose, and bison, while limiting the survival of reptiles and amphibians.

The valley floor, sitting over 6,000 feet above sea level, appears relatively flat and open, save for the sculpting forces of rivers and past glacial activity that have shaped depressions and moraines. Here, a unique habitat known as a steppe prevails, characterized by high elevation desert conditions with sagebrush as the predominant shrub. As one ventures closer to the base of the surrounding mountain ranges, the sagebrush gives way to diverse evergreen species and groves of aspen trees. At elevations above 9,000 feet, the terrain transforms into a rugged alpine habitat, with the tree line fading into exposed rock, permanent snowfields, and sharp, jagged peaks.

The varied habitats within the park have nurtured a rich array of species, including some of North America’s largest land mammals. Bison, weighing up to 2,000 pounds, and moose, reaching a maximum of 1,200 pounds, roam these lands. Apex predators such as the gray wolf and the grizzly bear, vital to the ecosystem’s balance, can also be found here. These predators help control the populations of prey species like elk and deer, preventing overpopulation and maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Additionally, Jackson Hole is home to an impressive diversity of unique species, including the pronghorn, the fastest land mammal in North America, the industrious beaver, the elusive badger, the regal bald eagle, and the playful river otter, among many others. The biodiversity found in this area seems endless.

The human history of Grand Teton National Park dates back approximately 11,000 years when indigenous peoples migrated north as the last ice age receded. While it is believed that these native communities did not have permanent settlements in the valley, they would spend summers there and seek warmer locations during winter. It wasn’t until the 1860s that people began to settle and develop Jackson Hole, a challenging endeavor due to the rugged terrain and steep mountains. However, the allure of owning land outweighed the obstacles, and by the time Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929, homesteads could be found throughout the valley floor. The expansion of human development had a significant impact on the local wildlife and their habitats, prompting conservation efforts that continue to preserve and enhance the natural diversity of the region.

While exploring Grand Teton National Park, guests can embark on a 10-mile scenic float with Solitude Float Trips, providing an opportunity to experience the park’s beauty from a unique perspective. This leisurely float trip allows you to soak in the picturesque surroundings while peacefully gliding along the serene waters. Marvel at the towering Teton Range, the pristine wild and scenic river, and the possibility of encountering wildlife along the way.  By combining a wildlife safari tour and scenic float trip all in one, you get the best of both worlds, all in the same day.

What animals will we see in Grand Teton National Park?

The wildlife you may see in Grand Teton National Park varies by season.  Some animals migrate, some animals hibernate and some animals are visible throughout the year, if you know where to look.  In spring, you might find grizzly bears, black bears, mountain bluebirds and bison calves.  In the height of summer, you’re more likely to find bison and pronghorn.  In the autumn, black bears and moose may be easier to spot.  During the winter months, you may see elk, bighorn sheep, moose (possibly without their antlers), coyotes, foxes, and more.

What should I wear on a Grand Teton float trip?

Please dress comfortably for your tour – layers are always a good idea.  The morning may be cool, even in the summer months, so it’s important to have a layer you can remove later on when it warms up.  Dress in shoes that you are comfortable walking around in.  While you’re on the river, you can expect to stay relatively dry. It may feel slightly cooler on the raft, so it’s advisable to have an extra layer handy in case you feel the need for additional warmth. You’re welcome to bring a small backpack on the river for your personal belongings, (make sure you don’t leave personal items in the river shuttle vehicle, as you will not be returning to that vehicle). Your feet should remain dry, allowing you to wear most types of shoes like tennis shoes or walking shoes. However, please avoid wearing footwear that could potentially damage the raft, such as cleated hiking boots, sandals with heels, or shoes with hard soles.  Sunglasses and a hat is generally advisable – and don’t forget to apply sunscreen before you head outside for the day.

Which is the most scenic section of the Snake River to float?

The Snake River offers a multitude of scenic sections to float, each with its own unique beauty and charm. However, one particularly picturesque stretch renowned for its captivating scenery is the portion that runs through Grand Teton National Park. As the river meanders through the park, it winds its way at the base of the majestic Teton Mountain Range, offering breathtaking views of towering peaks, lush alpine forest, and high altitude meadows. The tranquil waters of the upper Snake River reflect the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Floating along this section of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park provides an immersive experience in the heart of one of nature’s most remarkable and breathtaking landscapes.

The designation of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park as a Wild and Scenic River (2009) stands as a testament to its exceptional natural value and the need for its preservation. This prestigious designation recognizes the river’s remarkable qualities, including its outstanding scenic beauty, pristine water quality, and diverse ecosystem. As the river winds through the heart of the park, carving its way at the base of the mountains and offering awe-inspiring views of the iconic Teton Range, its waters support a rich array of plant and animal life, making it a vital habitat for numerous species. The designation as a Wild and Scenic River serves to protect and maintain the river’s unique character, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at its splendor and enjoy the transformative experiences it provides.

Do we need to be fit or active to participate on a wildlife safari or scenic float?

While a wildlife safari may not entail as much physical exertion as other outdoor activities, it’s important to consider a few factors when assessing your readiness for this experience. Grand Teton National Park is situated at high elevation, which necessitates proper hydration in the summer months especially. The majority of walks during the safari are optional, providing you with the flexibility to tailor your activity level according to your personal comfort. This allows you to enjoy the safari at a pace that suits you best while taking into account the unique characteristics of the park’s elevated terrain.

Participating in a scenic float does not require a high level of athleticism, but it does necessitate some degree of agility and mobility. While our drivers and guides are available to provide assistance, it is essential that you take personal responsibility throughout the duration of the trip. Transportation to the launch site will be in a 15-passenger van, which may require stepping up into the vehicle and possibly climbing into the back, if needed. The van ride itself is relatively short, lasting around 15-20 minutes. Upon arrival at the launch site, you will encounter three steps leading to the trailer used as a dock. From there, you have a short walk to the raft and a significant step down, into the raft. Once aboard the raft, seating is on the tube without any shade cover or solid back support. When the trip concludes, disembarkation involves walking on uneven ground up a river bank for approximately 5 yards until reaching a flat pavement area. It’s important to note that the landing area may vary depending on the time of year, with limited maneuvering space when water levels are high during the spring season.

As our collective office staff cannot fully assess individual circumstances from a distance, we kindly request that you honestly reflect on these requirements and determine for yourself whether you feel capable of participating in this activity. Your safety and comfort are of utmost importance, and we want to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience on safari and on the river with us.

Are there age limits or special requirements for either the wildlife safari or scenic float?

For an open safari, we ask that children are 8 and older in order to participate.  Children under 8 years of age may not be booked on an open safari.  For this particular tour, because every guest will participate on the Grand Teton Scenic Float as well, the minimum age for our private tours will be 6 and older.  (Our wildlife safaris that are strictly van-based do not have an age minimum for private tours).  Children under 45lbs will not be allowed to participate because they cannot safely fit into a required flotation device.

Guests weighing more than 260lbs (118kg) or who have a chest circumference of more than 56in (142cm) may not fit into the universal floatation device required for the river.  Please contact us immediately if you are questioning your ability to participate.

We will have a few vehicle transitions throughout the day as well as short walking distances on uneven or unstable terrain.  Guests with limited mobility should contact us directly to discuss these concerns.  We will help you evaluate the minimum requirements to participate and make our best recommendations based on your abilities.

Best Grand Teton Float Trip: Review and Tips

See Grand Teton National Park on a float trip for an incredible, new perspective!

Adding a half-day guided float trip is an excellent way to experience another side of this Wyoming park, while getting up close to some of the area’s wildlife.

This adventure is gentle enough for even younger kids to enjoy, while the stunning scenery and guide commentary will keep everyone intrigued.

During our visit to Grand Teton National Park, my family spent about 4 hours on an excellent river float excursion, and it ended up being a highlight of our time in Jackson Hole.

If you’d like to add a similar trip to your next Grand Teton visit (and you really should!), you’ll find everything you need to know below from what to wear to how to book.

This post contains affiliates. If you purchase through the links below, I will receive a commission at no charge to you.

Grand Tetons National Park River Float FAQs

What body of water will i be floating on.

On this river tour, you’ll be exploring the Snake River , which cuts through Wyoming and Idaho on its way to the Pacific ocean.

While the specific section of the river that you’ll travel may change depending on river conditions, you’re likely to put in on the Snake River off of the Grand Teton Park Access Road just south of the Triangle X Ranch.

Your float will take you about 10 miles (depending on river conditions) to the area of the park called Moose.

The river guides will then take you by van back to your car.

The tour company that we went through is the Grand Teton Lodge Company , and they come recommended.

For a slightly longer experience on a lower section of the Snake River, Teton Scenic Floats runs a very similar river tour from Moose down 13 miles towards Jackson, Wyoming.

What kind of boat will I ride on?

Unlike a river float like we’ve done elsewhere in the country—when floating the French Broad in Asheville, NC , for example—this river float is more akin to white water rafting than it is tubing.

The water isn’t anywhere near rough enough for white water rafting, but you’ll be on that style of large, inflatable raft.

Your raft will hold around 12 people and a guide, plus lifesaving equipment that you hopefully won’t need.

I rode on smaller but similarly shaped rafts when I’ve been whitewater rafting in North Carolina and Tennessee. These are sturdy and nearly indestructible boats, especially when they’re heading down calm waters like this section of the Snake River.

Is this tour good for kids?

My kids—ages 7 and 10—enjoyed this tour immensely. The very mild rapids at the end of the ride were just enough to give my 7 year old a thrill (and for me to hang onto the back to his life jacket tightly!).

Overall, I don’t think I’d bring kids younger than 6 or 7 on this trip as I’d be too nervous about them sitting on the side of the float. While it isn’t hard to stay balanced on the wide bench-style side of the raft, I wouldn’t want to put a baby, toddler, or preschooler in that position.

There’s just nothing they’d get out of this trip that young, and the stress of hanging on to them would prevent me from enjoying the ride.

My elementary aged kids loved the incredible views from the raft. Our experience here was a great balance to the many hikes and ranger tours we did on the ground, and I’m so glad we put this river float into our Grand Teton itinerary with kids .

Our guide was excellent with my kids, and he invited each of them to guide the raft during a slower section of the river.

My 10-year-old took him up on this offer and had the best time learning how to be a river guide.

What should I wear to this river float?

You’ll want to watch the weather carefully in the days leading up to your float as the temperatures can fluctuate wildly in Grand Teton National Park, even in the summer months.

We took our river float tour towards the end of the summer (Labor Day weekend, to be exact), and it was a brisk 45 degrees mid-day.

On a nicer day, you could get away with shorts, a t-shirt, and perhaps a light jacket.

Our river guides and a couple of the people on our tour had on Teva/Chaco style sandals, and they all mentioned that their feet were cold.

We stuck to our hiking shoes and wool socks. You don’t need to get your feet wet at any point during the tour, so you don’t have to wear specific footwear.

When is this tour available?

Since winter hits hard in Wyoming and then lingers for about 8 months, you can only take a Snake River float tour from June to early October.

Even during that time, you’re likely to have snow, sleet, thunderstorms, and other intense weather.

For the most part, the tours continue on regardless of a little rain or snow. They will, however, be postponed or canceled if there is thunder, ice, or particularly heavy snow or rain.

Check the exact starting and ending dates from the tour company each year, especially if you’re planning to visit during the start or ending of the season.

Grand Teton River Float Trip Itinerary

While there are a couple of companies offering similar excursions in both the morning and afternoon, I’m going to focus on a typical half-day trip.

These half-day trips don’t include snacks or a meal, though you can bring your own water and snacks along with you.

You can book a more expensive float that includes a boxed lunch and a quick picnic on one of the islands in the river, but, honestly, that boxed lunch is going to come from the same Delaware North catering kitchen as the other restaurants in Grand Teton—and it’s going to cost significantly more.

Unless you’re super attached to the idea of a boxed lunch on an island, stick to the half day tour and grab a meal before/after.

We did the morning half-day excursion, which lasted roughly from 8 AM-noon. If you take the afternoon tour, expect the same progression of events, just from 12:00/12:30 PM to 4:00/4:30 PM, depending on the exact departure and arrival times.

Times and meeting locations change based on the season, river conditions, and guide availability, so always check the details provided in your specific booking materials.

8 AM: Arrive at meeting location

The morning of our float trip dawned sunny but cold, so we layered up and headed over to our meeting location at the Jackson Lake Lodge.

Once there, we checked in with the attendant at the activities desk.

NOTE: We’d signed all of the liability waivers the night before, so our check in was super quick the morning of. If this is offered during your visit, I’d highly recommend doing so as it means you’ll get a few extra minutes of sleep before your tour!

8:30 AM: Guides arrive

We met our 2 guides for the day at the hotel. They introduced themselves and then re-counted to make sure everyone who’d check in was indeed still hanging around.

We got a quick overview on what the day was going to be like with a final reminder to buy any snacks or drinks, and to use the restrooms one last time.

NOTE: There is one more restroom near the launch site, but it’s a cold vault toilet. You’ve been warned.

8:45 AM: Depart the meeting location

If you’re late beyond this time, you’re out of luck as the group and the guides got into our tour van to go to the actual launch site.

Since there isn’t any permanent commercial property directly on the river, the river tour companies have to haul in their rafts for every tour.

Since the typical put-in location is down a gravel road with a serious grade, the companies have the visitors meet them at an easier to find location (hence, the hotel lobby).

From Jackson Lake Lodge to the riverside location took us about 30 minutes.

Note that you will be in a 12 passenger van with little personal space. Get to know your fellow rafters as this is the same group you’ll stay with all day.

9:15 AM: Arrive at the Snake River ramp.

Here, you’ll get a short safety briefing before you’re fitted with life jackets.

They did have adult and children’s sizes available. Since the life jackets are highly adjustable, both my 10- and 7-year-old kids were able to get a snug fit.

(As a former lifeguard, I don’t mess around with bodies of water and kids. Always use a life jacket in these situations!)

We also had the chance to use those wonderful vault toilets that I mentioned earlier. Better safe than sorry as this is the last opportunity you’ll have until you get to the other end of the river tour!

While the passengers were adjusting life jackets and using the restrooms, the guides were busy putting the raft into the river and preparing for the tour.

9:25 AM: Board the raft.

While one of the guides holds the raft steady, the other helps each guest into the raft.

These rafts are pretty big—we had 10 people on our tour with a couple of empty spots, and it felt spacious.

That being said, the raft has some bounce to it that takes some getting used to.

In the first five minutes of boarding, I was convinced that one or both of my kids was going to bounce right off the side.

However, by the time we got underway, I saw that 1) the guide was quite adept at rafting, and 2) the river wasn’t anywhere near rough enough to throw anyone.

Perhaps I’m overly worried as I was once thrown into freezing water while going over a Class 4 rapids in North Carolina. SO COLD.

In any case, the guides will get you onto the raft and help you stow your bags.

9:30 AM: And we’re off!

Once boarding is complete, our younger, less experienced guide drug us further into the Snake River and gave us a push. He then headed back to the van to warm up and meet us on the other end of the river float.

Our senior guide, Trevor, settled in and quickly situated our raft into the middle of the river.

He chatted a bit about himself, had us all introduce ourselves, and then explained a few of the things we’d see along the way.

Trevor encouraged us to ask questions to help him focus his spiel for the group’s interests. He had plenty of fun tidbits that he talked about unprompted.

However, through the questions of the group, he clearly knew a wide range of information on the park’s history, wildlife, weather, river, and more.

We spotted multiple bald eagles on the trip, one of which was fighting an osprey over a fish.

We didn’t see any larger wildlife, but that’s a game of chance—you might see grizzly bears, moose, elk, and deer on any given day.

On a calmer section of the Snake River, Trevor made sure that he took pictures of each family/group on the tour. We ended up getting the only photo of all 5 of my family members on the trip this way!

By the time we arrived in Moose at the end of the tour, we’d traveled a little over 7 miles throughout the heart of Grand Teton National Park.

11:15 AM: Reboard the van.

Once we arrived at Moose, we waited for a few minutes in the parking lot while the guides loaded the boat onto the trailer.

The weather was still pretty chilly despite the fact that it was early September. Trevor, our guide, had mentioned that they’d had snow in June earlier that season, so you never know what to expect from the Wyoming weather.

Thankfully, the van was already toasty when we climbed back in.

The group was much more chatty on the ride back since we’d had the chance to get to know one another throughout the morning.

11:45 AM: Return to starting location.

The guides will return you to your starting location at the Jackson Lake Lodge, where you can eat lunch or return to your car.

If you’re staying here for lunch, I highly recommend the vintage-themed Pioneer Grill on the second floor. They had incredible burgers, buffalo chicken loaded fries, chicken fingers, and brownies.

The second floor of the Jackson Lake Lodge also has a couple of shops. There’s an outdoor shop with jackets, backpacks, socks, etc.; a gift shop with cute pajamas, t-shirts, stickers, and mugs; and a general store with home goods, chips, and soft drinks.

Review of the Grand Teton Snake River Rafting Tour

We had an excellent time on our Grand Teton river float. Everything ran right on time, the guides were knowledgeable, and the weather was perfect.

To maximize your experience, I highly recommend getting to know your guides a bit. The men and women who are drawn to this line of work are never boring people, and it’s fascinating to hear about the places they’ve guided and what they’ve got coming up in the off season.

For example, our guide, Trevor, has been guiding for a decade overall and for 4 years on the Snake River. At the end of the season, he was planning to do a 10-day rafting trip down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon with 24 other river guides!

The guides also know so much about the area and are happy to give you restaurant, activity, and hiking recommendations.

You’ll also want to arrive at your selected meet-up point—and do so early. The guides are on a strict time schedule and can’t wait for anyone who’s straggling.

In fact, they only have about 45 minutes between their morning and afternoon floats, which barely gives them enough time to tell one group goodbye before they have to check in their second group of the day.

Do everyone a favor and plan to get to the meeting point at least 20 minutes before your set arrival time. This also gives you time to grab food and use the restroom.

You’ll want to take food and drinks on the float since you’ll be on the river for at least 2 hours. If you’re my children, you’re starving after an hour without snacks, so pack whatever will keep you and your family happy for the duration.

We packed chips, fruit, and water bottles, but my 7 year old would’ve happily eaten a sandwich if I’d packed it. Err on the side of caution and pack more than you think you’ll need.

Just remember that you’re not able to bring any alcoholic beverages on these types of floats.

The Snake river from the northern end of Grand Teton National Park to just above Jackson, Wyoming, is relatively calm. You’ll mostly be floating on barely moving water, but you will encounter a section or two of Class 2 rapids.

This might sound scary, but Class 2 is pretty mild. You’ve probably been over bumpier water if you’ve done a river rapids ride at a theme park. It’s definitely more fun than terrifying.

When you’re on the water, keep an eye out for places where you can see the changing river environment. The Snake River is still carving out this part of Wyoming, and pretty dramatically in many areas.

You might see places where the entire river bed has shifted by 50 or 75 feet, where trees on the banks have been uprooted, or where new islands have been created from displacement of the river bed.

Seeing the national park from one of its most powerful elements is unforgettable. You’ll get some incredible pictures, but you’ll also come away from this river float with a new appreciation for the beauty of this park.

You will mostly stay dry during the float trip, but there is a possibility of a few minor splashes throughout. This is a great trip to bring your camera, some water, and some snacks for you to enjoy while taking in all the beautiful scenery. All necessary safety gear including life jackets will be provided for you. In case there is rain, we will also provide you with ponchos.

Whitewater:

Unlike our float trips, you will be getting wet during your rafting adventure! We recommend quick-dry clothes or swimsuits and to avoid cotton. Wetsuits are great for colder days, and rain jackets are helpful for rainy days. Shoes are required on all of our trips, there is a walk back to the bus after your trip, and you’ll be glad to have them. We do not recommend bringing your camera because it will get wet, there are two professional companies that take pictures and videos at the largest rapids.

Dry clothes, snacks, and water can be left on the bus for your ride back to our office, and there will be changing rooms available at the end of the trip. Be sure to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water prior to your tip. Safety gear and equipment will be provided to you for your adventure!

We are limited by the National Forest Service as to how many people we can bring down the Snake River on one trip. Reviews From Our Guests

“We had the most amazing experience with both the scenic and whitewater rafting adventure! Our scenic guide, Jake, was knowledgeable and kind. Our whitewater raft guide, Spencer, was totally funny, knowledgeable, and personable. An awesome trip indeed!!! Totally recommend.”

Veronica Nelson

“I am not a person who regularly writes reviews, but our family of four had the most amazing experience with Teton Whitewater. 100% of the staff members we encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful. You can tell that the employees care about making sure the rafting experience is fun and exciting for everyone. The bathrooms and rented wetsuits were clean and in good condition. I had some questions before the trip and my emails were always answered within 15 minutes of when I sent them. Our guide, Spencer, was outstanding. It was obvious that he was experienced and knowledgeable. Our raft had a great time getting to know each other and Spencer made sure he got to know each of us, as well. As we drove away after the trip my two teenagers said that this experience was the coolest thing we have ever done on a trip. Thank you all for the great family experience that will last a lifetime.”

Abigail Turgeon

“Most fun I have had in years! Awesome adventure with the best staff imaginable. I could not have been happier with my experience.”

John Parker

“Super fun! The guides make it such a fun and different experience from some of the other companies in town! This is the one to use for sure!”

Tanner Pursley

Frequently asked questions, how early should i book my trip.

We encourage you to make your booking as soon as possible just to make sure you secure your spot!

The larger your group or family, the earlier you should book. For groups less than 10 people you can call and cancel and get a full refund as long as you do so at least 48 hours (two days) before your trip. For groups over 10 people, the same rule applies except you must call and cancel at least one week before your trip.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

For Scenic trips you shouldn’t get wet and normal casual clothes are encouraged, it’s always a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater as well. Your feet might get wet so please keep that in mind and be sure to choose appropriate footwear. Scenic trips include complimentary water as well as blankets and ponchos in case of inclement weather. Feel free to bring some snacks as well

For Whitewater trips, swimsuits and sturdy footwear are encouraged for this trip, you might even want to consider renting wetsuits or booties from our office to help you stay warm!

WHAT CLASS OF RAPIDS ARE ON THE SNAKE RIVER?

On the official Class I – Class V rapids scale, the Snake River is classified as a Class II. This means our stretch of river is an intermediate rating and is great for all rafters!

Be aware that high or low water flows can change river conditions and the experience you might have. Stay informed, and plan your trip accordingly. Our safety record is top-notch, and we focus on mitigating risk, and always put safety first.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITEWATER TRIPS AND SCENIC TRIPS?

Our scenic trip is a 13 mile Wilson Scenic float. It’s a beautiful stretch of the Snake River with typically 8 to 10 people on one scenic boat. The Wilson float is great for seeing bald eagles, moose, and other wildlife and scenery!

Our 8-mile whitewater rafting trip includes splashy rapids like Big Kahuna, Lunch Counter, Ropes, and Champagne, so you are sure to get tons of splashes and have a lot of fun!

Both trips include an experienced and trained guide, ask them whatever you want! Both scenic and whitewater trips are amazing and by far the most fun you’ll have in Jackson Hole!

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

For groups less than 10 people cancellation is allowed up to 48 hours before your trip day and time, for groups of 10 or more people cancellation is allowed up to one week before your trip day and time. Anything canceled after these times will not be eligible for a refund.

How soon should we book a float trip for around June 8th? Same question fir Jackson rodeo as well. Thank you

If there's only one particular night you can attend the rodeo, I'd book it a couple of weeks ahead. If you're also constrained on what day or time you can do the float, I'd book it at least 2 weeks ahead.

Thanks for asking this! We are looking for the same info.
