Light, Fit Geometry, Easy Upgrade, Quality

I've bought a few Trek MTB frames, SL & ZX. This is a white 8000 SL with black and red decals, yr. 2000 my guess. I used the LX shifters and brakes, everything else is upgraded or old skool components I just prefer. I buy my Trek MTB frame a size smaller, then tweak to fit with a long Thudbuster seatpost and riser bar. The bikes are lighter and more comfortable this way. I am not a racer, but I might spend an entire day exploring ridge lines. These frames are great, light, stiff and take upgrades well. Long top tube, but if you jump down a size they tend to fit up perfectly, for me anyway. They need a 172.5 or longer crank arm, shorter and they feel underpowered to me. Super all around frame that looks great a decade later.

Similar Products Used:

Specialized; Trek ZX; 29ers

I got my 8000 earlier this summer. A few minor changes before I took the bike home. First of all, the pedals. I got rid of the cheapies and put on Shimano M-774's, which have yet to fail me. I also swapped the Judy with a Manitou Pro-C, which seems to be working well. The Manitou is easy to work on and adjust, (tho not without tools!) and seems pretty bomb proof. Though I only weigh 145 lbs it has held up really well to my abuse. The bike just BEGS me to climb, and on the decents the Avid brakes never fail. Definatly the best bike I have ever owned, and well worth the 500 bucks (sweet deal eh?) I paid for it,If I could give it a 10 I would!

Great bike period. The price doesn't hurt either. Picked mine up for a little over $800. XT/LX, ICON, Bontranger components. The ride feels more like a steel frame than any other aluminum frame I have ridden.(This is good only if you like the smooth ride of steel but the stiffness of aluminum.) Switched the pedals out for 535's so I could ride around town without my cleated shoes.

Great Frame and component mix. Accelerates and climbs great. Turns on a dime (but feels kinda twitchy sometimes)

Front shock (Judy t2) and grips (I switched to Serfas). Tires aren't so hot in mud.

My feelings after 1.5 years on this bike-- it still rocks like a mother. I've put some serious miles on it and have had almost no problems. The front shock needs to be replaced soon, and I smashed the rear shifter. I've had no problems with the frame, other than that damn creaking sound. I love this bike and don't regret for moment buying it. I don't know what the new 8000's are like, but if they're anything like the '98s do your self a favor and buy one. Rock on.

Trek 930 (my previous bike), many Cannondale and Gary Fisher hardtails (friends bikes and rentals)

This is the second mountain bike I have owned; my first being a 1982 Univega Alpina Ultima. So, with that fact known, this was a major step up. The two complaints that I have with this bike is the Icon pedals which I bent a critical part that didn't allow me to clip in on one side. This seemed like a design issue. I replace them with Shimano 535's, free of charge after the Trek representative looked at them. These pedals don't seem to have the design flaws of the Icon pedals. The second complaint is with the Judy T2 fork. With the area that I do most of my riding (the mountains around the Phoenix area which are steep and rocky), my riding style being aggressive and just the fact that I'm 5'11 195lbs; this fork is just way too progressive on the rebound. I would climb a steep hill, hit a few rocks and it would be a struggle to keep the bike aimed straight up the hill! After I upgraded to damping cartridges and heavier springs the problem seemed to have diminish greatly. Other than that, why pay thousands of dollars more for a mountain bike? It rides great! I'm totally satisfied with this bike. From here on out, I'll replace parts as I break them.

The frame rocks.... period. All around great performer with little initial $$ outlay. Sprints up hills like it never knew who Newton was. I love this bike

Creaky frame noise after many, many miles... but that's it.

The resume of this bike? Over 5000 miles now. Riding conditions have been in mud and muck on the North shore of Oahu in Hawaii, Fire roads in California, Japanese Urban Assault Mountain biking in Japan, a century ride combining cross country and streets through the jungles of Borneo, Blazing, salty, sun drenched mountain rides on the coral rocks of saipan, Okinawa, Guam, Tinian. This bike has taken me to and from work every day for the past three years. I can take it offroad and beat it all day and it will still deliver me safely the next day to work. All I do is my own tuneups and some TLC. A truly faithful steed indeed.

Trek 930, Bianchi, Schwinn

Good value for the money when new.

Annoying original pedals. So-so original shock. Frame, while light, was not very durable. Manufacturer seems more interested in volume rather than quality.

Bottom line? I will NEVER purchase another Trek bike (or, for that matter, a Fischer, Klien, or Bontrager bike) again. This bike was no trouble for about 6 months, but ever since then has been nothing but trouble. I ride my bike pretty hard, but then again, what serious rider doesn't? The most annoying problem is the constant BB creak, that no one (even Trek dealers) seems to know how to fix. Further, my original frame cracked at the weld where the drive-side chainstay meets the bottom bracket, but the local Trek dealer did not inspect that area when my original frame began creaking pretty bad last summer. I found out later from the Trek rep himself that Trek has known about this problem since 1998. My new warranty frame has been no better, as I still have the constant BB creak. I am sick of this bike. I would not recommend this bike to anyone who is even moderately serious about biking.

Research Dynamics Coyote, Fischer Paragon and Specialized M2 StumpJumper.

Very responsive -- truly, what goes in is what comes out. Any mistakes are MINE and not the bike's. Climbs very well and descends even better. Comfortable ride with the power going right to the wheel.

None that I can see (cranks and rings are the cheesiest components but will be looking to go Raceface someday. Also, LX/XT mix is OK but clearly the XTR upgrade is down the line -- good news is that between the frame quality and the Trek warranty, upgrades are worth it)

My first MTB and after lots of test rides, I made the right decision. Every time I ride, I enjoy the time on the bike and can't wait to get back out. And as a first bike, it's nearly perfect since it "teaches" good bike skills -- i.e. as above, what goes in is what comes out. Light weight and responsiveness mean that my abilities are the only limits. I have never felt as if the bike were holding me back or causing problems. Great frame and the Trek warranty mean that I can upgrade and keep on riding. Paid about $1000 (including upgrades listed). Not sure what other forks are on bikes reviewed but the Manitou SX suits me fine. Can't say id it's right for everyone -- test rides really convinced me and I was lucky that Dave at Tenafly Bike Works (NJ) gave me a good sample of comparables to ride. First time MTBers should enjoy this bike. As I said above, it teaches good bike handling skills and does not punish you.

LBS (Tenafly Bike Works -- awesome shop -- Dave is a great guy) had me test ride a Kona, a Gary Fisher, and had already ridden Marin and C-dale. Price and performance sold me on the Trek.

wicked light, strong, turns ona dime, GREAT bike for any kind of riding, i raced this baby on dual slalom with different components a few times and it was sweet, i picked it up for 600 it was a demo and it was upgraded alot, its worth the 1200 even thoough i didnt pay it!!

comes witha crappy fork but if you didnt spend 1200 on it u can buy a new one i just put a judy race on it.. i used to change forks and parts when i would downhill with this frame but now i just change the wheels cranks brakes and pedals the judy race is awesome u should get that too

this bike is just plane great i recomend it to anyone this bike is so light and handles great even on the trickiest downhill ill give it 5 chilis cause i got if for 600

Crankshaft makes noises when peddling hard

It's a perfect bike is very light weight and has perfect handling. For a price of F 2400 ,- (1200 USD) it's the best bike you can get in the Netherlands. I had to get used to the color layout ( A little bit to agressive) but I start to like it now. The Bike is perfect for climbing en has perfect control in a steep descent. The front suspension is a bit stiff but works well when riding over big bumbs. The crankshaft makes creking noises but this doesn't effect the performance until now. I would recomment this bike to any body especially large people like my (1.90m). So I give this bike 5 stars

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed. The production of flax plays an important role too. Agricultural development of the territory is not high (about 48%). In general, it has about 25% of all agricultural land in Western Siberia.

Your phone acts as a receiver for satellite data. The time it takes for each of the satellite signals to reach the receiver are measured in relation to each other and to the speed of light. Because each of the satellites is in a different place, the three signals can be used to estimate a three dimensional position and can determine your position on the Earth to an extremely high degree of accuracy.

Using this site you can determine elevation for any location in the world, whether you are there or not. Simply enter an address anywhere in the world and you will be given its elevation in either feet or meters.

Peaks Atlas

Our peaks atlas has a list of cities in the United States to help you find the nearby mountains for any location in the country. You can also search for any location on Earth.

Wow....thats some old skool parts. I haven't seen a black softride like that before! Some of it doesn't make sense though. Why would the original owner change the rear derailleur? Plus I don't like the purple seatpost....kinda tacky...unless it was a Ringle!

I don't understand the 105 derailleur either and I agree, the ano parts make the bike look like an Easter egg. Oh well, the cannibalization will start soon.

Strip-and-flips of that type of bike are great--no guilt, and it holds most of its value even with the high-end pieces swapped out. In this area, you could replace all of the components on that bike with some solid STX or Alivio stuff, and still easily get about $200 for it on Craigslist (Philly in Springtime= campus special). That's a nice pick up.

The wheels may be stock. In 90/91, Trek's higher end bikes had Bullseye hubs, Grafton brakes, Easton bars and American stems.

Wait till MTBR see's what I have lurking....I should have it in about a week! I scored big time on it. Just need a buddy to come through! I have another project involving a Trek 9200 (voted the worst bike by several members)! I just recently gassed the "donuts" and I am doing a retro/new bike build!

road rear derailleurs were very popular here in Italy for their lighter weight and quick shifts, especially when matched with a road cogset and microdrive chainrings..

They were popular here in canada, hell everywhere among the folks who could read a catalog for their better bikes at the time. A 105 derailleur was as light as an XT short cage but cost half as much. The ultegra was an ounce lighter for the same price and both the road derailleurs would still work with a 30T cog just fine.

Fantastic strip and flip for $250. Keep what you need. Road derailleurs on MTBs are for cool people!

Those bar ends look more like Control Stix to me.

Yeah...always saw road cassettes on MTB's back in the day but never saw road derailleurs on mtbs. I know alot of guys did road hubs but never derailleurs....I guess cost was a major factor! Definately rock the Control Stix...love those....still have a pair of my own!

It is entirely plausible that the front wheel from an 8900 ended up on that 8000 at the dealer it was sold from. Many dealers will "borrow" a wheel from a bike off the floor to do a repair in a hurry, figuring they'll replace it later. Do that enough times with enough bikes and you end up having to scavenge parts to re-assemble the completes to sell. At a shop I worked at a few years ago, they brought in a Rocky Mountain Element Tribal SE frame which the owner claimed it for himself since it was the correct size and he needed a mountain bike because his gf was primarily a mountain biker at the time (he has long been a roadie for 95% of his riding). So he ordered the same size Element 50 as a complete to swap the parts over onto the tribal. Then we took apart a GT Avalanche Pro to get the parts to rebuild the Element, and then the parts from a Avalanche 1.0 moved onto the Pro frame, and then one of the mechanics ended up buying the Avalanche 1.0 frame.

Ah yes, for sure (even because this one sports Matrix rims and black hubs). I was just pointing out that the 1992 8000 mounted DX hubs as stock parts.

The front suspension is a bit stiff but works well when riding over big bumbs. The crankshaft makes creking noises but this doesn't effect the performance until now.
