Star Trek Fan Film Wrap-Up: Farragut Finale Episode w/Stan Lee + Successful Renegades Kickstarter + Star Trek Continues New Engine Room and Global Accolade Awards

It seems like the golden era for Star Trek fan films, with more great content coming out now than ever before. This week, Starship Farragut began the Kickstarter campaign for their finale episode, “Homecoming”, Star Trek Renegades successfully completed their Kickstarter , earning $378,181 for episodes 2 & 3, and Star Trek Continues won four Global Accolade Awards – three for “Divided We Stand” and one for “The White Iris”.

Starship Farragut debuts Kickstarter for finale episode Homecoming After 10 years of episodes, the Starship Farragut team is finally raising funds to film their final episode, after which they will fast forward to 10 years in the future where new episodes, part of “Farragut Forward”, will be set in the Wrath of Khan TOS movie era. They have a couple of pretty exciting cameos lined up, too, including the one and only Stan Lee!

Star Trek Renegades successfully funds episodes 2 & 3 in latest Kickstarter After their first successful film, the Star Trek Renegades team has raised funds to film episodes 2 & 3, which will be one two-parter and has been announced as Walter Koenig’s final performance as the character Pavel Chekov. The group surpassed their goal of $350,000 in 30 days, with donations totaling $378,181 from 3,379 backers. The episodes are set to go into production in early 2016, with the first of the two being finished in the summer of next year.

Star Trek Continues gets new engine room + 4 Global Accolade Awards Star Trek Continues has added to it’s already incredible TOS Enterprise sets. With the help of 2,619 backers, the STC team raised enough money to fund two episodes (currently in production) and build two new sets: Scotty’s engine room and a planet set. Well, the engine room is complete, and boy is it beautiful!

In addition, the team was just honored with four Global Accolade Awards for their two most recent episodes, “Divided We Stand” and “The White Iris”. Congrats to the whole team!

Looks like they are giving her all they’ve got. Warp Speed to your destination!

DIck Dyzel! Count Gore DeVol! LOLOL I used to watch him every Saturday night on Channel 20 – Creature Feature! That show was a hoot………

Star Trek Renegades only funded one episode not to two. Please correct as to not interfere with future crowd funding efforts.

We need to see some comparison shots between STC’s Engineering set and the one being built by Star Trek: New Voyages.

Can’t believe that

Renegades didn’t get much appreciation around these parts, but I actually found it enjoyable enough, apart from some excessively long action scenes. The premise is simple, but compelling. The execution left much room for improvement, but I found it watchable, which is more than I can say for quite a few Voyager episodes, for example. The acting was solid all around, which one would expect from the number of professional actors (many of them Trek vets) in the cast. All in all, I found Renegades enjoyable and compelling enough to be interested in a sequel. But the sequel really needs to improve upon the original. My advice to the makers of Renegades: (1) Make the action scenes shorter and sweeter. On a relatively low budget, action scenes are not your wheelhouse. (2) When writing the narrative, have the main theme in mind and involved somehow in the story from the very beginning. For example, if the main theme is related to sacrifice, as I believe it was in the first installment, start setting it up subtly at the outset—such as with a certain character’s failings or concerns.

Farragut typically has some really good writing (though not in the last episode), but the acting is very hard to sit through. When people stereotype fan films has having unwatchably poor acting, there’s no rebutting them when it comes to Farragut . The last episode actually had very impressive production values, but the acting totally dragged it down. I’m sorry to be so direct, but Broughton really belongs on the other side of the camera exclusively. As head of the production company, his accomplishments are impressive. But, if he wants people to enjoy his productions, he really needs to get someone passably competent to play the lead. To quote Harry Callahan in Magnum Force , “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

I was actually very disappointed by Divided We Stand . I don’t know what the point of that story was supposed to be. One of the aspects of STC that I love most is that their stories are typically theme-driven and impart some sort of meaning. Divided We Stand was the first STC episode so far to be lacking in depth of meaning. I found the story boring and was left somewhat bewildered when it ended without trying to make some sort of point or to justify its existence. Hopefully the next STC episode will get back to the winning formula that we saw in Lolani and Fairest of Them All .

Thanks for the coverage of Starship Farragut, Kayla! This promises to be a game-changing episode!!

re: 7. Cygnux-X1

I agree with you. I was also disappointed with DWS for your stated reasons. I was especially disappointed since it followed such a strong episode. The White Iris, I felt, was particularly powerful. I haven’t gotten that emotional over a Star Trek Episode since… Well, I actually can’t remember. But I will admit that TWI holds a special place in my heart, since I am the father of a young daughter myself.

I have yet to enjoy a single Star Trek fan film. I’ve watched a number of them, hoping to find one I can really get into. But the acting in most of them is so amateurish that it always knocks me out of it.

RENEGADES is just godawful.

I think Renegades siad that they would only do one more episode. That was decided after CBS announcement and after the crowdfunding started. It will probably be a longer episode, but not two.

As far as I can see, STC has built only one side of the engine room. How is that a full set that was promised in the Fundraiser?

What’s Renegades? :P

I watched a Honest review on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBwkGhIikjQ And he said it’s bad. I trust Blunty, couse he ist geniunly honest in hes reviews.

How cool is that: STAN LEE (of “Avengers” fame) as an Admiral on Star Trek! (Above image) He has cameos in every one of the films based on his creations, and now he’s on ‘Trek. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER, Stan!

But we all know that Stan Lee’s favorite starship is the EXCELSIOR!

(Someone had to say it.)

Apparently, Admiral McCann is also allergic to Retinax 5.

It’s even better in person!!

Stay tuned (early 2016) to see the engine room in action!

I think at this point, Stan Lee doesn’t even remember what he created. He’ll just cameo in any nerdy thing he’s invited to, just to be on the safe side.

The lighting, costuming, acting, writing, and directing of Renegades was horrible. Sad because there were multiple seasoned actors and Tim Russ is no rookie when it comes to directing. I really dont understand who was drunk or what went wrong with this project.

Sounds great Chris.

@18 Chris Doohan. I once met your father passing through an airport many years ago. He was sitting by himself in an empty boarding area and I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him. I hesitated to approach him, but when he noticed me, he smiled and waved me over. We chatted for a few minutes–as much as I could being totally star struck. He was gracious and kind and I’ll never forget that encounter.

It’s a thrill to have you posting in the community, interacting with the fans, and making fan fiction. You’re carrying on your father’s legacy while creating your own. I just wanted to say a big “Thank You!”

Renegades was sooo bad. And they just crowdfunded almost $400,00. for more episodes…wow…really exploiting Walter Koenig and now Nichelle Nichols. Sad. Well, somebody is making money, too bad it isn’t invested into the quality of the production. Can’t say I’m surprised, Conway was behind the horrific of Gods and Men.

My biggest problem with Renegades wasn’t it’s production values, which I didn’t think was THAT bad in the grand scheme of things. It was the story. The whole idea of the show, it misses the whole spirit of Trek. The sense of exploration. Raising an issue to ponder. The things Trek does when it’s at it’s best. That’s why it failed for me.

That said, I have read messages from their team on Trekbbs and they seem to be willing to listen to criticism and adapt accordingly, which is refreshing compared to some of the arrogance coming out of other productions (who I won’t mention).

I’m more than a little bit surprised that Star Trek: Excelsior’s 50th Anniversary Kickstarter didn’t get a mention — Nichelle Nichols is going to be in it, as is Walter Koenig if they can raise enough money in the waning days of their Kickstarter.

Renegades reminded me of the cut scenes from 1990s PC games. I think Tim Russ is a wonderful actor, but I think the best thing for that series would be to get someone else behind the camera.

Hey Chris Doohan. Care for a Game of Fisbin.

LeVar Burton Talks ‘Roots,’ ‘Star Trek’ & Strangest Fan Encounter

LeVar Burton

LeVar Burton is a Hollywood institution (and a very cool guy).

Spreading the love of reading for decades as host of Reading Rainbow , keeping Trekkies of the world glued to the screen during his time on Star Trek: The Next Generation , and blowing us all away in his breakout role as Kunta Kinta in the 1977 miniseries Roots , Burton’s talent has really stood the test of time (and genre).

Most recently, he played himself opposite Laurence Fishburne ’s Doc Rivers in the FX limited series, Clipped , and he’s already onto his next project: being the host of the new CW reality competition series premiering Oct. 7 at 9pm, Trivial Pursuit . We recently sat down to talk about how nerds have taken over the world, his weirdest fan encounter, and what he still has from the set of Roots (among other things).

LIGHT-YEARS BEYOND “just” a fan film, FARRAGUT FORWARD still needs YOUR help to hit $50K!

star trek fan films farragut

You’d think $37,745 would be enough money to make a single Star Trek fan film, right? And in most cases, you’d be 100% correct. But when it comes to FARRAGUT FORWARD , well, there’s Star Trek fan films and then there’s BLOW-YOUR-FRIGGIN’-MIND Star Trek fan films!!! And Farragut Forward certainly falls into the latter category.

With one shoot still to go scheduled for this fall, the team just wrapped filming on one of the most ambitious bridge sets ever constructed for a Star Trek fan film. This followed other major shoots in starship corridors, sickbay, and a Klingon bird-of-prey…each with equally amazing sets and costumes of the highest caliber. Beyond just impeccable monster maroons and Klingon outfits, they also recreated the most detailed cadet jumpsuits, command jackets, white medical uniforms, and even the engineering radiation suits from the 80s and 90s Star Trek feature films!

Back in February of 2022, showrunner JOHN BROUGHTON and director JOHNNY K. launched an Indiegogo campaign with a goal of $30K. They ultimately exceeded that goal, meaning the campaign shifted to “InDemand” status and could continue raising donations indefinitely. And since then, they’ve added a few thousand dollars more. But they’re currently trying to take their total up to the $50K level…the maximum allowed by the fan film guidelines.

With all of the sets built, costumes created, and 80% of the footage shot, why are they looking for even MORE money now? The short answer is that they’ve spent way more of their own money than they ever expected to…well into the many thousands of dollars. And it shows! Don’t worry, if they don’t hit their $50K stretch goal, Farragut Forward will still be completed and released. But with this kind of quality, I’m hopeful that fans can help pitch in just a little bit more to ease the burden on the Farragut Films team’s wallets.

Star Trek Picard Actor Says 2 Characters Were Supposed To Have Game of Thrones-Like Incestuous Relationship

The star trek movie franchise is finally available to stream for free, the real villain of harry potter wasn't voldemort.

Star Trek has seen a lot of bold and interesting creative choices in its time, but one tectonic shift in the approach to how the franchise’s projects come together has fallen through, and now fans get more details on what really happened.

Star Trek has enjoyed more longevity than most other franchises, with new shows emerging after Star Trek: The Original Series one after the other, giving fans all sorts of different views on the future world of the Federation. While Star Trek movies would be made intermittently, these feature-length projects would become the main focus of the franchise after it was eventually rebooted by Paramount. After three films, the franchise has circled back to the point of Star Trek: The Next Generation , with fans unsure where the film series will go from here, and the focus is shifted back to the small screen.

One Star Trek Picard star shared that two characters in the series were supposed to have a relationship like that of Jaime and Cersei Lannister.

While Star Trek is getting its most unique project by way of a planned TV sitcom for Paramount+, there was one rumored development that would’ve certainly given that show a run for its money. After the third entry in the rebooted film franchise, it was announced that a fourth film was on the way in 2016. While there was no clear idea what direction the franchise would be going in following that point, it became known that Hollywood icon Quentin Tarantino was dreaming up a Star Trek project, and a writer was even attached to develop a script based on Tarantino’s idea, getting fans geared up for an R-Rated take on the often lofty franchise. "It's never going to happen," Tarantino revealed to Bill Maher when the proposed film came up in a recent podcast interview . "There's been so much misinformation about what it was going to be - nothing but misinformation. I live in a special zone and part of my zone is because I'm not on Instagram and Facebook, I'm not creating this constant dialogue with the world with what's going on with my life."

Consequently, if you're Joe Schlomoka and you're some transient reporter of some kind, if you hear Quentin is going to make a Star Trek movie or a make a movie called The Movie Critic, or any f--king thing, it's a little bit like that guy who wrote the Howard Hughes biography that ended up being a hoax," Tarantino continued. "The thing is, they can say anything… My point being though, they write it in a show biz magazine and then that gets picked up in 140 pieces because I'm not shutting that down because I'm not connected.

Tarantino’s comments put the final nail in the coffin for the idea that he’ll ever helm a Star Trek film, but fans will have to turn elsewhere to understand the why. Mark L. Smith, who developed a script based on Tarantino’s ideas for his Star Trek movie, revealed that the director had “started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films." This refers to Tarantino’s insistence that he will only direct ten films in his career, a number that he only falls short of due to a few oddities in his reckoning, like not counting short films and considering both volumes I and II of Kill Bill as one film. Clarifying, Smith added, "I remember we were talking, and he goes, 'If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie, the last thing I ever do. Is this how I want to end it?' And I think that was the bump he could never get across, so the script is still sitting there on his desk." While there’s a lot of potential in Tarantino directing a Trek film, many would agree that something like Kill Bill 3 would be a more fitting final film for him.

Fans of Star Trek might be out of luck on that end, but there’s more to look forward to with the franchise. In addition to an incoming sitcom, there might be a collaboration between Trek and Doctor Who, with Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies spurring on a potentially amazing sci-fi crossover between the two . With enough time, fans might even get that R-Rated Trek film.

The Star Trek franchise is available to stream on Paramount+.

Star Trek is a space exploration franchise originally created by Gene Roddenberry. The series has spanned shows like The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Voyager. More recently, developer Scopely came out with Star Trek Fleet Command, a mobile title where you get to be captain of your own ship.

Star Trek's long line of films have never been easier to get at, and new fans of the franchise can dive in and binge them all.

Behind the Scenes of Farragut Forward (Prologue)! | Star Trek Fan Film

On January 27, 2022, Farragut Films and Kaotica Studios premiered the prologue to Farragut Forward (a Star Trek Fan Production) on YouTube, and we we’ve been blown away by the positive response!

UPDATE: Farragut Forward is now funding on INDIEGOGO !

This article contains spoilers, so before we get started, watch the three-minute prologue and give it a LIKE!:

The fan response has been amazing! Some of our favorite comments are posted below:

  • This is AMAZING!!!. You took a quantum leap in your uniforms and lighting. I really feel like I was watching a Hollywood short.
  • A spectacular return Farragut team, beautifully shot and designed. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
  • Love the meticulous detail on the uniforms…
  • What a wonderful job you guys have done! So excited to watch this! I’ve been watching Discovery and thinking how much I missed the “old” Klingons – it’s so wonderful to see the best of Trek given new life
  • It’s Star Trek back on track…!!! Hail movie era…!!

Farragut Forward not only marks the collaboration between Kaotica Studios and Farragut Films, but also the continuation of the long-running Starship Farragut fan series into the “movie era” of 1980s Star Trek! The Starship Farragut series is one of the longest-running and most successful Star Trek fan productions, tracing its roots back nearly 20 years.

Love those “monster maroon” uniforms? So do we, and we couldn’t wait to get them on screen!

Pre-production on the prologue launched in summer 2021. At that time, several key decisions were made on the production’s tone and visual style, including the costumes, sets, lighting, and an emphasis on filming practical ship models as an homage to the 1980s era of sci-fi filmmaking, and to the early days of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM).

Fans can expect a more ‘sophisticated’ version of Farragut…  a darker, more serious side.  After a camera/lighting test, (director) Johnny K. said, “This isn’t your Daddy’s Farragut!”  He’s right, and my expectation is that our fanbase will be highly impressed, wanting to see more with new fans following.

– Executive Producer John Broughton

With the actors prepared and the set constructed, production kicked off in October 2021. The cast (particularly Michael Bednar who plays Tacket) underwent heavy makeup to show “battle-damage,” and with costumes heavily distressed, courtesy of costume and makeup assistants Belle Bredehoft and Ashley Mills.

star trek fan films farragut

The single set was a very small room (roughly 10′ by 10′), which was packed full of lights, gear, smoke, and at some points, as many as 10 actors and crew.  Filming was originally planned for two days, but thanks to the hard work of the cast and crew, production wrapped in a single 12-hour day, including a full set rebuild halfway through.

star trek fan films farragut

The three-minute prologue was a lot of work crammed into a very tight production period. It took many of our actors several hours to get into their costumes, prosthetics, and makeup, so instead of coming back and doing it all over again on the second day of filming, everyone pushed to wrap the shoot in a single day. We even tore the set down at lunch and rebuilt it for the turnaround shots. It made for a very long day, in a very cramped set, but the results were well worth it. In fact, after we wrapped, no one left, and we transitioned immediately into an impromptu wrap party!  – Director Johnny K.

star trek fan films farragut

The prologue was shot in 6K on a Blackmagic 6KPro Cinema Camera with Sigma lenses.

With principal photography concluding in October, editing began and a rough-cut screening was held for the cast and crew in November 2021, with everyone seeing it for the first time together as a group.  Sound design and visual effects shots were added and finalized soon after, including the filming of the practical Bird-of-Prey ship model, built by actor and model-maker Michael Bednar.

THE CAST: The Farragut Forward prologue marks the return of prominent characters from the Farragut universe, including John Broughton as Carter and Michael Bednar as Tacket. Paul Sieber reprises his role as the evil “mirror” version of Prescott. William Jay,  Dale Henry, and Matt Henry play Klingon officers.

THE MUSIC: The Farragut Forward prologue features the track “War Drums” by Rhythm Scott, as well as music by Austrian composer Martin Puehringer.

WHAT’S NEXT? With the story’s prologue now released, preproduction moves forward on the full episode of Farragut Forward, currently scheduled to be filmed in summer 2022.

‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Video Game Star Humberly González on Being the First Latina Lead in Franchise History and Hopes for a TV Adaptation

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm’s open-world video game “Star Wars Outlaws” launched Friday, giving fans of the galaxy far, far away a chance to play as a new character, Kay Vess (voiced by “Tarot” and “Star Trek: Section 31” star Humberly González) in a story set in between the events of the original film trilogy’s “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

This new lead isn’t a Jedi or Sith, a rebel or an Imperial sympathizer — she’s a scoundrel trying to survive the crime-ridden “Star Wars” universe with little to no knowledge of the crime syndicates that rule and no one but a little sidekick companion named Nix to help her out.

Ubisoft Promotes Cécile Russeil to Executive Vice President

'Star Wars Outlaws' Launch Date Set, Trailer Released

'Star Wars Outlaws' to Release Before End of Year, 'Assassin's Creed Codename Red' Will Launch by March 2025, Ubisoft CEO Says

“It is such a fun timeline, and I know this from the creative team — Nikki Foy, the lead script writer, and Navid Khavari, who is our narrative director, when this opportunity came to them and they found out the timeline that they were going to be playing in was in the original trilogy between ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi,’ I think everybody was in shock,” González told Variety . “And they always say, ‘We got out of there before they changed their mind,’ because this is a dream timeline. It is a time where the crime syndicates are thriving. The underbelly of ‘Star Wars’ is rampant. So insert this new scoundrel story where she’s a young girl that isn’t a Jedi. She’s not a Sith. She doesn’t want to belong to anybody, not the rebels, not the Empire. She simply has a dream of getting rich and being free out there in the galaxy. She doesn’t know what that means, but we get to explore with her through her rookie ways of becoming this incredible scoundrel, but not having the experience like the ones we’ve seen portrayed in ‘Star Wars’ before, like Lando Calrissian and Han Solo. She is different because she doesn’t have that experience. So getting to explore the underworld with someone who doesn’t know the dangers of it is very exciting.”

González, who not only lent her voice to Kay Vess, but also did the full-body motion capture for the video game character, says she influenced the way the character was ultimately portrayed through her own ideas about who Kay should be.

“I know that when she was first crafted, they were making her a bit more cynical, a bit more snappy and sassy, but me coming in meant I wanted to bring more vulnerability to her — the cracks in the shield, the flaws that she had to have composure through, and that, to me, that makes her so complex, so layered,” González said. “Because if she’s a rookie, how does that show up in the world, and what is she learning? And so we got to experience this timeline in ‘Star Wars’ that everybody knows so well, but through fresh eyes, a new point of view. What happens when Kay Vess is meeting face to face with Jabba the Hutt, who we know runs one of the baddest crime syndicates out there? She has no idea who he is. It’s a very fun experience to input this rookie scoundrel in a world that we so know and it’s so dangerous.”

Kay is also unique in the “Star Wars” universe in that the character is the first Latina lead in the history of the franchise. This fact is a huge point of pride for González, who was born in Venezuela, who says she has met Latinx fans at preview events who have tears in their eyes over seeing themselves portrayed in “Outlaws.”

“I met this young girl who came dressed as Kay Vess. She built everything herself. She created the classic bomber leather blue jacket that Kay Vess wears, and track pants, the boots, she had her hair done, and the makeup. She even had this backpack, and it was Nix,” González said. “I was in awe, because it was a moment in real time of how important representation is — and especially having female protagonists in the gaming industry. There can be so much toxicity, a lot of misogyny, a lot of just trolls on the internet, that when women enter this space, there can be a lot of sexism, even though there is so much creativity and expertise when it comes to women in the field. And this young girl came to me and just said, ‘I have been waiting for a project like this for so long, for me to play as a strong female lead and explore an open world.’ And she just wanted to thank me. We were both in tears because I said it means just as much for me because I didn’t grow up seeing myself represented on screen, and being a Latina and being the lead of one of the biggest franchises in our time, means so much. That was a moment that made me realize the magnitude of what we’re doing and what it means for me to enter this franchise.”

González spoke with Variety about starring in “Star Wars Outlaws” amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA video game actors strike , which began July 26. While the Ubisoft-developed “Star Wars Outlaws” is exempt from the work stoppage and not among the struck titles, González addressed the central issue behind the strike for herself and other actors, which is increased protections surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), and how she believes her work as Kay Vess proves the importance of the issue.

“I love this job so much, I would love to keep doing it for many years to come. I think it’s important to fight for our rights, to respect the actors’ craft, and I hope that with the actors on the picket line and bringing these issues to the front, that they realize that no AI could ever take over what a real human can do,” González said. “I feel so blessed to be able to play Kay Vess, because what infuses her is my own experience of growing up in Venezuela and being an immigrant. Leaving everything behind, starting over and me following my own dream, which is such a big parallel to Kay Vess, having grown up the way she did, coming from nothing, and having this idea of what freedom is and what it means for her. So when it comes to that, I will always be on the side of, let’s protect our rights.”

González who recently wrapped the Paramount+ film “Star Trek: Section 31” starring alongside Michelle Yeoh (yes, she’s aware of the unique nature of her starring in competing iconic space franchises) is currently in production on the third season of Netflix’s “Ginny & Georgia” would love to take her acting as Kay Vess one step further with a TV adaptation of “Star Wars Outlaws.”

“I think it would be incredible to see Kay Vess in live action, because one thing that we don’t see in animation is those micro expressions of a real human being on screen,” González said. “And it would be incredible for me to experience what it would be like to be literally in her costume, in her appearance, her likeness, in the landscape, to see her interact with real characters, the creatures. It would be a dream come true. I certainly would not say no to the opportunity. And I think there’s so many opportunities to see Kay Vess and other aspects of established roles in ‘Star Wars,’ because we’re in the original trilogy, and there’s so many opportunities for her to exist or show up and in different places. So it would be amazing, and I think fans would love it.”
