Is An Ocean View Cabin Worth It? Pros & Cons

As cruise prices are rising, you might be wondering if oceanview cabins are worth it. These economical cabins are more expensive than inside rooms, but often much cheaper than balcony cabins.

The truth is that we rarely talk about ocean view cabins. While these ocean view rooms have their pros and cons, they might be worth considering on a future cruise.

I’ve been on over 30 cruises and have cruised in interior staterooms, balconies and an occasional mini suite. However, on a recent last-minute cruise we opted for an ocean view cabin. This cabin was about half the price of a balcony and approximately $50 more than an interior cabin (for a four day cruise).

While ocean view cabins might not be right for everyone, here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of booking this unique cruise cabin .

Pros of Booking an Ocean View Cabin

Typically, an ocean view cabin is much cheaper than a balcony cabin and only a bit more expensive than an interior cabin . As someone who has sailed in an interior, ocean view, and balcony stateroom, I can say that having an ocean view was a great experience.

If you’re used to booking balcony cabins but looking for a more economical way to cruise, an ocean view cabin is a money saver. Since I don’t spend much time in my cabin, I found my ocean view stateroom to be a great value.

When considering your options for an ocean view cabin, comparing the cost a good idea. If the ocean view stateroom falls within the same price range as an interior cabin, it’s a decision that’s definitely worth the extra investment. The added value of waking up to an amazing ocean view is worth the price!

Natural Light

One of the benefits of booking an ocean view cabin is the natural light. Compared to an interior cabin, ocean view cabins provide natural light and stunning views of the ocean, such as the sight of marine life in the ocean or a stunning sunset over the horizon.

While inside cabins are a budget-friendly option, they do have a big drawback – the lack of natural light.

This can make it difficult to gage the weather or the time of day. However, with an ocean view cabin, you have the practical advantage of natural daylight, which eliminates these uncertainties.

Furthermore, walking into your stateroom and viewing the ocean is always great. It’s also nice to sit with a book and relax by your ocean view window.

Unique Point of View

When booking an ocean view stateroom, you’ll get a unique view of the ocean.

In contrast to a balcony cabin, ocean view cabins are on cruise ships’ lower decks, making them closer to the water. Being closer to the water is a unique experience, as the waves are only a few meters from your ocean view window.

On my last Royal Caribbean cruise , the thrill of seeing the waves up close from my ocean view stateroom was a great experience. In contrast, a balcony cabin offers a great view of the ocean, but the experience is different as you’re higher up on the cruise ship, further away from the waves.

Whether you prefer to be closer to the ocean or further away from it, experiencing the up-close view from an ocean view cabin is certainly an amazing experience.

Size of Cabin

One of the key advantages of booking an ocean view cabin is that it usually is a similar size to a standard balcony cabin. Take, for example, the Oasis of the Seas , where both the ocean view cabins and the balcony cabins are a comfortable 180 square feet . The only difference is that the balcony cabin provides an extra 50 square feet of outdoor space.

When you take into account that a balcony cabin can be nearly double the price of an ocean view cabin, the fact that they offer the same stateroom size makes an ocean view cabin an excellent value, ensuring you get the most out of your cruise experience. 

That said, cabins sizes can vary depending on the cruise line and the cruise ship. Before finalizing your stateroom, ensure that it is the ideal size for your cruise vacation needs.

Same Cruise Experience

A misconception that new cruisers often have is that the cruise experience will vary depending on your cabin type. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Whether you’re in an inside cabin, ocean view cabin, or balcony cabin, you will have the same cruise experience. Unless you are in a suite, you will have access to the same services, amenities, activities, venues, and entertainment options.

Cons of Booking an Ocean View Cabin

Cabin location.

One of the trade-offs of choosing an ocean view stateroom is its location. Typically, these cabins are situated on the lower decks, which means you’ll be a bit further from the lido deck and promenade deck, potentially requiring more walking or time waiting for the elevators.

While there’s nothing wrong with being on deck 1, 2 or 3, some people prefer to be on higher decks.

Many cruise ships also have forward facing oceanview cabins. These rooms are often a bit larger than average. However, being in the front of the ship is considered to be one of the worst cabin locations by many.

For those who prioritize convenience, the middle decks are usually the most suitable. However, it’s important to note that these decks are often reserved for interior, balcony, mini-suite staterooms and suites.

One undeniable advantage of being on a lower deck is the reduced risk of motion sickness . As a general rule, the lower you are on the cruise ship, the less you’ll feel the motion of the ocean. 

This can be a significant comfort factor for many travelers, especially those who are prone to seasickness.

Window Does Not Open

This might seem obvious if you’ve cruised before. However, first-time cruisers may be surprised by this to know that the windows inside an ocean view cabin do not open!

If you’re a cruiser who enjoys the natural ocean breeze, you prefer may prefer a balcony cabin. However, if you don’t plan on spending much time in your cabin, there are plenty of places around the cruise ship where you can enjoy a similar experience.

Not Ideal for Watching The Ocean

In my experience, an ocean view cabin is not ideal for watching the ocean. On our recent Royal Caribbean cruise, the window was behind the bed, so sitting down and looking into the water wasn’t particularly comfortable.

While I appreciated an ocean view cabin’s abundance of natural light, the room configuration could have been better for looking into the ocean.

However, on some cruise lines, ocean-view cabins have panoramic windows and floor-to-ceiling windows. Therefore, it’s important to check on what kind of ocean view you are getting before finalizing your cabin selection.

Is an Ocean View Cabin Worth It?

When it comes to cruising, there are two types of passengers: those who spend a lot of time in their cabin and those who don’t.

If you prefer to spend time around the cruise ship instead of inside your cabin, you will enjoy an ocean view cabin. For the price, an ocean view cabin offers tremendous value, serving as the perfect upgrade from an inside cabin.

If you’re a cruiser who enjoys spending time in your cabin and having your own outdoor space, then you’ll prefer a balcony cabin. The feeling of staring out of your ocean view window doesn’t compare to relaxing outside on your balcony.

However, balcony staterooms can be quite pricey, making ocean view cabins a solid value and a great middle-ground between interior and balcony staterooms.

Ultimately, the value of ocean view cabins shines through when they are in the same price range as an interior cabin. If an ocean view cabin is priced similarly to a balcony cabin, then you may want to consider investing the extra money in the balcony stateroom for an enhanced cruising experience .

Final Thoughts On Is An Ocean View Cabin Worth It?

While there are certainly several pros and cons to sailing in an ocean view cabin, one undeniable advantage is their affordability. An ocean view cabin offers a great value, serving as a comfortable middle ground between an interior cabin and a balcony cabin.

Ultimately, the decision to book an ocean view cabin or not rests on your personal preferences, desires and needs.

If you’re the type who doesn’t spend much time in your cabin and appreciates the natural light, then an ocean view cabin might be your best bet. On the other hand, if you value your personal space and enjoy the luxury of relaxing outdoors, a balcony cabin could be the perfect choice for you.

NCL Sun Picture Window Oceanview Cabin Tour and Review

INTRODUCTION

While I’m not known for brevity, I’m going to keep this one short. Why? When it seems like I love droning on about cruises almost as much as sailing on them (NOT TRUE, for the record – if you take me on all your cruises with you, I promise never to write about them again)? Because this was my second time on the Norwegian Sun in just a few weeks and almost everything I want to say about this oceanview cabin, I’ve already said about my prior inside cabin. So to avoid sounding like educational programing for toddlers (i.e. excruciating repetitive), I’ll just highlight the things that were unique about my oceanview cabin and refer you to my prior review, equal parts lengthy, charming, and helpful (I’m comfortable guaranteeing only one of those three adjectives). Here’s the prior review:

Norwegian Sun Inside Cabin Tour and Review

Three weeks and a baker’s dozen eye rolls later (I used to teach college students – I’m immune to not-so-subtle gestures of annoyance), let’s move on to my oceanview cabin.

A TOUR OF A PICTURE WINDOW OCEANVIEW CABIN ON THE NCL SUN

First, note that there are three types of oceanview cabins on the Norwegian Sun: large porthole oceanview cabins, obstructed oceanview cabins, and picture window oceanview cabins. Mine was a picture window oceanview cabin (category OA) located on deck 7 forward. Here’s a tour:

A REVIEW OF MY OCEANVIEW CABIN ON THE NCL SUN

Like my prior interior cabin on the Sun, I loved the contemporary decor in shades of blue and gray, the USB outlets on either side of the bed, the mini-fridge, and the flat screen TV.

And I still didn’t love the institutional looking all-white bathroom and “hair dryer.”

I wore a bright colored shirt every time I had to pee because I was afraid I might blend in so well with my surroundings (I come in a similar shade of white) that I might just become part of the walls. Either that or get sucked into the abyss by that alien-looking contraption on the wall (I figured a distinct shirt might make it easier for my mom to describe me to ship security: “She was wearing a red shirt and a look of terror.”). For better or worse, I stopped fearing the hair dryer after my first use, noting that it was as weak as the prior one and feeling thankful for packing my own this time.

But there were a few things that made this cabin distinct from my prior interior one, the most obvious being the picture window:

I enjoyed the natural light and view of the outside. However, surprisingly, I wouldn’t book an oceanview over an interior again. What?!?! Why, you ask? Because this cabin was considerably smaller, had less storage, and had a large chair instead of a full-sized sofa. I also didn’t care for the placement of the window over the bed.

Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad cabin (is there even such a thing?) and it worked just fine for mom and me, but I paid more for it and, on balance, feel like I got less.

One more thing to note. Most of the picture window oceanview cabins on the Sun are located on deck 7 forward. Also located on deck 7 forward? The youth and teen clubs. If you’re sensitive to noice and easily annoyed by obnoxious spawn (I can only call them that because I have one), I’d avoid these cabins. However, I will say that it made me extra thankful to be cruising with just my mom who doesn’t run or yell, let alone do those two things at the same time while dripping ice cream down her shirt. And with that…

Inside vs. outside cabin: Which affordable cruise room is best for you?

Balcony cabins might be the most popular, but travelers looking to save when booking a cruise are likely deciding whether to choose an inside or an outside cabin. These cabin categories offer the most affordable cruise fares. But you'll need to decide if you can handle an interior room with no porthole or need an exterior cabin with a window to the world.

Do you lose anything by not having a window to the outside world on a cruise? The answer depends on your travel style and budget. Here's a guide to shed some light (literally) on the top two value options of cruising that will help keep your spending at bay while your ship's at sea.

The similarities between inside and outside cabins

Inside and outside cabins do not differ much beyond the view. Both types feature a bed (either one queen or two twins), a small desk/vanity area and your own private en suite bathroom.

You'll find the same onboard amenities in both interior and exterior cabins, including basic toiletries (soap and shampoo), linens, towels, minifridge, hair dryer, cabin safe, phone, cabin climate control, in-cabin television and access to the ship's Wi-Fi and room service.

You'll also have free rein of all the ship's public spaces, including bars and lounges, pools and sun decks, spa and gym, and restaurants. Neither inside nor outside cabin occupants have access to private spaces — such as the exclusive lounges, restaurants and sun decks reserved for suite guests — unless you're a high-ranking loyalty program member on a ship with special clubs for frequent cruisers.

Depending on the cruise line, you can save even more by letting the cruise line assign your cabin versus picking the specific cabin and location you want.

Inside cabins are a great value play

The main distinguishing factor of an inside cabin is that it's not going to have a view of the sea through a porthole or window. A few ships have gotten creative with virtual windows (LED screens, designed to look like an actual window, that project a view from outside the ship into your room). Because most cruisers prefer a balcony, or at least a window, inside cabins are considered the least desirable cabin option.

Therefore, the cheapest way to cruise is generally in an inside cabin. On all big ships, the base rates you see are for interior rooms. Prices will typically increase for more desirable inside cabins with extra space or in a prime location, and rooms with windows or balconies.

Depending on the ship and the length of your cruise, opting for an interior room can save hundreds of dollars more than a room with a view. For shorter itineraries, like a two-night getaway on Royal Caribbean, you could find an ocean view for $50 more than an inside cabin, while on a seven-night Carnival cruise, you could find savings of $460 when opting for an inside over an outside.

Prices will vary by cruise line, ship, itinerary, the length of your journey and how far in advance you book your cruise, with more savings on the cost per night the longer you sail. While both of these cabin options are among the most affordable options on board, the cheaper inside cabin fares could mean the difference between sailing the high seas or waving bon voyage from the dock.

Top benefits of an interior cabin

Don't be fooled into thinking that inside cabins are awful. For the right cruisers with the right attitude, they can be the perfect option.

Inside rooms offer nearly the same amount of cabin space as ocean-view rooms. Both are much smaller than the hotel rooms you might be used to, but ship designers optimize the space to pack a lot in and make the rooms not feel cramped.

For light sleepers or those who appreciate nodding off without distraction, inside cabins feature the comfort of total darkness. Travelers report getting amazing sleep in these rooms. Just be sure to schedule a wake-up call and set an alarm so you don't miss out on any morning activities or excursions; you won't have any sunlight waking you up naturally.

Consider bringing your own night light, so you can find your way to the bathroom at night. Newer ships often feature "night mode" lighting in cabin bathrooms, offering a soft light on the floor for safely navigating your cabin when the lights are out.

Forget anything you saw in "Titanic"; inside cabin occupants are not considered a lower class of passengers. All non-suite guests are of equal importance on a cruise, regardless of your cabin's location.

Finally, if you're the type of person who spends their vacation time out and about on the ship and in port, only using the cabin to shower and sleep, the money you'll save booking the cheapest room can be used to pay for indulgent spa treatments or fun activities ashore, further enhancing your vacation. If you're on a super-tight budget, these cheap room types give you access to all the shipboard amenities — pools, multiple dining venues, onboard entertainment — so you can actually get away on an incredible tropical vacation.

What you miss without a view on a cruise

Of course, inside cabins do have drawbacks. With no exterior-facing window, you won't get any natural light in your room. This can be difficult for cruisers with sensitive circadian rhythms or who easily feel claustrophobic.

You'll also have no idea what's happening outside. You'll have to head to a public deck to bask in the sunlight or stargaze. Questions about the weather (Is it raining?) or the ship's location (Are we docked yet?) can at least be answered by the cabin TV.

The best inside cabins

Not all inside rooms are created equal, and there are a few cruise lines of note that have made the interior feel superior.

Royal Caribbean 's industry-leading Virtual Balcony cabin offers a real-time, full-wall LED screen that simulcasts the outside view and sounds. The interior screens can be found on select ships throughout Royal Caribbean's fleet.

Disney Cruise Line offers a similar touch in its inside cabins. The line's Magical Portholes offer a real-time simulcast view of the ship's surroundings via a circular screen tricked out to look like a ship's porthole. Linger long enough, and you'll find playful appearances from animated Disney characters.

Norwegian Cruise Line 's compact 100-square-foot single studios are perfect interior enclaves that are only available for solo travelers and priced accordingly (without the common single-supplement fee). These space-efficient staterooms utilize every inch of the cabin with a full-size bed, ample storage and an en suite bathroom. The best benefit of cruising in one of Norwegian's studios is access to the ship's Studio Lounge, where you'll find a nice opportunity to mingle with other single travelers.

The best benefits of an outside cabin

There's real romance in whiling the days away at sea, staring out at the endless ocean horizon, basking in the light of the sun or drifting to sleep under the glow of the moon. An outside cabin will offer either a circular porthole or rectangular picture window for your ocean-viewing pleasure.

Most cruisers enjoy the natural sunlight that pours into a small cabin through the window, but the view outside is hard to beat. You might spot dolphins, whales or birds right outside your cabin. If your cruise is traveling through any scenic routes (say Alaska or the Norwegian fjords), you can admire the vistas from bed without having to seek out a public deck. On port days, you're able to watch as the ship docks and get a lay of the land firsthand.

On some ships, you'll find the square footage of exterior cabins to be slightly larger than inside cabins, with cozy seating areas. Some even feature proper sitting spaces in front of the window, such as a built-in plush bench or an alcove in the recessed window.

The downsides of paying more for a window

Just because you've paid more for a view doesn't necessarily mean that view will be worth it. The location of the cabin will determine just how much you can see. If you're too close to sea level, the waves may perpetually douse the window. If your window is behind a lifeboat, you might not see much of anything at all. Partially obstructed or fully obstructed outside cabins will often get you a lower rate than rooms with better views.

Some cabins have a view of outdoor walkways or observation decks that are open to all guests on board; we've seen those on ships in Carnival's Vista class . Cabins facing public areas are tinted, so you're unable to see in during the day, but at night, passengers are encouraged to close their curtains for privacy.

Keep in mind that windows on cruise ship cabins do not open, so there's no opportunity to get any breeze of the fresh ocean air. If you prefer easy access to sea breezes and a private outdoor sitting space, you'll need to pay more for a cabin with a balcony.

In fact, private balconies have become so popular that new ships are being built with fewer window rooms. The ship designers add balconies to every outside cabin they can. If you want to sail on a new ship and save by booking an outside room instead of a balcony, you may have trouble finding available cabins unless you book early.

The best outside cabins

Virgin Voyages ' sea-view cabins are among the best-in-class porthole cabins. The rooms have a modern yet comfortable feel and offer a plush ledge for gazing out the porthole window.

Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class features three ocean-view options, starting with the budget-friendly standard ocean-view cabins with a porthole set behind a recessed sitting ledge. Consider a nominal upgrade in price to the line's deluxe ocean-view cabins (on some itineraries you'll pay just $47 more per person), where large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the room with light.

Bottom line: Inside vs. outside cabin

Whether an inside or outside cabin is best for you depends on how you intend to spend your time on the ship. Cruise lines excel at getting you out of your cabin and into the action on the ship or in the port. Schedules are filled with myriad activities in and around the ship to keep you occupied, so it is more than possible to use your cabin simply for sleeping.

When to choose an inside cabin

If you're deciding whether or not you can afford to sail, an inside cabin will give you the opportunity to take a vacation at sea and enjoy all the complimentary activities a cruise ship has to offer. Inside cabins are also best for travelers who love to sleep in total darkness or who spend little time in their rooms on board (and prefer to save their money for other travel expenses like drink packages or shore excursions).

When to choose an outside cabin

If you want a budget option for accessing ocean views and watching the world pass by from the comfort of your bed, an outside cabin is your best bet. Or, if you want natural light in your room but plan on taking in most of the scenic panoramas from the ship's upper decks with 360-degree views instead of your private balcony, an outside cabin will give you what you need without costing extra.

Regardless of which room you choose, you'll have access to all the amenities of your cruise ship — plus comfortable transportation to incredible destinations — for a more affordable price. In that way, you can't really go wrong.

After 20 Ocean Cruises, I Took My First River Cruise—Here Are 6 Ways It Was Better

I n 1995, when I was a freshman in college, my parents first introduced me to cruising. I absolutely loved waking up each morning on a new Caribbean island, and I thoroughly enjoyed the nonstop array of activities to keep me busy on our floating hotel. In my 30s, once I had a little disposable income, I was reintroduced to the world of cruise ships , and I fell in love with them all over again. Today, in my mid-40s, I write about cruising for a living and still completely adore itin fact, I recently completed my 20th ocean cruise.

But this year, I wanted to branch out. I had my sights set on scenic river cruising . It seemed so exclusive, so refined, so intimate, and everyone raves about their experiences. I had to know what I was missing. So my fianc and I booked a sailing for March 2024 called “Paris and the Heart of Normandy” on the Viking Radgrid , a round-trip river cruise from Paris that follows the iconic Seine river through Normandy villages, with stops that included Giverny (and the charming house and gardens where Claude Monet lived) and the legendary D-Day beaches along the Normandy coast.

The impetus for this particular itinerary? This year marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings during World War II, and I have a personal connection to itmy maternal grandfather was a Purple Heartawarded army medic in the 101st Airborne, who was wounded while attending to injured soldiers during the Normandy invasion.

As an avid ocean cruiser , I was excited about the opportunity to see this historic area through a river cruise. And despite my research ahead of time, I was still a bit surprised by some of the key differences between cruising the high seas vs. the river Seine. Most of them were actually preferable to ocean cruisingbut one wasn’t. Ahead, I’ve included everything you need to know about river cruises and the biggest differences you’ll find compared to ocean liners.

What’s the difference between a river cruise and an ocean cruise?

Unlike ocean cruise ships, which travel the open seas, river cruises travel along inland waters. River cruises are typically much smaller, as the vessels need to navigate smaller waterways and ports, which means fewer cabins and passengers as well. Ocean cruises often carry thousands of passengers (compared to hundreds of passengers on river cruises), and because there can be days at sea, the amenities (gyms, water parks, casinos, dozens of restaurants, live entertainment, kids clubs, etc.) tend to be extravagant. The river cruise is often a means of travel, while the destinations are the stars of the show.

The pros of a river cruise

There are quite a few pros in my book! These are the ways I believe river cruises stand out, compared to ocean liners.

All-inclusive experiences

One of my biggest gripes about cruising is that I often feel nickled and dimed to death. Even with the best all-inclusive ocean cruises , the final bill at the end of the sailing is always higher than you think it’s going to bethe drinks, specialty restaurants, excursions and Wi-Fi access can really add up. With Viking, almost everything was included in my upfront river-cruise feeit was actually all-inclusive.

Every guest receives free Wi-Fi, which was a huge relief, since I was also working while I cruised. The connection was limited to two devices at any given time, but we didn’t find this to be an issue. However, the Wi-Fi connection was a bit spotty at times, especially when we went through the locks.

Beer, wine and soft drinks were included during lunch and dinner. Liquor and higher-end wines cost extra, but there was a package you could purchase to help defray costs (called the Silver Spirits Beverage Package, which was $350 per cabin for a seven-day sailing trip). Other items included specialty coffees (the hot chocolate was to die for), teas and bottled water; port taxes and fees; and ground transfers with a Viking Air purchase. And all of these upfront savings really made a difference on the back-end of my trip. Honestly, while Viking will never be considered one of the cheapest cruise lines , once you factor in the extras they include on the front end (ones you’d have to buy separately with other cruise lines), your total vacation costs may be more similar than you’d think.

Included excursions

Each sailing included one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call, and they were fabulous. Viking really goes out of its way to find the best local guides and takes you to both off-the-beaten-path sights and well-known landmarks. For instance, included in the package was a fantastic walking tour of Rouen and its impressive Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, a walking tour of Chateau Gaillard in Les Andelys and a tour of Napoleon’s Chateau de Malmaison just west of Paris. The all-inclusive cruise also included a full-day tour of the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy (including Omaha Beach, a four-mile stretch where two-thirds of the seaborne troops from the U.S. landed on D-Day), as well as visits to both the Caen Memorial Museum and Normandy American Cemetery, where Viking held a touching memorial service for all passengers.

I ended up paying extra for two non-included tours I couldn’t pass up (the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Museum) and felt those prices were aligned with any other cruise line.

Ideal docking

The Viking longships were purpose-built to navigate the Seine river, which means they can dock at exclusive locations that are super convenient to the sights you want to see. For instance, this cruise began in Paris, and we were docked a mere 20-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. In fact, that’s the first thing I did after boarding the Radgrid , which allowed me to check off my biggest bucket-list item immediately!

Compared to docking at massive ports in the Caribbean, docking along the Seine was intimatein towns along the way, we did so right in front of impressive castles, chateaus and cathedrals. Sometimes, we’d just hop off the boat and walk into town on our own, thankful that we didn’t need to coordinate public transportation or walk for miles. This also came in handy if we wanted to enjoy a meal in town or do some shopping on our own time.

Compare that to many ocean cruises, where you’re often docked an hour or two away from a major cityas is the case with Rome and Bangkok, for example. That makes your already short time in port even tighter and can negatively impact your ability to see and do as much as you’d like.

Fewer passengers (and more intimate settings)

With only 168 guests in total, you will quickly become acquainted with them allthere are very few public spaces to hang out, and you’ll see guests time and again in the restaurant and on your tours. If you consider yourself less social or are a couple looking for romantic cruise dinners, you might find this off-putting, as you’ll rarely have the opportunity to dine alonein fact, all tables have eight or more seats (and you often find yourself repeating your life story to new passengers at every meal).

But we found it to be rather fun, getting to know a variety of people from around the world, each with interesting travel stories to share. Remembering all their names was the hardest part!

Bustling views

Because you’re on a river, there’s always a great view from the sun deck or your balcony. Most of the cabins have a balcony, except for the 22 standard staterooms, which have a half-height picture window. Compare that to staring off into endless miles of (beautiful) open ocean on an ocean cruise. While I do love the feeling of being “out to sea” and feeling small while bobbing on a seemingly never-ending body of water, there’s a lot more action on a river.

At times, we were passing through large, bustling cities along the Seine, and other times, meandering marsh-like areas. We moved under countless bridges, past woods and fields, and through the Norman countryside. The views kept changing hourly, and I felt like I was part of the scene. Several times, we passed so close to other boats that I could have literally stretched my arm out and touched them.

Smooth sailing

Most people are surprised to learn that I’m prone to seasickness, especially since I choose to take multiple cruises a year. While I clearly never let it deter me, I was incredibly pleased to note that there’s no jarring movement on a riverboat whatsoever. In fact, there were multiple times I didn’t even realize we had left the dock and were moving! It’ll be a huge relief not to have to add my seasickness wristband, Dramamine or prescription patch to my cruise packing list next time.

The con of a river cruise

Compared to an ocean cruise, there were, of course, some things I knew I wouldn’t find on board, including a casino, gym, spa, laundry room, swimming pool, waterslides, theater productions, photographers taking cheesy pictures of me, and children (all passengers must be 18 and over), and that was fine by me. In fact, I greatly appreciated the simplicity of the ship. It isn’t a destination or filled with amusement parklike amenities; it’s a means of transportation, and it serves its purpose well. But there was one thing in particular that I missed: food variety.

Lack of food options

One thing that got bit stale to me halfway through the cruise was not having any choice of restaurants or barsthere is only one of each on board. You’ll eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner in “The Restaurant” and get your drinks in “The Lounge & Bar.” You could choose to sit in the Aquavit Terrace, an indoor-outdoor area at the front of the ship perfect for al fresco dining when the weather cooperates, but our weather was pretty cold and wet during my late-March sailing, so we didn’t get to make much use of it. (I’m guessing this is fantastic in the summer!) And it’s the same menu as the Restaurant, so you’re only getting a different view, not different food.

I’m a total foodie, and I really crave a variety of cuisines and menus. I love the myriad choices you have on ocean ships, from culinary-focused cruises to the over-the-top 40 restaurant and bar venues on a mega ship like my cruise on the Icon of the Seas . Plus, I love hanging out in bars with different vibes depending on my mood.

While Viking did a nice job of providing well-rounded menus, incorporating some local French dishes and delivering tasty food, I yearned for a change of scenery and flavor profile. I look forward to my next Viking cruise, but I’d make more of an effort to eat off the ship whenever possible to help break up the monotony of mealtimes.

It’s all about the journey

I finally understand the magic of river cruising. It’s a wonderfully peaceful way to travel, you learn your way around the small ship in an hour (vs. several days on the big ships), you’re encouraged to interact with other guests, you get access to more intimate experiences and lesser-visited places, and there’s no surprise bill at the end, thanks to the all-inclusive model. I’ll still enjoy ocean cruises regularly, but I also look forward to exploring the Rhine, Danube and maybe even the Yangtze in the future.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
