11 Players to watch in Vikings 2024 preseason finale against the Eagles

The Minnesota Vikings preseason is wrapping up this Saturday, and heading into the finale, there are several players across all the positions worth watching for. Offense and defense have position battles that come down to the wire, and with strong performances, they can hope to make the final roster decisions that much harder for the team.

Now, when it comes to this game against the Eagles, we do not know how many starters will be playing. One could imagine that Sam Darnold will not see much playing time, if any, because he is the designated starter. The quarterback position is different, though, because everyone else could see some playing time outside some other established players, perhaps.

Because of the caveats laid out prior, the selections of players to watch may include those deeper on the depth chart. With that in mind, here are the 11 players we watch heading into the preseason finale.

Jalen Nailor , Wide Receiver

Trishtin jackson, wide receiver, brandon powell , wide receiver, nick muse , tight end, ed ingram , guard, bo richter, linebacker, pat jones ii, edge rusher, jaren hall , quarterback, lewis cine , safety, fabian moreau , cornerback, duke shelley , cornerback.

Minnesota Man Starts Cat Tour in His Historic Neighborhood as a Joke. Now, Hundreds Show Up Every Year (Exclusive)

The latest event brought out over 500 cat lovers

John Edwards/Wedge Live

  • In 2017, John Edwards came up with the idea of a walking tour celebrating the cats that live in a historic area of Minneapolis
  • The cat tour has exploded into a beloved local event with hundreds of attendees each year
  • Edwards tells PEOPLE how the joke has turned into a true community experience

Minneapolis residents have sparked a tradition that's gaining attention around the country.

John Edwards, the organizer behind the Minnesota Cat Tour that takes place each June, started #CatsOfTheWedge in 2017, an idea born from his sense of humor and penchant for posting cat photos on Twitter.

"When I walk around — I walk a lot for transportation — it's in a densely populated neighborhood with a lot of apartment buildings. It's also a neighborhood that has a lot of historic buildings and architecture, homes that were built in the 1890s or earlier. So there are the historic home tours and as a way to poke fun at that, I thought, 'Why don't we have a cat tour?' " he tells PEOPLE.

The idea "started small" as "Something where people walk around the neighborhood and check out the cats that are always in the windows."

"It stayed small, just like 20 people or so, for the first couple of years. None of the cats were pre-registered. It was just whoever happened to be in the window. I didn't realize it could be something big until 2019," Edwards shares.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

That year, the event grew into "the first really big one, where hundreds of people showed up."

"This built momentum. People saw all the cats in the windows and a lot of people started posting to social media about it. We made it on the local morning show and there were a bunch of local articles written about it. Since then, it's gained momentum into what it is today."

Edwards says that the turnout year after year has been "surprising" for him, with over 500 people coming out to visit 20 stops in June 2024.

"I'm always surprised by how many people come and have a really good time. Even though it started out as a joke, it's also really sincerely a good time. People enjoy themselves," he says.

"I don't think it's just about the path. It's about gathering together in a large group of people and being together in the outdoors. There's something magical about taking a walk together as a group in the streets of the neighborhood."

Edwards also says it serves a good purpose for the locals.

"It's a good way to highlight the condition of our streets," he shares. "You get people out walking in the neighborhood and they take notice. We have used it, especially this year, as a way to highlight the street reconstruction that's happening nearby. If you enjoy getting outside and walking the neighborhood, your local government taking action to make your street safer and the traffic slower is totally important, too."

Since the idea has gone viral in recent years, Edwards says that other places have reached out, inspired and interested in starting cat tours of their own.

"I've heard of multiple other places that are interested in doing this. I've gotten messages on social media and by email asking for advice about how to put them together," he says.

"I do think soon we're going to start seeing them in other parts of the country. I hope none of them steal Minneapolis' glory. After all, it's the place where it all started."

Work on the Wedge LIVE Cat Tour 2025 is already underway, with dates set and a grand marshall named. Cats can also be registered for the tour at this time.

"At this point, I'm not worried about the people showing up because the people turn out every time. We do get a little nervous about whether the cats will come out ," Edwards admits. "Will I have enough registration? Will there be enough cats? It's a lot of people to have to disappoint if they don't but so far it hasn't happened. We've grown every year."

Minnesota United makeover: Six new Loons to know as MLS play resumes Saturday

The Loons haven’t played a game since July 30, but they’ve been busy overhauling their roster.

By Jon Marthaler

minnesota players tour

At the beginning of 2024, the Minnesota United lineup included a lot of faces that were pretty familiar to the Allianz Field faithful. Look down the all-time list of players who have made the most MLS appearances for the Loons, and six of the eight were in 2024′s first starting XI of the year — Michael Boxall, Hassani Dotson, Robin Lod, Wil Trapp, Dayne St. Clair and Franco Fragapane.

It was good for continuity, but with four of the six also on the experienced side of age 30, chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad went into the summer transfer window with two goals: To get better, certainly, but also to get younger, to change the squad from one full of known commodities to one that includes some youth and potential.

And so, Minnesota’s squad for Saturday’s game against Seattle could include as many as four new Loons , with another still working through the visa process and soon to arrive, and a sixth that already debuted before the Leagues Cup. Here is a guide to the summer signings — and what the Loons are expecting from them:

Kelvin Yeboah — F

When El-Ahmad took over at Minnesota United, he had a specific way of playing in mind — energetic, high-pressing and vertical. As to whether the Loons have done that so far, El-Ahmad will only allow that Minnesota’s attack in 2024 has been a “hybrid.”

Yeboah, though, is a signing designed to get the team closer to his ideal. “We want that, pace, drive, wanting to run in behind, brave enough to kind of dribble past people with pace — and just a natural instinct that he wants to constantly go forward,” said El-Ahmad.

As for versatility, Minnesota believes that the Italian, who is 24, can play either centrally or out wide.

Joaquín Pereyra — AM

Minnesota’s new Argentine midfielder is the last of the new signings to arrive, with the club expecting his visa appointment to be next week. But when he does, the Loons are planning for a player who can fill multiple roles. The 25-year-old is left-footed, and manager Eric Ramsay was most enthusiastic about his skill level. “Raising the technical level of the group is a really big thing for us, and he certainly will do that,” he said.

Pereyra, 25, was a big piece for Atlético Tucumán in Argentina’s top division, including serving as the team’s captain during several stretches.

Jefferson Díaz — CB

At just 23, the Colombian center back appears set to immediately slide into the right side of the three center backs in Minnesota’s defense, a role the Loons haven’t really been able to fill since selling Kervin Arriaga to FK Partizan. Ramsay, who called Díaz a “ball-playing central defender,” sees him as Arriaga’s replacement. “[His] aggression and physical profile will really add to the team, and that’s something that we’ve missed since Arriaga left, so he’s more than capable of stepping into those shoes,” Ramsay said.

Matúš Kmeť — RB

Kmeť, who’s been a rising star in Slovakia despite playing for a smallish club there, is bringing youth and depth to the team on the right wing. Minnesota is hoping the 24-year-old can provide an option on the right to rival what Joseph Rosales has provided at the left wingback position.

One thing to watch will be whether Kmeť, who is listed at 5-8 and 132 pounds, can cope with the physicality of MLS; most of the players listed in that lightweight range in MLS are shifty attacking midfielders, not defenders or wingbacks.

Related Coverage

minnesota players tour

Anthony Markanich — LB

Markanich was the last of Minnesota’s moves in the transfer window, arriving in exchange for cap space in a trade with St. Louis. The left back made 15 starts in MLS this season, but after City fired head coach Bradley Carnell, he appeared to fall out of favor and didn’t seem to be in the club’s future plan.

According to Ramsay, the hidden benefit of having Markanich is the chance to potentially use left winger Joseph Rosales in other positions, as well. “We’ve made no secret about wanting to be flexible in how we use players,” said Ramsay. “You’ve got someone in that side in Rosales who can play as a left wing back, at left back, at left-sided 10, as a midfield player — and perhaps in bringing Anthony in, we have given ourselves a little bit more scope to use Joseph across the pitch.”

Samuel Shashoua — AM

Shashoua was the only summer signing who arrived early enough to already have played for the Loons, with substitute appearances in two of Minnesota’s three games since the transfer window opened. A self-described “dynamic dribbler, entertainer, someone who’s always trying to make things happen,” Shashoua’s initial role will likely be as one of the Loons’ “finishers” — an attacker who comes on in the second half with energy and the determination to make something happen late in the game.

Michael R Fermoyle

Mike Fermoyle’s amateur golf career features state titles in five different decades, beginning with the State Public Links (1969), three State Amateurs (1970, 1973 and 1980), and four State Four-Ball championships (1972, 1985, 1993 and 2001). Fermoyle was medalist at the Pine to Palm in 1971, won the Resorters in 1972, made the cut at the State Amateur 18 consecutive years (1969 to 1986), the last being 2000, and amassed 13 top-ten finishes. Fermoyle also made it to the semi-final matches at the MGA’s annual match play championship, the Players’, in 1982 and 1987. Fermoyle enjoyed a career as a sportswriter at the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch before retiring in 2006. Two years later he began a second career covering the golf beat exclusively for the MGA and its website, mngolf.org, where he ranks individual prep golfers and teams, provides coverage on local amateur and professional tournaments and keeps tabs on how Minnesotans are faring on the various professional tours.
