Everything You Should Know About NordicTrack’s Fusion CST Studio [A Review]

Will, PT

  • April 1, 2024

nordictrack fusion cst review

NordicTrack’s Fusion CST Studio takes your traditional functional trainer and gives it a modern, hi-tech twist by making it iFit compatible.

The fact that it comes with a built-in full-length mirror is also pretty unique.

The result is an interesting fitness machine that combines strength training and trainer led, studio classes- think Peloton but with resistance training.

We’re seeing more and more fitness brands join the streaming craze these days and there’s even plenty of smart home gyms to choose from now too.

But NordicTrack was one of the first.

Purely as a functional trainer, the Fusion CST has plenty of offer, including 6 independent pulley systems, 6 removable handles, and a smooth magnetic resistance system (which is fairly unique in itself).

But this trainer isn’t perfect.

If you’re looking for a new home gym and considering the Fusion CST, keep reading – this review will take a close look at everything this functional trainer does and doesn’t have going for it.

I’ll also offer my 2 cents on who I think this machine would work best for.

After reading, you’ll know whether or not this is the right option for your home gym.

NordicTrack’s Fusion CST Studio could be a great option for folks looking for smooth acting, quiet resistance with tons of streaming workout options. The warranty could be longer, but for the price, it’s going to be hard to find a better smart home gym system.

NordicTrack’s Fusion CST Studio

nordictrack fusion cst studio

NordicTrack is a huge home fitness brand, popular for providing quality equipment that won’t completely break the bank.

They’re probably most well known for their treadmills and exercise bikes, which are solid options depending on your fitness goals and budget.

With the Fusion CST, they’re stepping into the strength training arena, which isn’t completely outside of their comfort zone, but the brand definitely focuses on cardio machines.

And even though I don’t think NordicTrack ever technically labels this machine as a functional trainer , that’s exactly what it is.

“Functional trainer” is just another term for a cable machine and these devices are awesome because they give you a ton of workout variety and they’re fairly safe to use.

All commercial gyms have them and they work great as home gyms too because you can do a ton of exercises without needing a bunch of equipment.

Functional trainers come in all shapes and sizes and prices vary greatly depending on what you’re getting.

At roughly $2000, I would consider the Fusion CST a moderately priced trainer, but more on that later.

  • Heavy duty frame
  • 6 independent pulleys
  • 3 pulley heights
  • 20 levels of magnetic resistance
  • iFit compatible
  • Full length mirror
  • 30 days of iFit included
  • 10″ tablet included
  • Automatic Trainer Control
  • Comes with 6 handles and 2 ankle straps
  • Built-in tablet holder
  • Free-standing adjustable tablet holder included
  • Bluetooth heart rate monitor compatible
  • Pulleys not adjustable
  • Magnetic resistance not well suited for heavy strength training
  • Warranty could be longer

It’s going to be a little difficult to organize this review like I do my other functional trainer reviews, but I’m gonna try -let’s start with the frame and construction.

The Fusion CST comes with a fairly compact frame with the following dimensions: 41.5″ x 60.5″ x 73.5″ (L x W x H) .

That’s only a floor space of roughly 3.5′ x 5′, which is pretty good for a functional trainer.

Of course you also have to add in the floor space necessary for use.

In reality, it will depend on your size and the types of exercises you choose to perform, but NordicTrack recommends a space of at least 6′ surrounding the machine to ensure safe use.

The frame itself is heavy-duty and solid.

With a in box weight of 378 lb , this CST likely weighs about 340 lb, so it has a significant amount of weight to it.

There are 6 total pulleys on the CST organized in 3 systems: upper, mid, and lower.

It’s nice having pulleys at differing heights because it significantly increases your workout variety, but you can’t adjust anything.

None of the pulleys are height adjustable, which might not be a huge deal to most users, but some folks might miss having the ability to fine tune the position for optimal form on certain exercises.

The cables themselves are high-end and users report smooth operation over the pulleys.

Each cable extends a max distance of 95″ from the machine, giving you plenty of room to extend and stretch out as far as you like.

Even taller uses should be able to fully extend without worrying about running out of cable.

Overall, the Fusion CST comes with a small footprint and a robust frame that should feel stable during workouts. The smooth acting pulleys and long cable reach are obvious perks as well.

fusion cst studio

NordicTrack’s Fusion CST Studio comes with the following features:

20 Levels Of Magnetic Resistance

The resistance system on this trainer is one of the biggest differences between it and most other functional trainers out there.

Instead of using plates or weight stacks, the Fusion CST uses a flywheel and magnets to produce your resistance.

The resistance system on this gym is basically the same thing you’d find on most indoor cycles.

The resistance is increased of decreased digitally by moving magnets closer or father away from the flywheel.

Anyway, there’s 20 levels of magnetic resistance you can choose from.

Those 20 levels give you an available resistance range from 10 – 100 lb, meaning you can basically adjust the resistance in 5 lb increments.

With a max output of 100 lb, the CST offers plenty of resistance for the higher-rep, cardio/toning workouts that are included with iFit, but people looking for intense strength training or power lifting type workouts will likely be disappointed.

But the magnetic system is going to be smoother and quieter, which some users might prefer.

iFit Compatible

iFit is the fitness app that ICON HEALTH & FITNESS (the company that owns NordicTrack as well as several other popular home fitness brands, like ProForm) owns.

This is why all of their brands are iFit compatible.

iFit is a subscription based streaming app that gives you access to pretty much unlimited, trainer-led workouts.

You have to pay a monthly fee for unlimited use (I think it’s around $39/month), but they usually throw in a free month with purchase.

This may sound expensive, but if using iFit takes the place of a gym membership, it’s probably more doable.

The Fusion CST is designed to work specifically with iFit – as such, you can use the included tablet to watch workouts and track all your fitness data.

The trainers leading your workouts will even adjust your resistance automatically based on the settings you put in at the beginning (automatic trainer control).

This is a cool feature found on pretty much all NordicTrack machines now and users seem to enjoy it.

iFit offers both on-demand and live courses. Most of the classes are HIIT style, designed to help you burn calories and build strength at the same time.

fusion cst studio tablet

10″ Tablet Included

NordicTrack includes a 10″ tablet for you to view the iFit workouts on.

This is a pretty nice bonus because you usually have to provide your own on these types of machines (like the Echelon Connect EX3 ).

Using the tablet, you’ll be able to access all of the iFit workouts as well as track your fitness data.

P.S.-  signing up for iFit is completely optional. You can use the CST on manual mode without signing up, but you won’t have access to the online workouts.

Full Length Mirror

Here’s another nice little bonus.

You’ll notice that the front of the CST is covered with a full length (70″ x 15″) mirror, making it easy to check your form during workouts.

6 Handles And 2 Ankle Straps

The Fusion CST comes with 6 standard handles you can easily attach to the pulleys. They’re just like the handles you’d see at any gym.

You also get 2 ankle straps, giving you the ability to perform a variety of lower body moves (like hip abduction and extension, hamstring curls, etc.).

It would be nice if NordicTrack threw in a few extra attachments, maybe a rope or a metal tricep extension handle (but you could always purchase these elsewhere).

Heart Rate Monitoring

The Fusion CST is compatible with bluetooth heart rate monitors, allowing you to track this during workouts.

I don’t believe one is included with purchase any more, so you’d have to buy one separately.

Tablet Holders

The CST comes with an included, adjustable free-standing tablet holder that can be placed anywhere you need it for easy viewing during workouts.

It also comes with a magnetic tablet shelf that can be placed on the mirror itself, so you can see your instructor and the mirror at the same time.

It’s awesome that NordicTrack includes both accessories with purchase.

fusion cst tablet stand

Most of the CST comes pre-assembled- which is a good thing, because you don’t want to be messing around with routing cables and all the internal going-ons around that flywheel.

You basically have to just attach the legs, the arms, and all of the handles.

The most difficult part of assemble will likely be attaching the feet because this gym is heavy.

It’s weight is a good thing because it makes it more stable during use (you don’t want this thing moving around during your workout).

But it also makes moving it more difficult.

You’ll need a friend or two around to help to ensure safe assembly.

Overall though, most folks should be able to assemble themselves without having to pay for professional assistance.

The NordicTrack Fusion CST comes with the following warranty:

  • 10 year frame
  • 1 year parts
  • 1 year labor

It’s kinda hard to compare the warranty on this machine to others because it’s different than your traditional functional trainers that don’t require electronics or a console.

But that said, I think 10 years on the frame is pretty good.

NordicTrack offers 2 years on parts for most of their other products, so I’m not sure why they offer a shorter parts guarantee here.

And honestly, for a $2k gym, it would be nice to see a longer parts warranty.

And a year for labor is pretty standard, no issues there.

Overall, not a bad warranty, but could probably be better.

Final Thoughts

The NordicTrack Fusion CST offers an interesting mix-up.

I like the idea of combining strength training with studio classes because I know from my own experience with Peloton how fun and motivating they can be.

As a stand alone functional trainer, this gym holds its own fairly well. I like how heavy and sturdy the frame is and I like the fairly compact footprint.

The magnetic resistance will work nicely for folks looking to tone and tighten up and it’s a very safe alternative to free weights.

But it’s not the best option for real strength training.

So, if you’re looking for some heavy resistance, this isn’t the gym for you.

I also prefer adjustable pulleys.

Even though the 3 height positions available on the CST will check off most positions necessary, having the ability to adjust the height of the pulleys gives you more variety.

If you’re cool with signing up for iFit and using the iFit workouts then I think the Fusion CST makes a lot of sense.

If you’re not confident that you’ll stick with iFit, then you may be better off with a different home gym (which makes sense, considering this gym is designed specifically for iFit).

Overall though, I like the Fusion CST Studio and I think it fits in nicely with the studio streaming movement we’re currently in the middle of.

I think this is like the perfect product for me since I don’t like going to the gym. Great one by Mediatek!

' src=

Good review and this is one of the best home gym equipment. The Mediatek chipsets make it so good for the users and also offer a personalized gym experience.

Hi, this was a nice review! The CST seems to be good training equipment, but what about older (>60 y) people , who don‘t want to pump up and are more interested in staying fit and flexible? Does ifit has courses for them? Greets from Germany, hope you all are healthy in this hard times !

' src=

Thanks, we’re hanging in there! Yes, with an iFit subscription, you get access to the entire library of workouts, regardless of what machine you’re using. iFit is designed to work with pretty much all NordicTrack and ProForm machines and you can use it without a machine too. You get access to all of the strength training, yoga, cardio, and recovery workouts and you get to pick which ones you do and don’t do. You can choose less intense workouts to perform with the CST as well- it’s all about finding the right type of workouts to meet your goals and to match your fitness level. I think that’s my long-winded way of saying that there are definitely workouts that can help you stay fit and flexible. Hope that helps and thanks for reading!

I feel this is an accurate review. I have had a Fusion CST for about 7 months now and I do like it. My only issue is that there is no way of tracking workouts beyond their watts measurement. I would like to track reps and resistance on my manual workouts but I haven’t found a way. They also do not update their trainer led workouts very often.

Thanks for sharing.

I’m going to look at a used one ($400!?) to add to my home gym. I already have a bench, free weights, a barbell, step up bench and additional cable attachments for my multi gym machine. What it lacks is rotational movement.

I’m hoping to add light weight cable crossovers, PNF diagonals and resisted rotation into my workouts.

My wife and I are both in our fifties. We don’t foresee the need for very heavy rotational movements as the nature of those movements doesn’t lend for heavy resistance.

Hoping this is a good move…

Sounds like you guys have a nice home gym setup, that’s awesome. And as a physical therapist, I love to hear that you’re looking to add PNF diagonals to your routine, excellent stuff. I hope the used Fusion CST works well for ya and thanks for sharing.

SEE BEST PRICE

Quick Summary

Serving as the entry-level model of the NordicTrack Fusion CST Series, the Fusion CST offers a 2-in-1 strength and cardio machine utilizing Silent Magnetic Resistance. Built around an inertia-enhanced flywheel, the 73.5-inch high tower sports 20 digital resistance settings, six precision cable ends, two squat pulleys, and two ankle straps. With a 95-inch independent cable travel, users can execute the same movements they would with a traditional weight-stack tower.

But because the machine offers a much smoother Silent Magnetic Resistance as opposed to the weights, it better bridges the gap between cardio and strength training. Its unique setup can be used for a host of your usual strength training  exercises, from cable flies to lateral raises to bent cable crossovers. One of the machine’s biggest selling points is its iFit capability; it gives you access to a huge variety of intense cross-training workouts (watch a video preview of the training sessions to see the machine in action). Much like what’s available for their treadmills and exercise bikes, trainer-led workouts run you through fast-paced sessions to keep your heart pumping and muscles building in the process.

Meanwhile, the 2022 NordicTrack Fusion Studio serves as the next step in the series, incorporating a 70″ x 15″ mirror and live resistance control for trainers in remote locations to adjust the resistance while they train you. Priced at $1,999 and $2,495 respectively, both machines are built to work with the iFit app and come with 30-day family membership included in the purchase. This all sounds great, but how effective are they really? We’re here to unpack the pros and cons of the Fusion CST so you can decide whether it’s the right machine for you.

Specifications

Our Rating: 90/100

Compact, smartly engineered, and capable of bringing studio-level training into your home, the Fusion CST has a fair bit going for it. Outside of the variety of iFit training sessions, one of its most noteworthy elements is the way it can meld cardio and strength training into a single workout. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and other fast-paced workouts are a big part of the equation. It’s also easier on joints than a traditional weight-based home gym on account of how its magnetic resistance system works—a major plus for those who’ve struggled with muscle and joint pain over the years.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Hero

While clever in design, and practical for those looking to both lose weight and build a bit of lean muscle, the Fusion CST isn’t a replacement for conventional strength training home gyms. Don’t get me wrong, the programs NordicTrack’s pro trainers have designed for this rig are effective for building lean muscle to a point. However, if increasing muscle mass is your key goal, you would be better off looking at more traditional home gyms or things like the Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE . What stood out most at first glance is the lack of adjustability on the cable points, which could be a hindrance with some exercises for those looking to do more conventional strength training workouts.

Pros & Cons

  • Combines cardio and strength training for maximum workout efficiency
  • Uses magnetic resistance to make strength training relatively gentle on your joints compared to weight stacks
  • Has three sets of pulleys and a maximum pulley extension length of 95 inches
  • Trainer-controlled resistance during iFit training sessions
  • Has a range of 20 resistance settings, adjusted digitally
  • Includes a removable 10″ NordicTrack tablet for iFit training
  • Comes with an adjustable height tablet/smartphone stand
  • Includes a Bluetooth chest strap for wireless heart rate monitoring
  • Fusion CST operates more quietly than machines with weight stacks
  • Has a space-conscious design for practical use in most homes, taking up just 3½ x 5 feet of floor space
  • The cables are not height adjustable
  • The parts and labor warranty is only valid for one year—much shorter than warranties from the competition

NordicTrack Fusion CST

Introduction

The Fusion CST is NordicTrack’s contribution to a new class of home gym. The brand’s intent with the Fusion line is to streamline workouts by “fusing” strength training with a high-intensity cardio routine. This is primarily executed through the vast assortment of interactive training sessions available via the 30-Day iFit membership. Professional trainers will guide you through one intense workout after the next, burning fat and building lean muscle in the process.

By opting for a magnetic resistance system, the unit is more compact than its conventional weight stack equivalent, though there is one compromise that comes with this configuration. Unlike a conventional rig, resistance on the cables is not bi-directional, so you only have resistance during the concentric phase of a rep and not on the return (eccentric phase). Similar to a rowing machine though, this one-way resistance is a great setup when cardio-focused pacing is required for a workout, bringing us back to the resounding point about who this machine is targeting.

The iFit app is central to the Fusion CST; it ships with a 30-day membership, allowing you to add personal training to the equation. NordicTrack includes a proprietary 10″ tablet as part of the deal to follow along with these workouts, as well as a separate tablet stand that allows for easier viewing when the workout requires facing away from the machine.

As an added bonus (and something uncommon in the category), a wireless chest strap heart rate monitor is included with the Fusion CST.

NordicTrack Fusion CST iFit

Workout Programs

Given its unique design, pro guidance is key as you get started with the Fusion CST. As you saw in the video above, the key with this rig is pacing; you’ll focus less on pushing your absolute heaviest weight, and more on being able to power through all of the different motions at a pace set by your trainer.

Essentially, iFit is an on-demand virtual personal training system. You can schedule reminders to tune in for live daily classes, or choose from a huge archive of sessions that have been recorded previously. It allows you to change up your routine from one day to the next or save a set of favorites to rotate through on a weekly basis.

Besides workout guidance, iFit can help you reach fitness goals with comprehensive health feedback. It can count your daily steps (a wearable device is included), make personalized recommendations about your sleep cycle, provide nutritional guidance, and much more.

A good fit for most homes, the NordicTrack Fusion CST has a 73.5″ x 60.5″ x 41.5″ footprint , so it won’t burn a ton of space wherever y ou choose to set up your home gym.

The Fusion has three sets of pulleys with 20 levels of resistance. If you’re setting your own routine, these can be adjusted via buttons on the console, and when you’re following an iFit course, the program/trainer will adjust your resistanc e up and down from your preset baseline as you work through the training session.

According to NordicTrack, the Fusion CST is also inherently more gentle on muscles and joints due to the smoother delivery of resistance via its magnetic system, making it an appealing option for older fitness enthusiasts, and/or those suffering from chronic joint issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does the Fusion CST require an iFit subscription to work? No, the machine can used in manual mode.
  • What are the differences between the Fusion CST and Studio? In addition to the 70″ x 15″ mirror, the Studio offers an integrated charging station, device holder, and better automatic trainer control features.
  • Is the Fusion CST hard to assemble? Not really as the instructions are quite simple. That said, the device is quite large at 375 pounds though and some assistance might be required.

Warranty & Guarantee

Nordi cTrack sells the Fusion CST home gym with a 10-year frame warranty and 1-year parts and labor warranty. Given the complexity of the magneti c system, and the fact that the display/tablet is included, this seems a bit light when compared to other home gyms on the market.

Though it fills a small niche of the fitness category as a whole, the NordicTrack Fusion CST is a unique and appealing option for some, including older fitness enthusiasts and those suffering from chronic joint issues. We focus so much of our efforts on traditional cardio equipment, but at the end of the day there are still plenty of folks out there looking to get fit without having to hop on a treadmill or exercise bike. By striking a balance between lifting and high-intensity cardio, I have no doubt that there’s at least a modest audience for a piece of equipment like this.

Trainer’s Tips for the NordicTrack Fusion CST

In terms of hypertrophy, the Fusion CST is a dream come true for bodybuilders. When I’m prepping for a bodybuilding show, flushing the muscles with blood is key to creating the vascular pump one needs on a stage, or frankly just to look good. The pumped, lean, and cut look is typically what is sought by people shopping for something like the Fusion CST. With Silent Magnetic Resistance levels instead of a stack of weight plates, consider employing the concept of Time Under Tension (TUT) into your workout. TUT refers to the length of time a muscle is worked or under tension. Instead of counting repetitions at a specific poundage, you’ll be performing repetitions for a set length of time.

Frankly, the body doesn’t know the difference between 10 reps with 30 pounds, or 30 seconds at that resistance. But by focusing on the time the muscle is under tension, you’re more likely to go further and get more blood flow into those muscles than if you simply aim for, and stop at, 10 reps. Because this machine has magnetic resistance, you won’t have nearly as much friction or clanging as with weights, and the motion will be much smoother for longer periods of time.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Review 2024

Build Quality

Updated: February 20, 2024

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is a home gym that uses a cable, pulley, and flywheel system to create a smart training routine. The Fusion CST Studio is ideal for endurance athletes who need an at-home strength training solution to round out their routine. Endurance exercise is highly repetitive making athletes who participate in this type of exercise susceptible to overuse injuries. Strength training is the perfect way to combat these injuries. The Fusion CST Studio is great for building muscular endurance, upper body training, and core training. Additionally, the Fusion CST Studio may also be suitable for lower body training, and strength training for beginner to intermediate users.

Who The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio Is Best For:

  • Beginner to Intermediate Users: NordicTrack states that the Fusion CST Studio offers between 10 to 100 lbs of magnetic resistance. This resistance may not be challenging enough for all types of training or experience training.
  • Endurance Athletes: The Fusion CST Studio is great for training muscular endurance without detracting from your main activity of choice.
  • Exercisers Training High Reps & Sets: The Fusion CST Studio is ideal for users training for a high number of repetitions and sets. Whether you are training cardio or muscular endurance, the Fusion CST Studio may be the right match for you.
  • Anyone Afraid of Getting Sore: The Fusion CST Studio does not offer much resistance during the eccentric phase of your movement. Eccentric movements tend to create more soreness or DOMS than concentric contractions alone.

Pros And Cons Of The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio

  • The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio provides a compact all-in-one home gym.
  • The Fusion CST Studio is a great addition to a NordicTrack cardio machine user’s routine.
  • The mirror allows you to monitor your form while training.
  • The 10-inch tablet to view the classes is included with the Studio.
  • The Fusion CST Studio is stable and heavy to prevent tipping.
  • The 6 cables and additional squat pulleys provide tons of training options.
  • The Fusion CST Studio may not provide enough resistance for all types of training.
  • The Fusion CST Studio’s flywheel does not rewind to create resistance during the eccentric portion of the exercise.
  • The classes for the Fusion CST Studio are limited.

The Fusion CST Studio is a very heavy machine. It weighs over 300 lbs to prevent it from moving at all even while you are working out at your hardest. That said, you should be particular about where you place the Fusion CST. Keep it somewhere away from children and where you plan to keep it for the long term. This machine is not on wheels, so it is best to provide it with a permanent location. You don’t want to move it if you can avoid it!

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio comes with NordicTrack’s standard warranty of 10 years for the frame and 1 year for everything else. This warranty could definitely be better. Because I have not tested the machine in person, I can’t speak to how durable the cables and other components might be, and that 1-year warranty isn’t too reassuring.

Cables and Pulleys

The resistance is created by a flywheel, cables, and pulleys. You have six different cables and pulleys you can use. Two are at the top of the machine, two a little further down, and two at the bottom. There are also additional squat pulleys. The cables can extend 95 inches from the machine.

The lowest cables can be used with the squat pulleys which bring the cables further away from the machine and change their angle. This allows you to more comfortably perform a squat and other exercises on the Fusion CST Studio.

Magnets create the resistance by braking the flywheel. Twenty magnetic resistance levels create up to 100 lbs of resistance total when two cables are used together (or about 50 lbs per cable). The resistance can be adjusted with buttons on the side of the Studio. While in an iFIT workout, they will automatically adjust. Before beginning a workout class, you will be asked to set your intensity level. This level will determine your load for each exercise in the class.

Unlike other flywheel-based strength training machines, the Studio’s flywheel spins as you pull the cable away from the machine, but it does not turn as you bring the cable back toward the machine. This means that the resistance only activates during the concentric part of the movement while there is not much resistance for the eccentric portion. In other words, when you bring the handle/cable away from the machine, it is hard but not when you bring it closer it is easy. I’ll discuss the impacts of this type of training below.

Training Targets

The Fusion CST Studio can be used for upper body, lower body, and core training. Advanced users may quickly surpass the Studio’s resistance capabilities, particularly for lower body exercises. Because of the Fusion CST Studio’s limited resistance range, it will be better suited to users performing high rep and set training. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to users going for maximum hypertrophy (or building bigger muscles). While you can see hypertrophy gains from this type of machine, it may take longer because there is not enough eccentric loading.

The Fusion CST Studio has a large footprint and is very heavy. It needs a permanent location and may be best for an indoor home gym area. The arms do not fold down.

Features & Accessories

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is designed to pair with the iFIT training platform. As such, it has all the necessary features to ensure that your training experience is smart and smooth. NordicTrack has thrown in all the necessary attachments and accessories with your purchase to ensure you have everything you need to get a good workout.

There are two ways to change the resistance on the Fusion CST Studio. You can pair with the iFIT training app on the included tablet and use the onscreen controls. Alternatively, you can use the buttons located on the side of the Studio. Using the tablet with an active iFIT subscription allows the resistance levels to automatically adjust based on your chosen training level. The buttons require you to make manual adjustments for every exercise you would like to perform.

A mirror covers the front of the Fusion CST Studio, so the flywheel is positioned behind the machine. The mirror is very handy for checking in on your form while training. This is helpful for users at any fitness level, because it is helpful to know when there is a fault in your form. A mirror allows you to make corrections to faults you might otherwise miss.

Tablet and Stand

A 10-inch tablet is included with Studio. The tablet works better than a built-in screen, because you can reposition it based on which direction you are facing during an exercise. A magnetic tablet rack sticks to the mirror and can be positioned wherever you can see it most easily. A stand is also included with the Studio. This stand can be positioned in front of the Studio, so when you are facing away from the mirror, you can still follow along with the training content. Depending on your training program, it may be a hassle to move the tablet around, but it is better than not being able to see it at all.

Handles and Ankle Strap

Six removable handles and two ankle straps are included with the Fusion CST Studio. The removable handles are plastic and knurled to help you grip them. The ankle straps are Velcro. These attachments should be suitable for most users. They are attached with a carabiner, so you could replace them with other attachments if you desired.

Heart Rate Connectivity

You can connect a heart rate monitor to the Fusion CST Studio. The Fusion CST Studio should pair with all Bluetooth heart rate monitors.

With any strength training equipment, there will be safety risks. The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is beginner-friendly, but it should not be used by children. The Fusion CST arguably has one safety measure, but I am not sure if NordicTrack intended it to be one. The lack of eccentric resistance keeps you from being overwhelmed by the resistance. If you can’t move the weight any further from the machine, you can bring the cable back toward the machine practically unweighted. This makes the Fusion CST Studio safer for users training by themselves, but you should still be diligent in making sure you and others around you are kept safe while training.

Performance

I have not had the opportunity to test the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio, but I will update this review if I do get the opportunity to test the Studio for myself. The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio can be used for HIIT training where you use low resistance and high reps. Depending on your current strength and fitness level, you can also increase the resistance for more traditional resistance training. The setup for each of the exercises seems pretty straightforward and beginner-friendly. I like that the machine is used with the iFIT platform, so beginners can have extra guidance toward getting a safe and effective workout.

Subscription & Content Options

iFIT is a training platform with thousands of classes filmed all around the world from over a hundred trainers. The unique thing about the Fusion CST Studio is that it does not use the main iFIT app. The tablet it comes with can be used to access a secondary app that has content specifically for this machine. You will need a full iFIT membership to use the Studio, so you still get access to the main app and can perform any of the workouts found there. Because it requires this full membership, I like the Studio best for exercisers who already have other NordicTrack or other iFIT-compatible equipment.

The major downside to the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is that the app does not seem to have as much content and is not updated as regularly as the main app. Hopefully, iFIT will continue to support the Fusion app or consider adding the content to the main app library. I would also like to see the content expanded more frequently.

Bottom Line Review of the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is an all-in-one exercise solution for cardio exercisers who need to add some resistance training to their routine. I love this machine for users who already have an iFIT membership and other compatible equipment, because it helps you round out your full exercise regimen. As I runner myself, I know how prone to neglecting strength training we can be, and I like that the Fusion CST Studio’s training style complements the goals of endurance athletes. Yet, if your goals are geared more towards building a lot of strength or hypertrophy, the Studio may not be appropriate for these goals beyond a beginner level. While iFIT provides great exercise content, the Fusion app isn’t quite as robust as the offerings on the main app. Overall, the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio could be a great solution for building muscular endurance but may be limited in other areas.

Nordictrack fusion cst studio review [video].

Avatar for Colin Jenkins

In this NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio review, we will cover everything you should know about this automatically adjusting cable strength and cardio mirror. There is a lot to love with this upgraded version of the popular Fusion CST. There is also a lot that could still use some improvement. Read (or watch) below to get the full scoop.

fusion travel cst

The Fusion CST Studio is a connected fitness cable pulley strength and cardio machine that pairs with and adjusts resistance automatically to iFIT classes. These classes require an iFIT membership and can be taken with the included 10″ tablet.

The primary difference between the Fusion CST Studio and the original Fusion CST is that this version features a full length 70” x 15” mirror on the front. This allows you to keep an eye on your form while you workout.

fusion travel cst

In addition to the Fusion CST Studio itself, it includes:

  • 10” HD Tablet
  • Adjustable Independent Tablet/Smartphone Stand
  • Magnetic Tablet/Smartphone Stand (can be placed anywhere on the mirror)
  • Two Ankle Strap Accessories
  • 30-Day iFIT Family Membership

fusion travel cst

Similar to most cable strength equipment, the Fusion CST Studio holds six cable pulleys allowing for a wide assortment of movements. The lower cables can be adjusted forward and back with an additional ‘Squat Pulley.’ These lower cables can also be used with included ankle straps for various glute and core exercises which I found to be very useful.

What is unique here is that, similar to how resistance is created higher quality indoor bikes, the cable’s resistance comes from a magnetically adjusted flywheel.

fusion travel cst

This magnetic resistance can be adjusted fairly quickly with controls on the side of the studio, or on the included tablet while taking a class. The levels range from 1-20, which NordicTrack says represent a scale of 10-100lbs of resistance. I am curious to know how these resistance numbers were calculated, as it feels like a lot less.

In fact, the max resistance for the Fusion CST Studio feels much closer to 50 or 60lbs than it does to 100lbs. Depending on the person, this is still a decent amount of resistance for single arm and single leg exercises, but it will likely not be enough for others.

fusion travel cst

Another thing that needs to be discussed is that there is very little resistance provided on the eccentric portion of movements (the lowering portion). So, during a squat for example, you will only feel the resistance on the way up. This means two things:

  • You will not be nearly as sore after using the Fusion CST Studio.
  • You will likely not get as much benefit from each lift.

This resistance type may work, and even be preferred, by those who want to build a bit of strength without feeling beat up. But it is definitely not going to be for everyone. Myself included.

Unlike other iFIT-enabled devices, the Fusion CST Studio classes are on their own separate app that you can set up on the included 10″ tablet. This tablet can be conveniently placed pretty much wherever you would like with both a magnetic stand for the mirror and a separate adjustable stand.

fusion travel cst

There are about a dozen or so Fusion CST programs on the app. Most of these programs are three to six weeks in length, and they range from more strength based to more cardio based focuses. When starting each workout, you can select how difficult you would like the weights to be, and they are automatically adjusted for each movement.

This auto adjust system takes a lot of guesswork out of your workouts and creates a smooth flow for each session. If at any time the workout is too easy or too difficult, you also easily adjust the weight via controls directly on the studio or app.

The workouts are well coached, programs progress from week to week, and there is definitely a lot here to enjoy and get results from.

fusion travel cst

The only problem I have with the app is that there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of new content. Most programs here are several years old, and from what I can tell, the addition of new classes or programs is very infrequent. While the NordicTrack page mentions live classes for the device, there are currently no live class options available for the Fusion CST.

This is a shame, since the family plan for iFIT is $39 per month. You can always have that adjusted to an individual plan which costs just $15/month. While you do also get access to iFIT’s main app, it feels like an unnecessary price when content for the Fusion CST receives so few updates.

NordicTrack also offers a strength and conditioning mirror called the Vault, which focuses on dumbbell and kettlebell workouts. The complete Vault is similar in price ($2,695 vs $2,495) and includes a complete set of dumbbells, kettlebells, and bands stored within it.

fusion travel cst

Whether you’d prefer the Fusion CST Studio or the Vault will depend on if you prefer lifting with cables or free weights. Cables are a little more beginner friendly with less stability requirements. Dumbbells and Kettlebells provide a wider variety of movement options.

While the Vault too is not updated as much as I would like, it still is receives more regular updates compared to the Fusion CST. I personally enjoy the workouts on the Vault a bit more, but with a preference towards free weights, I am aware that I’m not the target audience for the Fusion CST Studio.

fusion travel cst

Overall, I think the Fusion CST Studio is a nice upgrade from the original, with a mirror that both looks great and helps provide movement feedback. The resistance provided is quiet, smooth, and automatically adjusts your weights during workouts. However, since the resistance is a bit limited, and eccentric loading minimal, this may not be the best option for those who are more intermediate-to-advanced.

While the workouts provided by iFIT are good, they are limited to around a dozen programs. With new content rarely added, it seems excessive to force a monthly membership charge here. Hopefully this changes soon (and I will update this review if and when it does).

If you enjoy iFIT as well as the stability and ease of using cable weights, you will likely enjoy this. Most, however, would be better off looking at the similarly-priced NordicTrack Vault instead.

Review: NordicTrack Fusion CST wins w/ power-based strength training for cyclists

NordicTrack Fusion CST home gym review and tech details

Among serious cyclists, power is the key metric by which we measure our performance and gains. It’s easily quantifiable, easy to measure (with power meters getting cheaper by the minute ), and easy to see how you’re progressing. But when we hit the weights in the winter, those pound and kilogram numbers force us to measure something else entirely. The new NordicTrack Fusion CST changes all that, providing flywheel-based resistance that shows your output in watts.

NordicTrack Fusion CST home gym review and tech details

I’ve been testing the Fusion CST for a couple months, combining it with body weight movements and some riding (it’s been pretty cold, and without specific goals, it’s hard for me to stay motivated on the trainer). The machine combines strength and cardio training with video-based personal coaching to provide total body conditioning, something many cyclists ignore as they focus purely on on-the-bike speed and endurance.

The flywheel combines with magnetic resistance, letting you change the resistance to match your strength or needs. At the highest setting, 12 full-effort jump squats makes for a great set. Switch to single leg efforts to make it harder. It doesn’t replace a 300lb deadlift (what does, really?), but it’s more than enough to work your muscles over. Stepping further away from the machine makes it harder, and the cables are a very generous 95″ (2.41m) long.

For smaller muscle groups, it’s plenty of resistance. For exercises like rows, pull downs, shoulder press and flys, it’s easy to go from repping it out with what feels like a 5lb dumbbell to slow motion, full strength paddling a webbed glove through cement. The downside is there’s no negative resistance, so all of your workout is coming from the concentric motion.

Three sets of handles offer a variety of angles. The machine comes with a poster showing moves that target every major muscle group, most in several ways. That’s key to hit things from different angles to avoid developing muscular imbalances…which can happen if all you do are pushups, pullups and abs. I speak from experience, and such things take time and work to correct. So I really like the variety the Fusion CST offers. Resistance is changed by pushing a +/- button, so it takes just seconds to switch between moves.

The design also makes it very kid friendly. Because if you have kids, you know they’re going to mess with it. I’ve got my kids actually working out on it and they think it’s fun.

MAKING WORKOUTS EASY. AND FUN.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Portal workout app with subscription based programming

One of the stumbling blocks for people who have never worked out before is that they don’t know how to workout. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to weight training, the partner app  iFit Coach and $15/month subscription service has more than 50 different workouts, with new ones being added regularly. That not only keeps it interesting, but it lets you pick and choose based on your goals. Or pick a training plan and it’ll select the workouts for you each day. Most are 20-30 minutes, with some shorter ones and some longer ones.

iFit Coach app shows you how to perform full body exercises

The videos show you how to do each exercise in real time. Different coaches have different personalities, but all of the ones I’ve tried seem to do a good job of explaining the movement and offering safe alternatives if they’re too hard or you’re unable to perform them.

Once selected, the included 10″ Portal tablet (which is basically a customized Android tablet on which you can download other normal apps to, too) syncs with the Fusion CST via Bluetooth to control the resistance throughout the workout. As does an included Bluetooth heart rate strap.

NordicTrack Fusion CST home gym review and tech details

The workouts are good. Initially I was not excited about trying them, but after running through a variety of them, I’m a fan. Here’s why: Even though I have some specific workouts and movements I like to do on some days, the videos fill in to keep it fresh on other days. And they force me to work harder, faster and longer than I probably otherwise would. Same for Kristi. Because they move quick, they keep both of us engaged for the duration.

THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED

Overall the equipment is great and I recommend it highly. These are just a few small nitpicks: I wish the resistance could go a little higher. The lack of negative resistance will be a turnoff for body builders, but seriously, who among the cycling crowd is really trying to get huge? The only real drawbacks are with the app’s user interface. During a workout, you can pause it, but there’s no way to rewind it. The instructions move quickly, and it’s easy to miss their tutorial while you’re getting set up. It could also use a search function, making it easier to find, say, all workouts for a certain body part.

Lastly, there’s only one login/account per subscription…which means for a family, you’ll need to pony up for the $39/month family plan if you want to track everybody individually . Personally, I don’t mind if Kristi’s workout data mixes with mine. I know what I did, she knows what she did. But, if you pay up front for a year’s family subscription, you get a free set of NordicTrack Speedweight adjustable dumbbells ($399 MSRP) and iFit Vue activity tracking wearable ($129 MSRP). Individual subscriptions come with only the Vue when paid annually.

PRICING & DELIVERY

the best home gym for cyclists and endurance athletes

Current retail is $1,599 and includes the Fusion CST main unit with built-in tablet holder, a separate freestanding tablet stand, six handles, two ankle straps, the Portal 10″ Android tablet, Bluetooth HR strap, power cord, and workout poster. They offer several financing options that bundle 18 to 36 months of iFit Coach Premium subscription and a 3-year extended warranty into the price.

NordicTrack Fusion CST white glove home delivery and assembly review

Base price includes delivery to the curb. They offer in-home delivery for $99 more, and full white glove in-home assembly, set up and packaging removal for $249. They sent it to us with the latter service, which is awesome because it’s big. And super heavy. As in, really, really heavy and you’ll need a hand truck to move it. One caveat: Make sure they get all of the parts out of the box…ours was missing the tablet, which we think was simply overlooked in the unpacking process (they promptly sent a replacement).

A PERFECT COMPLEMENT TO RIDING?

NordicTrack Fusion CST home gym review and tech details

As much as Crossfit might promote muscular endurance, doing jump squats and lunges won’t make up for time on the bike. But, despite using the Fusion a lot and riding less, I did manage to get 3rd, 4th and 5th places in some of my cyclocross races. And I’m feeling stronger on the bike than my riding hours would explain. Building strength means you’re using a smaller percentage of your available output on each pedal stroke, so while my endurance might not match a real racer’s, my max power output isn’t too bad. So I can hang on group rides.

The other benefit to cyclists is that you can add real resistance to non-forward-linear movements. Or work your hamstrings. The Fusion CST makes it easy to do lateral hip work and leg curls, two things that are underworked during cycling. Again, muscular imbalances are bad, m’kay? This fixes them.

While you don’t neeeed the iFit Coach subscription to use the Fusion CST, it really does turn the equipment into a legitimate cross training platform. At $15 per month, this could be your 2nd sub behind Zwift, The Sufferfest or TrainerRoad. If you’re investing in cycling training, it’s worth investing in total body conditioning for you and your family, too, right?

Most of all, what we (as a family) like about the NordicTrack Fusion CST is how quick, easy and fun it makes to get a solid workout. Definitely worth a look if your idea of fitness goes beyond the bike, especially if you really, really don’t want to go to a gym.

The fact that people don’t know how to work out in the most basic form (running and weights) makes me sad. It really says something about our culture.

I don’t expect everyone to be an athlete, but basic strength training and gym coaching (for running, sprinting, etc) should be mandatory through high school (maybe it still is?) Kids can be cruel though and those that are less corrdinated tend to remove themselves which is likely the group that will benefit the most, long term, from good coaching and learning/realizing the beauty of maintaining fitness and your human body. It’s easily the most amazing overall “machine” I’ve ever known in overall ability and to not use it is sad.

Where in this article does it say or indicate that people don’t know how to work out in the most basic form? Where does it say that running and weight lifting are the only acceptable forms of exercise? Is this something we’re supposed to be judging people on?

“One of the stumbling blocks for people who have never worked out before is that they don’t know how to workout”

I’m not judging anyone and that is not the intent. Neither are those the only acceptable forms of exercise but running is the most basic human movement besides walking and lifting a weight is the same…both require little to no equipment and can be taught to anyone regardless of ability or income. The physical and mental skills learned by simple exercise coaching lasts a lifetime with far reaching benefits and wide application to other sport/exercise. It’s why adults encourage sports in kids even if we know they won’t be Olympians/pros or anywhere close to that ability.

And obviously certain disabilities will prevent running…but we have and should encourage sports in those adolescents too as they benefit the same.

It’s not judging, the use and ability to use your able body is a gift which shouldn’t be wasted.

Agreed. Though looking back on my high school “weight lifting” class, I hope that any modern curriculum has been thoroughly updated to teach proper form and not get newbies to constantly be maxing out to gauge performance. That’s how they graded us 20+ years ago, and talking to current teacher friends that use their high schools’ gyms, they say the kids these days are trying to emulate Crossfit and power lifting moves without any formal training on technique, which is a recipe for disaster. And broken bodies in the long run.

The green wall makes me sad…

I like the green wall.

But what’s with all the bike crap you have lying all around the room? Are you into cycling or something?

The green wall makes me happy. How about that hardwood floor? It looks impeccably clean!

James

While I understand the reasoning behind this product, I can’t help but think about cost benefits of doing all the same exercises in the gym for $10 – $20 a month using the cable machines and whatnot. Plus one can also do those 300lb deadlifts which are not exactly substitutable with a machine.

Gerald

Where can you find a gym membership for $10 a month? Did you time travel here from the year 1989?

onrhodes

Planet Fitness….usually run a $99 a year thing right around the start of the year.

networkman

Maybe if you used the other workout equipment you have lying around you would be in shape already. You also have the nicest shop floor I’ve ever seen. Ninja Turtles on the wall for motivation ??

Fred Gravelly

BR, would you like to do a story on the weed I (may or may not) have for sale? It enhances almost every bicycle ride and it helps you not worry about things like watts, ceramic pulleys or the latest gravel specific shoe-lace. One of the stumbling blocks for people who don’t partake is that they don’t know how to lighten up

BT

Sweet ninja turtle pictures!

Christian Messerschmidt

Hey there, totally agree with your assessment, as a lifetime runner, I had always neglected this aspect of training because of the imbalances and lack of motivation to stick to a regime as well as fear of injury from free weights, this is a revelation for me, really like it a lot. as for the inflated subscription prices, I was grandfathered into my basic ifit subscription from my wife’s elliptical which brings the price down big time. best piece of equipment ever.

BUY: NordicTrack Fusion CST

A Closer Look at NordicTrack Fusion CST

Several home gym machines require a large area for storage and even more space while in use. And while the NordicTrack Fusion CST is not considered small, it is one of the more reasonably sized machines on the market. When fully assembled, the Fusion CST measures 73.5 inches tall by 60.5 inches wide by 41.5 inches deep. In general, NordicTrack suggests users have about six feet of space surrounding the machine.

The NordicTrack Fusion CST is not a light machine. Weighing close to 400 pounds, this exercise equipment is not something you'll want to move very often. That's why the moderate-sized footprint is a definite positive of this home gym trainer.

Resistance Levels

NordicTrack Fusion CST uses Silent Magnetic Resistance instead of weight stacks. The CST has resistance settings ranging from 1 to 20 and uses an inertia-enhanced flywheel for a smooth workout. When streaming an iFIT class, the Fusion CST will automatically adjust resistance levels based on trainer cues, allowing you to focus on working out.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Construction

The NordicTrack Fusion CST is constructed with a heavy-duty solid frame that is close to 400 pounds when fully assembled. The heavy freestanding base ensures stability no matter how hard you pull, and the sturdy, high-tech frame makes it suitable to do high-intensity strength-training workouts. Because of the size and weight of the Fusion CST, assembly requires two to three people.

The Fusion CST engineering includes an inertia-enhanced flywheel, similar to what you might see on a NordicTrack exercise bike. This technology allows for smooth movements when pulling on the cables. The Fusion CST has six total pulleys divided between upper, mid, and lower levels to increase the variety of workouts. However, unlike cable machines you see at the gym, these pulleys are not adjustable. It also has 95" independent cable travel, which is plenty of length to accommodate a variety of user heights.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Highlights

  • Interactive tablet: One feature that sets the Fusion CST apart from its competitors is the 10-inch interactive tablet. This multi-functional screen allows you to stream iFIT workouts and track fitness data.
  • Adjustable independent tablet and smartphone stand: You'll also get an adjustable, freestanding tablet stand that is moveable so you can put the tablet anywhere you want.
  • Warranty: The Fusion CST comes with a generous 10-year frame warranty and a one-year parts and labor warranty.
  • iFIT: iFIT is an interactive fitness training platform. With an iFIT subscription, you'll have access to thousands of classes and workouts led by expert instructors. The workout library includes sessions for beginners, strength training, HIIT training, Bootcamp, cross-training, and more. Plus, you can stream classes on your time, making it easier to fit into a busy schedule. An individual iFIT subscription costs $15 per month or $180 per year, while a family plan costs $39 per month or $396 per year.
  • AutoAdjust: When using the iFIT interactive workouts, the Fusion CST can go into AutoAdjust mode, which means the machine automatically adjusts resistance levels based on instructor cues. This is a feature unique to iFIT-enabled machines.
  • Silent Magnetic Resistance: The NordicTrack Fusion CST features magnetic resistance which allows for a quiet, seamless experience while working out.
  • Accessories: The Fusion CST comes with six precision cable ends, integrated ergonomic removable handles, two ankle straps, two squat pulleys, and an iFIT Bluetooth chest strap for monitoring your heart rate.

Our Verdict

Overall, the NordicTrack Fusion CST is a superior product that targets a wide variety of strength-building exercises for the entire body. This mid-priced resistance machine is a good investment if you're looking for a functional home gym with interactive programming. That said, the programming requires a monthly iFIT membership after the 30-day trial. But we recommend the membership since it unlocks the classes and workouts and allows for an interactive experience.

FAQs About the NordicTrack Fusion CST

Is a nordictrack fusion cst worth it.

Whether or not the NordicTrack Fusion CST is worth it comes down to your budget, goals, and space. If you're looking for a quiet home gym that offers resistance exercises for the entire body, then the CST Fusion is a solid investment. But if you want a machine that mimics traditional equipment like dumbbells, barbells, or strength equipment, this may not be the right home gym for you.

What is the difference between Fusion CST and Fusion CST Studio?

The Fusion CST and Fusion CST Studio are very similar products, with one significant difference. The Fusion CST Studio comes with a full-length 70-inch by 15-inch mirror on the front so you can monitor your form while performing resistance training exercises. Because of the added mirror, the cost is also higher. The Fusion CST Studio starts at $2,499.

Can you bench press on the Fusion CST?

The Fusion CST is a standing cable machine. Because of the design, you can't do a traditional supine or face-up reclined body position bench press. That said, you can perform standing chest exercises that target the same muscles.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio Review 2024

Why You Should Trust Our Review Of NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio

We’ve tested pretty much every piece of equipment from NordicTrack, over the years. Even though we don’t have the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio yet, we have a great idea of how it functions, performs, and the features it includes. We’ve been using iFit as one of our main training programs for years, and iFit is a large component of this machine. We also have reviewed other smart fitness machines like the Tonal and Vitruvian Trainer+ . We’ve relied on this experience to help us compile this spec review of the Fusion CST Studio.

  • This is a strength cable system with 6 different pulleys for various exercises with 10 lbs up to 100 lbs of resistance.
  • It comes with a 10” tablet to use on the mirror or on the included stand to stream Fusion CST Studio workouts from iFit with a subscription.
  • It’s freestanding and doesn’t require being mounted to the wall.
  • The workouts are instructor-led and the mirror allows you to watch your form which can be helpful for beginners.
  • It’s an all-in-one machine that comes with handles and ankle straps.
  • It’s heavy, hard to move, and requires a designated space to use.
  • iFit’s entire workout library isn’t accessible on the Fusion, only classes filmed with the Fusion are.
  • The weight offered might not be enough for some people and the eccentric portion of exercises doesn’t offer as much resistance.

NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio Review

In-depth Review of NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio

iFit is a popular training platform available to use on fitness equipment from brands like NordicTrack and ProForm. iFit has thousands of workouts available to take on demand in a variety of disciplines including running, walking, cycling, and strength training.

On the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio, however, the workouts available to follow along with are specific to the Fusion. This means that they’re filmed specifically in studios where the instructor is using the Fusion CST.

There are guided workouts led by instructors and the ability to use the manual mode to do your own thing. There are also workout programs, so you can take a series of classes over a period of time to progress your fitness.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to access other workouts, even other strength workouts using free weights on the Fusion CST Studio. The library of the Fusion workouts is also much less than iFit’s regular library of indoor and outdoor-filmed trainer-led classes. You do get access to these workouts in the iFit App and on other iFit-enabled equipment, so the Fusion CST Studio might be a good idea if you already use iFit and have other NordicTrack equipment in your home.

One aspect that we really like about iFit is that the equipment automatically adjusts as you’re taking a workout. This means that the Fusion CST Studio will adjust the resistance based on the instructor’s cues. iFit also takes into account your previous workout history and how you performed in prior workouts to adjust the tension to work for you, specifically.

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio comes with a 10” tablet. This is where you stream iFit’s Fusion workouts. What’s cool about the tablet is that you can put it on the mirrored front of the Fusion CST Studio or put it on the standalone device stand. A magnetic device rack sticks on the mirror and can be adjusted to whatever height you want, and you can move the stand around you to see the tablet for exercises where you’re facing away from it.

The tablet only streams the iFit workouts available with a subscription, it isn’t a tablet to use for streaming other content, as far as we know. The tablet is where you’ll track your workout metrics.

You can adjust the resistance on the Fusion, in case you don’t want to use the AutoAdjust feature that I mentioned earlier. Other than the device racks, there isn’t any storage available for your water on the Fusion CST Studio.

Construction

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is a very heavy-duty machine with a large footprint. It weighs a whopping 378 lbs, so it might not be best on upper-level floors, and moving it around is most likely a challenge that requires multiple people. With its size and weight, we recommend having a designated space for the Fusion CST Studio to stay. It also doesn’t appear to have transport wheels so it’s probably pretty hard to move.

Frame & Mirror

The Fusion CST Studio is a freestanding strength training machine. It doesn’t need to be mounted to the wall like the Tonal, but it doesn’t require a good amount of floor space to use. You want to be sure you have enough room for the footprint and some space in front of it for you to do various workouts.

The steel base supports the bottom of the mirror and the entire machine. The floor stabilizers flare out in front to provide a good base of support. With this design, you shouldn’t have to worry about the Fusion tipping over.

The mirror on the front is the height of the machine at 70” high and 15” wide. It should be tall enough for users of all heights to see their entire reflections. The width of the mirror is a little narrow, so you’ll have to stand back a bit to see your reflection better. During some exercises like side lunges, your reflection might be cut off. We have similar problems when using the NordicTrack Vault which is a tall mirror that isn’t very wide.

The mirror serves as a way for you to check in with your form as you workout. There isn’t any AI form correction built in, like the Tonal for added safety, so just keep this in mind. There are other components that I’ll get into that contribute to the safety features.

Pulleys & Cables

The Fusion CST Studio has 6 different cables attached to pulleys. The top two are great for exercises like tricep pushdowns, and the bottom two are ideal for exercises like glute kickbacks. The middle cables are on safety spotter arms that extend on either side of the Fusion. These cables make cable chest presses convenient.

Each cable is long enough to give you a full range of motion for each exercise. The pulleys and cables make the Fusion CST Studio function similarly to a cable machine you’d use in a weight room. The cables are controlled by a flywheel at the rear of the machine. This is where you get resistance on each cable, which I’ll get into in a moment.

Removable Handles & Ankle Straps

Each cable has a clip so you can swap between attaching the included handles and ankle straps. The ankle straps are best for the lower cables. I like that multiple handles are included, so you don’t need to worry about having to clip each handle to each cable. Instead, there are 6 handles for each cable, you just have to swap out the lower handles for the ankle straps when you want to use them.

The handles look to be pretty smooth, but they should give you a good grip. The ankle straps are velcro so you can get a good fit with those, too.

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio uses adjustable magnetic resistance. The flywheel at the back of the machine is what provides the resistance. It should also make it feel smooth and we anticipate the Fusion to be pretty quiet. We won’t know exactly how quiet and smooth it is until we get it into our studio though.

The resistance is adjustable to provide 10-100 lbs of resistance. The resistance levels are numbered from 1 up to 20. This should be a good weight range for beginners and intermediates, but for more seasoned lifters, you’ll probably want more resistance.

Another thing to consider is that during the eccentric portions of exercises, where the muscles lengthen, the resistance is lighter. The eccentric portion of a squat for example is when you’re lowering, so you feel less resistance on the way down and more on the way up during the concentric portion of the exercise. This is because of the way the flywheel works since it only moves in one direction.

Eccentric training is said to be better for helping to increase your muscle mass, but you’ll still get a good amount of tension using the Fusion CST Studio. It should also be a great way to incorporate HIIT cardio training and strength training into your routine for an all-in-one machine. The fact that the Fusion Studio loads and unloads the weight at different portions of each exercise should help to make the overall machine a little safer, too.

NordicTrack includes their standard 10-year frame warranty with the purchase of the Fusion CST Studio. A 1-year parts, labor, and tablet warranty are also included.

Bottom Line Review: NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio

The NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio is a large and heavy cable machine with some nice features included and built-in. First, this strength training machine comes with a tablet to stream Fusion-specific workouts with a subscription to iFit. It also has a full-length mirror attached so you can check in with your form while following along with an instructor. The Fusion CST Studio has 6 different cables to do all kinds of workouts. Each cable comes with a handle and there are 2 ankle straps to use, too. The Fusion uses adjustable magnetic resistance that’s controlled by a flywheel so it should be pretty smooth and quiet to use. It lets you lift 10-100 lbs of resistance, which should be great for beginners and intermediate lifters. We also recommend checking out the NordicTrack Fusion CST Studio if you love trainer-led content or if you have other iFit-enabled workout equipment. Related Reviews:

Love the machine but Ifit has never updated the CST app since 2021 according to my machines system logs and has it marked up to date. It’s impossible to do a whole workout series due to loading errors. But the machine itself is way better than a Bowflex or similar. So far the subscription service has not been worth it. I do love IFits other app for the elliptical, being able to run using Google Maps is awesome.

We may earn a commission from the companies mentioned in this post.

Buying workout equipment has and will always be an investment in your health. With an increasing number of people recognizing the benefits and convenience of working out at home, more and more people are looking to make significant investments in their home gym setup. This is backed by a survey that showed 63 percent of Americans who exercise regularly would prefer a mix of working out at the gym and home [1].

This is leading to a boom in the marketplace with more brands introducing innovative products. It’s easy to say, there has never been a better time to be in the market for home gym equipment. Not only is the equipment more advanced than ever, but it’s not too expensive compared to older complete home gyms.

For those looking for a complete home gym, both Tonal and NordicTrack’s Fusion CST stand out . By the end of this comparison, you should be in a good place to pick the right home gym equipment to invest in.

Features Compare: What Tonal and Fusion CST Offer

1. nordictrack fusion cst.

The Fusion CST by NordicTrack is another good option you could consider. Here are some standout features and benefits of the Fusion CST.

  • Strength and Cardio

The Fusion CST is a 2-in-1 machine. It’s designed to be for both strength training and cardio in the form of high-intensity strength training. As far as strength training is concerned, it delivers 20 intense power levels that will help you boost your strength as you continue to use it. Having 20 digital power resistance levels ensures that you won’t outgrow the machine and that you will continue to benefit from using it long after you start. The machine uses silent magnetic resistance which means you are getting both silent and smooth operations. This ensures that you don’t have something that makes too much noise in your home which is an important aspect among a lot of home gym consumers.

  • Live Interactive Technology

One of the cool things about the Fusion CST is that it features interactive technology built-in. While you’re following along with the workouts, you will be able to get real-time digital adjustments from the expert trainers to ensure that you are always pushing yourself to your limits and so you get the most out of every workout. This is something that a lot of people benefit from by getting personal training at the gym that you don’t normally get at home. A personal trainer is likely to push you to uncomfortable levels. Now they can do it virtually with the built-in live interactive technology to ensure you’re always pushing yourself to get stronger and reach your fitness goals.

  • Live or On-Demand Classes

2. Tonal Unique Features and Benefits

Tonal has a lot to offer someone who is looking for a good all-purpose workout system. Here are some of the key features and benefits of Tonal.

  • Complete Gym

One of the things that you don’t notice at first is how comprehensive of a workout Tonal can offer. At first glance, you might assume it’s limited in scope to upper body exercises. However, that’s not the case. This product delivers both upper body and lower body workouts with its patented digital weight system. This means you’ll be able to replace your leg day gym sessions that you normally had to venture out to your nearest gym to get in. With Tonal, you’re getting a complete and total body workout that you can count on to progress with you on your fitness journey.

  • Machine Learning For Personalized Improvements

One of the revolutionary features of the Tonal gym has to be its machine learning integration. One of the biggest issues a lot of people are faced with when it comes to getting effective workouts at home is not knowing where to start, how to design workout plans, and how to execute exercises. Tonal took notes and delivered a workout system that takes the guesswork out of strength training and working out. Powered by artificial intelligence, you’ll be able to get real-time adjustments to your strength as you work out. All of this is done automatically without any manual interference. This ensures that your workouts are as effective and as safe as they need to be for you to reach your fitness goals.

  • Professional Coaching

One of the things a lot of people enjoy about going to the gym is having access to personal trainers. After all, not many people have the experience needed to know where to begin. No matter what your fitness goals are, you’ll be able to find expert-led programs that you can leverage using Tonal. This will enable you to go through programs step by step as you look towards reaching your fitness goals.

  • Real-Time Feedback

This is another major area of concern whenever you are getting started with working out with weights or doing any kind of strength training. After all, a lot of people end up getting hurt for executing exercises with improper form. It’s very easy to find yourself compensating for muscle weaknesses or muscle atrophy and using bad form. This is especially true if you don’t know what good form is, to begin with. With Tonal, you’ll be able to get real-time form feedback. Tonal has 17 different sensors that will both analyze and correct your form. This can keep you from getting injured and ensure that you’re always getting everything possible out of your workouts.

  • Small Footprint

Something nearly every consumer wants when they are buying home gym equipment is a small footprint. After all, if you are going to be using the home gym equipment in your home, you don’t want it to take up too much space. A lot of the home gym equipment is impractical because it takes up far too much space. Tonal has very few space requirements as it’s hung on the wall. Therefore, all you need is a free wall that has two studs and you won’t have to worry about taking up floor space. With other equipment, you either have to take up floor space at all times or worry about folding and tucking the equipment somewhere while it’s not in use. With Tonal, you don’t have to worry about any of this as it’s always out of the way.

  • Touchscreen Display

The Tonal comes with an integrated 24-inch interactive display that you can use to watch your coaches and to track your progress.

This is crucial for someone who is looking for more handholding during their workouts to improve the effectiveness of it and even the safety of it. Tonal’s built-in artificial intelligence will keep you from having to worry about counting reps, setting the right weights for different exercises, and more. All you need to do is show up and work out, much like you would at the gym.

  • In-Person Partner Workouts

With Tonal, you can grab your partner or a friend and work out together. You aren’t limited to working out alone. Tonal can adjust when working out with a friend and it will track the results, as well.

  • Virtual Workouts

With Tonal, you aren’t limited to working out with a friend or partner in person. You could potentially work out with someone that has a Tonal too. This makes it the ideal option for those who have a friend or multiple friends with a Tonal.

  • No Equipment Needed

As mentioned, the Tonal gym is complete. It requires absolutely nothing else. The system is designed to deliver as much as 200 pounds of digital resistance in a device that is smaller than a flatscreen television. You can add additional Tonal smart accessories that include everything from smart handles, smart bars, ropes, rollers, a bench, and a mat. However, none of this is necessary to get the most out of your Tonal gym.

2. NordicTrack Workout Options

You Should Pick Fusion CST if…

If you are shopping on a budget and you are looking to save money, you can’t go wrong with NordicTrack’s Fusion CST. You are getting a complete home gym for a reduced price and it’s delivering a similar type of experience.

  • You Want On-Demand Classes

If you want live classes, you are going to want NordicTrack’s Fusion CST because you can leverage iFit’s interactive personal training.

  • You Don’t Need To Save Too Much Space

With the Fusion CST, it’s not going to be too bulky, but it’s much bigger and has a much larger footprint than the Tonal. If you can live with this trade-off, it’s a good buy.

  • You Have Other iFit Enabled Equipment

If you have other iFit enabled equipment, you are going to want to add the Fusion CST to the mix. iFit offers an exceptional value especially if you are invested in the ecosystem.

  • You Want Built-In Heart Rate Monitoring

The Fusion CST has built-in heart rate monitoring. You can use the included Bluetooth-enabled chest strap which will help you get through your workouts by reaching your target zones to improve the effectiveness of your workouts.

You Should Pick Tonal if…

  • You Want The Best Strength Training Experience

If you are fixated on trying to get live workouts, you’ll want to opt for something other than the Tonal. Tonal only has on-demand videos that you can use for your workouts.

  • You Want To Save The Most Space

Tonal does this much better than NordicTrack. With the Tonal, you get a complete workout system in a device that is smaller than a modern flatscreen television. This alone makes it worthy of consideration for a lot of consumers because not everyone has a lot of space to place a bulky home gym.

  • You Don’t Mind Spending More

The Tonal is going to cost more than the Fusion CST. Therefore, you may have to be willing and able to stretch your budget.

  • You Want Tonal’s Proprietary Digital Weight Technology
