Travelers Palm Tree in the landscape

Travelers Palm Tree, scientific name Ravenala madagascariensis, is one of the most recognizable palm trees in the world for its spectacular fronds that range in color from orange to yellow to green.  It can adapt to a wide range of soils. Travelers Palm Tree can create a wonderful shaded area in the yard or by the pool.

Travelers Palm Tree File

Scientific name : Ravenala madagascariensis

Common names : The Travelers Palm is also known as Travelers Palm and Traveler’s Tree.

Family : Arecaceae

Origin : It is native to Madagascar.

Appearance : Young Travelers Palm has a subterranean trunk that grows underground. As the palm matures it develops a short green trunk, about 1 ft in diameter, with distinctive leaf scar rings.

The Travelers Palm has about 30-35 large,10 ft long, fan-shaped leaves supported by long petioles. Leaves resemble those of the banana and are symmetrically grouped, giving the tree the aspect of a hand fan. High winds can shred the leaves giving them a feather-like appearance. Leaf stems color varies from orange at the base of the stem to yellow in the middle and to the bright green closer to the end.

Leaf stems can store a lot of rainwater that can be used as an emergency drinking supply during drought. There are a lot of stories of travelers looking for the palm to get some water, hence the name Travelers Palm.

Flowers/Fruits : The Travelers Palm produces white flowers, supported by a large green flower stalk. Flowers can be as large as 2ft in diameter. Leaf stalks look like a narrow bowl and collect a lot of rainwater making it very heavy. Bloomed flowers are followed by brown fruits that open to reveal stunning bright blue seeds inside.

Growth Rate : Moderate.  Ravenala madagascariensis grows at a medium rate up to 30-40 ft tall with 10-15 ft wide spread.

Outdoor/Indoor Use : Both.

Cold Tolerance : Travelers Palm Tree is one of the most awe-inspiring natural palms in the world that can tolerate cold temperatures down to 20F. Grows best in USDA Zones 9a (20 to 25 F) to 11 (above 40 F).

Light Req : It likes full sun but can also grow in light shade.

Water Req : Moderate. Grows best in moist, well-drained soil. Native to Madagascar, Travelers Palm Tree easily adapts to a wide range of soils and makes a great centerpiece for any area or landscape. It tolerates sandy and clayey soils.

Maintenance : Easy. To prevent nutritional deficiency, apply  good quality palm fertilizer  that has continuous release formula twice a year during the growing season.

Propagation : Propagated by seeds or a division of clumps.

Scientific Name: Ravenala madagascariensis

Common names: travelers tree, travelers palm.

Overview: The Ravenala Madagascariensis or Travelers Palm is not a palm at all, but part of a flowering plant family native to Madagascar. The Travelers Palm grows to be enormous, truly a centerpiece for your landscaping with its huge leaves sprouting from long stems in a glorious fan-shaped pattern.

These storied trees have tales folks love to share about them. Here’s a true one: a parched traveler can poke a hole almost anywhere on this “palm” and find clean drinking water. And here’s a false one:  the plant’s leaves will always grow in an east-west direction, so a lost traveler can find their way.

Best in full sun areas with a moderate amount of water, these trees grow tall – quickly! However, once a trunk begins to develop, the growth rate slows to a more moderate pace.

A PALM-LIKE IMPOSTER RELATED TO BANANAS & BIRDS OF PARADISE

Travelers tree is one of the unique plants out there. Not only does it have a unique shape, but the colors are also out of the ordinary. This plant is also known as Travelers Palm, but it is not a true palm. It is a member of the Strelitziaceae family, which includes Banana Trees and the Bird of Paradise. The plant’s name comes from its history, where travelers used it to gather water. They would collect rainwater from the bracts and the leaf bases.

The Travelers Palm is a tropical plant, native to the rainforests of Madagascar.

Caring for your Travelers Palm

The Travelers Tree is best suited for warmer climates as it is a tropical plant, and if you want to ensure that it grows to its full potential, you must take good care of it. This plant is typically tall and can grow up to 30-50 feet. This care guide will help you learn all the best ways to take care of it.

The Ravenala Madagascariensis is a large tree, and it loves enjoying the bright and direct sunlight. You can keep it in the sunroom, or you can keep it in front of a south-facing window. It is important to give the plant maximum light, or it will have stunted growth.

When selecting the soil for your plant, you must ensure that it is rich and loamy. The acidity levels should be mild to give optimal conditions for your plant. Moreover, well-draining soil may not be the best option. Instead, you should go for soil that retains water but does not get clogged up. A standard potting mix will do wonders for your plant. You can also include things such as compost, which will help increase drainage.

As the Travelers Palm is from the rainforest, it enjoys being moist most of the time. This is why you should keep watering it regularly, so it does not have to tolerate dry soil. During each watering cycle, you need to ensure that the top two inches of the soil are dry so you do not overwater them.

The Travelers Palm enjoys fertilizers that are high in Nitrogen. It is a good idea to fertilize your plant once every season, except in winter. The best fertilizers include slow-release and liquid feeds that may be organic or synthetic. Avoid adding too much fertilizer, as that can damage plants.

Common Issues

The leaves of the plant are frail, making them more susceptible to damage. When taking care of plants, you must ensure that you cater to all the common issues you might face. Try to shield the plant from high winds, as that can harm the leaves. Let’s learn more about the pests and diseases you must be careful of when keeping a traveler’s palm.

On the whole, the Travelers Tree is pest resistant, and there are no such pest issues that can cause significant damage to the plant. But it is still susceptible to all the pests that can harm indoor plants. To prevent that from happening, you can add pesticides.

Some of the diseases include the leaves of the plant turning yellow. This usually happens due to a lack of nutrients, or if you end up over-watering the plant. Moreover, it is also possible for the leaves to turn brown. Brown leaves are a sign of over-fertilization and if the soil does not have good drainage.

Other than these problems, there are not many diseases that can affect the Travelers Tree. It is considered to be disease resistant.

There is no evident need to prune the Travelers Palm, but if you want to remove the root suckers from the base of the tree, you can prune it. Moreover, if you want to boost branching, you can cut off the tip of the stem, and the branch will break into two on its own.

Propagation

The best way to propagate the Travelers Palm is to propagate it using division. All you need to do is simply separate the rooted suckers. You can tug at them gently, and then replant them however you want. If the roots are tangled, you will have to gently untangle them and plant the Travelers Tree in well-aerated soil to ensure it is moist.

Potting/Repotting

You should only repot the plant if you see that the roots are poking through the drainage holes. Usually, you will need to repot your plants once every year. When you repot the plant, you must choose a few inches bigger pot than the previous one.

ABOUT THIS PALM Giant Hawaiian Travelers Palm Tree (ravenala madagascariensis) – Travelers Palm is one of natures most recognized and remarkable plants. A mature travelers palm may bloom year round and produce brown fruits that contain light blue seeds. The travelers palm gets its name from the fact that thirsty travelers could find stores of water in many parts of the plant. The growth rate of Hawaiian Travelers Palms will vary greatly depending on soil type, sunlight, temperature and other factors. A few leaves are often trimmed prior to shipping to reduce transpiration and travel stress.

PALM TREE CARE Hawaiian Travelers Palms are easy to grow trees that require little care. They add a wonderful accent to any outdoor space, garden or patio. In cooler zones a containerized palm can be relocated indoors for the winter months. In the northern end of their grow zone Hawaiian Travelers Palms require indoor protection or heavy mulching during the winter months. When you receive your new palm, there is no need to worry about planting right away. Your new plant can be stored for a while by simply placing it in a bucket with about a half inch of water in the bottom and moving it to a shady location. You can then add some mulch to the bucket to keep your plant standing upright. The mulch will also supply nutrients while in storage. This will give you plenty of time to select the ideal location for your new palm.

CONTAINER SIZE All palm varieties grow very well in containers, indoors or on the patio. Allow enough room for growth generally a 10″ to a 20″ diameter, 10″ deep container will suffice to get started. Remember the looser the roots, the taller and healthier your palm will be. When the plant becomes root bound its growth will slow, at that point it is time for a larger pot.

SOIL Hawaiian Travelers Palms enjoy well drained but moist, rich organic mix. Remember try to stay away from wet, mucky or arid soils.

FERTILIZER To help establish your new Hawaiian Travelers Palm, fertilize sparingly at least 6 inches away from the base, tri-annually with a slow time released product. Unfertilized they will tend to grow at a slower pace. Note:  The heavy salts in cheaper fertilizers will damage the roots and possibly kill the tree. Its best to use a brand you know and trust.

GROW ZONE & LIGHT Best outdoors if grown in zone 10a-11, find your zone here. This Palm requires 80-100% sunlight. Depending on your location full sun is often best. In the northern end of their grow zone Hawaiian Travelers Palms should be brought indoors or protected during the winter months. The patio zone is 4b-11 which means the potted plant will flourish over the summer months in colder zones but must be brought inside before winter.

BEFORE YOU PLANT OUTDOORS At the nursery these palms are grown under 20-40% shade cloth. If you plant this palm in a brightly lit area you may experience leaf burn. It is best to acclimate this plant to its environment by keeping it outside and slowly moving it into a sunny area over a week or two to avoid stress before planting.

Before leaving, Hawaiian Travelers Palms are inspected, watered, and pruned. Larger plants, generally those that ship in 8″ pots, will be topped to 36″ or 48″ overall, depending on the variety, if necessary, to facilitate shipping. Your new plants’ pot is then bagged to ensure that the soil stays in the pot and not loose in the box. Plants are tissue or kraft paper wrapped and generally secured in place with natural biodegradable peanuts.

Travelers Palm Care: Tips On Growing Ravenala Madagascariens

Tropical plants provide some of the most interesting conversation pieces due to their vibrant colors and unique shapes.

The Travelers Palm, aka  Ravenala madagascariensis  (ra-VEN-ah-la mad-uh-gas-KAR-ee-EN-sis) is a perfect example of both.

Attractive fronds and foliage of the Travelers palm Ravenala madagascariensis

Known best by the common name traveler’s palm, this fan-shaped broadleaf evergreen isn’t actually a true palm but a member of the  Strelitziaceae  family, aka  White Bird of Paradise .

Other common names are traveler’s tree and east-west palm (in the US, the common names may have the alternate spelling of traveler’s palm or traveler’s tree).

The names refer to its use by travelers as a source of fresh water, who gather rainwater from the leaf bases and bracts.

As its scientific name suggests, this tree hails from the rainforests of Madagascar. There are four subspecies, which are generally referred to in botanical circles by their local names.

  • Bemavo  is the largest and most natively common variety.
  • Hiranirana  is found wherever breaks in the rainforest occur.
  • Malama  is the rarest of the four
  • Horonorona  is the smallest and is commonly cultivated as an ornamental perennial.

Agave Flower Grooming And Maintenance

Travelers palm care, traveler palm size and growth.

Horonorona , the variant most commonly cultivated, achieves an average adult height of 30 to 50’ feet tall. By comparison, its largest kin,  Bemavo , may achieve a height of 100’ feet.

The central trunk of this species can measure up to 12” inches in diameter and lacks branches.

The fan comprises of a single, vertical plane of petioles ending in 20 to 30 banana-like leaves. The leaves measure 5′ to 10’ feet long and 2′ to 3’ feet wide, with the petioles matching or exceeding the leaf length.

Because of the immense width and height proportions, this is one of those South Florida “palms” that work best in more expansive landscapes and with larger homes.

The cupped bases of each leaf stalk can retain as much as a full quart of water, creating a source of drinking water for passers-by.

While young, the trunk is subterranean, leaving the fan at ground level. When it finally emerges, it sheds the lowest leaves, resulting in leaf scar rings.

Fan-shaped palm tree, vibrant green leaves, tropical setting.

These plants grow to be enormous, with huge leaves sprouting from long stems in a flat, fan-shaped pattern like a peacock’s tail.

At the base of the trunk, new shoots appear, with the leaves tightly curled up inside. Numerous suckers will sprout at different times from around the trunk’s base.

Being slow to develop, a traveler’s palm won’t flower until it’s ten years old. Once flowering begins, it will bloom mainly in summer but may produce flowers throughout the year.

The resulting seeds are edible, giving this plant quite a few practical uses.

The growth rate is fast until a trunk begins to develop. Then the plant settles into a nice, moderate pace.

Flowering and Fragrance

Travelers-tree is ideal for creating an exotic, tropical effect with its very large, banana-like leaves, each up to ten feet long and held in fan-shaped formation, and the unusual, small, creamy white flowers held erect in boat-shaped bracts.

During the summer months, the traveler’s palm produces continual white or chartreuse blooms, the nocturnal inflorescence opening every 2 to 3 days.

The exact number of open blooms will vary, with the three-petaled flowers emerging from boat-shaped spathes, giving them a similar appearance to the famous bird-of-paradise.

The leaves always grow in an east-west direction so a lost traveler can find his way. One that is – well, you decide: Stand in front and make a wish in good spirit – and the wish will come true.

This Bird of Paradise relative produces large amounts of nectar, which not only attracts pollinators but is an important food source for native lemurs.

Once fertilized, the flowers give way to 3 ½” inch wooden capsules filled with seeds covered in bright blue arils.

Light and Temperature

This tree loves a sunny spot, faring best when exposed to full sun. It can tolerate partial shade and do best when young in an area where the base stays somewhat shaded. Eventually, it will grow to a full sun height.

Tropical fan-shaped palm tree against blue sky.

East-west palm has a narrower temperature tolerance and should only be grown in USDA hardiness zones 10 to 11.

Temperatures dipping below 60° degrees Fahrenheit will begin to stress the tree, and anything below 40° degrees Fahrenheit can kill it.

Watering and Feeding

The Travelers palm needs soil that remains consistently moist due to its rainforest origins. However, you should be careful not to overwater the plant.

Travelers palms need regular water – another reason to keep the base in a partly shaded area while it’s young and getting established.

Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food Plus Outdoor & Indoor, 8 lbs

Although the plant is relatively disease resistant, a well-drained planting site produces the healthiest growth.

While some variants have been known to grow in poor soil, adding a nitrogen-rich fertilizer during the growing season will result in a healthier and faster-growing tree.

Avoid adding too much fertilizer, as that can damage plants.

Plant with top soil or organic peat moss added to the hole. Fertilize 3 times a year in spring, summer, and autumn using a quality all-purpose or palm fertilizer. Trim off outside leaf branches as needed (and as long as the plant is reachable).

Soil & Transplanting

A rich, loamy soil with neutral to mild acidity works best for travelers palm plants. The soil should be able to retain some water without becoming too wet.

Brown leaves are a sign of over-fertilization and if the soil does not have good drainage.

You should only repot the plant if you see that the roots are poking through the drainage holes.

Person on bench with large fan palm behind.

Pot the baby plant in moist, well-aerated soil, and ensure that the mother plant is properly covered back up in the soil.

A standard potting mix will do wonders for your plant. You can also include things such as compost, which will help increase drainage.

This tree doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. However, root suckers will create clusters of foliage if not removed, distorting the trademark shape of the agave flower.

How To Propagate Ravenala Madagascariensis

Traveler’s tree may be propagated by both seed and division. The quickest method is to locate rooted suckers, which grow near the main stem.

Tropical fan palm in sunlight.

Separate these at the beginning of the rainy season and plant them to get a head start on new growth.

The seeds require a little more effort. Plant them in moist, sandy soil and keep them at around 68° degrees Fahrenheit. Germination is a slow process for this plant.

Once the seedlings have reached two months of age, they may be transplanted into a rich, loamy soil.

Make sure they have full sun, and add some moss or other organic matter when transplanting to help ensure their roots stay moist.

Travelers Palm Pest or Disease Problems

Due to the frail nature of the leaves, this plant should be sheltered from high winds. It also fares poorly in drought conditions.

Some of the diseases include the leaves of the plant turning yellow. This usually happens due to a lack of nutrients, or if you end up over-watering the plant.

The plant is non-invasive, but has been known to host Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and is susceptible to various forms of leaf spot and root rot. Spider mites may also infest this tree.

While some parts of the Travelers Palm plant are edible, other parts are poisonous if consumed. Individuals with bee allergies should use caution around this plant, which attracts pollinators.

Suggested Uses For The Travelers Palm

Beyond the obvious visual appeal, traveler’s palm’s high nectar production attracts a wide range of pollinators. This not only includes nectar-feeding birds and insects, but some species of bat.

The bright blue seeds are edible and have a mealy consistency, while the arils have no flavor. Oil extracted from the seeds and their arils can be used for cooking and is midway between coconut butter and palm oil in composition.

Additionally, the plant’s ability to catch rainwater makes it a useful source of extra drinking water. Finally, the sap may be used to create sugar.

Parts of this plant have had a range of uses beyond the obvious ornamental value. The seed oil is considered antiseptic, while the leaves have been used in roofing and as a packing material.

The petioles and midribs are also used in construction as wall materials, while the bark makes good flooring for traditional huts.

Traveler’s palm is too large for the average garden but makes great accents for larger landscapes where it may be the central showpiece.

Growing as a container plant will help limit the tree’s size, but it cannot be easily moved for overwintering.

How to Grow the Travelers Palm Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis)

Travelers Palm Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis)

The Travelers Palm Tree, scientifically known as Ravenala madagascariensis , stands out as one of the world’s most recognizable palm trees, thanks to its stunning fronds that transition in color from orange to yellow to green.

It is native to the island of Madagascar, which is located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. It is not naturally found anywhere else in the world and is endemic to Madagascar.

This adaptable palm thrives in a wide range of soil types, making it a perfect choice for creating a delightful shaded area in your yard or by the pool.

Quick Facts:

Identifying characteristics of the travelers palm.

In its early stages, the Travelers Palm boasts a subterranean trunk that grows beneath the surface. As it matures, it develops a distinctive short green trunk, approximately 1 foot in diameter, adorned with unique leaf scar rings.

With approximately 30-35 large, fan-shaped leaves that reach lengths of up to 10 feet, this palm’s foliage bears a striking resemblance to banana leaves. These leaves are symmetrically grouped, lending the tree the appearance of a hand fan.

During high winds, the leaves can take on a feather-like appearance due to their shredding. The leaf stems exhibit a captivating gradient of color, ranging from orange at the base, transitioning to yellow in the middle, and culminating in a vibrant green nearer the tip.

An interesting feature of the Travelers Palm is its leaf stems’ ability to store a significant amount of rainwater, which can serve as an emergency drinking supply during droughts. The palm derives its name from numerous accounts of travelers seeking this tree as a source of water.

Flowers and Fruits of the Travelers

Travelers Palm Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis) seeds.

The Travelers Palm produces white flowers, supported by large green flower stalks, with some blossoms reaching sizes as large as 2 feet in diameter. The leaf stalks resemble narrow bowls, efficiently collecting rainwater and becoming quite heavy.

Following the blooming phase, brown fruits appear, opening to reveal stunningly bright blue seeds inside.

Caring for the Travelers Palm

Ravenala madagascariensis exhibits a medium growth rate, reaching heights of 40-60 feet and boasting a spread of 10-15 feet.

Remarkably, the Travelers Palm Tree can withstand cold temperatures down to 30°F, making it suitable for cultivation in USDA Zones 10a (30 – 35°F) to 11 (above 40°F). While it thrives in full sun, it can also adapt to light shade.

This palm thrives in moist, well-drained soil, and its adaptability extends to both sandy and clayey soils. Native to Madagascar, the Travelers Palm Tree effortlessly fits into various soil types and serves as an impressive centerpiece in any landscape.

To prevent nutritional deficiencies, it’s recommended to apply a high-quality palm fertilizer with a continuous-release formula twice a year during the growing season.

Propagation can be achieved through seeds or division of clumps, providing options for cultivating this captivating palm.

I need three 8′ travelers palms for the interior.

Looking for a couple of palm trees to be used outside a pool cage. Must be 4 to 5 feet high and thick at the bottom for real privacy. Thanks.

I’m trying to figure out how long it takes until the trunk becomes visible? We like the way it looks, but typically before it gets the trunk.

Travelers Palm Get ready for a giant of a plant - a "travelers tree" can grow very tall and takes up lots of space while young (before it grows a trunk).

The farther south in Florida you go the taller they can get. In northern areas they'll get about 30 feet high. Close to Miami they may reach 50 feet - or more.

Travelers Palm Planting & Care

The growth rate is fast until a trunk begins to develop. Then the plant settles into a nice, moderate pace.

These plants like full sun but can handle part shade, and do best when young in an area where the base stays somewhat shaded. Eventually it will grow into a full sun height.

Travelers do well in Zone 10 or coastal Zone 9B areas.

The trunk is solitary but occasionally offsets will form. These can be removed (though many people don't) to strengthen the main plant and keep its classic look. Flowers look similar to bird of paradise blooms.

Plant with top soil or organic peat moss added to the hole.

Fertilize 3 times a year in spring summer and autumn using a quality all-purpose or palm fertilizer.

Trim off outside leaf branches as needed (and as long as the plant is reachable).

Travelers palms need regular water - another reason to keep the base in a partly shaded area while it's young and getting established.

The beautiful and legendary travelers palm is actually not a palm at all, but spectacular palm-like imposter related to bananas and bird of paradise.

These plants grow to be enormous, with huge leaves sprouting from a long stems in a flat, fan-shaped pattern like a peacock's tail.

The leaf bases create an intricate, overlapping pattern.

The leaves collect rainwater which flows into the plant's stems, base, and even its flowers, ready to aid a thirsty traveler.

Though it will eventually grow a trunk, this plant needs a wide berth when young.

Because of the immense width and height proportions, this is one of those South Florida "palms" that work best in more expansive landscapes and with larger homes.

Get ready for a giant of a plant - a "travelers tree" can grow very tall and takes up lots of space while young (before it grows a trunk).

Given as a gift in the hopes of bringing prosperity to the recipient

Nutrient, fertilizer, and repotting needs for Traveller's palm: repot after 2X growth

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.

By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.

To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Traveller's palm after it doubles in size or once a year —whichever comes first.

The app says to water every 10 days. Is this accurate? The guy who I bought it from told me to water it every day. What’s the water usage for these plants? It’s a 15 gallon size

Just got these seeds my friend gave me these and i’m so excited any tips or tricks to help them sprout the only thing the package says is to take sandpaper to rough up the outer part of the seed and then put in peat moss but surely there’s more 😁.

travelers palm

Although travelers palm ( Ravenala madagascariensis ) displays big, fan-like leaves, the name is actually a bit of a misnomer, as travelers palm plants are actually more closely related to banana trees . This exotic plant produces small, creamy white flowers, which often appear year-round. Want to learn about growing travelers palm in your garden? Find out below.

Travelers Palm Hardiness

Travelers palm is definitely a tropical plant, suitable for growing in the warm climates of USDA plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Travelers palm plants may survive in zone 9, but only if they are well protected in the event of occasional frost.

How to Grow a Travelers Palm

Travelers palm plants tolerate sandy and clay-based soils but prefer moist, rich soil. Although the plant is relatively disease resistant, a well-drained planting site produces the healthiest growth. Provide shade for the base of the plants after planting. Once established, a sunny spot is best, but the travelers palm does fine with a little light shade. Provide shelter from strong winds, which may tear and tatter the huge leaves. This is a good-sized plant that reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet (9-15 m.) and sometimes even more, so provide plenty of space for travelers palm. Allow a minimum of 8 to 10 feet (2-3 m.) from a house or other structure, and 12 feet (4 m.) is even better. If you’re planting more than one, space them at least 8 to 10 feet (2-3 m.) apart to prevent crowding.

Caring for Travelers Palms

Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, but never soggy or waterlogged. Feed travelers palm plants once in spring, summer, and autumn, using a fertilizer formulated for tropical plants or palms. A good, all-purpose fertilizer is also acceptable. Prune outer leaf branches as needed, and deadhead wilted blooms if you don’t want the plant to self-seed.

Ravenala madagascariensis

traveller palms for sale

When grown in colder regions, the Travelers palm ( Ravenala madagascariensis ) can be grown in pots, provided you take appropriate care for cold protection. When the outdoor temperatures drop below 30°F, the pots should be moved inside or to sheltered and warmer areas such as a enclosed patio or cooler greenhouses. As they are a tropical species, they must be kept in a bright position, and the soil should remain moist. They should also be provided with regular feeding to keep them thriving. If kept in a pot, make sure to prune the leaves and the stems, to limit their growth and keep away pests. On the other hand, they can also be kept outdoors. If kept outdoors, make sure to water them regularly and add a slow-releasing fertilizer once a month. As they are also tolerant to salt spray, they can be planted near roads or seaside.

In conclusion, the Travelers palm is a beautiful palm-like tropical plant. It is a plant native to Madagascar and offers a unique and interesting look to gardens and yards. It will thrive in full sun or semi-shade, and requires regular watering, especially in warm periods. If grown in colder regions, this plant can be easily managed in pots, though extra care should be taken for cold protection. Moreover, it is tolerant to salt spray and can be planted near roads or seaside.

Traveler's Palm - Live Plant in a 3 Gallon Growers Pot - Ravenala Madagascariensis - Extremely Rare Ornamental Palms of Florida

About this item.

  • Ravenala madagascariensis, commonly called traveller's tree or traveller's palm, is a large tree-like plant which is native to moist forests in Madagascar where it will grow over time to 30-50' tall. It has now been planted in frost free areas around the world, including far southern Florida into the Keys, southern Texas, southern California and Hawaii.
  • This plant features an unbranched trunk (to 12" diameter) which is topped by a fan-shaped single plane of enormous, long-stalked, banana-like, deep green leaves (20-30 per trunk). Each leaf blade is 5-10' long by 2-3' wide and appears at the end of a thick, grooved leaf stalk (petiole) which is as long or longer than the leaf blade.
  • Leaf margins are sometimes split as is the case with some bananas. Up to one quart of rain water will accumulate in the expanded and cupped base of each leaf stalk, thus giving rise to the common names for this plant which suggests an emergency drinking water source for travellers in need.
  • Showy 3-petaled white flowers in cymes rise from boat-shaped spathes in a manner reminiscent of this plant's bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia) relative. Flowers bloom in summer plus sporadically throughout the rest of the year.
  • In early years, the trunk of this plant is subterranean (not visible), with the fan of leaves sitting on the ground. Eventually the trunk does appear and lengthen, with somewhat attractive leaf scar rings forming on the trunk surface as the lower leaves drop.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

Spring has sprung and the trails are calling. There are parks to explore, boots to break in , and summits to reach. Whether you’re new to hiking or, like me, due for (more than) a few gear upgrades , now’s the time to expand your kit as outfitters and retailers like REI, Amazon, and Backcountry are currently running sales on hiking gear galore. For a limited time, you can score brand-name trail essentials and outdoor gear on sale for up to 55 percent off.

After all, your gear can make or break your trip, so why not use this opportunity to save big on these pricey items before your next adventure? From my tried-and-true Osprey pack to Amazon’s best-selling women’s hiking boots and hydration bladders , here are the 10 best hiking gear deals that this longtime trekker , backpacker, and traveler is eyeing.

Osprey Archeon 45 Pack

Many seasoned hikers would agree that Osprey packs are the best on the market. They’re known for their quality, comfort, ergonomic fit, and for being truly ultra-light. Believe me, I lived out of a backpack for two years and every ounce that you don’t have to carry on your back matters. Right now, REI is offering 50 percent off this 45-liter Archeon style that’s ideally sized for multi-day hikes lasting from three days to up to a week. One reviewer called it the “best bag ever” and the most comfortable hiking pack they’ve ever worn — and after testing a range of other brands, I agree. As a bonus, it can sometimes pass as a carry-on on flights. Hurry, it's selling out fast!

Columbia Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Amped Hiking Boots

Amazon’s no. 1 best-selling women’s hiking boots are also almost half off right now. With their full-grain leather uppers and eye-catching red laces, Columbia’s Newton Ridge Boots harken back to the traditional mountaineering style (a.k.a. the style resurrected by the iconic book cover of Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild”). The shoes have amassed more than 18,000 five-star ratings, with countless reviewers praising their durability and unwavering waterproof capabilities. The cushiony midsoles, arch and ankle support, and grippy traction also get high marks.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter

LifeStraw is the OG portable water filter. You can stick the best-selling filter straw right into a stream and take a sip without having to worry about harmful bacteria, parasites, and microplastics. This tiny gadget, taking up less than 9 square inches in your pack, can be a lifesaver in emergency situations or just save your back from the stress of carrying excess water. Snag it for 22 percent off now; you won't regret adding it to your pack.

Athleta Trekkie North Joggers

These joggers are made with stretchy, moisture-wicking recycled nylon meant to resist tears when you inevitably get caught up in a branch on the trail. Although I haven’t tried them myself, I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from my hiking friends — and just one look at the glowing testimonies from REI shoppers will tell you that these are quality hiking pants . This highly rated Trekkie North style is starting at $49, and sizes are selling out quickly.

Zimfem Portable Camping Chair

For this summer’s overnight hikes or the times when you just want a comfy seat when you reach your destination , a portable camping chair comes in handy. At 4.7 pounds, this is perhaps not the best chair to cover long distances with — proper backpacking chairs weigh more like 2 pounds to mere ounces — but it’s a very affordable option for shorter treks when you have room in your bag for a luxury item. Despite being a new release, it's already generating a lot of buzz among Amazon shoppers (more than 1,000 units were sold in the last month, according to the retailer). For packing convenience, the fabric seat separates from the frame, which folds down to fit into a relatively compact 17-inch by 7-inch carrying sack.

Gonii Low-cut Hiking Socks 4-pack

Good hiking socks are the key to preventing blisters. You want a material that balances breathability with cushioning, and Amazon reviewers say that these cotton-blend athletic ankle socks by Gonii hit that sweet spot. In fact, a shopper was happy to report that they kept their feet cool on a scorching-hot 20-mile walk. They come in your standard white, black, and gray hues, as well as fun pastels and bright colors. For a pack of five pairs, $15 is a true bargain.

Stoic Venture UPF Sun Hoodie

Backcountry

On a recent hike under the relentless sun in Sedona, Arizona, I noticed that the most seasoned and prepared people on the trail sported hoodies — a counterintuitive move when the temperature is approaching triple digits, but one that your skin will thank you for. This Stoic sun hoodie, on sale for 55 percent off at Backcountry, has UPF 50+ protection built right into it, making it a wearable sun shade. It’s made with lightweight and moisture-wicking recycled polyester, so you don’t have to worry about overheating or lingering sweat patches.

Baen Sendi 2-liter Hydration Bladder 2-pack

Maybe you’re the type to never leave home without your emotional support water bottle, but on the trail, hands-free hydration is the way to go . At 20 percent off, this pack of two Baen Sendi bladders is less than the price of one single CamelBak replacement reservoir (and way less than the buzzy water bottles and tumblers on TikTok). Reviewers say that it works just as well as its pricier counterparts and fits perfectly inside their brand-name hydration packs.

Willit Hiking Shorts

Thousands of Amazon shoppers have given these Willit Hiking Shorts five-star ratings for their comfort, stretch, and durability. They’re super versatile and can be worn off the trail, too — the hallmark of the perfect travel shorts. You get your pick of almost 30 colors and patterns like trail-ready camo and sleek graphite gray. They’re normally priced at $34, but with Amazon’s 26-percent-off deal plus an extra 10-percent-off coupon, they’re only $23 (a steal).

SealLine 5-liter Dry Bag

Helpful on drizzly days, in unexpected showers, and when you’re keen to cool off in a stream on your hike, a dry bag separates the wet from the dry — and is a useful tool to safeguard your valuables. Throw your camera gear and other electronics in it to protect them from water damage, or save it to hold your soaked swimwear until you get back to the campsite clothesline. In addition to hikes, this 5-liter dry bag is good to have handy for kayaking and paddleboarding missions.

The Dirt: Palm Beach County's public golf courses are raking in the cash after Covid-19 boost

traveller palms for sale

Welcome to  The Dirt ! I’m real estate reporter  Kimberly Miller  with the latest developments in the sizzling market.

The Dirt has been saying for years that Covid-19 was the best thing that ever happened to golf, well since "Caddyshack" , of course, but now there is undeniable proof and Palm Beach Post county reporter Mike Diamond crunched all the numbers so you don't have to.

But, really, is it any wonder? (The following includes a stereotype, so sensitive folks ❄ should look away now.) Girls got yoga, boys got golf. And what's the best part of playing 18 holes? Day-drinking! Seriously, girls should get some cocktails with those chakras! Chaktails?

Also, someone paid $85 million for a vacant lot in Palm Beach, Vanderbilt University is hot for West Palm Beach, and the site of the former Carefree Theatre... welp, read about the lengthy and ongoing saga between a billionaire movie buff and a century-old historic district that's not too keen on his development plan.

And, Boynton Beach wants to add a slew of new communities to its tax roll, but it obviously hasn't heard of the most intimidating powerhouse force in the western communities. That's right, COBWRA is coming and it's rejecting the invite.

Palm Beach County golf courses rake in the cash

County golf courses are profitable enterprises , pulling in $5.7 million between 2019 and 2023 after operating expenses and improvements that were not taxpayer funded. Much of the spike in popularity is attributed to the pandemic when people were doing anything to get outside and the dog just couldn't go on 12 walks a day.

And I suppose I'm naive but does it really cost $90 for a single morning tee time!?! That's like 17 venti salted caramel mochas or 35 nacho cheese Doritos Locos tacos. It's also more expensive than getting a parking ticket in Palm Beach. And that, my friends, is why surfing is still cheaper and better than golfing . 🏄‍♀️

Yawn...another vacant lot, another $85 million sale

Realtors love to say that they're not making any more waterfront land. And they're not for the most part, except in Hawaii or where there is an active volcano and building on fresh lava rock probably isn't so smart. But in the Town of Palm Beach, the proof is in the sale prices.

A vacant lot with 225 feet of direct beachfront has sold for $85 million . The buyer is another Palm Beach mystery covered by Delaware's privacy laws on limited liability corporations. This is a rare find because it is actually on the beach, not across from the beach, and maybe that's why the price went from $12.7 million in 2005 to $85 million.

Developer of Carefree Theatre site asks for delay to planning board meeting

New York real estate developer and part-time Palm Beacher Charles Cohen was scheduled to go before a West Palm Beach planning board today (Tuesday, April 16) with his pitch for two new buildings on the old Carefree site. But he's asked for a postponement to possibly work with the El Cid community and come to a project size that is amenable to all involved.

It's been nearly a decade since Cohen bought the first parcels of land. He's tried twice before to get a development out of the ground and, turns out, the third time wasn't the charm.

Vanderbilt chancellor said potential campus in West Palm Beach is a 'marriage that has to work for us'

Senior business reporter Alexandra Clough got an exclusive interview with Vanderbilt University Chancellor Daniel Diermeier, who is interested in potentially opening a graduate school campus in downtown West Palm Beach.

Vanderbilt has a $10 billion endowment. Does it want the publicly-owned land for free? It's unclear, but Diermeier said it's a "marriage that has to work for us." If you remember, we're talking about the acreage that was initially going to be a University of Florida campus before all hell broke lose and it crashed and burned in a Towering Inferno-style fire stoked by ego and money.

Live lightly.

Want to own a piece of Disney's Fort Wilderness history? It can be yours ... for a price

traveller palms for sale

Now you can quite literally bring a piece of Disney home with you. Just make sure you have space for it.

Disney is making some changes to the Fort Wilderness area at Disney World in Orlando.

New "cabins" are part of the renovations and the old cabins are being sold by Dream Life Mobile Homes , which listed the cabins on its  website  and  Facebook Marketplace .

What could they be used for? They would make a "great investment property option for Airbnb, Vrbo, tiny home resort or rental," according to Orlando Resort Cabin's website.

Here's what you should know, whether you're interested in a cabin or just feeling nostalgic.

First thing first: How much do the old Fort Wilderness cabins cost?

Log in or sign up to view

The cabins are being sold for $49,900 , sight unseen.

"The price is firm and no volume discounts are available," according to Orlando Resort Cabin's website.

There currently are a limited number of units available for purchase.

"Cabins will be delivered to buyers as they are removed from the resort and may not be viewed nor inspected in advance."

The Orlando Resort Cabin project is a partnership between JCQ Services Inc. and Friedrich Watkins Co. in Orlando, which describes its mission as helping local resorts minimize waste during construction. The project helps to remove and relocate log cabins, with sales going through the brokerage firm Dream Life Mobile Homes.

Fort Wilderness cabins being sold. Here are the details

Just in case it's been a while, or maybe you had a few too many s'mores with Chip ‘n’ Dale at the Campfire Sing-Along, here are the details about the cabins you may have forgotten, according to Orlando Resort Cabins:

➤ Take a virtual tour of a cabin

  • Built between 1998-2001 and "have been renovated over the years in keeping with the resort’s quality standards."
  • Approximately 500 square feet; overall dimensions are 12 feet by 42 feet.
  • One bedroom, one bathroom.
  • Sleeps six.
  • Offered with all the original furniture. Also included are the appliances, water heater and an air conditioner unit.
  • The exterior deck, stairs and side skirting are not included.
  • The cabins are being sold "as is" and without any form of warranty.
  • Interested? Email [email protected] .
  • There are no financing options available.

Once sold, Fort Wilderness cabins will need to be relocated

A set amount of cabins will be available each month, which started in March.

The cabins are located in Orlando and will need to be moved to the buyers' property, according to Orlando Resort Cabins .

Local delivery is included with the sale within 25 miles of the cabin’s original location in Orlando.

Outside of 25 miles, delivery fees will apply. These cabins are considered oversized loads and will require rigs and permits for delivery. Buyers are responsible for researching zoning and permits before purchase, Orlando Resort Cabins said.

Changes coming to Fort Wilderness in 2024

Walt Disney World announced in 2023 that it planned to refresh the cabin hideaways at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. The company said it would replace the existing cabins at the resort with 350 new cabins.

The new cabins are part of several projects at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, including improvements at the pool and walking trail. The resort campground first opened in 1971.

The new Fort Wilderness cabins were designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney World’s Facility Asset Management team.

When will the new cabins be available at Fort Wilderness?

The first loop of cabins will open July 1, with more loops opening in phases throughout the year, according to Disney Parks.

Reservations for the cabins opened on March 19 for Disney Vacation Club members, to Walt Disney World Annual Passholders on March 20, and to all guests on March 21.

Make reservations either online  or by calling 407-934-7639.

Features of new cabins coming to Fort Wilderness

The new cabins — which feature floor-to-ceiling windows — will sleep up to six people and some can accommodate dogs, according to Disney Vacation Club's website.

➤ Take a virtual tour of the new cabins

There are two types of cabins , according to Disney's website. We checked online and found costs ranged from $504 to $655 for two adults, depending on dates:
