MSC Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2023)

MSC Grandiosa

MSC Cruises has an active fleet of 22 ships currently. They are currently one of the largest cruise line fleets in the world.

Their next ship, MSC World America will launch in 2025 – taking them to 23 ships.

Introduction to MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is a Swiss-Italian cruise line, founded back in 1989 in Naples, Italy.

A sibling company of the giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), MSC has strong roots connecting it with the sea dating back to 1675.

Since 1989, MSC Cruises has built a formidable fleet of cruise ships, with the last few years adding several brand new ships per year on average and an order book with many more lined up.

Whilst the cruise shutdown of 2020 stopped MSC from sailing briefly, they were quick to continue the building of their new ships and did not sell off any of their current vessels.

This guide will help you work out which MSC Cruises’ ship is which!

MSC Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

MSC Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all msc ships new builds.

Only two of MSC Cruises’ ships ( MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia ) are not new-builds for MSC Cruises. These two ships are ex-Festival Cruises ships (previously named European Vision and European Stars ).

They were acquired when Festival Cruises went bankrupt and MSC Cruises purchased them for their operations.

MSC Cruises chose to use a modified version of the European-class ships and built MSC Lirica and her twin sister, MSC Opera .

MSC Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

What is the meraviglia plus class.

The Meraviglia Plus class was built after the success of MSC Meraviglia . The Plus class is an extended version of the ship (approx 15m longer) and has slightly larger facilities, including more cabins – giving an extra passenger capacity of 679 ( MSC Grandiosa – 6,334 compared to MSC Meraviglia 5,642).

What is the Seaside EVO class?

The Seaside EVO class was built after the success of MSC Seaside . This class is 16m longer, offering bigger facilities throughout the ship and more cabins. This enables a higher passenger capacity over the existing Seaside class of 548 passengers ( MSC Seashore 5,632 compared to MSC Seaside 5,084)

Additionally, newer classes of MSC ships are more environmentally advanced, offering enhanced wastewater treatment facilities and enhanced selective catalytic reductions (i.e reduced emissions).

The best ships of MSC Cruises – which one suits you?

Guide to MSC Cruises best cruise ships

MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, and the brand new MSC Euribia are among the best ships of MSC Cruises and amongst some of the largest cruise ships at sea. They all belong to the Meraviglia Plus class ships.

Italian-born and built MSC Cruises launched these ships in 2019, 2021, and 2023 respectively. MSC Euribia is hailed as one of the most environmentally friendly cruise ships at sea. It boasts advanced admissions technology and modern wastewater treatments.

If you are looking for a value-for-money cruise vacation, we recommend that you take a close look at the best ships of MSC Cruises.

Quick navigation

Traditionally elegant cruise ships for all ages

MSC Cruises is a big seller in the travel industry. From loyal MSC customers who choose them time and again for a cruise vacation to families completely new to the cruise experience, MSC delivers. And very often for well under the price that other cruise lines charge. Especially attractive if you are cruising on a budget.

Many MSC guests we have spoken to have commented about the classy feel of the MSC Ships. And we tend to agree.

From layout to design and decor, the cruise ships are elegant with a touch of glamour. This is especially true for the newest ships with fantastic architectural details.

The larger the ship, the younger the crowd

This is a trend for most cruise lines. The reason is that larger cruise ships have more activities and entertainment venues. And this attracts a younger crowd looking for an action-packed experience on board.

So, in addition to guests in the 60+ age group, traditionally the largest segment of cruise customers, you will find couples, families, and honeymooners on board, especially on the largest ships sailing the oceans.

How do MSC Cruises compare with Royal Caribbean Group?

The two cruise lines, MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group offer worldwide cruises on some of the most giant cruise ships at sea. But in many ways, they offer very different experiences.

MSC entertainment – hit or miss?

Royal Caribbean has a reputation for having great entertainment on board in the form of Broadway-style shows. And to put it plainly, MSC does not.

It does have its acclaimed Cirque du Soleil show on MSC Grandiosa, Bellissima, and Meraviglia. If you enjoy comedians, magicians, and sing-and-dance routines, then MSC will suit you as long as you are content with the same type of show each night.

On the whole, the theater experience on board Royal Caribbean is, hands down, of a better variety.

But all this may change as the MSC ships become bigger, newer, and more advanced. They need to get the shows up to the same Broadway-style quality that Royal Caribbean does so brilliantly.

The cruise cuisine

Cuisine onboard Royal Caribbean is often of slightly higher quality and variety than MSC Cruises. It’s not that we don’t love Italian style food, there is always a very good range of dishes and cuisine available. And some of our meals were outstanding when we tested three different MSC cruise ships.

But overall, there is a difference, and Royal Caribbean has a better reputation for its cuisine. If you are a first-time cruise guest choosing MSC Cruises, you will find the food range and variety more than plenty. And we recommend you try out the specialty restaurants on board, which are very good.

An international guest list

Royal Caribbean attracts more American and Canadian customers compared to MSC Cruises, which has a more significant number of international guests. And this makes sense being a European cruise company.

And with this, all announcements are repeated in many languages, whereas Royal Caribbean tends to stick to English. Regardless of where you come from, you can be sure to meet new friends from all corners of the world.

How to choose the best cruise ship for you

When choosing your MSC cruise ship, look closely at the onboard facilities.

The older and smaller the cruise ship, the less variety of facilities on board. The newer and bigger the cruise ship, the more bells and whistles you will find.

Cruise to get you where you want to go

Both MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean Group have fantastic itineraries. Both offer the “core” stops that most other cruise lines include. For example, in the Caribbean, there are the Bahamas, Cozumel, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman Islands.

In Europe, there is Barcelona, Rome, Venice, and Athens . And then many other stops can be unique to that particular cruise line.

MSC Cruises also offers its unique island experience in the Bahamas (as Royal Caribbean does at CocoCay). MSC has Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, where you’ll find beaches, cafes, bars, and shopping.

MSC Ocean Cay Marine Reserve is part of the Bimini chain of islands in the Bahamas, just 100km east of Miami.

So check the itineraries, research the ports of call, and draw up your bucket list of dream destinations you want to visit.

Then start looking at itineraries that tick most places. Is there a great ship that can get you there? Look at the ship and facilities on board. Narrow your list until you find the right one for you and your family.

What is MSC Yacht Club, and is it worth the extra price tag?

MSC Cruises offers different types of cruising “experiences” in the price categories of inside, window, balcony, and suite cabins.

The three main categories are Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea . You can find detailed information about what’s included in each “experience” here .

And then there is the most expensive price category, MSC Yacht Club .

MSC Yacht Club is an all-suite price category with 24-hour butler service, a dedicated concierge, and access to a private lounge, restaurant, and pool deck exclusively for Yacht Club guests.

A complimentary mini-bar and a wide-screen TV in your cabin are also included. You have free access to the thermal suite in the Spa area, but actual treatments are charged extra.

If you choose this category and book a suite, be sure to know if you are booking a balcony or if your suite has panoramic windows. MSC Cruises boast their Yacht Club category as a “ship within a ship” concept. And it is excellent. Certainly comparable to the Royal Caribbeans Aqua class, and many guests say they get more value with Yacht Club than the Aqua class.

The latest MSC concept – Explore Journeys

Earlier in 2021, MSC Cruises announced that they are taking this concept of Yacht Club one step further and building a luxury brand.

This whole new class of suite-only ships will be named Explore Journeys . Look out for more information on these new ships.

MSC Cruises’ fleet of ships

Seaside and seaside evo class ships of msc cruises.

MSC’s “Seaside” class first started sailing in 2017. There are currently three ships sailing and one planned for launch in 2022:

  • MSC Seaside
  • MSC Seaview
  • MSC Seashore
  • MSC Seascape

They are visually stunning ships with a guest capacity of over 5000. As sister ships, MSC Seaview and MSC Seaside sail the Mediterranean in the summer before heading to the Caribbean and the private island paradise of MSC Ocean Cay for winter.

MSC Seashore and its sister ship, Seascape, are slightly more extensive than the Seaside class ships above. And therefore, these ships have been classed as MSC Seaside EVO (meaning “evolution”).

They are more environmentally friendly and have a slightly larger capacity (around 5400 guests) than MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview.

However, they are smaller than the 6300 guest capacity ships in the Meraviglia Plus class .

What we love about MSC Seashore class ships is their waterfront concept with huge outdoor promenades, bringing you closer to the ocean.

There are some fantastic architectural moments on board, for example, the glass-floored bridge – The Bridge of Sighs, and the Swarovski Staircase. So you will undoubtedly feel you are floating in a luxurious hotel when on board.

MSC Seashore will sail in the Caribbean, including MSC’s private island Ocean Cay and The Antilles, in summer and winter.

Meraviglia class ships of MSC Cruises

  • MSC Meraviglia
  • MSC Bellissima

In 2017 when MSC Cruises launched its latest advanced ship onto the cruise market, Meraviglia, it became one of the largest ships at sea. Also on board are MSC’s first solo cabins for guests traveling alone. In total, these ships can accommodate 4500 guests on board.

Quickly followed two years later by its beautiful sister ship, MSC Bellissima, both are glamorous and packed full of fun activities that work perfectly for families.

Meraviglia Plus class ships of MSC Cruises

  • MSC Grandiosa
  • MSC Virtuosa
  • MSC World Europa
  • MSC Euribia
  • MSC World America

MSC Grandiosa was the first of this Plus class, launched in 2019, and is sailing in the Mediterranean in the summer.

MSC Virtuosa is their newest ship at sea. She will sail in the United Arab Emirates and the Mediterranean.

MSC World Europa has three more planned sisters in the same “World” class in 2024, 2025, and 2027 and will be among the largest cruise ships at sea, accommodating 6,850 guests.

The first is MSC World America, which will cruise from Miami to the Caribbean in Spring 2025.

MSC World Europa will be MSCs first LNG ( liquefied natural gas ) powered ship .

Brand new to and rounding off the Meriviglia Plus class ships is the beautiful MSC Euribia , launched from the port in Copenhagen in June 2023 and sailing in Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords for its first season at sea.

MSC Fantasia class ships of MSC Cruises

  • MSC Fantasia
  • MSC Splendida
  • MSC Preziosa

Built in 2008 and 2009, respectively, MSC Fantasia and MSC Splendida are elegant ships with onboard facilities such as a theater, pools and spa, mini golf, and basketball courts. They attract slighter older guests, there are fewer families with small children, and therefore offer a more relaxed type of cruise.

We have cruised Fantasia around the Mediterranean and Splendida to the Norwegian Fjords, both excellent itineraries. There are, however, limited activities on board for families. MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia are in the Mediterranean for the summer of 2022.

MSC Divina and MSC Preziosa are similar ships but are larger, accommodating more guests with more activities on board. MSC Divina cruises in the Caribbean, including the private island of MSC Ocean Cay , and MSC Preziosa offers cruises in Northern Europe, the Baltics, and the spectacular Norwegian Fjords.

MSC Musica class ship of MSC Cruises

  • MSC Orchestra
  • MSC Magnifica

MSC Musica, the first ship built in this class in 2006, accommodates around 2500 guests. MSC Orchestra is a little larger, with 3200 guests.

The smaller size ships with fewer passengers mean calmer sailing. Choose these ships if you love the itinerary and not if you are looking for a wide range of action-packed activities.

MSC Musica has cruises in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles in the summer. MSC Orchestra, Poesia, and Magnifica sail in Northern Europe and the Norwegian Fjords .

MSC Lirica class ship of MSC Cruises

  • MSC Armonia
  • MSC Sinfonia

The Lirica class of MSC Cruises’ fleet of ships are the oldest and smallest cruise ships of MSC Cruises. The lead ship in this class, MSC Lirica, was built in 2002.

All the ships have been refurbished since then and have a capacity of around 1560.

This smaller capacity means a more intimate sailing experience and the possibility of reaching smaller ports. Facilities include pools, spas, a casino, shopping, and a theater. So a quieter cruise with fewer activities. It’s very much an adult cruising experience.

In 2022, MSC Lirica is sailing from Athens to Jeruselum via Greece. MSC Sinfonia is sailing the Greek Isles from Venice. MSC Opera is sailing the Mediterranean and includes Tunisia as one of the stops. And MSC Armonia is sailing the Mediterranean.

MSC Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the MSC Cruises ships with the most things to do on board? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest MSC Cruises ships.

The biggest MSC Cruises ships have the most pools, hot tubs, waterslides and other deck-top allures, as well as the most restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. They have the biggest spas and casinos among ships in the MSC Cruises fleet, and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 6,000 passengers or more, the biggest MSC Cruises ships are truly massive resorts of the sort you find at such landlocked destinations as Las Vegas and Orlando. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the MSC Cruises ships for you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, MSC Cruises doesn't just operate giant vessels. The Switzerland-based cruise giant also operates quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a much more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just a third the size of the biggest MSC Cruises ships. These smaller vessels, notably, have far fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest MSC Cruises ships.

Vacationers who like their resort experiences on the more intimate side will want to gravitate to the smaller MSC Cruises ships.

What is the biggest MSC Cruises ship?

The biggest MSC Cruises ship is MSC World Europa. At 215,863 gross tons, it's the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever built and the sixth biggest cruise ship in the world from any line.

Unveiled in the final days of 2022 (so close to year's end that we considered it a new vessel for 2023 when we listed the year's most exciting new ships ), MSC World Europa can hold up to 6,762 passengers — almost as many as can fit on Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class vessels, the world's largest cruise ships.

What is the smallest MSC Cruises ship?

The smallest MSC Cruises ships are MSC Armonia and its sister vessel MSC Sinfonia. Built with the same specifications, the two ships measure just 65,542 tons a piece — just a third the size of the biggest MSC Cruises ship (MSC World Europa).

Unveiled in 2001 and 2002, respectively, MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia are not only the smallest MSC Cruises ships but also the oldest MSC Cruises ships.

Because of their small size, MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia have fewer restaurants, bars and entertainment areas than the biggest MSC Cruises ships. They also don't have the big water parks that are common on newer MSC Cruises ships. For the most part, their top decks are lined only with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the early 2000s.

Are bigger MSC Cruises ships coming?

Probably. MSC Cruises currently has three new cruise ships on order that are all sister vessels to the line's new MSC World Europa, the first ship in the line's new World class of ships. The line hasn't said for sure how big the vessels will be, but the second, third and fourth vessels in a series are typically at least as big or bigger than the first vessel in a series.

The first of the new ships to arrive will be MSC World America in 2025, which is scheduled to be deployed in Florida . Two more of the World-class vessels are scheduled for completion in 2026 and 2027.

The World-class vessels are being built at the giant Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France.

Related: The best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises ship

In addition to the above, MSC Group — the line's parent company — has announced plans for yet another class of big MSC Cruises ships to start arriving later this decade, though there have been few details released.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller MSC Cruises ships?

The biggest MSC Cruises ships have room for a lot more onboard venues and attractions than older MSC Cruises ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience as opposed to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest MSC Cruises ship, MSC World Europa, you'll find an almost unbelievable number of pools and hot tubs (six and 14, respectively). The watery offerings include an aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. There is also a family sun deck.

In addition, MSC World Europa has 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. In a twist, the ship has three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambiance.

Related: The ultimate guide to MSC Cruises

The smallest MSC Cruises ships are just a third the size of MSC World Europa and thus lack room for many of the larger ships' features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people.

While the new MSC World Europa can hold nearly 7,000 people with every berth filled, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Lirica class) are only designed to carry about 2,700 passengers with every berth filled.

MSC Cruises' smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try MSC Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the MSC Cruises fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don't miss out on these MSC Cruises loyalty perks

In addition, because of their size, the smallest MSC Cruises ships are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of MSC World Europa.

MSC Cruises' Latest Sale Has Voyages Starting at $179 — When to Book

The sale is running until April 18.

MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person.

The sale, which was extended and must be booked by April 18, offers cruises starting at just $179 per person, according to MSC. The sale rate is based on double occupancy and does not include the taxes, fees, or port expenses.

Travelers who take advantage of this deeply-discounted rate can sail on three and four night journeys from Miami for just $179, or from Orlando starting at just $189, MSC shared with Travel + Leisure .

“It’s a great opportunity, whether you’re curious about cruising for the first time or you’re an avid cruiser looking to book your next sailing,” Koreen McNutt, the senior vice president and commercial sales officer for MSC Cruises USA, told T+L. “These quick getaways let guests discover everything we have to offer from world-class onboard entertainment and outstanding family programming to a variety of delicious dining venues and wonderful amenities. Plus, these short cruises all visit our private island in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, with beautiful white-sand beaches and pristine water brimming with vibrant marine life.”

The sale also includes MSC’s cruises from Galveston , which the company plans to introduce as its newest homeport in the United States in 2025. The cruise line expects to sail 7-night trips to Mexico and Central America on the MSC Seascape out of Galveston, which start at just $459 per person during the sale.

In addition, MSC is offering savings on its newest ship, the MSC World America , which the company plans to launch next year complete with a thrilling over-water swing ride, 13 different restaurants, an 11-deck-high dry slide, and more. Cruises on this ship start at just $649 per person as part of the sale.

“Cruising offers an unbeatable value proposition for vacations and we’re offering more itinerary options from a larger selection of embarkation ports than ever before, which makes it even easier for more people to discover what MSC Cruises is all about,” McNutt added.

Beyond the cruise fare, MSC is offering the option for travelers to add a drink package and Wi-FI to their booking starting at just $329.

Swing ride 160 feet above the water coming to MSC Cruises' new ship in 2025

MSC Cruises’ new ship will have a swing set on board – but not the kind you’d find on a playground.

Cliffhanger, a new ride launching on forthcoming U.S. flagship MSC World America next year, will allow guests to swing out over the ocean 160 feet above the water, the cruise line revealed Tuesday. The four-seat ride uses mechanical arms to lift guests beyond the 22-deck ship’s edge, where they are propelled back and forth.

The line is billing the attraction as the only over-water swing ride at sea. MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez said Cliffhanger is a “natural next step,” following attractions on its other ships like Seascape’s Robotron .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

“It’s the first time we’re taking thrill-seekers out past the deck and over the water, and we know they’ll love it,” he told USA TODAY in an email. There will be an added charge for the ride, but pricing details were not yet available.

Cliffhanger will be part of Family Aventura, one of seven districts on the 2,614-stateroom ship. The area also features The Harbor, an outdoor park area with a high ropes course, a playground inspired by the lighthouse at the line’s private Bahamas destination Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and more.

Other districts on the ship include Galleria, home to dining venues, shopping and games “at the heart of the ship,” and Zen Area, an adults-only zone at the vessel’s stern where guests can enjoy music, catch some sun and take a dip in twin pools, according to an earlier news release .

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

World America will debut in April 2025 and spend its inaugural season sailing Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami.
