With its focus on new equipment and ability to snap back from COVID-19 rather quickly, Cline Tours was among the first in the nation to place a new 10-coach order with MCI in 2021.

In 1996, John McCommon, president of Ridgeland, Mississippi’s Cline Tours Inc ., purchased the operation, which at the time was about 13 years old but only consisted of one bus.

“It was a well-known business at the time with a great name in the region, which is why I chose to keep the Cline Tours brand,” explains McCommon. “But obviously, you can’t make a living with one bus, so I looked to grow the business and was able to do so fairly quickly.”

Flash forward to today, McCommon has grown Cline Tours to eight locations across Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, which transports more than 10,000 passengers at any given time.

Growing its stature in the industry, Cline Tours prides itself on providing excellent customer service, remaining vigilant with its safety practices, and using cutting-edge technology throughout the organization.

From McCommon’s start, he not only rebuilt and expanded the company’s fleet but did so with only new coaches engineered with the latest features — a strategic tactic that distinguishes Cline from its competitors and bolsters its bottom line.

For these reasons and more, McCommon and Cline Tours was named METRO Magazine ’s Motorcoach Operator of the Year at this year’s United Motorcoach Association’s EXPO , which was held in Charlotte, N.C., in February.

“Receiving this award certainly means a lot, especially coming from METRO Magazine , which is very well respected in the industry,” says McCommon. “Also, to be recognized as a real contributor to our industry means a lot to us and we are very proud of it.”

Cline’s Growth and Strategy

Since purchasing Cline, McCommon has brought a progressive and ambitious touch to create one of the nation’s most innovative tour, charter, and corporate shuttle operations.

Upon purchasing the operation, McCommon secured work at the then burgeoning casinos in Mississippi, growing the fleet to about 13 coaches by 2001 in the process.

Following 9/11 , McCommon bought out his business partner and saw the growth of his company eventually begin to grow by the mid-2000s.

“Once the shock of 9/11 and the change of ownership wore off, we started to really grow organically,” he explains. “Over the years, we’ve also had numerous opportunities to grow our company through acquisitions and have done so through the purchase of 19 companies, not only in Mississippi but also in Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee.”

While recognizing casino business was helping to pay the bills at the time, McCommon used his company’s success to take advantage of other opportunities to diversify as they arose, including a military contract at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Miss.

“That contract produced great revenue and allowed us to start buying new buses,” says McCommon. “Once we started adding those buses, the business seemed to follow.”

Another successful avenue for Cline Tours came in the way of the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) colleges and universities, including the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State, and the University of Alabama.

“We probably do more SEC football business than any other bus company,” says McCommon, who adds that Cline’s clientele also includes smaller, lesser-known colleges and universities, as well as a junior colleges and private schools.

He says a heavy saturation in this market was key to the operation getting back on its feet after COVID-19 took away so much of the company’s business.

“Many of those schools were less affected by COVID, and after about four months or so, that business started to come back, especially at some of the high schools, and then eventually those Division 1 college programs, who were the first to start competitive sports again,” says McCommon. “Once that business started to come back, it came back strong.”

Today, the majority of Cline’s business is charter.

New coaches, safety, and more.

From McCommon’s start, he not only rebuilt and expanded the company’s fleet but did so with only new coaches engineered with the latest features — a strategic tactic that distinguishes Cline from any competitor and bolsters its bottom line. In his words, “That’s because everybody wants to ride on the new motorcoaches.”

Cline tailors its coaches’ specifications adding important safety options such as 360-degree cameras for a bird’s eye view around the coach and the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that provides collision mitigation, lane departure, and traffic sign recognition.

“We’re very concerned with the safety of not only our passengers, but also our staff,” says McCommon. “One of the reasons we began to move toward using only newer coaches was because newer buses are generally safer buses because the technology is more up to date. They also typically get about 10 to 15 percent better fuel mileage, which helps us control fuel costs.”

In addition to being named METRO ’s Motorcoach Operator of the Year, Cline Tours was also the winner of 2024’s International Motorcoach Group ’s Safety Award.

“We are really proud of winning that award as well, because safety is really how we sell ourselves to our customers,” says McCommon.

The move was a step back toward Cline’s policy of swapping out its old coaches for new ones.

“Before the pandemic, we were buying 20 to 25 coaches a year, at our peak, from MCI ,” says McCommon. “And that practiced continued for about 10 years, where we’d sell 20 coaches and buy 20 coaches, but COVID killed that. We plan to get back on that cycle, but it’s going to take several years for us to do so.”

McCommon says there have been several reasons for his operation straying from its traditional practice, including the value of previously-owned coaches cratering and soaring interest rates.

Another reason, he adds, is the supply chain issues experienced by motorcoach suppliers.

“Our suppliers have been devastated, particularly the manufacturers and parts suppliers. It is crazy what we had to go through during COVID, but it’s been especially crazy for them and we can’t operate without our suppliers,” McCommon says, adding that he plans on remaining patient and continuing to work as a partner with his suppliers.

“We know they’ve been through a lot and we’re sure there’s going to be some good to come out of it, but until then we are going to continue to work with MCI and all our suppliers to find solutions and keep moving forward,” he says.

Innovative technologies, maintaining customers.

Cline Tours keeps miles ahead of others by applying innovative technologies. From its front office, to dispatch, to operational data on its coaches, Cline is often the first to embrace new software and systems to improve customer service and operational profitability.

“One of the first steps in the technology chain for us that was truly meaningful were electronic logs,” says McCommon. “We got on board with that technology about a year and a half before the mandate because we didn't want to wait until the last minute to find out there were issues. Fortunately, the first supplier we partnered with worked out for us and they are still our partner today.”

At Cline, every customer relationship starts with communicatio n. Staff stay connected digitally with customers and drivers in advance, during, and after each trip.

To successfully enable this next level of service, Cline uses C Spire, a Ridgeland, Miss.-based telecommunications supplier, for its VoIP phone systems, email, and software platforms, which link its locations and powers its online booking.

More clients are navigating away from booking by telephone, McCommon said in a YouTube video promoting its partnership with C Spire.

“Forty percent of our bookings are now online. It’s where everyone is going, and our mission is to get there first,” he says.

While adding that 90% of Cline ’s work is from repeat customers, McCommon says much of his operation’s work is driven through its website, which was revamped several years ago and is responsive for optimal viewing from a phone, tablet, or computer.

With business strong and getting stronger, McCommon says his operation’s biggest issue is the same as most, which is having enough drivers on board to handle potential growth.

“We had a lot of drivers who moved on to other opportunities or just didn’t come back after COVID because they were retired already and didn’t necessarily need the income,” he says.

To combat the issue, Cline has raised wages, offered sign-on bonuses, and created competitive benefits packages, including insurance and 401K programs.

“The buses aren’t going to drive themselves,” says McCommon. “We need drivers, and to get them in the door, we’ve got to make working here as attractive as possible.”

While the trucking industry does supply some competition for drivers in the areas Cline serves, McCommon says with that industry down they have been able to address another talent issue the operation has been experiencing.

“We have been able to hire some mechanics from the trucking business, or from shops that serve the trucking industry, because business their business has been falling off, but ours is not,” says McCommon. “While that remains to be the case, we want to continue to take advantage of while we still can.”

Patsy Cline Historic House

how much does cline tours cost

Located in a working-class neighborhood in the City of Winchester, Virginia, this modest house was the residence of country music legend Patsy Cline (1932-63), who lived here from the ages of 16 to 21, when she married Gerald Cline. Patsy resided here from 1948-53, longer than at any other house associated with her in the Winchester and Nashville areas, and she returned to it intermittently until her singing career began in 1957.

More than 40 years after Cline’s tragic death in 1963, her country music legacy endures. Cline was the first solo female singer to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1960, and the first woman to be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973. Cline’s albums and CDs continue to sell “platinum” every year and she has been on Billboard Magazine’s Top Country Album List for the last ten years. “Crazy,” one of Patsy’s best-known songs written by Willie Nelson, continues to be the number one jukebox hit of all time.

The Patsy Cline Historic House is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Although planning an independent trip is feasible in the USA, the details of the logistics and the potential complexities of transportation usually make booking a tour here an appealing alternative. With these factors in mind, most travelers discover that the expense of a tour in the USA is a wise investment. Delegating the details of transportation, accommodations, activities, and dining to professionals guarantees a hassle-free experience, freeing you up to fully immerse yourself in the trip so you can relax.

You can find many situations where tours in the USA are more cost-effective compared to an independently planned trip. The affordability of a tour depends on factors such as the destinations covered, level of luxury, and duration. Each tour and independent trip is unique, but tour providers often offer competitive prices that match the luxury level of an independent trip with the same amenities. On average, a tour in the USA costs $394 per day, with many tours priced below this average, although some are higher. Prices for tours in the USA range from $155 to $9,189. When comparing costs with independent travel, it's important to consider that guided tours typically include accommodations, transportation, guides, meals, tickets, and even more. To accurately compare prices, it is essential to understand the inclusions of a tour package and thoroughly research the costs of independent travel in the USA.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in the USA

For many travelers, it is a hard decision whether to travel with an organized tour package or to plan a trip independently. Organized tour packages are a great way to travel in the USA in 2024 or 2025 because a variety of great deals and sales are now available. Also, because guided tours tend to be all-inclusive, they will provide great values on accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, food, and other travel necessities. You'll also have the benefits of knowledgable guides as well as the peace of mind that you don't have to plan out the entire trip. On the other hand, traveling independently provides more flexibility and control over your travel plans instead of the fixed schedule of a tour package. You can shift your schedule and budget around as needed. Also, it's easier to get closer to local cultures and visit those harder to reach destinations that tours usually don't visit.

What are the benefits of a package tour to the USA?

Traveling with a tour provides a multitude of advantages. One of the most significant benefits is the convenience of having all the details sorted out for you. From arranging transportation to securing accommodations and planning activities, everything is taken care of, allowing you to have a worry-free experience. This means you won't have to stress about finding suitable places to stay, figuring out logistics, or potentially missing out on any important sights. Additionally, most tours offer all-inclusive pricing, giving you a clear understanding of the total cost of your trip before you depart. The beneifits of a tour are

  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • not having to plan
  • reliable service and schedule
  • fixed budget
  • meeting other like-minded travelers
  • eliminating risks

What are the benefits of independent travel in the USA?

The advantages of independent travel include freedom, control, and flexibility. When you travel independently, you have the freedom to decide where to stay, which attractions to visit, when and where to eat, and how to navigate the destination. Taking charge of these choices also gives you greater control over your budget, schedule, itinerary, and the level of luxury you desire during your trip. Other benefits include:

  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations
  • flexible schedules
  • flexible budget

To ensure your spot on the tour to the USA, it is recommended to plan and book well in advance, preferably a few months or more prior to the departure date. While it is not uncommon for many people to reserve their tours up to a year ahead, our experience indicates that booking around 6 to 9 months in advance is typically adequate. It is essential to consider that numerous tours get fully booked ahead of time, so early booking guarantees your place on the trip. Moreover, booking early can result in significant cost savings, as tour companies often offer early booking sales and discounted prices. However, it is important to be aware that some tour companies may occasionally offer last-minute discounts for tours that are not fully booked. Nevertheless, waiting for last-minute discounts entails the risk of missing out on a spot if the tour reaches full capacity.

When it comes to tours in the USA, group sizes can range from as small as 4 to as large as 999 people, with an average group size of 30. Nevertheless, it's worth mentioning that the size of the tour does not necessarily correlate with its cost or overall experience.

Most organized tour packages to the USA typically last around 8 days, although the duration can vary. Tours can range from 2 to 25 days, or even longer. It is important to note that longer tours may be more expensive initially, but their cost per day tends to decrease. Additionally, longer tours offer the opportunity to visit multiple destinations at a comfortable pace, making them a worthwhile investment.

Where do group tours go in the USA?

The USA offers an abundance of tours that venture into different parts of the country, allowing you to explore a multitude of locations. Some of the top attractions you can expect to visit on these tours include Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Yellowstone National Park, and Jackson, ensuring a captivating and diverse experience.

What tour and travel companies offer packages to the USA?

Plenty of companies are offering package tours to and around the USA, but not all of them are the same. Some of the companies are large international operators that have solid reputations. Other companies are smaller and offer more unique and locally-based insights into the country. With larger companies, tours are rarely cancelled and customer service is generally high. With smaller companies, you're more likely to have a trip that gives you more local and personable experiences.

The companies offering the most tours in the USA are Wildland Trekking , Intrepid Travel , Globus , Travelling Time , and Trafalgar . All of them tend to offer quality trips with high guest ratings.

What is the best tour company offering trips to the USA?

When it comes to tours in the USA, Globus takes the top spot with their highly-rated tour packages. Their dedication to quality service and captivating journeys has won them plenty of accolades from previous guests.

Master’s Transportation’s large inventory allows us to offer extremely competitive pricing on all new and used motor coaches and travel vans. Our prices are some of the lowest in the industry because we receive volume discounts from our long-standing partners in manufacturing.

With that being said, several factors will impact the cost of your bus or van. These factors include the model, age, mileage, equipment package, and financing method you select.

Can I finance a new or used travel bus?

Yes, Master’s Transportation offers several financing and leasing options , including:

  • Operational leases
  • Short-term lease
  • Financed leases
  • Trac leases
  • Purchase financing

Our tour buses can be leased for seasonal or yearly time frames, depending on your needs.

Leasing is an excellent choice due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, which has limited the in-stock inventory of our tour buses for sale.

If you are looking for a way to unlock additional savings, take advantage of the Section 179 IRS deduction to reduce your tax obligations.

Do you offer repair services or parts for tour vehicles?

Of course we do! Beyond sales and rentals, we also serve as a reliable partner for tour bus repair and maintenance services, in addition to having access to thousands of parts for commercial vehicles spanning a wide range of makes and models.

How many passengers can a tour bus hold?

The seating capacity of your vehicle will vary greatly depending on which model you choose. For instance, our tour vans typically carry between 10-15 passengers whereas our large motor coaches can accommodate as many as 75 tourists. We also offer intermediate-sized tour buses that can accommodate 15-30 guests.

Do tour bus drivers need a CDL?

Tour bus drivers must possess a CDL if they are operating a vehicle that can accommodate more than 15 passengers. Tour vans or buses that carry 15 passengers or less do not require a CDL to drive.

Can I buy a tour bus that is located in another city or state?

Of course! Master’s Transportation offers nationwide delivery. If you have found the perfect tour bus, but it is located outside of your state of residence, give us a call. We can arrange for the vehicle to be delivered straight to you.

Can I rent one of your tour buses or vans?

Yes! Master’s Transportation is the nation’s largest commercial bus rental company. Whether you need a short-term or long-term rental, we will be glad to assist.

ATEEZ world tour 2024

Fans Want To Know How Much ATEEZ Tickets Will Set Us Back This Summer

Image of Beverly Jenkins

Get excited, ATEEZ fans ! The hottest new K-pop Hip-Hop group is coming to a city near you . ATEEZ announced that they’re setting off on a 10-city tour of the United States this summer, followed by European dates in the fall and spring of 2025. Their shows often sell out quickly, so we’re wondering when and where we can get tickets … and most importantly, how much will they cost?

The tour is officially called the 2024 ATEEZ WORLD TOUR, TOWARDS THE LIGHT: WILL TO POWER, and it is expected to fill stadiums in July and August. ATEEZ is fresh off a successful and historic performance at Coachella , where they became the first male K-pop act to ever perform at the music festival. This means their already-popular tickets are sure to sell fast, and they might be a bit more expensive than the last time the group toured in 2023.

The first show is at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington on July 14. For reference, the Tacoma Dome is the largest venue in the state and holds up to 21,000 people, so this is bound to be a huge show in every way. Last year, ATEEZ sold out smaller venues in cities like Seoul, Los Angeles, London, and Sydney, where tickets generally started at around $45 for general admission and $135 for premium seats. You could also purchase VIP packages including special merchandise and even meet-and-greets with the band, but those will cost a pretty penny—up to $5,000 each!

We expect ticket prices to be similar in the upcoming tour, but who are we kidding? This is 2024, so the prices will definitely be higher than last year.

Tour dates for the 2024 ATEEZ WORLD TOUR, TOWARDS THE LIGHT: WILL TO POWER

Here’s a list of all the U.S. cities ATEEZ will visit this summer:

  • July 14: Tacoma Dome, Tacoma, Washington State
  • July 17: Oakland Arena, Oakland, California
  • July 20: BMO Stadium, Los Angeles, California
  • July 25: Footprint Center, Phoenix, Arizona
  • July 28: Globe Life Field, Arlington, Texas
  • July 31: Gas South Arena, Duluth, Minnesota
  • August 3: Citi Field, New York, New York
  • August 6: Capital One Arena, Washington, DC
  • August 8: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Ontario
  • August 10: Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Illinois

When and where can we get tickets?

ATEEZ offers a few levels of pre-sales for their concert tickets. Members of their fan group, ATINY (a contraction of “ATEEZ and “destiny,” FYI), get first dibs on May 1, 2024, at 10 a.m. local time. The second pre-sale begins the next day, May 2, at 10 a.m. local time. To qualify for this pre-sale, fans must register on their official website beforehand. Finally, general sales begin on May 3, 2024, at 10 a.m. EDT .

Ticketmaster is in charge of all official sales, so don’t be tempted by secondary market resellers or scalpers. These organizations ultimately drive up ticket prices and could even sell you fraudulent tickets. Ticketmaster recommends that you create a profile on their site and enter payment information before the date so you’ll be ready to click “purchase” the moment tickets go on sale. So get online early, log in, and snap up your seats before the scalpers can buy entire sections and resell them at a higher cost!

Once again, expect prices to be higher this year. But since ATEEZ is planning to fill massive stadiums, we like our odds of finding good seats at a decent price. If you miss the North American tour, ATEEZ will perform next at Summer Sonic Japan  on August 17 and 18 in Osaka and Tokyo.

The Wisconsin Black Historical Society collects Black history artifacts. Here's what to expect on a visit

Clayborn Benson , a retired photojournalist, opened the Wisconsin Black Historical Society in 1987. Benson was inspired to start the society — which collects and preserves artifacts of Wisconsin's Black history, displays exhibits and hosts tours and lectures — after he researched and produced a documentary called "Black Communities" in the 1980s.

Benson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in February 2024 that his love of history started as a child growing up in Milwaukee. He said, "My father would tell me stories of the people who lived here, and then, when he taught me to drive, we would drive past different places where things had happened in Milwaukee’s history."

Here's what you should know about the Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum.

Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.

Where is the Wisconsin Black Historical Society?

The Wisconsin Black Historical Society is at 2620 W. Center St., Milwaukee.

What are the hours for the Wisconsin Black Historical Society?

The society is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. It's closed Sunday. The society is also closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

How much does admission cost?

Admission costs $10. Members receive free admission.

Annual membership levels are available at different price points. Individual memberships ($25), senior/student memberships ($15) and family memberships ($50) entitle holders to free admission, invitations to exhibition openings and preview days, and discounts on merchandise, lectures, trips and tours. Memberships at the contributor ($150), patron ($350) and business ($500) levels entitle holders to the same benefits as well as being listed as supporters of the museum. There are also several corporate level memberships available.

Are tours available?

The historical society offers guided tours to groups from schools, community organizations and others. To schedule a group tour, visitors should call the museum at least two weeks in advance at (414) 372-7677 and fill out the online group tour form and email it to [email protected].

What kinds of exhibits are at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society?

There are several exhibits showcasing artifacts of Black history and providing context for Wisconsin's place in American history. Some of those exhibits include:

  • Work’n in the promised land: The African American labor experience in Wisconsin: This exhibit focuses on historical events that have affected Black workers, particularly in Wisconsin.
  • Ancient Egypt to Modern Milwaukee: This mural by artist George Gist is described on the society's website as "a larger-than-life panorama of African American history" that traces the stories of Black people from ancient civilizations to rural Wisconsin settlements to modern-day Milwaukee.
  • NAACP Civil Rights Tribute Bus Exhibit: In 2004, the Milwaukee County Transit system created a Civil Rights tribute bus to honor the 2005 NAACP convention that was held in Milwaukee. The bus depicted Civil Rights pioneers, including Milwaukee legends Lloyd Barbee, Vel Philips and Father James Groppi.

Does the Wisconsin Black Historical Society have resources for students?

The Black historical society website has a learning center with links to lesson plans, articles and worksheets regarding people and events in Wisconsin's Black history. Examples include:

  • a lesson plan about Milwaukee's abolitionist movement
  • a 1950 guide to African American businesses in Wisconsin
  • the transcript of an interview with a woman who moved to Beloit from Mississippi during the Great Migration
  • several biographies of prominent people in Wisconsin's Black history

What if I have an artifact to donate?

Because the society documents local history, they welcome people's donations of artifacts or documents. According to the society's website , they're particularly interested in the following items from the 19th century:

  • Photographs depicting neighborhoods of early Black Milwaukee
  • Materials that document Black-owned businesses in early Milwaukee
  • Everyday garments worn by early Black Milwaukeeans
  • Uniforms and any other work-related items
  • Materials depicting the Civil Rights struggle, sit-ins and the March on Milwaukee

If you have something to donate, call or write to the museum to describe the item. Calls can be made to (414) 372-7677. Letters should be sent to the Wisconsin Black Historical Society at 2620 W. Center St., Milwaukee, WI, 53206.

Although the museum does not guarantee items will be displayed, they will be preserved at the society.

About Electronic Tolling

The Cline Avenue Bridge is an “all electronic” toll facility (meaning no stopping at a toll booth) and is designed to provide users with a smooth and easy drive. Electronic toll collection allows traffic to flow faster and helps reduce fuel consumption by eliminating the need to fully stop when driving on a tolled highway or bridge.

Establishing an account with an E-ZPass or I-PASS transponder will be the fastest and lowest cost option to pay your tolls on the new Cline Avenue Bridge. Sensors on an overhead structure read the transponder and capture an image of the vehicle’s license plate. This electronic form of payment for your tolls is also used on the neighboring Indiana Toll Road, Chicago Skyway, and Illinois Tollway.

Vehicles without a valid, funded, and appropriately registered E-ZPass or I-PASS account will be sent a notice by mail. The system will capture the license plate number and a toll invoice will be sent to the vehicle’s registered owner.

NOTE:  If the transponder is absent from the vehicle, improperly mounted, or undetected for any other reason, the system will attempt to match the license plate to an E-ZPass or I-PASS account before mailing an invoice. Therefore, it is important for the vehicle’s license plate to be added and appropriately updated on the E-ZPass or I-PASS account.

For more information on:

Using the E-ZPass network, visit: e-zpassiag.com

E-ZPass & I-PASS Questions

Cline Avenue Bridge does not issue our own E-ZPass, however we do accept E-ZPass or I-PASS from any other issuing agency.

Questions related to E-ZPass and I-PASS should be directed to the agency that issued the transponder.

How the House Voted on Foreign Aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

By Catie Edmondson ,  Martín González Gómez ,  Kayla Guo ,  Robert Jimison ,  Albert Sun and Karen Yourish

Votes on the Foreign Aid Bills

Source: Office of the Clerk, U.S. House of Representatives

The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. The package, which now goes to the Senate, is almost certain to become law.

The Senate passed similar legislation in February. But in the face of distinct bases of opposition to different elements of the legislation, which threatened to tank the package as a whole, Speaker Mike Johnson advanced the foreign aid using a convoluted strategy: It split the package into three parts, each of which received its own vote, added a fourth bill with Republican priorities as a sweetener and melded it all together again once everything passed.

The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them.

How Different Factions Voted

Note: Progressive Democrats are members of the House Progressive Caucus. Hard-right Republicans include members who were supported by the House Freedom Fund during the 2022 midterms, opposed Kevin McCarthy’s election as speaker in January 2023, or voted to oust Mr. McCarthy from the speakership last October. The fund is the campaign arm of the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-right faction founded in 2015.

A majority of Republicans voted against Ukraine aid on Saturday, in a reflection of the stiff resistance within the G.O.P. to continuing to aid Ukraine against President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia’s invasion. The coalition that voted against the bill extended from right-wing members of the House Freedom Caucus to leadership, such as Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, the No. 3 House Republican. On Israel aid, on the other hand, most Republicans voted “yes.”

Thirty-four right-wing Republicans also opposed aid to American allies in the Indo-Pacific, while Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, declined to take a yes-or-no position and voted “present.” Representative Bob Good, Republican of Virginia and the chair of the House Freedom Caucus, was one of the 21 members of his party who voted against the Israel package. Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt.

While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza. The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California.

Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill. Fourteen of those Democrats voted on Saturday in favor of aid to Israel, while 12 Democrats who voted to allow the package on the floor on Friday then cast votes against the funding itself.

Twenty-five Republicans voted against the fourth bill, which included measures that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States and that would redirect funds from seized Russian assets to help aid Ukraine. Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives.

How Every Member Voted

An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel. They are Democrats, not Republicans.

The sports retailer is introducing tagging sprays across its stores nationwide as part of a ramping up of security measures.

It will start using SelectaDNA sprays, which can be misted on property and criminals.

The sprays work by leaving a synthetic DNA and UV marker which does not wash off and can be used to link assets to owners and criminals to crime scenes.

JD Sports said the measure was in response to a significant increase in shoplifting in UK.

In particular, it said it had seen a rise in "steaming" - where large gangs run into stores, threaten staff with violence and then run off with armfuls of stolen products.

The SelectaDNA spray reportedly does not cause any harm or damage to skin, clothing or property.

Lidl plans to open hundreds more supermarkets across Britain.

The German discount chain, which is now the UK's sixth biggest supermarket, is targeting thousands of new shoppers as it continues its expansion.

It currently has about 960 stores but is targeting more than 1,100 across England, Wales and Scotland.

In the coming months, the chain will welcome shoppers to new stores across the country, from Bristol, Birmingham and Berwick in Scotland.

In London, it will be opening new stores in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton and Canning Town.

But it says it is eyeing growth in more locations. If it successfully finds a good location, it is willing to pay a finder's fee of 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price, or 10% of the first year's rent for leaseholds, which would equate to £22,500 for a completed £1.5m site purchase.

A finder's fee can be paid to any member of the public who identifies a suitable site for it to open a new store.

Richard Taylor, Lidl Great Britain's chief development officer, said the company was "continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion".

"As we look ahead, we're excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we're planning to open across the country in the coming months and years," he said.

Mortgage approvals rose to 61,300 in March - the highest number since September 2022.

They had been at 60,500 in February, according to the Bank of England.

While this is positive, industry experts are reporting that uncertainty over the direction of interest rates this year is prompting caution.

Mortgage rates have risen in the last few weeks as markets went from pricing in a base rate cut in June to thinking it may be August.

US inflation proving stubborn has led to concern here that the path to the 2% target may be bumpy - meaning the base rate may have to stay high in order to constrain spending and thus ease price rises.

Forecasts of three cuts this year from the current 5.25% have been scaled back to two.

Hina Bhudia, partner at Knight Frank Finance, said: "The sun is out and buyers are returning from their Easter break, so we'd usually expect these to be the busy weeks before the summer; however, the uncertain outlook for mortgage rates will undoubtedly weigh on activity.

"It's not just buyers that are frustrated. The lenders are eager to rebuild their businesses after a subdued 2023; however, they are constrained by stubborn inflation and the resulting impact on their cost of funding."

Following Sainsbury's boss Simon Roberts' claim that Britons like self-checkouts...

...we asked Money blog readers, and followers of our LinkedIn page , for their views.

While our inbox was filled with a lot of hate for self-checkouts, our poll of 2,613 people on LinkedIn shows that, overall, Mr Roberts was right...

We have rounded up some of your views here...

Self-checkout is the worst thing to ever happen. Standing like a child with your hand up, one person running up and down to deal with this, underpaid and understaffed. Janice Karaaziz, Money reader
I'll go out of my way to find a cashier, largely because my five-year-old will make a beeline for pressing the scales. I've noticed my local store having fewer and fewer cashiers on - and on many occasions there have been none. We need to think about inclusivity here. There will be some customers who will need a cashier for various reasons, so would expect there to always be at least one on, so stores are accessible for everyone. KaraS, LinkedIn
I try and limit my social interactions as much as possible, out of choice, so most of the time self-checkouts are convenient. Alasdair Corton, LinkedIn
They induce a level of irritation. Sometimes I can be heard answering them back. In general I choose to have my items flung at me by Lidl checkout staff. Siobhan W, LinkedIn
Self-checkout provides a great alternative to customers, especially those with smaller quantity purchases, but personally I think it's sad to see them dominate the front of Sainsbury's stores. In my opinion, it's the removal of one of the greatest ways to provide good customer service. Tom Tregay, LinkedIn
Self-checkouts are great, I will always choose to use one instead of a normal checkout. Some are easier to use than others, the Co-op and Tesco have easy-to-use interfaces whereas Morrisons is a bit more complicated. They'll evolve over time and there's always staff to help out. CG, LinkedIn
They're useful, but when they trigger a "basket check" on nearly every single shop, they begin to lose attractiveness Nicola Bradley, LinkedIn
I tend to argue with them lol. Especially when I can't get it to scan a particular item or you need approval for something so you have to wait for assistance anyway! Plus as a disabled customer I have to juggle my crutch, shopping, scanning and packing. With reduced staff in shops you can't always get the help you actually need. Elizabeth Graney, LinkedIn
Definitely not. So when I go to Sainsbury's I see a lot of older people and no way do they want to use self-checkouts. My mother lives in assisted living and all of them say they hate them. Get a grip, Simon - they are not faster, they are saving you employing more staff. I know my aunt has stood at an Asda til they put a staff member on there. Andrea Robinson, LinkedIn
Robots should never replace humans. Interaction is essential... if machines replace people no one will work, it's a crazy dangerous road. Nicola van Eerten, LinkedIn
The self-checkout is a money-saving exercise. They cut back everywhere. No staff on the shop floor to help. Paper bags in the veg section now cost 30p - for absolutely no reason. Mark, Money reader

Average advertised rents have hit a new high in the UK, according to Rightmove .

Across Britain, excluding London, the average monthly rent being asked for a property coming on the market in the first quarter of 2024 was £1,291, the property website found. This was 8.5% higher than a year earlier.

The average advertised rent in London also hit a fresh high in the first quarter of 2024 at £2,633 per month but this was just £2 higher than the average asking rent in the fourth quarter of 2023.

While average rents have climbed, the property website says there are signs that the pace of the increases is slowing.

There are also indications that more landlords are having to reduce their asking rents, particularly for bigger homes, to meet what tenants can afford.

Rightmove's director of property science, Tim Bannister, said the rental market was "no longer at peak boiling point" but it "remains at a very hot simmer".

We first came across Tom McPhail when he posted this on X...

The pensions expert appeared to be suggesting state pensions were at risk of disappearing.

After speaking to him on the phone, he confirmed that was exactly his concern, warning something needed to be done sooner rather than later to avoid a "catastrophic" situation.

He described state pensions as a social contract – each generation pays taxes and national insurance, which funds the pensions of today's older people, and they hope the following generation will do the same for them.

But with population growth slowing, there's a worry there may simply not be enough people to keep the system afloat in the future.

"There's a significant demographic shift going on in the UK. It started before the Second World War, cohorts of people born in the 1930s have been experiencing significantly longer lives than was the case prior to that, so people now in their 80s are living quite a lot longer," he said.

"But at the same time, we've got fewer children coming through. And so this exacerbates the shift in the age of the population."

He said if he was 20 today, he would be "sceptical" about the promise of a state pension because he isn't sure how it's going to be paid for.

At the moment, the state pension system costs around £120bn a year and more than half of retired people rely on it to make up at least 50% of their income, he added.

Over the next 50 years, Tom predicts the proportion of GDP the state spends on older people will increase from around 16% to 25%.

"I hesitate to use the word unsustainable, but it will certainly start to look challenging," he said.

"If we suddenly switched off the state pension or significantly reduced it, people would be in trouble, so the government can’t do that.

"You can't keep on progressively ratcheting up a more and more generous state pension. The costs of state pensions is going to become increasingly difficult for the younger cohorts to bear."

He pointed to a few ways to potentially salvage the state pension – policy change, more babies being born or people working until they are in their 70s.

"Politicians are going to have to make decisions about how to get out of this kind of political bind," Tom added.

"Time and time again it's just kick the can down the road on the pension question, just put a sticking plaster on it and let the next government deal with the problem.

"You can't keep doing that. So I would really like to see, on the other side of this forthcoming general election... whoever's in power, in collaboration with whoever's in opposition, to just really open it up to some honest conversations about where the demographics are going to take us."

He does note there is one piece of good news: "This happens quite slowly, so we do have time on our side."

Basically, swap rates dictate the pricing of fixed-rate mortgages.

Lenders, such as banks and building societies, borrow in order to lend.

They borrow from financial markets and often these transactions are made using Sterling Overnight Index Average (SONIA) swap rates, which can move around.

By contrast, most domestic mortgages are set on what is known as a "term" rate – in other words, the borrower knows how much interest they will be paying for a set period of time.

To avoid a situation where the SONIA rate goes above the rate it is charging borrowers, which would leave the bank or building society lending at a loss, the lender will seek to enter a "swap" arrangement which protects them from such a situation.

Under such agreements, two parties exchange cash flows with each other. The lending bank will swap the variable payments it may make to service a mortgage (which is fixed to the SONIA rate) for payments at a fixed rate. This insulates the lending bank from unexpected increases in the SONIA rate.

Once a deal is struck based on the swap rate, mortgage providers set their fixed deals for customers, with their own profit margin priced in.

How are swap rates decided?

Swap rates are based on what the markets think will happen to interest rates in the future.

When they go up, so do the rates being offered on the high street, as we have seen in the last week or two amid uncertainty over whether forecasts for a summer base rate cut are accurate.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May. Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

How can I stay in the loop?

You can use the National Rail's  journey planner  to see when trains are running.

Be sure to check it close to when you plan to travel, as it will be updated regularly.

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying this was way below inflation, and was linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef says train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

Royal Mail is temporarily waiving a £5 charge for unsuspecting members of the public who receive post sent with a fake stamp.

The company said it was developing a new scanner in its app which will let customers scan stamp barcodes and check whether they are recognised counterfeits.

While this takes place, the £5 charge for people who receive the post will be paused, Royal Mail said.

It added that it would work to ensure the sender of items posted with counterfeit stamps are charged instead of the recipient where possible.

Royal Mail chief commercial officer Nick Landon said new security measures alongside its barcoded stamps have "led to a 90% reduction" in counterfeits.

"We want our customers to buy stamps with confidence and always recommend that customers only purchase stamps from post offices and other reputable high street retailers," he said.
