The best of road cycling returns with the 2022 UCI WorldTour

The world’s best riders will show their skills in 33 events, starting with the UAE Tour and the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite at the end of February.

Road racing has returned, and the intensity will only pick up with the first events of the UCI WorldTour, as the series progresses through the 2022 calendar. The international elite of cyclists is set to battle across three continents (Asia, Europe and America), with races in 11 different countries. Australia would have brought even more diversity to the calendar, with the traditional opening of the season Down Under, but the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the Santos Tour Down Under had to be canceled due to the restrictions imposed to fight the Covid-19 pandemics.

Sprinters, climbers, puncheurs, rouleurs… every type of established champions and rising stars will find opportunities to shine as they try to succeed the winners of the 2021 UCI World Ranking : Tadej Pogačar (winner of the UCI World Ranking as well as the Stage Race UCI World Ranking), Wout van Aert (One Day Race UCI World Ranking) and Deceuninck-Quick Step (UCI Team Ranking), who still aim to dominate collectively under the Wolfpack’s new name, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team.

Spring battles

The UAE Tour (February 20th-26th) will bring the first battles: tricky stages in the desert, an individual time trial and two mountainous days with summit finishes. Pogačar and the other best stage racers can already jostle in this early season rendez-vous the Slovenian prodigy dominated last year for his UAE Team Emirates. The Slovenian and a cohort of stars will then head to Tirreno-Adriatico (ITA - March 7th-13th), while his countryman Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) and others are expected to race Paris-Nice (FRA - March 6th-13th).

At the same time, Classics specialists will have already started their spring with the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite (February 26th), the traditional Belgian opener, leading to a campaign featuring all the ingredients for many thrillers: Italy’s white roads (Strade Bianche, March 5th) and Classicissima (Milano-Sanremo, March 19th); Belgian cobbles (Oxyclean Classic Brugge-De Panne, March 23rd, E3 Saxo Bank Classic, March 25th, Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields, March 27th, Dwaars door Vlaanderen - A travers la Flandre, March 30th, Ronde van Vlaanderen - Tour des Flandres, April 3rd) and hills (La Flèche Wallonne, April 20th, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, April 24th)…

When you hear that the Omloop is being held this month 😍 #OHN22 pic.twitter.com/x9mq8bsIPL — OmloopHetNieuwsblad (@OmloopHNB) February 1, 2022

The calendar for the final stretch of the spring Classics is slightly adjusted this season to accommodate the French presidential elections. A week after the Ronde van Vlaanderen, riders will face the Dutch traps of the Amstel Gold Race (April 10th), while the iconic Paris-Roubaix is set for April 17th, as the event returns to a spring date after a historic autumnal weekend in 2021 . Eschborn-Frankfurt (May 1st) will cap off this intense stretch for the one-day race fans.

Grand Tour assaults Stage racers will keep the intensity rising in Spain with the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (March 21st-27th), quickly followed by the Itzulia Basque Country (April 4th-9th), and in Switzerland (Tour de Romandie, April 26th-May 1st), ahead of the first Grand Tour of the year: the Giro d’Italia, with a first ever start in Hungary (May 6th) and a spectacular finish in Verona (May 29th), where Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) sealed his victory in 2019. The Ecuadorian climber is expected at the start again. He’ll face grueling battles in his effort to succeed his teammate Egan Bernal, the winner in 2021.

There will be little time to gaze in awe at the views of the Verona Arena, as the Critérium du Dauphiné (FRA - June 5th-12th) and the Tour de Suisse (June 12th-19th) will bring more battles ahead of the Tour de France (July 1st-24th). The three-week event will celebrate Danish cycling culture, with a Grand Départ in Copenhagen , and lead the riders over cobbles and summits as iconic as L’Alpe d’Huez, to challenge the two-time reigning champion Pogačar.

Don’t expect the Slovenian wonderkid to take a break after reaching the Champs-Elysées - he’s already announced his intention to return to the final Grand Tour of the season, La Vuelta Ciclista a España (August 19th-September 11th), where he had a breakthrough performance in 2019.

Final pushes for glory

Ahead of the three-week race from Utrecht (the Netherlands) to Madrid, puncheurs and climbers will have another challenge at the Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa (ESP - July 30th), and the Tour de Pologne (July 30th-August 5th) will offer more thrills on its varied routes.

Action will keep going all around the world during La Vuelta Ciclista a España with one-day races such as as the Bemer Cyclassics (GER - August 21st), the Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France (August 28th) and the Canadian Grand Prix in Québec (September 9th) and Montréal (September 11th).

Classic experts should also thrive in the seven stages of the Benelux Tour. The world’s best cyclists are then expected in Wollongong (Australia), for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships (September 18th-25th), before they take on the final UCI WorldTour challenges of the season: the Monument, Il Lombardia (ITA - October 8th) ahead of the fireworks of the Gree-Tour of Guangxi (CHN - October 13th-18th).

Cycling Viewership Statistics

Several cycling tournaments in the world gather enormous crowds. For example, the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships expects to attract 1 million spectators in person and a huge TV audience worldwide.

That’s how expansive the cycling fan base is. And that’s only for one of the many cycling events held annually. Continue reading the article to know more about viewership statistics.

11. As of 2022, Tour de France is the most-watched cycling event, with 3.5 billion viewers.

(Amelia, NBC Sports Group)

As one of the most significant cycling events in the world, the 2022 Tour de France’s viewership count didn’t disappoint. France Télévisions and Eurosport reported that “a Frenchman watched an average of 5 hours 41 minutes of the Tour”.

In the US, the Tour de France drew more than half a million viewers on USA Network, proving that Americans have a growing familiarity and viewership of the event.

12. Yrokshire’s UCI Road World Championships 2019 gathered a record-breaking TV audience of 329 million.

(Insider Media Limited)

Compared to the 2018 viewership rate, the global viewing figures during the 2019 UCI Road World Championships increased by 31%.

The event was televised in 124 countries and was deemed as “inclusive, innovative, and inspiring” because of its diverse viewers from various cities and regions in the world.

Cycling Demographics

Across 28 countries, the global average bicycle-riding frequency is 35% , and people’s favorability towards bicycles is 82%. The figures imply that no matter what reasons people have for using bikes, most still prefer it over other modes of transportation.

In this article, learn more about the distribution of bicycle usage in various countries and demographics.

13. Topping the global ranking, 67% of Indians ride a bicycle at least once a week.

Many Indians prefer to ride a bicycle compared to other modes of transportation. According to a 2022 survey, 9 out of 10 urban Indians believe cycling reduces carbon emissions. The survey also revealed that:

  • 88% believe cycling plays an important part in the reduction of traffic.
  • 8 in 10 urban Indians (82%) want new roads and infrastructure to provide greater emphasis to bicycles over automobiles.
  • 2 in 3 urban Indians (65%) believe cyclists in their area respect traffic rules.
  • At least 55% of the urban Indians polled believe cycling is extremely dangerous in their area.

14. Globally, 24.5% of men are likelier to commute among cyclists than women, at 22.9%.

(Mashable ITDP)

From the figures above, it is apparent that there is a gender gap that exists in cycling. There are several reasons why fewer women ride bikes:

  • Women and girls may not have consistent access to bicycles
  • Lack of protected bike lanes for road safety
  • Intersectional issues of marginalized women
  • Weak sense of security against violence and harassment

Although these issues can’t be solved immediately due to their systemic nature, it’s important to note everyone has societal roles in achieving a safer, more inclusive, and better environment for cycling.

Closing Remarks

Cycling sports statistics only show that more people are becoming familiar with cycling as it continues to gather millions of audiences worldwide.

Not only as a competitive sport, but cycling also offers many benefits. Many rely on their bikes for work, exercise, or recreation. Cycling has truly been integrated into our shared social environments and spaces.

In the US, around 51.4 million riders participate in cycling as a sport. Meanwhile, 7.1% of Germans and 10.2% of Danes in Europe participate in cycling.

Cycling is prevalent in Europe, especially in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark, and Spain.

Cycling has various health benefits, such as increased cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, decreased stress, and reduced anxiety and depression.

Cycling is a low-impact sport that causes less strain and injuries. It only involves fluid motion and controlled movements.

Tour de France: Tadej Pogačar snares yellow with stage 4 victory in high mountains

Evenepoel, Ayuso and Roglič trail UAE Team Emirates rider into Valloire and put seconds into Vingegaard at the line

Tadej Pogačar laid down a hefty marker at the Tour de France after he attacked near the summit of the Col du Galibier to win stage 4 in Valloire and move back into the yellow jersey.

His teammates imposed a relentless pace on the mighty Galibier, whittling the front of the race down to a UAE Team Emirates-dominated group of eight riders, and a Pogačar attack seemed inevitable. The only surprise was that it took so long to materialise, but Pogačar’s eventual acceleration, 900 metres or so from the summit, was a violent one.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was the only rider to match Pogačar’s initial onslaught. Although the Dane was distanced on the final ramps of the climb, he put up fierce resistance, cresting the summit just eight seconds down.

On the vertiginous 18km drop into Valloire, however, Pogačar’s power and descending skills came to the fore, and the Slovenian gradually stretched out his advantage over Vingegaard, whose Tour preparation was interrupted by his heavy crash at Itzulia Basque Country in April.

After limiting his losses on the technical early part of the descent, Vingegaard flagged on the final approach to Valloire, where his deficit stretched out beyond half a minute, and he was caught by Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep), Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) with a shade over 4km to go.

Out in front, Pogačar was every bit as remorseless as he had been at May’s Giro d’Italia, inexorably extending his advantage. He would cross the line 35 seconds clear of the chasers, who were led home by Evenepoel and Ayuso, with Vingegaard coming in a further two seconds back.

Thanks to the time bonuses he collected atop the Galibier and at the finish, Pogačar now holds a lead of 45 seconds over Evenepoel in the overall standings, while Vingegaard lies third overall at 50 seconds.

On the evidence of the final kilometre of the Galibier, this Tour might yet prove to be a Pogačar-Vingegaard duel for the fourth successive year, but after losing out for the past two Julys, the Slovenian will be heartened by his early advantage here.

“I’m super happy. This was more or less the plan, and we executed it really well,” said Pogačar, who had trained extensively in the area ahead of the Tour.

“I wanted to hit hard today, I know this stage really well, I’ve been training a lot of weeks already, it felt like a home stage. I had confidence at the start. I had good legs, so I had to try.”

Evenepoel was the best of the rest on the Galibier behind Pogačar and Vingegaard, cresting the summit only 15 seconds down, but the Belgian lost ground on the technical early part of the descent, on roads made treacherous by melted snow.

“I was a little surprised to see wet road on the first few corners, so it was bit scary,” Pogačar explained. “This descent is super fast, so if you know the road it’s a big help.”

Roglič, who had looked to be in severe difficulty when the road climbed, recovered well on the descent, scrambling back up to Rodríguez et al, but he is now already 1:15 down on his compatriot in the overall standings.

The Tour had never climbed this high this soon in the race, and there was a high rate of attrition on this early foray into the Alps, which took the peloton from Italy into France by way of the climbs of Sestriere and the Col de Montgenèvre.

UAE Team Emirates whittled down the group of favourites on the interminable climb of the Galibier, with yellow jersey Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) among those distanced by the forcing of João Almeida and Adam Yates, who had set down a startling pace on the ascent.

Jorgenson and Bernal conceded 2:42, while Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) lost four minutes and Carapaz came home more than five minutes down.

The windy conditions on the ascent saw UAE rotate their pace-making duties, with Almeida the most impressive, though Ayuso also stepped up with a bracing turn of his own in the last 2km of the ascent.

“At first, it was a lot of headwind on the climb, so on the wheel it was not super hard,” Pogačar said. “The team did a super good job but I didn’t want to go too early because of the wind. I had to make all the difference I could in the last few hundred metres. Then I knew the descent to the finish.”

How it unfolded

After a relative truce on the long run to Turin on Monday, the Tour returned to its more usual state of ceaseless belligerence for stage 4, as the race entered the high mountains and crossed into France for the first time.

An uphill start to a short, mountainous day like this was already liable to provoke breathless racing from the gun, but ASO’s decision to place an intermediate sprint just 18km into the stage only heightened the intensity of the high-octane opening.

With the green jersey firmly in mind, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was among the most persistent attackers as the peloton splintered and reformed on the gentle lower slopes of the long climb towards Sestriere.

Bernal and Roglič were surprisingly among those caught behind, though both men would make it safely back up to the yellow jersey group further up the climb. Red Bull insisted that Roglič had fallen back due to a lapse in concentration rather than a lack of strength, but it was a needless error all the same. The Galibier would reveal more.

After Pedersen took the intermediate sprint at Castel del Bosco, the race gradually settled into some kind of a pattern on the 40km haul to Sestriere. The sprinters were distanced, men like Bernal and Roglič made it back up to the yellow jersey group and, 30km into the stage, a 17-man break took shape.

Stevie Williams (Israel-Premier Tech), Chris Juul-Jensen (Jayco-AlUla), Julien Bernard (Lidl-Trek), Bruno Armirail (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale), David Gaudu, Romain Gregoire, Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Mathieu van der Poel ( Alpecin-Deceuninck), Oier Lazkano (Movistar Team), Raúl García Pierna, Cristian Rodríguez (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Kobe Goossens (Intermarché-Wanty), Warren Barguil (DSM-firmenich-PostNL), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan), Odd Christian Eiking, Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) quickly built up a lead of two minutes, and that gap would remain more or less static over the climbs of Sestriere and the Col de Montgenèvre, where the Tour crossed from Italy into France.

Williams signalled his king of the mountains ambitions by outsprinting his breakaway companions to maximum points both at Sestriere and atop the Montgenèvre. Behind, UAE Team Emirates were doing bulk of the pace-setting in the bunch on the climbs, with some help from the EF Education team of yellow jersey Richard Carapaz. Pogačar’s teammates would underscore their intentions by briefly splitting the yellow jersey group on the drop off the Montgenèvre.

At the foot of the mighty Col du Galibier, the escapees had 2:48 in hand on the yellow jersey group, though that gap was always going to shrink on the 23km haul to the summit, some 2,642m above sea level.

Lazkano attacked midway up the climb, but the Basque’s only reward was to be the last man standing from the break as UAE’s startling collective strength washed over the Galibier, and he was caught 7.5km from the top.

By then, Simon Yates had already been distanced, and more lofty names were to follow, as UAE shredded the group in the manner of the Team Sky of old. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) was dropped 6.5km from the summit, with Carapaz following soon afterwards.

Within another few hundred metres, Vingegaard and Roglič had lost all their teammates. Evenepoel still had Mikel Landa for company, but everybody – Vingegaard included – was a passenger as UAE imposed their will on the race and beat a pathway up the mountain for Pogačar.

Nice is still a long way away, but the Giro-Tour double will feel considerably closer for Pogačar after his latest startling feat of strength here.

For the first time in its 111-year history, the 2024 Tour de France began in Italy. The Grand Départ saw the field of 176 riders across 22 teams make the 128-mile journey from Florence to Rimini in just over five hours.

Two Team dsm–firmenich PostNL riders took control after an early breakaway to win the opening stage. Frenchman Romain Bardet took first ahead of teammate Frank Van den Broek and both finished with a time of 5:07:22. Saturday's victory marked Bardet's fourth career Tour de France stage win and with it came his first career yellow jersey.

Mark Cavendish breaks Tour de France record for most stage wins, passes Eddy Merckx for 35th victory

Cavendish sprinted for the win 100 meters from the finish line, making history one year after losing in a crash with jasper phillipsen.

mark-cavendish-getty.jpg

Manx cyclist Mark Cavendish made history at the Tour De France with his 35th stage victory, breaking a 34-win record held by Eddy Merckx, who set it from 1969-1975. Cavendish pulled away in the fifth stage of the tour around 100 meters away from the finish line, passing Jasper Phillipsen for a new chapter in the race's history books. He finished with a time of 4 hours, 8 minutes and 46 seconds -- as did everyone else who finished in the top-ten.

Cavendish had tied Merckx's record in the 2021 Tour de France and had an opportunity to surpass it last year. However, his 2023 season was cut short by a collision with Phillipsen that resulted in a broken right collarbone. Cavendish had pushed back his retirement following the untimely end to his 2023 season, and his desire for another stage win propelled him back to the Tour de France.

Immediately after the race, Cavendish told ITV , "I'm in a little bit of disbelief. I put a big gamble on this year to make sure we are good here at the Tour de France…We gambled coming here, trying to win at least one stage. That's a big gamble for my boss, Alex Vinokourov, [and] the team to do…to go all-in, and we've done it."

"It's how the Tour de France is," he added . "You go as hard as you can til you get to the finish line, and maybe your life changes if you cross that line first. If it doesn't, you don't. That's the nature of this race and what makes it so beautiful."

Cavendish won his first Tour De France in 2008, claiming the fifth, eighth, twelfth and thirteenth stages. He's continued to display excellence throughout his career and battled through illnesses this year to compete in the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey in April, where he won the second leg, and the Tour of Hungary in May, where he took a sprint win in stage 2.

Cavendish's sports director, retired cyclist Mark Renshaw, compared Cavendish to a "fine wine" upon his victory.

"He just gets better and better," Renshaw said. "I think the team had so much confidence in him. They've had confidence all year. We've signed great riders, we've changed the team to look after him, to get him possible to win, and he's just been mega-committed. I don't know how many days he's been with his family, but this year, it's not many, and that's the kind of commitment you need as a bike rider."

At 39 years old and having raced professionally since 2005, many expected the Tour de France to be Cavendish's last. If so, he can go out knowing he etched his name to the prestigious tour's record books and capped off an illustrious career the only way he knew how: on top.

'It's our moment.' Girmay's Tour de France breakthrough comes as the cycling worlds head to Africa

Stage winner Eritrea's Biniam Girmay celebrates on the podium after the third stage of the Tour de France cycling race over 230.8 kilometers (143.4 miles) with start in Piacenza and finish in Turin, Italy, Monday, July 1, 2024. (AP Photo/Daniel Cole)

Biniam Girmay grew up in Eritrea watching the Tour de France on TV each July with his father.

He idolized three-time world champion Peter Sagan but never dared to dream of matching the Slovakian cyclist’s exploits.

Recommended Videos

Then came Monday, when Girmay became the first Black African rider — actually the first Black cyclist from any continent — to win a Tour stage.

“I never dreamed to be part of (the) Tour de France,” Girmay said after wiping away some tears.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Next year, Rwanda will become the first African country to host cycling’s road world championships.

“It’s our moment to show our strength and our potential,” Girmay said.

And to think the initial plan for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team from Belgium was for the Eritrean to lead out the sprint for Belgian teammate Gerben Thijssen. But when Girmay lost touch with his teammates in the frenetic finale, which saw Mark Cavendish and others caught behind by a crash, Girmay was given the green light.

“I heard on the radio to do it for myself, because I had already lost the wheel,” Girmay said. “For me it’s always easier to find (space) myself. Then it’s just close your eyes and go for victory.”

Sagan, who won 12 stages in his Tour career, would have been proud of the way Girmay squirmed his way through a tiny space to edge past Fernando Gaviria — a winner of seven Grand Tour stages — at the line.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Girmay was more careful in his celebration this time.

“This win is worth more,” Girmay said. “I don’t have words to explain how important this victory is for me and for my continent.”

Girmay started riding in single-day races at home in Eritrea and then left home for the International Cycling Union’s development center in Aigle, Switzerland, in 2018.

In 2021, he won a silver medal in the under-23 road race at the world championships in Belgium. Then at the start of 2022, Girmay won a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race in Belgium.

Merhawi Kudus and Daniel Teklehaimanot paved the way for Girmay when they became the first Eritreans to ride in the Tour de France in 2015 — when Teklehaimanot became the first African rider to wear the King of the Mountains polka-dot jersey. They rode for the South African MTN-Qhubeka team.

Human rights groups describe Eritrea as one of the world’s most repressive countries. Since winning independence from Ethiopia three decades ago, the small Horn of Africa nation has been led by President Isaias Afwerki, who has never held an election.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

“This is so important for cycling,” said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team. “Now the world can see what is possible when we give these guys a chance.”

And Girmay isn’t done yet.

He’s now high up in the points standings for the Tour’s green jersey that goes to the race’s top sprinter. And there are a handful more sprinting stages to come in this year’s race.

He’s just 24.

“It’s my time,” Girmay said. “Now we are really part of the big races. We have a lot victories so it’s our time, it’s our moment. I never cry, but inside I am, I just have no words.”
