Chase Adds Emirates as Ultimate Rewards Transfer Partner

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Emirates' new 777-300ER first class is easily one of my favorite first-class products , but it's not especially easy to book with miles — assuming you can even fly it on a route that works with your itinerary. However, this top-notch cabin just became more accessible to a huge group of points and miles enthusiasts, thanks to a new partnership between Emirates and Chase.

chase travel emirates

Skywards, the loyalty program of both Emirates and FlyDubai , is joining as an Ultimate Rewards airline partner, offering 1:1 transfers from Chase Ultimate Rewards . Skywards joins the following existing Ultimate Rewards partners, becoming the 13th transfer program:

  • British Airways
  • Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

You can also transfer points to Skywards from both American Express Membership Rewards and Capital One at a 1:1 ratio and 2:1 ratio, respectively. In both cases, points transfer instantly.

Note that in many cases, Skywards redemptions come along with some very hefty surcharges, so you could be on the hook for a significant cash co-pay, depending on your origin, destination and class of service. For example, a one-way first-class award from New York-JFK to Dubai (DXB) requires 136,250 miles plus $842. Considering that TPG values Ultimate Rewards at 2 cents each , you'd be looking at $2,725 worth of points — a total cash equivalent of just over $3,500. That's a far cry from the $15,000+ you'd need to book this same flight using cash, though.

chase travel emirates

Potentially of more interest is Emirates' collection of one-off airline partners. The airline isn't a member of any of the three major alliances, but does partner directly with several carriers, including JetBlue and Alaska. You can also find value when redeeming Emirates miles for Japan Airlines flights, with prices from the US to Japan clocking in at 60,000 miles in economy or 125,000 miles in business round-trip.

If you don't have a stash of Ultimate Rewards points, you can earn them with a number of Chase credit cards, including the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which offers a 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. The CSP is a classic choice for both beginners and advanced points and miles experts — read our in-depth review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred for more details.

Emirates Skywards is a welcome if not groundbreaking addition to the Ultimate Rewards program, giving Chase card holders new options for booking the airline's premium cabins, along with flights on both US and international partners. It makes the already robust Chase program even more valuable to points and miles collectors.

Chase ultimate rewards just got classier: emirates joins as transfer partner.

Emirates Joins Chase Ultimate Rewards Transfer Partners

Chase Ultimate Rewards is one of the most popular rewards programs for travelers, and it just got even better. Nearly a year to the day after bringing on JetBlue as an Ultimate Rewards partner, another airline has been added to the growing list of Chase transfer partners — Emirates Skywards.

As of Aug. 25, 2019, Emirates Skywards, the loyalty program for airlines Emirates and flydubai, has officially joined as an Ultimate Rewards airline partner. That means cardholders with eligible Chase credit cards now have the option of transferring their Chase Ultimate Rewards points into Emirates Skywards Miles.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Emirates Skymiles

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the name of the rewards program for Chase cardmembers, offering a variety of redemption options, including travel, gift cards, cash back, and experiences. The Ultimate Rewards program is highly regarded among travelers, as points can be earned from any of Chase’s rewards credit cards and redemption options are some of the best.

Emirates Skywards is the newest to join the list of travel partners that allow those with eligible Chase cards to transfer points at a 1:1 ratio. The following are the current Ultimate Rewards transfer partners:

  • British Airways
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Now, Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card , Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card , and Chase Sapphire Reserve ® cardmembers can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to their Emirates Skywards account. Transfers can occur in increments of 1,000, and your points won’t lose any value in the process as they’re transferred at a full 1:1 value. Skywards Miles can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, including booking flights and hotels, as well as excursions, events, and exclusive shopping opportunities.

What else should you know about this new partnership?

Emirates is the only airline that offers direct flights from the U.S. to Dubai, according to the travel search site Skyscanner . This is great news for anyone interested in such an itinerary, but also anyone looking to travel on to one of the 139 Emirates destinations.

And for anyone with Chase Ultimate Rewards points hoping to experience the airline’s famous first-class cabins, your day just arrived. Flying first class is always a treat, but Emirates first-class cabins are luxurious, to say the least. Named World’s Best First Class of 2019 by Trip Advisor, these cabins feature private rooms, fine dining, an onboard shower, a lounge bar, and more.

chase travel emirates

Now, with enough points, you can snag one of these first-class cabins for yourself. A round-trip first-class flex fare from Boston to Dubai costs 217,500 Skywards Miles as of Aug. 25, 2019. Pay in cash, however, and you’re looking at anywhere between $13,687-$28,903 depending on your travel dates!

chase travel emirates

Even if you fly with Emirates using miles, you’ll still have to pay taxes and fees, including the airline’s hefty carrier-imposed surcharges. These can add up quickly. On that same flight from above, the taxes and fees come out to well over a thousand dollars. Before booking an award trip with Emirates, make sure to account for these expenses.

Get there sooner with these credit cards

If you want to take advantage of this new partnership but lack the necessary Ultimate Rewards points , applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve can be worthwhile — especially right now.

One of the best travel credit cards from Chase for both beginners and advanced travelers, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is currently offering a welcome offer allowing you to earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. For a premium travel experience, the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® is among the best, and new cardmembers can earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

This blog post walks you through the steps on how to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to Emirates Skywards.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Points is a popular points currency among points enthusiasts and frugal tourists like myself.

The reason? They offer the opportunity to redeem points for discounted flights across multiple airlines, as well as free hotel stays.

Since Emirates is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, you can essentially accumulate Emirates Skyward Miles as a result of earning Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) points.

Earning Ultimate Rewards Points is relatively easy and straightforward – it is typically accumulated through generous sign-up bonuses and regular spending using any of the credit cards below:

Important: You Need to Have A Chase Premium Card

To be able to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to the Emirates, you need to own at least one of Chase’s premium cards.

Again, you only need one of these cards to unlock the benefit of transferring to Chase travel partners such as Emirates .

Pro Tip: Without one of these three Chase premium cards, you cannot transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to any of Chase’s Travel Partners. In my opinion, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best of the three.

Deep Dive on Chase Credit Cards: No-Annual-Fee Cashback Cards Versus Premium Cards

Before we proceed with the steps involved in transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Emirates , we must understand the difference between no-annual-fee cashback cards and premium Chase cards.

The table below illustrates which category each card belongs in.

To soften the blow of the steep annual fees on Chase’s premium cards, the bank provides additional exclusive benefits to premium cardholders that are not available to those who only hold no-annual-fee cards.

One of these valuable premium Chase card benefits is having access to my all-time favorite Ultimate Rewards (UR) redemption option –  TRANSFER TO TRAVEL PARTNERS.

chase travel emirates

Redemption Options for Chase No-Annual-Fee Cashback Cards and Premium Cards

Let’s compare the redemption options of “no-annual-fee” cashback cards versus premium travel cards.

Redemption Options for No-Annual-Fee Cards

At first glance, you might think that the choices are pretty generous for no-annual-fee cards, specifically, the cashback and gift card options.

But if you want to maximize the value of your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, it is recommended that you explore redemption methods other than cashback, especially if you also have a premium card.

Unless you have an emergency and need cash, exchanging your hard-earned points for cash or gift cards will not generate the best bang for your buck.

Redemption Options for Premium Chase Cards

The table above shows that  “Transfer to Travel Partners”  became an available redemption option for Chase premium cards.

This exclusive “transfer benefit” will appear on your Chase Sapphire Preferred ,   Chase Sapphire Reserve , or Ink Business Preferred  accounts because they are all premium cards but not in your no-annual-fee cards.

Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Travel Partners Such As Emirates Skywards

It is essential to underscore that each Chase Ultimate Reward point is not created equal.

The value of each Chase Ultimate Reward point will depend on whether they originate from a premium card or a no-annual-fee card.

Even if no-annual-fee cards generate Ultimate Reward points, you cannot transfer them to partners, including Emirates , unless you have one of Chase’s premium cards.

Therefore, I strongly recommend owning at least ONE premium Chase card because this incredibly fantastic redemption benefit would not be possible without one.

Chase Travel Partners

The chart below lists all the Chase travel partners.

Please check their website regularly.

It is not unusual for Chase to initiate new relationships (Hello, Aer Lingus!) and terminate old ones (Bye, Korean Air).

chase travel emirates

What if my Ultimate Reward Points are in my No-Annual Fee Cashback Cards?

Should you find most of your points in a no-annual-fee card, do not worry.

Chase allows the transfer of points between Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards.

Log in to your Chase account and navigate to any of your Ultimate Rewards-earning credit cards.

Look for the “ Ultimate Rewards Points ” button and Click “Redeem” to access your points.

chase travel emirates

Next, click the “Rewards Details” dropdown arrow to find “ Combine Points “.

If this is your first time combining Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, please continue reading for a step-by-step walkthrough.

chase travel emirates

As a general rule of thumb, I suggest transferring all of your no-annual-fee cash-back points to your premium cards , so you can have the ability to move your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to travel partners, such as Emirates , anytime.

This transfer also significantly increases the worth of your Ultimate Rewards Points acquired from your no-annual-fee cards, making them all the more valuable.

chase travel emirates

What if my Personal and Business Credit Cards have Different Log-In   Information?

Before transferring your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points between your personal and business credit cards, you will need to merge your personal and business accounts.

To do so, you can call Chase’s customer service using the phone number on the back of any of your Chase credit cards and request that your accounts be combined into one profile.

“Can you link my personal and business accounts so I only need one username and password?”

During the call, you will be required to provide your personal and business account information to verify your identity. After verification, the agent will then merge both accounts.

Once the accounts are linked, you’ll be able to access all of your accounts with one login and password.

This can save you time and make managing your finances and Chase Ultimate Rewards Points easier.

Whether you have questions about the linking process or need assistance with anything else, Chase’s customer support team is available 24/7 to provide help and support.

Steps for Combining Points or Converting No-Annual-Fee Cashback Chase Points to Travel Points

Log in to your Chase profile and select one of your Chase cards that earns Ultimate Rewards points.

In the image below, I selected my Chase Freedom Flex℠ , which currently has 7,925 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.

I then click “ Redeem ” in the Ultimate Rewards points section (inside the red box).

chase travel emirates

Clicking “Redeem” will lead you to the “ Ultimate Rewards ” page.

Click the “Rewards Details” drop-down menu, then navigate down to “ Combine Points “.

chase travel emirates

Click “ Combine Points, ” then select a no-annual-fee card under “ From ” on the left column.

In the example below, I selected my no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ .

This account will have the points you will transfer to a premium Chase card.

chase travel emirates

Select a premium card under “ To ”, which is the Chase card where you want your points to go.

In the image below, I am moving points from my no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ to my premium card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

chase travel emirates

Initiate the transfer by clicking “Continue.”

You will be directed to a page where you can indicate the number of points you would like to transfer to your premium card.

Since the value of your no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards points significantly increases when transferred to a premium card, I highly suggest transferring all of your points.

Generally speaking, you would always want your Ultimate Rewards Points stored in one of your premium cards.

Click “ Review” once you have made your selection.

If you have two premium cards that include the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , transfer all of your points to the CSR, as that provides the best redemption value among all the other Chase cards.

chase travel emirates

Chase will give you another opportunity to review your selection.

You want to ensure that you transfer no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards Points to a premium card and not vice versa.

In this example, I am moving my Ultimate Rewards Points from my no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ to the Chase Sapphire Preferred , a premium card.

Confirm & Submit.

chase travel emirates

Once you have completed this transfer, you will be notified if it was successful.

Once your points are in your premium card, you can now transfer your Ultimate Rewards Points to Emirates Skywards (see next section).

chase travel emirates

Pro Tip: If you are part of a couple/family who lives in the same address, transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards Points between different individual accounts (between player 1 and player 2) is possible. Holding two premium cards is no longer necessary as long as you meet Chase’s criteria as a household member. One player can keep a premium card, and the other can continue accumulating no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards Points that can be easily transferred to the owner of the premium card. You need to call Chase to initiate this transfer.

Steps for Combining Chase Ultimate Rewards Points (Mobile App)

In the image below, I selected my Chase Ink Business Cash card .

Scroll down until you see the “ Benefits and Rewards ” section.

Click the “ Redeem Points “.

chase travel emirates

Navigate down to “ Combine Points “.

chase travel emirates

Select your “ No-Annual-Fee ” Chase card under “ From “.

Then, select a Chase premium card under “ To “.

In the example below, I am moving Chase Ultimate Rewards Points from my no-annual-fee Chase Ink Business Cash card to my Chase Ink Business Preferred card, a premium card.

chase travel emirates

Since the value of your no-annual-fee Chase Ultimate Rewards points significantly increases when transferred to a premium card, I highly suggest transferring all of your points.

chase travel emirates

Again, you should ensure that you are transferring no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards Points to a premium card and not vice versa.

Congratulations! You are now ready to transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to Chase’s many travel partners.

Before You Transfer Your Chase Points: Check For Emirates Award Space Availability

Before starting the transfer process, you want to ensure that actual award space on your specific dates is available.

The more flexible your travel dates are, the more likely you’ll be able to find award availability that can be booked on points.

My recommended steps are as follows:

First, you must register for an Emirates Skywards Account, which should take less than 5 minutes. Enrolling is free!

Once you are done signing up for your Emirates Skywards account, keep your login credentials handy, as you will need them when searching for award space.

Using your Emirates Skywards account, initiate your search on Emirates.com.

Make sure you fill out the following details correctly:

  • Check Classic Rewards (since you are using miles)
  • Type in the departure and arrival airport
  • Indicate whether your dates are flexible (-/+3 days)
  • Check One-Way
  • Leave the “One-Way” box blank if traveling round-trip

chase travel emirates

After you have selected your dates, indicate the number of passengers and class of service.

Then, click “ Search Flights “.

chase travel emirates

Select your preferred flights and write down the information on a piece of paper or your spreadsheet.

Transfer your points and hope the award space does not disappear while your points are in transit.

How Long Does It Take for Ultimate Rewards Points to Transfer to Emirates Skywards ?

However, Chase has stated that transfers may take up to 7 business days.

I suggest immediately checking your Emirates Skywards online account after transferring to verify whether the transfer was completed.

STEP 8: Book Your Emirates Award Flight

Book the award space once the points are in your Emirates Skywards account.

You have 24 hours to cancel the award tickets if plans change.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to Emirates Skywards on the Chase Mobile App

Performing the above functions, such as combining points and transferring to travel partners, using the Chase Mobile app can initially be a bit confusing.

Here are the steps to navigate the Chase Mobile App so you can quickly transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to the Emirates Skywards program wherever you are.

Log in to your Chase account using your Chase Mobile App.

Indicate the number of Chase Ultimate Rewards Points you would like to transfer to Emirates Skywards .

Remember that this is a one-way street. Any points transferred from Chase to Emirates Skywards can not be reversed, so make sure the award space is available before proceeding with this transfer.

Review transfer details, then “Submit.”

Reminder to only transfer points when you see award availability.

Final Thoughts

Flying for free is my ultimate motivation for accruing travel miles and points.

Whether you aim for premium cabins or discounted airfare, Chase Ultimate Rewards is a currency I highly recommend you accumulate because of its flexibility.

Aside from being a transfer partner of Hyatt and United – the two most common recipients of my Chase points, Emirates is another travel partner that can be an alternative when searching for good deals.

Emirates Skywards can provide access to a vast network of flights and travel experiences.

Using Avios for short-haul flights, upgrades, and partner flights can offer significant savings and enhance the overall travel experience.

Lastly, I hope this blog post made the transfer process much easier to follow. Safe travels!

Here’s how to find if an award seat on Emirates .  You can NOT book Korean Air award tickets online. You have to call Korean Air at 800-438-5000 or 213-484-1900 .

How Can I Use Chase Ultimate Rewards Points To Fly With Emirates

Korean Air is the only Chase transfer partner you can book Emirates flights with.  And, unfortunately, they pass along steep fuel surcharges with award flights.  A round-trip Business Class ticket from the US to Dubai will cost 140,000 Korean Air miles , plus ~$1,500 in fuel surcharges!

How Can I Use Chase Ultimate Rewards Points To Fly With Emirates

That sounds like a lot, but Emirates Business Class seats sell for ~$6,000+.   And First Class seats can be  ~$20,000+!

So you’ll basically pay  ~$1,500  for a ticket that costs ~$6,000 (or much more)!  In this example, your 140,000 Korean Airlines miles cover ~ $4,500 ($6,000 – $1,500) and are worth ~3 cents each ($4,500 / 140,000 points).  That’s still a great deal!

Always run the numbers to make sure you’re getting the best deal for your situation.

The Chase Travel Portal Might Be Your Best Option to Fly Coach

If you want to stretch your points, and would rather pass on the lie-flat seats and an on-board lounge, you’re better off using the Chase travel portal to book your flights.  That’s because the fuel surcharges for a round-trip coach flight can cost  ~$500!

Instead of paying 70,000   Korean Airlines miles and ~$500 in fuel surcharges to fly coach, you can buy the same flight for ~$850 .

When you book through the Chase travel portal , you’ll get the ticket for ~68,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred , Chase Ink Plus , or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available).  Or if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve , it will only cost you ~57,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  And no fuel surcharges!

Is Alaska Airlines Still the Best Option for Award Flights With Emirates?

Alaska Airlines used to be the best way to book an Emirates flight with miles.  But they changed their award prices on Emirates by a lot .

Depending on your destination, and the cabin you fly, it can cost  up to 100% more Alaska Airlines miles  to fly on Emirates with Alaska Airlines miles.

How Can I Use Chase Ultimate Rewards Points To Fly With Emirates

Still, in most cases, using Alaska Airlines miles is the better choice.  Because Alaska Airlines doesn’t pass on fuel surcharges like Korean Air!

By booking a coach ticket for 15,000 more Alaska Airlines miles miles than Korean Air charges, Alaska Airlines will spare you the  ~$500 in fuel surcharges!  And by paying 25,000 more Alaska Airlines miles for a Business Class ticket, you’ll save ~$1,500 in fuel surcharges!

Bottom Line

If you have a lot of Chase Ultimate Rewards points and want to fly Emirates, you can:

  • Transfer points to Korean Air (best for folks who want to fly Business Class or First Class)
  • Buy Emirates tickets through the Chase travel portal (best for folks who want to fly coach)

You can also transfer your points to Marriott for a Hotel + Air Package , but this is not a good deal!

Korean Air tacks on big fuel surcharges , so always do the math to see if it makes more sense to buy a ticket through the Chase travel portal instead of transferring points to Korean Air.

There are better ways to redeem both your Alaska Airlines miles and Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  But if you want to experience Emirates, these are two ways to do it!

Chase has landed another airline as a travel transfer partner.

As of Aug. 25, 2019, cardholders with eligible Chase credit cards have the option of transferring their Chase Ultimate Rewards® points into Emirates Skywards miles at a 1:1 ratio. Emirates Skywards is the loyalty program for Emirates and flydubai, two airlines based in Dubai.

The addition gives more choices to those with Chase cards that allow 1:1 point transfers to travel partners. Because Emirates is the only airline that offers direct flights from the U.S. to Dubai, according to the travel comparison site SkyScanner, this news could be especially good for folks interested in booking such an itinerary. It’s also a boon for those hoping to snag a spot in one of the airline’s famous first-class cabins, or travel to one of the 80-plus countries and territories it serves.

Here’s what you should know.

Eligible Chase cardholders can make transfers in 1,000-point increments, at a 1:1 ratio. In other words, you can turn 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points into 50,000 Emirates Skywards miles. The points transfer instantly, Chase confirms.

It’s possible to combine cash and miles on Emirates. If you don’t have enough Skywards miles for an award ticket, you can use a combination of cash and miles for the redemption. This can make it easier to cash in even small amounts of rewards.

Enough miles can get you into Emirates’ first-class cabins. Emirates’ first-class cabins are luxurious, featuring fine dining, an onboard shower and seats that convert into beds. And with enough Skywards miles, you could pay for such a trip. A round-trip first-class flex fare from Los Angeles to Dubai costs 247,500 Skywards miles, as of this writing. When you consider that such an itinerary could otherwise cost upward of $10,000 in cash, that’s a pretty sweet deal.

Emirates’ surcharges can be expensive. When flying on Emirates with miles, you’ll still have to pay taxes and fees, including the airline’s hefty carrier-imposed surcharges. Those can add up to hundreds of dollars even when flying economy, and can potentially devalue your miles. Before booking an award trip with the airline, make sure to budget for these expenses.

The addition of Emirates Skywards gives eligible Chase cardholders 13 potential travel transfer partners, across a variety of airline and hotel loyalty programs. Cards eligible for such point transfers include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card .
