CHOCTAW, Miss. , Feb. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise (CRDE), owned by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, is thrilled to announce the official name of its upcoming travel plaza: "Crystal Sky." The name draws inspiration from the nearby Tribal community in Winston County . Known as Crystal Ridge , this community shares part of its name with the travel plaza. This exciting development promises to be a beacon of hospitality, convenience, and cultural pride for travelers passing through the Louisville area.

"As we unveil the name of our Travel Plaza, I am filled with gratitude," said Tribal Chief Cyrus Ben . "This endeavor isn't just about bricks and mortar; it's about weaving connections. Crystal Sky will not only serve travelers passing through but will also uplift the Louisville / Winston County area and honor the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians."

In April 2023 , during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Travel Plaza, Tribal Chief Cyrus Ben unveiled an innovative contest. Tribal members were invited to submit their suggestions for the plaza's name, reflecting the spirit of the community and the natural beauty of the surroundings. The response was overwhelming, with 258 entries pouring in. After extensive rounds of voting and thoughtful consideration, the winning name emerged: "Crystal Sky." The final decision was made collaboratively by the Tribal Council and CRDE Board members.

We extend our congratulations to tribal member Dachelle E. of Louisville, MS , whose submission captured the essence and vision of the property. As a token of appreciation, Dachelle will receive a $500 cash prize in recognition of her creativity and contribution to the community.

Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise To Build A $25 Million Project In Louisville

Yesterday, the Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise (CRDE), owned and operated by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a new travel plaza to be located on South Church Street in Louisville, Mississippi.

Layout of the proposed facility:

The Louisville Travel Plaza will be an 18,000-square-foot facility and will feature 150 slot machines , a Sportsbook lounge, 3,000 square feet of retail space, a family friendly restaurant and fueling stations for commercial and passenger vehicles.

It will be open 24/7 and will be found on 18 acres of land on the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Reservation, Crystal Ridge Community, found within the Louisville city limits.

This project is worth $25 million and is projected to employ nearly 100 people.

Commenting on the new project, Cyrus Ben, Tribal Chief, said: “This project has been discussed for some time and today it is great to see it come to fruition as we break ground.”

“This is a new project for CRDE that represents business growth for our Tribe. I am excited for both the Crystal Ridge community nearby and for the Winston County/City of Louisville community. We have a wonderful working relationship and as Tribal Chief for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, it is a great moment for me that we can work together to collectively better provide for our people.”

Furthermore, the main goal is to be officially open in the summer of 2024.

Tribal competition to decide on a permanent property name:

Beside Tribal dignitaries, the ceremony was attended by important people such as representatives of the city of Louisville, the office of Governor Tate Reeves and the office of Congressman Michael Guest.

Moreover, Louisville Travel Plaza is the preliminary name of the project. On that note, Chief Ben reported on a tribal competition to decide on a permanent name for the new property.

Louisville’s ability to lure many customers:

Chief Ben thinks Louisville is able to lure a lot of customers.

In this regard, he said: “You got Mississippi state university with the population, not only residents with the city of Starkville but also the student population as well and to be able to have that traffic here that goes further up into the golden triangle area and so we are very grateful for that opportunity because we’ve seen from an economic development standpoint what growth has gone on in the golden triangle area and to be able to get closer to that and be partners here in this community as well.”

Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise manages hotels and casinos.

In addition, it also deals with wedding venues, accommodation, restaurants, seminar halls, suites, bars, lounges and spa centers.

It offers its services to global customers.

Fiji is a popular destination for families.

When considering family travel, Fiji, a cluster of over 300 tropical islands in the South Pacific, doesn’t immediately come to mind. Most people thing of Fiji is a mecca for honeymooners and romantic travel (which it is). Known for its postcard-perfect beaches, turquoise lagoons, lush rainforests, and warm-hearted locals, Fiji has long been a sought-after destination for travelers looking for a picturesque romantic escape. But guess what, it’s also been attracting families for years.

With its blend of adventure, cultural immersion and Fijian hospitality, families have been enjoying Fiji because it ticks all the boxes.

Fiji is famous for its diverse range of outdoor activities that engage both kids and adults. Snorkeling is a must-do activity, with many spots accessible right from the shore. The shallow lagoons surrounding the islands are teeming with colorful coral reefs and marine life, offering an unforgettable underwater experience for beginners and seasoned snorkelers alike. Older kids and parents might enjoy diving, with the chance to encounter manta rays, turtles, and even reef sharks.

Fijian culture is rich and deeply rooted in communal values, which families are warmly welcomed to experience. Many resorts offer cultural activities like traditional Fijian dances (meke), fire-walking shows, and kava ceremonies. Visiting a local village can be a highlight, where families can learn about local customs, try Fijian food, and interact with the friendly villagers. These experiences offer a unique opportunity for children to gain an appreciation for different cultures and traditions.

Secret Sauce for Families

Kids from the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort interact with local kids to create unique cultural ... [+] experiences and friendships.

While there are plenty of family-friendly resorts in Fiji, one popular option is Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. “Thirty percent of guests come back to the resort within two years,” says Euan Taylor, General Manager. He notes that 70% of overnight guests are families, including many multigenerational groups. The secret sauce at the resort? The Bula club.

Netflix’s Best New Movie Arrives With A Perfect 100% Critic Score

‘emily in paris’ dethroned in netflix’s top 10 list by a new show, how dallas cowboys owner jerry jones accidentally bought into an alleged $100 million mississippi cancer cluster.

Taylor notes that when the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort (commonly referred to as JMC resort) first opened 30 years ago, the main demographic was divers. Since then it’s grown to include both divers and families. Kids six and younger have an individual nanny assigned to them. What’s unique about that, is instead of dropping kids off in a day-care-like setting with most of the activities indoors, the nanny can tailor that program to that child’s age and needs. So a one-year-old and a five-year-old will have very different experiences. For kids older than six, there are five kids to one caregiver (called a Bula Buddy). The kids in the group often become best friends with each other as well as strongly attached to their Bula buddy. They want to go to the Bula club each day , which allows moms and dads time to relax.

Kids experience many different activities at the bula club.

Families have become such a big part of the JMC resort profile that Taylor notes that of the 25 bures at the resort, eight are currently two-bedrooms, but that the number will double to 16 in 2025. The overall number of rooms will stay the same at 25—the resort wants to keep its intimate size—but the demand for family suites is changing the room category.

Many resorts experienced high occupancy in 2023 due to pent up post-covid travel requests and JMC resort was no different with 2023 being it’s highest recorded occupancy to date.

For Americans, Fiji is not next door. There was to be something pretty special for families to book multi-flights and many hours for a vacation.

“Children become more adventurous here,” Taylor explains. Maybe they don’t like swimming at home, but they are willing to try it here, maybe they won’t eat fish at home, but will taste it when eating with other kids.” Parents appreciate the growth and independence they see in their kids.

Diving in Fiji

Fiji is considered one of the top dive destinations in the world.

Fiji is considered one of the best diving spots in the world, so it’s not surprising that many JMC resort’s occupants take part of the on-site three dives a day. What is really interesting, is just how many kids get certfied on property. While some families plan ahead—the kids do the online coursework and then when they get to the resort they do the open-water part, often diving was not even on the radar of the kids before getting to to the resort.

“We certify a lot of families—especially kids—with many people signing up at the resort,” says Dan Koyamaibole, the PADI dive manager. He notes that often kids will see their parents diving—or even other kids diving—and want to try it. In some cases, whole families get certified on vacation.

School Under the Sea

Marine biologist Johnny Singh teaches kids the School Under The Sea (SUTS) program.

Any parent who takes a child on vacation hopes there’s some educational component going on, but at JMC resort, learning about sustainability and taking care of our planet is an intentional program. Johnny Singh, one of the two marine biologists at the resort, developed a program called School Under The Sea (SUTS) to make learning fun. Activities range from the educational coral planting and mangrove rehabilitation, to night snorkeling (with flashlights) and to trips to neighboring villages so kids can interact with local Fijian kids.

Kids get stamps for each activity and they quickly fill up their "passports" during their stay.

At the end of the week, there’s graduation night. “Kids receive their stamped passports and a graduation-shirt, they are so proud of their accomplishments,” says Singh. He notes that the key to making sustainability and ecotourism a permanent part of the resort, is by getting kids involved. The hands on experiences allows kids to ask questions and get a deeper meaning of their environment. Singh gets down to the kids’ level—and meets them where they are. He makes learning fun by implementing new and different activities on a daily basis. It’s a win-win for kids, parents and the environment.

Things To Do On Campus

Things to do off-campus, where to eat, where to stay.

Life in Oxford may be in tune with the seasons and semesters of The University of Mississippi, but it is no ordinary college town. It is a literary town, a food town, a music town, an historic town, an art town. Equally celebrated for college sports and its cultural scene, this place attracts all kinds of residents, creating a vibrant community unlike any other.

When you consider the stately old homes (including Rowan Oak, the former residence of William Faulkner), a charming town square packed with shops, galleries, and restaurants, and welcoming locals , you’ve got a pretty ideal place to live or to visit. Unlike most  small towns , there’s more to discover in Oxford than you can fit into a single weekend. Which is a good thing, because after one visit, you’ll definitely be back. Read on for the best things to do while you're visiting Oxford, Mississippi.

Tour The University Of Mississippi

This North Mississippi town’s academic roots run deep. In 1837, it incorporated and named itself after Oxford, England, with the hope that it would also be home to a great university one day. About 10 years later, The University of Mississippi opened, and in time, Oxford became the South’s quintessential college town. For 110 years, it was the state’s only comprehensive university, and it was also one of the first in the South to admit and hire women. Today, Oxford—on campus and off—reflects the diversity and creativity of our region.

It's a beautiful campus, and a stroll among Ole Miss's sprawling acres of magnolia trees and live oaks is well worth your time. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon admiring the gorgeous landscape of the university. Visit the Lyceum, the gorgeous Ionic Greek Revival-style administration building completed in 1848, which was utilized as a hospital during the Civil War.

Listen To Live Music At The Lyric Theatre

If it's music you're after, head to the historic Lyric Theatre . The theatre, which has been a staple in Oxford since the late 1800s didn't begin as a theatre. In fact, the now-theatre was first a livery stable owned by William Faulkner's family. In the 1920s, the stable was turned into a theatre for live performances and silent films—and was then when it was named The Lyric Theatre. Later, The Lyric became solely a movie theater, and in 1949, William Faulkner walked from his Rowan Oak to the livery stable from his childhood to watch MGM's "Intruder in the Dust," a movie adaptation of one of his novels.

Today, after an extensive renovation in 2007, The Lyric Theatre is Oxford's center for performing arts —mostly concerts. While you're in town, check out the venue's calendar for events.
