Plucked from obscurity during the early days of the Red Sea’s tourism drive, the fishing village of Hurghada has long since morphed into today’s dense band of concrete that marches along the coastline for more than 20km. Still, it's a convenient destination for combining a diving holiday with the Nile Valley sites. Further offshore there is still superb diving aplenty; local NGOs are helping the town clean up its act, and the southern resort area and Sigala's sparklingly modern marina have brought back some of Hurghada's sheen.

13 Top-Rated Things to Do in Hurghada

Written by Jess Lee Updated Dec 27, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Hurghada is Egypt's oldest and most famous resort.

Offshore is the colorful underwater spectacle of the Red Sea's world of coral and fish life that first brought Hurghada to worldwide attention.

Back on solid ground, the once-tiny fishing settlement of Hurghada has mushroomed into a resort city with attractions and amenities that cater directly to tourists.

For northern Europeans (who make up most of Hurghada's tourism influx) this is one of the best places to visit for a winter sun-and-sea escape, with sandy white beaches and blue skies in abundance throughout the year.

But while Hurghada's main tourist attraction tends to be flopping on the beach, there are plenty more things to do, both in the water and on dry land, for travelers who want a taste of adventure.

For ideas, see our list of the top tourist attractions in Hurghada.

Beach at Hurghada

Hurghada's best patches of sand have all been claimed by the shore-side resorts that stretch along the coast, both north and south of town.

Even if you're not staying in one of the hotels, nearly all of the resorts offer day access to non-guests.

To really sample Hurghada's beach life, though, you should book yourself in for a few nights of resort living. Hurghada has beautiful all-inclusive resorts for the perfect getaway.

The best beaches lie south of the main town area, which is called Sigala .

From here, the main resort area begins sprawling for kilometers down the coast. The areas known as Sahl Hasheesh (18 kilometers south of Hurghada Airport) and Makadi Bay (30 kilometers south of Hurghada Airport) are home to some of the Red Sea coastline's prime pieces of white-sand beach and best hotels.

Giftun Islands

The Giftun Islands are one of Hurghada's most popular boat excursions, with prime swaths of white sand to soak up the rays and snorkeling opportunities galore on offer.

For those who aren't scuba diving enthusiasts, the easily-accessed coral reefs in the area surrounding the island shore are an excellent taster of the Red Sea's beauty.

During the height of tourism season, when dozens of boats descend on the islands daily, treat a Giftun Islands trip solely as a beach trip, as the crowds scare off any sea life.

In quieter periods, while paddling close to shore, you could spot colorful fish flitting through the clear water,

Those not interested in underwater exploits can simply claim a palm-frond shelter on the beach, sit back, and enjoy the sun.

Diver photographing a wreck in Abu Nuhas

Egypt's Straits of Gubal, a narrow strip of water squeezed between the Red Sea coast and the western shore of the Sinai Peninsula, is one of the Red Sea's major diving destinations and is easily accessed from Hurghada.

This area is known chiefly for its wreck diving and is home to The Thistlegorm (a WWII cargo ship rediscovered by French diver Jacques Cousteau), renowned as one of the world's top wreck dive sites.

Accessed by liveaboard from Hurghada, The Thistlegorm is easily the Straits of Gubal's most popular dive site, but divers who want to explore farther will find plenty of other opportunities to dive.

One of the most rewarding diving areas in the Straits of Gubal is Abu Nuhas , within dive-boat day-trip distance from Hurghada.

This area around Shadwan Island in the Straits is home to six separate dive sites with several wrecks.

The main attraction is the wreck of the Carnatic , a UK cargo ship sunk in 1869, which is still in incredibly good condition, with its skeletal remains home to flourishing coral and abundant fish life.

The Greek ship Chrisoula K (sunk in 1981) and the German Kimon M (sunk in 1978) are two more popular wreck dives in this area, with plenty of opportunities to spot lionfish, triggerfish, and pipefish among the wreckage.

Four-wheel drive expedition in the desert

With so much action happening in the water, some travelers forget that back onshore there's an entire desert world to explore.

Among Hurghada's most popular on-the-ground things to do are quad biking, Jeep expeditions, and dune buggy trips into the sand dune hinterland.

You don't have to travel very far off-road from the resort town to discover the acacia tree studded wadis (valleys), sandwiched in by red-tinged mountains, that make up most of the landscape of the Eastern Desert.

A popular way to experience this desert hinterland is on the five-hour quad bike safari in Hurghada , which includes a break at a Bedouin village and a camel ride.

Gota Abu Ramada dive site

Also known as "The Aquarium," Gota Abu Ramada is a dive site with huge amounts of marine life and a coral garden of pinnacles.

One of the most popular dive sites near Hurghada, it is used by many dive operators as a try-dive site for novice divers. If you're in Hurghada to learn to dive, you will likely be spending some time here.

For more advanced and experienced divers, the huge variety of sea life is the main attraction.

Triggerfish, lionfish, and clownfish are always whizzing through the ethereal blue waters here, and many divers also manage to glimpse the resident eagle rays.

Hurghada Marina

Hurghada Marina is a rather swish and modern addition to the central district of Sigala. Since it opened, it has become one of the city's major dining destinations and comes alive after dark.

Head here at sunset to promenade next to the Red Sea or sit back with a tea and sheesha (waterpipe) at one of the cafés, while soaking up the last of the evening light. Afterwards, stay on to dine at one of the restaurants here, which offer a range of cuisines from classic Egyptian dishes to international fare .

Dining with views over the bobbing yachts and the Red Sea stretching to the horizon can't be beaten.

Address: Hurghada Marina Promenade, Sigala

Colorful fish in the Red Sea at Hurghada

The best underwater sites of Hurghada's coastline can only be accessed by diving. If diving isn't for you, though, there are still plenty of shallow reefs that can be experienced by snorkeling.

The area surrounding the Gifton Islands is one of the most popular places to visit for snorkeling.

Trips such as this Red Sea snorkeling trip stop on the main Gifton Island for swimming and sunbathing before heading on to two nearby reefs for snorkeling. It includes pickup and drop-off from your Hurghada hotel and a full-day boat trip, with lunch. There is plenty of time for relaxation on board as well.

El Gouna Marina

El Gouna is a purpose-built resort town just 27 kilometers north of central Hurghada , so it is easily visited on a day trip from the city.

It's known for its water sports offerings, particularly kitesurfing and wakeboarding, as well as operators offering scuba diving and sailing.

Specialty kitesurfing centers offer both kitesurfing lessons, multi-day courses, and equipment rental on Mangroovy Beach here.

At the southern end of the resort town is Sliders Cable Park, one of the world's biggest cable parks and a major addition to any wakeboarder's list of things to do if they're in the Hurghada area.

El Gouna is also one of Egypt's top golfing destinations with two world-class courses: one 18-hole course, and another that's currently 9 holes but is slated to be extended to 18 holes.

There are excellent modern international dining options here around El Gouna's marina, so it's also a great choice for an evening visit.

Bedouin Dinner Tours

For a night away from the hotel, one of the most popular evening tourist attractions in the Hurghada area are the Bedouin dinner tours offered by many of the resorts.

For foodie travelers this is a must-do for the chance to sample the wholesome Egyptian dishes that never make it onto restaurant menus.

Tours, which sometimes include a camel ride, head out into the desert or to nearby Bedouin settlements to feast on flavorful local cooking while reclining on colorful cushions in a traditional Bedouin tent setting.

It's an atmospheric way to be introduced to Egypt's wonderful array of home-style cooking.

Sindbad Submarine

Hurghada's Sindbad Submarine offers the opportunity of seeing some of the Red Sea's famed underwater sights without getting your feet wet.

This tourist submarine is the only one operating in the Red Sea.

It delves below the Red Sea's surface to a depth of 22 meters, so passengers can glimpse the abundant flitting reef fish that inhabit the reefs of colorful soft corals.

Submarine trips take about one hour , and although they don't go very far offshore where the better coral reefs can be viewed, for non-swimmers, it provides an opportunity to see the magical world below the sea's surface, which the Red Sea is so renowned for.

Camel rides

Whether you want to go for a short stroll along the beach (great for the kids) or are looking for a longer one- or two-hour ride into the desert, all of Hurghada's resorts offer a chance to sample camel riding.

Longer trips usually head out to one of the Bedouin settlements not far from town and offer a chance to see the desert landscape, backed by the Red Sea coast's craggy mountains, from the high saddle.

All are guided by Bedouin camel-men, so you don't have to stress about skittish camels suddenly shooting off into a gallop, and you can simply sit back and enjoy the views.

Hurghada's twinkling city lights may scupper any plans of sky-watching while inside the town itself, but one of the most popular nighttime attractions for visitors here are the astronomical night tours, where your nighttime focus is entirely on the star-studded desert sky of your dreams.

Trips journey out of the city after dusk and into the lonely desert, where you'll spend an evening looking up into the wonders of the night sky with a telescope on hand for closer inspection.

With the incredible clear skies in this part of the world, it's one of the best chances most people have of witnessing the full beauty of the stars.

Hurghada Aquarium

If you've been out snorkeling or diving and want to identify what you've seen, then Hurghada Aquarium in the northern part of the central town area (known as Ad-Dahar) can help you out.

These days, the aquarium is showing its age and could do with an update, but it still has the only decent display of Red Sea marine life in the Hurghada area.

For non-swimmers, it's also a good chance to see the many different varieties of the Red Sea's abundant fish life up close, though to see them in a natural habitat, you'd be better off buying a ticket for the Sindbad Submarine.

Luxury Hotels:

  • South of town, the Baron Palace Sahl Hasheesh is a luxury beachfront resort with a sprawling pool and multiple restaurants. For families, the animation team and kids' club make this a good choice.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • The Sunrise Garden Beach Resort is an all-inclusive resort with a good strip of beachfront and plenty of things to do for those who want to do more than soak up the sun. Amenities and activities include a water park, wonderful spa, and tennis courts, plus horseback riding and archery.
  • The affordable, all-inclusive Jaz Makadi Saraya Resort is another good choice for a range of activities, with its own aqua park, tennis court, spa treatments, and dive center.

Budget Hotels:

  • In El Gouna, north of Hurghada, Cook's Club El Gouna has a great location on the central lagoon, comfortable rooms, an inviting pool, and a strip of private beach.

Egypt Travel Guide: Plan Your Perfect Trip

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Hurghada, having spent the first hundred years of its life as a sleepy little fishing village on the Red Sea, is now one of the most popular beach and diving destinations in the Middle East -- and for good reason. Hurghada is frequently in TripAdvisor's Top 10 Most Popular Destinations in the World and usually has a whopping amount of entries in Scuba Travel’s World’s Top 100 Dive Sites .

So combine the spectacular diving with 365 days of sun and beach weather, and you’ll start to get why Hurghada is such a tourist favorite.

Quick Facts

The coastal area of Hurghada is divided into Hurghada the city and its surrounding resort towns: El Gouna , Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay

Hurghada is on mainland Egypt (ie., not the Sinai peninsula where Sharm el Sheikh is), and is sandwiched between the Red Sea and Egypt’s eastern desert and mountains

Hurghada’s main claim to fame besides its fantastic diving are the 5 star, all-inclusive beach resorts, many of which have inhouse water parks for families and tons of activities

It’s a four hour flight from most European cities and a 45 minute flight from Cairo (4.5 hour drive)

Best Time To Go

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Hurghada is a year-round destination, but it really depends on your personal preferences. Spring and fall are Hurghada’s ‘high season’ -- it’s when the weather is at its most ideal (beach weather without soaring temperatures), so that’s when you’ll find Hurghada at its busiest.

Considering it’s a coastal resort city, summer is a great time to go too obviously, but only if you can handle daily temperatures in the mid-to-high thirties (Celsius) or the nineties (Fahrenheit) and super-strong sun.

Lots of Europeans also like to escape below-zero temperatures in winter and hightail it to Hurghada, where it’s sunny daily with highs of mid-twenties Celsius or mid-seventies Fahrenheit.

How To Get There

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

If you’re coming from abroad (or even planning to fly domestically), then just fly into Hurghada International Airport. Once you land, it’s easy to either get an airport taxi from outside the arrivals hall or call a car to pick you up (ABC Taxi, more info below). If you’re staying at a hotel, you can also easily arrange pre-arrival for your hotel to send a car to pick you up.

If you’re coming from Cairo , then you have one of three options: a) drive, b) take a bus, or c) fly. Driving from Cairo is now a super-smooth trip thanks to the new Galala Road which allows you to bypass the scary two-way twisty mountain roads of Ain el Sokhna. It takes about 4.5 hours from Cairo.

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

If you’re coming by bus , then GoBus offers over 20+ buses daily between Cairo and Hurghada. They offer different types of buses according to what kind of ticket you buy (for example, the Elite Plus bus has individual LCD screens for each seat).

You can find more info on: https://go-bus.com/en

As for flying, the trip from Cairo to Hurghada takes about an hour.

Where To Stay

If you check out the accommodation options on a hotel booking website, it’s easy to get overwhelmed because there are SO MANY hotels. So before you choose one, it’s important to understand where exactly your hotel/rental is and the pros/cons of each location.

1. A hotel in Hurghada city

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Hurghada city proper is home to tons of hotels, varying from budget 2 star hotels to stunning 5 star hotels on the beach. The popular areas to stay in are El Mamsha (a long pedestrian street full of hotels, restaurants and bars) or the coastal Old Sheraton Road, near the Hurghada Marina Boulevard. Then you have a bunch of larger resorts on Hurghada's southern coast stretching all the way down to Sahl Hasheesh, the first main resort town south of Hurghada.

Pros: you’re close to the action, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Transportation is easy via regular cabs or ABC taxi (info below).

Cons: the city isn’t as peaceful as a resort town and most of the budget hotels don’t offer the same array of amenities as the big resort hotels.

2. A hotel in a nearby resort town like Makadi Bay, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Outside of Hurghada proper are several different resort towns: El Gouna (half an hour north by car), Sahl Hasheesh (half an hour south by car), Makadi Bay (45 minutes south by car) and Soma Bay, which is technically in the Safaga area of the Red Sea, but some people still consider it Hurghada (an hour south by car).

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

Pros of staying in a resort town: these resort towns are secluded and pristine, and many of their hotels are all-inclusive; you won’t have to worry about anything while you’re there. Some of the big hotels also have waterparks for the kids and the hotels can arrange all sorts of adult and family activities.

Cons of staying in a resort town: Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay don’t offer much outside of the resorts -- you won’t find all the restaurants, bars and local life that you would in Hurghada city, and it’s at least a half hour drive each way if you decide to go into Hurghada city. El Gouna is the exception -- you can find a full detailed guide to what El Gouna has to offer here . Soma Bay also a handful of restaurants and bars in its Marina area, but not as much as Hurghada or El Gouna.

3. An apartment rental

In Hurghada city and El Gouna, you can find lots of different villa and apartment rentals on sites like Airbnb.

travel guide to hurghada egypt

Pros: Your own space with a kitchen for cooking, plus some of the rentals have their own private pools.

Cons: you won’t have hotel staff to arrange trips, transportation or activities for you.

How To Get Around (Transportation in Hurghada)

Regular cabs

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

If you’re staying in Hurghada city, an easy way to get around is just flag down a passing cab. Chances are, their meter won’t be working, so it’s best to tell the driver where you want to go and agree on the fare before you hop in.

ABC Taxi or other chartered taxis

Hurghada, Egypt: A Local Guide For First-Timers

If haggling with cab drivers isn’t up your alley, then ABC Taxi is a great choice. They’re metered taxis based in Hurghada city but you can order them from the airport, El Gouna, Soma Bay or the other resort towns. You can request one right away or book one for later, and their cars arrive quickly.

ABC Taxi phone number: +20100 222 8294

There are other chartered taxi companies in Hurghada, but we've personally used ABC Taxi the most and they've never let us down (and this isn't even an ad!)

Uber & Careem

Yup, Uber and its Middle Eastern counterpart Careem are available in Hurghada (the main city area).

7. Explore Hurghada the city

If you want to get a feel for the ‘real’ Hurghada, away from the curated resort experience, then the best way to do this is by exploring the city.

El Dahar -- the ‘old town’, where a few souks and bazaars are. This is the area where most locals live and it’s very different than the touristic areas; it’s an eye-opening look into the ‘real’ city.

Hurghada Marina Boulevard -- the polar opposite of El Dahar, where everything is shiny and new. There’s restaurants, bars and shops galore on the yacht-lined marina.

Old Sheraton Road (also known as El Sekala ) -- parallel to the sea, it’s where local life and touristic life melt together. It’s a long busy street filled with budget hotels, dive centers, tour agencies, local shops and bazaars, Hurghada’s best seafood, banks, coffeeshops and cafes, restaurants (both local and touristy) and a mix & match of other things that any of the city’s inhabitants or visitors need.

8. Religious Sites

-El Mina Mosque -- El Mina translates to ‘the port’, and it’s a fitting name for this mosque built right on the Hurghada Red Sea harbor, with little fishing boats and bigger yachts dotting the water around it. Built over an area of 4,000 meters, this mosque has 25 domes, a large marble courtyard and two towering minarets. The architectural style is eclectic, with nods to different Islamic motifs and designs.

Hurghada is also a great place for shopping, or at least, for souvenir shopping. While the markets aren’t quite as big as those you’ll find in Cairo, they are much easier to navigate here.

You can find shops and vendors selling everything from Egyptian headscarves – you will need these if you’re heading into the desert! – to shisha pipes that you can take home with you.

You can haggle and joke with the shopkeepers – yes, haggling is mandatory here, if you don’t want to pay the highest prices! Then you can relax in a local cafe, enjoy fresh juices, or teas and coffees after you’ve made a few purchases.

4. Go to the Marine Museum and Aquarium

The Hurghada Marine Museum and Aquarium offers you the chance to get close to the underwater world of the Red Sea, without ever having to get wet.

If snorkeling or diving isn’t your thing then this is definitely the best way to learn more about the incredible level of biodiversity waiting beneath the waves.

You can stroll through underwater tunnels, turn up at feeding time to see a frenzy, and learn more about the aquarium and the marine life on guided tours all through the day.

5. Spend a Day in the Giftun Islands

One of the best things to do in Hurghada is to visit the beautiful Giftun Islands.

Located just a short boat ride away from the Marina, this small collection of offshore islands is perhaps the most spectacular natural feature in the area.

The rugged islands are surrounded by crystal clear water that shimmers turquoise in the bright sunlight. You can lounge on the beach, hike across the rocky plateaus, and you can snorkel the coral reefs.

You can join organized excursions from Hurghada that will take you island hopping, dropping you off on the best beaches or simply letting you out in the Red Sea at the best snorkeling spots.

Head out on the waters of the Red Sea on a full-day snorkeling tour from Hurghada .

You’ll travel by boat toward Giftun Island, where you can jump in to swim and snorkel with the native marine life. Lunch will also be provided on board.

6. Go Scuba Diving

One of the best things to do in Hurghada is Scuba Diving. Indeed, for many tourists, Scuba Diving is the main reason that they come to Hurghada, and many return year after year once they’ve had their first taste of the Red Sea.

There is a huge range of dive sites along the coast, making Hurghada perfect for divers of all abilities. It’s a great place to learn too.

Many of the resorts have dive schools and swimming pools on-site where you can do the theory and the training before heading out into the open ocean.

Once you’re qualified, there are shallow dives you can reach by walking straight off the beach. There are also deeper wall dives that drop off out in the Red Sea and there are excellent specialty dives if you’re more advanced, including night dives and wreck dives.

Discover the Red Sea’s spectacular visibility and vibrant marine life with this comprehensive package.

Qualified scuba divers can enjoy two dives , accompanied by an instructor, at sites like Abu Ramada, Small Giftun, or Umm Gamar. Non-divers are welcome to come along and stay on the boat.

7. Enjoy the Amazing Snorkeling

If you’re not a qualified diver or just want a more relaxed time on the water, then there are plenty of great snorkeling opportunities along the coast too.

In fact, some of the best dive sites are coral reefs which are just a few meters underwater and that means that you can just as easily snorkel them as you can dive them.

You’ll be impressed by the biodiversity of the Red Sea and the clarity of the water. Walk-in off the beaches to the shallow reefs or take a boat ride out to beautiful snorkeling spots such as the Giftun Islands.

Discover an Egyptian island paradise on a full-day tour from Hurghada to Giftun Island National Park , and enjoy sun, sand and world-class snorkeling.

Watch for dolphins during the 45-minute ride from the coast, then slip into the water to explore a thriving reef system.

Snorkel alongside bright fish and vibrant coral in the protected area, and pause for a scenic picnic lunch onboard your boat.

Head to shore to check out Giftun Island’s many active options, keep exploring the reef or simply soak up the sun before returning to Hurghada.

8. Dive on Shipwrecks

If you’re an advanced diver though then one of the best things to do in Hurghada is to dive the shipwrecks.

Due to the strategic location of the Red Sea and its use as a shipping channel, wrecks abound here.

The most impressive is the wreck of the Thistlegorm, a supply ship that was sunk during World War II.

9. Try Some Watersports

As well as underwater activities, Hurghada is a hot spot for other watersports too. At the resorts and the beaches, you can hire out everything from jet skis to banana boats, to add a little bit of excitement to your beach holiday.

Hurghada is also a great place for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and parasailing too, and you can take lessons on the Red Sea or easily hire out equipment for the day.

You’ll also be able to organize private tours, you can rent kayaks and canoes, or you can just hire out a sun lounger and do nothing at all!

Cruise over the Red Sea to spot and swim with wild dolphins, and ride a banana boat on this full-day trip from Hurghada .

Sail to the Dolphin House, an area known for its high density of wild dolphins. While you’re here, snorkel around the fish-filled corals or sunbathe on deck—the choice is yours.

10. Try Quad Biking in the Desert

The mostly flat deserts that spread inland from the rugged and rough coastline are the perfect terrain for quad biking.

Quad bikes are easy to handle and you don’t need any previous experience to drive them. You can join the regular tours that head out into the desert, searching out hidden canyons or hurtling over sand dunes.

Go 4-wheeling in the Sahara Desert and visit a Bedouin village on a 5-hour quad bike experience from Hurghada with a private guide .

Get a taste of Egypt’s traditional desert culture by learning how to ride a camel, tasting local food and taking in a colorful evening performance.

11. Take a Desert Safari

If you want to travel further afield into the deserts and empty spaces that are found in Egypt, then you can join a Desert Safari.

Strap in tight as you’re thrown around on the off-road tracks and sand dunes in the back of a four by four.

12. Book a Bedouin Dinner

If you have a newfound appreciation for the desert lifestyle, then one way to learn more about the region’s oldest inhabitants is to join a Bedouin Dinner tour.

Head into the vastness of the Egyptian desert, as you journey to a Bedouin Camp hidden in the sands.

This is one of the best things to do in Hurghada, and you’ll spend the evening in the desert, eating in the company of Bedouin nomads, as you learn more about their cultures and more about the desert.

13. Enjoy an Astronomy Tour

Out in the vastness of the desert, you’ll quickly realize that at night time, it might be cold, but it’s beautiful.

The skies are incredibly dark once you get out of sight of the towns and resorts on the coast, and one of the best things to do in Hurghada is to join an Astronomy Tour out into the desert.

Learn about the different constellations and learn how the Bedouin would find their way using the stars.

14. Brave a Submarine Tour

One of the more unique things to do in Hurghada is to go on a Submarine Tour.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the underwater world but don’t feel comfortable snorkeling or diving, then Hurghada’s very own Submarine gives you the chance to get face to face with the fish.

Join this fun submarine tour for a fantastic excursion underwater . You can clearly see, film and photograph the Red Sea’s most famous corals, fish, and other marine life. Through large panoramic windows and in your personal swiveling chair you surely won’t miss a thing!

15. Hit the Nightclubs

Egypt might be a Muslim nation, but that doesn’t mean that the locals don’t enjoy a good party every now and then!

In fact, you’ll be surprised to find that Hurghada is full of bars and Nightclubs, and they aren’t just aimed at the tourists either.

This is Egypt’s premier nightlife spot and it’s a great place to party and to hit up the night clubs after a day of exploring, or even after a day of doing nothing at all!

First Time in Hurghada: A Guide for Beginners

Makadi Spa Hotel

Disclosure: Click links in this article, we may get a small commission Learn more

We remember our first time in Hurghada – it was October 2005 and we booked a last minute unspecified 3* all-inclusive hotel deal, as was all the rage those days. It only cost £300pp for a week, including flights!

Luckily, we landed on our feet and ended up staying at the luxury 5* Grand Resort Hotel .

Back in 2005, going somewhere for the first time was a bit of a leap of faith. You didn’t have sites focussed on Hurghada to rely on, and what we’d have given for a ‘first time visitor guide’ like this.

Hurghada has come a long way since 2005, and continues to attract thousands of tourists from the UK every week – and it’s not hard to see why.

We’ve put together this guide for anyone who’s in the same place that we were, 20 years ago. If you’re planning your first trip to Hurghada , here’s our guide to the things you should know to make the most of your experience.

Top Attractions to Visit

There are so many places to see and things to in Hurghada , and realistically you’re not going to tick them all off during your first visit.

If you’re visiting Hurghada in Egypt for the first time, you’ll want to explore some of the must-see attractions the resort has to offer. Here are some of the top places to visit:

Giftun Island

This is without doubt one of the most beautiful islands in the Red Sea . Giftun is a natural reserve with colourful coral reefs, and a huge variety of marine life, including dolphins, turtles, and exotic fish.

The best way to discover Giftun Island is by choosing an organised trip. These are available from our travel partners GetYourGuide.com .

Mahmya Island

Located off the coast of Hurghada, Mahmya Island is a paradise for snorkelling, diving, and sunbathing. You’ll be amazed by the stunning turquoise waters and fine white sand beaches.

Hurghada Grand Aquarium

Hurghada Grand Aquarium is a great place to visit for anyone who enjoys marine life. You’ll get to see over 1,200 species of fish, sharks, rays, and reptiles. One of the highlights of visiting here is that there is also a glass tunnel that allows you to walk underwater.

El Dahar is the old town area of Hurghada, probably the most authentic part of the resort. Here, you can find a great blend of popular sights nestled within traditional Egyptian architecture.

Hurghada Centre

Spend a few hours exploring the vibrant souk (market) filled with spices, textiles, and souvenirs, as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Sharm El Naga

If you’re looking for a peaceful and secluded spot, Sharm El Naga is a beautiful beach with a long coral reef that is ideal for snorkelling or diving. You can also just enjoy a camel ride or a sunset yoga class.

How to Get Around Hurghada on Your First Visit

If you’re busy planning your first visit to Hurghada, we fully understand it’s hard to know what to expect. One of the questions you may be asking is how do you get around when you’re there? We have the answer!

Here are some tips to help you move around the are easily, cheaply and safely:

Without doubt the easiest way to get around. Taxis are really common here and you’ll find them everywhere – at your hotel, outside the airport, at bus stations etc. One thing that’s different from the UK is that most of the vehicles don’t have a meter! So, it’s HUGELY important that you agree the fare before you start your journey.

If there is any reluctance from the driver to do this, then our advice would be to walk away. It’s not worth putting yourself in a difficult situation.

The local bus system covers most parts of the city. They’re cheap – so a big tick in the affordable box – but they can also be really crowded. And we mean REALLY crowded during peak hours. The best thing to do is check with your hotel before you travel to find out what your best option is.

A pretty unique experience. As much an attraction as convenience. Microbuses are smaller than regular buses – think a tiny minibus and zoom around at speed. They are a far more informal way of travelling around and you can just hail them by the side of the road – remember to ask where they’re going though!

Rental Cars

Honestly – don’t! Driving in Hurghada can be challenging due to the high level of traffic and unfamiliar road conditions. The only rule seems to be that there are no rules. Take a bus or a taxi. Live to see another day.

Hurghada is a relatively small city, and walking is a viable option if you are staying in the city centre. However, during the summer months, walking can be tiring due to the heat, so it’s important to carry water and protect yourself from the sun.

The Best Time To Visit Hurghada

When planning a visit to Hurghada for the first time, timing is everything. This part of our guide will provide you with useful insight into the best time to visit Hurghada based on things like weather, what you want do and lots more.

Weather Conditions

The peak tourist season in Hurghada is between November and March. This is mainly because the temperature is still lovely and warm, but not the extreme heat found during the rest of the year.

You can check out our month-by-month guide to Hurghada Weather , but during this time temperatures hover between 20°C to 25°C, making it an ideal time to explore the town and its surroundings.

Be aware though that during December and January, the nights can get colder, so remember to pack some extra layers if you’re planning on being out and about.

During the summer months (June to August) is when Hurghada experiences the extreme temperatures that many associate with an Egyptian summer. If you don’t enjoy the heat particularly, then we’d strongly advise avoiding this time of year.

Crowds and Tourist Season

It might be your first time in Hurghada, but lots of people have already had their first time and are coming back again! It’s such a popular resort and people return year-on-year and it can get crowded, particularly during the peak season.

Want to avoid the masses? Visit during what’s known as the shoulder season – this is typically April-May or September-October. You get the best of both worlds during these times, as the weather is incredible and you have more space and less queues everywhere. It’s our favourite time to visit.

Diving and Snorkelling

Hurghada is world-famous for it’s scuba diving. The best time to do this is between May and September. The reasons for this are that during this time water visibility is best, so you get the best views possible of the vibrant and colourful coral reefs.

Tips for First-Time Visitors to Hurghada

If you’re planning your first visit to Hurghada , there are a few things you should keep in mind to make the most of your experience. Here are our top tips – we hope they are useful:

  • Pack wisely: Hurghada is known for being hot and sunny, so bear this in mind when you’re packing. Lightweight and breathable clothing to stay cool is the best option here, but if you’re visiting between November and March, bear in mind the evenings can get a little cooler, so bring layers. If you plan to travel inland or visit any desert areas, bring some long sleeves and trousers. And most importantly – don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat!
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during the summer months when temperatures can soar. Most hotels and resorts offer bottled water, but it’s also a good idea for the environment to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up throughout the day. However, be careful doing this as the water in Hurghada is absolutely not good to drink. So make sure it’s being filled up from a filtered source.
  • Be respectful: As with anywhere in the world, it’s your duty as the visitor to fit in with local rules, regulations, customs and culture. Egypt is a Muslim country, so it’s important to be respectful of this. Mainly, this means dressing modestly when visiting mosques or other religious sites, and avoid public displays of affection.
  • Exchange currency: Even in today’s cashless society, it’s a good idea to exchange some currency before you arrive in Hurghada, as not all businesses – particularly in the souks (markets) accept credit cards. You can withdraw Egyptian pounds from ATMs, but avoid the hassle as many of them charge a fee.
  • Haggle wisely: Bargaining is a common practice in Hurghada, especially when shopping in markets and bazaars. However, it’s really important to be respectful when haggling and don’t go too low with your offers. Also, it’s meant to be a good natured exchange, so don’t become rude or difficult just because you’re not getting your own way. A good rule of thumb is to start with a price that is half of the vendor’s initial offer, and work your way up from there. But most importantly, remember to smile when you’re doing it!
  • Book excursions through recognised operators: There are many places to book a tour or excursion in Hurghada – some better than others. We’d recommend only using GetYourGuide.com – and look out for their ‘certified’ badge for the very best tours on offer. Booking ahead doesn’t only ensure your safety and enjoyment, but it also guarantees availability and price.

By keeping these tips in mind ahead of your first trip to Hurghada, you’ll be better prepared to make the most out of your time here.

Where to Stay in Hurghada: Accommodation Options for First-Time Visitors

If you’re planning your first-ever trip to Hurghada , deciding on where to stay is a crucial part of your planning process. Here is a breakdown of the different accommodation options available for first-time visitors to Hurghada:

Hotel Hurghada

All-Inclusive Resorts

Hurghada is well-known for its luxurious , all-inclusive resorts. Some of the best hotels in Hurghada are right on the beach, offering stunning views of the Red Sea. Staying at an all-inclusive resort means that you’ll have easy access to everything you need, including food, drinks, and entertainment.

Budget-Friendly Hotels

Hurghada also has plenty of budget-friendly hotels that offer comfortable accommodation without breaking the bank. These hotels are usually located in the city centre, a short distance away from the beach. While they may not offer the same level of luxury as the all-inclusive resorts, budget-friendly hotels are a great option for those who want to save money while still being close to all the action.

Apartments and Villas

If you’re travelling in a group or planning an extended stay in Hurghada, renting an apartment or villa might be a good option. This allows you to have your own space, cook your own meals and enjoy the privacy and freedom of having your own accommodation. Many apartments and villas are located close to Hurghada’s beaches and come with stunning sea views.

Bed and Breakfasts

Bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) offer a more intimate and personalised experience for travellers. They are usually small, family-run establishments that offer comfortable rooms with breakfast included in the price. B&Bs are usually located away from the busy tourist areas, giving you a taste of local life in Hurghada.

Best Travel Tips for Planning a Trip to Hurghada, Egypt

Hurghada is a city of eternity and immortal magic, with a number of charms that will never wear out.

Hurghada might be the meteor that comes every once in a while to leave with a heavy load of wishes. In each of the four seasons, the city pronounces the travelers’ desires, for a classy deluxe adventure, in a delicious way and translates every letter into an animated version of entertainment and luxury, whether surrounded by the Red Sea or having a historical trip into the symbols and hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt.

In each season the city spreads different references of ethereality in the air, and hugs all tourists, making it a destination that’s worthy of putting effort into planning a trip to.

Thus, the following are pick-up-with-a-purpose-behind tips that’ll get the city to be your own version of a meteor:

  • Search about The City’s Weather Before You Go
  • Pamper Yourself with a Long Vacation to Cover All the City’s Activities
  • Have Extra Cash on You
  • Explore Different Destinations from Hurghada
  • Pick up a Phrase or Two in Arabic to Make It Less Hectic
  • Plan a Budget
  • Your Safety and Well-being Come First
  • Pick up Your Agency Wisely

travel guide to hurghada egypt

1. Search about The City’s Weather Before You Go

Hurghada has always been a city with two scales weighed down by enchantment for a reason.  Every time you explore the city, you’ll be left impressed with the perfect picture it tries to make you collect the pieces of about to what state of dazzling it can leave you caught up with during each season of the year.

It’s a place that declared the word “Singularity” as its surname. A singularity that parks the most in winter when the city greets the travelers in a rare way with its fog, rain droplets, and blows of air mixed together with the December activities you can have there. Then, in spring, the city sparkles in a wholly diverse way with the Emerald effect it activates on the world, from lush green leaves and bushes to the Ruby and Amethyst colors of roses. The spark won’t be put out even in the hot temperature of the summer.

As in summer, Hurghada managed to mold the boiling hot summer weather to what goes with the travelers’ needs from a warm, breezy atmosphere to shallow and deep marine spots, surrounded by the navy blue of the sea, and the delicious honey of the beaches’ sand. In fall, the city shut off the travelers from any distraction, focusing only on the Red Jasper and aragonite colors of the leaves and maple trees, and making their heads light up with a sense of nostalgia.

2. Pamper Yourself with a Long Vacation to Cover All the City’s Activities

No matter how many times you tried to track the two points that defines Hurghada City’s grandeur, it’ll be all in vain. The city is filled with aesthetics, if analyzed, a generous number of marine and coastal activities alongside destinations will come flooding you. Hurghada acts like a car with no engine or speed level that can stop the splendor of its marine life from spreading.

You need way more than a round or two of scuba diving or snorkeling to digest all marvels that leak out from Hurghada’s marine creatures. It’s as if the marine life and its inhabitants in Hurghada will adopt you as a new member of their family. You’ll get attached to the settings there, wanting more and more of what makes you stick to them as long as possible. From diving and swimming to snorkeling, kitesurfing, windsurfing alongside more, all are coastal activities the city offers you won’t be able to cover in a mere day or two-day trip.

3. Pack Light

Packing light is another wheel that will keep your trip plan going on the right path, and without, your trip fun might come to halt for a while, not to mention the heavy drag this can cause on your plans. Count in only your necessities, and what makes your trip spin around the right orbit, while counting out those just-in-case items that’ll make you suffer the consequences. Hence, packing light doesn’t by any chance mean cutting off your load by half, it’s just about packing light with high quality. Make sure you pack clothes that go with your visit season; a hat, a pair of sunglasses in summer, a scarf, a pair of gloves, and an umbrella for winter.

4. Have Extra Cash on You

It’s sooner or later on your trip that you’ll feel how important it’s to grab extra money before you. The extra cash has always been of large usage if being the salvation for lots of travelers is any indication. A valid reason why you should have extra cash on you turned out to be either being a fan of shopping; purchasing cultural souvenirs as living proof of your visit, or Hurghada weather was so good that you grab at any chance to have extra snorkeling trip, or that Hurghada might have so many dainty dishes and street food and you decided to have a taste of them all, or any other occasion, expected or not.

5. Explore Different Destinations from Hurghada

If Hurghada City has been known for the bliss it provides travelers with under the Red Sea waters, then indulge more in its geography to see how close it’s from ancient Egypt’s centers of civilization. At this point, Hurghada will offer you historical and cultural roller coaster adventures, apart from the marine and ocean world and its offspring. Check these affordable Huurghada Private Tours , where it’ll get you within the very core of Egypt, giving you the chance to know the first roots that were planted, grown, and harvested by the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, which is a process shown in Upper and Lower Egypt and their milestones.

Milestones such as the Giza Pyramids Complex, the Egyptian Museum, and others in Cairo, besides the Catacombs of Kom Shokafa, Pompey’s Pillar, and more in Alexandria, in Lower Egypt. And in Upper Egypt, you have the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and others in Luxor on one side, and the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, Philae Temple, and others in Aswan, on the other. Hence, these are types of adventures with high time management so that you can feed on as much as possible of ancient history and its mystery.

6. Pick up a Phrase or Two in Arabic to Make It Less Hectic

It might be taken for granted by now that getting exposed to the common language spoken in your target destination will give you a trip worthy of treasuring. Looking up a phrase or two in Arabic, the local language of Egyptians in Hurghada, and memorizing them as the back of your hand will take your traveling experience to another level. Now, the following are frequently used Arabic phrases in everyday life:

As-alam Alaikum: Peace Be Upon You السلام عليكم

Shukran: Thank you ﺷﻜﺮﺍﹰ

Sabah al-khair: Good Morning صباح الخير

Lazeeza: Delicious لذيذ

Jameela: Beautiful جميل

Inshaa Allah: God willing إن شاء الله‎

Yalla: Let’s Go يللا

Nonetheless, put in mind Egyptians are kind and friendly by nature, they’ll get more than understanding if you did not get the word right..

7. Plan a Budget

A trip budget, sometimes, might get double-edged. If you decided it right, it’ll get your trip to cover as many aspects of luxury as possible, not to mention the state of balance your trip will get wrapped in. However, if you did not go through what you might need and what you may not specifically, it can leave an impact on your budget, and your trip overall. First, brainstorm all essential and trivial on top of your mind regarding the trip.

Next, you should sort your needs and stick to them, all the while deterring what might block you from having fun during the trip. Many things you need to set up your budget according to, and accommodation is one of them. Opt for decent reasonable accommodation yet, comfy and as close as it can get to luxury so that it’ll not make that big difference in your budget. Another thing is the flights. Planning for a trip, it must not slip your mind the possibility of booking earlier.

Pick Summer or Fall, when it’s less jammed and more laidback in Hurghada but graceful nonetheless. And let us not forget your personal expenses, the tipping, and more that you should prepare your budget for.

8. Your Safety and Well-being Come First

During the trip, try to activate the filter mood more often than not. You need to filter and clear your head from any mess that planning for the different aspects of a trip can cause, and dedicate enough time to thinking about how you can maintain your safety and well-being. During a trip, safety is quite a wide dictionary that you need to cover and fulfill every line of, from checking up your traveling documents and making a copy of them so that you get through the airport check-up safety. To take pictures of your luggage at the airport just in case they got mistaken for others.

As well as a permanent medical checkup from the very first moment until the very end of your trip. All will avoid any stress to take a toll on you and your well-being, making you all relaxed and chilled out to launch your trip.

9. Pick up Your Agency Wisely

Choose the agency that opens your eyes and leads you into the true epiphany of Hurghada; that’s the raw majesty. Shooting at an unqualified agency might cost you a lot of effort and extra money, making you deal with dilemmas you did not count in your vacation plan. Not to mention the waste of time that might affect your trip, making you miss exploring even a fraction of the city’s majesty.

As a result, and to avoid your trip from taking an unexcepted turn, do as much research as possible, looking up as many reviews about your agency as you can to find the one. Among the things that tell a lot about the agency, is its authenticity; being legally registered. Then comes the mostly-approving reviews of the travelers, and amenities it presents, and offered deals.

I highly recommend checking out and booking your tour to Hurghada or from Hurghada with " Hurghada Excursions "  which is a local Egypt travel agency located in Hurghada Egypt, the company aims to provide a high level of quality services of day tours, excursions, Nile cruises, and tour packages in Hurghada or from Hurghada to any other city in Egypt. The company succeeded to turn the travelers’ desires and needs into a cloud of stardust. It’s famous for providing timeless charm in its Hurghada excursions, Hurghada day trips, and Hurghada holidays.

It efficiently managed to step on the ladder of reliability and authenticity, climbing to the top, with the many reviews on the site, that all are in love with the different range of trips, from coastal, between the friendly creatures on Earth, to the cultural, with the company of the most intimidating humans once lived. Each trip comes with fabulous services from accommodation to flight, and more at insanely affordable prices.

And once you're in Hurghada, keep exploring. Take a look at this Luxor day trip from Hurghada for inspiration.

Hurghada Egypt Travel Guide

Hurghada Egypt Travel Guide

Egypt is without a doubt one of the greatest nations to visit in Africa, with the Great Pyramids of Giza , the complex tombs of the Valley of the Kings in Luxor , and the flowing Nile River. Many people are unaware, however, that Egypt also has magnificent beaches and world-class scuba diving in the Red Sea where you can spend your fantastic Holidays in Hurghada Egypt and other cities like Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab and Marsa Alam .

Hurghada Egypt, located on the Red Sea’s shores, is the perfect tourist destination. The warm sea, beautiful coral, and crystal clear water are ideal for diving and snorkeling. A quad ride over the vast desert that surrounds Hurghada or a spin at Egypt’s largest wakeboard cable park will appeal to thrill enthusiasts.

Hurghada Egypt resorts are ideal for anybody looking for a peaceful, sunny holiday spent lounging by the fresh breeze at the pool

Packing for Hurghada

Packing for bright skies, poolside relaxing, and outdoor adventures is a must. While the majority of Egypt is conservative, with women obliged to cover their knees and shoulders, this is not the case in tourist destinations. While on Hurghada Holidays, you won’t have to worry about covering yourself. Don’t forget to bring the following items:

For days spent relaxing by the pool, bring sunscreen, a cover-up, a swimsuit, and a brimmed hat.

Remember to bring your scuba diving equipment since diving in the Red Sea is world-class or you can buy there whatever you want if you don’t want to carry that heavy equipment. If you’re not a huge diver, you might only want to carry snorkeling equipment.

Tennis shoes and gym clothes for the gym could be a part of your luggage. Evenings spent dining in your Hurghada resort restaurants or enjoying the nighttime entertainment should be dressed in slacks, dresses, and button-up shirts.

How to get to Hurghada Egypt

Hurghada Egypt is a Red Sea tourist town in the East of Egypt . International and domestic flights are available from Hurghada’s airport on a regular basis. You may take a daily bus from Luxor or hire a private standard-sized vehicle for around 150$ or pay 250$ for a van that can seat three or more persons. To transport tourists to and from Hurghada, drivers must get permission, therefore give your chauffeur at least 24 hours’ heads up.

In and Around Hurghada

Even if you never depart your resort, you’ll have a fantastic time at Hurghada. However, if you’re searching for something to do in Hurghada Egypt, here are just a few suggestions:

Diving in Hurghada Red Sea

Did you also know that Egypt is one of the greatest scuba diving destinations worldwide? The Red Sea is known for its vibrant coral and sparkling water. There are hundreds of liveaboard dive boats in Egypt, as well as world-class diving sites close off the shore of Hurghada Egypt. It’s also an excellent location for those seeking PADI certification.

You could go snorkeling in the afternoon and do a novice dive in the morning. Also scuba dive in water that happened to be warm enough to swim in even in December! You will see lionfish, spotted rays, barracuda, and a variety of other unusual aquatic animals. Even observations of great white sharks in the Red Sea have been reported!

Desert Trips in Hurghada Egypt

Your Holidays in Hurghada won’t be completed without a Desert day trip. There are various options for exploring the huge desert from outside Hurghada; Dependent on whether you choose to cruise in a jeep with a professional driver or ride your own quad bike. Trips are available in the mornings or evenings, and often involve visits to nearby Bedouin settlements, sunset viewing, and stargazing.

Take a day excursion to Luxor — it takes around 3-4 hours to drive from Hurghada to Luxor. We recommend staying in Luxor for at least three days because there are so many amazing monuments to see. If you’re short on time, though, you may take a day trip to visit the highlights. You will have the most freedom if you hire a private car and driver, although there are numerous alternatives for groups excursions.

Sliders Cable Park is one of the world’s largest cable parks, located in El Gouna; The place is approximately 25 mins away north of Hurghada Egypt. If you like wakeboarding, this is a must-do, and they also offer courses and intro packages for people who are new to the sport.

Hurghada Souk is a retail center with over 145 shops and outlets, is a must-see.

Play a round of golf — If golfing is your favorite sport; Madinat Makadi offers a superb 18-hole golf course in a stunning setting only a few miles from Hurghada Egypt center!

To be able to actually see the places and artifacts that I had read about and studied was truly phenomenal. Our hotels were great, the travel to and from sites was completely taken care of, we never felt unsafe or left to our own devices, and the itinerary was just right. But what made the experience so fab was our two guides - Mahmoud Nour in Luxor/Aswan/Abu Simbel and "Max" in Cairo/Memphis/Saqqara. They taught us history and context as it related to each site we visited and they indulged my myriad questions. They were both so incredibly knowledgeable and my questions were never ignored or unanswered. In addition, they shared their culture with us and treated us to some awesome dining experiences. The history of the city.

The investors launched their tourism projects in the region by constructing resorts and hotels; now, Hurghada has over 350 hotels and resorts, as well as a large number of travel agencies, transportation agents, diving schools, diving centers, and safari agents, among others.

Information about Getting Around the City

Hurghada is about 6 hours by car from Cairo and around 4.5 hours by car from Luxor, respectively. It is the most populous city on the Red Sea coast. Hurghada International Airport makes it simple to travel to and from the city from anywhere in the world and from any Egyptian city. There are numerous options for travel from/to Hurghada from other Egyptian cities, including flights with EgyptAir, ferry boats that sail between Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, and transportation companies in Hurghada that depart for Cairo , Luxor , Marsa Alam , Alexandria , and other cities, all of which make the city accessible from anywhere in the world.

The city of Hurghada is split into three sections: the El Dahar district, which is the oldest part of the city and has the oldest market and bazaars in Hurghada, as well as the largest mosque in the city and a church.

There is a second neighborhood known as El Sakala, which has a large number of Bazaars, Cafes, discus, and Hurghada Marina, as well as the Hurghada port from where ferry boats depart for Sharm El Sheikh and Saudi Arabia.

The most recent development is the Touristic Road, which runs in front of the hotels and is lined with several Bazaars, cafés, and boutiques throughout its length.

El Gouna is a resort town in Egypt.

El Gouna is a new city located 25 kilometers north of Hurghada. It features around 18 hotels and several private villas, as well as a private airstrip and marina. El Gouna offers a wide range of water sports activities, including scuba diving, windsurfing, kite surfing, waterskiing, parasailing, and snorkeling, among others. Downtown, Tamr Henna Square, and the Abu Tig Marina are the three major locations in El Gouna that include stores, bars, and restaurants. The remainder of the city is divided into smaller neighborhoods.

The islands of Giftun and Mahmya are located in the Gulf of Aden.

Giftun and Mahmya Islands are the primary diving and snorkeling destinations in Hurghada, and everyday boats transport diving groups there. Hurghada has several islands that are distant from its shore, but there are two large islands that are well-known and to which you may take excursions. In addition to its stunning sandy reef, the island is home to an abundance of corals as well as rare and unusual aquatic species. Giftun Island is included in the agenda of these snorkeling excursions, which includes an hour of relaxation time.

Where to Go: While on vacation in Hurghada, there are numerous places you can visit to learn about the history of the pharaohs. There are daily flights to and from Cairo , where you can plan a trip to see the Great Giza Pyramids , the ancient capital of Egypt, the Memphis area, Sakkara and the first pyramid ( Step pyramid ), Dahshur, the Egyptian Museum , Islamic and Coptic sites in Cairo, the Salah El-Din Citadel , Mohammed Ali alabaster, and You may also drive to Cairo by automobile, which takes around 6 hours one-way on the highway.

Because Hurghada is located on the opposite side of the Nile valley from Qena and Luxor , the journey between the two cities is straightforward. Daily excursions to Luxor depart from Hurghada at 05:00 a.m. and include visits to the sites on the west bank, including the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Habu Temple, and Hatshepsut temple, as well as the sites on the east bank, including Karnak temple, Luxor temple, Luxor

It is preferable to take a ferry boat or a flight from Hurghada to Sharm El Sheikh , St. Catherine monastery, and Moses Mountain than to go by road. The ferry boat or flight is more convenient since it is closer than using the road.

Some tour companies in Hurghada are offering charter excursions to Petra in Jordan as an innovative approach to include additional destinations into the vacation itinerary while in the Egyptian resort.

What To Do in Hurghada:

Hurghada offers a wide range of activities that can be done in the sea or in the desert, with its spectacular coral reefs, snorkeling and diving are two of the most popular activities in Hurghada. During these excursions, they stop at Giftun Island, which is part of the Hurghada National Park. Other water activities including windsurfing, kitesurfing, and waterskiing are also available in Hurghada.

General Information About Hurghada

Hurghada , has incredible coral reefs and dozens of attractions in a relaxed and quiet atmosphere. Although this destination is known as one of the top three destinations for diving in the world, it has something for everyone, even for those who do not practice diving: beach fun, extreme water sports, clubs and golf are just some of the options from which to choose.

The water in Hurghada  is very clear and the variety of marine fauna and flora is exceptionally rich, so dive sites in this area are perfect for underwater photography.

Hurghada has a wide range of beautiful hotels, where guests can enjoy spa facilities, massages and beautiful beaches, windsurfing, underwater fishing.

Hurghada is a luxury resort city divided into three areas: Sigala, El-Dahar and El-Memsha. In Sigala you will find many resorts on the beach, mid-range hotels and many restaurants. South of Sigala, you’ll find luxury resorts. El-Dahar is the oldest part of the city. The Memsha, which means village road, is the modern part of the city. There are many luxury destinations nearby, including the bays of Soma and Makadi and Sahl Hasheesh.

Hurghada Culture and History

Communication with the older people, could be little bit difficult as they mostly speak their native language. The younger people speak English language.

Although Egypt is an Islamic state where alcohol is forbidden, you can consume alcoholic beverages in most major hotels and bars in Hurghada.

Hurghada was founded in the early 20th century. It grew from a humble fishing village of a few hundred inhabitants into a booming city. Soon this place became a gold mine. The tourists kept coming, and residents became excellent hosts. Hurghada  acquired its name from a plant which has grown naturally since ancient times.

The sun in Hurgada is very strong, so make sure you are protected from the hot African sun. Drink enough water to be protected from the sun stroke and dehydration.

Hurghada Nightlife

Hurghada is a town famous for its nightlife. Located between two port cities, Hurghada gets plenty of visitors wanting to have fun. There are many ways to spend an afternoon when you’re in Hurghada.

Absolutely loved it, the service was seamless from the first pickup from the airport to the return drop-off. The local guides were excellent, knowledgeable...

Down the coast from Hurghada, the stream of holiday resorts becomes less dense until three belated spurts of development on the outskirts of Port Safaga (58km), El-Quseir (a further 85km) and Marsa Alam (a further 132km). Little more than an overgrown, grubby port, Safaga has few charms, though it is within boat range of some stunning offshore reefs, while El-Quseir retains a sleepy quality unlike anywhere else on the Red Sea. The region around Marsa Alam is home to several isolated diving camps and resorts, as well as the Port Ghalib tourist development, of which construction is ongoing.

Eco-tourism or greenwashing?

Port safaga, diving and snorkelling in safaga, south of marsa alam.

Further south, communications become tenuous and bureaucratic obstacles loom as you head towards the Sudanese border. From Bir Shalateen , you need military permission to proceed further south, or into the mountains. The principal attraction of the far south is its reefs, which can be reached on dive boats operating out of Hurghada, Safaga, El-Quseir and Marsa Alam.

An introduction to Egypt

Marvel at the pyramids in Giza, explore busy Cairo, sleep on a luxurious sleeper train and explore more temples close to Luxor. This itinerary is fast-paced, with several nights in Cairo at the beginning and end, enabling you to see many fascinating sights in Egypt.

The Red Sea Coast’s booming tourism industry has prospered at serious cost to the environment . Rampant development, over-fishing, pollution, the degradation of coral reefs and increased pressure on water supplies are just a few of the problems. As the Hurghada Protection and Conservation Association warns: “Environmental deterioration is no longer a threat but a reality. Each day in the Red Sea we are witness to the depletion of the very resource base that attracts so many visitors here in the first place.” In recent years numerous “ eco-lodges ” have sprung up in the region. While some – such as those run by Red Sea Diving Safari – have genuine green credentials, many others are simply indulging in greenwashing. Similarly not all the dive centres and travel agencies are as conservation-minded as their promotional literature might suggest. The key thing for eco-minded travellers to do is to ask lots of questions – How is waste disposed of? What is recycled? How is power usage minimized? How does the local community benefit? What conservation efforts are being made? – before deciding who to stay and dive with.

EL-QUSEIR , 85km from Safaga, is another phosphates extraction centre, though with fewer inhabitants and more appeal. In pharaonic times, boats sailed from here to the “Land of Punt” (thought to be Yemen or Somalia), as depicted in reliefs within Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahri. The Romans knew it as Leukos Limen (“White Harbour”), while under Arab rule El-Quseir was the largest Red Sea port until the tenth century, remaining a major transit point for pilgrims until the 1840s, when Flaubert caught its last flickers of exoticism.

Today, El-Quseir is a sleepy place, mostly unaffected by tourism, despite the resorts on its outskirts. Life moves pretty slowly, except on Fridays, when Ma’aza and Ababda Bedouin flock in for the weekly market . The best dive sites nearby are the Brothers, east of El-Quseir, and the Elphinstone and Abu Dabbab reefs, down towards Marsa Alam, although the Quei and Wizr reefs are closer. All the resorts have their own dive centres although they may not allow outside divers to join their trips; it’s best to book a dive package deal from the outset.

The fortress

Smack in the town centre, just past the main traffic roundabout, sits El-Quseir’s most impressive landmark, the sixteenth-century crumbling walled fortress , which now houses a museum. Designed to protect trade routes used by the Ottomans, the fortress declined after trade was diverted around the Cape of Good Hope. Napoleon’s army raised the French flag here in 1799, only to attract the attention of British warships sailing off the coast. The French survived a brief assault, but abandoned the fort two years later. Its most recent occupant was the Egyptian army, stationed here until 1975. The cistern, watchtower (climb up for excellent views) and rooms built into the walls of the fortress each contain small exhibits on the history and traditions of the Red Sea coast.

The rest of the town

In addition to the fortress, El-Quseir has a few other sights that are worth a quick look, including a small harbour where you can see local boat-builders at work, and a beachside promenade , good for a stroll. A few blocks back from the waterfront, past a number of shuttered and balconied houses, are the thirteenth-century Faran Mosque and an imposing former quarantine hospital dating back to the nineteenth century.

The town of MARSA ALAM itself is undistinguished, consisting of a large army base, some government buildings and apartment blocks constructed for the expected influx of hotel staff to the area, grafted onto a fishing port where liveaboards now moor. The area around the town, however, has become a diving hub, and there are some excellent dive sites within striking distance. The best places to stay are outside Marsa Alam to the north and the south.

PORT SAFAGA (Bur Safaga in Arabic) amounts to very little. Coming in from the north, you pass a slip road curving off to a series of holiday resorts on a headland, catering mainly to divers. The town, whose economy is driven by the nearby phosphate mines, begins 3km later and consists of a single windswept avenue running straight on past concrete boxes with bold signs proclaiming their function, until the bus station and a final mosque, 4km south. Silos and cranes identify the port, which runs alongside (but remains out of bounds) for most of this distance. Safaga’s only attractions are the reefs to the north, and there’s not much reason to hang around otherwise.

Boats and instructors at the main dive centres tend to be committed to groups, though they will take on independent travellers if they have space: expect to pay around €300 for a PADI Open Water course or around €50 for two boat dives. As in Hurghada, an environmental fee of €3 a day is levied on all divers and snorkellers. The main diving grounds lie 6–8km offshore from the holiday resorts between Safaga Island and the Ras Abu Soma headland to the north. Tubiya Island is ringed with corals just off its beach, while dive boats drop their clients directly over the sunken North and South Fairway Reefs or the twin pairs of sites known as Tubiya Kebir , Tubiya Soraya , Gamul Soraya and Gamul Kebir . Other sites include the Seven Pillars off Ras Abu Soma, and the Panorama Reef and Shark Point , 10km east of Safaga Island. Most of them are notable for their coral pillars and strong currents. Note that among the big fish prevalent in these waters are aggressive hammerhead sharks .

For keen divers who have made it this far, there are several camps and hotels to the south of town offering the opportunity to explore the most remote dive sites in the southern Red Sea – and to experience an eerily empty and barren region of mountains, ocean and reef far removed from the commercialized northern Red Sea coast.

One of the most popular of these dive sites is the Dolphin House Reef (also known as Samadai Reef), a crescent-shaped protected area set up in 2001 to protect the area’s spinner dolphins. Tourist numbers to the reef have been capped at two hundred per day – previously there were up to 2,500 – and it’s now a great spot for snorkelling as well as diving. Other notable dive sites include Elphinstone , a 300-metre-long reef ideal for drift diving; Abu Dabab , a series of sheltered reefs; Fury Shoals , a set of reefs rich in marine life; and St John’s , a site with caves, black coral and – if you’re lucky – sharks.

Wadi Gimal National Park

A unique protected area covering 6000 square kilometres of land and 4000 square kilometres of sea, Wadi Gimal National Park is home to an interesting mix of archeological sites and wildlife. The area once lay on an important trading route, and there are several pharaonic and Roman ruins to explore, including the village of Geli and an old emerald mine. Wild gazelle can also be seen, while in spring and the autumn you may be able to spot migrant birds such as osprey, falcons, white-eyed gulls and the occasional flamingo. Red Sea Desert Adventures ( w redseadesertadventures.com ) and the Shams Alam Beach Resort can organize dives, excursions and overnight camping in the park.
