Ancient plant artefact reveals humanity's epic journey to Australia

We know that modern humans took one of two routes to first reach Australia, and now an ancient chunk of plant resin has tipped the evidence towards the northern option

Excavations at Mololo cave on the island of Waigeo, where ancient plant resin was found

Tristan Russell (The Raja Ampat Archaeological Project)

A tiny chunk of plant resin shows humans were living on an island in eastern Indonesia at least 55,000 years ago ā€“ revealing the likely route that modern humans took when migrating to Australia.

We know that modern humans journeyed to Australia by heading south-east from mainland Asia, travelling through what is now Indonesia and many other islands of South-East Asia. The exact timing is contested, says Dylan Gaffney at the University of Oxford. Modern genetic evidence suggests humans arrived less than 50,000 years ago, but archaeological evidence points to an earlier arrival, ā€œperhaps 65,000 or even 80,000 years agoā€, he says.

Who were the enigmatic Sea Peoples blamed for the Bronze Age collapse?

What is more, the exact route they took is also contested because the geography of the region at the time was different. Earth was in a cold glacial period, so more water was locked up in ice sheets and sea levels were lower , meaning some landmasses that are now islands were connected to continents. In the western part of this region, Borneo, Sumatra and Java were all part of mainland Asia ā€“ while in the eastern part, New Guinea was joined to Australia.

This means there were two possible routes humans could have taken to reach Australia . The northern route heads directly east from Borneo to Sulawesi and on to New Guinea, then south into Australia. The southern route goes via Java, passing through Bali and Timor to northern Australia .

Possible routes to Australia

To help find out how people made the journey, Gaffney and his colleagues excavated Mololo cave on the island of Waigeo, one of the Raja Ampat islands just west of New Guinea and along the northern route. In the sediments on the cave floor, the team found evidence of human occupation such as charcoal and a few stone flakes.

Crucially, Gaffneyā€™s team found a piece of resin just 1.4 centimetres across. It has an angular shape, suggesting it was cut from a tree rather than pooling naturally. Radiocarbon dating indicates it is at least 55,000 years old.

The resin was probably used as fuel for fires, says Gaffney. ā€œIt is very flammable and is a good light source in caves.ā€ But there are other possibilities, such as fragrance or adhesive. Whatever its use, it shows that humans were on Waigeo at least 55,000 years ago. ā€œWe are demonstrating that people used the northern route,ā€ says Gaffney.

Modern tree resin can help make fire and ancient resin may have been used in the same way

The finding adds to the evidence that people first reached Australia via the northern route, says Kasih Norman at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. Geographical models always pointed to the northern route because the sea crossings are easier . ā€œYou have more water crossings between islands to do along the northern route, but the crossings themselves are shorter,ā€ she says. Furthermore, ā€œyou can always see to the next islandā€.

However, most archaeological excavations focused on the southern route, says Norman. Only in recent years have researchers like Gaffney begun exploring the northern option.

One key discovery, published in July, is a 50,000-year-old cave painting of a pig found on Sulawesi, along the northern route. Likewise, a study published in May found that there was no evidence of humans on Timor before 44,000 years ago . Timor lies on the southern route, suggesting this pathway was only used later.

The other humans: The emerging story of the mysterious Denisovans

A final intriguing mystery in all this concerns the absence of the Denisovans – an extinct group of humans known to have lived on mainland Asia – from Australia’s fossil record. Many populations in South-East Asia carry Denisovan DNA : this includes people from Papua New Guinea, who have DNA from two distinct Denisovan groups . That hinted, but didn’t prove, that Denisovans lived on New Guinea. Yet there is no sign of Denisovans on Australia. ā€œAs far as we’re aware,ā€ says Norman, ā€œthere’s never been anyone else [but Homo sapiens ] here.ā€

Legendary rock band cancels tour as its members battle one another in court

Journey showed up to Hersheypark Stadium and rocked the house late last month, but there was apparently a storm brewing backstage and now the folks who were on hand for that show might be some of the last to see the iconic band together.

And that is because, according to multiple reports, a legal battle between band members has prompted the group to call off its upcoming tour in the United Kingdom.

So, whatā€™s going on?

Well, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and lead guitarist Neal Schon have not been on the best of terms for years now, and now they are reportedly embroiled in a legal battle regarding the company that oversees their tour-related finances.

Cain and Schon reportedly each hold a 50% stake in that company, Freedom 2020. KRQE Albuquerque reported the pair ā€œfundamentally disagreeā€ about the operation and management of that company, and Cain has asked a judge to resolve the situation.

iHeart Radio reported that Cain claims that Schon ā€œmaxed out the bandā€™s American Express credit card, which has a $1 million limit.ā€ The site said the band informed fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland they were cancelling dates there ā€œdue to circumstances beyond the bandā€™s control,ā€ shortly after Cain sued Schon over the company.

The site also said that the band is slated to finish out the North American leg of its tour alongside Def Leppard with a show slated for Aug. 12 in Arlington as well as at least nine more dates before the European leg was slated to begin in October.

Those might be a bit awkward.

Sabrina Carpenter Just Admitted That She Doesnā€™t Like One Of Her Most Iconic Lyrics After She Spotted A Completely Accidental Mistake That Fans Thought Was Intentional This Whole Time

ā€œI didnā€™t catch it until way after the fact,ā€ Sabrina said of her lyrical error. ā€œNow Iā€™m bringing it to your attention, so I shouldnā€™t have done that.ā€

Stephanie Soteriou

BuzzFeed Staff

When Sabrina Carpenter kicked off her Emails I Canā€™t Send tour in 2022, she shined a spotlight on one track in particular: ā€œNonsense.ā€

Sabrina Carpenter on a red carpet wearing a halter-neck dress with colorful floral sequins and a black headband, posing at the MTV VMAs

At every show, the star ad-libbed a new outro for the song, with each one customized to the city or state she was performing in.Ā

While the tour ended in 2023, Sabrina has continued this tradition during other performances, including her festival appearances and while opening for Taylor Swift ā€™s Eras Tour shows.Ā

The singer has become particularly renowned for the seriously NSFW lyrics that she cleverly incorporates into the outros, and fans waiting to see what she has come up with has quickly become a highlight at each show.

As a result, itā€™s fair to say that ā€œNonsenseā€ is one of Sabrinaā€™s most iconic songs to date. However, she recently admitted that she has only just noticed an error in her lyrics that seriously bothers her.

Sabrina Carpenter performs on stage in a stylish, intricate outfit while holding a microphone. Backup dancers are visible in the background

In fact, Sabrina said that it took her two years to notice the jarring mistake, which fans had thought was completely intentional this entire time.

Dissecting ā€œNonsenseā€ in a new TikTok video with Variety, Sabrina read out the songā€™s tongue-in-cheek closing lyrics: ā€œWoke up this morning, thought I'd write a pop hit / How quickly can you take your clothes off pop quiz?ā€

ā€œYou know what I realized in hindsight two years later that I donā€™t like about this lyric?ā€ she then asked. ā€œI say ā€˜popā€™ twice. Not my favorite. I didnā€™t catch it until way after the fact, I was like: ā€˜Ugh!ā€™ā€

Sabrina Carpenter sitting on a chair, wearing a light dress with a heart-shaped cutout, and holding a microphone

ā€œBut, yā€™know, no one has really commented on it,ā€ Sabrina added. ā€œNow Iā€™m bringing it to your attention, so I shouldnā€™t have done that.ā€

A couple of fans commented on the TikTok to admit that they, too, dislike this repetition, with one person writing: ā€œYeah the repeat has always made me mad.ā€

ā€œIt's always bothered me that she says pop twice!ā€ somebody else echoed.

However, the overwhelming consensus from Sabrinaā€™s fans was that they thought that the repetition was the whole point of the lyrics as they expressed their disbelief that she hadnā€™t picked up on it sooner.

Sabrina Carpenter poses in an orange halter dress against a neutral backdrop

ā€œhow did she not notice thatā€¦ā€ one person asked, while somebody else wrote: ā€œPop hit/pop quiz sounds very intentional šŸ˜šŸ˜ā€

ā€œI thought the double pop was intentional and part of the word play,ā€ another user agreed. One more echoed: ā€œi thought she said pop twice on purpose šŸ˜ā€

ā€œI thought it was intentional!ā€ somebody else wrote.

Others went so far as to say that they actively enjoy Sabrinaā€™s repetition, with one fan commenting: ā€œive always loved the fact that she uses pop twice in different meanings šŸ„¹šŸ„¹ā€

ā€œI like that she says pop twice I thought that was the point šŸ˜‚ā€ another added. Somebody else insisted: ā€œItā€™s cute that she says pop twice, itā€™s a homophone.ā€

While one more concluded: ā€œI think it saying pop twice is fun. POP hit, POP quiz. Using the same word but with different meaning is fun and campy.ā€

Since "Nonsense," Sabrina's quirky lyrics have become a pretty established part of her brand, and are particularly showcased in her summer hit ā€œEspresso,ā€ which repeats: ā€œThatā€™s that me, espresso.ā€

Sabrina Carpenter at an event in a sleeveless, black textured dress, posing in front of a red and yellow backdrop

Speaking during an appearance on Hot Ones last month, the star acknowledged that the grammatically-incorrect line doesnā€™t work for everybody.

ā€œI heard a lot of people that were like: ā€˜She should have said thatā€™s that blonde espresso, duh,ā€™ā€ she explained. ā€œā€˜Me espressoā€™ just felt like the right thing to say, and it rhymes with the line before it.ā€

And during an interview with Apple Music, Sabrina added that she likes the fact that her sense of humor comes through in the lyrics to ā€œEspresso.ā€

ā€œThere was something really exciting about the fact that there was so much personality throughout the entire song, because those are ones that are really, really fun to sing live with a crowd,ā€ she said.

Sabrina continued: ā€œThose are the ones that people, I think when they donā€™t know my music or who I am or anything, they can just tune into a single song and kind of leave with a better idea of my sense of humor.ā€

It Has Been a Unique Journey to the SEC for Branden Jennings

Jacob bain | 19 hours ago.

Braden Jennings

STARKVILLE, Miss. ā€” Change has been a buzzword regarding Mississippi State football the entire offseason. Rightfully so, as the Bulldogs welcome a new head coach, Jeff Lebby, and a new defensive coordinator, Coleman Hutzler.

However, change has also trickled down to the players, as many projected starters are from the transfer portal. Linebacker Branden Jennings has experienced many opportunities during his three years in college football.

The Jacksonville, Fla. native started his career in the Big 10 at Maryland, where he drew three starts as a true freshman. Jennings racked up 23 total tackles, a tackle for loss, and forced a fumble.

The 6-3 240-pounder then moved back to his home state and transferred to UCF, where he played only four games and earned a redshirt. Jennings then took the junior college route for his sophomore season, which some see as a indictment on a players talent but he never questioned it.

"I feel like it has never left (talent); if anyone has the most faith in my abilities, it is me," Jennings said. "I feel like that's what I will display this season and pick up where I left off."

Jennings transferred to Hinds Community College and the Magnolia State, which is notorious for elite football in the JUCO ranks. State took full advantage of the in-state crop last year as they signed six local junior college products: Marcus Ross (linebacker), Tyler Woodard (safety), Brylan Lanier (safety), Ashun Sheppard (defensive line), Johnnie Daniels (running back), and Jennings.

Having played against all of those guys a season ago, Jennings knows the talent of that group.

"I have played against a lot of them, so I know they can play and will make an impact," Jennings said.

The junior made an instant impact for the Eagles in his lone season, leading the team with 58 tackles and six and a half for loss. He was also named first-team All-Conference.

Despite the numerous stops throughout his college career, Jennings has always tried to maintain the same mindset.

"I just attack every day and keep the same mindset," Jennings said. "Effort and physicality is what is going through my mind every time I hit the field."

Jennings originally committed to former Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett but stuck with his pledge once the Bulldogs moved in a new direction. Lebby has brought a lot of new stuff to the table in his short time at State, one of which was Jarwarski Beckum, who is now the director of speed.

Lebby and his entire strength and conditioning staff have heavily emphasized speed, and Jennings has benefited from this.

"I feel like it has helped me a lot with my burst," Jennings said. "We have to hit a certain speed at least once a week."

That jump in his burst has helped on the field, as Jennings has been a player who has caught the attention of his coaches and teammates. There is also a position change as he has transitioned from a middle linebacker to an outside or "Jack" linebacker.

The competition for that starting spot is fierce, with All-SEC freshman Donterry Russell getting reps and Bulldog veteran Ty Cooper working there. However, the competition has been welcomed.

"They are moving us around a lot at the Jack (outside) linebacker position from inside the box to on the edge," Jennings said. "It is nothing but motivation. I love competition and feel like those guys are trying to get better every day, and it is helping me."

Like most of his teammates, Jennings's confidence is noticeable. Last Sunday, the Bulldogs went through their first fall scrimmage inside Davis Wade Stadium, and Jennings admittedly played well and earned some praise from his new head coach.

"He (Jennings) is a guy that has improved every single day," Lebby said. "He is settling in and understands our expectations and defenseā€¦ I am excited for Branden."

Jennings's path to the Southeastern Conference has been far from normal, but despite the setbacks, he is back at the highest level of college football. A positive attitude and a love for the game have always kept Jennings heading in the right direction.

"Nobody loves football more than me," Jennings said. "It does not matter if we are having a good or bad day. I will be ready to practice the next day."

New video proves Jordan Chiles inquiry was submitted in time, USA Gymnastics says

Portrait of Tom Schad

PARIS ā€” There's been another major twist in the Olympic gymnastics drama involving Jordan Chiles' bronze medal .

USA Gymnastics said Sunday that it has obtained new video evidence showing that Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, submitted the inquiry into her score in the women's floor exercise final before the one-minute deadline āˆ’ 47 seconds after her score was announced, to be exact.

The governing body said in a statement that it has submitted the video, as well as a formal letter, to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as part of a request to reinstate Chiles' score of 13.766 and allow her to keep her bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics .

"The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted," USA Gymnastics said in its statement.

"The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunalā€™s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it."

2024 Paris Olympics: Follow USA TODAYā€™s coverage of the biggest names and stories of the Games.

A spokesperson for USA Gymnastics said that, due to confidentiality rules regarding CAS appeals, it could not provide additional information about the video, including its source.

Keeping up with the news is hard. USA TODAY's Checking the Facts newsletter makes it easy. Sign up .

A CAS spokesperson did not immediately reply to a message seeking comment. And the International Olympic Committee did not immediately reply to an email asking if the existence of such video would alter its decision to strip Chiles' medal, regardless of whether CAS reconsiders its ruling.

The new video marks the latest twist in the saga stemming from the women's floor exercise final at Bercy Arena earlier this week, where Chiles leapfrogged Ana Barbosu of Romania at the very end of the competition following an appeal over her score.

Chiles originally received a score of 13.666 before her coaches submitted an inquiry with the judging panel, arguing that she should not have received a one-tenth deduction to her difficulty score for her tour jete full, which is a split leap. The judges agreed and elevated Chiles' score to 13.766, which gave her Olympic bronze and left Barbosu āˆ’ whose score was 13.700 āˆ’ in shock.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation later filed an appeal with CAS, claiming that Landi submitted the inquiry into Chiles score precisely four seconds past the one minute that is allotted for such inquiries. CAS agreed and cited that fact as the basis for its ruling Saturday, which knocked her score back down to 13.666.

The CAS decision triggered a series of procedural dominoes that eventually prompted the IOC to announce that it was stripping Chiles' bronze and giving it to Barbosu.

The issue, then, simply comes down to the timeline āˆ’ a difference of 17 seconds that could decide whether Chiles will get to keep her first individual Olympic medal.

The CAS ruling did not specify how the Romanian Gymnastics Federation determined that the inquiry had been four seconds late, and the federation itself did not immediately reply to a request for comment Sunday.

According to the technical regulations for competition that are enforced by the International Gymnastics Federation , a gymnast's coach can submit an inquiry about a score at any point until the next gymnast starts their routine. But with the last athlete of a group or rotation, as Chiles was in Monday's floor final, the rule is different and the coach only has one minute "after the score is shown on the scoreboard."

"The person designated to receive the verbal inquiry has to record the time of receiving it, either in writing or electronically, and this starts the procedure," the FIG's technical regulations state.

The Bachelorette season 21 welcomed 25 new contestants to compete for the heart of Jenn Tran. That number, however, is already dwindling.

Tran, 26, was announced as the star of the hit ABC dating series in March following her elimination from the latest season of The Bachelor. She makes history as the first-ever Asian American to front the show .

ā€œIā€™m looking for someone who has a really big personality,ā€ Tran told host Jesse Palmer at the time. ā€œI want someone who has that kind of banter. Iā€™m all about having fun... and I want someone whoā€™s going to be able to take it as much as they can dish it. And if we just spend the whole night literally making fun of each other that will be the most ideal night ever.ā€

Speaking with Glamour last week, ahead of her premiere, Tran spoke out about the ā€œunfortunateā€ lack of Asian men in her season. Only one man, Thomas N, is Asian American.

ā€œI canā€™t really speak to the casting process and the decisions that were made, but it is unfortunate that there werenā€™t a lot of Asian men this season,ā€ she said. ā€œI am hoping that me being here and Thomas N being there, that the both of us can inspire other Asian men to realize that they can do this too if they want. They can be in this position as well. Iā€™m hoping that it inspires them.ā€

Find the list of men who Jenn has sent home below . This article will be updated weekly.
