St James’ Park

St James' Park

Club: Newcastle United FC | Opening: 1880 | Capacity: 52,339 seats

History and description

St James’ Park was first used for football in 1880, but was initially nothing more than a bare pitch.

By the late 1890s, one small stand had been built, but it was the promotion of Newcastle to the First Division in 1898 that prompted the club to properly develop the ground. New terraces were built, which brought capacity to 30,000.

It then only took five more years before another round of major reconstruction works was started. A new stand at the Barrack Road side and expanded terraces increased capacity to over 60,000.

In the 1920s, Newcastle planned for an extensive redevelopment of St James’ Park with new stands designed by architect Archibald Leitch, but conflicts between the landlord (the city of Newcastle) and planners led to abandonment of the plans.

In 1930, St James’ Park recorded its highest attendance when 68,386 people visited a match between Newcastle and Chelsea.

Further conflicts between the club and city led to more cancelled plans in the 1950s and 1960s, which also made Newcastle miss out on hosting matches during the 1966 World Cup. These were hosted by Middlesbrough’s Ayresome Park instead.

In the early 1970s, the club finally reached agreement with the Newcastle city council, and in 1972 a new Leazes Terrace Stand opened. Works were to continue with the Leazes End, but relegation and a precarious financial situation ended hopes of further improvements.

Safety requirements resulting from the Bradford fire made a replacement of the old West Stand necessary, and in 1987 a new stand, named Milburn Stand, opened.

Further improvements were needed, but funding only came available after the takeover of the club by Sir John Hall in 1992. In only a few years three new stands got built, resulting in a bowl-shaped stadium with a capacity of 37,000 seats.

In 1996, St James’ Park was a playing venue of the Euro 1996 Championships, during which it hosted three group matches.

The increasing popularity of the club made further expansion necessary, and after plans to move to a new stadium had fallen through, instead was chosen to build a second tier on top of the Milburn and Leazes Stands. Works were completed in August 2000. The stadium now has the largest cantilever roof in Europe.

In 2011, St James’ Park was temporarily renamed Sports Direct Arena (after the company of club owner Mike Ashley), but the stadium referred back to its original name after new club sponsor Wonga bought the naming right.

How to get to St James’ Park

St James’ Park is located on the edge of Newcastle’s city centre, making it easy to reach by public transport.

The stadium lies slightly towards the north-east of Newcastle’s centre and north of the main railway station, from where it is a 10-minute walk. On its northern side it borders Leazes Park.

If arriving by car, follow directions to Newcastle’s city centre. The stadium is close to most city centre car parks, but due to its location it is advised to travel by public transport.

St James’ Park is also served by metro (stop St James) if you arrive from elsewhere in the Newcastle region or Newcastle Airport .

Right, first things first, I am a Sunderland fan. A big SAFC fan. But, believe it or not, this ground is one of my favourite grounds that I did when I did the 117, but not higher than Wembley. The atmosphere was electric for the game, Manchester United won 4-0 in the game, and now I am going to mark out of 10 most general parts of the stadium. Size: 9/10 Atmosphere: 10/10 Quality: 9/10 Outside: 10/10 Owner: -10/10 (Only joking, about 7/10) Actual Team from my point of view: 2/10 Realistic: 9/10

The Sports Direct Arena is a challenge. The two big stands are very impressive and extremely spaceish, however getting up there is a nightmare and I am an athlete!!! The designers done really well to get the old smaller stand to fit and create the bowl effect. The view from the gods I honestly thought wasn’t as bad as people made out until we scored and you could not tell at all who got it??? The atmosphere in here was nuts as it was derby day and the passion in the north east is second to none in English football. This ground is good, though with Mike Ashley and his Sports Direct brand the stadium is being tarnished.

Why is Newcastle United's ground called St James’ Park?

Historically, a hospital and chapel named St. James’ stood near where the Great North Museum building now stands in Newcastle, which is in proximity to where St James’ Park now stands. The church of St James was a significant landmark in the area, and the park's name pays homage to its presence.

Newcastle United Football Club has played its home matches at St James' Park since its formation in 1892. Over the years, the stadium has undergone several renovations and expansions, but it has retained its iconic name, which is deeply ingrained in the club's history and the local community.

When was St James’ Park built?

The football stadium was originally built in 1880, making it one of the oldest football stadiums in the world. It has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, but the initial construction of the stadium took place that year.

Newcastle United – St James’ Park – Stadium Tour

A stadium tour of St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United Football Club

Newcastle United, St James’ Park Stadium Tour

The advantages of taking a Stadium Tour of Newcastle United are;

  • Located in Newcastle City Center
  • Small groups with informative local guide
  • Modern Stadium
  • A stadium and football team with significant history
  • Many famous footballers / managers have visited

I have taken stadium tours of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus , Arsenal and Liverpool .  However, the Newcastle United stadium tour is the one which gives the visitors the most attention and detail.  I arrived at the stadium without a ticket and bought one on the day but it’s possible to book your Stadium Tour online.

St James' Park, Newcastle United, location

A Stadium with a View

St James' Park, Newcastle United Stadium Tour

The first stop on the Newcastle United stadium tour is to the top of the Milburn Stand.  This is largest and most impressive stand.  It’s high up but you do get taken up in the elevators.  From the very top of the Milburn Stand you not only get a birds eye view of the pitch but a brilliant view of Newcastle city center.  There’s a map at the top of the stand pointing out the names of each building in the city.  The most prominent being the Civic Centre.  The other huge stand to the left is the Leazes Stand.  The away fans have seats allocated in the top corner of this stand, as a result they’re as far away from the pitch as possible.

Executive Boxes

Next stop are the executive boxes, these cost thousands of dollars for a season ticket and that doesn’t include the drinks!  It’s interesting to see how luxurious watching a football game can be.  It’s also interesting to learn about the strict alcohol laws in the UK.  You’re not allowed to stand at the window of the executive box with an alcoholic drink in your hand.  Having mentioned the no drinking in the open rule, many football fans will remember seeing Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley drinking pints out in the open in the stadium.  The guide stated that that are 65 bars inside the stadium.  The justification for there being so many bars is that if you’re a Newcastle United fan then you need a drink!

Media Section

St James' Park Newcastle United Stadium Tour - VIP area

This part of the stadium has seats with the best view of the pitch.  When Steve McClaren was manager he tried to organize the team from this part of the stadium.  In addition, there’s a seat in this section reserved for the late Sir Bobby Robson.  Sir Bobby is a Newcastle legend who managed big football clubs such as Barcelona as well as the England national team.  His seat is left empty to honor him, unless of course one of his family members is in the stadium and they can use it.  The guide explained on a cold rainy night when the winds blowing in from the North Sea it’s not the best place to be sat!

Away Team Dressing Rooms

St James' Park Newcastle United Stadium Tour - away dressing room

The away teams dressing room is nothing special which is how it’s supposed to be.  It’s small, there’re no lockers and it’s either too hot or too cold.  This is to give the home team an advantage.  Can you imagine Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi using this changing room?  Where would they keep all their belongings?  The changing rooms are designed to get players out of their comfort zone when visiting St James’ Park.

Home Team Dressing Rooms

St James' Park Newcastle United - Home team dressing room

If you compare the home team dressing rooms to the away teams you’ll see why the home team has an advantage.  These changing rooms are state of the art and were inspired by the changing rooms at the Emirates and Wembley.  There are lockers, refreshments, massage benches and it also looks good.  Furthermore, there’s a lot more space here too in comparison to the away changing rooms.

Players Tunnel

Newcastle United Stadium Tour - St James' Park - Players tunnel

If you’re taking the stadium tour with kids this is the part they will enjoy the most.  The tour guide will put on the same music they play on match day.  The kids are then invited to walk down the tunnel to the pitch, exactly as players do.  The adults also take the walk but the kids go first!  There is a message for the Newcastle team stating ‘Howay the lads’.  This means ‘Come on lads’ in Geordie (I think!).

It’s worth mentioning that many famous footballers have walked through this tunnel.  Players including David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.  Famous Newcastle players include Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, David Ginola, Paul Gascoigne as well as Kevin Keegan.

St James' Park Newcastle United Stadium Tour - Pitch Side

Media / Press Room

St James' Park Newcastle United - Stadium Tour - Media Room

As part of the tour you’ll see the Newcastle United Press Room.  When you see a Newcastle United press conference on TV it’ll have been filmed in this room.  The guide was keen to mention when the press room was at its fullest.  In the Champions League in 1997 Newcastle beat Barcelona 3-2 after a hat trick by Colombian Faustino Asprilla.  This was a huge story and press were queued up outside trying to get their story.

Enjoy your Newcastle United, St James’ Park Stadium Tour

The tour takes about 90 minutes and you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide the whole time.  Feel free to ask the guide as many questions as you want, they are really keen to talk about their team as well as the city of Newcastle.  If you want to take unique photos of the stadium, ask the guide for tips, they can also take your photo for you.

I took a standard Stadium Tour  but it’s also possible to take match day tours if you are also visiting to watch a match.

Enjoy your stadium tour of St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United.

If you need a place to stay in Newcastle whilst visiting the Stadium, I recommend the Staybridge Suites .  Check out the Anfield Stadium Tour , home of Liverpool FC.

What an awesome experience it must be to take a Newcastle United Stadium tour. I’d love to do the match day tour, see the stadium then see the game. I was a big fan of Alan Shearer so it would be interesting to learn more about his home team.

' src=

I’m not too much a fan of soccer but I’d not mind walking the same places as famous footballers. Especially the tunnel. I can’t but laugh out loud seeing the differences between the home team dressing room and the away team’s. It’s like a 5 star hotel vs a cheap 1 star. I can’t imagine Ronaldo here.????????????

' src=

Hands up James, I’m definitely not a football fan, but St James Park Stadium looks really interesting. I love the difference between the dressing rooms, talk about psychological mindgames. I have to say, I’d love to try and watch a match from that luxury box; I can only imagine the kind of treatment they get in there! Walking through the tunnel would be really fun too.

' src=

St. James stadium is beautiful. I think I’ve seen the home’s team locker room in the news before. I’d agree to a tour in the Stadium with a kid not kids. The latter might just be too happy exploring the big stadium, thus making me lose hold.

' src=

St. James stadium would definitely be on my list of places to check out! My husband toured the stadium in Barcelona and his photos were amazing! We like taking visitors to the Seattle Seahawks stadium.

I must admit I am not a big fan of football, but you convinced me to go to an empty stadium at least LOL! Did you get to play a little too during the tour? Love the pictures too!

' src=

Not much of a soccer fan myself, but would love to visit the stadium. Yesterday only I visited the Headingley Carnegie Stadium in Leeds, and I was literally in awe. The stadium that I had seen in my TV screens, was right there in front of my eyes. Would definitely check out the Stadium tours as well.

' src=

I’ve been to a couple of stadium tours only in London. Being a total football fan, my husband wouldn’t miss it for sure! Those home and away dressing rooms are just awesome. Reminds me of my own Wembley and Arsenal tours! The media seating section looks perfect for a view!

' src=

I don’t know much about football, but this sounds like a pretty great tour. It’s nice that the tour groups are small and you have time to see so much. It’s interesting to learn about the difference between the away and home dressing rooms. Would have never thought the aways would be smaller and more basic than the home, but it makes sense.

' src=

This must be a dream trip for sports fans around the world! I’m not the biggest football fan but even I myself feel excited when looking at your photos of this stadium. This place is really worth a visit for everyone I think!

' src=

This sounds like a perfect spot for any football fan to explore! I think stadiums offer their own bit of history to a town and country in their own way. Looks like it makes for an interesting day out in Newcastle!

' src=

I think my husband would think he had died and gone to heaven if I booked this tour for him. So Xmas present it is, tours like this make a city so much more interesting as they are insights into the local culture and in particular being a Canadian it’s pretty cool to see all the places we hear about so often when watching British football on the telly.

' src=

So hilarious that the away team’s locker room is either too cold or too hot! A bit of a cheeky (or strategic?) arrangement. Sounds like a really fun tour. Interesting to read that you’re not allowed to drink at the window of the executive boxes – would not have guessed!

We’ve been to Newcastle a few times, such a great city with awesome nightlife. I’m not much of a footie fan but I’m sure my partner would love the tour, it looks like it gives a real insight into the stadium! Great pictures.

' src=

I’ve attended a few games at St James Park and it’s a pretty impressive stadium. To be honest, I didn’t even know they offered a stadium tour! Really cool photos, does look great and Newcastle itself is worth a visit anyway!

' src=

I’m not much of a football fan but I can imagine that fans would get a big thrill from visiting this iconic stadium. In Australia you can tour the Melbourne Cricket Ground which is supposed to be incredible. But you would need to be a fan of cricket or AFL football to enjoy this.

' src=

I didn’t even know you could tour empty stadiums!! But that’s a fun things to do for kids interested in sports as well! The changing rooms are a good little tease for the visiting team and it must be quite thrilling to walk up that tunnel where all the players get to walk before the matches.

' src=

My kids would love to experience a St James’ park Stadium tour. All the details about the locker room and the field are really interesting. The kids would love walking down the players tunnel to the match day music! I’d have to get to the end of the tunnel first to video them coming through!

I’m heading to a Newcastle game, the stadium tour before a game must be incredible. I like the idea of having a guide, I’ve been to Camp Nou and Bernabeu and its a really un personal self guided tour. Walking down the players tunnel sounds a unique experience.

Newcastle United's 60,000 'stadium dream' badly needed as East Stand fence row sparks intrigue

CEO Darren Eales stated that the club's feasibility report was "imminent" last month as East Stand row gives fans food for thought

Newcastle United fans are eagerly waiting for the results 10 months on after being invited to take part in a feasibility study.

The scheme, launched in December 2023 and operated by CAA ICON, was described as "exploring the art of the possible" by CEO Darren Eales with some fans dreaming of a St James' Park expansion and others debating the pros and cons of moving stadium. Chief Operating Officer Brad Miller dropped hints about the impending announcement on St James' next big move when indicating it would be a big decision that essentially be Newcastle laying out plans for their "forever home".

You won't be able to convince some supporters that moving ground is a good idea. Newcastle have slipped from second to seventh in terms of the biggest capacities at club level in England and that will become eighth when Everton open their new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium - a new St James' Park dream is badly needed now.

Moving ground fits in with Newcastle's continued talk of increasing revenue streams and improving their PSR status. Although, so would increasing the capacity of St James' Park IF it can be done.

Not since the year 2000 have United managed to do so when the sight of huge constructions in the Milburn Stand and Leazes End went on impressively as Premier League football was played on the hallowed turf below during the Sir Bobby Robson era. By the end of the 1999/2000 season, it was clear that Newcastle would soon have a stadium that matched their ambition.

But that was then and this is now. With thousands of supporters locked out of St James' Park the hunger for season tickets has increased again and if Newcastle are to achieve Yasir Al-Rumayyan's dream of being "number 1" a decision has to be made on the home of the Magpies.

This season Newcastle have again ensured a bit of housekeeping by replacing the faded club crests on Barrack Road with shiny new signs. At the other end of St James' a row continues to brew between the owner of a small piece of land next to the East Stand and the club.

A two-foot wooden fence was erected before the Tottenham game this month before being taken down. Have Toon chiefs tried to hoover up the tight space around the East Stand that United have tried to hoover up as much land as possible in that part of the city?

Regardless of what Newcastle can or can't do at St James' Park, it has always been feasible that the East Stand area of the ground - opened in 1973 and currently houses 5,000 fans - will be the area that can somehow be upgraded. A generation of supporters have been brought up on talk that because Leazes Terrace is Grade I listed building there isn't much that can be done to increase the capacity in that part of the ground.

The results of the feasibility report will tell us more. Going back to CCO Miller's observations back in August when he stated that Newcastle only want to write "one cheque" it will be intriguing to see if St James' Park can be increased exactly what that capacity will then be.

Would anything close to 60,000 be enough? Or if the club genuinely does want to push on and dominate Europe, which feels a long way from where we are now, is a 75,000 home, capable of staging other sports and concerts, more suitable?

Miller's words last month allowed the mind to boggle a little bit. He said: "The stadium investment is genuinely a once-in-a-generation opportunity and we want to make sure that we get that right. And I think we're doing that against the backdrop of, in the UK, we haven't got a great track record of delivering really big projects and delivering on time and successfully and making sure they work right from the absolute outset.

"So there's a lot for us to think about and that's why we are, maybe frustratingly for people, taking our time to make sure that our next steps are going to be the right ones. Because whilst we've got the ability to invest and the commitment and the ambition to invest from the ownership, we only want to write that cheque once, so we want to make sure we get it absolutely right for everybody that's involved with the club."

He also spoke about the debate on staying at St James' or moving and said: "People are okay with being a bit open-minded and sort of exploring what might that mean.

"Other people are just... No, no. Just oppose it straight away. And the reason, when I ask why is that, they give the reasons of, that's where my parents took me, that's where my grandparents took me, I've got all of that emotion, I've got all that feeling."

Whatever the club's findings of the feasibility report, there was an earlier pledge to consult supporters first on the next step. Having finally landed ambitious owners, pushing the club to the next level on all fronts is proving to be a challenge - albeit a welcome one for supporters.
