Most chilling cruise ship deaths - hot tub drowning, thrown body, and tragic overdose

Cruise ship passengers head aboard for fun, frolics and relaxation but occasionally their luxury holidays can turn into nightmares. We take a look at some of the worst tragedies on the high seas

Amy and Brad pictured on the ship

  • 16:00, 25 Aug 2024

While the chances of dying aboard a cruise ship are extremely low, with 30 million people opting for a holiday at sea each year, accidents and incidents do happen.

The average number of deaths aboard major liners each year is said to be just 31. In May, an unnamed passenger reportedly jumped from the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Icon Of The Seas , when it was heading from Miami to Honduras.

The man was rescued by the US Coast Guard but sadly passed away. In the same month, father-of-three Shane Dixon, 50, plunged to his death from the P&C cruise ship Pacific Adventure as it approached Sydney Harbour. His family said he had lost thousands of dollars in the onboard casino the night before.

From murder and manslaughter to tragic accidents, the Mirror takes a look at some of the most notorious deaths and vanishings on the high seas...

Gay's body was thrown out of a porthole by deck steward James Camb during a voyage on the Durban Castle to Southampton in 1947. Camb initially denied even seeing the actress on the cruise ship before claiming she had died from a medical episode while the couple were in bed.

The murderer, 30, had spotted the 21-year-old on the ship after it departed from South Africa, where Gay had been working for six months, before they 'became intimate'. He claimed she had begun 'frothing at the mouth' and he committed the 'beastly' act of throwing her body out of the porthole in a panic.

The killer wasn't believed - Camb was initially sentenced to hang but avoided capital punishment as a no-hanging bill was being discussed in parliament at the time. "The House of Commons has, by its vote, saved the life of the brutal lascivious murderer who thrust the poor girl he had raped and assaulted through a porthole of the ship to the sharks," said Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Released in 1959, Gay's killer was later convicted of further sexual offences and 20 years later, he died behind bars. The actress's body was never found.

Amy Lynn Bradley

Amy, from Virginia, was on the balcony of her family cabin aboard the Rhapsody Of The Seas in the early hours of March 24, 1998. But when her father Ron checked on his daughter at 6am, she was nowhere to be seen.

Amy's shoes were still on the balcony but her lighter and cigarettes had vanished with her. Ron searched the ship and when he couldn't find his daughter, he woke up his wife Iva and their son Brad.

The family begged the crew to make an announcement and not let anybody off the ship at the port of Curacao until Amy had been found, in case of abduction. The announcement her family had begged for was made at 7.50 am, by which point the majority of Royal Caribbean passengers had disembarked and crew searched common areas but not passenger and staff rooms.

What happens to Amy remains a mystery today - did she go overboard? Mum Iva claimed Amy had received a lot of attention from crew members on the ship and her family pointed out that she was a strong swimmer and trained lifeguard. Amy was declared dead after 12 years but many people have come forward to claim sightings of her since then.

Rebecca Coriam

The 24-year-old was working on the Disney Wonder cruise ship when she disappeared on May 22, 2011. The vessel was sailing off the coast of Mexico when the youth activity worker from Chester was spotted on surveillance video talking on one of the ship's internal phones.

Rebecca appeared very upset and was asked if she was ok by a fellow employee in the crew lounge, appearing to say yes before hanging up the phone and walking away. What happened next remains a mystery but a common theory is she was swept overboard by a rogue wave while at the crew pool.

Others alleged foul play and blamed the crew member's upset on a turbulent relationship. Rebecca's family made an out of court settlement with the entertainment giant in 2016.

Dianne Brimble

Dianne left Sydney, Australia on P&O's Pacific Sky on September 23, 2002 with her daughter Tahlia, sister Alma Wood and niece Kari Ann. Later that evening, she headed to the ship's nightclub and her daughter woke up the following morning with her mother nowhere to be seen.

Alma was later called to the ship's medical centre where she was told her sister had died. Dianne's naked body had been found on the floor of a cabin occupied by four unknown men. It transpired the group of men had put a date rape drug in the 42-year-old's drink in the club.

The mother-of-three had died from a combination of alcohol and an overdose of GHB - three times the amount a recreational user would have consumed. Alma, Kari Ann and Tahlia were forced to endure two more days on the ship before they could disembark and fly home to Australia.

The cabin belonged to a group of four men who were part of a larger group of eight and would soon become infamously known as 'The Adelaide Eight.' Three of the men would later be convicted of crimes associated with Dianne's death, which caused a public outcry for tighter security measures to be put in place on cruise ships to protect future potential victims.

Birdie Africa

Also known as Michael Moses Ward, Birdie had been the only child to survive the 1985 M.O.V.E. bombing. The tragedy, which killed 11 people including his mother, was the result of a firefight between Philadelphia Police and members of the Black liberation group.

Sadly, in 2013 Birdie, 41, perished aboard the Carnival Dream, which was sailing the Caribbean. He had been drinking heavily when he slid under the water in the ship's hot tub and drowned while a crowd looked on. A police report said: "Two passengers saw the body but didn't react initially, thinking it was a 'painting' and called their friends over to take a look.

"A doctor who refused to be identified also stated that he saw passengers and crew looking on and had to tell them to pull the body out." The same doctor alleged a nurse who obtained a defibrillator was hesitant about using it, allegedly unsure if it was safe to use on a wet body.

Karen Waltz

The newly wed was on the last day of her honeymoon cruise to Mexico in February 1988 when her husband Scott Roston claimed she had been swept overboard by a hard gust of wind. The chiropractor said they had been jogging around the ship's running track when tragedy struck close to San Diego but his story didn't add up.

There were no wind gusts at the time Karen went overboard Sundancer Cruises' Stardancer ship and an investigation found the doctor had been angry with his wife at dinner for eating sweets and not knowing which utensil to use. Roston, 36, soon changed his story to claim Israeli assassins had in fact slain his wife.

This tale was given short shrift and the callous honeymoon killer was sentenced to life in prison, later reduced to 33 years.

Merrian Carver

In August 2004, Merrian embarked on a solo holiday to Alaska with Celebrity Cruises. But just two days in to the week long holiday, her steward Domingo Monteiro noticed that her bed hadn't been slept in although all of her belongings were still in her room.

The concerned member of staff reported the investment banker missing to his boss daily but was allegedly told 'Just do your job and forget it' - this manager was later fired. When the cruise ended and crew members realised Merrian's belongings were still onboard, they packed them up and donated to charity.

Royal Caribbean officials had failed to secure the Massachusetts businesswoman's room, collect evidence, search the boat or even contact authorities or notify her family. Her father reported Merrian, 40, missing when they realised she had disappeared weeks later but she has never been found.

Paul Rossington and Kristen Schroder

Newly engaged Paul and Kristen died on the Carnival Spirit cruise ship in May 2013. They had been seen arguing at dinner and were caught on security cameras quarrelling in the ship's casino shortly before they took their argument to their cabin.

Security cameras showed estate agent Kristen, 27, climb over the fifth floor balcony railing of her cabin and cling to the outside of it before slipping. She struck level three of the ship and a lifeboat before tumbling into the ocean.

Paramedic Paul, 30, who was naked at the time was seen diving into the Tasman Sea, off the coast of New South Wales in Australia, in a desperate attempt to save his fiancée. The couple were never found.

Chloe Wiegand

Chloe, from Indiana, was just 18-months-old when she fell from her grandfather's arms and through an open window on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas in June 2019. The vessel was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico and she was sent plummeting 11 stories, 150 feet to the pier below.

The toddler was in a children's play area of the ship when Salvatore Anello held her up, saying he wanted her to bang on the glass as she enjoyed while watching her big brother's hockey games. He later pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and was sentenced to three years of probation.

A song for Sphen: Penguins mourn death of one half of beloved same-sex couple

They were the penguin power couple , a world-famous same-sex pairing whose love was taught about in schools and inspired a pride parade float. Now Magic, mourning Sphen's death , has led their community in a tribute song.

Sphen died earlier this month just before his 12th birthday, the Sydney Sea Life Aquarium said Thursday, a long life for a Gentoo penguin in captivity who can live up to 13 years.

“The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic’s story,” the aquarium’s general manager Richard Dilly said in a statement.

To process the loss of his partner, Magic, 8, was taken to Sphen’s body “so that he could understand his partner wouldn’t return,” Dilly said.

“He immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony,” Dilly added.

The gentoo penguin was known for adopting and raising two chicks with his partner Magic since 2018.

Sphen and Magic rose to celebrity status in 2018 when they began collecting pebbles to create a nest and became almost inseparable, regularly seen waddling around and swimming together.

The duo were together for nearly six years, roughly half their average life span, and began expanding their family soon after. They co-parented two chicks, Lara, in 2018, and Clancy in 2020. Lara was nicknamed Sphengic after her parents by the public.

“It was a beautiful example of co-parenting as a same sex couple,” Vincent Savolainen, a professor of organismic biology at Imperial College London, told NBC News.

The parents would swap between patrolling their nest perimeters to ward off thieves and incubating the egg.

Zookeepers said Sphen and Magic were natural at parenting and had been given a real egg from a couple who had two eggs so that they were not excluded from the breeding season.

Homosexual bonds in animals, including birds, has been widely documented, experts say, often noticed as a desire among the couple to co-parent an offspring.

“It’s quite common in birds that two of them will get together for co-parenting,” said Savolainen. “That can happen for multiple reasons, usually it could be advantageous, for example two males can co parent because they’re stronger and are better able to protect the egg,” he said.

“Whether it is really homosexual behavior, one can debate,” he added.

Their love story was more than just fame for the zoo, as they rose to become icons of homosexuality in Australia and beyond.

The duo was also found together outside of their usual breeding season, which according to the zoo is unique for Gentoo penguins.

One half of a famous same-sex penguin couple, Sphen, has died aged 11 at the aquarium.

Inflatables of the celebrities were featured at the pride parade in Sydney in 2021, and last year their story was included in school resources for children in the state of New South Wales to help them learn “love in all shapes in sizes.”

“Sphen and Magic are more than just a beautiful love story – their impact around the world as a symbol of equality is immeasurable,” the zoo said in its statement Thursday.

The couple was featured in numerous books, documentaries and even in the Netflix series Atypical, with their fame becoming a way for the zoo to raise awareness about the threats to the species, including pollution and global warming.

The Sydney duo is not the only same-sex couple to make headlines.

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York is home to the male penguin couple Elmer and Lima, who  became proud parents in 2022.

A male couple at a Dutch zoo nabbed the nest of a lesbian duo in 2020, a year after they stole an egg from a heterosexual couple. In 2019, a then 4-month old chick of the penguin mothers Rocky and Marama at the Sea Life Aquarium in London became the world’s first “genderless” penguin chick .

Rachel Ankler, a spokesperson for the aquarium in Sydney, told NBC News that an update on Magic’s condition and the next breeding season will be shared in the coming weeks.

“Magic may not get in partnership with another penguin ever again, especially because of his older age,” Savolainen said. “But there is a possibility he may be with another male or female penguin.”

Sphen, half of gay 'penguin power couple', dies; Sea Life Sydney Aquarium confirms

"sphen and magic are more than just a beautiful love story –their impact around the world as a symbol of equality is immeasurable," the sea life sydney aquarium said in a statement..

Sphen, half of the gay gentoo penguin couple who captured hearts around the world, has died, leaving staff and penguins at the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium "heartbroken." On Thursday, the aquarium announced that Sphen passed away.

Magic, 8, Sphen's partner, was taken to him after he died so he would understand that Sphen would not come back, reports NBC News . Magic began to sing, and the rest of his colony "beautifully reciprocated", said Richard Dilly, the aquarium’s general manager, in a statement.

"Sphen and Magic are more than just a beautiful love story –their impact around the world as a symbol of equality is immeasurable," the aquarium said in a statement.

A love story like no other

Sphen and his partner, Magic, were titled "the penguin power couple" and celebrated six years together. In that time, the same-sex couple adopted two chicks, Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020, and touched the hearts of many, according to a press release published by the aquarium.

Inspiring people around the world

Books, like Sphengic, A True Love is Love Story about Family by Kristy Esson, have been written about the penguin couple and the love they shared.

They have been featured in documentaries, and their romance is included in Australia's school curriculum.

They've also inspired a Mardi Gras float that debuted in Sydney's Mardi Gras about three years ago.

A strange, wholesome romance

Sphen and Magic were inseparable. They even spent time with each other outside of the mating season, which is unusual for gentoo penguins.

Sphen, the eldest of the two, died just before he turned 12 years old, according to the aquarium. He lived a long life, considering that gentoo penguins can live up to 13 years in captivity.

Remembering Sphen: Fans encouraged to leave a message

The aquarium encourages the couple's fans to leave a message of support or a tribute to Sphen in this time of grieving on its website .

The penguin team will then review the messages and tributes before posting them to their website.

Sphen the penguin, known for same-sex love story, dies at Sydney aquarium aged 11

One half of a famous same-sex penguin couple, Sphen, has died aged 11, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium said.

The gentoo penguin was known for adopting and raising two chicks with his partner Magic since 2018.

Sea Life said the penguin colony started singing in honour of the celebrity penguin's life.

A penguin who inspired a Mardi Gras float after making international headlines for his same-sex relationship has died aged 11.

Sphen shot to fame in 2018 after partnering up with fellow gentoo penguin Magic at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

The couple, who spent six years together, successfully fostered two chicks Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020 in what was described as an Australian first.

Normally, penguins would only raise one chick in the wild, aquarium staff said at the time.

Their love story inspired a Mardi Gras float in 2021, and also featured in books, documentaries and Netflix show Atypical.

"The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team, and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic's story," the aquarium's general manager Richard Dilly said.

"We want to take this opportunity to reflect and celebrate Spehn's life, remembering what an icon he was, the unique bond he shared with Magic and the positive impact he made in the world."

The aquarium said Sphen was nearly 12 years old when he passed away earlier this month.

His age is considered long for a gentoo penguin, which have an average life span of between 12 and 13 years.

Magic, 8, was often spotted with Sphen outside of the breeding season, which is unique for gentoo penguins, the aquarium said.

Staff first noticed an attraction between the pair when they saw them bowing to each other — a "gentoo way of saying they love each other".

"Sphen and Magic's love story captivated the world and it's been an honour to welcome local and international fans, some of which travelled long distances to see them in real life," Mr Dilly said.

"The team's focus is now on Magic, who will soon prepare for his first breeding season without Sphen."

The team took Magic to see Sphen's body to help the penguin understand that his partner would not return.

A spokesperson said Magic "immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony".

Sphen, Penguin Whose Gay Love Story Earned Global Fame, Dies

For six years, Sphen and Magic were devoted partners, adoptive parents and queer icons. After Sphen died this month at age 11, Magic began singing.

By Isabella Kwai

Sphen, a male gentoo penguin whose enduring partnership with another male penguin in the colony led them to become international queer icons, has died, according to the Sydney aquarium that housed them. He was 11.

The penguin died earlier this month after his health deteriorated, the Sea Life Sydney Aquarium team said in an email. The aquarium did not give additional information on his ailment but said that it made the difficult decision to euthanize Sphen, “easing him of any pain or discomfort.”

For Sphen and Magic, a summer meet-cute in Sydney sparked their six-year partnership. Sphen, three years older, had come from SeaWorld, while Magic was born in an aquarium in Melbourne. In a colony of young, flirty penguins at Sea Life, the two had eyes only for each other: bowing, singing and bringing each other pebbles for a potential future nest, according to penguin keepers. Young gentoo penguins can take some time to choose their partners, but Sphen and Magic did not waste any.

“They weren’t interested in other birds in the colony,” Tish Hannan, the head of penguin supervision at the aquarium, said in an interview in 2019. “They’ve chosen each other. That’s it. They’re bonded now.”

The penguin keepers embraced their partnership and gave them a dummy egg to foster. They were later given a real egg after a heterosexual penguin couple appeared to be neglecting their parenting duties. Sphen and Magic, who had achieved relative stability with their big nest, diligently nurtured their bundle of joy, swapping shifts to incubate the egg and keep it warm. They hatched a chick, Sphengic, now called Lara, in 2018 and paired up again in 2020 to hatch Clancy.

Their courtship, which came soon after Australia legalized gay marriage in a protracted battle that brought up personal, religious and political tensions , offered a symbol of optimism for the queer community and its supporters. Their likenesses were memorialized on floats at Pride celebrations in Sydney, and their story was retold in documentaries. They were even featured in an episode of the Netflix coming-of-age series “ Atypical .” In 2023, teachers in New South Wales said that their story would become a resource for primary school curriculums as part of a unit on family and relationships.

The couple’s fame drew local and international tourists, who watched them waddle around their home in the aquarium on Sydney’s docks. Unusually for gentoo penguin couples, the aquarium said, the pair were so close they even spent time together outside of breeding season. After spending more than half his life with his partner, Magic will now face his first breeding season without Sphen, said Richard Dilly, general manager at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

“The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic’s story,” he said.

To help him mourn the loss, the aquarium said that it took Magic, who turns 9 this year, to see Sphen after he died. He started singing. The rest of the colony joined in.
