Carnival Ships by Size [2024] with Comparison Chart

By jeremy camosse feb 2024.

Complete list of Carnival Ships by Size. From Biggest to Smallest, you'll find every Carnival Cruise Ship, including total passengers, decks, and more!

Below you'll find a complete list of Carnival Ships by Size . From the cruise line's smallest ships (Carnival Elation & Paradise) to their most recently launched ship, the massive Carnival Jubilee.

You'll see a gigantic difference between Carnival's smallest and the largest ship in their fleet. Scroll to the bottom of our sizing chart. You'll find that earlier ships were less than half the size of today's largest Carnival ships. To say, "my how you've grown" would be an understatement.

The drastic change in size can also be measured by "passenger count." Max capacity spans a range from 2,600 guests to over 6,600 passengers for Carnival's largest cruise ship, the Carnival Celebration.

First, we have to clear something up. We're measuring Carnival ships size by the metric, " Gross Tonnage ." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

GROSS TONNAGE

A nonlinear measure of a ship's overall internal volume. Gross tonnage is calculated based on the moulded volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship and is used to determine things such as a ship's manning regulations, safety rules, registration fees, and port dues, whereas the older gross register tonnage is a measure of the volume of only certain enclosed spaces.

We told you it was boring! So why do we use this measurement to determine Carnival Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's prevalent. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more. We've also used it to compare across cruise lines to bring you the list of the largest cruise ships in the world . Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's the good stuff!

We're constantly asked about Carnival's ships and size statistics. Here are the most frequently asked questions for your convenience!

Carnival Ships by Size Most Asked Questions

The largest active vessel in Carnival's fleet is the Carnival Celebration. She weighs in at 183,521 gross tons. However, the Celebration will soon share this title with the planned Carnival Jubilee. The sister ship will be completed in 2023.

Carnival's smallest, active cruise ship is the Carnival Paradise with a gross tonnage measuring 70,367. The smallest ship that has sailed with the cruise line was significantly smaller. The original Carnival Mardi Gras (built in 1961) was 1/3rd the size, at 18,261 GT.

Carnival's fleet varies in size as seen from our chart. The smallest, active ship holds 3,526 total passengers (including staff) and measures 855 feet in length. The Carnival Celebration, in comparison, holds 8,375 passengers and spans 1,130 feet in length. For reference, the Eiffel Tower is roughly 900 feet high!

Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Carnival cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest Carnival ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary and often the ship age. Newer ships tend to cost more per sailing.

We hope that the above list of Carnival Ships by size help you to find your ideal cruise.

As a result of the 2020-2021 cruise industry shutdown, Carnival Cruise Line sold off five Fantasy-class ships. Parent company Carnival Corporation sold off 21 cruise ships in total.

Three were sold for scrap metal, including  Carnival Fantasy ,  Carnival Imagination , and  Carnival Inspiration . Carnival Fascination  was sold to another cruise line that never got off the ground, and it was eventually scrapped in December 2021.

In 2022, it was announced that Carnival Sensation and Carnival Ecstasy would also be leaving the fleet.

What does gross registered tonnage mean?

Gross registered tonnage (GRT) doesn’t measure how much the cruise ship weighs but the total space inside. Every 100 cubic feet is equivalent to one gross registered ton.

Do all Carnival ships have Starlink internet?

By 2024, all Carnival Cruise Line ships will have Starlink wireless internet service.

Carnival Cruise Line will launch biggest ships ever starting in 2029

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Carnival Cruise Line is going bigger than ever before with a new class of ships.

The cruise line will welcome the first of the three new vessels in the summer of 2029, each with more than 3,000 cabins and a full capacity of nearly 8,000 guests. The others will follow in 2031 and 2033, and the class will mark the largest ships in the history of the line and its parent company, Carnival Corp.

“We are proud to be known as America’s cruise line with tremendous guest loyalty and an outstanding team that has enabled us to deliver memorable vacations to over 100 million guests,” the line’s president, Christine Duffy, said in a news release Tuesday. “For this next generation ship, we are focused on creating innovative guest experiences that will take Carnival Cruise Line into the future with new fun features and excitement that we know our guests will love.”

The ships will be constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“We are excited to join forces with Carnival Cruise Line to debut a new class of ship, which will be the largest cruise ship ever constructed by Fincantieri and the largest ship ever built in Italy,” Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said. The cruise line will share additional specifics about the design and itineraries at a later date.

The news comes after Carnival announced orders for two more Excel class ships earlier this year, scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028. Those will join current Excel class ships Carnival Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee.

Carnival will also add two existing ships to its fleet from sister brand P&O Cruises Australia, which Carnival Corp. plans to retire in March 2025.

Let the 'Celebration' begin: Cruise giant Carnival's biggest ship ever debuts this weekend

Gene Sloan

It's celebration time for Carnival Cruise Line fans. Literally.

The maiden voyage of the line's much-awaited Carnival Celebration will take place Sunday as the vessel departs Southampton, England, on a two-week transatlantic cruise to Miami.

Recently completed at a shipyard in Finland, the 15-deck-high ship is a sister vessel to Carnival's giant, 1-year-old Mardi Gras . Mardi Gras made waves in 2021 for its huge size and what may be the most unusual attraction on a cruise ship: a decktop roller coaster .

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The two ships both measure 181,808 tons, putting them in a tie for the position of biggest ship ever to sail for Carnival.

Both Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ship currently afloat, the 3-year-old Carnival Panorama ; they are also bigger than all but 11 other cruise vessels in the world.

Like Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration has a roller coaster on its top deck. Dubbed Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it's similar to the roller coaster on Mardi Gras, with an 800-foot-long track. Its vehicles will reach speeds of 40 miles per hour — give or take.

Both of the ships are designed to hold up to 6,630 passengers. That's just a tad below the 7,084 passengers that can fit aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas — the world's largest cruise ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

Also like Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration will have a giant water park on its top deck and a far broader array of suites than earlier Carnival ships. However, the vessel won't be a carbon copy of its sister.

It'll offer several new features, including a revamped main interior area called Celebration Central. Known as Grand Central on Mardi Gras, the ocean-facing atrium area on Carnival Celebration will span three decks and provide access to multiple food and entertainment venues.

It'll offer daytime ocean views and nighttime shows on its stage, which has been enhanced as compared to the one on Mardi Gras and has more color-changing lights than the original — 1,400, to be exact. Designed to look like confetti, they'll be one of the first things passengers see when they board the ship.

The development of ships on the scale of Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras has been a big deal for Carnival. Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build ever-bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience.

Carnival's last new vessel, Carnival Panorama, didn't even crack the top 40 list of biggest ships when it debuted in 2019.

the biggest carnival cruise ship

The vessel is scheduled to sail six- to eight-day voyages to the Bahamas and the Caribbean out of Miami. Fares start at $449 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Carnival Celebration is debuting just four weeks after Carnival retired its oldest and smallest ship , Carnival Ecstasy.

Carnival is also adding a second ship to its fleet this month with the arrival of Carnival Luminosa , a 13-year-old vessel that until recently was in the fleet of Carnival's sister brand Costa Cruises. The ship formerly was known as Costa Luminosa.

With the arrival of Carnival Celebration and Carnival Luminosa as well as the departure of Carnival Ecstasy, the line's fleet is increasing by one ship to 24 ships in all.

Carnival also will absorb two more Costa ships into its fleet in 2023 and 2024 as parent company Carnival Corp. pulls back on cruises in China, where Costa had been a major player.

A third ship in the same series as Carnival Celebration, to be called Carnival Jubilee, is on order from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The shipyard is owned by the same company that built Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras.

TPG will be reporting live from Carnival Celebration's first sailing out of Miami, starting Nov. 21.
