WEATHER ALERT

A flood warning in effect for 3 counties in the area

Jack black ends tenacious d tour after bandmate's trump shooting comment.

Maria Sherman

Associated Press

The comedy rock duo Tenacious D — made up of Jack Black and Kyle Gass — has canceled the rest of their tour after Gass' remarks about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump .

While onstage at a concert in Sydney on Sunday, Gass was presented with a birthday cake and asked to “make a wish” by Black. Gass responded, “Don't miss Trump next time,” an apparent reference to the rally shooting a day before that left the former president with an injured ear. The video of Gass was widely circulated on social media.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black said in a Tuesday statement on Instagram . “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Following Black's statement, Gass apologized on Instagram.

“The line I improvised Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” he wrote Tuesday. “I don't condone violence in any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I'm incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.”

The band recently completed dates in the U.S. and Europe. Their “Spicy Meatball Tour” was slated to continue Tuesday night in Newcastle, hitting most major cities in Australia and New Zealand this month before returning to the U.S. for a select few dates in October.

“Frontier Touring regret to advise that Tenacious D’s concert tonight at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed,” their touring company announced in a statement on Instagram Tuesday. “Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.”

When asked for further comment, a represented for the band directed the Associated Press back to Black's statement. Details on refunds for the remaining tour dates were not immediately available.

Jack Black cancels tour after Tenacious D bandmate makes Trump shooting joke

ABCNews logo

Tenacious D, the band led by actor Jack Black, is calling off its tour and putting "all future creative plans on hold" after band member Kyle Gass made a joke about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday.

Gass joked, "Don't miss Trump next time," on stage during a show on the Australia leg of their tour in Sydney after he was told to make a wish while blowing out candles on a birthday cake.

Gass, 64, issued an apology Tuesday morning, writing the line was "highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake."

"I don't condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone," Gass said on Instagram. "What happened was a tragedy, and I'm incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I've let down and truly regret any pain I've caused."

Black himself had said on Instagram earlier Tuesday morning that he was "blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday."

"I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form," Black wrote on social media. "After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."

Black formed Tenacious D alongside Gass after the two young comedic actors met in Los Angeles in the 1990s. They released their self-titled debut album in September 2001, just after Black's breakout role in the cult classic film "High Fidelity."

The debut album went platinum in the U.S. and U.K. The group released the movie "Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny" in 2006.

The group released three more albums after their debut: "The Pick of Destiny" (2006), "Rize of the Fenix" (2012) and "Post-Apocalypto" (2018).

Tenacious D had five more shows in Australia and New Zealand before returning to the U.S. for five shows in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Black is a big supporter of President Joe Biden and has taken part in fundraisers for the current president.

Australian Sen. Ralph Babet, a fervent Trump supporter, even pushed Tuesday for the prime minister to deport Black and Gass after the comment.

"I call on the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese to join me in denouncing Tenacious D, Jack Black and band member Kyle Gass, and I call on the immigration Minister Andrew Giles to revoke their visas and deport them immediately," Babet wrote in a letter.

Tenacious D cancels IU show, fall tour following controversial remarks

enttenaciousd072024-jpg

Tenacious D , the acclaimed rock duo consisting of comedians Jack Black and Kyle Gass, has canceled its highly anticipated fall tour, including its scheduled performance at the IU Auditorium. The band, known for its unique blend of humor and rock music, was set to perform Oct. 22 at the IU Auditorium this fall.

It comes after Gass made a joke about the assassination attempt against former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump during a recent show. According to IndyStar , in a video from a July 14 show in Sydney , Australia, Black is seen singing happy birthday to Gass onstage. When Black tells Gass to make a wish, he responded: "Don't miss Trump next time." According to Reuters , the comment quickly drew backlash, leading to widespread criticism and calls for accountability.

In response, Gass released a statement apologizing for the remark.

“What happened was a tragedy, and I'm incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement,” Gass said in a separate now-deleted statement posted to his Instagram. “I profoundly apologize to those I've let down and truly regret any pain I've caused.”

Black also released his own statement on Instagram , announcing the tour’s cancellation.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday,” Black said. “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”

The IU Auditorium, a key venue for major performances in Bloomington, has experienced cancellations before. In May, comedian Matt Rife cancelled his sold-out shows at the IU Auditorium due to a medical emergency. One of the shows was already scheduled to begin when it was cancelled. His last-minute cancellation came after he postponed then rescheduled the shows in February.

Fans and community members have shared mixed reactions , and the incident has sparked broader conversations online about the responsibilities of public figures.

For more information on future events and updates from the IU Auditorium, visit IU Auditorium’s official website .

Tenacious D cancels tour, Columbus show, after Trump comment

Jack Black is speaking out against his bandmate's controversial comment  about the  assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump .

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, the "School of Rock" actor, 54, said he was "blindsided" by bandmate Kyle Gass saying "don't miss Trump next time" on stage during their  Tenacious D  show on Sunday.

Black also said he is ending the Tenacious D tour and pausing plans to continue working with Gass.

"I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form," Black said. "After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."

Tenacious D was set to continue performing this month  with tour stops  in Australia and New Zealand. The band had also announced a series of " Rock D Vote " shows in the fall to benefit the nonpartisan organization Rock the Vote ahead of the presidential election, kicking it off in Columbus on Oct. 21.

Rocking out for democracy: Tenacious D to kick off tour in Columbus this fall

During a Tenacious D show Sunday in Sydney, Black presented a cake to Gass for his birthday and told him to make a wish. "Don't miss Trump next time," Gass said, referencing the assassination attempt on Trump.

On Saturday, during a rally in Pennsylvania, 20-year-old  Thomas Matthew Crooks  shot at Trump,  who later said  a bullet "pierced the upper part of my right ear." The shooting  left one rally attendee dead  and two injured. In the aftermath, officials in both parties, including  President Joe Biden , spoke out to condemn political violence.

Gass' comments received backlash as they went viral Monday on social media. "Evil," Tesla CEO  Elon Musk   wrote  in response to a clip of the moment. Video showed the concert audience cheering Gass' joke, though Black did not remark upon it. "Thank you," he said before moving the show along.

Black has been performing with Gass in Tenacious D, a comedy rock band, since 1994. They co-starred in a comedy film about the band, "Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny," in 2006.

Black is a supporter of Biden and went viral in June after  delivering a passionate speech  for the president's re-election campaign at a fundraiser. Wearing American flag overalls, he said, "When democracy is at stake, Jack Black answers the call."

Jack Black says he is canceling Tenacious D tour, which included stop in Bloomington

Portrait of Jill Bond

Tenacious D frontman Jack Black told USA TODAY he is canceling the band's tour, which included a stop in Bloomington at IU Auditorium this fall, after a controversial statement by bandmate Kyle Gass .

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, the "School of Rock" actor, 54, said he was "blindsided" by Gass saying "don't miss Trump next time" on stage during their  Tenacious D  show on Sunday.

The Bloomington show, scheduled for Oct. 22, was one of only five stops on the band's “Rock D Vote” tour.

"I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form," Black said. "After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."

During a Tenacious D show Sunday in Sydney, Australia, Black presented a cake to Gass for his birthday and told him to make a wish.

IU Auditorium's director of audience engagement has not responded yet to an email sent Tuesday morning seeking confirmation the nearly sold-out show has been canceled.

"...Baby One More Time (from Kung Fu Panda 4)" by Tenacious D

Tenacious D is feeling the wrath of Australia’s right-wing after Kyle Gass made an off-color joke at the expense of Donald Trump.

The comedy-rock duo of Gass and Hollywood star Jack Black are visiting Australia for the Spicy Meatball Tour , produced by Frontier Touring .

On Sunday (July 14), in footage widely shared on social media, the “Tribute” singers were on stage at the ICC Sydney , when Black and a “robot” presented Gass with a birthday cake.

Several Australian shock-jocks and right-wing politicians didn’t see the funny side of Gass’ comments, and, on Tuesday afternoon, reps for the concert promoter announced that the sold-out concert that night at Newcastle Entertainment Centre would be postponed.

Earlier, Senator Ralph Babet, a member of the right-wing United Australia Party, took to social media on Monday to demand that Tenacious D be deported for the quip. In a statement, Babet called on Australia’s immigration minister Andrew Giles to “revoke their visas.”

Babet wrote, “Anything less than a deportation is an endorsement of the shooting and the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump.”

Controversial broadcaster Kyle Sandilands blasted the pair during his Kyle and Jackie O show, and issued a life-long ban. “That’s some serious twisted s—,” he remarked . “I never want to speak to them again.”

Tenacious D’s forthcoming Australian tour dates include Brisbane Entertainment Centre (July 18), a sold-out show at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena (July 20) and a performance at Adelaide Entertainment Centre (July 22), with NZ dates to follow at Wellington’s TSB Arena (July 24) and Auckland’s Spark Arena (July 26).

“Frontier Touring regret to advise that Tenacious D’s concert tonight at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed,” reads a statement . “Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.” A spokesperson tells Billboard there is no further comment.

Jack Black ends Tenacious D tour after bandmate's Trump comment

The comedy rock duo Tenacious D — made up of Jack Black and Kyle Gass — has canceled the rest of their tour after Gass' remarks about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

While onstage at a concert in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday, Gass was presented with a birthday cake and asked to “make a wish” by Black. Gass responded, “Don't miss Trump next time,” an apparent reference to the rally shooting a day prior that left the former president with an injured ear.

Following Black's statement, Gass apologized on Instagram .

The band recently completed dates in the United States and Europe. Its “Spicy Meatball Tour” was slated to continue Tuesday night in Newcastle, Australia, hitting most major cities in that country and New Zealand this month before returning to the United States for a select few dates in October.

“Frontier Touring regret to advise that Tenacious D’s concert tonight at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed,” the duo's touring company announced in a statement on Instagram Tuesday. “Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.”

When asked for further comment, a representative for the band directed The Associated Press back to Black's statement. Details on refunds for the remaining tour dates were not immediately available.

On Soccer With Rory Smith

A post-euros, post-copa mailbag.

Euro 2024 memories, Copa América issues and the enduring allure of a winning goal.

Lionel Messi, seen through the goal's net, shoots over a fallen goalkeeper.

By Rory Smith

As promised, this week’s newsletter has been designed as a monument to late-stage capitalism, in that the writing of it has largely been outsourced, but I am still taking credit for it. There are two issues, however, that arose perhaps a little too late in soccer’s month of festivities but which nevertheless warrant our attention.

The first is the departure of Gareth Southgate after eight years as England manager , a period in which he not only achieved the sort of success which would have looked like a golden age to most of his predecessors, but managed to do so while also largely embracing the absurd political and social expectations the country places on the role.

One aspect that has been missing from much of the coverage of Southgate’s departure is that of boredom. There had been (understandable) pressure on Southgate because of the soccer he played. There was (unwarranted) pressure on him because of his perceived social stances. But there was also pressure on him because he had been around for so long, and people like change.

England is not used to having a successful national team. England is not, in fact, used to having a national team not dogged by scandal and outrage. Southgate’s tenure has, essentially, been a quiet one.

The team has worked. The players have enjoyed it. But the lack of drama has been a source of frustration, too, a sense that England is just not interesting enough. Problems have not been imagined, but they have probably been exaggerated, by both the news media and fans, because England without noise is alien and unsettling and somehow unfulfilling.

The second issue, the much more serious one, comes in the form of the appalling scenes from the final of the Copa América, a match that was delayed after what appeared to be the complete breakdown of security outside the stadium in Miami. It was a fitting end to a tournament that was, organizationally, a disgrace.

The immediate, predictable response of the authorities was to suggest that the problems were caused by thousands of ticketless fans who rushed the gates, breaking and entering, and how that ruined the experience for some fans who had paid thousands of dollars to attend. This is a playbook soccer has seen many times, and it is to be resisted.

The responsibility of the safe staging of an event is on those who have organized it. Why were so many people without tickets — if that is what happened — allowed to get so close to the stadium? Why were they in a position to rush the gates? Why did the authorities respond to this by allowing anyone in, and then blocking the gates to everyone?

There will always be people who wish to attend a game and do not have the right to do so. It is the job of the authorities to filter them out. That is the case at every other major event. Soccer should not be considered different.

And with that, we open the mailbag.

How do you think Euro 2024 will be remembered? — Bracken Godfrey

Well, there’s a very good chance it will be mentioned on an almost daily basis in England for the next half-century or so. But plenty of other nations will have cause to remember it fondly: Slovenia, after playing the first knockout game in its history; Georgia, which thrived at its first major tournament appearance; Turkey, Romania, Albania for the sheer exuberance (and numbers) of their fans.

More broadly, though, my guess is that Euro 2024 will come to be seen as the start of something, the tournament at which the outline of soccer’s immediate future was drawn. The soccer was not always thrilling, in truth, but it was the stage on which Kobbie Mainoo, Arda Guler and, particularly, Lamine Yamal confirmed that they are the sport’s coming things.

This year’s Euros have been a bit of a letdown, outside of a few matches involving Turkey and Georgia. The top players seem a step slower when summer rolls around. Is it time to rethink our traditions and advocate for midyear tournaments and breaks? — Bob Leon

That fatigue has been an issue in both the European Championship and the Copa América is not in doubt, but whether there is anything that can be done about it is a little more complex. Most major leagues in Europe do have some sort of winter break but, Germany aside, it is hardly enough to make up for the demands placed on the players before and after.

My feeling has always been that soccer benefits from taking one of every two summers off, granting the players a fallow spell in those years that do not bring a continental championship or a World Cup. That, though, appears to be a thing of the past — there’s a Club World Cup next summer — and the expanded Champions League will only add to the burden.

Staging these big international tournaments in the middle of the season had not occurred to me, but it does make sense: It was a factor in what made the 2022 World Cup so compelling. As a rule, the leagues themselves would not countenance it on a regular basis, but they will doubtless make an exception for Saudi Arabia 2034.

My hope is that soccer’s elite teams will have seen the Euros and want to play more like Georgia or Turkey. My theory is that you can’t win a tournament playing like that, because of the work rate it requires. What is the solution? Larger rosters? Unlimited substitutions? — Tony Bankston

I would be wholly on board if everyone decided to play more like Georgia or Turkey, Tony, but I’m just as skeptical as you are. Fatigue is not the only issue: More experienced, higher-quality teams are generally quite adept at absorbing pressure, rerouting energy and then picking off opponents who afford them vast expanses of green space.

Whether there is a structural measure that might level the playing field is hard to say. My sense, though, is that the point at which soccer essentially has unlimited substitutions is not too far away: maybe a couple of decades at the outside. That is not said with any approval, to be clear, but it is the general direction of travel.

At a time when the Copa América and the Euros are going on, I would expect you to write something about the Copa. I haven’t seen much, other than a discussion of Marcelo Bielsa’s philosophy . — Pablo Echeverri

This is, sadly, an accurate depiction of my coverage, and for that I can only apologize. I would point out, however, that I am just one person, and a person who has been in Germany, rather than the Copa, at that. But this question does raise a significant issue: the somewhat unilateral relationship European soccer has with, well, everyone else.

The Copa América has never made an especially large imprint on the other side of the Atlantic. Some of that, of course, is unavoidable: The games kick off in the middle of the night, meaning that only the most tenacious fans are likely to watch.

If Conmebol, the organizer, wanted to change that, it could play games at more appealing times for European fans, but the reality is that Europe is not an especially important — soccer’s preferred euphemism for “lucrative” — market. The United States, and Asia, are much more significant.

That said, it did feel like a misstep scheduling the semifinals and finals of the Copa to coincide with the conclusion of the European Championship. There would have been an audience for Argentina against Colombia in Europe; a niche one, yes, but an audience nonetheless. Scheduling that game so it would air well after midnight in Europe, and many hours after the Euro 2024 final, was not the best way to reach it.

Attendance at the Copa América and Euro 2024 was roughly the same, but Copa ticket prices were much higher, sometimes thousands of dollars more. The Copa charged for the show, not the game. — Andrzej Franks

Yes, it did, and that is a mistake. Soccer is governed by market forces, of course, much like the United States. Conmebol’s position most likely would be that if people are prepared to pay that much for a ticket, then there is no reason not to charge it. Nobody is shocked that it costs a lot of money to see Taylor Swift.

Unfortunately, that is not quite the whole picture. Total attendance at the Copa was strong, but there also were large patches of empty seats at games: almost 20,000 when Mexico played in Houston, and more than 30,000 to watch the United States in Arlington, Texas. Perhaps making tickets cheaper might have enticed more people to turn up and watch? It would be a shame, certainly, if the same thing happened at the World Cup in 2026.

I was born and raised in Asia before moving to the United States, but it’s truly surprising how many people here seem to overestimate the allure of coaching the U.S. national team. It is an attractive job for some, but it is by no means one of the premier job opportunities in international soccer. — Walid Neaz

This is almost certainly true, and only partially because it is true of every nation. Elite managers are incredibly reluctant to move to international management — most prize the cut-and-thrust of working with players on a daily basis — until they reach the autumn of their careers.

But, and this is important, living and working (and building a brand) in the United States is something that people in soccer take extremely seriously. It may not appeal to everyone. It would not, for example, tempt Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta at this point. But there are advantages that, leveraged correctly, make the job more appealing than the team’s world ranking might suggest.

I’d like to see the final of any competition, especially the World Cup, settled by a final goal scored no matter how many minutes it takes. — Peter Thorp

This newsletter has been running for five years, I think. In that time, we have had countless suggestions for ways to tweak soccer. I cannot remember any that have been as good as this. Yes: In finals, and finals only, we should 100 percent abandon penalties and make it next goal wins. I am wholly, absolutely, enthusiastically on board.

The final question goes to Ben Grant, who somehow managed to capture in words the most pressing issue facing all of soccer in the year 2024. Ben, channeling humanity as a whole, asked: What historical polity would have the best soccer team if we were to take historical borders and apply them to today’s player pool?

By way of example, Ben mentioned the Hapsburg empire of Philip II, which included Iberia, the Low Countries, Southern Italy and all of South America; the “brief unification of the Austrian and Spanish Hapsburg possessions with Iberia and most of Central Europe”; Rome, under the Emperor Trajan, stretching from the Levant to Northumbria; and the Holy Roman Empire of Charlemagne.

The answer, to me, seems reasonably obvious. If Philip II’s territory still held today, it would have Alisson Becker in goal; a defense built around Virgil van Dijk; Rodri patrolling the midfield; the artistry of Kevin De Bruyne; the wizardry of Lionel Messi; and the searing pace of Vinícius Júnior. Even with all of that, though, I am confident in saying that Cristiano Ronaldo would still be taking the free kicks.
