Our review on Michael Flatley's Lord Of The Dance

25 years of lord of the dance - palace theatre, manchester - thursday 14th july 2022 by abigail holden.

Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance is back, for its 25th anniversary and it’s better than ever. Personally, I knew that the show was Irish dancing and that the dancers would have footwork quicker than the speed of light, but I didn’t know much more than that. However, I was still extremely excited to see this show, as it has always fascinated me, with how quickly and precisely the dancers can move, having seen snippets of the show on various TV shows. I was not disappointed and have fallen in love with this worldwide, record-breaking phenomenon.

The show itself is made up of the storyline of the Little Spirit and her dreams. She dreams of the Lord of the Dance and his arch-nemesis, The Dark Lord. The Dark Lord wants to become the Lord of the Dance, and nearly succeeds by tempting the Lord of the Dance away from his true love, Saoirse, with the dark and mysterious Morrighan, who turns out to be working for The Dark Lord. The story continues, without giving away too many spoilers, the fight of good (the Lord of the Dance) and evil (The Dark Lord) continues, with interludes of a love story, a cheeky and playful Little Spirit, a lot of footwork and some very talented fiddlers, Erin the Goddess, putting into words what the dances mean, in the form of song.

Matt Smith , as the Lord of the Dance, blew me away with his first entrance onto the stage being something to remember, with his charismatic smile and unbelievable talent. However, before we meet the Lord of the Dance, the Little Spirit must dream him up first. The Little Spirit came in the form of the lovely Cassidy Ludwig , who dazzled the audience with sprinkles of glitter and her cheekiness towards The Dark Lord and his Warriors (especially when she kicked one of them up the bum as he exited the stage, to show her hatred for them). As rivals for the love of the Lord of the Dance, Lauren Clarke ’s Saoirse and Cyra Taylor ’s Morringhan were light on their feet, gaining so much air-time they looked as though they were flying. The Dark Lord himself was played by the highly experienced and truly incredible, Zoltan Papp . Having performed opposite Michael Flattley, he brought all of the energy required to make The Dark Lord scary and surprisingly funny, at the same time.

The roles of Saoirse, Morringhan, the Lord of the Dance and The Dark Lord are played by different people on different nights, meaning each show is a different experience, as you witness the small changes that occur due to the way each person works with each other. You could watch the show 100 times and get something different out of it each time, which is why people keep coming back for more.

The back of the stage had a higher platform, which had steps that led to the main stage, with the whole of the back of the stage being a massive LED screen, that showed Celtic knot patterns and different landscapes that went with the dance and the character, such as The Dark Lord’s dark forest, that was engulfed in flames.

One of my favourite parts of the entire show is the iconic end to act one, which is simply named, Lord of the Dance. That music, with those costumes and that choreography has awed people all over the world, me included. The canon, down the horizontal line of dancers, where they don’t miss a single beat by even a nanosecond? INCREDIBLE.

In conclusion, from the hardcore fans that have followed Lord of the Dance since its birth 25 years ago, to the novices of viewing the show, such as myself, every single person in the auditorium enjoyed the show. If you like Irish dancing, or if you like topless men moving their feet so fast that you cannot see it with the naked eye, or even if you are just looking for something new to see at the theatre, this is the show for you.

Michael Flattely’s dream became a reality in the shape of the biggest dance show of all time. It is so inspiring to see it and encourages me, as I am sure it does others, to follow my dreams. No dream is too big, as Lord of the Dance shows time and time again. WE SCORE LORD OF THE DANCE - 10/10

Michael Flatley opens up on cancer diagnosis as he 'never entertained' it could be fatal

American-born Irish dancer Michael Flatley is taking his reimagined Lord Of The Dance show on the road, 30 years after his original seven-minute performance wowed Eurovision fans

Michael Flatley ‘never entertained’ the idea his cancer could be fatal

  • 16:36, 26 Jun 2024
  • Updated 07:49, 27 Jun 2024

Riverdance star Michael Flatley has said he "never entertained" the idea that his cancer could have killed him.

The Irish dancer was diagnosed with an "aggressive" form of cancer in 2023, but is now in remission after treatment. The 65-year-old found fame with his seven-minute dance performance at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, which was extended to become the successful stage show Riverdance. Flatley went on to create Lord Of The Dance, which enjoyed a record-breaking 21-date run at Wembley Stadium. Ahead of his upcoming tour of a new version of Lord Of The Dance, the Chicago-born dancer told ITV's Good Morning Britain he is "feeling pretty good", following his cancer diagnosis and treatment.

He said: "I think, for anybody who finds themselves in this position, the most important thing is a positive mental attitude. Just be positive. I never entertained the possibility that this could be fatal in any way. I've always focused on the positive, and I surrender myself to the Lord and he saw me through this."

Flatley told Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis he blamed a 2016 house fire for the cancer, adding that he was "one of the most fit men in Ireland" for many years before the blaze. Although presenters Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis pointed out the fire wasn't the official reason for Flatley’s diagnosis, he claimed his health began to deteriorate afterwards.

The Riverdance star opened up about his latest Lord Of The Dance tour - which begins in July - explaining it features holograms of him. He explained: "I perform in a hologram, so there's three of me in different areas. We do a dance-off against each other and it’s quite a highlight, the audience seems to love it, which is a great thing. This show is fantastic, a lifetime of standing ovations, some of the greatest dancers in the world .

"I’ve changed the show, they’re all using their arms now, which I am really proud of. We changed Irish dancing since the first day I created Riverdance, and 28 years later with Lord Of The Dance, we’re still selling out."

The dancer said that because of his health, he "wouldn’t be able to do a long tour" again, but he has no plans to make the whole show in a hologram form, adding: "I love to see humans." During the interview, Flatley also confirmed he was working on a new film based around dancing.

Flatley’s Lord Of The Dance tour begins on July 16 at Edinburgh Playhouse, and visits Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham before finishing in Londonderry on November 9.

Daniel Brown, a 29-year-old Englishman playing his first career major, came close to quitting professional golf five years ago, but now he enters the weekend tied for second place.

UK and Ireland leading the way

For the first time since 1951, the top three players at the halfway stage of The Open Championship are all from Ireland or the United Kingdom:

  • -7: Shane Lowry (Ireland)
  • -5: Daniel Brown (England), Justin Rose (England)

Speaking after sinking that putt to make the cut, Max Homa says: "It felt really good. I haven't had a lot of great moments this year. Hopefully I get two more days of this.

"I just love this golf touranment. I was proud of myself for not packing it in today after two really bad holes.

"I'm stoked to have a chance tomorrow."

Harman advances, Bradley and Hatton cut

Rounding out a few other notable names:

  • 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley cards a 75 to miss the cut by one stroke at +7.
  • Last year's Open Championship winner Brian Harman birdies 18 to card a 73 and head into the weekend at +4.
  • Tyrrell Hatton bogeyed two of the last three holes and was six-over-par on the back nine overall to finish at +8 and miss the cut.

Hugh Kellenberger

Homa makes cut with final putt

Max Homa just poured in a 28-foot birdie putt on 18 to make the cut on the number, and reacted as if he had just taken the lead at Royal Troon. Very cool stuff from Homa, who had a breakthrough majors moment at April's Masters (T3) only to struggle for much of the past three months. The birdie finished off a 1-over 72 on Friday.

DeChambeau bows out

T100: DeChambeau (+9) 75

Bryson DeChambeau's tournament is over. After shooting five-over-par yesterday, he could only do one stroke better today. The winner of last month's U.S. Open misses the cut by three strokes.

Justin Ray

MacIntyre achieves rare 'feat'

MacIntyre achieves rare 'feat'

Robert MacIntyre achieved a rare feat today, making the cut despite carding a triple bogeys on 1 and 4.

He became just the third player in the last 30 years to record multiple triple bogeys or worse in round 2 of a major and still make the cut, joining Brett Ogle at the 1996 Open and Mark Hensby at the 2005 Open.

MacIntyre caps back-nine recovery

T51: MacIntyre (+5) 75

A disastrous start to the day threatened to see last week's Scottish Open winner miss the cut, but a back nine at three-under-par has Robert MacIntyre safely in the clubhouse with two more days of golf to play.

Rahm in contention heading into weekend

Rahm in contention heading into weekend

T13: Rahm (+1) 70

Rahm leaves a six-foot putt just short of the hole on 18, missing an opportunity to get back to even par heading into the weekend. Still, the two-time major winner sits in a decent position to get into the mix on moving day.

DeChambeau on the brink

T90: DeChambeau (+8) +3 thru 16

Bryson DeChambeau has an oppotunity for a direly needed birdie on 16 but fails to putt home from 10 feet. He likely needs to birdie both of his remaining holes now to continue playing into the weekend.

MacIntyre bouncing back after nightmare start

MacIntyre bouncing back after nightmare start

T51: MacIntyre (+5) +4 thru 16

Robert MacIntyre records his second straight birdie on the 16th hole. Since shooting eight-over-par on his first four holes of the day, he's carded four birdies and no bogeys to get back under the cut line.

Gabby Herzig

Rory with a rare highlight

T134: McIlroy (+12) +5 thru 14

Finally something goes right for Rory McIlroy. He was so far deep in the 14th hole greenside bunker you could barely see his shoulders peeking out over its edge. But McIlroy blasted it out of the sand and holed out for birdie. When it fell over the lip of the cup all McIlroy could do was smile, and immediately donate his ball into the gallery.

It's been a long two days for the four-time major champion. He'll be packing up from Royal Troon early, but it seemed as though the hole-out provided at least a moment of relief.

Rahm making a move

Rahm making a move

T11: Rahm (E) -2 thru 15

The word NBC's commentators have used over and over to describe Jon Rahm's performance today is "patient." He hasn't forced anything, instead accepting what the course has given him. After shooting even par on the front nine, he's now recorded back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to get to even for the tournament.

Hatton attempts to make up for poor shot

Great anecdote from the NBC broadcast just now: Tyrrell Hatton carried his own bag down the 12 fairway. He apparently told his caddie that he had hit the ball so poorly that no one else but him deserved to have to carry the thing around.

Niemann bounces back in a big way

Niemann bounces back in a big way

T11: Niemann (E) E thru 15

Joaquin Niemann appeared to have ruined his tournament when he carded a quintuple bogey on the par-three eighth hole, but he's nearly recovered all five of those strokes. Birdies on 10, 12, 14 and 15 have gotten him back to even par for the tournament.

DeChambeau at risk of being cut

DeChambeau at risk of being cut

T95: DeChambeau (+8) +3 thru 12

Bryson DeChambeau was sitting right at the cut line at six-over-par as he turned to the back nine, but two bogeys in the next three holes has him at risk of missing the weekend. Things could have been worse, though, as he avoided a double bogey on 12 by rolling in a 24-foot putt.

Brody Miller

Rose's round in perspective

Of all groups that teed off at 11:15am or later today, Justin Rose is the only golfer under par for the tournament.

Thomas caps up-and-down round

Thomas caps up-and-down round

T39: Thomas (+4) 78

Justin Thomas followed yesterday's 68 with a 78 today, but that doesn't tell the full story. He shot a 45 on the front nine today, seemingly headed towards missing the cut line, but followed that with a 33 on the back nine to bounce back and secure weekend golf.

Rose manifested this

Rose manifested this

It's hard to put into words how good that round was from 43-year-old Justin Rose. He beat the field average by 8 shots and holed one more birdie on the 18th to make it extra sweet.

Rose put himself in contention to win after the Saturday round of this year's PGA Championship and spoke about wanting to give himself "the Indian summer" of his career. It looks like he's very much carrying out that mission.
