Introduction

Welcome to our guide on how to download videos on Mac from websites. We understand that sometimes you come across great videos online that you’d love to have access to even when you’re offline. Whether it’s a tutorial, a music video, a funny clip, or a documentary, being able to download videos from websites can be incredibly useful.

In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step process to help you download videos on your Mac. We’ll show you how to find the video you want, install a video downloader tool, copy and paste the video URL, choose the desired video format and quality, start the download process, and locate the downloaded video on your Mac.

Downloading videos from websites can give you the flexibility to watch them whenever you want, without the need for internet access. Whether you want to save videos for offline viewing during a long flight or simply want a local copy of your favorite videos, these steps will help you achieve that.

There are different video downloader tools available for Mac, each with its own features and functions. We will guide you through the general steps using a popular video downloader, but please note that the specific steps may vary depending on the software you choose to use.

So, if you’re ready to learn how to download videos on Mac from websites, let’s get started with the first step: finding the video you want to download.

Step 1: Find the video you want to download

The first step in downloading a video on your Mac is to find the video you want to download from a website. This can be a video-sharing platform, a media streaming site, or any website that hosts videos.

The key is to navigate to the webpage where the video is located. This can be done by using a web browser, such as Safari or Google Chrome, and typing the website’s URL into the address bar. Alternatively, you can use a search engine to find the specific webpage that contains the desired video.

Once you have landed on the webpage, take a moment to locate the video. Videos are usually embedded on the webpage and can be easily spotted by their play buttons or video thumbnails.

Scroll through the page and visually identify the video you want to download. Keep in mind that some webpages may contain multiple videos, so be sure to choose the correct one.

If you are having trouble finding the video, you can also try using the search feature within the website to look for the specific video by title or keywords associated with it.

It’s important to note that not all websites allow video downloads. Some websites have restrictions or copyright policies that prevent users from downloading their videos. Make sure you are aware of the website’s terms of use or copyright policies before proceeding with the download.

Once you have successfully located the video you want to download, you are ready to move on to the next step: installing a video downloader tool on your Mac.

Step 2: Install a video downloader tool

In order to download videos on your Mac, you’ll need to have a video downloader tool installed. There are various video downloader software options available, both free and paid, that you can choose from based on your preferences and requirements.

One popular option is to use a browser extension specifically designed for video downloading. These extensions add a download button or a video download option directly to your browser’s toolbar, making it convenient to save videos with just a few clicks.

To install a video downloader extension, follow these steps:

  • Open the browser of your choice, such as Safari or Google Chrome.
  • Visit the browser’s respective extension store, such as the Chrome Web Store for Google Chrome or Safari Extensions website for Safari.
  • Search for a video downloader extension by typing relevant keywords like “video downloader” in the search bar.
  • Browse through the available options and read the reviews and descriptions to choose a reliable and well-rated one.
  • Click on the “Add” or “Install” button to begin the installation process.
  • Follow any on-screen instructions that may appear during the installation.

Once the extension is successfully installed, you will usually see a small icon or a download button in your browser’s toolbar, indicating that the video downloader tool is ready to use.

Alternatively, if you prefer to use standalone video downloader software, you can search online for options that are compatible with Mac operating systems. Visit the official website of the software you choose, download the installation file, and follow the installation instructions provided.

Make sure to download the software or extension from reputable sources to ensure the safety and reliability of the tool.

With a video downloader tool successfully installed on your Mac, you’re now ready to move on to the next step: launching the video downloader.

Step 3: Launch the video downloader

After installing a video downloader on your Mac, it’s time to launch the application or activate the browser extension. This step is crucial as it allows you to access the video downloading functionality and prepare for the next steps.

If you have installed a browser extension, simply open your web browser and navigate to the webpage containing the video you want to download. The video downloader extension should now be active and visible in your browser’s toolbar.

Click on the video downloader extension icon or button to open its interface. This will typically display various options or settings related to video downloads. Make sure you familiarize yourself with these options as they may affect the format, quality, or location of the downloaded video.

If you have installed standalone video downloader software, locate the application on your Mac. This can be done by searching in your Applications folder or by using the search function on your operating system.

Launch the video downloader software by double-clicking on its icon. Once the application is open, you will usually see a user-friendly interface with different features and functions specifically designed for video downloading.

Take a moment to explore the video downloader’s interface and become familiar with its layout and options. This will help you navigate through the download process more efficiently.

Some video downloaders may require you to log in with your credentials or create an account before you can start using them. If prompted, follow the instructions provided by the software or extension to log in or sign up.

With the video downloader launched and ready, you’re now ready to proceed to the next step: copying and pasting the video URL.

Step 4: Copy and paste the video URL

Now that you have launched the video downloader tool on your Mac, it’s time to copy and paste the URL of the video you want to download. This step is essential as it provides the video downloader with the necessary information to locate and retrieve the video file.

Begin by opening your web browser and navigating to the webpage containing the video. Once you are on the page, locate the URL or web address in the address bar at the top of the browser window.

Select the entire URL by clicking and dragging your cursor over it, or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl/Cmd + A) to select the entire URL. Once selected, right-click on the URL and choose the “Copy” option.

With the video URL copied to your clipboard, go back to the video downloader tool you launched earlier. Look for a designated field or box where you can paste the URL. This is usually labeled as “Paste URL” or “URL input.”

Right-click inside the URL field and select the “Paste” option to insert the copied video URL. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl/Cmd + V) to paste the URL into the field.

Make sure to double-check the pasted URL for accuracy, as any discrepancies or errors may result in the video downloader being unable to locate the video.

Once you have successfully pasted the video URL into the appropriate field, the video downloader will typically display the video’s details, such as its title, duration, and available formats or quality options.

Depending on the video downloader software or extension you are using, you may have the flexibility to choose the desired format and quality before initiating the download. Review the available options and select the most suitable settings based on your preferences.

With the video URL successfully copied and pasted into the video downloader, you are now ready to proceed to the next step: choosing the desired video format and quality.

Step 5: Choose the desired video format and quality

After pasting the video URL into the video downloader tool, it’s time to select the desired video format and quality. This step allows you to customize the download settings according to your preferences and requirements.

Depending on the video downloader software or extension you are using, you will typically have a range of video formats and quality options to choose from. These options may include popular formats such as MP4, AVI, or FLV, as well as different quality levels such as high-definition (HD) or standard-definition (SD).

Take a moment to review the available video formats and quality settings provided by the video downloader. Consider factors such as file size, compatibility with media players or devices, and your desired viewing experience.

If there are multiple format options available, select the one that best suits your needs. Keep in mind that different formats may have different compatibility requirements and may offer varying levels of video and audio quality.

Similarly, if there are different quality options available for the selected format, choose the one that meets your expectations. Higher-quality settings usually result in larger file sizes, while lower-quality settings may sacrifice some video and audio clarity.

In addition to format and quality, some video downloaders may offer advanced options such as subtitle selection or audio track preferences. If these options are applicable to your video, take the time to adjust them according to your preferences.

Remember that the video format and quality options may depend on the source website and the video itself. If a specific format or quality is not available for your desired video, it may not be supported or provided by that particular website.

Make sure to select the format and quality settings that best suit your needs and preferences. Once you are satisfied with your selections, you’re now ready to move on to the next step: starting the download process.

Step 6: Start the download process

With the desired video format and quality selected, it’s time to initiate the download process and start downloading the video to your Mac. This step will differ slightly depending on the video downloader software or extension you are using, but the general process remains the same.

Look for a button or option within the video downloader interface that allows you to start the download. This is usually labeled as “Download,” “Start,” or a similar term.

Click on the download button to begin the process. The video downloader will start retrieving the video file from the provided URL and initiate the download to your specified location on your Mac.

During the download process, you may see an indication of the progress, such as a progress bar or a percentage completion status. This will give you an idea of how long the download will take to complete.

Depending on the size of the video file and your internet connection speed, the download process may take a few seconds to several minutes. Patience is key as the video downloader works in the background to retrieve and save the video file on your Mac.

It’s essential to ensure a stable internet connection during the download process. Interruptions or sudden disconnections may result in incomplete downloads or errors. If you encounter any issues during the download, double-check your internet connection and try restarting the download if necessary.

Once the download is complete, the video downloader will usually provide a notification or indicator to let you know. You can then proceed to the next and final step: locating the downloaded video on your Mac.

Keep in mind that the download speed and the process may vary depending on various factors, such as your internet connection, the size of the video file, and the capabilities of the video downloader tool.

Now that the download process is underway, let’s move on to the final step: locating the downloaded video on your Mac.

Step 7: Locate the downloaded video on your Mac

After successfully downloading the video to your Mac, the final step is to locate the downloaded video file. This step allows you to access and enjoy the video offline at your convenience.

The exact location of the downloaded video will depend on the settings and preferences you have specified in the video downloader or the default download location on your Mac.

To locate the downloaded video, follow these general steps:

  • Open the Finder on your Mac by clicking on the Finder icon in the dock or using the Command + Spacebar shortcut and typing “Finder.”
  • In the Finder window, look for a section or sidebar category labeled “Downloads.” Click on it to open the Downloads folder.
  • If you have set a different download location or specified a custom folder for the downloaded videos, navigate to that folder within the Finder.
  • Scan through the listed files or use the search bar in the top-right corner of the Finder window to search for the video by its file name or extension.
  • Once you have located the video file, double-click on it to open and play it with your preferred media player on your Mac.

If you are unable to find the video in the Downloads folder or the specified download location, check the settings of your video downloader tool and ensure that the correct destination folder has been selected. Alternatively, use the search function within the Finder to locate the video by its file name.

If you prefer to have your downloaded videos saved in a specific folder or location for easy access, you can customize the download settings within the video downloader to save the videos directly to that location.

Once you have located the downloaded video file, you can now enjoy it offline or transfer it to other devices for playback as desired.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed all the steps to download and locate a video on your Mac. With this knowledge, you can now download your favorite videos from websites and enjoy them whenever you want, without the need for an internet connection.

Easy Ways to Download Video in Safari

mac safari video download

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple in January of 2003. It is the native internet browser of all Apple PCs, mac books and iOS gadgets. Safari 7 is the latest version of this browser and was released to the public last June of 2013. Big improvements are noted with Safari 7 such as low memory use, revamped top site and sidebar interface, shared link feature, etc. Along with the improved and much stable Safari browser, video streaming has also gained wide popularity. Today, users can view the unlimited number of videos by simply connecting to the internet. From full-length movies, latest TV shows, funny clips, educational videos to all others, these things can be easily watched online. However, streaming clips online requires you to connect to the internet all the time.

To save your bandwidth and buffer waiting time, it is always best to download video content to your hard drive. With online videos saved on your PC, you can watch clips over and over again without the internet or get them for portable playback. How to download YouTube videos on a Mac

Karen Haslam

If the idea of a long car journey or bedtime without a connection to the internet leaves you trembling with fear, there’s a solution. You can download those YouTube videos your kids (or you) love to watch to play back offline. Making a copy of YouTube videos on an iPad or iPhone is really easy, but the same can’t be said if you want to save YouTube videos on your Mac.

The most curious thing about this particular issue is that YouTube allows YouTube videos to be downloaded to an iPad or iPhone (if you subscribe to YouTube Premium , $11.99/£11.99 a month, one-month free trial). The same is true of Disney, Netflix and Prime , who also allow downloads to mobile devices, but not the Mac. For some reason these services do not seem to want people to download anything to a Mac, perhaps this is because they offer apps for mobile devices and therefore have control over how those recordings are stored and how long they are available for (YouTube Premium only lets subscribers download video and music on to mobile devices, and it will only be available to watch offline for 30 days, for example).

Since there are no apps for YouTube or the other streaming services on the Mac, the content owners won’t have control over how the recordings are used. Obviously the solution would be for Mac versions of the apps to be offered, but as yet this hasn’t happened.

Download YouTube Videos for Free – EaseUS Video Downloader

However, just because YouTube doesn’t make it easy to download YouTube videos on a Mac doesn’t mean you can’t. Apple makes it possible to screen capture what is playing on your Mac, so ripping a YouTube video with the audio on to your Mac is not too much of a challenge. We’ll run though this process below.

There are also free and paid for apps that will also do this for you with a little more finesse, and we will include some of these options below too. In our experience the free apps are usually more trouble than they are worth and potentially dangerous. (If you see a warning that you need to install Flash, for example, it really could be a scam, or at worse malware!)

Before we start, we have to point out that you should be aware of copyright issues. Firstly, you shouldn’t download someone else’s video and then, for example, upload it to your own YouTube channel or use it to promote your business. You should also note that downloading YouTube videos goes against YouTube’s terms of service. The company specifies that “You shall not download any Content unless you see a ‘download’ or similar link displayed by YouTube.”

How to download YouTube videos on a Mac for free

It is really easy to download YouTube video for free with software that comes with your Mac. You don’t need to download an app at all. Since Mojave, macOS has had an in-built screen recording feature. You can capture what is playing on your screen and the audio. Just note that Mac mini doesn’t have an inbuilt microphone so you would need a microphone to capture audio if you are using a Mac mini.

Option 1: Screen capture with audio on a Mac

  • Press Command + Shift + 5.
  • Click on Record selected portion.

Record YouTube

  • Click Options and make sure your microphone is selected.
  • Click Record.
  • Now start playing the video.
  • Wait for it to finish and then stop the video. To stop the screen recording (you’ll find a stop button in the menu at the top of the screen or in the box as seen in the image below.)

Screen recording

This is without a doubt the best way to record from YouTube on a Mac. However, a short video can take up a lot of space on your Mac, and obviously it is necessary to wait while the whole video plays through.

Option 2: Record the screen using QuickTime

Before Apple merged the tools for screen recording with the screen grab tools in macOS Mojave, Mac users could use QuickTime to record the screen on their Mac. Since Monterey, if you try to screen capture using QuickTime it just defaults to the same tools as are offered by Command + Shift + 5, however, if you have an older version of macOS this is how it works:

  • Open QuickTime Player (press Command + Space and start typing QuickTime).
  • Go to the menu at the top of the screen and choose File > New Screen Recording.

QuickTime record YouTube

  • Click on the red button.

QuickTime recording Mac

  • Now click on Record.
  • Start the YouTube video playing (make sure the sound is on).
  • Once the YouTube video has played you can click on the stop button in the menu at the top of the screen.
  • The video will open so you can check it before saving it.

Best apps to download YouTube video

There are also some solutions on offer that will download the YouTube video for you, rather than you have to record the screen of your Mac while playing the video. This might be a preferred option if you don’t have the time to sit and wait for an hour of Peppa Pig to play. It should also result in much smaller file sizes.

Downie Download YouTube Video

$20, 14-day trial Download Downie

Downie from developer Charlie Monroe costs $20 and can be used to download and save video from thousands of websites.

When you start up the app you can make various tweaks, to, for example, always download best quality, force MP4 format, and perform post-processing. Downie is available as a browser extension for Firefox, Safari and Chrome, but you can just drag and drop a link from a browser onto Downie in the Dock or it’s download window, and download the video. You can even choose the relevant subtitles.

The download of a 30 minute view took seconds and the resulting video looked excellent quality and only took 77MB space on our Mac.

It includes a free 14-day trial.

EaseUS Video Downloader

EaseUS Video Downloader

  • $19.99 a month (currently $12.99), free trial
  • Download EaseUS

EaseUS’s video downloaded is simple to use. Once the app is installed you can view content on a number of popular video hosting sites, including YouTube, and we were able to download videos (although we did find a few we couldn’t download).

There were four download options that indicated what the file size would be. It is also possible to just download audio as an MP3.

The software indicated how long the download would take and counted down the seconds remaining. We could hear the video playing in the background, but couldn’t see it. Once downloaded the video was saved to our Documents folder where we could play it.

The free trial lets you download two items.

Parallels ToolBox

Parallels Tool Box record YouTube

  • $19.99/£15.99 a year, 7-day trial
  • Download Parallels Toolbox

On the basis that going with a well-known company means you are more likely not to end up with at best bad software, at worse malware on your Mac, we’ll look at Parallels ToolBox.

Parallels (the people behind the software that makes it easy to run Windows on your Mac ) have come up with a number of tools that can be used to simplify a number of tasks on your Mac. ToolBox is the result of their experience manning a help desk for their customers running Parallels on a Mac. So many customers phoned up asking how to do various things that Parallels thought some easy to use tools might be a good solution. And so Parallels Toolbox was born.

  • Once you have download and installed Parallels Toolbox you’ll see a toolbox icon in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on that.
  • You’ll see a number of tools including Airplane Mode, Free Memory, Do Not Disturb, Make Gif, and Download Video. Click on Download Video.
  • Toolbox will instruct you that you need to enable a Safari extension in order to download video. Click Enable.

Downloading YouTube video Mac

  • Once the download has finished you will find the video file in your Downloads folder (which might not be immediately obvious).

The file will be saved as an MPEG-4 movie. It will open and play in QuickTime on your Mac.

If you are looking for an easy way to get the video onto an iPad or iPhone one solution would be to copy the video onto iCloud so you can access it from the Files app. You can then download it from there and play it whenever you want. We have more details about saving a YouTube video to an iPhone or iPad .

iTubeDownloader

How to download YouTube videos to Mac: iTubeDownloader

  • $8.99 (about £7)
  • Download iTubeDownloader

iTubeDownloader charges a fee – it’s $8.99 for the activation code, and students can get 35% off – but there’s a free trial that may be sufficient for your needs.

It looks like a browser, but it automatically directs you to YouTube’s home page. You then browse the site as normal, except that there’s now a big Download button next to the URL bar. Tap this at any point to grab the video you’re currently viewing (or the video whose URL you’ve pasted into the address bar).

We found it easy to use iTubeDownloader when we first tried it our in 2019, and the resultant download was of a good quality. Unfortunately when we tried it out again in 2022 we were unable to download anything. A list of reasons were given.

When it does work, you get a choice of download quality settings. The only downside, really, is that it isn’t free beyond the terms of the trial.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to download web & flash videos to a mac with the safari activity monitor trick.

safari-icon

This should works to download any web video so long as it gets loaded into the Safari browser or cache, but you should be certain to only use this on video content that specifically allows for sharing and for such downloading for offline usage – not all movie and video content on the web has that license and it’s important for you to determine that on your own.

OK without further adieu, here are the steps he Robert provided us to download and save web video or flash files to Mac OS X:

  • Launch an independent Safari window with the video you want to download
  • Press Command+Option+A , or go to Windows > Activity to bring up the ‘Activity Monitor’ window in Safari
  • Look through the activity for “Video Name”, look for the largest file size and double click to download it

download web video

  • Find the file that you downloaded (usually named get_video or videoplayback.flv) in the Finder and edit the name so that it has a .flv file extension
  • Confirm the file extension change, and now you can watch the downloaded movie in VLC or Perian equipped QuickTime

Robert also tells us that this should work in the Windows version of Safari but I can’t confirm that. Thanks for the tip Robert!

If you want to download songs tracks from video there’s an easy way to do just that too, using an app that extracts the audio track from the video file in question.

I think I’ve found a way to download these YouTube segmented files. In Safari turn on the Develop menu from the Preferences/Advanced. Go to Develop/Show Page Resources, refresh the YT page and wait until the ‘Other’ folder appears in the left hand panel. Select that and look inside for a series of items starting with playback. Select one of them. On the right hand panel copy the full URL listed at the top. Paste that into an address bar, then scroll along until you find a section starting &range=. Delete that section up to but not including the next & sign. This is now a link to the complete file. On the Mac I then click alt+enter and the file downloads.

i updated my Mac and now the activity feature has vanished. Does anyone know how to download videos without the use of “activity”???

Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Download and Convert YouTube FLV, F4V, WebM to Mac format

You will find a detailed guide on how to download as well as convert YouTube to Mac format so as to play YouTube on Mac QuickTime or iTunes, edit YouTube on Mac Final Cut Pro X/Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Express/iMovie; transfer YouTube to iPod/iPhone/iPad for playback on the go. Edit/Delete Message

You can do this. Most likely, it’s a flash file that’s playing, even though it can be converted to an HTML5. ‘right’ click on the flash player or video playing to bring up flash menu settings (3rd from the bottom indicated by “… additional options”, a small window with 5 or folders or tabs appears. The middle folder has an option slider to set how much access flash has to store on your computer. Set this to unlimited. Now you should see in the activity window the file uploading, a large downloading file. Some of you haven’t seen this. You don’t need additional programs to download files that are converted to HTML5. if you command click that file, or command double click depending on your settings, the video will open in a new tab or window. You’ll notice the video is now playing in Apples native HTML5 format. Insert your cursor at the end of the address field, for those using Safari 6 you have a simplified address bar, and once it’s there press option+enter. Now you see the video downloading at the download shortcut link in the upper righthand corner.

when i download it and find it in my finder and rename then press play it says it cannot be opened bcuz the video format is not recognized. helpppp :(

P.s. It’s not just YouTube.

I have two mac pros, one has Lion and one has snow leopard.

Snow leopard wouldn’t download all files types – I think that it would open a new window to display the mp4, and never actually download the file. Like forced streaming.

Lion used to download all file types. But, since the update, it acts like snow leopard did.

I might look what benefits I got from the last Lion update (I think there might’ve been something actually useful in it), and consider if I can remove the update.

Is it just my computer? Lion was fine for downloading at first. Since updating Lion, I find that ALL YOUTUBE FILES ARE 1.7Mb, in the activity window.

They were never going to work.

My mac is happy that they are flv, and automatically associates with them.

I don’t get any error message of any description. Just a 1.7mb video file, that has no play time at all. Not a black screen, nothing.

[…] you can download Flash videos to your Mac with just Safari, but Evom is nice because it will also convert the video file for you to a format […]

This doesn’t work for me. It downloads fine, but when I try to open it (it has the .flv extension), QuickTime tells me that it can’t open an .flv file?

this method can’t be used now

my problem is i cant find the goddamn large file size in the activity window, only small ones

Same here. I think the problem is actually not a problem. In OSX Lion this is fixed. I used to be able to download on Snow Leopard. Maybe youtube had a word with apple or some …

As above posters have noted, this method doesn’t work now. Perhaps it used to. For me, double-clicking on the file in Activity Monitor doesn’t download it, it just opens a new Safari window with just the flash video in the center and plays it. No downloading possible.

As far as I can see this doesn’t work any more (used to) – if anyone has any other tricks for downloading up their sleeves please let us know.

Following the Safari download process I get to the point where I see the video playback file with the .flv extension, but when I go to play it it gives the following error response… ‘main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `undf’. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.’

What have I missed?

I think the issue lies with Flash. I was able to download full length videos from YouTube until yesterday when I “upgraded” to the newest version of Flash Player – 11.1.102.62. Since then, the stream is no longer seamless, but a series of fractional files 1.7 – 2.3 megs in size – depending on what’s being downloaded.

Flash Wars – the revenge of the Warnock.

I think there is a new problem with this. The activity window is now displaying an flv file 2.3 MB size and there are several of these files in the activity window. If you download any of those none will be readable. I tried different videos and all are displaying the same patterns of several fly files 2.3 MB size. I think there was a recent change in the play system on Youtube. Have anyone found a workaround on this issue? In the past it worked perfectly but now all the files I download cannot be played…. Thanks in advance for the response.

all existing methods in the article and user comments did not work. I leave a window for the video buffer from youtube. I opened the activity pane (Cmd + Opt + A) and look for the video size 603mb. when double-clicked, will open a new window. when clicked two times while pressing the OPT, the download is running. but do I have to repeat and spent many hours to download files from servers that have been cached on my computer? I prefer to use keepvid.net now.

thanks . this was very helpful

Thank u so much very helpful .

[…] Källa: OSXDaily […]

This method will work, but not for the HD version of video. I use moviesherlock – it gives me 1080 version and it can rip off mp3 from youtube! Well, knowing-how to do it with just a browser – this cool

It works! Thanks :D

You can do this using the Windows version of Safari and Firefox.

1. Go to the activity window, and find the file which is actively increasing in size.

2. Double click that file. It will open in a new Safari window.

3. Copy the path from the Safari window.

4. Open Firefox. Paste the path in Firefox

5. In Firefox, File –> Save as. You will be prompted to save the file. In my case, I saved a Vimeo file and it defaulted to .mp4.

This method by RL still works as of today with OSX version of Firefox — only difference is that it will start playing in the firefox window so just go to file .. save as and you can save the video file. Works fine.

Keepvid.com and Wantyoutube.com are the webpages I use. I’ll try this one! Thanks!

when i double click on the largest file it is not open in activity it is open with quick plug in , what to do?

will try what fray says TY

seems as of today I can no longer get this function to work. WHAT have they done aaaargh

I combined this tutorial and one from another site. This has worked every time for me:

1. Launch an independent Safari window with the YouTube video you want to download.

2. Press “Command + Option + A”, or go to Windows > Activity to bring up the ‘Activity Monitor’ window in Safari.

3. Click on the little arrow to look through the activity for “YouTube – Video Name” (or vise versa) and do one of two things: Look for the address of the file that has numbers (Ex: http://74.125.4.38 ), or look for the largest file size (usually 1 MB or more) and double-click on it to download it. If double-clicking doesn’t work (and a lot of times it doesn’t), do the following instead:

* Click on the line of the video in the “activity window” (the one with the largest file size as mentioned previously). * Click on the keys “Apple + C” to copy the file. * Open the download window (“Window > Downloads”). * Paste the file via “Apple + V”. * Your video should start downloading in the “Downloads” window.

4. Locate the file that you downloaded (it’s usually named “get_video” or “videoplayback”) and edit its name so that it has a “.flv” file extension.
(Ex: johnsparty.flv)

5. Confirm the file extension change in the window that pops up and watch the downloaded movie in either VLC or QuickTime equipped with Perian.

@Fray: This works perfectly for me on Lion OSX 10.7.1/Safari 5.1. Thank you.

I’ve been using the usual activity window and double clicking on the largest file size for years but attempting to save a HD file this way no longer worked (maybe Safari/Apple updates) but copying and pasting in the download window has worked perfectly. Thank you for posting your way around and helping out those that thought it was no longer possible.

How do you get iMovie to open the file you downloaded? Even though the extension is .flv/.mov it won’t open it.

Thanks, Paul – I was hoping that the Flash I downloaded last night would open it, but I can’t seem to get the plug-in and the movie together.

Will download VLC – that’s what MacLife mag recommends, too. Great minds . . .

VLC opens just about any video file, it’s a great app and quite powerful, plus it’s free!

With JoshWED’s tip it downloaded a treat. I’m running Lion 10.7.1 and found “videoplayback.flv” in the downloads folder, but it won’t open (“the movie’s file format isn’t recognized”).

Any way to fix that? Thanks.

You just need something to open FLV files, try using VLC

omg all you need is to hold down the option button. Thank you JOSH!

JoshWED’s trick worked…

simply holding down Option and double click.

It’ll ask to save the file.

Thank you so much, you are awesome.

STOP BEING SO AWSOME!

What if its a large file? I’ve been doing this method for a while but now I want to download a 1hr30min full length gig and when you double click it it just opens the video in a new window. Any suggestions?

Used to work but not anymore. Safari and Youtube must have banded together to “fix” the “problem”

It seems that only some youtube clips aren’t downloadable using this method. I still manage to download some clips like this, but a few just don’t work.

Maybe it’s just newer clips that have been added.

I’ve got latest safari and it’s working, though not always like it used to. Simple fix when you’re getting the “new window”: hold option and then double-click. Should download after that. I noticed this was happening when it wasn’t an flv..but an mp extension.

Thanks mate! That’s awesome – totally works now :D

It worked fine for me till two days ago. Now another window opens up with an address beginning http://o-o .. – I tried pressing option while double clicking but to no avail, I just get no response at all.

I have had the same problem. I was able to download one video successfully using this method and now I just get the new window. Any luck finding a work-around?

I found a solution… I was able to download one video using the double click method, then I kept getting the new window. All I did was hold option, then double click on the file in the activity window and it downloaded again. Then, when you look in your downloads to find the “playback” file, you change the extension on it to “.flv”, andthen you can watch in quicktime if you have perian installed.

Dude! you rock! this is the only thing that worked for me, thanks! =D

Oh finally! OPTION + double-click works perfectly.

I’m glad I don’t have to use an extension/plugin.

Alternatively, use ClicktoPlugin to force and download HTML5/.m4v content, rather than Flash.

what seems to be happening is that youtube has found a way to defeat the safari activity window trick by downloading clips in many small clips- they all seem connected when you watch it on youtube- but obviously that’s not the case when you try to extract it from safari- This is why when you watch on youtube you won’t see the video buffer as in the past.

I just successfully downloaded youtube video in Safari, and it does work! Follow these instructions explicitly: 1. Go to the activity window, and find the file which is actively increasing in size. 2. Double click that file. then look in your downloads window. You will see it is downloading. 3. When it is finished downloading, you can find the file by doing either of the following; a. find the file in your downloads folder b. click the magnifying glass in the download window to take you to the file. 4. What you find is a file called “videoplayback” which has no file extension. 5. Rename as you like and add .flv as the file extension. 6. Test the file in VLC or Adobe video player. That is what works for me. (-;

I am a novice at this, but was able to download a movie clip from Youtube per your instructions, so thanks! Any way I can burn it to a DVD? The file extensions when downloaded was html. I didn’t change it, but it played on my computer. Again, I’m a novice…

same here, stopped. does not work anymore just opens another player window with the video scaled down .

Adding ‘&fmt=18’ as mentioned above makes no diff here unfortunately .

Yeah, I also face the same problem as Boomslang. It worked perfectly before until I upgrade the OS. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

I have two OS 10.6 Macs, On the one this method works 100%.

BUT on the other it also opens the video in a new window.

I’ve tried to removed Safari and re-install. This option doesn’t work. Any ideas?

it’s not working for me I have mac os 10.6 help! please!

Does not work anymore. Now a new window will pop up with a player interface. They must have fixed it. Why is there no plug in like Easy Youtube Downloader for Firefox?

What to download video from a site youtube I use service takeyoutube.com

I use firefox add-on called “Easy Youtube downloader” which works much better and more elegantly. Also another is the “Video Download Helper”.

[…] you can download YouTube videos to your Mac with just Safari, but Evom is nice because it will also convert the video file for you to a format […]

When i open the activity windows, instead of one large file, i saw afew of similar file.

When i download it, it is parts of the video… not the whole video. what should i do?

This works for me in Leopard on a G4:

1. Navigate to a YouTube video. 2. Add “&fmt=18” (without the quotation marks) to the URL and press Return. This loads a Quicktime / MP4 version of the video file. 3. Open the Activity Manager and look for the huge file. 4. Option-double-click that file. 5. It appears as videoplayback.mp4 in my Downloads folder.

For Windows, I believe that I heard Control-double-click is the equivalent.

These .mp4 files will not always transfer to an iPod. To fix that problem, I downloaded Miro Video Convertor, which is free and open source. http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/

I run the downloaded files through MVC, and they work on my iPod Video.

This trick also works for Flash videos, like the cartoons on the Vimeo videos that have downloads prohibited.

I could not find the Beavis & Butt-head videos on MTV’s website with this trick. No huge file appeared in the Activity Manager.

Thanks, I’ve been looking FOREVER on how to do this. Previous methods haven’t worked for me, but this works!

wow thanks at least someone knows what they’re talking about.

This sequence of actions does not work for me. Double – clicking an item in the Activity Window opens it in a new Safari window, by itself, but doesn’t ‘download’ it at all.

The same thing happens for me. Did you find any solutions?

I have got the same problem too? Tell me the solutions please! Actually after double-clicking an item in the activity window does not “download”. A window opens and begin to “loading”….

If you are using OS X v10.7 Lion you need to hold the ‘Option’ key down when you double click in the Activity window.

Thanks Alan. Holding down Option and double clicking in the Activity Window works for me using Lion 10.7.2

Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! Thankyou!!! Holding down option key totally worked!

[…] Enkel nedlastning av youtube i Safari 31 mai, 2010 Arkivert under: mac — eat1 @ 10:29 pm Tags: dataverktøy Ganske enkelt å bare gjøre det direkte i Safari. Sjekk ut denne guiden […]

You have to make sure you double click the item in the activity window and it will then automatically download to your safari downloads folder.

GlimmerBlocker (glimmerblocker.org) is an advanced ad-blocker which ads a download link to all YouTube movies. No need to open the Activity window, just click ‘download’ below the movie.

Where in the Finder does one go to find this file? Stumped.

Mine Doesn’t it, just opens another window playing the video

If another window is opened, that means that the video is in mp4 format. What you should do is copy the address of the new window and paste it into the downloads window (Click in the downloads window and then press Ctrl-V to paste).

Just use keepvid.com. They offer different types of downloads as well I’ve seen, flv’s to mp4’s, different quality.

For mac without windows? Do you have a mac w/o parallels? And Keepvid.com works for you?

Keepvid.com maybe the easiest way to download YouTube videos, But to download YouTube videos with this site, it will ask you to “download Java” to your Mac. In comparison of these youtube downloading sites or free apps, I would choose Zamzar.com or enolsoft free youtube downloader hd for mac.

Or you will get error when downloading videos from Safari. So the security way to download video from Safari is to get help from Video DownloaderHelper for Safari .

[Tips]: Problems encountered when downloading videos in Safari

Downloading videos from the Internet is a big part of the internet experience; but often you cannot download videos directly from your Safari browser. Sure, you can opt to stream videos online, but streaming requires that you be connected to the internet all the times, which may not be realistic. Downloading videos is also a great solution when you have a slow internet connection that leads to long periods of video buffering. There are some common issues users face when downloading videos from the Safari browser directly such as:

Problem 1. Saves in the wrong format

When trying to save video files directly using Safari, the window brings up a "save as" option and once downloaded it becomes a .webarchive file as opposed to a .mp4 or .mov file as preferred.

Problem 2. Requires built-in-apps

Unlike other files you can probably download into built in apps like e-books, e-PUBs, and PDF files, videos don't usually download into in-built video apps when using Safari. This is especially a problem when using iOS.

Problem 3. It's not an obvious feature

It is possible to download by clicking on the "window" tab, followed by the "activity" tab and double-clicking the largest file. However this is not available in Safari 8.0 or other newer updates and it's not as immediately obvious to the user as a "download" tab.

Problem 4. More often than not, you can't download videos from Safari

Download videos directly from Safari may not be possible at all. You may require third party tools such as apps, some add-on's or converters to do it. As such, more often than not, it's not an good option.

Video DownloadHelper is an online video download addon that is exclusive for Mozilla Firefox. It can help you download videos from 1000 plus video sites, for totally free. It's extremely easy to download video with Video DownloadHelper plugin. When it detects videos on a web page, its icon will start rotating. Just click it to save your desired video to your computer. [Tips]: Troubleshooting on using DownloadHelper

Firefox Downloadhelper is an add-on that is useful for extracting web content. It is capable of detecting videos in your browser and it can be used to download videos onto your device. It is very helpful with the Firefox browser, but it is not available in other browsers like Safari. However, "Downloadhelper not working" is a common error and it can be very frustrating. Some issues with Downloadhelper include:

Problem 1. DownloadHelper does not work with YouTube

YouTube might sometimes block add-ons so you will no longer use DownloadHelper to capture YouTube videos but you need to get help from a third-party video downloader like iTube HD Video Downloader, which could download video with Youtube other other over 10000 sites.

Problem 2. Cannot disable DownloadHelper

You can go to the "Tools" tab and find "Add-ons". Then you can find the DownloadHelper in the Add-on list. Simply click "Disable and Uninstall" to disable it from your browser.

Problem 3. The Version of Firefox in Use

Sometimes with a new version of Firefox an older version of Downloadhelper is required for it to work. Similarly sometimes the Firefox version is too old for it to work with the version of Downloadhelper. The mismatch can be very frustrating.

Problem 4. Not Working with YouTube

YouTube is the most popular video sharing website with videos ranging from cat videos to science tutorials to the moon landing. So downloading videos from it is commonplace. Yet sometimes Downloadhelper will work for years and then suddenly stop working with YouTube due to compatibility issues with the website.

Problem 5. Troubleshooting may be too technical

Most internet users only have layman computer skills so when the need to troubleshoot Downloadhelper arises, they may only be able to do basic things like restarting their browser or updating the extension. Anything more complicated than that may leave them stumped.

Problem 6. Downloadhelper does not detect the video

Sometimes the video file is available on the browser but Downloadhelper does not detect the video and therefore doesn't offer the download option. Even with the latest versions of the browsers and the extensions, this could still happen.

Problem 7. Flash files may require conversion

When a file is in MPEG-4 format, once it's downloaded on an Apple device, you're set to watch it again offline. However if it's a Flash file you might need to convert it and when using Downloadhelper the conversion process is technical and may be difficult to execute. For more troubleshooting, go to DownloadHelper Not Working Fixed .

Conclusion:

Today we have discussed two solutions to download videos in Safari , one is iTube HD Video Downloader, the best DownloadHelper for Safari. Another is to download videos from Safari direcly. How to Download Safari 17 Beta for macOS Ventura and Monterey

Apple is now allowing Mac users running macOS Ventura and macOS Monterey to try out its latest Safari 17 browser before it officially launches alongside macOS Sonoma in the fall. Keep reading to learn what's new and how to download it.

What's New in Safari 17 for macOS

As of writing, Safari 17 for macOS Ventura and Monterey has reached its fourth beta. Not only is it snappier with faster search responsiveness, it also has more relevant search suggestions – and easier-to-read suggestions. Here's what else is new:

  • Locked Private Browsing : Private browsing windows in Safari can now be locked when not in use, and require secondary authentication via Touch ID or your Mac's password to unlock and access for added privacy.
  • One-Time Code AutoFill from Mail : One-time verification codes you receive in Apple Mail now autofill in Safari, making it easy to log in without leaving the browser.
  • Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection : URLs in ‌Safari 17‌ can be stripped of all tracking information appended to the end of the URL so that websites cannot track your browsing using URL identifiers.
  • Multi-Tab Selection : You can now select multiple open tabs at once to move them around the tab bar or create a Tab Group for them.
  • Favicons in the Favorites Bar : You can now identify sites in the Favorites bar more easily with favicons.
  • Privacy Protections for App Extensions : You can now set per-site privacy settings for app extensions in addition to web extensions.
  • Safari Profiles : Safari has gained a new feature called Profiles, which is designed to help keep your browsing separate for topics like Work, School, or Personal. Each profile gets its own icon and silos your history, Tab Groups, favorites, and cookies. You can even assign specific extensions to profiles to optimize your browsing experience based on the task at hand.

How to Install Safari 17 on macOS Ventura/Monterey

In an unexpected change for 2023, anyone who signs in to Apple's developer account website with their Apple ID gets access to developer beta releases as well , even if they are not a paying member of Apple's Developer Program. So if you're still interested in trying out Safari 17, simply follow the steps below.

Note that Safari 17 Beta 4 requires macOS Ventura 13.4 or macOS Monterey 12.5 to run , and that installing it will overwrite your current Safari version. Also, bear in mind that this is beta software , so you may potentially experience bugs and issues that negatively impact your browsing. Having said that, beta 4 is very stable in our experience.

  • Open Safari on your Mac and go to Apple's developer website .
  • Under "Sign in to Apple Developer," enter and submit your Apple ID and password using the arrow buttons, then if required, enter the two-factor authentication code sent to your Apple devices.
  • Now click through to the Safari Beta Downloads page .
  • Under Safari 17, click View Details , then click the Safari 17 Beta DMG link to download the installation package applicable to your macOS version.
  • Once the package is downloaded to your Mac, double-click it and follow the onscreen instructions to complete installation.

Wrapping Up

When Safari 17 is officially released to the public as part of macOS Sonoma, users can expect some additional features, including the ability to save your favorite websites to the Dock as streamlined Web Apps , as well as the ability to share website passwords and passkeys with trusted contacts.

I've long gone elsewhere too. There are quite a few websites that don't work on Safari. In fact I see a lot of organisations actively suggesting Chrome. Having said that the vast majority of web work for me is Chrome and FIrefox. Safari is probably 5%.

Last night, at 2AM in the night, I was on the bed and my phone made a sound, and that was the invitation for the beta of Safari 17 for my Mac on Monterey. However, I no longer install betas anymore, past are those days I tested every new beta with excitement while suffering the bugs and annoyances of using beta software. Nowadays I stay with the stable releases as much as I can. Thankfully, Safari keeps getting updates on older systems such as Monterey.

Name a website that doesn’t work with Safari. I use Safari all day long and have yet to run into a website that doesn’t work. Even government websites work these days.

Best Video Downloader for Mac in 2022

Best YouTube video downloader for Mac

The best video downloader for Mac is an app that balances quality, ease-of-use, and functionality. Possible contenders for the best video downloader for Mac are the 4K Video Downloader, YTD Video Downloader , and iTube HD Video Downloader.

There are many video-downloading tools available on the Internet, and it can be difficult to figure out which one is the best one for you. First and foremost, we must warn you that many such apps tend to cause more harm than good. A lot of video-downloading tools are filled with aggressive, misleading, and even potentially hazardous ads, and some of them may even be regarded as lower-level malware. Therefore, you must be careful when picking a good video-downloading app for your Mac. In this post, we will tell you about three such apps that we consider to be the best video downloaders for Mac computers. Those apps are the 4K Video Downloader, YTD Video Downloader, and iTube HD Video Downloader. The first tool that we will review here is YTD Video Downloader

YTD Video Downloader

YTD Video Downloader is a versatile app for downloading videos from YouTube, Daily Motion, Vevo, and even Facebook (as well as other popular video-sharing platforms). Compared to the other two suggestions on this page, this is a relatively lightweight app, and it’s best suited for users who don’t need any overly advanced features. The app has an intuitive (albeit, not particularly elegant) interface, that’s easy to use and lets you quickly make some adjustments to how the video would be downloaded. Here are the main features of the program:

mac safari video download

  • Playlist download – You can download entire playlists rather than single videos from YouTube, but this function is only available in the Pro version. The Pro version also lets you download multiple videos simultaneously.

Other than those two features, there isn’t much else to be said about YTD Video Downloader. The main perks of getting the paid version are that it lets you download an unlimited number of videos, that it lets you download videos directly in the format you prefer, and that it increases the download speed (4 times according to the app’s developers).

If you are interested in purchasing YTD Video Downloader, it would cost you $9.99 per month if you pay for a single month, or $47.76 for a two-year subscription, which equals $1.99/month. There’s also a 2-yer bundle plan which costs $95.76 ($3.99/month) and includes both the YTD Video Downloader and Vuze VPN.

The free version of the app is quite restrictive, mainly due to the one-video-per-day limitation, so we don’t recommend it. Also, its free version has pop-up ads that can be quite annoying. The free versions of the other two apps mentioned here also have ads, but ones that aren’t intrusive and can easily be ignored. For a video downloader with a good free version, check out the next section of this article.

Best free Mac video downloader

The best free video downloader for Mac is likely 4K Video Downloader – it’s a versatile downloader app with a good variety of advanced features. The reason we consider it to be the best free video downloader for Mac is its generous 30 videos-per-day limit.

The problem with most free video downloaders is that they are often linked to aggressive and potentially unsafe online-advertising campaigns. Also, many such free tools don’t function very well and/or gain extensive privileges on the Macs they get installed on – privileges that are used to gather user data and subsequently sell it to third parties, rather than improve the user experience.

There aren’t many quality video downloaders that have a functioning free version and, expectedly, the ones that do have an actual free variant would provide limited functionality. That said, our suggestion for the best free Mac video downloaders is an app called 4K Video Downloader.

4K Video Downloader

4K Video Downloader comes with a variety of features that can’t be found in most other apps of its type. As its name implies, this tool lets you download videos from YouTube and other popular video-sharing sites in 4K resolution. Furthermore, it even lets you download videos in 8K!

mac safari video download

Other features of this app include:

  • Subtitles download – 4K Video Downloader also lets you download subtitles together with the video you want in a language of your choosing (so long as subtitles in that language are available for the video). With the free version, you can download subtitles only when downloading single videos and not when downloading entire playlists or channels.
  • Playlist download – Instead of downloading a single video, you can download an entire YouTube playlist by using the playlist URL in the downloader app. Furthermore, 4K Video Downloader even lets you download the content of entire YouTube channels. The playlist limitation with the free version is that you cannot download playlists with more than 10 videos in them.

mac safari video download

Free vs Paid – 4K Video Downloader has a free and a paid version and, as expected, the free version has some limitations. However, many of the advanced features of the full version are also available in the free one. Also, as mentioned earlier, this is likely the free video downloader that has the most generous videos-per-day limit compared to other similar ads – each day, you can download up to 30 videos using the 4K Video Downloader.

There are two paid versions of 4K Video Downloader, and they are offered as one-time purchases – no subscriptions and monthly payments to use the paid versions of 4K Video Downloader! Both of the paid variants come with additional perks, such as the ability to download private YouTube content, import and export of URLs, simultaneous downloads, and no limits on single-video or playlist downloads, but the free version is solid as well.

If you’d like to try either of the paid versions, the first one of them, called Personal , costs $15 – this is not per month, six months, or a year – you just make a single payment and get to keep the app for good. The other paid version, Pro , costs $45. The main difference between the two versions is that Pro provides you with advanced features such as In-app YouTube Subscriptions, YouTube Premium HQ Audio, and Permitted Commercial Use.

iTube HD Video Downloader

iTube HD Video Downloader is another feature-packed video-downloading tool that, according to its creators, works with over 10,000 video-sharing sites, including popular ones like YouTube, Amazon, and Vimeo. Rather than just letting you download videos from YouTube and converting them to the desired format, iTube functions as an app with multiple purposes, video-downloading being only one of them. The interface of the app is split into several tabs, each of them corresponding to one of iTube’s core functions.

mac safari video download

As you can see, the free version of iTube is highly restrictive, so you may want to either use the 4K Video Downloader instead if you want a free app with better functionality or upgrade to the paid iTube variant. There are three payment options here – the first one costs $24.95 for a one-year subscription. The second one is a lifetime license that costs $34.95 and is, in our opinion, the best of the three plans. The third option is a family license – it, too, is a lifetime license, and it can be used on up to 5 Macs. There’s also an option to buy a license for a larger number of Macs, but that option is for commercial use of the app.

Best overall video downloader for Mac

The best overall video downloader for Mac is, in our opinion, the 4K Video Downloader due to its great free version, unintrusive interface, and variety of features. Another reason we consider 4K to be the best overall video downloader for Mac is its one-time purchase policy.

If you are looking for a lightweight video downloader tool with some basic functions that can still let you quickly download videos and playlists from popular video-sharing sites, YTD Video Downloader is a good choice, though not particularly impressive in any specific aspect.

For users who are looking for a more advanced video downloader that doubles as a screen-recording tool and that can be easily integrated into Chrome and Firefox for one-click video downloads, iTube Video Downloader is a great option for Mac users.

For those looking for an all-around video-downloading tool with a satisfying number of extra features, a great free version, and an unintrusive design, you should give a try to 4K Video Downloader, which is currently our favorite video-downloading tool for Mac.

Great review, sounds very unbiased. The ‘why you don’t need this feature with Mac/Apple devices’ are very useful, as are the downsides of free versions. I’m going with your recommendation of 4K PRO. Many thanks!

How to Download Videos From Safari on iPhone and iPad

Darryl Dsouza

While on the internet, we often come across videos that we would like to save for offline viewing or sharing. However, downloading videos from the Safari browser is challenging. Also, most social media websites (where many users come across these videos) lack a built-in option to download videos nor allow users to download videos.

We’ve compiled a guide to help you learn how to download videos from Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Also remember that while you can download videos from the internet, make sure it is for personal use and refrain from sharing elsewhere. We’ll talk more about this, later in the article.

Steps to Download Videos From Safari on iPhone and iPad

Please ensure that you only download videos from websites that allow users to download videos. Planning to repurpose the content? Before doing that check whether the videos are royalty free. All I’m trying to convey is that avoid trouble by following the legalities.

To demonstrate the process, we’ll be using the Pixabay website which has thousands of free stock videos shared by the community members.

Time needed:  3 minutes

Steps to download videos from Safari on your iPhone and iPad.

Tap Download button in Safari

Alternatively, you can tap and hold on to the video, drag it to the Photos app, and directly save it to your iPhone or iPad.

Where are the Downloaded Videos Stored on iPhone and iPad?

The videos you download are saved to the Photos and the Files app. Navigating to download videos in the Photos app is quite easy. You can find it in the Albums > Recents . However, if you want to locate it in the Files app, follow the steps mentioned below.

1. Open the Files app on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Head to the Browse tab and tap the iCloud Drive option.

3. Now tap on the Downloads folder and you’ll find the downloaded videos in this tab.

Download Videos from Social Media Apps and Websites

Downloading videos from social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, etc., might not be ethical or even legal. Especially, if you want to download and share these videos or use the content in your videos, etc.

Coming to YouTube, it allows users to download videos for offline viewing within the app. These videos will not appear in the Photos or Files app and can only be accessed on YouTube. You might need a YouTube Premium subscription for some videos and resolutions (This is region specific). We have a guide that will help you download YouTube videos on your iPhone or iPad .

Now, if you upload your videos to YouTube (to store them privately as backup), then downloading these videos shouldn’t be a problem. You can look up websites that allow you to download videos from YouTube. However, please refrain from downloading videos from other creators and using them as it will come under copyright infringement laws.

On the other hand, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media websites do not allow users to download videos even within their apps. So, if you’re looking to download a video from Twitter you can check out our detailed guide to download Twitter videos on your iPhone .

If you want to download Instagram reels or videos, you can use websites like Snapinsta , Save Insta , etc. Again, please ensure that you do not circulate these videos or repurpose the content as it can land you in trouble.

We hope you’ve learned how to download videos from Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Now that you’re aware of the steps, ensure that you do not download and use the content. And, if you intend to do so, please pay the royalties or take the necessary permissions from the original creators.

How to fix Safari not downloading files on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

You may, at times, encounter an issue where Safari refuses to download photos, videos, audio, PDFs, documents, and other files from a website. In this article, we’ll explore common reasons why Safari may not be downloading files on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and provide solutions to help you get back to downloading with ease.

List of Safari downloads on iPhone

The issues you may be facing

  • Clicking the download link opens a new blank tab, and no file download starts.
  • Safari is refusing to begin file downloads from one or all sites.
  • File download starts, but it fails immediately in a second or two.
  • The download happens up to a point and then fails midway or just before completing.
  • Safari downloads a file but opens it and then deletes the original files (this happens with ZIP and other compressed files).

The solutions below should help fix all the above issues and also ones similar to them.

Before you begin

It’s possible that you’re not following the right steps to download the file. On Mac, it’s super easy, but on iPhone and iPad, downloading files may not be as obvious. With that said, even if the file has been downloaded, you may not know where it’s saved and how to find it. So, look at these tutorials, if needed:

  • How to download videos from Safari on iPhone and iPad
  • How to download files and documents to iPhone or iPad
  • How to access downloaded files on iPhone and iPad

Retry the download

In many cases, initiating the download again does the trick. Try hitting the download link again, and it should work. If not, refresh the webpage and click the download button again.

Note: Some websites put downloads behind a login wall. So, make sure to honor that.

Pause and resume the download

The download may look like it has started, but it will pause or fail in a few seconds. If that happens, hit the tiny retry button a few times, and it should start the download. If not, hit the download link again on the website.

Check your internet

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to a stable Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, or Ethernet connection and the internet is working properly.

Some useful tips

  • Turn off VPN if you’re using one.
  • Restart your Wi-Fi router.

Allow the website to download files

When you try to download a file from a website for the first time, it doesn’t start immediately. Instead, you will see an alert asking your permission to allow this site to download and save files locally or not. Make sure you allow that. If you choose to block the download, follow these steps to fix it:

On iPhone and iPad: Hit the download link again on the website and tap Allow or Download when asked. If you don’t see the Allow button, clear your browser data.

Allow and Download popup alert in Safari before downloading a file

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Now, go to Websites > Downloads > click the drop-down menu next to the website name and choose Allow . While you’re here, also make sure it says ‘ Ask ‘ or ‘ Allow ‘ next to ‘ When visiting other websites .’

Allow websites to download files in Safari on Mac

Force Quit and reopen Safari

On iPhone and iPad: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold or double-press the Home button to enter App Switcher. From here, drag the Safari app card all the way up to close it .

On Mac: Save your work in any other open Safari tabs. Next, click the Apple icon  and choose Force Quit . Here, select Safari and click Force Quit .

Now reopen Safari and try downloading the file again.

Use alternate download links

You may see more than one download link on a website. If one link fails to work, try the other one. Note: Sometimes, picking a different download quality (for a video, audio, or image) should do the trick.

Choose different download quality for image, video, and audio

Set Safari download location to anything other than iCloud Drive

If you have set Safari to download files to iCloud Drive,  switch it to any other local storage folder using the steps below:

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Safari > Downloads > On My iPhone or Other .

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. From the General section, select Downloads , Desktop , or any local folder next to ‘ File download location .’

File download location in Safari on Mac

Stop Safari from automatically opening files after download

By default, Safari on Mac is set to open files after downloading them. That means if you download a ZIP file, Safari will automatically unzip it after downloading. In rare cases, this may cause the download to fail, not complete successfully, or not even start in the first place if the file you’re trying to download is incompatible. Therefore, it’s best to turn it off from Safari Settings > General > uncheck ‘ Open “safe” files after downloading .’

Restart your device

If Safari is unable to download files due to minor glitches, save your work and do a restart .

Make sure your device has sufficient free space

New file downloads will only succeed if your iPhone, iPad, or Mac has enough free space. So go to Settings, and check how much free storage you have. If it’s full, use these tutorials to free up space:

  • 50+ tips to free space on your iPhone and iPad
  • 30+ ways to free storage space on your Mac

Clear Safari history and cache

One of the most reliable solutions to fix Safari issues is clearing its history and website data .

On iPhone and iPad, you can do this from Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

On Mac, click History from the top menu bar and select Clear History .

Try disabling a recently installed Safari extension

If you could download files earlier but can’t after installing an extension, then that extension is likely the culprit. Remove it, restart your device, and now you should have no problem downloading files.

On iPhone and iPad: Head over to this guide on installing and removing Safari extensions .

On Mac: Go to Safari Settings > Extensions > select the extension and click Uninstall .

Uninstall extension from Safari on Mac

Update Safari

Safari updates are tied to system updates on iPhone and iPad. So, go to Settings app > General > Software Update and get the latest version of the operating system.

On Mac, you can update Safari from System Settings .

Update your Mac

If you’re on an older version of macOS, consider updating to the latest version, which should improve your computer’s overall working and stability.

On macOS Ventura and later, go to System Settings > General > Software Update . And on macOS Monterey and earlier, go to System Preferences > Software Update .

PSA: You can try Safari 18 beta on your Mac without installing macOS Sequoia

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Safari is one of the many Apple apps bundled with iOS and macOS. With iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, Apple has introduced Safari 18 with new features and improvements. However, when it comes to the Mac, you don’t need to update your Mac to macOS 15 in order to try out the new Safari 18 beta.

Safari 18 beta

The new version of Safari comes with Highlights, a new way to quickly find relevant information (such as an address or phone number) on a webpage. It also introduces a redesigned Reader that summarizes webpage content using AI. There are a lot of improvements in the backend too.

While features like Highlights will likely remain exclusive to iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, the beta version of Safari 18 for previous versions of macOS brings many of the backend improvements.

This includes better support for accessibility features, new options for using Apple Pay on the web, support for the WebAuthn PRF extension, compatibility with new CSS and JavaScript features, and much more.

Anyone with a Mac running macOS Sonoma or macOS Ventura can download Safari 18 beta from the Apple Beta Software website . It’s worth noting that installing Safari beta on your Mac replaces the main Safari rather than keeping both versions, so don’t do this if you rely on Safari for your work.

For now, iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia are still available as beta previews for developers. A public beta will be released this month, while the official launch is scheduled for this fall. You can find the Safari 18 beta release notes here .
