null

We offer 24 hr free cancellation on most of our tours, winery visits and hotels. For more detail please see the individual cancellation policies on the tour, winery or hotel page.

Tour Overview

You may not be aware of, or sampled Slovenian wines, however the diversity and quality of wines being produced in the country is impressive. An increasing number of Slovenian wines are being recognised and winning awards on the international stage.

Visit now and experience Slovenian wines for yourself with this 4-day wine tasting package based in Ljubljana.

Day 1: Arrive Ljubljana.   On arrival at Ljubljana airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Ljubljana.  Depending on your flight arrival there may be time for a private walking tour of the old part of Ljubljana. The Slovenian capital is an architectural gem. The mixture of baroque style with the modernist Art Nouveau and the work of the architect Joze Plecnik are among its special treasures.

Day 2: Wine Tasting in Brda and Vipava Valley   After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your hotel for a full day wine tasting tour. The Slovenian wine growing region of Primorska, directly on the border with Italy, is home to some of Slovenia’s most renowned wineries and winemakers.

Your first stop will be at the picturesque village of Šmartno. Enjoy magnificent views from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea from a 144-metre-high viewing tower.

Continue driving towards the Italian border and the wine producing region of Goriska Brda. This region is linked with Collio in Italy and is considered one of the best white wine producing regions in Europe. Visit one of the area’s finest wineries and learn about Brda wines, followed by a traditional lunch with wine pairing.

After lunch, follow the Italian border to the south to discover the wine region of Vipava Valley, situated between two limestone plateaus that capture the whole of the Mediterranean climate. For centuries wine growing has been deep-rooted in this tiny piece of Slovenia. In the Vipava Valley, in addition to the established white wines of the region, you can also taste indigenous wines, such as Zelen, Pinela, and Ribolla Gialla. Visit a selected winery where you will have the opportunity to sample some of the much-loved local wine varieties and compare them with wines created from more well-known international grapes.

After your wine tasting, return to Ljubljana.

Day 3 Truffles & Wine in Slovenian Istria After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel for the drive to Slovenian Istria to discover the tastes of the riviera.

Your first experience of the day focuses on a culinary treasure: truffles. Join a local truffle hunter and his talented dog on an exciting hunt for black (summer) and white (autumn) truffle. Gain an insight into how truffles are discovered and how truffle dogs are effectively trained. Foodies will love the chance to track down this renowned truffle with professional hunters to lead the way who will show you the tricks of the trade. After the hunt, you will then get to indulge in a fantastic lunch of fresh truffle and local wines.

After lunch, continue your tour with a visit to Hrastovlje. This village is known for its small church of the Holy Trinity, whose walls are covered with frescoes describing passages from the bible, among which is the famous "Dance of Death".

Final stop of the day is at a selected winery. Learn about the local grapes used in Istrian wines (Malvasia and Refosk) and take a tour of the vineyard. This will be followed by a tasting of the some of the best wines in Istria, before returning to Ljubljana.

Day 4 Depart Ljubljana.   Your day is free until your transfer to Ljubljana Airport in time for your departure flight

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

The best time for a wine tour depends on the region. In most wine-growing regions, the best time to go on a wine tour is during the harvest season, which typically lasts from August to October. This may vary depending on the type of wine and region. It’s always best to research the specific wine region you plan to visit and determine the best time based on their climate and schedule of events.

The Primorska region in southwestern Slovenia, specifically the area around the town of Goriska Brda, is widely considered to have the best wine in the country. The region is known for producing high-quality white wines, particularly Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as some red wines like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil and climate in the region contribute to the unique flavors and aromas of the wines produced there.

I do not have access to real-time data.  According to the latest statistics available, there were around 28,000 wineries in Slovenia in 2019.

The wine region of Slovenia is known as Primorska.
