LIV Golf’s Lee Westwood calls for golf’s war to end ahead of U.S. Senior Open debut

51-year-old Lee Westwood will play in this week’s U.S. Senior Open, marking the first senior major of his career.

Lee Westwood, LIV Golf

Englishman Lee Westwood is fed up with the current schism surrounding professional golf, as the PGA Tour tries to strike a deal with LIV Golf’s beneficiary, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Westwood wants the best players to play side-by-side in every tournament, not just in the majors.

“No matter what the level of golf is, I think if the best players at every level don’t come together and play, there’s only one loser, and that’s the fans watching,” Westwood said Tuesday ahead of his U.S. Senior Open debut.

“We need to somehow figure a way to get the best players playing against each other more often.”

One consequence of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide is that the four majors have become even more prominent. Unlike regular tour events, LIV Golf players can tee it up at The Masters, the PGA Championship , the U.S. Open , and The Open Championship. That means fans get to see the top players compete side-by-side only four times per year.

LIV has also seen success in recent majors, as four of the last eight major champions currently play on the Saudi-backed circuit. Look no further than Bryson DeChambeau , who won the most recent major at Pinehurst No. 2.

“When you look at the U.S. Open two weeks ago or the Masters or the PGA Championship, people are happy to see Bryson [DeChambeau] or Cam [Smith] or Jon Rahm coming and playing in those big events,” Westwood said.

Lee Westwood, LIV Golf

“It’s basically getting all the best players together in one tournament to compete against each other, and that’s what you want at the highest level. You want all the best players there.”

This week’s Senior U.S. Open features two LIV Golf players: Richard Bland, who won last month’s Senior PGA Championship, and Westwood.

Westwood earned a place in this week’s U.S. Senior Open because he has played on a recent Ryder Cup team. He represented Team Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021, earning a single point. The Americans trounced the Europeans that year, 19-to-9.

Less than one year later, Westwood joined LIV Golf, where he has not had much success. Yet, Westwood will tee it up with plenty of confidence at Newport Country Club this week, thanks to his recent performance at LIV Golf Nashville , where he tied for third—the best result of his LIV Golf career.

“I started to swing well, and my whole game was coming together when I played at LIV Houston three weeks ago. Then I went home and did a little bit of work on it. I probably haven’t been working as hard on my game as I would have liked to, but I put in a bit more work in the week off,” Westwood explained.

“Putted well last week. I sharpened my short game up because I’ve been playing more, and my game is in a really good place. Played well on the final day, which was good. I haven’t been finishing tournaments off, so having fun for the last four holes, and finishing that tournament off strongly has given me a lot of confidence going into this week.”

LIV Golf’s Lee Westwood is at U.S. Senior Open for over-50 tour debut

FILE - Co-Captain Lee Westwood of Majesticks GC hits his shot from the seventh tee during the final round of LIV Golf Houston at Golf Club of Houston on Sunday, June 9, 2024 in Humble, Texas. NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Lee Westwood wants golf’s powers to stop fighting so players like him can get back on the course, where the fans want them.

The two-time Masters runner-up and former No. 1 golfer in the world is at the Newport Country Club this week for the U.S. Senior Open, making his over-50 tour debut a year late in part because of a PGA Tour ban on LIV Golf defectors.

The 51-year-old Westwood received an invite to the Senior Open, which is run by the USGA, as a recent Ryder Cup participant. Richard Bland has also earned an invitation for winning the Senior PGA Championship. The only other LIV golfer over 50 is Phil Mickelson.

“At the end of the day, we’re in the entertainment industry,” Westwood said on Tuesday after a practice round at the course on the mouth of the Narragansett Bay.

“No matter what the level of golf is, I think if the best players at every level don’t come together and play, there’s only one loser, and that’s the fans watching,” he said. “We need to somehow figure a way that we can get the best players playing against each other more often.”

Westwood ascended to the No. 1 ranking in 2010 after finishing in the top three in four of the previous five majors. That ended Tiger Woods’ record run of 281 weeks as the world’s top-ranked golfer; the Englishman held the No. 1 ranking for 22 weeks.

Although Westwood has never won a major, he has finished in the top five a dozen times.

Seems like the perfect candidate for a tour that was designed to give fans another chance to root on their favorites. But the PGA Tour’s policy is that LIV golfers have to wait one year from their last appearance on the Saudi-backed circuit to play in PGA Tour or PGA Tour Champions events.

In addition, the European tour has fined Westwood 850,000 British pounds – more than $1 million – a fine he repeated on Tuesday he has no intention of paying. “We’ll have to find a way around that,” he said.

“At any level, it’s disappointing they can’t resolve it,” Westwood said. “The Champions Tour for me is important because people have watched myself play and other guys out here play for the last 30, 40 years, and they build relationships with those players and they’ve seen us grow as players and people.

“Yes, people want to see the youngsters, the new guys on the block coming through and contending,” he said. “But they also want to see the guys they’ve made a bond with over the last 30, 40 years.”

Westwood is coming off a tie for third at last week’s LIV event outside of Nashville, Tennessee — his best result of the season. He said he didn’t feel like he needed a strong performance in Newport to make his larger point.

“Everybody that I talked to said it’s great to see myself and Richard playing here,” Westwood said, adding that he thought the victory by LIV’s Bryson DeChambeau in the U.S. Open was good for the sport.

“It’s basically getting all the best players together in one tournament to compete against each other, and that’s what you want at the highest level,” Westwood said. “You want all the best players there.”

One of five founding members of the USGA, the 7,024-yard, par-70 Newport Country Club was originally supposed to host the Senior Open in 2020 that was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been looking forward to this event now for quite a few years,” said Ernie Els, a four-time major champion who has five victories on the senior tour. “I was really looking forward to it in 2020, and I’m glad it’s come around now.”

Golfers out for practice rounds said the seaside course reminded them of a British links-style track — especially in the way the wind has such a big effect on how it plays. On Tuesday morning, the wind was blowing in their faces on the first tee; by the afternoon, it had swung around 180 degrees.

“We played with some big winds yesterday and some different winds today,” said Brett Quigley, a native Rhode Islander and sort of unofficial host of the tournament. “It’s going to play significantly different depending on the wind direction. That will be part of the great challenge.”

3-star tight end Hollis Davidson III rejoins Auburn’s 2025 class with July 4th commitment

H ollis Davidson III is back in the fold for Auburn after the 3-star tight end announced his commitment to Hugh Freeze and the Tigers on Thursday.

Davidson has a history with Auburn after having previously committed to the Tigers in February. However, as more programs got involved in his recruitment, Davidson decided to back off his pledge two months later.

“After much prayer and many conversations, my family and I feel it was too early to have a commitment set in stone,” Davidson wrote in a post to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on May 6.

Since backing off his pledge to Auburn, Davidson took official visits to Auburn, Florida and Florida State, according to 247Sports. LSU also expressed interest as it sent its tight ends coach to visit Davidson.

However, Auburn and Florida State were the two teams to make Davidson’s shortlist, with Auburn winning his commitment on Thursday.

Measuring 6-foot-5 and 238 pounds, 247Sports ranks Davidson as the No. 31 tight end in the class of 2025 and the 52nd-ranked prospect out of the state of Georgia.

During his junior campaign at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Georgia, Davidson hauled in 30 passes for 436 yards and three touchdowns as he helped the Chiefs reach the playoffs in 2023. At McIntosh, Davidson also doubles as a goal keeper on the Chiefs’ soccer team.

In rejoining Auburn’s 2025 class, Davidson brings the Tigers to two 2025 tight end commits as he joins fellow 3-star Ryan Ghea.

Now sitting at 15 commitments, Auburn’s 2025 class ranks 12th in the country according to 247Sports.

Travis Kelce: Sam LaPorta Best Tight End at TEU

John maakaron | jun 30, 2024.

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta

  • Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is expected to have a significant role in Ben Johnson's offense this upcoming NFL season.

With a record-breaking rookie season, the 2023 Detroit second-round pick has caught the attention of others across the league, including future Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce.

At the recently completed 'Tight End University' camp, hosted by Kelce and George Kittle, the Chiefs standout tight end was asked his opinion of who was the best attendee.

"LaPorta had a (expletive) year last year," Kelce expressed, while praising the Lions offensive weapon and stamping the 23-year-old as the best player he saw during the three-day camp.

Not giving away tells

After a successful rookie season, the former Iowa Hawkeyes tight end is working on his blocking technique and not giving away tells when running routes.

While fans, the media and pundits are expecting an encore performance, LaPorta is not putting any undue pressure on himself. Instead, the focus is on making improvements with grasping the details of the position.

“Certainly the blocking aspect. I’m trying to throw my hands, play a little bit lower in the run game," LaPorta said. "And then, in the receiving game, trying not to give so many tells in my routes, crossing over, late hands catching the ball. Just a few things.”

Travis Kelce was asked who the BEST TE is at TEU His Answer: Detroit Lions TE Sam LaPorta “LaPorta had a f*cking year last year…” 🎥: @BussinWTB | #OnePride pic.twitter.com/6vbC2Un5oD — Crunch Time Sports (@officialctpod) June 28, 2024

Presidential Concert Series to Celebrate 30th Season

The Lee University Presidential Concert Series will return this fall, celebrating its 30th season with a robust slate of performers, including guests both new and returning to the series, as well as artists from within Lee’s acclaimed School of Music.

“Over the past 30 years, we have been honored to host a multitude of talented artists, from jazz bands, vocal groups, and string quartets to pops concerts, chamber music, and pianofests,” said Darlia Conn, director of the Presidential Concert Series. “We are pleased to welcome another remarkable group for this season, as well!”

The concert series will begin on Sept. 22 with Italian pianist Fabio Bidini. Applauded by the New York Times for his “admirable simplicity… [that is] truly touching,” Bidini is one of the most popular pianists ever to appear on Lee’s campus, “bringing Italian bravissimo to every performance.”  He is considered among the world’s leading concert pianists and pedagogues.

Featured pianist Jonathan Jung will take the stage on Jan. 26, 2023, joined on the program by fellow Lee piano faculty Joo-Hae Kim, ChoEun Lee, and Muen Vanessa Wei in Pangle Hall. Each of these artists combine superb academic credentials with performance experience on some of the world’s greatest stages.

Praised by The Strad for its “incredible ensemble, passionate playing, articulate and imaginative ideas, and wide palette of colors,” the Lysander Piano Trio showcases the talents of Julliard School alumni Itamar Zorman, violin, Liza Stepanova, piano, and Michael Katz, cello. The Trio will perform on Feb. 28, 2023. Since the trio’s formation in 2009, they have toured all over the world, winning numerous competitions and performing for audiences of all ages.

The Series will continue on March 16, 2023, with The Clarinet Quintet, five members of the New York-based Manhattan Chamber Players, known for performing some of the greatest works in the chamber repertoire. Reviewers at the Minnesota Beethoven Festival said the group’s “musicianship was stunning, their energy was palpable, and the sheer joy they brought to the stage was truly special.” In addition to its numerous concerts in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the group frequently tours in Asia and the Middle East.

All concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. The September, October, January, and March performances will take place in Pangle Hall, and concerts in February and April will be held in Squires Recital Hall. PGA Tour players welcomed by 'luscious' and wet course at Detroit Golf Club

The scoring-friendly environment and healthy green grass at Detroit Golf Club is a welcome sight for PGA Tour golfer Min Woo Lee after grinding through Pinehurst No. 2 in his previous event, the U.S. Open.

Lee finished 5-over in the U.S. Open then skipped the Travelers Championship last week to prepare for his first stop at the Rocket Mortgage Classic from home in Las Vegas. Lee, a tour rookie ranked No. 64 in the FedEx Cup standings, is ready for the new environment on Detroit’s northside after grinding through one of the toughest courses on the Tour this season.

FULL DETAILS: 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Here are the events this week at Detroit Golf Club

“The course looks amazing,” said Lee, a native of Australia. “Coming from the U.S. Open, it’s a bit greener so it’s quite nice. Hopefully the weather holds.”

Lee, one of the top-ranked players in the 156-player field set to tee off Thursday, spoke to the media Tuesday after a torrential thunderstorm pounded the course with rain for most of the morning and partially delayed proceedings.

The thick rough and “luscious” greens, as Lee described them, received an extra amount of water two days before the tournament begins due to the two-hour thunderstorm. But the sea of green was a welcome sight for Lee, who spent the last fortnight training in the unrelenting Vegas heat after playing a challenging and dried-out Pinehurst.

“If we played (Pinehurst) every week, I’d probably have no hair by now,” the 25-year-old rookie said. “It’s nice to just come to a course that’s really green and luscious."

The relative ease of Detroit Golf Club’s setup leads to a lower scoring environment for the Rocket Mortgage Classic compared to some other PGA Tour stops. Rickie Fowler won the 2023 tournament at 24-under after prevailing in a three-man playoff, and 2022 winner Tony Finau shot 26-under.

“I find making birdies fun; bogies aren’t fun,” Lee said.

The key to going low, he said, was to be accurate off the tee with his driver. Despite not playing in Detroit before, the scouting report Lee received from the Tour and other players he talked to said low scores are possible if you can be aggressive and straight with the biggest club in the bag.

“It’s a course where you can hit driver a lot and take advantage of a lot of corners,” Lee said. “I guess take advantage if you do hit driver well. Hopefully, I can do that this week.”

Willie Mack III, the Flint native who qualified via the John Shi p pen Invitational , said he will be ready for any conditions on the course after experiencing two different weather days in the 36-hole tournament he won last weekend, and seeing the wet course after the rain today.

“Just seeing those conditions and different aspects hopefully will help me this week,” Mack said. “I’m not sure about the plan this week but if it’s windy at least I know what clubs not to hit. I know it’s wet out, it’s not a firm course this week.”

Mack is making his second appearance in the Rocket Mortgage Classic — he played on a sponsor's exemption in 2021 — and his ninth on the PGA Tour. Mack's 2021 appearance was the first time he made the cut on Tour. He hopes to take advantage of his course knowledge thanks to playing Detroit Golf Club “a million times” in his life and the quality golf he’s been playing recently, including the John Shippen win and qualifying for the U.S. Open to take advantage of his spot.

“I’ve been playing well,” Mack said. “It’s just when you get these opportunities, I gotta keep and play well. Not let these opportunities go to waste.”
