Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour Highlights

Embark on an unforgettable 2-hour 4WD UTV adventure through Kualoa Ranch's iconic Jurassic Valley. You have the option to take the wheel of your own UTV or sit back and enjoy the ride with a skilled UTV driver on a shared tour—it's entirely up to you!

This extraordinary experience promises to create lifelong memories. The tour will lead you through lush jungle landscapes and beneath towering mountains that have served as the backdrop for numerous film productions. Along the journey, you'll encounter many familiar filming locations.

You'll have the chance to pilot your own open-air UTV (Ultra Terrain Vehicle) and invite your entire group to join the excitement. To drive, you must be at least 21 years old, and if desired, you can swap drivers mid-tour. Our state-of-the-art UTVs can accommodate groups of 2-5 guests per vehicle, and up to 6 if smaller children are part of the adventure. Rain or shine, you'll traverse the scenic saddle road, leading to remote areas within the vast 1,000+ acre Ka’a’awa “Jurassic” Valley. Following a rainfall, expect to ford rivers and gaze up at enchanting waterfalls cascading from the cliff summits above. Be prepared for some muddy terrain, so dress appropriately. We recommend comfortable attire, sunglasses, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, and of course, your camera.

One of the key advantages of the UTV adventure over a conventional ATV ride is the ability to bring younger passengers along. You'll have ample opportunities to stop for photos at your leisure, and conversation within the vehicle is effortless. Our friendly guides will highlight all the thrilling sights along the route. We maintain a low guide-to-guest ratio, ensuring that each group receives personalized attention with one guide for every 5 UTVs.

Keep in mind that the Jurassic Valley UTV Ride is highly sought-after and often books up 4-5 weeks in advance, so make your reservations well ahead of time!

For your convenience, transportation to and from Waikiki hotels is available. There are both early morning and mid-morning departure times to Kualoa Ranch, with return options throughout the afternoon. Alternatively, you can opt for private roundtrip transportation.

We had an amazing time at Kualoa ranch! We did the 2 hour UTV tour and it was an absolutely blast! Our tour guides were amazing and we even got to try some strawberry guavas! The views and beauty of this place are out of this world! You do get very dirty but it was part of the fun for us! I highly recommend!!

We did the 2 hour UTV Raptor tour and it was one of the best things we did on our Oahu vacation. Driving our own Raptor was so much fun and the views we drove by were absolutely spectacular. Our guides Matthew and Vaughan heightened our experience with great stories and history about the ranch and filming locations. This is a MUST VISIT when you come to Oahu, just make sure you book the tours at least a couple weeks in advance as they fill up quickly!

Did the UTV tour with our kids and we had a great time. The guides were super friendly and made it a lot of fun. Lots of great facts about the land, Hawaiian culture, and of course all the movies. The took some funny pictures for us as well. You definitely get dusty and a bit dirty but it is well worth it. There are bathrooms and some food onsite. Highly recommended!

kualoa ranch utv tours

Overall rating

Very organized and well ran. Both guides were informative and very kind and eager to help with anything. Thank you so much!

This was a great tour to see the Kualoa ranch and Jurassic Valley. We started out meeting our two tour guides and safety explanations and videos. The guides were excellent and informative. We were given helmets, googl ... es and neck gators. The Kualoa ranch is just beautiful. Tour stops were at areas that had gorgeous views. Our guides helped take pictures and even had helped with some fun active pictures! Even though there were many tours going on, things were planned so our tour was the only one at the stop. At each stop the tour guides gave some history and/or talked about the movies that happened on the site. I would definitively recommend this tour!!

UTV tour is a FAST drive

The Kualoa ranch is expansive and offers beautiful vistas of the Hawaiian landscapre - moutains, valleys, forests, and ocean views. The drive/pathway chosen to drive thru the 4000 acres is fast. I recall 3-4 stops - an ... d always felt kind of rushed to jump out'the vehicle - look around - and then get back on the road as other UTV, bus, and bike tours were stopping at the same places. So, 1) it was hard to look around at the views while driving - typically between 15-18 mph - which sounds slow - but you're in a line of vehicles - someone drving in front of you - someone behind. Attention must be on the driving at all times while driving. Vehicle behind us was 'rushing' on our bumper - some kid in the car shouting at us to 'drive faster' rudely. Ummm - when you have to be attendant to what's driving in front of you (the guide in a vehicle) - sometimes, kiddo, that is not possible. And yes, his parents were with him - and yes, the father was driving - fully aware of the rudeness - that's all I say. Stopped to look at some of the remnants of scenery left by movies shot on location there. Photo ops were hard to grab when so many people and other groups were vying for the best views and angles. The guides were o.k. - a little flippant and joking around with each other a bit much. One of the guides 'treating' us to some local Hawaiian lore about the land and lizards - which did not make any sense to us and just seemed kind of out of left field and a little odd. It was worth seeing the land but - if you're driving, you'll miss out on a lot - until the brief stops.

The bus is $2.75 for each bus ride ($5.50 one way), and you can either pay with exact change, or with a Holo Card which can be purchased at ABC Stores located throughout Waikiki.

How far away is this activity from Waikiki?

How far in advance should I book this activity?

We recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last minute availability is limited, and walk-ins won't always find seats available.

Is this activity kid-friendly?

Children as young as 5 years old may accompany adults (21 & over) as an ATV passenger.

Can I drive my own ATV?

You will drive your own ATV Raptor for the tour, and guests from different parties are not mixed on the same vehicle.

Can we switch the driver?

Two (2) drivers are allowed per vehicle, as long as the driver is over 21 years old and has a valid driver's license.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a utv.

A UTV, or Utility Task Vehicle, is a type of off-road vehicle that is designed to carry two or more passengers and is often used for recreational purposes. They are also known as side-by-sides because they feature multiple seats positioned side by side. UTVs are equipped with seat belts and roll-over protection and are designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than most other vehicles.

This makes them perfect for exploring the diverse landscapes of Kualoa Ranch. On our 2-Hour UTV Raptor Tour, you'll have the opportunity to drive one of these vehicles yourself, following a guide through the ranch's stunning valleys and remote areas. It's a fun and exciting way to experience the beauty of Kualoa Ranch! 🚙🌴

Do we get dirty on this tour?

It's definitely a possibility! On the 2-Hour UTV Raptor Tour, it's quite common to get dirty. The tour often involves driving on dirt roads and through muddy areas, especially after rain. Some of our tours can get quite dusty as well, so a mask may be helpful on those tours. Here are a few tips to prepare for the tour:

- Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty.

- Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

- Consider bringing a change of clothes for after the tour.

- Sunglasses or goggles can help protect your eyes from dust.

- A bandana or mask might be useful to cover your mouth and nose from dust.

Remember, getting a little dirty is part of the fun and adventure at Kualoa Ranch! 🤠🌿

Do we get to drive the UTV's ourselves?

Yes, on the 2-Hour UTV Raptor Tour, you have the opportunity to drive the UTV yourself. However, there are a few requirements and guidelines to keep in mind:

- Drivers must be at least 21 years old and present a valid driver's license.

- Drivers are responsible for following the guide and staying with the group.

- Drivers are also responsible for the safe operation of the UTV and must adhere to the safety instructions provided.

- All drivers are liable for any damages that may occur to the UTV while they are operating it.

If you're not comfortable driving or do not meet the requirements, you can still enjoy the tour as a passenger and let someone else do the driving. 🚙✨

How fast can we drive on the UTV Tour?

While the UTVs used in our tours are capable of reaching high speeds, safety is our top priority at Kualoa Ranch. The speed at which you'll be able to drive during the 2-Hour UTV Raptor Tour will depend on the terrain and the specific route chosen by your guide. The tour is not a race, but rather a guided exploration of the beautiful landscapes of Kualoa Ranch.

The focus is on enjoying the scenery, learning about the ranch, and having a fun, safe adventure. Your guide will set a pace that is safe and comfortable for all participants. It's important to remember that all drivers must follow the guide and stay with the group at all times. 🚙🌿

Will there be other people in the UTV with us?

The UTVs used in our 2-Hour UTV Raptor Tour can accommodate between 2 to 6 people. If you're part of a smaller group, you may have a UTV to yourselves. However, depending on the number of people booked for the tour and the size of other groups, it's possible that you may be sharing a UTV with other guests.

If you have specific preferences or concerns about sharing a UTV, I recommend reaching out to Kualoa Ranch directly at (808) 237-7321. They can provide the most accurate information based on the specifics of your booking. 🚙👥

A guided tour supports local tour guides, reduces the number of cars on the roads, and they can take care of permits and reservations that are hard to acquire. We have developed a relationship with one of the owners of Hawaii Tours, Daniel Logtenberg, and trust him with our Hawaii vacation planning.

We care for the land or “ Malama the aina ” by showing you the best of Hawaiʻi so that you can fall in love with this incredible destination too… just as we did so many years ago.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour Review

This 2-hour UTV Raptor Tour at Kualoa Ranch was the activity I was looking forward to the most on our Hawaiian vacation. I’m all about adventure and seeing beautiful places and I was super excited to see the stunning filming location of Jurassic Park .

Arriving/Checking-In

Kualoa Ranch kindly requests that you arrive 45 minutes before your scheduled tour time. 🕒 This allows everyone to arrive punctually and provides sufficient time for the check-in process, restroom use, and other preparations.

As our tour time approached, my husband, Chris, had to complete the “driver form.” Following that, we were provided with our safety helmets. Once properly fitted with our helmets, we watched an informative safety and instructional video.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour Review: When getting close to the time of your tour you will pick up your helmets and watch a safety/instructional video.

Then after all of these preliminary steps, it was time to board our UTV!! The UTV fits my family of 5 perfectly! Chris and I sat in the front and my 10-year-old and 2 teens sat in the back.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour Review: The Kualao Ranch UTV Tour takes you by scenic cliffs just like this.

There were many stops along the way where we got out, took pictures, and listened to our very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide👩‍🌾 tell us about the history of the ranch and the movies and TV shows that have been filmed here. She even gave us an inside scoop on movies that were filmed here in the last couple of months.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour Review: The Traveling Swansons in one of the beautiful valleys of Kualoa Ranch.

Not only was she super friendly and knowledgeable, but she was also a wonderful photographer . 📸 She happily asked if she could take our family’s photos at all the stops. Plus, she even made it a little fun by incorporating a fun dinosaur into the shots. 🦖

At one of the stops, she even took a slow-motion video of us running from a dinosaur at the Radio Tower Bunker from the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom . 🤣

Across from the Radio Tower Bunker was a cage also from the same movie, which is a great photo opp.

It was so surreal to see the famous scene from the original Jurassic Park where Grant and the kids were being chased by dinosaurs and they hid behind the log. 🪵 🦖 I couldn’t believe we were HERE!!

Located next to the famous log scene was also the boneyard from the movie, Kong: Skull Island .

To be honest, out of all Kualoa Ranch tours, I’m the least impressed with Aloha Aina Tour. Is it a bad experience? At Oahu’s most well-preserved ancient Hawaiian fishponds (Moli’i), you will get to learn about early Hawaiian aquaculture practices and how fish was farmed.

But is Aloha Aina Tour worth the money? It really depends on your interest, but I think the experience falls short compared to other tours and activities that are offered at Kualoa Ranch.

What is the best Kualoa Ranch tour?

The best and most highly-rated Kualoa Ranch tour is the ATV Raptor Tour , offering an exhilarating ride through the jungle and movie sites on all-terrain vehciles.

Other popular tours include the Jurassic Valley Zipline which gives guests a bird’s-eye view of the lush valley below, and the Movies Tour which takes guests to some of the filming locations for popular movies and TV shows.

My Honest Review of Kualoa Ranch Tours

Out of all the most popular tours at Kualoa Ranch, I think ATV tour is the best tour in terms of unique experience and value for money.

Kualoa Ranch ATV Tour vs Movies Tour vs Jungle Tour

The ATV Raptor Tour takes you off the beaten path and into some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the ranch while also include some stops from the Movies Tour and the Jungle Tour, giving you the best value for money. You will get to see firsthand how the ranch is managed and learn about its cattle operation. And, of course, the scenery is simply breathtaking.

In order to drive the all-terrain vehicle, you have to be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license. It’s amazing to feel that you’re in control of your exploration! Some parts of the dirt trails may be muddy, so you may want to bring a change of clothes or wet wipes with you.

Because the ATV tour will include some stops from the Movies Tour and the Jungle Tour, if you want to add another tour to stay longer at Kualoa Ranch, I’d suggest you add the Ocean Voyage Tour to avoid repetitive stops.

Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour vs Jungle Tour

If the possibility of getting dirty on a thrilling jungle ride turns you away from the ATV tour, both the Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour and Jungle Tour would be great alternatives. I find the Movies tour and Jungle tour quite similar in that they both included stops at some of the filming sites.

However, the Movies Tour had more filming stops overall, and you might even get to see a filming in progress if you’re lucky. The Jungle Expediton Tour includes a short hike to a secluded lookout, where you can enjoy some stunning views.

If you’re a big movie fan, you may find the Movies tour more fun. If not, the Jungle Expedition tour has the perfect combination between stops at beautiful nature and filming locations.

Useful Tips for Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour and Jungle Tour : While most people will try to sit in the front of the shuttle, I find it better to sit at the end for both Hollywood Movie Sites Tour and Jungle Expedition Tour. That way, you will be the first to get off and take pictures before everyone else.

We were the first to get off at the Jurassic World movie site and we had so much time to explore and take photos without others in the frame. After that, we had more time to explore the sites while others were waiting in line for their turns to take pictures.

Why should you trust us?  We’ve spent several hours researching and gathering consumer feedback on the best tours at Kualoa Ranch, but most importantly, we’ve been to Kualoa Ranch multiple times. We know all about the beauty and adventure that can be found at this stunning location.

What Is Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is one of the oldest and most revered ranches in Hawaii. Located on Oahu’s windward coast near Kaneohe, this 4,000-acre ranch offers breathtaking views with lush green valleys and majestic mountains.

Kualoa Ranch is a working cattle ranch, but it has also served as an iconic filming location since the 1950s. It has been featured in films such as Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates , Jumanji , and many more.

Lots of cattle in the field at Kualoa Ranch seen during our ATV Raptor tour, with some spectacular mountain views.

Note About Kualoa Ranch Tours

Before we begin, I want to mention that the tour duration includes safety briefings and training. I’ve seen multiple reviews where people said the tour was shorter than expected.

We have been on many tours in Oahu and Kualoa Ranch specifically, and we have never felt like the tour was too short compared to what was advertised.

So, with that said, let’s dive in and look at the top tours at Kualoa Ranch!

1. ATV Raptor Tour

⭐  RATING:  4.5 out of 5 stars  | Duration:  2 hours

Age Restrictions: 21+ years to drive; 5+ years to ride

The ATV Raptor Tour is a thrilling adventure that takes you through the heart of Kualoa Ranch’s Jurassic Valley.

Guests will ride in all-terrain UTVs through dirt roads, passing by movie sets and other landmarks.

This two-hour tour also includes an experienced guide who will take you to some of the ranch’s most beautiful and remote locations. Your guide will share stories about Kualoa Ranch’s rich history, culture, and movies filmed there as you explore its unique terrain.

Each ATV can hold between two to six people depending on your group’s number of kids.

This is an excellent option for those looking for a thrilling adventure and stunning views of the ranch.

Note:  This tour is officially known as the UTV Raptor Tour, but we are referring to it as the ATV tour because most tourists call it the ATV tour. Your guide will be the only one driving an ATV while everyone rides UTVs.

Tip:  This is the most popular tour at Kualoa Ranch, so be sure to book ahead of time! Also, this is a rain-or-shine tour, so be sure to come prepared and check the weather in advance.

We wore raincoats during our tour because mother nature blessed us with rain. If you do not have a raincoat, they sell some ponchos for cheap.

A line of UTVs at Kualoa Ranch parked on the side during our tour.

What’s Included:

Why we love this tour: This tour is the perfect mix of adventure and exploration. You will have an action-packed day, from driving your ATV to learning about Kualoa Ranch’s history! Also, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though we did this tour on a rainy day, he still made the experience fun and exciting.

Cons: Very dusty and muddy, but that’s part of the adventure! So, make sure to wear clothes you are okay with getting dirty.

2. Jurassic Adventure Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2.5 hours

Age restrictions : 3+ years

The Jurassic Adventure Tour is a guided tour that takes you to iconic movie sets such as the original Jurassic Park , Jurassic World , King Kong , Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , and more.

The tour begins in an open-air off-road vehicle, where you will journey through the lush valleys and rugged terrain of Kualoa Ranch. The ride might be a little bumpy, but nothing too intense.

The tour also covers some historical sites, including an old World War II bunker.

Along the way, you can take pictures with some of the props used in different films. Your guide will also share stories about the movies filmed there and interesting facts about Hawaiian history and culture.

Our favorite part of this tour was stopping at the famous Jurassic field where the Gallimimus flock towards the cast! It was surreal to see a place where some of our favorite scenes were shot.

What’s included:

  • Guided tour

Why we love this tour: We loved seeing some of the iconic movie locations. It was also a fantastic way to learn about the different movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Also, the guides are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Cons: Some might find this tour a bit pricey, but it’s worth the experience.

3. Jurassic Valley Zipline

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 hours

Restrictions:

  • Age: 18+ years old if unaccompanied by an adult
  • Height: Between 4’8” – 6’9”
  • Waist Size: Between 22″ – 50″
  • Upper Thigh Size: Between 18″ – 28″
  • Weight: Between 70 and 280 pounds

The  Jurassic Valley Zipline Tour  is another thrilling way to explore Kualoa Ranch with friends and family. This zipline tour consists of seven ziplines, five short hiking trails, and two suspension bridges.

Guests will take a shuttle to the zipline base camp, where they will be fitted with a harness and helmet. Safety briefings are included before each zipline.

All ziplines are tandem (dual) and range from 200 feet to 1/4 of a mile in length. The lines start easy and get progressively more challenging, but nothing too scary, in our opinion.

The longest zipline is the fourth one, and the fastest one is the seventh giving you time to get used to the experience before it gets more intense.

After the tour, guests will return to the zipline base, where you can purchase photos taken throughout the tour.

The valley at Jurassic Park with some mountain views and some clouds in the sky.

  • All necessary gear

Why we love this tour: The adrenaline rush of flying through Jurassic Valley on a zipline is an unforgettable experience. Also, we love dual zip lines, as these tend to move faster than other single-line tours we’ve been on.

This tour reminds us of ziplining with Outfitters Kauai, one of the best zipline tours in Kauai. If you are ever in Kauai and looking for a tandem zipline experience, definitely check it out.

Cons: Some customers mentioned that most lines were moderate. If you are a very experienced zipliner and an adrenaline junkie, this one might not be the right tour.

4. Horseback Walking Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 hours

Age: 10+ years old

Height: minimum 4’6″

Weight: maximum 230 pounds

If you would rather explore Ka’a’awa “Jurassic” Valley on the back of a horse, then you should join this two-hour walking tour. The horses are well-trained, so even if you have never been horseback riding before, you can still enjoy it.

The tour begins with an introductory lesson about how to ride your horse correctly and safely. Your guide will then help everyone get on their horses.

The tour will take you along the trails of Ka’a’awa Valley, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and see some of the locations used in film productions.

The trails are easy to navigate, and your guide will give you interesting information about the area as you ride.

The horses at Kualoa Ranch before our tour, with some gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: The horseback riding tour is a great way to intimately explore Kualoa Ranch and Ka’a’awa Valley. It’s a peaceful way to take in the breathtaking views and learn about the area’s history.

5. Jungle Expedition Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 Minutes

Age Restrictions: 3+ years old

The  Jungle Expedition Tour  is one of the best ways to explore Kualoa Ranch with less work on your part.

You will be driven in a custom-built open-air jungle vehicle to explore the Hakipu’u rainforest. This is the same gorgeous valley seen in Jurassic World , Jumanji , Kong: Skull Island , and more.

The ride is bumpy and fun, and you’ll learn about the history of Kualoa Ranch and the surrounding areas from your guide.

Guests also have the option to take a short 15-minute hike to a scenic overlook with incredible views of the valley.

The lush scenery at Kualoa Ranch with some spectacular mountain views.

  • 15-minute hike (optional)

Why we love this tour: If you don’t have the time or prefer sitting back and taking it all in, this is the perfect way to explore Kualoa Ranch. We also love that this tour is one of the cheaper options and is suitable for people of most ages.

Cons: While this tour includes some stops on movie sets, it has fewer stops than the other tours or the Movie Sites Tour. If your primary goal is to visit most movie sets, this tour might not be the best one. It focuses more on the jungle, the beautiful views, and a fun ride.

6. Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

⭐  RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

Restrictions: None

Are you a movie buff? Then the  Hollywood Movie Sites Tour  is perfect for you! This tour has the most movie stops of all the tours listed.

You’ll explore the iconic backdrops used in movies and television shows since the 1950s. Some stops include Jurassic World , Godzilla , Windtalkers , 50 First Dates , Pearl Harbor , Jumanji , and more.

Your guide will take you on a vintage school bus and provide interesting information about the production and filming of the scenes.

This tour also stops at the World War II bunker, where you can find WWII artifacts and exhibits, props, posters, and memorabilia from movies and shows that have been shot at the ranch over the years.

A little village inside of Kualoa Ranch during the Movie Sites Tour with gorgeous mountain views.

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour has the most movie stops. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting stories about the production and filming of each movie. It felt surreal to be standing in the same place where our favorite movies were filmed.

7. Electric Mountain Bike Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 2 Hours

Height: Between 4’6” – 6’5”

Weight: Between 85 – 250 pounds

Do you want to explore Kualoa Ranch in a more active way? Then the 6-mile  Electric Mountain Bike Tour  is perfect for you!

You will get outfitted with an electric mountain bike as you explore Kualoa and Ka’a’awa Valleys with your guide. The e-bike makes it easy to cover more ground in less time, with minimal effort on your part. The trail is a gravel/rocky path, but the e-bike and its suspension make it much easier to traverse.

Enjoy spectacular views of Kaneohe Bay, Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat Island), and Kualoa Valley. At certain spots along the trail, your guide will stop for photo ops so you can capture some amazing shots of the scenery.

This tour includes 5-6 stops. During the first stop, you will explore the World War II bunker and its artifacts. After that, you’ll explore the valley and the movie sets.

E-mountain bikes parked on the side of the trail during our tour at Kualoa Ranch.

  • Electric mountain bike rental

Why we love this tour: We love the idea of exploring the ranch on an electric bike. Electric bikes make it easy for people of all skill levels to enjoy the ride. Also, electric bikes are much quieter than ATVs, so it’s a peaceful way to explore nature.

8. Secret Island Beach Adventure

⭐  RATING: 4 out of 5 stars | Duration: 3 Hours

Looking for an adventure that includes a beach? Then the  Secret Island Beach Adventure  is perfect for you. On this tour, you’ll explore Kualoa’s secret beach and take part in many activities.

Guests can participate in kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach volleyball, and more. The beach also has hammocks under palm trees for those that want to relax and enjoy the view.

Showers and changing rooms are available on the beach. Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, drinks, snacks, and whatever else you need for the beach.

  • Beach Activities

Why we love this tour: This is a unique experience. You get to explore the secret beach at Kualoa Ranch and participate in many beach activities with your friends or family. Also, the tour guides are very friendly.

Cons: This tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys, so this might not be the best tour if that’s what you’re looking for. This tour is best for those wanting to spend time at a private beach.

9. Kualoa Grown Tour

⭐  RATING: 5 out of 5 stars | Duration: 90 minutes

The  Kualoa Grown Tour  is perfect for those that want to learn about local Hawaiian farming.

Guests will tour one of Hawaii’s most preserved ancient Hawaiian Fishponds (Moli’i), carbon-dated between 800 and 1,000 years old.

For over 800 years, Moli’i has been used to raise fish and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the  United States Department of the Interior .

You’ll also get to explore flower gardens and tropical fruits of Moli’i during the tour.

  • Access to Moli’i Fishpond

Why we love this tour: We love that this tour focuses on agriculture. You get to learn about the ancient Hawaiian culture and traditional farming methods that have been passed down for generations.

Cons: Just like the Secret Island Beach Adventure, this tour doesn’t focus on movie sets or touring the gorgeous valleys.

Kualoa Ranch Movie Tour vs. Jungle Tour

The main difference between the movie tour and the jungle tour is that the movie tour focuses on movie sets, locations, and TV shows filmed at Kualoa Ranch. Overall, the movie tour has more stops at movie sites than the jungle tour.

On the other hand, the jungle tour focuses more on the natural beauty of Kualoa Ranch and its lush green valleys. It also includes some stops at movie sites but is more focused on the flora and fauna of Kualoa Ranch.

Which one should you choose?  It depends on the experience you are looking for when choosing between these two tours. We recommend the movie tour if you’re interested in seeing movie sites and learning about filming locations.

If you’re looking for something more focused on nature and natural beauty, plus some movie location stops, then the jungle tour is a great option.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is located on the east side of Oahu. Below are the two best ways to get there:

Drive: Driving to Kualoa Ranch is very straightforward. It takes about 35-45 minutes from Waikiki, depending on traffic.

Uber/Lyft or Taxi: If you cannot drive or would rather not, you can book an Uber/Lyft or take a taxi. This option is more costly but is another convenient option.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s worth noting that the best tour will vary depending on your interests.

Oahu Travel Tips to Know Before You Start Oahu Vacation Planning

1. best oahu vacation packages are at costco.

Before you book anything for your vacation to Oahu, make sure to shop around for the best Oahu deals.

While the cheapest time to visit Oahu is during shoulder season (mid-April to June in the Spring and September to mid-December in the Fall), that can be difficult for most families with school-age kids.

We’ve found some awesome Costco Oahu vacation packages , including free car rentals and other perks.

We like to check Costco Travel first to see what hotels and condos are partnered with and then price check on our own to see which is cheaper.

There are affordable Oahu honeymoon packages and great deals on Oahu family resorts when you bundle them with airfare.

Read more tips on what to avoid doing in Oahu and other genius tips to travel on a budget.

Save Money with Points

Here are the best credit card offers for families who travel and want to use points to pay for airfare and hotels in Hawaii.

2. You Don’t Need a Car in Waikiki

If you are staying in Waikiki and have no interest in driving around to explore Oahu, you definitely don’t need a car.

Just about every major Oahu attraction offers a shuttle service from Waikiki. Tons of day tours and luaus also have a Waikiki shuttle service.

The biggest advantage of not renting a car in Waikiki is that you will save SO much money on parking. It’s insanely expensive to park in Waikiki, whether it’s overnight at your hotel or in a lot.

But if you want to rent a car for a few days of your trip, you can easily get a rental car in Waikiki.

We have rented cars in Waikiki just for the day to get out and explore a few Oahu day trips, and then we return them for the night to save money on overnight parking fees.

3. First Timers Like to Stay in Waikiki

If this is your first trip to Honolulu, you’ll probably want to spend part (if not all) of your trip staying in Waikiki.

There’s a reason it’s such an iconic destination. From the array of beachfront restaurants, amazing shopping, and attractions, there’s really something for everyone.

It’s also where you’ll find most of Oahu’s hotels and resorts at all price points.

Because traffic and parking in Waikiki can be a pain, staying there is much easier. That way, you can walk or hop on the trolley to go just about everywhere.

After you’ve been to Oahu once or twice, you might consider staying in another part of the island for a different experience.

But until then, you’ll probably want to focus on a Waikiki vacation.

Book a Family Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a family photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll be in some photos. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

4. Pearl Harbor is FREE

So, once you start looking into things to do on Oahu , you’ll start seeing lots of Pearl Harbor tours. Many of them are pricey.

The thing is, it’s actually completely free to visit Pearl Harbor (and parking is even free). But, it takes planning.

You can reserve free tickets online or show up right when they open to snag one of the free tickets they allot each day.

The free tickets cover only the USS Arizona Memorial and the museum.

If you want to tour the U.S.S. Missouri, explore the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum , or hop on the U.S.S. Bowfin submarine, you’ll need to pay for tickets or a tour.

It’s easy to get to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki . If you don’t rent a car on Oahu, you might want to join a tour that includes transportation. Or, you can always take an Uber or shuttle.

Pearl Harbor is definitely one of the best cheap things to do on Oahu !

5. You’ll Need a Full Day at the Polynesian Cultural Center

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people ask whether or not they really need a full day at the Polynesian Cultural Center . YES, you will.

It’s located in Laie, which is at least an hour’s drive from Waikiki. PCC opens at 11:45 am, meaning you’d need to leave Waikiki in the morning if you want time to stop and eat breakfast on the way.

Once you’re there, you’ll discover that there are SO many presentations and activities, and you honestly won’t be able to do or see everything on the schedule.

They feature 7 Polynesian villages, a canoe pageant, canoe tours, a luau, and the Ha: Breath of Life show . Check out the latest prices and more details.

If you plan on staying for their luau and the Ha: Breath of Life show (which I HIGHLY recommend), you’ll be at PCC until about 9 p.m. That’s a long day.

So, seriously, think twice about trying to do an activity in the early morning, or you’ll be pretty wiped out. You can read my full Polynesian Cultural Center review HERE .

6. Surfing Competitions Are During Winter

Since Hawaii is known as a premier surfing destination, many visitors are eager to watch professional surfers.

If you watch movies set in Hawaii, it can seem like there’s always a local surfing competition going on.

That’s not really the case.

If you want to see a Hawaii surfing competition, like Vans Triple Crown of Surfing or Billabong Pipe Masters , you’ll want to visit Oahu in winter.

This is when the waves are massive on Oahu’s North Shore, like in Hanauma Bay, making it the ultimate spot for surf competitions in Hawaii.

And if you do go, you’ll want to pack your own food, drinks, and shade.

Learn more about North Shore Oahu surfing !

7. North Shore is Really Far from Waikiki

Many people have a romantic notion of staying in a beachfront cottage at the North Shore for a more “authentic” Hawaii experience.

It definitely has a small-town vibe and is a much different trip than staying in Waikiki.

What people don’t realize, though, is that it is SUPER far away. It can take up to 2 hours to get to Waikiki/Honolulu from the North Shore during rush hour.

I always get nervous when people tell me they are going to spend the morning at Pearl Harbor, the afternoon at North Shore, and then head back to Waikiki for dinner. It’s just not realistic.

If you are doing a day trip up to the North Shore , really do plan on that being the only thing you do all day. Book your luau up there instead of trying to return to downtown Honolulu in time.

And I highly recommend downloading the Oahu Shaka App before you go. It’s a GPS-oriented audio tour guide that tells you about the places on Oahu you are driving past. It’s affordable and definitely one of the best Hawaii travel apps .

8. Disney Aulani is Pretty Isolated

If you are as big of a Disney fan as my family, I’m sure Disney Aulani has been on your bucket list for a while.

It’s one of our FAVORITE places to stay on Oahu with kids. From the awesome programs to the character meals to the pool area, Aulani is a slice of heaven.

But, if you’ve never been to Oahu, you’ll be shocked at how far away it is from everything else.

It’s located in Ko Olina, which basically just has a handful of hotels and restaurants. And there’s barely anything within walking distance.

You’ll want to rent a car to explore Oahu or just hit up the grocery store (the closest is 15 minutes away.)

Or, you’ll want to just stay at the resort and plan on eating all your meals at their two on-site restaurants (or Monkeypod Kitchen across the street.)

Aulani isn’t a convenient place to stay if you plan to do a bunch of activities across Oahu.

9. There are TONS of Oahu Luaus (and they aren’t all equal)

One of the Oahu travel tips I give to make your vacation memorable is going to a luau and making it a part of their Oahu itinerary . However, not all luaus on Oahu are the same.

Sure, there are a bunch of Oahu luaus that ply tourists with watered-down mai tais, recite corny jokes, and try to upsell you at every turn. But there are some really cool ones too!

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a popular choice. It’s a full-day experience with hands-on activities and a luau. But they have the Ha: Breath of Life show after the luau, which is incredible! Find the best prices here.

Toa Luau is my favorite North Shore luau because it’s small and they incorporate a lot of Samoan food and traditions. Plus, it’s super kid-friendly. Find the best prices here or read my full Toa Luau review .

We also really like Experience Nutridge , which is an intimate luau event near Waikiki.

Get my breakdown of the best Oahu luaus !

10. Everything is Filmed at Kualoa Ranch

Wondering where they filmed Lost ? It was Kualoa Ranch .

Want to explore Jurassic Park ? Yep, Kualoa Ranch.

50 First Dates ? Kualoa Ranch. See a pattern?

If you want to see Oahu movies and TV filming locations, Kualoa Ranch is a HUGE one. Over the decades, over 80 movies and TV shows have been filmed here.

In fact, it’s also featured a ton in the new Netflix film Finding ‘Ohana .

Of course, the best way to see these sites is by booking a Kualoa Ranch movie tour .

They also offer a plethora of other experiences, including a Jurassic Park ATV tour , ziplining over the Jurassic Valley , horseback riding where they filmed Pearl Harbor , a jungle expedition , and more!

And there you have it! My top Oahu tips for newcomers who want to plan a trip to Oahu like a pro!

How to Plan a Trip to Oahu FAQ

The price really varies depending on where you stay, whether you are renting a car, the types of activities you are booking, and the length of your Oahu trip. It typically costs around $2,000 for one week with two people. Make sure to factor in tipping in Hawaii to your total cost.

If Oahu is the only island you visit, you’ll want to spend 7-10 days . If you are island hopping, you’ll want at least 5 days on Oahu to do all the attractions and explore the island.

The most popular place to stay in Oahu is in Waikiki. That’s where you’ll find the majority of hotels and resorts. Turtle Bay up on the North Shore is popular for people who want to get away from crowds. Ko Olina is the newest area attracting resorts like Disney Aulani.

For the best Oahu travel deals, aim to book your Oahu Hawaii vacation during the off-season. This is mid-April to June in the spring and September to mid- December in the fall. This is also when the weather is pretty mild, and it’s less crowded.
