Summer  season (april-june).

The best season to visit Kedarnath is summer when the temperature is moderate and stays between 15-30 degrees Celsius. The sun is warm and there is a gentle cool breeze that makes the day pleasant. With the weather backing you, this is the ideal time to visit Kedarnath temple, Panch Kedar and Chota Char Dham, among other highlights of the area.

Monsoon Season (July-September)

Kedarnath weather during monsoon is unpredictable. Overall the region doesn’t receive much rainfall, but when it does rain heavily, it could lead to landslides and the possibility of roadblocks. Unless you wish to be adventurous, it is best if you avoid this season and plan your spiritual vacation in the summer.

Winter Season (October-March)

When you are visiting the Himalayas in winter, expect freezing cold temperatures. Winter in Kedarnath will test your endurance and leave you breathless in more ways than one. The landscape is beautiful, but you will have to brave Kedarnath temperatures below freezing point at times. The land does see sunny days, but overall, winter is a cold time in Kedarnath.

Kedarnath in Summer (April to June)

Temperature - Avg. of 30 degrees high to 15 degrees low

Weather - Kedarnath is always cold; it’s just that the degree of coldness varies. The summer months of April, May and June are cool and pleasant, making them perfect for sightseeing. The average temperature is usually around 17 degree Celsius, and with the warm sun for company, you can spend your time walking about the place. Besides visiting the main Kedarnath temple, you can use your time to make a pilgrimage to the other shrines that dot this beautiful mountain town. Lord Shiva is the main presiding deity, but there are temples dedicated to several other gods too.

Kedarnath during summer calls out to adventure seekers. Whether you are spiritually inclined or not, once you are done paying homage at all the temples, you can head off on the many trails scattered around the town. While the climb itself could be a bit difficult, you will find the weather to be perfect for outdoor trekking and hiking.

Significant events - If you happen to be in Kedarnath during June, you will get to experience the colourful Badri Kedar Festival. The entire region is festooned with decorations and the land takes on a festive mood. Summer is the best time and place to witness the culture and traditions of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. For eight whole days, the land is brimming with artists from various parts of Uttarakhand who have come here to display their art. Singers, dancers, painters and other craftspeople use this platform to showcase their talents and also to spread awareness about the history, tradition, culture and beliefs of this Himalayan state.

Why you should visit now - Kedarnath weather doesn’t get any better than in summer. The cold has receded and you will find the weather comfortable for walking around the town and the adjoining areas.

Know before you visit - This is peak tourist season and you will encounter crowds. Be prepared to wait in line at the temples.

Tips - Carry along energy bars and dry fruits when you are outside. Those are perfect for the needed burst of energy in this steep region.

Kedarnath in Monsoon (July to September)

Kedarnath Temperature - Avg. of 27 degrees high to 12 degrees low

Weather - The monsoon in Kedarnath starts in July and continues well into mid- September. While the weather in the monsoon of Kedarnath is not a great time to visit, it still receives a fair share of tourists who come seeking a bit of a thrill. Do take note, the temple of Kedarnath remains shut during this season since the devastating flash floods of 2013. The place is beautiful, no doubt, and adventure seekers make a beeline to the region. This is when trekking and hiking can be doubly exciting, and if the weather cooperates, the climate is actually pleasant. If the area experiences heavy rainfall, the possibility of landslides and thus, blocked roads, increases exponentially. If you must visit in this season, come prepared to enjoy the raw beauty of largely untouched land.

Significant events - A day before the joyful festival of Raksha Bandhan in August is the Shravani Annakoot Mela. This is a colourful fair and is celebrated by the local people to mark the new harvest. On this day, freshly-harvested paddy is offered to the lord’s idol as ‘prasadam’. The phallus-shaped idol of Lord Kedarnath is decorated with a paste made from the fresh grain. Several prayers and other religious rituals are conducted on this day. The festival is a visual treat for tourists, and it also creates a spiritual experience for all those visiting Kedarnath Dham on this day.

Lord Ganesh is Lord Shiva’s son, and his birthday is celebrated with much fanfare in Kedarnath. Vinayak Chaturthi comes around September and Lord Ganesha’s devotees flock to the temple to pay homage to the lord of happiness and prosperity.

Why you should visit now - The monsoon turns the otherwise barren land of Kedarnath into an unending spread of lush green hills and mountains, with gushing streams. It’s perfect for being outdoors.

Know before you visit - You might think that nobody visits Kedarnath in the monsoon, but there are plenty of adventure-seekers like you, so expect to see crowds.

Tips - Carry a monsoon emergency day pack with spare clothes, a poncho, torch, extra batteries, bottle of water and dry fruits.

Kedarnath in Winter(October-March)

Temperature - Avg. of 20 degrees high to 0 degrees low

Weather - Kedarnath during the winter months is rather inhospitable. The area receives heavy snowfall and most roads end up being blocked. The temperature also drops to sub-zero numbers and if you are not accustomed to the cold, it can be quite uncomfortable to be in Kedarnath during winter. The temple too takes a break from the crowds and remains shut all of winter. Heavy snow piles up everywhere and tourists are not encouraged to visit the temple town in winters. The weather of Kedarnath in winter is such that in fact, many locals also leave before winter arrives, turning Kedarnath into a ghost town of sorts. Additionally, the place is shrouded in white, and it gives Kedarnath an ethereal aura.

Significant events - Like any other part of the country, Diwali is celebrated with much enthusiasm in Kedarnath too. This festival of lights sees the region come to life with hundreds of colourful flowers and thousands of glittering lamps that are used to decorate the temple and its surrounding area. This is a big event and many celebrities come to Kedarnath to pay their homage to the deity during this auspicious time. Whether you are a Shiva devotee or not, you must try and experience this festival at Kedarnath at least once in your lifetime.

It is believed that the great sage Adi Shankaracharya breathed his last at Kedarnath. His Samadhi, a shrine dedicated to him, is located just behind the main temple of Kedarnath. Once every year on the closing day of the temple, a Samadhi Puja is conducted. Pilgrims flock to Kedarnath from far to attend this celebration of lights, music and processions. A grand puja is performed inside the Shankaracharya Samadhi and then the sanctum of the main temple is closed for winter. The idol of the presiding deity is shifted to Ukhimath where it continues to be worshipped.

Why you should visit now - Not many people visit Kedarnath during winter. If you are willing to brave the harsh weather, this is a time when you can get good deals on hotels.

Know before you visit - Be prepared for roadblocks. Carry an emergency day pack with you and make sure it includes spare clothes, waterproof woollen gloves, torch, extra batteries, a bottle of water and dry fruits.

Tips - Wear a pair of comfortable, waterproof trekking shoes when you head out on the icy slopes.

People can visit the Kedarnath region if they wish to explore the enchanting beauty of the snow-clad peaks and the region covered with snow during the winter season from October to April.

In the winter season, the idol of Kedarnath shifts from Kedarnath Temple to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. It is situated in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand and remains the winter abode of Lord Kedarnath for six months. Omkareshwar Temple is one of the oldest shrines in India and is among the Panch Kedar. Therefore, pilgrims can visit here and seek blessings from Lord Kedarnath in the winter season.

Kedarnath Temperature in Winter:

  • In October, the temperature ranges from 1°C to 5°C in Kedarnath. The region experiences cold weather. Therefore, it is advisable to carry heavy woolens as the temperature dips at night.
  • The average temperature in Kedarnath in November ranges between -10°C and 4°C. The region starts receiving heavy snowfall, and temples usually close this month on Bhaiya Dooj.

Why visit Kedarnath?

Kedarnath is one of the holiest sites of Lord Shiva. It is also among the Char Dhams in Uttarakhand. This holiest pilgrimage is set amidst the mountainscape of the Garhwal Himalayas at the head of the Mandakini River. The temple is flocked by a large number of pilgrims from all over the country every year seeking salvation. Kedarnath Temple remains open for almost six months and closed for the remaining part of the year. So if you want to visit the abode of a supreme being, book Kedarnath Yatra Packages with Indian Holiday today!

In summer, the region experiences pleasant weather, and it is the best time to visit Kedarnath Yatra. However, the monsoon in Kedarnath is not an advisable season to visit for Yatra as the region experiences heavy downpours. The landslides are common due to rainfall, and if you are planning, it is advisable to keep buffer days in case you get stuck. In winters, Kedarnath experiences snowfall and temperature dips below zero. September and October is the best time to visit Kedarnath in winter and after that, the region starts receiving heavy snowfall. The temple closes in November, mostly two days after Diwali on the day of Bhaiya Dooj.

Things to know before you visit Kedarnath

  • The temple opens from April to October, and for the rest of the year, it remains closed due to heavy snowfall.
  • The best time to visit the temple is from May to June and September to October.
  • It is advisable to avoid harsh winters and monsoon seasons. The region receives heavy snowfall in the winter season, and during the monsoon, the heavy rains cause landslides, leading to road blockage. So always keep buffer days if you plan a trip in the monsoon season.
  • Always keep buffer days if you are planning a trip in the monsoon season.
  • Carry heavy woolens in the winter season. Also, carry sunscreen and sunglasses to avoid sunburn.
  • If you are planning to visit in summer, then carry light woolens.
  • In the monsoon, do not forget to carry an umbrella and raincoat. In addition, a medical kit with painkillers, antiseptic creams, and tablets for fever, cold, cough, and altitude sickness is a must.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy clothes while trekking.
  • Carry a battery-operated torch, fully-charged power banks, and extra batteries for cameras.
  • Only BSNL operates here.
  • Make sure to book accommodation prior as during the peak season there are fewer chances of getting good accommodation at a favorable price.
  • Do not forget to carry important documents including tickets, cash, and photo identity proof.

Planning a trip to Kedarnath? Here’s everything you need to know

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit all of us, we travelled in the third week of October 2020, a trip to Kedarnath via Rishikesh. Corona was posing a huge threat and we were fully aware of it. However, we did quite a bit of reading and understood that Uttarakhand was one of those safe states to travel to. We also learnt that Rishikesh and Kedarnath were less crowded than usual.

Before you read any further, if the pandemic situation is still the same as October 2020, kindly read this to know how we planned our entire trip to Rishikesh and Kedarnath and stayed careful.

Best time to plan a trip to Kedarnath

Every year, on the day of Shivratri, the priests will announce the date of opening and closing the temple. While the temple opens sometime in April, it closes on the day of Bhai Dooj. The remaining six months, Kedarnath faces heavy snow fall during the winter, making it impossible for people to visit.

Nature Kedarnath

Locals told us that beginning of September or just before closing is the right time to visit Kedarnath as the crowd will be lesser. We, however, would suggest October second or third week as the weather is just perfect.

Minimum number of days for a trip to Kedarnath

A trip to Kedarnath requires a minimum of 5 days from either Dehradun or Rishikesh. That’s because the Jolly Grant Airport, the nearest airport to Kedarnath is almost in between Dehradun and Rishikesh, thus serving as a good starting point for a trip to Kedarnath.

Walking Route Kedarnath

Day One: Dehradun Airport to Rishikesh

From Jolly Grant Airport (keeping COVID-19 in mind), we did not want to take public transport after exiting. On a regular day, this would have been the cheapest way to reach Rishikesh. The pre-paid taxis from the Airport could cost anywhere around Rs. 900 – 1200, depending on the location of the hotel/hostel. We walked a few metres away from the airport and saw a few taxi guys who were offering lesser rates to get to Rishikesh. We negotiated and took a taxi for Rs. 700 to Blue Jay Hostels (hostel review coming up soon!).

It takes about 40 minutes to cover approximately 20 km to reach Rishikesh.

A walk in Rishikesh

Mostly the first day will depend on when you reach, check-in etc. However, walking to Laxman Jhula and dinner at one of the famous cafes/restaurants could be a great way to start soaking oneself in this small holy yet hippie town.

Day Two: Rishikesh to Sonprayag

Start at 9 AM from Rishikesh so there is ample time to reach Sonprayag. The usual route to Sonprayag will be via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Agastyamuni/Augustmuni and Phata.

Villages on the way to Sonprayag

This route is about 215 km long and takes 9-11 hours to reach the destination. The construction along the route and the narrow roads leads to traffic jam in each and every corner. Sometimes, because of blasting and road construction, the Devprayag route may be closed. This detour of 30-40 km will add another 2-3 hours of journey time (via Tehri Garhwal).

Interesting things about Devbhoomi

  • Devprayag is a confluence of two rivers – Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. River Saraswathi which originates underground also joins the other two rivers. This confluence forms the river Ganga or Ganges.

Devbhoomi Uttarakhand

  • Dhari Devi Temple between Srinagar and Rudraprayag. This temple is located on the banks of Alaknanda. The people believe that Dhari Devi is the guardian of the Chota Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. The authorities tried to remove the idol of Dhari Devi idol from the original place twice, once in the 1800s and once in 2013. The locals say that this has only resulted in natural calamities. The 2013 flood in Kedarnath washed away many villages and people. The country witnessed one of the worst natural disasters and some of the wounds are still fresh.

Guardian Deity of Uttarakhand

Other than traffic, lunch and tea, we never really stopped. We reached Sonprayag at around 7 pm, covering a distance of approximately 210 km in 10 hours. Yes, the roads were that bad. We checked in to GMVN Sonprayag and luckily got the entire dorm for ourselves.

Kedarnath Walking Route

Day Three: Sonprayag – Phata – Kedarnath

Start at 9 am to Triyugi Narayan Temple. It’s a 10 km drive with stunning views. This temple has a fascinating history and there’s an amazing vibe about the whole place.

Oldest temple in Uttarakhand

Goes without saying, do not miss this temple during your Kedarnath trip 🙂

Kedarnath by Walk / Mules / Helicopters

Kedarnath by walk: The walk to Kedarnath starts from Gaurikund. Private vehicles and taxies are stopped at a check-point in Sonprayag post which there are SUVs which take us to Gaurikund. The walking distance between Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 18 km (although it is mentioned as 16.5 km). The time to cover the distance is anywhere between 6 and 12 hours depending on one’s fitness level. So starting early in the morning will help in reaching Kedarnath before the night sets in.

Walk Kedarnath

Walking down took us exactly 5 hours. We started at 10 AM and reached Gaurikund at 3 PM. We booked a full taxi for ourselves for Rs. 300. Else you will have to share the drive with 8-10 other people which was a big no for us at these times.

Kedarnath on mules: You can go up in mules from multiple points. Costs differ from time to time, and also from the point you wish to take. Food, water and restrooms are all available along the way.

Donkeys in Kedarnath

Kedarnath via helicopter: You can book helicopters in advance. We booked the 12 to 3 pm slot on Pawan Hans and took off from Phata. The helicopter took us from Phata to Kedarnath in exactly takes 9 minutes. You can also book the Prasad at the helicopter base.

Helicopter Kedarnath temple

Visiting the Kedarnath Temple

Once we landed in Kedarnath, we walked a bit and checked-in at Swargrohini Cottages. We reached on time to see the afternoon aarti before they shut the temple. Police ensured no one roams without a mask. If you have time to spare, you can also visit the Bhairavnath Temple, which is on the eastern direction.

Kedarnath Temple exterior

If you are a single traveller, you can also stay in the Rudra Cave which is on the western side. Enjoy the evening aarti which starts at 6 pm and takes place for about an hour. The next morning, at around 5:30 am (please check sunrise time), catch the first rays of the sun hitting the mountains behind the temple. Such sights are magnificent.

You will see long queues to enter the temple. We, however, suggest that you enter the temple after 8 am when the crowds are much lesser. Lesser time in the queue and also more time inside the temple. Win-win, no? 🙂

The stone behind the temple is something you shouldn’t miss. During the 2013 floods, the stone diverted the gushing water to the sides of the temple, saving those who went inside to take refuge. The flood also destroyed the Samadhi of Adi Shankara. You can ask the pandits there to see the idol (we weren’t able to).

Important things to note when planning your trip to Kedarnath

vegetarian food in Uttarakhand

  • E-Pass: Please ensure you have taken two e-passes, 1. Uttarakhand on Smart Dehradun Portal and 2. Individual E Pass for the Char Dham, in this case, for Kedarnath.
  • Commute : We didn’t see any public transport from Rishikesh to Sonprayag. This could be because of the COVID-19 restrictions. It would be best to hire a taxi or go by your own transport (bike/car).
  • Food : There are many small roadside shops and few big tea shops, restaurants that you find on the highways. In Rishikesh, there are many nice Ganga facing cafes/restaurants such as Little Buddha Cafe, Freedom Cafe, VJ’s Pizza and many more. In Kedarnath, you have a lot of options closer to the temple. We recommend Tiwari Hotel & Restaurant.
  • ATM’s : Withdraw cash in advance as ATM’s are few in number. Please note, mostly or only cash accepted. Very few places accept Digital payments.
  • Water : Mostly, natural water, wherever available can be refilled. Less plastic, remember? 🙂
  • Helicopter: There are multiple services. Book your helicopter to Kedarnath .
  • Weather : November to March is heavy snow season, April to June is summer, July to August is usually the rainy season and winter sets in from September.

We had a wonderful darshan and once we came back, we self quarantined ourselves at home and we suggest you do that too. We are glad our trip was safe from the Coronavirus.

We can now safely say, “thank god we took this trip”, and if you are going, stay safe and travel safer!

Kedarnath Weather And Best Time To Visit Kedarnath

Kedarnath is one of the four great pilgrimages in India , located in the hills of Uttarakhand . Being freezing cold throug majority of the year, May to June and September to October are the ideal months to visit Kedarnath. Avoid travelling in the winter months (November to April) as temperatures drop to sub-zero levels and are accompanied by heavy rain. Summer time (May-June) brings an enjoyable climate, ideal for trips to Kedarnath. The monsoons from July to August can occasionally cause heavy flooding and landslides. For more on weather in Kedarnath, read on.

Summer (May – June): Kedarnath Weather And Best Time To Visit Kedarnath

As the weather is generally quite chilly year round, the best months to visit Kedarnath are from May to June, with an average temperature of 15 to 30° C. During this time of the year majority of the visitors are on their pilgrimage and other visitors tend to check out the temples and other trekking routes in and around Kedarnath. The temple of Kedarnath is also only open through the summer months of May to October (Akshay Tritiya to Diwali).

Monsoon (July – August)

Monsoon (July – August): Kedarnath Weather And Best Time To Visit Kedarnath

The rainy season begins in July and wraps up around mid-September. From here on till the winter season begins, is the peak season to visit Kedarnath. However, the monsoons can bring excessive rainfall on occasion, making it less than ideal to visit, with an average climate of 12°C. It is known to be flood-prone, bearing in mind the 2013 floods, resulting in the temple being shut off to be public during this season.

Winter (November – April)

Between November and March, Kedarnath is practically closed to the tourists. The temperatures drop to sub-zero levels and are accompanied by heavy rains, resulting in most people avoiding travel here. The area literally turns into a white ghost town as all the main attractions in the area are shut off to tourists and visitors. Do not visit at this time as the roads are bad, amenities unavailable, and nothing to do.

  • Best Time To Visit Kedarnath: Weather, Temperature, And Season

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath: Weather, Temperature, and Season

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath: Weather, Temperature, and Season

Kailashadhipati, Mahadev, Maheshwara, Gangadhar, Lingeshwara, Natraj, Rudra, and so many more, Lord Shiva has so many names yet no one and nothing is like him in the entire world. He is the supreme Lord of the Universe, the fierce one, the most powerful, he is above and beyond all, and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand is the place where you can witness the divine aura of Kedarnath which literally means ‘Lord of Kedarkhand’ who is none other than Lord Shiva.

Kedarnath Temple

Situated at a height of 11,755 ft in the Garhwal Himalayan range, the Kedarnath temple happens to be one of the twelve jyotirlingas . A pretty famous site in Char Dham yatra , Kedarnath temple has quite some miraculous notions associated with it. The legend has it that Lord Shiva appeared as a Stambha of light in these jyotirlingas and at all these temples, the presence of a lingam represents the origin and infinite Stambha pillar , representing the infinite nature of Lord Shiva.

But what makes Kedarnath temple so special that thousand of devotees flock to the place, despite the restricted time to visit? Kedarnath temple is situated near the Mandakini river. In 2013, the massive flash floods in the Mandakini river damaged thousands of houses but couldn’t even touch the temple. As per the reports, a huge boulder plummeted towards the temple and stopped about 50 feet behind the temple. The sadhus further stated that the boulder diverted the flow of water and saved the Kedarnath temple and the people who took shelter in it. If it is not miraculous then nothing is. This phenomenon added to the popularity of the Kedarnath temple.

The best time to visit Kedarnath

The best time to go to Kedarnath is rather a debatable subject. Being one of the most popular Shiva temples in India , devotees aka Mahakal Ke Bhakt from around the globe come to visit the Kedarnath temple. However, due to extreme climatic conditions, the Kedarnath temple is open for the general public only in April on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and then in the month of Kartik Purnima which falls in November. So, technically these are the best months to visit the Kedarnath temple as the visitors get to visit the temple complex from inside as well.

Although these restrictions leave the tourists with only a handful of opportunities to witness the grandeur of the Kedarnath temple, it does not stop them entirely. Rather than waiting for the best season to visit Kedarnath, they visit whenever there is less crowd which means no pushing around.

Apart from the temple, tourists can also enjoy the magnificent view of the valleys surrounding the Kedarnath temple. If you are booking a Kedarnath travel package , do consider these aforementioned seasons:

Summer Season (April to June)

It is the best time to visit the Kedarnath temple as the temple is open for the general public on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya in April month. The temperature is comparatively pleasant which makes it the best time to travel to Kedarnath. Owing to the pleasant weather, one can find Kedarnath Trekking all the more enjoyable which happens to be quite a rage during the summer season in Kedarnath.

Monsoon Season (July to September)

Although the beauty of Kedarnath is something else altogether in monsoon season, it is probably not the best time to visit Kedarnath. Rain may often lead to landslides in hilly regions, which often can be dangerous. Monsoon season is not a very ideal time to visit the place.

Winter Season (October to March)

The weather in the Himalayas in winter is the coldest. So, if you are up for some skin-numbing and bone-chilling winds, then October to March can be the best time to visit Kedarnath. However, consulting with your travel company before making bookings is advisable. Usually, people avoid the winter season when visiting Kedarnath.

Long story short, the summer season is the best time to visit Kedarnath and can become a memorable time for tourists and travellers alike.

Whether you are a devotee waiting for the best time to visit the Kedarnath temple or an adventure junkie, waiting for the best time to trek in Kedarnath, the humble abode of Lord Shiva will always have something for you, in one way or the other.

kedarnath trip best season

Kedarnath is a divine Hindu settlement situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas, and is situated at an astounding height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges and is thronged by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Also, the Kedarnath trek is stunningly beautiful and quite eclectic, even in the trekking circuit.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it offers a calm atmosphere with a beautifully painted backdrop thanks to the rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it incomparable. A MUST VISIT for one and all.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kedarnath

Kedarnath literally means the Lord of the field, and it is so called because the “crop of liberation” grows here. While it is not certain who constructed the temple or when! One of the earliest references of Kedarnath is in the 7th or 8th century. It is also believed that Adi Shankara died near the sanctuary.

History & Mythology

It is believed that post the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas went on a journey to Banaras in order to repent killing their own and seek blessings from the Lord. But, Shivji wanted to avoid meeting with the brothers, and thus, took solace in Guptakashi.

However, Pandavas were relinquishing in their search for the Lord and when they found him, Shivji decided to take the form of buffalo so that they couldn’t recognize him. Now, when Shivji saw the Pandavas approaching closer, he wanted to hide even further.

Thus, He took the decision to also become invisible by way of going underground. However, brother Bhīma tried hard to stop him from leaving by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

It is however believed that through cosmic energy, the Pandavas were exempted from their sins and Shivji informed that from then onwards He would be present in Jyotirlinga form at Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the most remote of all Chota Char Dham sites. Situated near the Chorabari Glacier – the source of the Mandakini river, Kedarnath is flanked by snow-capped peaks – most prominently the Kedarnath mountain (6,940 mts) and the Kedar Dome (6,831 mts). Located at a distance of 223 KM from Rishikesh, the town is built on a barren stretch of land on the shored of the river.

The town unfortunately suffered extensive destruction during 2013 due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The temple magnificently survived the harsh calamities!

In line with the Himalayan weather, Kedarnath experiences cool summers while the winters are extremely difficult and harsh. Summer is ideal for all sight-seeing, temple visits and experiencing nearby attractions as well. The average temperature is around 17 degrees in the summer.

Monsoon months are difficult and the area has suffered extreme rainfall many times, particularly in 2013. Monsoon weather is around 12 degrees. Winters are cold, complex and inhabitable. The palki of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to its winter abode near Guptakashi – Ukhimath from November to April. Weather in this season is always in the negative!

Buses and shared cabs are available from Haridwar, Rishikesh & Rudraprayag to Sonprayag, the last point until which private vehicles are allowed.

Buses to Rishikesh and Shrinagar are available from ISBT, Kashmiri Gate. From Sonprayag, there is a shared cab facility offered by the government, where the cab will drop you in Gaurikund for a fee.

Helicopter Options

You may even get a helicopter ride if you’re not into trekking (although I strongly recommend the trek!). The services are available from different helipads such as Guptkashi, Sersi, Phata etc.

What to do in Kedarnath

Given that Kedarnath is a religious destination, clearly the centermost attraction are places with mythological connotations.

Kedarnath Temple

Enveloped in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is among the 275 temples of Paadal Petra Sthalams (the most powerful Shiva temples in the world) and is also the most important among the Panch Kedars.

With fresh air synonymous with the hills and stunning views that you have to earn – you will lose all sense of time here! For thousands of year, this place has been worshipped and the energy of the region is that of positivity, hope and beliefs for the future.

Inside the temple, you’ll be greeted with a small hall with images of Parvati as well as the Pandavas. The hall is decorated with statues of Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, Virbhadra and many other deities! There is a conical rock inside the temple which is worshipped as the Sadashiva (forever Shiv).

Made from grey stones which are interlocked with the use of iron clamps – the temple is truly striking in the backdrop of Himalayas.

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small crystal clear lake, also known as Chorabari Tal. This is so because it is situated on the mouth of Chorabari Bamak glacier. Gandhi Sarovar lies on the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh peak at an astounding altitude of 3,900mts above sea level. The lake comes after completed further 4 KMs trek from Kedarnath Temple.

Kalimath is a religious place located on the banks of Saraswati river. Located at a height of 1800 mts, Kalimath is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths in India. Kalimath lies on lap of nature offering salubrious and divine environment. Goddess Kali Temple is located in Kalimath. Legends believe that after killing Raktbeej, Kali Goddess went underneath the ground at this place!

Bhairav Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple on the eastern hill of the lofty Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Bhairav – the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with destruction and devastation. The temple offers some stunning views of the Himalayas and it is a beautiful portion of your journey to Kedarnath!

Gaurikund Temple

Gaurikund temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to myths and legends, this is the place where Goddess Parvati did penance involving ascetic and yoga practices to win over Shiva’s heart. It is believed that Lord Shiva admitted his love for the Goddess here and they then married at Triyuginarayan temple.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, credited with unifying and establishing the main thoughts in Hinduism. At the age 32, he decided to attain moksha at Kedarnath and merged under with the land near the Kedarnath Temple. The samadhi is situated right behind the temple.

What to do around Kedarnath

There is so much to explore around the Kedarnath Temple. So, remember to keep some time at hand to truly immerse yourself into the experience!

Vasuki Tal Lake

Vasuki Tal is a high glacial lake situated at an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet above sea level near Kedarnath Dham. One can spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the placid lake, making for some spectacular views.

Ideally, I would suggest you complete the route in the day time itself, and spend the night at Kedarnath! The trek distance from Kedarnath temple is 8 KMs, initial 3-4 KMs is easy before the ascend begins. The icy Vasuki Tal is just 900 meters downhill from Vasuki top.

Guptkashi is situated 47kms before the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. It is located on the route to Kedarnath on a ridge on the west side of the Mandakini river valley at an elevation of 1,319mts above sea level.

Guptkashi is a religiously important town of Uttarakhand as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhnareshwar temple. A highly revered attraction, Manikarnika Kund is where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet.

Kedarnatha Trek

Kedarnatha trek is in one of the most significantly religious areas, especially in the Hindu Mythology. The Temple of Lord Kedarnatha (Shivji), which sits at the base of the summit, has stood the test of time and is revered amongst spiritual believers.

Millions of pilgrims move mountains to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the Hindu Deity each year. The temple itself lies at the base of the Kedarnath Peak, facing the Kedar Parvat. A beginner level trek, Kedarnath is especially beautiful in the winter months.

One of the most remarkable crests in the Himalayan region, both nature lovers and ardent trekkers tend to enjoy the experience.

Char Dham Yatra

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath , Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Best places to stay near Kedarnath

There is a huge government-run tented colony along with cottages as well as rooms run by GMVN. These are sufficient to home more than a thousand pilgrims and visitors. Also, there are hotels, guest houses, and Dharamshala as well.

A lot of folks have started taking the journey via helicopters and thus stay locations can be Phata, Rampur, Gaurikund, Sitapur etc.

Best places to eat

Unfortunately, the only option for decent food here is the food stalls and roadside dhabas. Food available is mostly north Indian cuisine. Of course, given the highly revered place in Hinduism that Kedarnath holds, it should come as no surprise that alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served/ is prohibited.

Things to keep in mind

  • As instructed by the Uttarakhand government, it is necessary for every traveler to do bio-metric registration. The facility is available online as well. Alternatively, you may also do the same at Sonprayag.
  • You can easily find mules & porters to accompany you on your journey. Do remember to check the prices officially posted so as to avoid paying a larger sum
  • Also, if you are hiring porters or mule owners – remember to check their official IDs
  • It is always wise to avoid the hilly terrain in the monsoon season. Especially given the tragedy of 2013, and how badly Kedarnath was hit. If you are still heading there in the monsoon period – do check with officials and local authorities
  • Photography is not allowed in the temple premises. Be mindful of the fact and abide by the rules of the temple authorities.

Tips when travelling to Kedarnath

  • The trek is 16 KM long and will take you 6 hours, depending on your health
  • Try to start your trek early in the morning to avoid the harshness of the afternoon sun
  • Remember to eat a hearty (though not heavy) breakfast
  • Drink water and stay hydrated. However, do remember to carry your own water bottles.

Kedarnath Weather Today

Weather seasons in kedarnath.

Summer – The month of April through May to the beginning of July is Kedarnath’s summer months. The clean and unspoiled beauty of the nearby valley is enhanced by the comfortable and delightful weather. This is also the busiest time for pilgrimages, when the temperature ranges from 10 to 18 degrees Celsius and, in rare instances, even reaches 22 degrees Celsius. While the evenings are quite frigid and difficult, they are not as difficult as those felt during the winter. The days are nice and comfortable. One may also embark on further sightseeing excursions in the local areas during this time.

Monsoon – The months of early July through early September make up this season. Traveling at this time is not advised, and many services, including helicopter flights, are discontinued at the height of the monsoon season. The number of pilgrims has drastically decreased, which is caused by the area’s continued vulnerability to unforeseen landslides and flooding conditions. The weather even lowers to as low as 10 to 12 degrees Celsius during these months, making sightseeing impossible. However, if you do chance to have a few sunny days, go on your vacation since you may get the best rates on lodging and travel.

Camping in Kedarnath – Since there is only little accommodation at Kedarnath, tourists and pilgrims can also set up tents near the town and enjoy the natural beauty that envelops the town as well as the towering Kedarnath peak in the background.

Staying in Kedarnath

You will find a big Govt tented colony consisted of Tents, Cottage, and rooms just before Kedarnath is operated by GMVN , which are sufficient to accommodate more than a thousand pilgrims and tourists. There are many hotels and lodges around the temple since Kedarnath is a small place. You can find a room upon reaching there.

All the stays and food is extremely basic, the geyser is a big luxury, so don't expect running hot water or room service, you're getting to sleep on a bed at that height is enough in itself.

Nowadays, many tourists take Helicopters to Kedarnath for a day's visit and come back from Kedarnath the same day. They generally stay in these locations: Phata , Rampur,   Gaurikund , Sitapur , Sonprayag , Guptkasthi , etc. For more details check hotels in Kedarnath.

How To Reach Kedarnath By Public Transport

Reach Rishikesh from wherever you are, From Rishikesh, you can take the direct shared cab/bus till Guptkashi, or do multiple shared cabs from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag then Rudraprayag to Guptkashi.

From Guptkashi, another shared cab or one of the less frequent buses till Sonprayag, spend the night at Sonprayag, then early morning leave for Gaurikund (roundhead) and start your 16 km trek from there.

Alternatively, you can also stay at Gaurikund overnight but stay options seem better in Sonprayag.

History of Kedarnath

According to Mahabharata, the Pandavas had built the Kedarnath Temple where they pleased Lord Shiva with their penance. The temple was revived by the great Hindu philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya in the 8 th century CE, when he visited the place with his four disciples. Sadly, the temple was hit by the catastrophic floods of 2013, which engulfed hundreds innocent lives.

Mythology about Kedarnath

There is a famous Hindu mythology related to the origin of Kedarnath temple, which states that after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas went on an anonymous journey to beg mercy from Lord Shiva. After failing multiple times, Bhima was able to find Lord Shiva, who had incarnated as a bull to hide from the Pandavas.

Bhima tried to catch it and hit its hind part with his mace. The injured bull then immersed in the earth and its body parts appeared indifferent places. It is believed that the hind part of the bull appeared at Kedarnath, from which a ' Jyotirlinga ' or light flickered and Lord Shiva appeared in his divine avatar.

It is said that after taking the blessings of the cosmic light, the Pandavas were exempted of their sins and Lord Shiva told them, “from now onwards, I will be present here as a triangular shaped Jyotir Linga and by paying obeisance at Kedarnath, the devotees would attain piety". From then onwards, a triangular shaped rock is worshiped in the ' Garbhagriha ' or the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The other four parts of Lord Shiva fell at Tungnath , Rudranath , Madhmaheshwar and Kapleshwar . Kedarnath along with these four are also described as Panch Kedar.

Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks.

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary.

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Here's a regional breakdown of the primary tourist seasons in Vietnam:

  • High Seasons: North: September to November, March and April; Central: April to August; South: October to April
  • Shoulder Seasons: North: December to February, May to August; Central: September to March; South: September to December
  • Low Season: North: May to October; Central: September to May; South: May to September

Before you start planning your trip, read on to learn about the best times to visit Vietnam for hiking the majestic, mountainous rice terraces of Sa Pa, cruising the limestone marvels of Ha Long Bay, and avoiding the rainy monsoon season.

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south.

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss.

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

  • Benjamin Kreuz is the general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz.

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities.

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April.

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train.

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators).

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season.

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns.

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts.

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.
