  • Description

For members of the social elite in eighteenth-century England, extended travel for pleasure came to be considered part of an ideal education as well as an important symbol of social status. Italy, and especially Rome—a fashionable, exciting, and comfortable city—became the focus of such early tourists’ interest. In this distinctive book, historian Jeremy Black recreates the actual tourist experiences of those who traveled to Italy on a Grand Tour. Relying on the private diaries and personal letters of travelers, rather than on the self-conscious accounts of literary travelers who wrote for wider audiences, the book presents a fresh and authentic picture of how British tourists experienced Italy, its landscapes, women, food, music, Catholicism, and more.

Using material from archives across Britain and a generous selection of illustrations, the book highlights the discrepancy between the idealized view of the Grand Tour and its reality: what people were meant to do was not necessarily what they did, what the guide books described as splendid was not always so perceived. Black discusses what Italian experiences meant to British visitors, and he considers the effects of tourism on British culture during this most exciting of centuries.

Review of: Jeremy Black, Italy and the Grand Tour (Yale: New Haven and London, 2003) in History Today , 54/9 (2004). [Author's Original Version (AOV)].

Profile image of Timothy Wilks

2004, History Today

In his third book on the Grand Tour and his first concentrating wholly on Italy, Jeremy Black maintains his heavy reliance upon eighteenth-century manuscript accounts ‘to provide the real tourist experience’. His new haul is a rich variety of responses in which the freshness of recent travel is preserved. Discovering such delightful passages as ‘He talks in raptures of the gigantic antiquities of Agrigentum and Selinimtum and laying very comfortably to sleep (like Ariel in a cowslip’s bell) in the flute of a broken column’ are the rewards of long toil among the archives. In this article I explore various current myths that lead foreigners, especially North Europeans and North Americans, to choose to visit/live in Florence or Tuscany for a while or forever. Is it possible to discern any shared, collective representations? If so, how do such myths fit into the contemporary everyday life of the city? Can we identify a pathway from the aesthetic quest for “authentic” Italian life to cultural encounters with Italians in the flesh? My hypothesis is that one of the leitmotifs of foreigners’ experiences is a romantic, and to a lesser degree, intellectual approach towards “Florence without Florentines”. If so, there is nothing new “Under the Tuscan Sun”: the Grand Tour narrative is alive and kicking. Contemporary experiences of Florence and Tuscany continue to be shaped by the social imaginary inherited from the early nineteenth century. Travellers and sojourners come to Florence with a set of expectations shaped through filmic and literary representations and see what they expect to see, not least because the Italians are equally complicit in performing their part in this ritualised experience.

Through an analysis of the accounts of English travellers in Naples between 1816 and 1841, the objective of this paper is to attempt to identify an image of the city and its inhabitants without following the direction of the usual negative stereotypes common to much of the literature associated with the “Grand Tourist”, a literature to which scholars and readers from the 16th to the 19th century were used. The research also aims to demonstrate through previously unknown and unheeded sources that there weren't only those English travellers on their Grand Tour of the post-Restoration Bourbon Mezzogiorno (Southern Italy) looking for an opportunity of comparing their own civilization (which was considered far superior) to a more fragile reality. There were also other British people who had identified, with a critical eye and spirit of observation, the existence of a Naples and a South which didn't merely represent the sum of stereotypes and fallacies handed down through the centuries, and thus refusing the obvious, predictable and false approach given by their own countrymen.

What is next for The Grand Tour trio?

Will jeremy clarkson, richard hammond and james may work together again.

Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May 's final episode on The Grand Tour is coming this September, so what are they planning to do next?

Off screen the trio have been friends for 20 years. Recently, Hammond told Yahoo of their friendship : "We've worked together a very long time and been lucky to share some simply incredible experiences that none of us ever thought would come our way. And not just share them with our mates but share them with a global audience which, again, we never thought we'd have the opportunity to do."

They become global stars when they started as presenters on BBC's Top Gear in 2003. When Clarkson got fired for punching Top Gear's producer, May and Hammond stuck with him and quit the show saying: "We come as a package."

Then they launched rival car show The Grand Tour with Prime Video in 2015. After many successful seasons, the three friends decided it was time to part ways with the show. Their last episode has been filmed and will air in September.

We take a look at what the trio are getting up to...

Jeremy Clarkson

Clarkson has had great success with his record-breaking Prime Video series Clarkson's Farm, that documents life on Diddly Squat Farm including all the trials and tribulations. Filming for a fourth series is underway and they have no plans on slowing down the series any time soon.

His girlfriend Lisa Hogan said: "As long as it's educating people, and showing people how difficult farming is, and it's helping people appreciate food in a way that they may not have before. Maybe people will pop their bread in the freezer instead of throwing it out when they see how much work goes into making a loaf of bread."

In his personal life, Clarkson's Farm fans would love to see Clarkson ask Hogan to marry him .

Richard Hammond

Meanwhile, Hammond has teamed up with his daughter Izzy again for the second season of their podcast Who We Are Now. The podcast was born out of a conversation with his daughter about men's mental health. It's something they are incredibly passionate about, especially as Hammond suffered a brain injury in 2006 after a crash.

The first episode of the new season will be available for fans to listen to on Tuesday. May appeared on the first season of their podcast and we can't wait to see when Clarkson signs up!

The presenter teased details of the new series on his Instagram. He wrote: "We’ve been chatting to some amazing guests and cannot wait for you to hear their stories, challenges, advice and more. And keep your eyes peeled for a special extra episode this Friday.

"Thank you again for all your support, we really appreciate it. Talking about mental health is so important, and I hope by listening to us ramble away you might feel a tiny bit less alone."

Alongside The Grand Tour, May had launched his own solo series Our Man with Prime Video. It's a travel series that sees him travel to the country and throw himself into the culture. His latest series was released this year, Our Man in India. Before India, May had enjoyed exploring to Japan and Italy.

Of course, it begs the question, will the three of them work together again? And what for?

But last week, May admitted it was "unlikely" they would ever make a car show together again. He told the Today podcast: "We're not going to make another series together about cars."

He added: "We have to accept we've done it for nearly 22 years. When I started doing it in 2003, I thought this was a bit of a laugh and maybe it would last a few years."

After eight years, The Grand Tour is coming to an end, with one final special on the way later this year - and we finally know just when we can expect it to arrive on Prime Video .

This is thanks to James May, who has revealed the month of release while speaking during a live recording of The Today Podcast with Amol Rajan and Nick Robinson.

During the interview, May said of the final episode of The Grand Tour: "I’m not allowed to tell you what date it’s coming out, so I won’t say that it’s September. I can say anything I want now, frankly."

May also spoke on the emotional nature of the filming and recording for the final episode, and said he didn't expect to ever make another series about cars with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond all stood in the desert with their hands on their hips

He said: "I recorded today the last piece of voice-over I will ever record for The Grand Tour – and therefore in that whole legacy of Grand Tour, Top Gear and the few things I did before that.
