- Description
For members of the social elite in eighteenth-century England, extended travel for pleasure came to be considered part of an ideal education as well as an important symbol of social status. Italy, and especially Rome—a fashionable, exciting, and comfortable city—became the focus of such early tourists’ interest. In this distinctive book, historian Jeremy Black recreates the actual tourist experiences of those who traveled to Italy on a Grand Tour. Relying on the private diaries and personal letters of travelers, rather than on the self-conscious accounts of literary travelers who wrote for wider audiences, the book presents a fresh and authentic picture of how British tourists experienced Italy, its landscapes, women, food, music, Catholicism, and more.
Using material from archives across Britain and a generous selection of illustrations, the book highlights the discrepancy between the idealized view of the Grand Tour and its reality: what people were meant to do was not necessarily what they did, what the guide books described as splendid was not always so perceived. Black discusses what Italian experiences meant to British visitors, and he considers the effects of tourism on British culture during this most exciting of centuries.

Review of: Jeremy Black, Italy and the Grand Tour (Yale: New Haven and London, 2003) in History Today , 54/9 (2004). [Author's Original Version (AOV)].
2004, History Today
In his third book on the Grand Tour and his first concentrating wholly on Italy, Jeremy Black maintains his heavy reliance upon eighteenth-century manuscript accounts ‘to provide the real tourist experience’. His new haul is a rich variety of responses in which the freshness of recent travel is preserved. Discovering such delightful passages as ‘He talks in raptures of the gigantic antiquities of Agrigentum and Selinimtum and laying very comfortably to sleep (like Ariel in a cowslip’s bell) in the flute of a broken column’ are the rewards of long toil among the archives. In this article I explore various current myths that lead foreigners, especially North Europeans and North Americans, to choose to visit/live in Florence or Tuscany for a while or forever. Is it possible to discern any shared, collective representations? If so, how do such myths fit into the contemporary everyday life of the city? Can we identify a pathway from the aesthetic quest for “authentic” Italian life to cultural encounters with Italians in the flesh? My hypothesis is that one of the leitmotifs of foreigners’ experiences is a romantic, and to a lesser degree, intellectual approach towards “Florence without Florentines”. If so, there is nothing new “Under the Tuscan Sun”: the Grand Tour narrative is alive and kicking. Contemporary experiences of Florence and Tuscany continue to be shaped by the social imaginary inherited from the early nineteenth century. Travellers and sojourners come to Florence with a set of expectations shaped through filmic and literary representations and see what they expect to see, not least because the Italians are equally complicit in performing their part in this ritualised experience.

Through an analysis of the accounts of English travellers in Naples between 1816 and 1841, the objective of this paper is to attempt to identify an image of the city and its inhabitants without following the direction of the usual negative stereotypes common to much of the literature associated with the “Grand Tourist”, a literature to which scholars and readers from the 16th to the 19th century were used. The research also aims to demonstrate through previously unknown and unheeded sources that there weren't only those English travellers on their Grand Tour of the post-Restoration Bourbon Mezzogiorno (Southern Italy) looking for an opportunity of comparing their own civilization (which was considered far superior) to a more fragile reality. There were also other British people who had identified, with a critical eye and spirit of observation, the existence of a Naples and a South which didn't merely represent the sum of stereotypes and fallacies handed down through the centuries, and thus refusing the obvious, predictable and false approach given by their own countrymen.
