VIew DEALS

What is American Forces Travel?

American Forces Travel (AFT) is a new site launched with Priceline that offers discounted travel prices to military service members and their dependents. Despite there being many unofficial sites that boast discounted travel prices for military, AFT is the ONLY official joint service owned leisure travel service for the military community.

Priceline.com a company with over 20 years of online travel expertise, won out the opportunity to sponsor AFT over other travel discount sites in a competitive bidding process AFT was launched as an initiative by five military branches of service and the Office of the Secretary of Defense to provide a modernized, streamlined method for booking travel and vacation packages for the military community.  Previously, most non-official travel for military had been orchestrated through base tickets and tour offices; AFT provides a platform where military members can search for special travel deals online.

What Sets American Forces Travel Apart From Other Discount Sites?

  • AFT boasts up to 60% savings on more than a million hotel deals in more than 76,000 destinations worldwide.
  • AFT offers reduced fees for reservation changes and all flights cancellable within 24 hours.  With AFT, there is also free cancellation on post-paid cars as well as cancellation discounts for pre-paid rates.
  • AFT offers 24/7 customer support.
  • There is a commission that goes towards military Morale, Welfare, and Recreation services and military quality of life programs with each transaction on the AFT site.
  • Although Priceline.com offers similar discounts and deals for the general public, Priceline has a special team dedicated to the AFT site to search for the best prices specifically for military members.
  • Priceline offers the same lowest price guarantee on AFT as it does on its main site.  If a better price or deal is found for any travel arrangements within 24 hours of booking, Priceline will refund 100% of the price difference.

Who is Eligible to Use American Forces Travel?

  • Full-benefit retirees and dependents
  • 100% disabled veterans and dependents
  • Medal of Honor recipients and dependents

What Types of Discounts Does American Forces Travel Offer?

  • Travel packages

AFT hopes to also offer discounts on theme parks and other attractions at a future date

Does American Forces Travel Really Deliver Discounts to the Military Community?

A review done by Military.com of the American Forces Travel site uncovered that on travel to San Diego, hotel deals ranging $20-$50 dollars less than prices found on regular travel discount sites and $10-$18 off per day for vehicle rentals.  According to the same review, a round-trip Alaska Airlines flight from Washington, D.C. to San Diego for one February weekend was $354, while on American Forces Travel the same round-trip flight was only $323.  However, non-stop flights for the same weekend could be purchased on United Airlines for $200-$400 less on a travel discount site other than AFT.

Discounts on hotels seems to vary by season and by room type. For example, a cursory search on AFT for hotels in Seattle, WA during the month of August showed variance in discounted prices when compared to prices on other discount travel sites, ranging from prices on AFT being $10-$20 higher than to $10-$30 lower than on other travel sites. It did seem that there were better discounts on searches for double occupancy rooms than on searches for rooms for more than two people, which could signify that when looking for hotels, AFT offers better discounts for groups travelling with less people as opposed to families with children or larger groups.

Discounts on automobile rentals also vary by auto type and rental by day or by week. Cruise prices also appear to vary based on season or berthing type.

In short, there is probably still no substitute for doing the research when one is looking for good deals on travel. AFT probably does offer significant discounts for military members but not necessarily on every travel item nor in every circumstance, so it is still important to search for deals and discounts using various resources.

It’s important to consider, too, that AFT launched only within the past few months and still has plans to expand its scope and improve its services. It would be well worth providing further analysis after the site has been up and running for a year or two.

At the very least American Forces Travel puts another discount travel booking tool in the back pockets of military members and their dependents and can be considered a legitimate means to secure the best price for all leisure travel needs.

American Forces Travel Privileges Extended to Eligible Veterans

The Department of Defense announced today a policy change to the current shopping privileges on the American Forces Travel website. As directed by acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Virginia S. Penrod in a memo signed April 12, 2021, the department will extend online access to the website to honorably discharged veterans of the uniformed services.

On average, customers save 35-40% compared to commercial travel pricing by using AFT. This includes discounted rates on hotels (up to 60%), airfare, rental cars, vacation packages, event tickets, and cruises.

“Sixteen million veterans will now be able to access the American Forces Travel website, joining the 10 million active duty, Guard and reserve service members, family members, DOD civilians, and other patrons who are already receiving the benefit,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy Patricia “Patty” Montes Barron. “We are committed to providing quality-of-life programs to our military community, which includes our honorably discharged veterans.”

The change will not affect access for existing patrons, and the increased customer base will allow AFT to negotiate better prices for its customers.

AFT launched in 2019 as the only official joint service morale, welfare, and recreation leisure travel website exclusively for DOD patrons. In addition to improving access to DOD’s MWR benefits, every booking on American Forces Travel generates revenue to support critical quality-of-life programs for service members and families.

To access the exclusive military discount pricing on travel products, visit the American Forces Travel website . Proof of eligibility is required.

SPACE-A TRAVEL LETS MILITARY MEMBERS FLY FOR FREE

can you travel for free in the military

What Is Space-A Travel?

These flights can happen domestically or internationally, but if there's room and it doesn’t interfere with the aircraft’s mission, among other regulations, eligible passengers have a chance to fly on the aircraft for free.

It should be noted, however, that for AMC's Patriot Express flights, there's usually a charge, which is a tax for the privilege.

Who Can Use Space-A Travel?

  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
  • U.S. Air Force.
  • U.S. Coast Guard.
  • U.S. Marine Corps.
  • U.S. Public Health Service.

Space-A travel for disabled Veterans is also available when those eligible can match flights with the capacity for such passengers.

Rank, time of service, and military branch may be taken into consideration; however, this privilege is conducted on an equal basis. It also cannot be used if it were to interfere with a DoD mission.

Those in uniform can travel but only when they are on leave. Travelers can’t use the trip for financial gain, including seeking employment, nor can Space-A travel be used together with travel needed due to a member’s service.

Those eligible for Space-A travel military perks must sign up at the passenger terminal of departure, which is managed locally by a Space-A register.

These locations maintain the registry and will present those who sign up into categories involving the nature of travel, their signup date, and the time of signing up.

Applicants will receive categories based on their status, assessing the priority of their need to travel from 1 to 6, with 1 being the most urgent. Those with numbers of higher priority are given a place over those with lower priority.

Those using the program won’t know the number of seats available until the flight's "Roll Call," which occurs right before departure.

If there's not enough seating for everyone, cuts are made, but if everyone has enough seating, then everyone boards and departs on their journey.

Space-A Travel Basics You Should Know

Before you go, you should know that only service members and retirees and their families are eligible for Space-A travel. Be sure to look at the fine print of this rule, as there are some exceptions that may be applicable to your individual circumstance.

After you book your flight, be sure to keep track of the boarding times, flight information, and departure schedule by checking the Facebook page for your terminal. Most airports regularly update these pages in real-time.

Lastly, be sure to check the terms and conditions of payment. Usually, the flights are free of charge, but you still should contact the Air Mobility Command passenger terminal of the airport to double check.

Where You Can Find the Program

To find more information about AMC flights, visit the AMC Travel Site, specifically the Passenger Terminal Page. Here, you can click on the "+" sign to find more details about passenger terminals. If you are interested in learning more about an individual terminal, be sure to click the link to their webpage to find more information about the schedule and past flight data.

This program can take you throughout the world, or at least to most places, it’s important to remember that rules and regulations in accordance with international laws and the laws of other countries will apply.

Is Space-A Travel Available Now?

As AMC and the U.S. Navy handle the vast majority of the Space-A Travel Program, this is a huge step in the right direction.

The price and hassle of flying are necessary evils to get where we need to go in a reasonable time frame, but a free flight with some of the most talented pilots in the world is a no-brainer.

On top of it all, for many, this could be a very unique flying experience and a great option for those who cannot afford a flight.

Space-A is back, and it's a welcomed sight to behold as the military community can enjoy a unique perk of working in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Military TSA PreCheck

Traveling through airport security can be a hassle. Thankfully, military members are eligible to participate in TSA PreCheck for free. This allows them to bypass the normal security line and avoid the inconvenience of taking off your shoes, belt, and jacket. You can also leave your computer and your toiletries in your carry-on bag. This is a great program that will save you a ton of time and hassle when you travel by air!

The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) PreCheck passenger screening program was designed to allow certain individuals to bypass the normal security lines and go through the PreCheck security lines.

And if you are in the military, you should be eligible to participate in this program, free of charge. You may also be eligible to participate for free if you are a Wounded Warrior or a DoD civilian employee. Let’s dive in and look at the TSA PreCheck passenger screening program, who it applies to, and how to use it.

What is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck offers expedited security screening at more than 120 participating U.S. airport checkpoints. Travelers can get through screening stations faster because the lines are typically shorter and move more quickly because travelers are not required to remove their:

  • Light outerwear/jacket,
  • 3-1-1 compliant bag (toiletries in a zip lock baggie),
  • or laptop from their carry-on.

Who is eligible for TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is available to some individuals that the TSA deems as low-risk travelers. TSA uses different systems to determine who they consider low-risk. This can include certain frequent flyers of participating airlines, members of the TSA PreCheck application program, or participants of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler program (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI). It is also open to military members, even when you are traveling for personal reasons.

Children under age 12, traveling with an eligible adult: Accompanying passengers 12 and younger are allowed through TSA PreCheck lanes when traveling with eligible passengers (parent or guardian).

Eligible Military Members / Wounded Warriors / DoD Civilians:

TSA offers expedited screening to all members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those serving on active duty, and serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserves, and National Guard. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces can participate by using their official Department of Defense (DoD) identification number when making flight reservations. Your 10-digit DoD ID number can be found on the back of your Combined Access Card (CAC) ID (Note: your DoD ID number is not your Social Security Number).

Eligible military travelers include:

  • Active Duty, Guard, Reserves
  • Wounded Warriors  (please see this link to verify who qualifies).
  • Service Academy Students are eligible as of November 2014.
  • DoD and Coast Guard Civilians are also eligible if they opt-in to the program through the MilConnect website .

This program is not free of charge for all veterans based on their military service, however, you may be eligible for the program through other means (listed below).

What about military retirees? I have heard different reports from veterans that they were able to get the TSA PreCheck as a retiree, while others were not able to do so. If you are a retiree, you should have a DoD ID number (this will be located in your MilConnect account, or on a CAC ID Card). Use the DoD ID number as your Known Traveler Number when purchasing airline tickets. I cannot guarantee it will work, but it is worth trying.

How to Use TSA PreCheck

CAC Card - DoD Number

To use TSA PreCheck as a military member, you will need to have a CAC ID Card. You will need to use the DoD ID number on the back of your CAC Card and enter it as the “Known Traveler Number” when making official travel or leisure airline reservations.

Once you make your reservations and print your boarding pass, you will see a TSA PreCheck Notification on your boarding pass. It should have logo that displays any of the following: “TSA Pre?™,” “TSA PRE” or “TSA PRECHK.” It will look something like the image below (image courtesy of TSA).

TSA PreCheck Boarding Passes

If your boarding pass has one of those images, then you can go straight to the TSA PreCheck line instead of waiting in the general line (unless TSA PreCheck isn’t available at that specific airport, in which case you go to the general line).

Add your DoD ID Number to Your Travel Profiles

You can save your DoD ID Number in your DTS account and with your frequent flyer programs for participating airlines. This will make it easier to ensure your number is automatically added as your Known Traveler ID. You should only have to do this once for your DTS account, and once for each frequent flyer program in which you participate. Here is a list of participating airlines .

All current military members should have a standard CAC ID Card, so they should be able to get their DoD ID number from that. If you are a retiree and don’t have a CAC Card, or if the number is not on your CAC, you may obtain it by logging on to milConnect .  You will find your ID number under the “My Profile” tab (again, I don’t know for certain this works for retirees). Here is more information from the Defense Travel Management Office .

What if You No Longer Have any Military Affiliation?

The TSA PreCheck program is open to :

  • U.S. citizens of frequent flyer programs who meet TSA-mandated criteria and who have been invited by a participating airline.
  • U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents with a Known Traveler Number (KTN), sometimes referred to as a trusted traveler number.
  • U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who are members of the TSA Pre?® application program.
  • Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reserves, and National Guard.
  • Department of Defense and U.S. Coast Guard civilian employees.
  • All members of Global Entry .
  • U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS.
  • U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who are members of SENTRI .

You can also apply through the TSA PreCheck application program . This has an $85 non-refundable fee, which is used to cover the cost of the associated background checks.

Hello Sis Rose, I do not believe this is available for spouses of veterans. We paid the regular price for my wife and it has been wonderful when traveling. I wish you the best!

Doug, do active duty military automatically get GLOBAL ENTRY status, as they do TSA PreCheck? I have not been able to get clarification anywhere on the internet. All military references are to TSA PreCheck.

November 20, 2019 at 4:33 pm

Hello Donna, I haven’t seen anything that automatically gives Global Entry status to military members. I believe they are required to apply for the program and pay the application fee.

Boarding, Baggage & More: A Brief Guide To Delta Air Lines' Military Travel Benefits

  • Delta offers perks for US military including free baggage and pre-boarding, benefiting active duty members and veterans.
  • Military personnel can bring pets on Delta flights, but there are restrictions and fees based on the destination.
  • Delta provides a special discount for military members through Delta Vacations, allowing savings on flight and hotel packages.

Several airlines offer different benefits for active duty US military personnel, veterans, and their families. While the perks may vary during different times of the year, they can be a big help for those currently serving or who have served regarding their travel plans. Some military personnel may fly home after duty or head to duty. Regardless, Delta Air Lines has a plethora of benefits, including through its all-inclusive vacation branch, Delta Vacations.

The Atlanta-based US legacy carrier offers benefits for active members of the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. As the airline’s way of expressing gratitude to those who protect and serve the US, Delta has special policies for military personnel, such as pet travel and early boarding. Most checked baggage is also free of charge, whether on travel orders or leisure trips. The benefits also extend beyond the flight, as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows members of the US Armed Forces to receive expedited security screenings via TSA PreCheck at the airport.

Honoring those who have served or currently serve

Delta allows active duty US military members with an ID to pre-board flights, meaning they can board the aircraft before Delta One or first-class passengers. The perk is beneficial, especially if the flight is completely full. It allows military personnel to settle into their seats and relax before the hustle and bustle of the other travelers fills the cabin.

Pre-boarding is also available for passengers needing assistance getting on the aircraft or additional boarding time. Active duty members are also “allowed more free bags than civilian customers.” According to Veteran.com , Delta awards as many as five free checked bags with a limit of 100 pounds each to military personnel when on travel orders. This is incredibly accommodating if they bring a lot of equipment or personal belongings should their duty last several months. If they are traveling personally, two free checked bags are allowed with a limit of 50 pounds each.

Delta Air Lines Delays Tel Aviv Return After Extensive Security Assessment

The baggage benefit is undoubtedly a perk, considering Delta recently raised its checked baggage fees to civilian passengers. Following several other airlines increasing their fees, Delta now charges its Comfort+ and main cabin travelers $35 each way for the first standard checked bag under 50 pounds, while one free carry-on bag and a personal item are still allowed.

For passengers checking a second bag under 50 pounds, it will cost them $45 each way. Of course, military personnel, as well as Delta One or first class passengers, are exempt from these charges. Travelers with the Delta SkyMiles American Express Card or Medallion Status are also not subject to baggage fees.

Medical emergency flights

Travel privileges are also extended to war-injured immediate family members or domestic partners. According to Delta, those individuals are classified under its Medical Emergency policy, which offers flight discounts. To book a medical emergency flight, the person must provide their name and relationship to their injured family member or domestic partner. Additionally, they would need to provide the name and phone number of the military hospital where their relative or loved one is recieving care. Delta defines immediate family members as:

  • Domestic partners
  • Stepsiblings
  • Stepchildren
  • Grandparents
  • Grandchildren
  • Father-in-law
  • Mother-in-law
  • Sister-in-law
  • Brother-in-law
  • Daughter-in-law

The carrier's website lists more information on the prices of its medical emergency flights. Immediate family members will need to call the airline to book a flight.

Pet travel & Delta Vacations

Military personnel can also travel with their pets. Delta only accepts animals as checked baggage for US military or active duty US State Department Foreign Service Officers and their spouses with active transfer orders. However, checking their pet does come with a fee, and it depends on where the individual is traveling. On flights within the US, US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, the cost is $200 to check their pet. I

t is also $200 for international flights to and from Canada or the Caribbean. Travel to and from Brazil is a $150 checked pet fee. All fees are charged each way. Checked pets are prohibited on flights to Australia, Barbados, Hong Kong, Iceland, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, Senegal, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

There is a variety of acceptable pets, but there are some restrictions. According to the airline, military personnel may transport two crates per flight. However, larger crates may only be shipped as cargo, which could result in additional restrictions depending on the aircraft and class of service. Cats are permitted, except for snub-nosed cats. Dogs are allowed as well, minus pug breeds or other snub-nosed dogs. Other acceptable animals only within US domestic flights include household birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters.

Other animals are allowed but must be shipped as cargo. These include reptiles and primates – lemurs, monkeys, orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees. The fee is charged each time the pet is checked in at the airport and will be assessed at each stopover point. Delta says exceptions may apply to flight itineraries with connections over six hours. However, animals are not included with the free baggage privileges granted to military personnel or eligible Delta SkyMiles members.

Lastly, the airline honors military personnel by offering a special discount on Delta Vacations. This perk can allow individuals to save up to $200 per flight and hotel vacation package to any of its 300+ destinations worldwide. Here are the current discounts offered:

  • $25 off vacations that cost up to $1,499
  • $75 off vacations priced between $1,500 and $3,999
  • $125 off vacations that cost from $4,000 to $6,999
  • $200 off vacations priced at $7,000 or more

All eligible personnel are encouraged to contact the airline for more details about all of its military perks.

Active & Retired Military: Travel Deals for Military Personnel

  • Types of Travel

There are hundreds of resources available to US veterans and active military members. But they’re not always easy to find and use, especially when it comes to travel offers.

But there are plenty of resources out there designed to simplify the process of finding and using military discounts for flights, tours, hotels, and more .

You might be thinking about the Armed Forces Vacation Club or WeSalute Club (both are solid options). But there’s no need to join a formal club to access savings.

In fact, you can find dozens of offers without joining a travel group.

Below, I cover the best travel deals for military personnel.

The focus is on flights and hotels, which are usually the priciest part of booking a trip. These deals are available from official state-sponsored initiatives and informal discounts offered by leading travel brands.

Let’s dive in.

American Forces Travel: Priceline Meets the DoD

The first stop for all active and retired military members is American Forces Travel . This platform works just like any classic booking site, letting users seek out flights, car rentals, and bundled deals.

There are specific experiences available, too, including cruises and events. This makes it similar to a military travel club—aside from one primary difference.

This platform is the brainchild of the Department of Defense and Priceline’s affiliate program. (It isn’t Priceline—just a partner.) As far as I can tell, this makes it the most robust travel resource for retired and active military members, especially when it comes to flights.

But before you dive in, make sure to read the fine print on the FAQ page . Despite the diverse range of options on American Forces Travel, there seem to be quite a few terms.

Airline Discounts

Airlines (like many other US businesses) show their support for the military by offering discounts to active and retired members. You can find these using platforms like WeSalute—or you can explore for yourself using this list.

Here are the US airlines that offer discounts for active and retired military members:

  • American Airlines : up to 10% off international and domestic tickets
  • Alaska Airlines: up to 5% off international flights leaving US and Canada
  • Hawaiian Airlines : up to 5% off economy seats from US to Hawaii
  • JetBlue: up to 5% off international and domestic tickets and free phone bookings
  • Lufthansa: up to 5% off transatlantic flights, plus 5% discount with Austrian, Swiss, and Brussels Airlines
  • Southwest: Lowest fares offered to veterans and active members
  • United Airlines: up to 5% off international and domestic tickets

Hotel Discounts

Hotel discounts are varied. They change depending on factors like the height of the season and availability. In other words, companies might not be able to offer discounts when they’re fully booked during the 4 th of July or New Year’s Eve.

That being said, retired and active military members do have quite a few options. Here are some of the best:

  • Best Western : discounts for military and government personnel in US & Canada
  • Hilton: Hilton offers discounts to active and retired military, and military families
  • IHG Hotels (Intercontinental Hotel Group): This massive parent company owns brands like Holiday Inn, Candlewood Suites, and many more. There are over 6,000 IHG hotels worldwide—most of which offer discounts to miliary members and even military families
  • Radisson Hotels: Radisson is part of the US’s Military 1 st Program, which means active and retired members get discounts and room upgrades

Additionally, you might want to look into resorts that are part of the Armed Forces Recreation Centers program. These are easily accessible to families of active and retired military members.

Choose from four locations:

  • Dragon Hill Lodge (Korea)
  • Edelweiss Lodge and Resort (Germany)
  • Hale Koa Resort (Hawaii)
  • Shades of Green (Walt Disney World, Florida)

Free bus travel for military on Armed Forces Day

A bus company is commemorating Armed Forces Day by offering free travel for those in the military and veterans.

First Bus, which operates in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, is scrapping fares for those wearing their military uniforms and/or medals from the Royal Navy, Marines, Air Force and any other associated cadet force.

Free travel will be available for these people on Saturday and Sunday across the region.

Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Suffolk, Ken Rowbottom, said it was a "most welcomed" initiative.

"I think it's a great idea and one welcomes the support that a large service provider such as First Bus gives to our armed forces in recognition of what they do."

Mr Rowbottom added that the cost of living crisis and increased prices were impacting veterans especially.

"A lot of them are sadly on limited pensions and reduced income so any help that is available is more than welcome," he said.

The chairman added commemorating Armed Forces Day was "very important" to thank those in service.

'Thanking and honouring'

Piers Marlow, managing director of the bus service in the East of England, added that Armed Forces Day was "an important occasion".

"Armed Forces Day is an important occasion for many people across the UK who want to remember and commemorate those who have been lost in military service," he explained.

He said the free travel initiative was the providers way of "thanking and honouring" current and former service men and women.

Free travel is also being offered if a person is in possession of a current Ministry of Defence (MOD) issued card with their branch of military stated.

A veteran displaying identification such as the MOD Veteran Badge or their medals can also be used.

This North Carolina hidden gem provides a sense of peace and tranquility free of charge

can you travel for free in the military

From overlooked roadside attractions to offbeat museums and obscure natural wonders, Local Hidden Gems will showcase some of the unique and unexpected treasures that make America extraordinary. We will emphasize charm, surprise and delight.

Local hidden gem:  New Hanover County Arboretum

With the North Carolina beaches getting crowded with tourists, you may find yourself wanting to escape the business of it all and might even be searching for more cost-effective options.

Although this spot in Wilmington, North Carolina, has an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 visitors each year, receptionist MaryBeth Beasley said some lifelong residents tell her they have just discovered it.

The New Hanover County Arboretum, located at 6206 Oleander Drive, is open every day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and you won't have to worry about paying to park or even paying to enter. Visiting this hidden gem is free and includes seven acres of gardens and plantings. It also serves as a "horticultural laboratory" for on-site Cooperative Extension staff.

Find more local hidden gems: A spotlight on the American treasures in our backyards

The Arboretum's history

In the late 1970s, New Hanover County began to shift from a rural farming county to the rapidly developing urban county that it is today. The county's Cooperative Extension saw a need to expand its programming to meet the needs of both consumer and commercial horticulture. According to the Arboretum's website, the Arboretum grew out of the vision of Charles E. "Pete" Lewis, who was the county's extension director from 1979 to 1989, and a group of dedicated people who shared his dream.

What was once the site of the Bradley Creek School opened as the Arboretum on Oct. 5, 1989, after four years of hard work from volunteers. The Bradley Creek School was destroyed in a fire in 1982, and in 1984, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners appropriated $200,000 to turn the school's site into a home for the Arboretum and the county's Extension Service.

About the gardens

The Arboretum has many different gardens with labeled plants as well as educational displays to learn more about plants and wildlife throughout the gardens and throughout the Cape Fear region. New Hanover County Cooperative Extension and Arboretum Director Lloyd Singleton said the arboretum's gardens are a great public demonstration as visitors can get an idea of what grows well.

Here's a look at some of the different gardens:

  • Rose Garden: In this garden, you can find a circular path with many different kinds of roses in varying colors and sizes. Each type of rose has a unique name, and there are many hybrid tea roses.
  • Native Plant Garden: This garden features many different plants native to the region, including hydrangeas, irises, butterfly weed, and St. John's Wort, just to name a few. The garden also has different educational signs for visitors to learn about topics like bee pollination and the benefits of native plants.
  • Japanese Garden: If you see photos of the Arboretum on social media, chances are they were probably taken in this garden. Tall red torii mark the entrance to the Japanese Garden. A rock path and a small bridge over a winding stream bring you to the tea house, where visitors can get some shade and listen to the water running through the stream.
  • Herb Garden: This garden contains many different herbs, including oregano, lavender, and sage. Although it is smaller, it allows visitors to see what kinds of herbs they could grow on their own.

The Arboretum also has a large Koi pond that has a few turtles. Singleton said that when it's open, visitors can get food for 25 cents from the feeder, but currently the feeder is closed due to an algal bloom in the pond.

Other gardens include the Butterfly Garden, the Camellia Walk, the Memorial Contemplation Garden, the Tribute Garden to the military, the Vegetable Garden, the Shade Garden, the Welcome Garden, the Children's Garden and the Woodland Garden.

What keeps the garden flourishing?

According to its website, the Arboretum is supported by public and private grants, major fundraisers by the Friends of the Arboretum and Master Gardeners, the state and county governments, local garden clubs, and dedicated volunteers.

Beasley attributed the maintenance of the grounds to the grounds crew and dedicated volunteers, but "do not be fooled, we are not just a pretty face!"

The Plant Clinic, which is open weekdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., is staffed with volunteer Master Gardeners who guide local gardeners with their own plantings. Beasley said the Master Gardeners take pride in teaching the history and horticulture of the gardens and also give guided tours to small groups.

Events and programs

Roben Jarrett, administrative assistant for the county Cooperative Extension, pointed to the Ability Garden that provides therapeutic horticulture to those who are older in age, have physical or mental challenges, as well as youth in underserved communities.

Jarrett said the Ability Garden has been operating for 25 years and it shows at-risk youth what they are able to achieve through gardening.

Meanwhile, Singleton said the Master Gardener Plant Sale every spring brings in over 4,000 people over five days.
